Stickpin fire over 19,000 hectares CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

Despite the public meetings held in Grand Forks and Christina Lake regarding the wildfires and the protocol regarding evacuations if it arises, the fires around the area have not grown significantly in the last few days. Currently, there have been no evacuation alerts or orders as of yet for Grand Forks and area. There is a second public meeting regarding the Stickpin fire on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at Grand Forks at 6 p.m. at the high school and at Christina Lake at 8 p.m. at the community hall. The Stickpin fire is now at 19,244 hectares (ha) and is 15 per cent contained. Firelines on the western edge are holding. Crews continue to strengthen the lines. On the southern perimeter, dozer lines are being constructed Smoke persists but are indirect. On Monday, crews continued to create guard lines and fuel free areas on the northeast side of the fire, and began preparing for burn off operations along these lines. There was some minimal growth on the northwest side of the fire • See WILDFIRES page A14

John MacLean, Emergency Operations Centre director and RDKB CAO, led a public meeting at Grand Forks Secondary School on Thursday regarding the wildfire situation in and around Grand Forks. Speaking to the crowd were Frank Konrad, Grand Forks mayor; Grace McGregor, RDKB board chair/Area C Christina Lake director; Roly Russell, RDKB Area D/Rural Grand Forks director; Alvin Boyer, BC Wildfire Services; Tony Falco, BC Wildfire Services incident commander; Gord Parker, Office of the Fire Commissioner; and MacLean. The same group spoke at Christina Lake that same evening except without Konrad and Russell, and Pat McPhillips filling in for Parker representing the office of the fire commissioner. Approximately 500 people showed up at the meeting in Grand Forks, while 300 were at Christina Lake. The speakers urged people to be calm but ready as they provided updates on the wildfires that could have an impact on both communities. Updates were provided on

the Rock Creek fire and the more worrisome fire in the U.S. known as the Kettle Complex (Stickpin), located just south of Grand Forks. “We’re here to give you as much information as we can about the fire situation in the basin for the summer,” said MacLean, in his opening remarks to the crowd. “We have our partners from the BC Wildfire management branch, Office of the Fire Commissioner and the Ministry of Transportation. We’re all working together to ensure we can get through this as safe as we can.” MacLean told residents that preparations for evacuation plans have been put in place for both areas, although at this time Grand Forks is of less concern than the Cascade Ponderosa and Santa Rosa areas of Christina Lake. MacLean noted that there are two levels of evacuation: alert and order. An evacuation alert means residents should be ready to evacuate. An evacuation order means residents must leave their homes immediately and vacate the area using local roads and Highway 3. Evacuees are required to report to the Trail Memorial Arena (1051 Victoria St.).

He stressed that at this time neither area is under any evacuation alerts. If it happens, the evacuation alert would be posted on the RDKB website (RDKB.com), Twitter and through the radio. For both evacuation levels, RCMP officers will go door to door to alert each resident. Boyer from BC Wildfire Service said that the region has 135 wildfires to date, well above the average of 35. He said that all the fires have really pushed firefighting resources to their limit. “We’ve had to prioritize the fires so we can get to the fires that are affecting people and properties firstly,” he said. “Right now we have 18 fires burning within the zones.” Tony Falco, incident commander, told the crowd the Stickpin fire is about four kilometres from the Canadian border near Grand Forks. “It hasn’t moved very much in the last few days,” he said. “One large reason is the old fire site it’s run into just south of town. That’s really good for us. That’s really slowed it down.” He said the fire is more active on the other side (east) and that they expect the fire to grow. • See PUBLIC MEETING page A14

1910 Wednesday morning about 10 o’clock, fire was discovered at the English Cove Resort at Christina Lake, and inside of half an hour the whole building was a mass of smoldering ruins. The fire was supposed to have originated from the defective chimney. 1915 A Billings man, accused of threatening an acquaintance while under the influence of liquor, was taken into custody by Cst. Stenciled. He was given a choice of either paying a $50 fine and costs, or three months hard labour. He paid the fine. 1920 By decision handed down by the Workmen’s Compensation Board, Mrs. Stanfield, widow of George Stanfield, provincial chief of police at Grand Forks, will receive compensation under the provisions of the board. Chief Stanfield was shot by some unknown person or persons on June 10, presumably bootleggers against whom he had been particularly active. 1925 Still another important mining deal is to be recorded in Boundary mining. This week a bond for $50,000 was taken on the Grand Forks Syndicate property on the North Fork by N.C. Sheridan and R.L. Roundly, two mining men from Wallace, Idaho, who made an examination of the property. 1930 The telegraph mechanics have been busy stringing the telegraph wires on the B.C. Telephone Company’s poles; this is expected to be completed and facilities opened at the new downtown office Saturday. 1935 The stampede at Christina Lake last Friday and Saturday did not bring the crowds that had been expected, prob-

ably due to conflicting attractions. Hans Richter has put on many stampedes and his bucking horses know the art of perfection. 1940 Junior Chamber of Commerce is the name of the new junior club which was formed at George’s Barber Shop last Friday evening; there was a fair attendance at the meeting and those present elected Walter Manson as president. 1945 It has been officially announced that Hugh Sutherland, manager of the local branch of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce here for the last 14 years, will retire from active service with that institution Sept. 18. 1950 Greenwood Elementary School students have returned to school after a strike in which they refused to enter the school until promised better accommodation. The strike was called off when the school board promised to introduce another bylaw for the erection of new school accommodation. 1960 Mrs. Lois Haggen, who for four years served as Grand Forks-Greenwood member of the provincial legislature, was returned with a greatly increased plurality in the provincial election. 1970 It was appropriate that local pilot Wes Docksteader should have been at the controls of the first plane to land on the new Grand Forks airport. 1975 The senior reserve champion bull in the Shorthorn Show at the PNE went to Thomas Bishop of Rock Creek. 1980 Ottawa metricators are all smiles these days, even as they watch bewil-

dered shoppers scratching their heads, trying to figure out the real cost of various products. The metricators, of course, are the government people who continually reassure Canadians that they will learn to love metric. 1985 Success has come quickly to the new Grand Forks-based rock group Set 16. Mitchel Higashi, Mandy Morrison and Jeff Koftinoff won the $1,000 cash prize in Castlegar’s Rock Wars contest. 1990 Ten-year-old Jason Bedard, Grand Forks area resident, was chosen the Canadian Junior Elk Bugling Champion, held in Kimberley recently. 1995 Tina Jmaeff, 70, is charged with two counts of arson after a fire was set on the sundeck of a Highway 3 residence. Minimal damage was sustained as the owner of the residence was home at the time and able to extinguish the blaze. 2000 Christina Lake’s Dustin Lang has been blessed with some financial assistance from a White Rock doctor to the tune of $20,000. The scholarship, established by Dr. Paul Trussell, will go a long way for the GFSS graduate. 2010 There have been two incidents of explosives found in the Boundary in the past week and police say they are worried. On Aug. 19, at a location in Greenwood, stolen property was recovered from a Aug. 12 break in at the Grand Forks RCMP detachment. Police would not say what items specifically were stolen from the station. that incident required the detonation of explosives found on the scene. Police again found dangerous weapons during a raid on a Christina Lake grow-op on Sunday, Aug. 22. Cpl. Richard Lanz of the Grand Forks RCMP says that four firearms, two of which were loaded, and dynamite were found

Grand Forks City Park Tot Lot recently received a windfall of $22,500 for upgrades thanks to a federal government and Western Economic Diversification Canada grant. Dan Albas, Member of Parliament for Okanagan-Coquilla, was in Grand Forks July 30 to present the cheque to Mayor Frank Konrad with MP Linda Larson and city councillors Julia Butler and Christine Thompson joining in the announcement. ““The City of Grand Forks is pleased to be selected as a recipient of $22,500 through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program grant, and would like to thank the Federal Government and Western Economic Diversification Canada for this funding,” Konrad said. The city will use the funding to upgrade the Tot Lot playground equipment in City Park,

he explained. “The Tot Lot is highly used and well-loved in our community and the upgrades will be welcomed by the children, parents and visitors to the community who use this equipment every day.” The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program is part of Canada 150 Celebrates, the Government of Canada’s celebration of our country’s 150th anniversary. Under the theme “Giving back to Canada: shaping the future, leaving a lasting legacy and giving a gift to Canada,” the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program will invest $150 million over two years to support projects that rehabilitate existing community facilities across Canada.

It is always a cause for a celebration when homeowners pay off their mortgage. Linda and Andy McLeod, of Grand Forks, have become the first partner family of Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC (HFHSEBC) to pay off their mortgage. The McLeods bought their Habitat for Humanity (HFH) home in 1999 and now 16 years later are mortgage free. At a ceremony held at their home on Aug. 1, the McLeods hosted current Habitat board members to celebrate this achievement. Habitat’s mission is to build decent, affordable housing and promote home ownership for low income families that may not qualify for traditional mortgages. HFH is a leader in creating transformational change for families where the philosophy is: affordable housing should be a basic human right available to all. The two largest barriers for most families to become homeowners are the ability to save for a down payment and having affordable monthly mortgage payments. The down payment requirement is resolved by families contributing 500 “sweat equity” hours into the building of their home. Partner families purchase the home with a no interest mortgage where HFH caps the mortgage payments at 25 per cent of the family income. Eleanor Martens, the chair for HFHSEBC, “What makes our approach unique is that (From left) Linda and Andy McLeod are we remove the barriers congratulated by Eleanor Martens, chair for Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC. to owning a home.” Submitted photo At the ceremony at their home, Linda and Andy McLeod commented on the many people who had a hand in building their home. “We want to thank everyone who helped build our home and make the dream of having a new home a reality.” For information on Habitat for Humanity, contact Executive Director Bob Huff at 250-442-2722 or by email at bob.huff@hfhsebc.org.

Fairs will bring people together

The smoke and the nearby wildfires have sown fear into most residents, to differing degrees. We’re used to our perfect world with beautiful mountains, lakes and clear, sunny skies and our nice houses and green lawns. Now these nearby fires and the smoke they create threaten it. Despite that, people have come together to help out their neighbours by donating all kinds of supplies, food, water and other items. It’s important to remain calm but prepared, that is the mantra. Although it may be a while before life in the Boundary gets back to some form of “normal,” life goes on. Businesses remain open, people are working and everyone is trying to retain some sense of normalcy as much as possible, although that can be a challenge when going outside for any period of time is difficult. Thankfully the smoke is expected to dissipate today (Wednesday) or Thursday. When it eventually happens I think you’ll see a lot of people very thankful for simple pleasures like being able to see the mountains and the blue sky. Although, sadly the airport appreciation and fly-in day at the Grand Forks Airport and the Firebells and Fanfare antique fire apparatus show were cancelled due to the fires, a couple of local fairs are going ahead. The Grand Forks Fall Fair is set for this weekend at Dick Bartlett Park behind the aquatic centre. Rock Creek Fall Fair is also forging ahead and will run Sept. 19 and 20. The GF fair offers plenty of events and things to do for young and old from dog shows to musical acts to bouncy castles for the kids. The Rock Creek Fall Fair will offer a chance for that community to show their resiliency and put on a great show a month after most of the town was evacuated due to the wildfire. Fall fairs and festivals are a staple of small towns and are a great way to bring people together. It’s a way to continue the healing process for Rock Creek and the sense of community in both places.

On The Ball CRAIG LINDSAY The sky is falling, the sky is falling. It’s been an interesting and hectic last few days around the Boundary. Us in Grand Forks have thus far been spared from the wildfires that are surrounding us. That hasn’t stopped people from posting about how the fires are going to consume us and we need to run to the hills. Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and the like can be a great resource. Jenna Edwards set up the Rock Creek wildfire evacuation information page and it grew to 2,500

members who share information. What’s up Grand Forks? has also been very helpful as have other sites. The RDKB has tweeted up-to-date information on their Twitter feed, which has really been a great help. Unfortunately, social media is also a haven for rumours and gossip, which can spread like, well, wildfire. There’s no doubt people need to be aware that there is danger and it can be scary particularly when the town is blanketed by thick smoke. But that doesn’t mean the fire is getting worse or getting closer. In fact, the lack of wind keeps the fire from spreading. The Stickpin wildfire in Washington State is a large one and has grown over the last few days. The fact that it

(while, the smoke) can be visible on clear days from Grand Forks doesn’t help. But American (and now B.C.) firefighting crews are battling it hard. It does not appear to be growing significantly and it remains about five kilometres from the border. The RDKB’s public meeting on Thursday was interesting and informative as John MacLean, RDKB CAO, and a few other important officials spoke clearly to the residents of Grand Forks (and later that evening at Christina Lake) about what is happening and what people can expect IF an evacuation alert or order is to take place. MacLean assured people that there has been NO evacuation alert or order at this point. That hasn’t stopped people

from going on Facebook and saying they heard from someone who heard that we were being evacuated; or that they saw the army moving through; or other such gossip. Look these last two weeks have been tough, there’s no doubt. This smoke isn’t helping but neither is unsubstantiated rumours. As RDKB chair Grace McGregor said Thursday, people need to remain calm but vigilant. Don’t panic. Yes, you should have a bag packed with important items such as medications, papers, water and such. But that is just precautionary at this point. Spreading rumours just makes people more panicky and scared. All fear does is increase stress, which is definitely one thing we don’t need any more of.

Council discusses amending the municipal ticketing bylaw during the regular council meeting on Aug. 17 at City Hall.

City getting EV charging station COUNCIL BRIEFS By Craig Lindsay

EV Charging Station Green-minded residents and visitors alike will soon be able to charge their electric vehicles (EV) in downtown Grand Forks at no charge. At its regular council meeting on Aug. 17, council approved a motion to proceed with the EV charging station project. To make it possible, council approved amending the 2015 financial plan from surplus to include the installation costs of $5,000. The project (online at plugshare.com), which is run in conjunction with Thompson Okanagan Tourist Association and Destination Osoyoos, is designed to improve the Highway 3 and 97 routes for EV traffic. Municipal ticketing Council approved final reading of a motion to amend the municipal ticketing and information bylaw. The amendment will direct staff to start imposing fines for violations of the sprinkling regulations. The amendment was made after it was discovered that there were no provisions in the municipal ticketing and information bylaw to apply fines for sprinkling violations. Fine list: for stage 1 (alternate days watering) is $50 for the first offence, $100 for the second offence and $150 for the third offence; stage 2 (CURRENT – twice per week) is $100 for the first, $200 for the second and $300 for the third. Stage 3 (once a week) is $150 for first; $300 for second; and $450 for third. Stage 4 (no

watering) is $600 for all offences. Please visit online at grandforks. ca for full watering regulations including times. Noise control bylaw Council carried an amendment to the noise control bylaw. The amendment will address business and industrial operations. The clause will allow for better control and enforcement of the bylaw in regard to the hours of work and noise produced by the industrial operations in the industrial park. The vote was 5-1 with Councillor Neil Krog voting against. Council reports

Councillor Thompson

Councillor Thompson attended a meeting of the Phoenix Foundation on July 22. She announced that the board has contracted for the position of youth coordinator after the resignation of Roland Kruger. Thompson attended a special meeting of council that approved the application of a development variance permit for a property on 18th Street. On Aug. 5, she attended a meeting of the transition housing project steering committee. A review of the draft preliminary needs assessment for housing needs for the homeless was done, with some recommendations for change to the document prior to presenting to council.

In his written report to council on Aug. 17, Mayor Frank Konrad stated that he attended a cheque presentation with MLA Linda Larson July 30 at the Grand Forks Airport. He stated that the cheque was for a grant for the upgrade of the beacon lighting. The Dog Park Association is asking to split the large dog play area into two smaller ones and install a separate entrance. That would allow for additional usage of the park as the separate area would be used for dogs that need to adjust to others as well allowing smaller dogs an area away from bigger ones. They would also like to extend one of the play areas by 3-6 kilometres to the north toward the cemetery. “They’re asking for an extension to the size of the park and to put a fence between to split it and keep separate area for big dogs and little dogs,” said Councillor Neil Krog. “It would just function better. They would also like to see a shelter built and a restroom facility of some kind.” The cost would be approximately $2,000 for fencing and other materials, and 32 hours of labour and other expenses which would total an estimated $3,700. “They’ve been fundraising and they want us to help fund the expansion because it is beneficial to the city,” said Krog. Council voted that they not consider any options until staff could evaluate the potential expansion area to determine if there are human remains. “That’s the first step,” he said. “Because records are not exact, we want to make sure the property we’re talking about doesn’t contain any gravesites. We’re not going to build on it if it’s not clear. If it is, then we’ll be talking to the group about how best to meet everyone’s objectives.”

Marijuana plants seized POLICE BRIEFS By Craig Lindsay

Marijuana found

On Aug. 11 at around 8:30 p.m. police were on patrol at Christina Lake regarding a property file. “While they were at the property dealing with the initial complaint they observed some marijuana plants growing in the garden,” said Cpl. Richard Lanz. “The plants were seized as the owner had no medical marijuana licence to grow.” No charges were forwarded. Windows broken

On Aug. 13 at 12:47 p.m. a report was received regarding vandalism to a car parked on Riverside Drive. The car had both its driver’s side and passenger’s side windows broken. “It appears the damage was done by a highvelocity projectile such as a BB gun or slingshot,” said Lanz. At this time there are no suspects. Cocaine found

On Aug. 14 at 2:15 a.m. police were conducting a patrol on Morrissey Creek Road when a vehicle approached the check stop. “After a conversation with the driver, a search of the vehicle was conducted,” said Lanz. “Cocaine and magic mushrooms were found in the vehicle. The matter is still being investigated.” Skateboarder busted

On Aug. 16 at 12:05 a.m. police were on patrol on Central Avenue when they observed a person on a skateboard riding in the middle of the road. “The person also appeared to be concealing beer as he rode his skateboard down the highway,” said Lanz. The skateboarder, a 19-year-old male from Grand Forks, was issued a violation ticket for consuming liquor in a public place. Window punched out

On Aug. 17 at 11:20 p.m. RCMP received a report about a window being broken at a residence. “Through the investigation it turned out that boyfriend/girlfriend were having an

argument and the window was punched,” said Lanz. No charges are being forwarded. Traffic stop yields glass bong

On Aug. 20 at 10:30 p.m., police were conducting a traffic stop on Morrissey Creek Road when they noticed beer on the floor of a vehicle. “As a result the vehicle was searched and along with liquor, a glass bong used for smoking other substances was located,” said Lanz. No violation ticket was issued. The liquor and bong were seized for destruction. Driver received roadside prohibition

On Aug. 21 at 1:03 a.m. police checked a vehicle on Riverside Drive. “The driver of the vehicle had an odour of liquor coming from his breath,” said Lanz. “An approved screening device demand was read and two samples were obtained.” Both readings resulted in fails and the driver, a 28-year-old male, was served with a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impoundment.

Rotary Club donates to DARE program SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

The Rotary Club of Grand Forks donated $250 to support the RCMP to teach the new DARE keepin’ it REAL (KiR) Program to 45 local Grade 5 students. Staff Sergeant Anthony Choy, the RCMP provincial coordinator of the Drug and Organized Crime Awareness Service (DOCAS), which oversees the Grand Forks DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program, said that over 100 police officers teach .ARE to thousands of school children throughout British Columbia. “The new DARE KiR Program encourages youth to be exemplary citizens

and to help others in need. The program also covers topics such as peer pressure, stress, communications, bullying, and the decision-making model.” Choy said DOCAS work closely with DARE B.C. Society, a registered charitable organization which raises funds within each community to cover the cost of the student learning materials. DARE B.C. Society President Colin Grant emphasized, “Community donations ensure our children will be equipped with the critical thinking and life skills necessary to choose a drugfree life and fund the $12 cost of learning materials per student.” Grant thanked the Rotary Club of Grand Forks for their support. “We are very grateful for their generous dona-

tion which covers the cost of learning materials for 20 who took the program during the 2014-2015 school year”. DARE B.C. Society partner relations manager Chantal Broughton said next year’s DARE program starts this September and over $600 will need to be raised in Grand Forks to cover the cost of learning materials for over 50 students who are expected to take the DARE KiR program. “We are appealing to the citizens of Grand Forks to make a donation to help the Grand Forks RCMP empower our school children to choose a drug-free life,” Broughton added. To make a donation contact Broughton by phone 778-290-2029 or email at dare@darebc.com.

Even if it isn’t sunny, your baby’s delicate skin can still burn, so it’s vital to protect her. If your baby is younger than six months, keep her out of the sun altogether and stay in the shade. If you have an older baby or toddler, keep her out of the sun between 11 am and 3 pm, which is the hottest part of the day. When your baby is in the sun, dress her in cool cotton clothes that cover her legs and arms. A UV sunsuit is also a good option. Put her in a wide-brimmed hat that shades her face and neck, and sunglasses to protect her eyes from the sun and sand. Before you go in the sun, apply sunscreen thickly to every area of your baby’s skin not covered by clothes or a hat, including her hands and feet. You may find it easier to apply the cream before you get your toddler dressed in the morning. That way, you can be sure you haven’t missed any patches. Use a sunscreen specially formulated for babies and children, with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Make sure the sunscreen is a broad-spectrum brand with a four-star or five-star rating. This means it offers UVA and UVB protection, which will be stated on the packaging. Reapply at least every couple of hours and after your baby has played in water, even if the sunscreen is waterproof. www.babycentre.com Success By 6 supports parents and communities in creating healthy, nurturing environments for our youngest children, so that by age 6, they are physically, socially, and emotionally ready to succeed in school. The goal of Success By 6 is to better the lives of our Boundary area children in our families and enhancing our communities.

Success by 6® is a locally based initiative in partnership with:

Phoenix Foundation of the Boundary Communities • Ministry of Children & Family Development • Grand Forks Credit Union

is a proud supporter of this community initaitive

For Grand Forks’ newest restaurant, the key is freshness. The owner and manager are also counting on another ‘F’, that of the importance of family to make the Granby River Roadhouse standout. The Roadhouse is attached to the Ramada Inn across from Extra Foods. Owner/investor Daniel Brown-Levesque took the building over from the previous tenants (Stoys’) in April. After extensive renovations, the Granby River Roadhouse officially opened on May 28. “We put in about $5,000,” said BrownLevesque. “We cleaned the carpets, remodeled it, made it brighter. Took out the Plexiglas. We’re not finished.” Manager of the Roadhouse is Dave Leitner, who also works full-time at Roxul. Besides being manager, Leitner also helps in the kitchen as needed. “We’re a family-operated restaurant,” he said. “Daniel’s my stepdad. My mom works in the back.” Brown-Levesque said he bought and renovated the restaurant because there were no really good jobs in Grand Forks. “I had an epiphany,”

he said. “I used to own the campground in Rock Creek. I liked working for myself. I wanted to employe people in Grand Forks.” A major part of the appeal of the roadhouse is the fresh cooked food. “There’s not many places here that have homestyle, cook-to-order food,” said Leitner. “We make everything about 90 per cent from scratch,” said Brown-Levesque. Leitner said the restaurant uses locally grown produce as much as possible. “We have the benefit of living in this beautiful area,” he said. “We have these great resources. We feel it’s important and beneficial to support the local growers. This restaurant is based on supporting the community.” Leitner said business has been getting better and better as more people find out about the restaurant. “The main thing is serving good food,” he said. “We’ve had great feedback so far.” Leitner said the restaurant specializes in homestyle comfort food such as pastas, burgers, soups including the Russian staple Borscht, steaks and more. “Freshness is the key for our us,” he said. Currently, the restaurant is not licensed but the pair say that it will happen in the future. Leitner said the place is busy for weekend breakfasts as well as Fridays and Saturdays for the dinner rush. He said they get a lot of reservations from groups. They are also popular for motel guests. Coming up with the restaurant name was easy for Brown-Levesque, who has a house on the Granby. “I live right on the river,” he said. “It’s quite secluded and very private. I love it there.” Another interesting fact about BrownLevesque is that he speaks three languages, which comes in handy from time to time at the restaurant. Leitner grew up in Christian Valley before heading out to Saskatchewan to work on the oil rigs as a driller. After the company went backrupt, he came back to the Boundary and went to work at Roxul. “I know this area,” he said. “I could live anywhere but chose Grand Forks. I love it here.” The Granby River Roadhouse is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday to Wednesday and from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays. On weekends they open at 7 a.m. and close at 9 p.m.

on Sunday. Crews made good progress towards containing this growth. Smokey conditions in the area are limiting aircraft and ground crew operations. The Stickpin fire is five kilometres from the Canadian border at its northern most point. Significant resources are being mobilized to Christina Lake in preparation should the winds push the fire to the northeast. If required, BC Wildfire Service airtankers may use Christina Lake for air operations. An air attack officer flying in a smaller “bird-dog” or lead aircraft will sound an alarm over the area prior to the airtankers landing in the lake. For the safety of firefighting personnel and the public, recreational boaters are asked to avoid using the lake during these operations. Safe fire suppression efforts depend on the support and understanding of the public. The BC Wildfire Service is working with structural protection firefighters from the Boundary region to assess properties which could potentially become threatened by this wildfire. Residents will be notified if an evacuation alert or order is put in effect. The fire at Paulson Pass, approximately 15 kilometres northeast of Christina Lake, is at 300 Ha and is 80 per

cent contained and crews continue to mop up on the western and north flanks. The fire remains highly visible from Highway 3. The fire at Lynch Creek, 25 km north of Grand Forks, is at 250 ha and is 10 per cent contained. Crews have been working on containment of the east flank. The fire is not threatening any structures or communities; however, smoke from the fire is visible to the residents in the North Fork area. The Rock Creek wildfire is 75 per cent contained and is 4,534 ha. The RDKB has completed an assessment of damage in the area and has confirmed that 30 homes and an additional 15 structures have been damaged or destroyed. There is an evacuation alert in effect. It has been downgraded from an evacuation order. The Ministry of Agriculture is working with farmers to restore internet services so supplies can be ordered for livestock. This area contains multiple potential hazards including active wildfires, “danger trees” (trees whose root systems have been weakened by fire activity), heavy equipment use and downed power lines. The resiliency (Rock Creek evacuation) centre remains open in Midway at 692 7th Ave. Stickpin, Paulson and Lynch Creek are lightning-caused, while the Rock Creek fire is still under investigation but thought to be humancaused. Smokey conditions are heavy throughout the Boundary, originating from fires in Washington State. Check DriveBC.ca for road conditions.

“You’ll see more smoke in town and a lot of ash,” said Falco. Falco said he has met with U.S. personnel and they are also experiencing a big fire year and their resources are also stretched thin. He informed the crowd that they have worked out a concept with the Americans to put Canadian firefighters on the fire. “What it means is putting Canadian boots on the ground on the other side of the border to protect our valu-

UNIVERSAL WATER METER INSTALLATION PROGRAM The City of Grand Forks is excited to announce that the Universal Water Meter installations are in its final stages. The City is currently contacting home owners who are on the waiting list for water meter installations to arrange for appointments throughout the next several months. Please contact the City at 250-442-4148 if you did not receive a call by September 4th, 2015 to verify that you are on the list or if you wish to be added to the list. At the same time, City employees will be inspecting the recommended outdoor pit meter installation sites to verify connection points and any installation concerns or challenges. Ultimately, the City wants this process to go as smoothly as possible with the least amount of disturbance to our residents and home owners. The City expects that the universal meter installations for inside and pit meters will commence Mid-September 2015.

The City would like thank everyone for their ongoing cooperation throughout the program.

After 30 years of selfless work at the Boundary Family and Individual Services Society (BFISS), executive director Leda Leander has decided to retire. In her time with the agency, Leander fulfilled numerous roles. “In the very beginning I was on the board of directors—that’s how I started, as a board member,” she shared. “For awhile I was the secretary of the infant development program and as the organization started to grow, there was a need for an administrator and an executive director. After that I decided to move quickly: we applied for more grants and I moved into the executive director position.” Leander originally grew up in Grand Forks and was drawn back to the community after finishing her schooling. “Once I started having children, I wanted to give back to the community that I grew up in and I knew I wanted to live in a rural community. It was natural for me to come back to this area that I loved so much. When I left school I moved around, I went to university and college, and then I decided at one point to move back and I’ve never looked back on that. I love the Boundary area.” She also discussed her future after retirement. “I’m going to volunteer in the community, spend more time as a grandma, and garden. I love books so I’m going to read more. For the longest time I’ve mainly read to grow in terms of my job and I’m looking forward to reading more fiction. I’ve read a lot of non-fiction in the last 20 years. “I’m also going to take a little break from FISS, but I’m looking forward to volunteering in some of our programs, not in an administrative way, but as someone from the community. I’d like to volunteer in cooking programs, childcare, and just take a different avenue in terms of my volunteering. I’d also like to volunteer for some other organizations that make a huge contribution to community life and other organizations across the Boundary.” Leander spoke at length about FISS and some of its many programs it has to serve the community. “FISS is an organization that provides children, youth and families with an opportunity to get involved with their own well-being and also get involved in terms of community well-being. We do provide family support and counselling programs, but as equally important is to give families and kids and youth the opportunity to get involved in community life. “For instance, we run after-school art programs and sports programs. These programs are not counselling and sup-

port programs, they’re programs that let kids become involved in their interests, like art or sports. I think that’s really important that we’re working with the people we serve to develop themselves and develop the community.” BFISS has a website (boundaryfamily.org) which is a good source of information regarding the agency. “We also have group of young women who are called peer mentors, and they reach out into the community and do things like taking food to someone who has young children and could use some support from the community, or they’ve done the window at the women’s centre to talk about resources that are available to families. We also have family-friendly barbecues that happen here with 100-130 people, children and adults, who attend. “For people who don’t know what we do, we encourage them to look at the website, come and ask questions, and be involved. We try to give many of avenues for people to be involved. The family barbecues are just one of the ways people can come, learn what we do, and be involved in the community.” BFISS serves people across the entire Boundary area, all the way from Beaverdell to Big White to Rock Creek to Christina Lake and across the whole Boundary. “Our staff are all across the Boundary helping and providing opportunities for people to find their own sense of well-being.” Leander has five kids, four of whom live in the valley, she said while discussing her family and their importance to her. “My one son is a teacher who is teaching in Brazil right now, and at some point he’ll come back to Canada. He’s been teaching abroad for quite a few years now. I have a blended family, but all of my children are my children. I have three grandchildren and one more on the way. “I love the opportunity to be close to them, and I’m looking forward to spending more time with my grandchildren in retirement.” Leander also commented on how much she has learned over her time at BFISS and the importance of learning from the community as well. “I learn something new every single day. I think the community and the people that we serve have so much to teach us, to teach our staff, and our board of directors about how we can better serve

LEDA LEANDER

the community. I’m always learning and I think all of our staff experience their involvement here that way. “We have a very fabulous board of directors, and we’ve been so lucky over all the years I’ve been here to have great board members. They provide the wisdom and insight to direct the agency, to steer the direction of the agency, and we’ve benefitted so much from that. Over the years I’ve learned so much from our staff, board members, and the people we serve.” Finally, she commented on the future of BFISS after her retirement and her hopes for it moving forward. “I feel really good about the future of FISS. I think we have a really good team, a great board, and I think FISS will continue to make important contributions to the citizens of the Boundary area. I’d like the organization just to continue to grow and prosper and to continue to put serving people of the communities first. “As you can see when you go into our building, we don’t have a fancy building, we have all second-hand and donated furniture and we’re always taking food donations, doing charity things. The most important thing about our organization is how we serve our community. It’s not about having a big, fancy building, but to serve. I hope the organization continues to have a focus on the people and the community. “The important thing to remember is about our communities as a whole. This is an organization that represents our communities and serves our communities. My role in that is just one little piece in a whole bunch of people that really really care about community wellbeing. That bunch of people includes the people we serve too, because they’re part of this, and I hope that remains part of our philosophy moving forward.” After Leander’s retirement, James Wilson will become the new executive director of BFISS after serving as the vice-chairperson on the board of directors.

Build it and they will come SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

Aug. 20 was a busy afternoon for the Grand Forks and District Public Library and the Summer Reading Club, which had their closing ceremonies party celebrating a big summer full of reading and activities. This year’s theme was “Build It!” and all of the activities were inspired by this theme. Program coordinators Ella Grenier and Janessa Fillo had their hands full with about 70 out of the 121 kids enrolled

in the Summer Reading Club (SRC) showing up to partake in the events planned for them. Face painting, cotton candy, popcorn, bean bag toss, and maybe the biggest hit, a petting zoo, provided by Kathy Novokshonoff, were all present for the kid’s big bash. Even our mayor, Frank Konrad, came to congratulate everyone on a job well done reading throughout the summer, handing out medals and City of Grand Forks pins. Community business also got involved by donating priz-

es for those enrolled. “Pharmasave donated notebooks, CIBC donated bags, key chains, stuffed animals, and packs of gum. The Dollar Store donated stickers and stuffed animals,” Fillo explained. Library director Cari Lynn Postnikoff was extremely pleased with this year’s SRC/ “I was blown away by this year’s Summer Reading Club. Ella, Janessa, and Lizanne [Eastwood] all did an incredible job. I’m not sure if anybody is ever going to be able to top having a petting zoo at

the closing ceremonies!” Grenier and Fillo’s favourite part of the summer? “Camping week was definitely a highlight, the kids loved the massive tent we had in the programming room. They also loved making smores!” Fillo said. “I’m so sad that it’s over. They just become like your little buddies and you can’t wait until you get to see them again,” Grenier added. “We are expecting more kids for SRC 2016. We are also hoping to have a four- to five-year-old group next year,” Fillo said on the status of the next year’s SRC. So make sure to mark down June 2016 for registration for the next SRC if you have children who love to read.

Grand Forks Gazette

Hoping for open-mindedness by Katelyn Derhousoff

What students want to see changed

I want the world to accept one another; I want peace and harmony. I have recently begun to travel, and have been filled with awe for Europe. I admire the history that is rooted throughout the cities and appreciated the curiosity that has awakened in me. I plan to take International Relations where I will develop a better understanding of our diverse world. I am thrilled to be able to have the opportunity to bridge the gap between cultures in my near future. Being submerged into a new culture and being surrounded by an aura of unfamiliar has given me a sense of wonder. I have been enlightened by my experiences in travel, and I want to share my perspective with others. We live in such a contrasting world through different governments, languages, and morals and my trip showed me a glimpse of this contrast. While walking the diverse city streets, I still felt an odd feeling of acceptance with a minimal cultural barrier. The minimal barrier may have been due to the European’s inviting persona, but I also give credit to my open mindedness. Through this trait I was able to adapt and learn in a calm and welcoming manner. I am excited to be continuing with travel in July, to Cuba, and I am even more excited to bring my experiences forward into International Relations. In the fall I plan to attend the University of British Columbia where I will proceed in International Relations. I will be creating a depth of understanding for a wide range of nations by indulging in the many diverse insights other cultures hold. My dream is to take each lesson and create a global perspective in hopes of uniting nations worldwide. I am aware of the extreme contrast beholden to each culture, but I want to help shine light on their similarities because they are often overlooked. I want the world to seek education through differences, and gain appreciation for the forms of beauty differences can create. I want children to form their own thoughts outside of their religion, and I want woman to feel independent and never ashamed. I want social class to be an irrelevant factor in the leading equation of success, and I want everyone to have the opportunities needed to thrive. This world needs to accept that culture does not have to limit these possibilities. Culture is more than a label that individuals hide behind, cultures have morals not guidelines. My dream is to experience a world in which everyone is openminded. I take interest in learning the history and customs of cultures, and I enjoy sharing and hearing different perspectives and experiences and I would like others to feel the same. I would be optimistic to say that the world will look past history, religion, language, and colour, but the realist in me looks for any small change that is a defining step forward. I plan to be part of the small steps that change our world.

Each year students in the GFSS graduating class are invited to send in a written submission based on the topic about the world today. This year students were asked to write on the topic, “What I want to see changed in the world, and how I am going to help to make it happen.” The Orris Award bursary is in honour of Stanley Orris, owner and publisher of the Grand Forks Gazette for four decades from 1944 into the seventies. He was a strong believer in social action in ways that improved our community, our country and the world. By publishing the top presentations the Gazette is honouring these outstanding contributions from the graduates of 2015. As we are set to herald in the class of 2016, may we present the original writing of winner Vanessa Pavan; and also featuring the submission by Katelyn Derhousoff.

Let’s be known as the ‘generation of change’ by Vanessa Pavan As a species Earth is the only home we have; it houses us and provides food, air and water. This planet is unique in this solar system yet after the industrial revolution people today view our planet as a dollar bill rather than a home. The fact is, the planet has a limited amount of expendable resources and although it may appear we have plenty, we do not. The issue does not lay in the actions of global warming, it stems from the mindset of youth today so we must change the way we view our condition today and our planet. The Amazon desert, no one has heard of that today, yet, the rate of destruction of the Amazon forest, it will be sooner than later that it will become a desert. However, as a species we ignore the multitude of destruction to the planet, and although truth cannot be defied, deforestation is a crucial problem. Trees are essential for the life of countless species and organisms; they provide a home, source of food or protection and purify water. There is a direct parallel for our species homes; if a city is struck by disaster the city is quickly rebuilt. However, it does not happen that fast in nature, trees take years to mature and as quickly as we are destroying them they cannot rejuvenate to compensate for the pace of devastation. Forty football fields are a lot of trees in one minute, yes that is one minute, but it is justified today because that is how we make money, how the economy works. Today’s mindset revolves around the economy; nevertheless it does not appear to be very “eco”

friendly. Our goal needs to be to preserve the planet and every being on it. The quality of life for people should not be determined by the geography of your country or the people dictating your resources. The planet should be for everyone to share equally and have the opportunity to breathe clean air not just because we live in a developed country. Moving forward into the future as a generation we must accept the challenge to make a change for generations after. Looking more than just to tomorrow, we have to view each action as an impact for the future, we cannot accept the way that we are headed. I cannot accept it. I will face this challenge in several ways, I want to preserve the planet and each person today can make an impact. Presently teenagers spend over five hours in front of screen; I want to spend five hours outside, connecting with nature and people alike. Something as simple as walking to work every day can save litres of gas and through installing energy efficient appliances. In the future, I plan to invest in alternative energy sources such as solar for my home. My ultimate goal would be to travel to an area affected by deforestation and contribute by planting trees. I reject the way people view climate change, we have to live up to the “generation of change” and be proactive to make changes. The impact of each person effects the world and if everyone changes the mindset on how they view climate change, we will be known as the “generation of change,” we must spend more time discussing not wars but how the ice is melting, that is when we will truly see change.

Pam Malekow photos The Horse Association of Central Kootenay hosted the Hot August Hooves Show Aug. 14 - 16 at the Trail Horseman’s Grounds. It was a wonderful weekend of riding and fun, despite setbacks. Many competitors’ homes were under the threat of fire, which made for a stressful and emotional time. The judge came from Riverside, Wash. and did a fantastic job. The weekend started Friday with dressage. Fifty-six tests were ridden, both English and Western. The associationa added something new to our program this year. TREC, which is a trail course with different kind of obstacles you would find if you were out in the mountains, was run and judged by Jocelyn Templeman, and was so much fun. Nineteen horses and riders went through the challenging course. Saturday was English Day, and Sunday was Western Day, along with some halter and in hand classes. The weather was amazing, although very smoky on Saturday, and a tad hot Sunday.

Bruins need billet homes SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

The Grand Forks Border Bruins are looking for billet homes for the 2015/2016 season. Billeting of out-of-town players will begin Sept. 1 after selection camp (Aug. 28 - 30). The club is looking for families who are willing to welcome a 16- to 20-year-old hockey player into their home and have this player join your family for the duration of their stay in Grand Forks. Billet families are given $500 a month and a billet season pass for each household family member. Billeting is a fun and exciting opportunity and helps our community to continue to operate a Junior B hockey team here. The club has a billet handbook available that will provide you with more details about this experience. Requirements for billet families are providing a safe, clean environment and bedroom for the hockey player(s) to live during the season and providing the player(s) with nutritious meals and snacks. Typically breakfast, lunch and snack food should be in the house but it is not a requirement to prepare these meals but dinner is pre-

pared daily. On home game days most players follow a routine where they may need to eat three – five hours before the game but with open communication these arrangements can easily be figured out to work for both the player and your family. Players are expected to respect the rules of your home and help out around the house with reasonable requests such as meal preparation and clean up. Importantly the Bruins are looking for families that will be a mentor, counsellor and good role model to its players. It is essential to be there as a support system for your hockey player and listen and give encouragement to them when needed; treating them as “one of the family” is the easiest way to look at this experience. Each billet home will have a player join your family for six months of the year but form friendships and bonds that will last beyond the hockey season. If you are interested or have questions about becoming a billet family, please contact our billet coordinator Amanda Vanlerberg at 250-443-9353 or secretary@borderbruins.ca.

Knights collecting for food bank SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

On Sept. 12, members of the Knights of Columbus and Sacred Heart Parish will be going door to door as part of a Thanksgiving food drive put on by food banks across B.C.

They will drop off brochures from the Boundary Community Food Bank listing the types of goods they need, attached to empty grocery bags. Those who wish to donate need simply fill the bag with whatever they can spare and leave it on their doorstep on the morning of Sept. 19.

The Knights will pick up the bags starting at 9 a.m. and take them to the food bank. The Knights will try to get to as many homes as possible, but if you want to participate and are afraid you might be missed, please call Andy Stefanelli at 250584-4030 to make sure you are included.

Stay hydrated the natural way It has been very hot in Grand Forks this summer and unseasonally warm temperatures are predicted into October. However (smoky days aside), in spite of the heat, we all have been spending a great deal of time outdoors swimming, hiking, biking and gardening. While enjoying a variety of summer activities, it is important to remember to stay hydrated. The heat along with exercise will increase your body’s needs for water. Even mild dehydration can lead to headaches, mental confusion and fatigue. It goes without saying the best source of hydration is pure, filtered water. However, most of us do not like plain water, thus giving in to temptation reaching out for various sugary and caffeinated drinks, including fruit juices, iced tea, sodas, sport drinks, etc. While all those drinks initially will satisfy your thirst, their high sugar content will make you want to drink more as the body will want to dilute excessive glucose in your blood. And then the more sugary drinks you consume the more your sugar balance will be disrupted. Additionally, caffeine from caffeinated drinks may affect the absorption of many essential nutrients and in some people even contribute to a small loss of water. I would like to share with you some tips for staying hydrated in hot weather. My favourite summer drink is coconut water, which is quickly becoming a new health craze. Refreshing coconut water is super hydrating due to the high content of electrolytes and minerals,
