Creston is one of only two towns in the B.C. Interior selected to be a prototype community for the province’s first Community Paramedicine Initiative (CPI). Community paramedicine, according to an announcement by BC Emergency Health Services and the Interior Health Authority (IHA), “is a new addition to the primary care team that will, in rural communities, strengthen the primary care system.” A key objective of the program is to ensure a competent, sustainable paramedic presence to respond to medical emergencies. By providing new or full- or part-time careers in rural and remote stations, communities will receive better paramedic coverage.

Do you love to sing? The Blossom Valley Singers is planning to build on its “best ever season”, according to president Dave Handy, and new members are welcome. “Blossom Valley Singers is looking forward to an even bigger and better season for Creston’s community choir,” Handy said last week. “Last season was easily the most successful concert series for the choir and great things are expected again this year.” Rehearsals for the new season and Christmas concert begin at Prince Charles Theatre at 7 p.m. on Sept. 15 and new

The CPI is designed to work with local health care providers to bridge identified gaps and to build on the existing skill sets of primary and advanced care paramedics. As the program eventually spreads throughout the province in the next four years, at least 80 new full-time equivalents will be hired to bolster services in rural and remote communities. During the initial phase, paramedic unit chiefs will work directly with the IHA and local health care providers to define the scope of services required and participate in the development of a local service plan. The experience gained from the first phase will help the ini-

singers are welcome to join past and present choir members. No auditions are held, but members are expected to be able to sing on pitch and in the correct rhythm. While public performances are the most obvious contribution by the organization, Handy said members are proud to give back to the community in other ways. “Each year Blossom Valley Singers awards a bursary and music camp scholarship to deserving students who have shown musical aptitude, artistic abilities and demonstrated community service,” he said. Jayden Gigliotti was this year’s recipient of the BVS Lillian Griffith Memorial

Bursary. The $500 award will help Gigliotti as he pursues a degree in theatre studies at Dalhousie University. A music camp scholarship of $300 helped Emma Penner, an accomplished young pianist, attend a two-week piano experience at the University of Victoria. “Both of these students have great stories to tell,” Handy said. “They are great talents with high aspirations in the arts and Blossom Valley Singers is proud to have been a small part in helping them follow their dreams.” For more information about Blossom Valley Singers, visit the group’s website, www. blossomvalleysingers.org.

New Creston RCMP commanding officer Darryl Hammond hasn’t run a detachment before but his 35 years of policing experience should make the transition easy enough. Hammond, who succeeds Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan, has arrived from the Langley RCMP detachment, which has 182 members. “I was watch commander, supervising more officers than we have in the entire Creston operation,” the staff sergeant said on Monday. Hammond’s first 16 years as a Mountie were served in four Alberta detachments. He then moved to the Lower Mainland, where he remained for the last 18 years. “I wanted to come back to a small town for my final posting,” he said. “I want to be a part of the community.” His wife, Heather, is a nurse. She will finish up her last few months on the job in Langley before officially moving to Creston. The couple has two adult sons, one a member of the RCMP who is stationed in the Northwest Territories. The younger son is pursuing studies at the University of British Columbia. Police Beat Creston RCMP responded to 97 calls for service from Aug. 17-23, Hammond said. August 17 •Police are recommending charges following a domestic assault on 33rd Avenue. •Police were called about two separate civil disputes, one about an insurance company and the other about a paving operation that might not be an actual business. •A wallet found on Second Avenue North was returned to the owner. •No injuries were reported after a single vehicle accident in the 2700 block of Highway 3. •Another civil complaint was received about a Canyon Street business; the complainant said a purchase was not as expected. •A hit and run that took place on Church Street on Aug. 8 was reported. •An injured deer was reported on Highway 21. •Police were called to a verbal dispute about finances on 19th Avenue North. •A non-aggressive dog was reported to be running loose in the 1100 block of Highway 3A. •A vehicle passed others on a double solid line on Highway 21 near Mallory Road. •Search and rescue protocols were activated when police received a report that a male might have fallen into the water near Pilot Bay Road. The search was cancelled when the male showed up elsewhere. •A complaint about noise from Millennium Park was received from Cedar Street.

•Charges are being recommended following a domestic dispute that involved threats on Highway 3A. •A medallion and a rock were reported to be missing from a purchase on Northwest Boulevard. August 18 •A vehicle collided with a deer on Hepher Road at Highway 3A. •No injuries were reported when a vehicle struck a power pole in the 15000 block of Highway 3A. •Police located a reported possibly impaired driver. Move will make Cook too busy

To the Editor: Why are we on water restrictions while we have two rivers and getting water from the creek that is running dry? It sure doesn’t make any sense to me. What does the brewery use for its water supply? We are paying for water every month and every household has to or you would shut off their supply. What is wrong with this picture? We are trying to make a point. Our lawns are dying, our gardens are dying. What will we do for our veggie

To the Editor: As a longtime resident of Creston, I would like our mayor and councilors to seriously reconsider the highway

are addicted to selfies. We tend to see other faces splayed across the media. Often the souls we see on the screens and pictures are so far removed from our lives — geographically and culturally — it is just too easy to target

The Corinthians were notorious for letting it all hang out. The Apostle Paul, as he is prone to do when things are serious, makes a list of sinful practices for us to LEE ROM EXUAL INS avoid or, as the opening verse By Pastor Ron Benty states, to “flee from”. The kinds of sexual practices in Paul’s list include fornication, adultery, Wynndel homosexuality and prostitution. If Community you read Paul’s letter, carefully, there is no one sexual sin, no one Church target group. For example, earlier, in chapter 5 of the same letter, Paul has to address a family case of incest between a son and a stepmoth- those guys, and to categorize and er. Of course, this means, especially project what should be reserved for with regard to sexual sins, that I must our own self-reflection upon those always begin first with the man in the other persons. In other words, it is mirror — with my own family and merely automatic to blame the govhome, in my own heart, gazing at my ernment, blame the radicals, blame the rich, blame the bureaucrats, blame, own reflection. realignment to Cook Street. Extra Foods is probably the busiest store in the downtown area, and moving the large trucks from Canyon Street to Cook Street would only cause additional problems. The town parking lot and a daycare also need access from Cook Street. Unfortunately, this new route would not be the solution to the many empty stores on Canyon Street, as the tourists will follow the traffic down the new Cook Street road. Many years ago, the department of highways purchased land for Highway 3 to bypass Creston. I believe it still owns it. Perhaps this alternative route could be looked at and the trucks would therefore bypass Alice Siding, as well. Another solution would be the upgraded Erickson Road that some trucks already use. second nature to target other causes — out there — for whatever sexual tendencies and drives we all experience. Often, all we see in the news is a sea of writhing placards and jostling multicoloured arms and legs. The mob is always simmering if the protest is addressing sexual activity, because sex is so intrinsic to our nature. The atmosphere is so on fire, we feel we will be attacked if we blow our nose the wrong way. I am not blaming our sins on the media, but I do know that the media is a bigger distraction than ever to taking a long hard look into my own reflection and my own soul. I know that many will adamantly disagree with me for even mentioning the sexual sins that we practice and for even attaching the word sin to our intrinsic nature. Still, my prayer, regardless how you take this message, is that by Christ’s grace, which graces all graces, you and I would each be able to rediscover a clear, undistracted window into our own souls, so that we could each see our own selves as truly as God sees each one of us. Ron Benty is the pastor of the Wynndel Community Church.

Examine your life thoroughly

In this column I’m going to examine, in detail, the first half of the koan that 13th century Zen master Eihei Dogen quotes in his essay, “Mountains and Rivers Sutra”. He wrote, “The green mountains are always walking: a stone woman gives birth to a child at night.” In discussing this koan, Dogen says, “Mountains do not lack the characteristics of mountains.” That is, mountains are mountains because they do the things mountains do, and possess the characteristics that mountains possess. We call it a mountain because it’s tall and it’s made of certain elements. But Dogen is not just talking about mountains. For Dogen, mountains represent everything. What he says about mountains is true for humans as well. We are full of the characteristics that make us who we are. No one else has our characteristics. Because of this uniqueness, your life is like no other life that has ever existed, or will ever exist. Dogen goes on, “Mountains always abide in ease and always walk.” Like us, they are both profoundly at rest and always walking. That’s what existence is. Existence means you are always profoundly at rest, and you are always in movement. Then he says, “Examine in detail the characteristics of mountains walking.”

www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca 5

He is telling us to study our lives. Do this when sitting in meditation. When he says to study the characteristics of mountains walking, he is telling us to study the particularities of how we live our lives. How many of us would agree

A Zen'sEye View Kuya Minague that we have characteristics we are not thrilled with, that we think should be different? We feel we could improve aspects of our physical appearance, our psychological makeup, and our habits. But Dogen says no, don’t improve your characteristics. It’s your characteristics that make you a unique aspect of existence. And that existence is profoundly settled and at rest, and it is also in constant motion. Just study how this is true. Don’t try to evaluate, plan and strive to change your life. Just study it at ever-deeper levels and see how at every moment

you are at rest and in motion. Change is going on all the time. We think mountains don’t walk because it seems that, on the surface, they aren’t doing what human beings do. But they are walking. They, like us, are always coming from stillness to activity, always changing. For us every moment is a moment of activity: the mind’s activity, the body’s activity, the heart’s activity, the soul’s activity. For Dogen, that is how we walk, and that is how mountains walk. So don’t doubt that mountains walk. Dogen concludes by encouraging us to penetrate these words, to study them and understand them deeply. Suggested practice: Each time you notice yourself criticizing one of your characteristics and wishing you could change, remind yourself that you are always changing, that you don’t need to force change. Relax into rest and allow the change to take place. The mountain will transform in its own time. Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at Sakura-ji, Creston’s zendo. This column is part of a long essay on an essay by 13th century Zen master Eihei Dogen and is inspired by the teaching of Norman Fishcher. For more information, Minogue can be reached at 250-428-6500, and previous columns are available at www.zenwords.net.

Let’s not forget the others

Like most who are in the final third of their life (statistically speaking) I tend to joke about one of the most common and fear-inducing signs of aging. It is a defense mechanism of course. Dementia is no laughing matter. Dementia is expected by experts to affect an increasing number of people around the world by doubling every two decades. It’s a startling statistic. But it is one that draws attention because people in positions of power tend to be on the older side of the population and they either know someone who is affected or fear that their increasing forgetfulness is a harbinger of worse things to come. If dementia is the current star among mental illnesses, it is far from the only one, and it should be courteous enough to share the stage with its cousins that affect younger people. The subject came up this week as I went through the police news with RCMP Staff Sergeant Darryl Hammond. A number of mental health issues were cited as we scrolled through the week’s worth of files opened for each case. Hammond, who has spent the last 18 years in the Lower Mainland, has seen more than his share of police incidents in which mental illness have played a role, and his comments reflected the frustration often felt by those whose job it is to battle crime. In study of crimes committed by people with serious mental disorders, the American Psychiatric Association found that “only 7.5 per cent were directly related to symptoms of mental illness.” “Only” might be a peculiar word choice. “When we hear about crimes committed by people with mental illness, they tend to be big headlinemaking crimes so they get stuck in

people’s heads,” said lead researcher Jillian Peterson, PhD. “The vast majority of people with mental illness are not violent, not criminal and not dangerous.” But if the proportion of crimes committed doesn’t seem high,

Lorne Eckersley I suspect that the frustration with having to deal with this particular class of “criminals” is very high. Most of the policemen I know chose the field because they have a sense of justice and a true belief that policing makes our communities better. Their view of a criminal is a person who chooses to break laws to gain personal benefit. Those crimes — robbery, drug dealing, even violence — tend to fit that mould. But when a criminal act is committed by someone whose behaviour is dictated or permitted by mental illness, it is an entirely new ball game. Who wants to go to a crime scene and come up against an individual whose brain chemistry is interfering with rational thought, and who might not be in control of his or her own actions? A different set of skills is needed to deal with the situation, which is especially challenging because there is a broad range of mental illnesses, all of which present in their own ways. An educational course here and there is not likely to prepare one for the variety of responses a policeman might come across. It is now more than 30 years since the province, jumping on a North American trend, decided to shut

down large mental health institutions, places that routinely produced horror stories about both treatment and behaviour. The closure phase was the easy part. How to provide services to people with mental illnesses afterward was trickier, and in my estimation we have done a lousy job. Wander around the downtown core in most cities and you will come across people who suffer from depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and a myriad of other conditions. Under the best of circumstances they might have a shot at living a more ordinary, productive life. But mental illness is also often associated with poverty, unemployment, homelessness and substance abuse, all complicating factors that make the medical issues more difficult to identify and deal with. These folks, through no fault of their own, tax systems, not least of which is policing. When I first began to write the police news more than a decade ago, I was astonished at the time and effort members of our local detachment devoted to one particular mentally ill woman. She was living on her own out in a rural area and regularly called police to report imaginary incidents. The acting commanding officer at the time told me about his efforts to connect her with mental health services and engage her family to get her some much needed help. And she wasn’t a criminal, just a generator of complaints that ate up policing time. Imagine how much more complicated things get when a mentally ill person turns to criminal activity to pay for drug habits or simply to get food, clothing and shelter. Dementia, we acknowledge, is a frightening and growing problem in our communities. But it is far from being the only one. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

The eternal question: Kuskonook or Kuskanook? GREG NESTEROFF Nelson Star

We recently began looking at the origin of Kuskonook, formerly known as Kalama, Armstrong’s Landing, and Goat River Landing. The current name was established on Jan. 26, 1898 when Kaslo and Slocan Railway president Daniel J. Munn and chief engineer John Hamilton Gray arrived to survey the townsite. It was first mentioned in Kaslo’s British Columbia News of Feb. 4, 1898 under the headline “Kuskonook forever”: “The Kaslo and Slocan Land company last Wednesday decided to call the new town at the south end of the lake Kuskonook. It is an Indian name signifying ‘End of the lake.’ ” Although embraced today for its uniqueness, at the time the Nelson Economist scoffed: “Kuskonook! And people will ask what’s in a name? On the ear of the aborigine it may sound well, but the cuss and the co and the nook will seem a curious combination to those not acquainted with the beauties of the native language or Chinook.”

Neither Alan (left) and Charlie Wilson nor the Ministry of Highways could agree on the spelling of Kuskonook vs. Kuskanook. This clipping is from the Creston Valley Advance of Dec. 4, 1997. Ads promoted Kuskonook as the planned terminus of the company’s Nelson and Bedlington Railway as well as the “only feasible townsite” for the CPR’s Crowsnest Railway, something their rival was hardly inclined to accept. Kuskonook is also the name of a creek, although whether the creek gave the town its name or vice versa isn’t clear. However, the translation given by the townsite promoters appears accurate. The Ktunaxa dictionary at firstvoices.com/en/Ktunaxa/words gives ?a•qasak as “close, near, against the edge of something” and ?a•kuqnuk as “lake.” (Porthill, Idaho, just across the border from Creston, was previously known as Ockonook — a post office opened under that name in 1893. Ockonook was said to mean “rocky point” in the Ktunaxa language. The online dictionary gives ?a·kiў‡a?nuk as “large, flat rock” and ?a·kuq‡i‡nuk as “rock writing, painted rocks.”) The spelling of Kuskonook versus Kuskanook has long been contentious, but the truth is it has always appeared both ways: Kuskanook turned

up in the Nelson Miner only one day after Kuskonook’s earliest mention. Still, Kuskonook was the preferred spelling until 1906 when the CPR launched its new Kootenay Lake sternwheeler, the S.S. Kuskanook. Why would they name their ship after a rival company’s town? Was the alternate spelling deliberate? It’s hard to say, but in any case, it confused the issue. The post office, which operated from 1898 to 1918, used Kuskonook, but most maps today show Kuskanook. Both spellings have their adherents. The debate reached absurd heights when the Ministry of Highways’ northbound sign (probably installed in the 1960s) read “Kuskanook, Unincorporated” and a newer southbound sign read “Kuskonook, Unincorporated.” Maybe they were just hedging their bets? (The northbound sign has since disappeared.) “It’s a serious controversy among Kuskonook residents of which there are seven permanent and a few temporary,” the late Alan

Wilson told Brian Bell of the Creston Valley Advance in 1997. Even Wilson and his father Charlie, who took turns as regional director for the area, were “totally opposed.” Charlie insisted on an O, maintaining that was the original spelling. But “most of us just don’t like it with the O. We like it with the A,” Alan said. “It’s been an A as long as anyone can remember.” “A name is a name,” Charlie retorted. “Look at your tax notice. Everything is spelled with an O. I’ll haunt anybody that tries to change it.” The Gazetteer of Canada and BC Geographic Names website both prefer Kuskonook, but the federal Fisheries and Ocean Dept. has Kuskanook on its sign at the harbour entrance, just beyond a Highway 3A pullout called the Kuskanook Rest Area. The Wilsons, however, lived on Kuskonook Road. When the new Kuskanook marina opened, the Advance ran sideby-side photos of Alan and Charlie Wilson pointing to their preferred highway signs, with the headline “Vowel movements.” Next: Kuskonook vs. Kuskanax. This is 108th in a semi-alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names by Nelson Star editor Greg Nesteroff. The first part of the Kuskonook/ Authorized Retailer Kuskanook debate 223 - 16th Ave N • 250-428-2044 appeared in the Aug. 13 Quality Eye Care & Quality Eyewear Since 1949 Advance.

Volunteer-built bridge connects Kaslo trails BY WILL JOHNSON Nelson Star

The brand new Unity Bridge in Kaslo is a 130-foot, 50-tonne community project that cost $201,000 and took eight years to finance. Officially dedicated on Sunday, it will connect the north and south sides of the Kaslo River Trail, opening up new options for hikers — they can now choose between a 3.7- or 10-kilometre loop. “The name Unity stands for the fact that it unifies the trails, unifies the north and south sides of Kaslo, and it shows what a small group of volunteers can do when they have support from people all over the world,” said society president Val Koenig. The society was able to raise all but $15,000 of the bridge’s cost through international plaque sales. Over 70 volunteers assisted with the project, and Koenig estimates about 35 per cent of Kaslo's adult population belongs to the society. The timbers used for the bridge were sourced locally from Hamill Creek Timber Homes. Local contractors and companies provided free labour and support. “This bridge is 100 per cent built by volunteers with no paid labour,” said Koenig proudly. “Gwil Cranes of Castlegar came out with a 200-tonne crane and 141,000 pounds of counterweight to put it in.” The society received financial contributions from people in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa. The bridge was designed by Kaslo baker Silvio Lettrari.

The Kaslo Trailblazers hosted a ribbon-cutting for their Unity Bridge, which was eight years in the making. Here (from left) the Trailblazers’ treasurer Ken Butt, Kaslo Coun. Kelly Knoll, Columbia Basin Trust’s Linda Lafleur, Regional District of Central Kootenay Area D director Aimee Watson, Trailblazers’ president Val Koenig and secretary Stu Heard make the cut.

“He designed our first bridge [installed in 2007] and we liked it so much we had him do the second one the same,” Koenig said. One enhancement of the Unity Bridge is that it’s entirely wheelchair-accessible, dropping from a four- to a two-foot arch. Koenig said Pennco Engineering was

Marian Evelyn Holmes (nee Freeborn)

March 12, 1920 ~ August 21, 2015

Marian Evelyn Holmes (nee Freeborn) was born on March 12, 1920 at Listowel, Ont. She attended grade school to graduation of Grade XII in Listowel and after graduation, became Secretary for Listowel High School. She moved to Hamilton, Ontario and attended the Canada Business College completing an included course in Pitman Shorthand. Following completion of this course she became the private secretary for the president of Canadian Canners Ltd. in Hamilton until she married Paul Holmes in 1946, who was in the RCMP. After fourteen years in Hamilton, they were transferred to Saskatchewan where they resided at Glaslyn, Lloydminster and later moved to Calgary, Alberta. Marian then worked for Insurance Adjusters and Alberta Land Titles. In 1974, they decided to move to Salmon Arm, BC, and in 2007 moved once again and the last time, to Creston to be closer to family. The couple had four children, Lynda (Maguire, deceased in 2008, also in Creston), David, Brian and Dayle (Todd). During her years, Marian became an ace seamstress and quilter. When the children were small she made most of their clothing. She also made wedding gowns and heavy knit sweaters for sale to augment the family income. She was a life member of the Salmon Arm Quilters Guild. Marian was the recipient of the RCMP Commissioners' "Second Man Award" for voluntarily assisting her husband Paul with RCMP administrative and other tasks at Glaslyn, a one-man detachment. In 2015, Marian suffered congestive heart failure which ultimately ended her life on August 21, 2015. Marian was cremated and is interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery alongside her oldest child, Lynda. She was a loving wife and mother, and will be sadly missed by her adoring husband, children, nieces, nephews and many others. She will always be lovingly remembered.

She graduated from bible school in 1939. Emma got her nursing qualifications in 1944 and went to Liberia, West Africa as a missionary for 12 years. When she returned, she worked at Edmonton General Hospital for 2 years, then worked at Creston Valley Hospital for 17 years. Emma was a member of Erickson Covenant Church. She is predeceased by her parents Chris and Bertha Weme; brothers Ted and Palmer; and brothers Tommy and Willie. She is survived by her husband and lifelong partner Francis Edey; and numerous nieces and nephews. on the trail-building aspect of their mandate. They plan to extend trails out towards South Fork, and ultimately cross the highway to connect to the KasloSandon wagon road. Koenig said he’s thrilled to reach the end of the eight-year process. “It feels fantastic.”

Marjorie Lucian Powers Feb 27, 1921 ~ Aug 17, 2015

Marjorie Lucian Powers, a resident of Crest View Village, passed away peacefully on Aug 17, 2015 with family by her side, at the age of 94 years. Marjorie was born and educated in Mazenod, SK. She married E. Manning Powers in Creston on November 21, 1951 at Trinity United Church. She was a true homemaker in all senses of the word. A gardener of flowers, vegetables and fruit, she canned and preserved for her family. Marjorie was also a gifted sewer. She would spend many hours searching in abandoned "ghost town" buildings for bottles for her antique bottle collection and loved camping with her husband and children in the summer months. In retirement she enjoyed many trips with her beloved husband. Marjorie is predeceased by her husband (Edward) Manning Powers in February 2013; brothers Donald Martin (Creston, BC) and Norman Martin (Regina, SK); and sister Gladys Norberg (Mazenod, SK). Thunder Cats gearing up for exhibition games BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

About 30 players, including returning and committed players, remain out of 70 hopefuls who tried out for the Creston Valley Thunder Cats at the weekend’s main training camp. They’re now in the middle of a busy week, getting in top form for Sunday’s 7 p.m. intrasquad game before hosting the Beaver Valley Nitehawks on Tuesday, the Grand Forks Border Bruins on Wednesday and the Fernie

Ghostriders on Sept. 4 for exhibition games. Head coach Jeff Dubois said the three-day camp was a success, with 20 more players competing than in 2014. “It went really well, both in terms of the turnout … and in terms of the actual caliber of the guys on the ice,” he said. “The vast majority of the guys on the ice were guys who are going to play junior hockey.” Five of those trying out for Creston’s Kootenay International Junior Hockey League team

came from the Creston Valley Minor Hockey Association’s midget rep team. “It’s a chance for them to get a foot in the door, and get an affiliation, and maybe get a taste of junior hockey,” said Dubois. One Creston Valley 16-yearold, Brody Ryan — a forward who has played for the last two years at Kelowna’s Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy — was asked to join the team at the end of the camp, beating out other prospects before the coaching staff saw him in exhibition games.

came to Thunder Cats recruiting camps in Vancouver and Calgary over the summer. And just because 40 didn’t make it this time doesn’t mean they have no future with the Thunder Cats. “Now we’ll have the opportunity to track them and keep in touch during the season,” said Dubois. “It’s a really good opportunity to get the pipeline going for future seasons.”

“Brody was our top ranked 16-year-old among the coaching staff,” said Dubois. “He earned the spot.” If cutting 70 players down to 30 — and from there to a maximum of 23 — seems like a challenge, it is. “There was a lot of debate among our staff about the guys we were cutting,” said Dubois. But those 70 had survived an earlier cut themselves, having been pared down from about 250 who

At press time, 39 firefighters, five helicopters and nine pieces of heavy equipment were battling the fire, which was caused by lightning and discovered Aug. 14. The smoke from that fire was minimal, though, compared to the smoke blanketing southern B.C., much of it coming from the 19,240-hectare Stickpin fire in Washington, five kilomteres south of the border near Grand Forks and Christina Lake. That prompted, for the second time in a week, the Ministry of Environment and Interior Health Authority to issue a smoky skies advisory for the southern areas of the Kootenay and Boundary regions on Aug. 20. “In addition to local smoke from forest fires that continue to burn in the regions, those areas are being affected by transboundary smoke from forest fires south of the border,” said the advisory. “Smoke concentrations will vary widely as winds, fire behaviour and temperatures change.” As of Tuesday’s press time, that advisory had not been lifted. The advisory recommends that residents avoid strenuous outdoor activities. “If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, contact your health care provider: difficulty in breathing, chest pain or discomfort, and sudden onset of cough or irritation of airways,” it said. “Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, and lung or heart disease.” South of the border, some Porthill residents were allowed to return home Sunday after being put under a voluntary evacuation alert on Friday, as firefighters worked on the scene of the 2,500-hectare Parker Ridge fire. The fire 11 kilometres south of Porthill is now 27 per cent contained, according to inciweb.nwcg.gov. “Despite a red flag warning last night, the fire had minimal activity and no significant growth,” said the website. “There is a potential for the fire to become active today with breezy winds on the ridge top. With the smoky conditions yesterday, the heavy helicopter was only able to perform a couple of bucket drops.” All of this information was up-to-date as of Tuesday morning. The Mount Midgely fire northwest of Creston was 80 per cent contained as of Monday. Firefighters have been working to build a guard around the lightningstarted blaze, which is about 480 hectares (originally reported as 600), by clearing flammable debris, dropping retardant or digging until a level is reached where nothing can be burned.

They have also been burning out selected portions, which has increased the amount of smoke rising at the scene. “This burn out is necessary to limit the potential growth and direction of the fire,” said an update at bcwildfire.ca. “The objective is to secure containment of the north flank and will help establish 100 per cent containment.” See WILDfIreS, page 19

Brian Lawrence

The Mount Midgely fire, seen from Lower Wynndel Road, was extra smoky on Saturday as crews performed burn out operations.
