NIC Announces Metal Jewellery Contest Winner Back to school just got a little easier for one Comox Valley student. Megan Balding won NIC’s contest Aug. 17, receiving a $250 tuition credit for the Metal Jewellery Design certificate program this September. “I never win anything,” said a surprised Balding, who previously worked as an early childhood educator. She has been creating jewellery for friends and family for years, but decided to switch careers after discovering a program brochure in Nanaimo this summer. She began researching NIC’s Metal Jewellery Design program instructors, visiting their studios, and getting excited about the year ahead. “I really want to take my skills to the next level,” she said. Balding is eager to learn new techniques from passionate artists and instructors and get professional advice on how to price and market her work. NIC’s Metal Jewellery Design program starts in Campbell River on September 9, with studio workshops available year round. Students explore professional metal techniques, gemology and more as they prepare to work in the jewellery industry, run their own business or studio workshop. “Students in this program are amazing,” said instructor Kurt Tunkl. “They did as much work in eight months last year as students in a similar program that takes two years to complete at another institution. Many of these students created enough items to open their own shop.
