Ferry project faces scrutiny Rutherford Elementary School students Haliyah Peck, 12, left, Bella Berry, 11, and Keoni Kerr, 12, join about 50 students, parents and school staff to protest potential closures of Departure Bay Eco and Rutherford elementary schools. The rally was held Monday morning in front of Nanaimo school board offices on Wakesiah Avenue.

With the Nanaimo school district board expected to decide on next steps for an updated facilities plan on Wednesday (Sept. 2), parents are voicing opposition to potential school closures. Depar ture Bay EcoSchool received unanimous school board approval in March to be designated as an ecologically-focused academy, but was also one of four schools recommended for closure in the updated plan. Student enrolment and inability to expand on the site were among reasons given.

Chelsea Slobodan, founder of Save Departure Bay Eco-School, wonders why the school would receive its designation only to be closed. “So why grant a school academy status, which means we can take kids from out of catchment, we can increase our enrolment, we have revenuegenerated programs we’re working on. Why would it even come up, is a big concern,” said Slobodan. She said if people just sit back and don’t protest, the school will be closed. Rutherford Elementary was another school recommended for closure, with declining enrolment cited

as an issue. Tina Bray, cochairwoman of the Rutherford Open and Thriving group, said elementary school enrolment is no longer decreasing. “We’ve already closed seven elementary schools,” said Bray. “When you look at the declining enrolment that they’re talking about, we’ve finished doing that at the elementary school level. We’ve levelled off and we’re starting to increase. “So the fact that we spent the last 10 years closing elementary schools to keep up with the declining enrolment and now it’s increasing? We’re done that ... we need to be plan-

ning for the future.” Dale Burgos, school district spokesman, said the district is at a very early stage in the updated facilities plan process and trustees will decide whether to move ahead with public consultation at the meeting on Wednesday. “In the event that the board wishes to move forward with school closure consultations, the district will share public meeting schedules, which could begin in the fall,” Burgos said in an e-mail. North Cedar Intermediate and Woodlands Secondary are other schools recommended for closure. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

As Island Ferries continues to search for investors, Nanaimo city council is asking how long it continues to hold faith in the group, according to Mayor Bill McKay. Island Ferries, which hopes to start a $63-million passenger service between downtown Nanaimo and downtown Vancouver, did not secure a $14-million New Building Canada Fund grant before the election was called this August and the province does not see the application as a priority, the mayor reports. Island Ferries signed a lease with the City of Nanaimo last year to operate a new service from the south industrial waterfront and has maintained it will be ready for startup six months from financial close. It’s been looking for final investment since October 2013 and applied for federal funding last year with sponsorship from the City of Nanaimo. Council is now asking how long it continues to hold faith in this group and if it should actively go looking for another potential ferry operator, said McKay, who believes councillors need to have a discussion about the project sooner rather than later. “How long do you wait? And do you ... continue to have faith in this group, which I do,” he said. “I’ll be looking to council for further direction.” Representatives from Island Ferries did not respond to requests for an interview. “These folks have been working on their project for about nine years now and I’ll tell ya, the level of tenacity I see with this group is quite astounding,” McKay said. “They’re not giving up.”

Water tenders and fire trucks blocked one of Nanaimo Parkway’s southbound lanes for most of the day Tuesday while firefighters overhauled a bush fire south of the Northfield Road intersection. It was the second serious bush fire in the city, both of which were started by campfires on vacant land in less than a week.

CREWS DEAL with three human-caused fires since Friday. BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN

An early morning bush fire created heavy smoke and slowed Nanaimo Parkway southbound traffic for much of the day Tuesday. Firefighters were called at about 6 a.m. to fight the blaze, which had engulfed about a quarter of a hectare when crews arrived. The fire was located in wooded, rough terrain bordering the Nanaimo Parkway Trail south of the Nanaimo Parkway and Northfield Road intersection Tim Doyle, Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant chief, said the fire did not ignite any trees in the area, but burned into heavy brush and undergrowth

making it difficult to fight and snuff out hot spots. Eighteen firefighters and three firetrucks, which had to be positioned in the southbound slow lane of the parkway to pump water to the site, remained on scene until late afternoon as water tenders ferried in water to soak down the area. Alan Millbank, fire prevention officer, said several homeless people were camped in the area and the fire was sparked by a campfire. This is the second serious fire caused by camping on vacant lots in Nanaimo in less than a week. On Friday, a fire caused by cooking at a campsite and driven by strong winds in Harewood burned several hectares of vacant land on Fourth Street and threatened a number of nearby homes before firefighters got the upper hand. No one was injured in either incident, but the fires tied up

at the hearing and his next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 30 when it will be determined if his case moves to trial depending on the plea entered at that time. Street, 55, former principal at Woodlands and Lady-

significant portions of the city’s firefighting equipment and manpower. A third bush fire that broke out Monday near the Nanaimo River about two kilometres up Nanaimo River Road from the Island Highway drew a response from Cranberry Volunteer Fire Department and B.C. Wildfire Service crews, including six firefighters and a helicopter. “It was a grass fire that started in fire department jurisdiction,” said Donna MacPherson, fire information officer. “They asked for our help so we sent two initial attack crews of three people each.” MacPherson said the fire was about 0.1 hectare in size and crews had it under control by Monday evening. She didn’t say what started the fire, but the investigation into what sparked it has been turned over the the RCMP. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Councillors sworn in

Four newly-elected councillors will take their seats for the first time at the District of Lantzville with an inaugural council meeting on Monday (Aug. 31). It will mark the beginning of a term for four councillors, who’ll swear an Oath of Office, but it’ll also be the first time since May council has been restored to full power. Four politicians resigned earlier this year, leaving two councillors and the district’s mayor to continue civic business with limited powers. A byelection was held Aug. 8, with wins by Bob Colclough, Will Wyn Geselbracht, Dot Neary and Mark Swain. The meeting will also be new Chief Administrative Officer Brad McRae’s introduction to the community. He replaces Twyla Graff, who resigned as CAO in April. The meeting is open to the public. It begins at 7 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 257 at 7225 Lantzville Rd.

Natural beauty hooked doctor

NaNaimo pickEd over other areas. By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN

New Nanaimo doctor Stuart Ockelford was hooked on Vancouver Island at first sight. He was supposed to set up a practice in Abbotsford. He was in the midst of being recruited from England, he enjoyed the people he had met there and he felt the need for his services, but the pull of Vancouver Island was too great. “Once I left the ferry at Tsawwassen on this beautiful Sunday morning with the sun out, blue skies, sailing through the islands, I thought God it’s beautiful,” he said. “Within 24 hours I’d fallen in love with Vancouver Island.” Ockelford is one of five new doctors who have moved to the

Harbour City in the last year and among the few who is accepting new patients. In this region, 11,880 patients are believed to be without a family doctor, and 20-25 per cent of physicians are expected to retire in the next three years, according to the Nanaimo Division of Family Practice, which has set out to address the problem with a recruitment and retention program. Ockelford is one of the few new doctors who’s been able

to take new patients. He’s accepted 1,200 since starting at the Medical Arts Centre in 2014. This community won his family over, he said. They didn’t want to be in the thick of a city like Vancouver, and Victoria’s property prices were too high. They liked the scener y here, its central location and access to all the things they wanted, including a ski resort. He could also have a work/life balance, which wasn’t possible

under the U.K. medical system. “It’s great,” said Ockelford. Dr. David Sims has also been newly recruited to Nanaimo and will arrive this November from Yellowknife. He’ll be taking over a practice at Wellington Medical Clinic. The community, geography and nearness to family were all factors in his decision, but a supportive Division of Family Practice helped. A recruiter sent his wife job appointments to look at and reminded him that there was a home in Nanaimo. “To know that there was a very supportive and open and attentive division that was waiting was a big deal for me,” he said. The Division of Family Practice is looking to attract more doctors, with the help of a new recruitment coordinator, mar keting and welcome packages.

North-end fire hall debated

I

hammoNd bay spot identified 10 years ago for further coverage. By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN

The need for a Hammond Bay fire hall hasn’t disappeared, according to Nanaimo Professional Firefighters Local 905 president Mike Rispin, who wants to see it built before lives are lost. Nanaimo city council will debate construction and staffing of a $2.4-million Hammond Bay fire hall this year as it heads into 2016 budget discussions. It’s also called for a staff report, expected this fall, on how a new fire hall and different staffing scenarios could have affected recent fires in the area. A home on Jester’s Way was heavily damaged and others threatened by blaze in early August. A sixth fire hall for the city, proposed for Hammond Bay and Nottingham Drive, has been on the wish list for a decade after being recommended as a priority in the city’s Standard of Response Coverage Study. It’s now penciled into the 2016 budget but has seen

three previous delays, including for a core review. The city’s standard to respond to emergency calls is six minutes, allowing it to fight fires, limit property damage and increase the chances of survival for cardiac arrests. Trucks, however, were only able to meet that response time for 31.83 per cent of 340 incidents that happened in Hammond Bay between 2011-13. “We’ve had three fairly large fires in that area with greater damage than usual because of our response times. Now it’s just going to happen one of these days it’s going to take a life,” Rispin said. Mayor Bill McKay doesn’t believe the city should proceed with a new station until council determines a location and how it’s going to be manned. He’s also interested in seeing a new fire plan that addresses shortcomings throughout the community, not just Hammond Bay. Coun. Diane Brennan, who made the motion for a report on recent fires and potential staffing models, wants evidence to support a decision on station construction. “This will help us make a decision based on public safety as well as budget,” she said. news@nanaimobulletin.com

CANADIAN COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER AWARD 2015

EDITORIAL

Thanks goes to firefighters The deaths of three firefighters in Washington State are a reminder of how much these brave people are putting on the line, on both sides of the border. Last Wednesday, three U.S. Forest Service firefighters died after their vehicle crashed and was likely caught by flames as they battled the Okanogan complex of fires near the town of Twisp, Wash. Four other firefighters were injured including one who was taken to hospital in critical condition. They were on the initial attack, trying to stop a fire before it could threaten nearby communities – in some cases, their hometowns. Firefighters know how dangerous their jobs can be, whether it is day-to-day operations of our local department or forestry service crews battling major wildfires. But it’s so very easy for the public to take their work for granted, and it’s stunning when such a tragedy happens. Considering the level of danger, it is amazing that relatively few lives are lost. Evacuees from the Rock Creek blaze and other fires also are dealing with personal adversity in loss of homes and livelihoods or the uncertainty of not yet knowing what has been lost. But we who aren’t directly exposed to the fires, complaining about the smoke and ash in the air, and the other inconveniences brought on by fires burning in our region and south of the border, might imagine the risk is small. The deaths of Tom Zbyszewski, Rick Wheeler and Andrew Zajac show us how great the risk firefighters face is, and continues to be for the thousands of firefighters battling blazes in B.C. and Washington. They are still digging in with shovels and axes in searing heat and choking smoke, struggling against so many fires it is hard to keep track. We extend our thanks to these brave men and women who are putting their lives in front of wildfires to protect people and property from devastation and death. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith,V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

Speaking of political dances, Premier Christy Clark has made a couple of appearances at fire sites where homes and businesses have been threatened or destroyed. In her first fire scene appearance this summer, Clark warned that drought and huge fires may be “the new normal” for B.C. as climate warms and shifts. This is great positioning for the government’s plan to attend the latest global climate doom festival in Paris this fall, but it’s not borne out by recent forest fire results. In terms of dollars spent and area burned, the years 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 were all well below average. Last year and 2009 were substantially above average, but 2008 and 2013 were among the quietest years on record. Is drought the “new normal” too? The B.C. government’s own climate change forecast is for increasing overall precipitation, albeit with more rain and less snow. Snowpacks for southern B.C. were indeed the lowest on record this past winter, but that record only goes back 31 years. And when were high snowfall records last broken? That would be 2011. ◆ Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

Council has deeper problems To the Editor,

Re: Minority signs code of conduct, Aug. 20. I sat in on the governance meetings where the code of conduct document was discussed. I too believe in the value of respectful behaviour. However, I see this document as a cover-up for a more serious problem. In my opinion, this council is like a dysfunctional family and the ‘troublemakers’ are the indi-

viduals who are letting us know that things are not as pretty as some would like us to believe. No amount of politeness and respectful behaviour can cover up the fact that we have a mayor and staff who are not abiding by the rules, and yes, those rules were also covered in the governance meetings. It was very clearly stated that the majority of council decisions must

I’ve been a lifelong federal Liberal party supporter, but this time I am voting Green. If you care about the future of this planet for yourself and your descendants, now is the time to act with your vote. People living in the cities don’t notice the effect on the forest lands like the people who work in the forests. It’s getting drier and drier and this is the second consecutive year that the seedlings have failed to survive as the drought periods get longer. Forget the voting patterns in your life, as the other parties haven’t delivered. The future is our children and there is nothing for them if people’s thinking and actions aren’t changed, and changed quickly. Corporate greed and exploitation rule the day. Our generation has largely been responsible for it so we must change now. Only you can change this Earth for the better.

Mike Gogo Nanaimo

To the Editor,

Re: Voters sorting out federal election issues, Opinion, Aug. 13. Two key election issues are leadership and values. Conservative Bill C-59, the Economic Action Plan, expands financial supports for families and requires balanced federal budgets. The NDP voted against these two pillars of prosperity. The same bill also implements Canadian values of mercy and security. Terrorist groups like Islamic State engage in systematic rape, enslavement of women, torture and murder. Conservatives voted to prohibit Canadians from travelling abroad to join ISIL. The NDP voted to allow it. Prime Minister Stephen Harper urges Canadians to vote with “moral clarity, strength and resolve.” Will you vote NDP and let terrorists from Canada join the ISIL perpetrators? Or will you vote Conservative and protect foreign women from atrocities? This election is profoundly about leadership and values. We are electing a Parliament, but we are choosing who we are as a nation.

If we care about our planet, it’s time to act and vote To the Editor,

Nanaimo News Bulletin 9

To the Editor,

When interviewed after the tabling of the 2014 budget last February, Justin Trudeau was asked if balancing the budget was a priority for him and if so how would he go about it. He answered “the commitment needs to be a commitment to grow the economy and the budget will balance itself.” The last part of that response has been taken out of context and used to ridicule Trudeau for thinking a budget will balance itself. However, if you are honest and take the whole of what he said, he is in the august company of Flaherty, Thatcher, Reagan and Harper himself who routinely point out that economic growth is crucial to balancing a budget. Why does the Conservative party keep trying to mislead citizens with this cheap and dishonest advertising that is – even in the early weeks of the campaign, along with all the other instances of prevarication and obfuscation – already becoming intolerable.

he Bailey Studio is a place where people have come together for years to put on a performance. Home of the Nanaimo Theatre Group, the Rosstown Road venue has served as a space for general meetings, rehearsals and performances for more than four decades. The studio has also become a place where people have fallen in love, as is the case with Ian and Meg Matthews. It was September 1978 and Ian was in his early 30s when he met a young woman in her late 20s during one of those general meetings. “We were introduced at the meeting,” Ian said. “The next week we ended up rehearsing a play together.” It was during the theatre group’s production of Riders to the Sea that the two fell in love. By July 1979, the couple had married. “It was a speedy romance,” Meg said. The Bailey Studio, a 172-seat theatre, has come a long way since it was first acquired by the theatre group in 1971. “It has been step by step, bit by bit,” said long-time theatre group member Joanne Husband. Nanaimo Theatre Group traces its roots back to June 1961, when Roger Desprez and his wife re-established a drama club within the city. According to records, the group was called Nanaimo Drama Group and the Nanaimo Drama Club by various newspaper outlets. It was only until November of

During the 1960s, the Nanaimo Theatre Group operated without a permanent home. “We would perform every place we could,” Desprez said. “We tried the basement of the old library. We tried the Malaspina Hotel. Eventu-

ally we tried to do musicals in Beban Park, but they only lasted for so long because the acoustics were so bad and the hard chairs were beginning to bother people.” In 1970, the theatre group began looking for a place of its own and considered numerous sites. “We tried looking at the old Orange Crush

For the next couple of years, the group began using the space a rehearsal centre and also held a few performances. “We made a little theatre out of it in the lounge,” Desprez said. A few years later the group, with the help of an $8,000 grant, began upgrading the building to include an improved stage, small seating area and lighting. The Nanaimo Theatre Group recently made upgrades to the roof of the building. “All we wanted was a place where we could rehearse and keep our stuff,” said producer and past president Sheila Coultish.

Hopefully nothing happens to the Cambie,” said guitarist and audio engineer Andy Schichter. “We are not giving up.” Echo Nebraska formed in November after Schichter met up with singersongwriter Devan Christodoulou and bassist Gunn Park, who were looking to record an album. he said. “It isn’t just Devan, Gunn and I writing the parts. I think it will be nice having everyone’s contributions.” In March, Echo Nebraska performed at a benefit concert in Vancouver for My Artist’s Corner, a program within the Canadian Mental Health Association that aims to reduce isolation and improving social skills through art. Schichter says the concert was important to the band, as some of them know people who have dealt with mental health issues. “We have ... had family members that have struggled with mental illness,” he said. “We have done some charity work for an organization called My Artist Corner.” Echo Nebraska performs at 9 p.m. Tickets are $8 at the door. was released in January, but was recorded before the band was officially formed. “We put it together even before we thought about putting a band together,” Schichter said. Having an album ready to be released before the band was officially announced allowed them to “hit the ground running” and gave them something to promote right away. “We weren’t really a solid live band when we recorded the songs,” Schichter said. “That was our intention. When we launched the band in November we wanted to make sure the CDs were pressed already.” Echo Nebraska has since written 10 new songs as a complete group and have been trying them out during performances. “The big thing now is we have more members involved,”

In July 1976, Greg MacAleese, a police officer investigating the fatal shooting of Michael Carmen in Albuquerque, New Mexico needed help in solving this senseless murder. He created a crime scene reenactment, put up his own reward money and guaranteed anonymity. This started the program we know today – Crime Stoppers. For his efforts, Detective MacAleese was named one of the people who changed the face of the United States in the 1970’s and was also named the country’s Police Officer of the year. Since adopting Crime Stoppers, New Mexico’s crime rate has dropped significantly. In 1979, Crime Stoppers became a national program. In 1984, the world-wide anti-crime movement “Crime Stoppers International” was created and today there are over 1000 programs in 21 countries. 1982 - Calgary started the first Canadian program 1990 - Nanaimo and District Crime Stoppers began

Sneak peek at the new Audi electric car By Keith Morgan

Audi has released an artist’s impression of its e-tron quattro concept car, which will be unveiled The sporty SUV is designed from the ground up and follows the Audi “Aerosthetics” concept, combining technical measures for reducing aerodynamic drag with creative design solutions. Movable aerodynamic elements at the front, on the sides and at the rear improve the air flow around the car. The aerodynamically optimized underbody

is completely closed. With a cd value of 0.25, the car sets a new record in the SUV segment. This contributes considerably to the long range of more than 500 kilometres. The study is based on the second-generation modular longitudinal platform, which provides considerable scope for the drive system and package. Its length is between that of the Audi Q5 and the Q7. Its typical SUV body and flat, coupe-like cabin give the Audi e-tron quattro concept a very dynamic appearance.

‘‘

Its typical SUV body and flat, coupe-like cabin give the Audi e-tron quattro concept a very dynamic appearance.

Keith Morgan

’’

Coupe-like cabin gives the Audi e-tron quattro concept car a dynamic appearance. The spacious interior offers room for four people. The large lithium-ion battery is positioned between the axles and below the passenger compartment. This installation position

provides for a low center of gravity and a balanced axle load distribution. And that gives the car better driving dynamics and driving safety than other vehicles in the segment.

PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

Audi uses its experience with the electrically driven Audi R8 e-tron sports car for the drive system. Three electric motors – one on the front axle and two on the rear axle – drive the Audi

e-tron quattro concept. And that makes it an electrified quattro, the e-tron quattro –efficient and dynamic at the same time.

New kit for Focus ST offers more performance for vehicle Focus ST customers can get more performance out of their vehicle thanks to a new kit from Ford. And on that front, the new Focus ST mountune upgrade kit delivers in spades.

The idea of a streetlegal, reliable, largely stock 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine making nearly 300 lb/ft of torque might have seemed ludicrous 10 years ago, but the components

of the MP275 Focus ST performance upgrade not only combine to produce up to 296 lb/ft of torque with 93-octane fuel, they are designed for maximum reliability as well.

When the parts installation and tuning is performed by an authorized Ford Performance technician, Focus ST retains its factory warranty – a huge benefit for any customer looking to get the

most out of the ownership experience. The heart of the system is a performance ECU calibrated to deliver a more aggressive engine-mapping program, including a quicker throttle

response, without compromising durability. Power spikes from 252 hp to 275 hp. The upgrade kit includes: • mountune induction kit • mountune high-flow

intercooler • mountune mTune handset • All installation hardware A mountune air filter end cap can be added to the mountune high-flow air filter to control sound.

DEATHS

Addison,

Helen Minerva (nee Cook)

October 5, 1916 - August 21, 2015 With deep sadness, we announce Helen’s passing on August 21st, surrounded by the love of her family. Born in Nebraska on October 5, 1916, she grew up in an Irish farming family and was no stranger to hard work. Helen moved to Montana, then Alberta, and then to the island where she met and married her dear husband, Joe. With their son, Bob, they created many happy memories at their cabin at Horne Lake, still enjoyed by the entire family. Helen was most content when gardening, which she called ‘therapy for the soul’ - and she loved music, meeting friends for the entertainment afternoons at Bowen Park for over 30 years. Helen’s gracious nature, warm hospitality and bright sense of humor made every person feel uplifted and welcome in her presence. Most of all, Helen loved her family and happily told everyone they were her ‘pride and joy.’ Left with grieving but grateful hearts for the many wonderful years we got to share with her are her loving son, Bob (Ann) Addison, Gram’s grandchildren, Penny (Pat) McMann, Derry (Cathy) Addison, and Tracy (Keith) Windle, step-grandchild Roxanne (Tim) Grant and their daughter, Brooklyn, 8 great-grandchildren: Sean, Jamie, Russell, Caroline, David, Larissa, Kyle and Mataya, and 2 great-greats, Aeylah and Preston, as well as sister-in-law, Anne Addison, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Philip’s Church, 1797 Cedar Road, Sunday, August 30 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her honour, to the Heart and Stroke Foundation at www.heartandstroke.com. Our family would like to thank the compassionate caregivers at Keeping House and the third-floor staff at Nanaimo Regional Hospital, as well as family & friends for your love & support. “You may search everywhere, but none can compare, to our Wild Irish Rose.

I

t is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Anne May Thompson (nee Cartwright) in the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver General Hospital at the age of 81. She died peacefully after several years of living with Parkinson’s Disease and MDS. She will be deeply missed by her husband Ken; son Barry (Julie); daughters Cheryl McKay (Brian), Karen Bowering (John), and Leah Ann Rodine (Al); nine grandchildren; and her sisters Lois Miller and Jo Danielson, sister-in-law Gwen Thompson, and their families. Anne was born and raised in Nanaimo. She moved to Vancouver in 1951 to attend Normal School and began teaching in 1952. She received a BEd (1973) and a MEd (1983) in Educational Administration. Anne’s educational career included classroom teaching, Vice-Principal and Principal as well as various leadership roles at VSB, SFU and the Ministry of Education. Following retirement in 1996 she was invited to provide educational leadership at Vancouver Hebrew Academy, She was involved for over 30 years in Delta Kappa Gamma, an international organization for developing women in educational leadership, as a member and then a director in Canada and internationally. Anne will be remembered for her grace, generosity of spirit, hospitality and caring nature. Her family and faith were most important to her. She and Ken were married for 61 years. Together they were very involved in Oakridge Baptist Church. Anne gave many hours of service as a pianist, choir member, Sunday school teacher and many other leadership roles. Devoted to her Christian faith she served on the Board of Governors at Northwest Baptist Theological College for 30 years and was Chair for 7 years. We would like to thank the entire medical team in the Palliative Care Unit at VGH and the SubAcute Care Ward on the 7th floor who provided Anne with incredible comfort in her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Anne’s memory to Camp Qwanoes and/or Parkinson Society. A memorial Service will be held Friday, August 28, 2015 at 1 p.m. at Oakridge Baptist Church 6261 Cambie Street, Vancouver.

The family of Elio Bravo would like to say thank you to his doctors and their staff; Dr. Cline, Dr. Baille, Dr. Booth and the nurses who have supported him. A special thanks to the VIHA home support. The compassion and kindness of these individuals allowed us to spend many more years with Elio and towards the end alleviated much of his suffering. A heartfelt thanks from all of his family.

She is predeceased by her husband Art in 1986. Missing Mom are her children: Skip (Sue), Brian (Esti), Brenda (Al), Barry (Linda), Pat (Mike), Gayle (Doug), Dale (Rhonda), Cindy (Troy), 23 Grandchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren and Tucker, her four legged child. Mom was a farm girl born in Cando, North Dakota along with her twin sister Ella. Their exploits were legendary, confusing teachers and boyfriends alike. She homesteaded with her family in Saskatchewan and eventually worked her way west before settling in Nanaimo. Mom had a strong work ethic and met every challenge with determination, humor and faith. She was an excellent cook, professionally at the Nanaimo Travellers Lodge and for her family which gave her the most joy. She was famous for her roast beef dinners with Yorkshire pudding, cabbage rolls, apple pies and biscuits just to name a few. Mom loved to garden and was proud of her four o ‘clocks and tiger lilies. She produced an amazing number of knitted dolls and slippers for family and friends. She loved people, animals, music, dancing, a good laugh, crib, cards, Judge Judy and Bad Boys, doing for others, volunteering (the Nanaimo Boxing Club and the NDP),  living in Deerwood, her annual birthday celebration at Rathtrevor Beach and her children most of all. Mom gave so much and asked for so little. She was one of a kind and had a unique saying for every occasion, her favorite being "Up Your Feathers!â€? Mom was not shy and was never stuck for something to say. Her immense love, support and compassion were unconditional. You could always count on Mom! Our sincere thanks to Mom's wonderful neighbours and friends in Deerwood, the great people from home support, Karen her housekeeper, the staff at NRGH, especially the 4th & 5th floor and anyone else who was part of Erma's world. A memorial service will be held Saturday September 12th at 1:00 at the Bethel Pentecostal Tabernacle Church in Ladysmith, located at 1149 - 4th Ave. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Cancer Research.

Nanaimo News Bulletin Thursday, August 27, 2015

www.nanaimobulletin.com

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To my former manager Donna. I miss working with you every morning. Thanks for everything you’ve helped me with in my new career.

BOUQUET To Aaron Pritchett for putting on an awesome show at the VIEX and being so nice to the disabled girl in the front way. It was great to see.

BEEF To the mean-spirited vandal who smashed the gnome door in Neck Point Park. The gnomes had it removed to be refurbished. A forest camera will be installed and the next time this happens the gnomes will send out a tribe of trolls to deal with the vandal.

BEEF To the thief who broke into a house on Kenwill Drive and took a lockbox. The contents, of no value to you, are the memoirs of a deceased husband and father. Please return to the RCMP.

BOUQUET To Ahmed A Omar from Nanaimo Denture Clinic for putting a smile back on my face where others have failed. Your hard work and skills have paid off. BEEF To city and bus transit for not keeping all shelters clean. Too much litter and often garbage cans are left full for days. BOUQUET To Reg, from Wal-Mart, who found my seahorse earring. Trish’s earlobe thanks you. You made my day. BEEF To the air carrier for allowing your inconsiderate pilots to buzz homes. Just because you are late for shift change does not give you the right to make us suffer on the ground. Go fly somewhere else. BOUQUET To Wendy at ICBC. She is not only calm and knowledgeable, but she really listens, hears and understands the concerns of her customers. BEEF To the secretarial staff at the clinic for your horrible phone skills. Way to make a single mom feel bad for having to work. I don’t feel comfortable bringing my son there. BOUQUET To the staff at Speedy Glass on Nicol Street. Troy repaired the chip in my windshield and glued back the rubber around the window for no cost. BEEF To all the smokers in our city parks. It’s against the law and it’s disgusting. If you want to kill yourselves go ahead, but don’t make other people suffer.

BOUQUET To the lady who treated our group of eight who were having our monthly lunch at the Windward Pub. The lady said she was so happy to see our lot enjoying ourselves. Now we are all overjoyed. BEEF To my sister’s inconsiderate neighbour. Every day and evening she has to listen to music so loud walls shake and she can’t even hear the TV. It wouldn’t be so bad if it was decent music. BOUQUET To Judy, Carolyn and family for hosting a lovely luncheon for me and my friends for my 90th birthday.

BOUQUET To Dean and Const. James Kay who helped me to push my scooter up Fourth Street and Park Avenue when it decided to stop working. They were so helpful and I appreciate their time. BEEF To the golf course that uses so much water the greens and fairways are soggy. A waste of water and ruining what used to be a good little course. BOUQUET To Kiwanis Lodge second floor staff for the care they provided to Walter Wakelem. RN: Monica and Kim; LPN: Celeste, Chris, Marie-sue, Kara, Erin; Care aides: Leslie, Kelly, JoJo, Daniel, Devon, Sat, Chris. BEEF To the horrible mess on the ground at Wellington Secondary School – looks like an earthquake zone. BOUQUET To Jordan at Nanaimo Honda and Michelle at Nanaimo National Car Rental. Honda’s handling of the air bag recalls is outstanding.

BEEF To whomever redesigned the crosswalks to use ‘bump outs’ to shorten the distance between sidewalks. To get a wheelchair-bound client from the back of a van onto the sidewalk one has to now roll them out into the traffic. BOUQUET To Joanne and staff at Benson View Veterinary Clinic. You know as soon as you go in you will get the best care. BEEF To the person in the white jeep who nearly struck a woman and her child in the crosswalk. Pay attention. BOUQUET To Laura at Bellamy Orthodontic Clinic for going above and beyond to help me with a dental emergency before my holiday. BEEF To the beefer about having coffee poured on your windshield because you parked your car crooked. Learn how to park properly so that good coffee won’t go to waste.

BEEF To management at the seniors’ home and the health authority who say they cannot help residents get to recreational activities thereby sequestering lonely seniors in their rooms until meal times. BOUQUET To the ladies painting the benches in and around Davey Park and to all who cut grass and maintain it. BEEF To the plumbing company that charged almost $150 for a quote to install a new hot water heater. You didn’t get the job because your quote was $700 more than your competitor. BOUQUET To Jennie at West Coast Helicopters, the staff at the Crow and Gate, and all the wonderful people who showed up to help me celebrate my 80th birthday. BEEF To the woman who made a three-hour disturbance over a simple disagreement. I was sitting in the yard with my family and heard everything. BOUQUET To the family who not only found, but delivered my wallet to me. It is such an amazing feeling to know there are still good people in the world. BEEF To people who leave door hangers on homes. It becomes a clear sign there is nobody home and an invitation to thieves. Have some respect for other people’s property and stop this risky practice. BOUQUET To Dr. Dodo. He cared for my grandfather, Walter Wakelem. His bedside manner was incredibly loving and caring. Our family cannot thank you enough. BEEF To my neighbours who harass my tenant on where he parks. There are no ‘no parking’ signs in our cul de sac. He pays to live in our neighbourhood just like the rest of us.

Rowers quick at major race

Nanaimo Rowing Club athletes were in fine form at a prestigious event. The club sent a contingent to the 133rd Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in St. Catharines, Ont. earlier this month. Riley Knight, Ayla Malainey, Meg Montgomery and Claire Thomas teamed up to finish second in the quadruple sculls in their U17 division. Knight and Malainey also rowed to a third overall in doubles and Knight was fifth in singles. For more information about the club, please visit www.nanaimorowing club.com.

Bucs will face unfamiliar foe The junior B Nanaimo Buccaneers will face an entirely different kind of challenge this week. The city’s Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League team plays its fourth and final exhibition game this Sunday (Aug. 30) against the Mission City Outlaws of the Pacific Junior Hockey League. The teams face off Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. The Bucs start the regular season Sept. 4 and play their home opener Sept. 10 when the Comox Valley Glacier Kings visit the NIC for a 7:15 p.m. faceoff.

like that,” said Shawn Swanson, Timbermen general manager. He expects the Eastern teams to have big, strong guys with good stick skills inside, but thinks his team could have an edge with foot speed and getting up and down the floor. “When we run the ball, if we get our legs going,

!

Forget Donald Trump, Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton. There’s only one presidential race the Nanaimo Timbermen are interested in right now. That would be the Presidents’ Cup national senior B lacrosse championships next week (Aug. 31-Sept. 6) in St. Catharines, Ont. It’s the third straight berth in nationals for the senior B Timbermen, but this time they really, truly earned the right to be there, winning the B.C. championship earlier this month. “This year it’s a little more rewarding,” said Shane Chalker, T-men veteran. “It’s a better feeling than the past, because we kind of went by default or whatever in the past. This year I’m feeling pretty good about it.” Joining the Timbermen and the host St. Catharines Saints in the tournament are the Capital Region Axemen, the Snake Island Muskies, the Onondaga Redhawks, the Six Nations Rivermen and the Rockyview Knights. T h e T- m e n d o n ’ t know much about the opposition, but they know the games are going to be tough. “It’s definitely a step up from what we’re

I think that’s when we’re at our best,” said Miller. Another difference at the tournament is the prevalence of wood sticks – a relative rarity in B.C. – which allow defenders to be even meaner around their c re a s e . T h e T- m e n anticipate having one or two guys in their lineup wielding wood sticks, but they don’t expect it to be a major factor in wins and losses. “Only if you’re effective with them,” Swanson said. “You have to be able to pick up a ball and pass it.” The tournament format is different this year. The teams have been split into two pools and there are fewer guaranteed games. “Every game means something,” Swanson said. “You don’t get to lose one and think you can come back from it.” So the stakes are high, but the Timbermen look forward to the challenge and the whole experience. Even though it’s their third straight tourney, they know the opportunity won’t come around every year. “Myself and a couple other guys, we’re all kind of coming to the twilight of us playing senior B,” said Chalker. “So it means a lot to me right now personally, and, I know, a couple other guys, for sure. “And a couple of the young guys here, it’s probably a pretty cool experience for their first time out.”

league recognizes minor football players It’s minor football week in the Canadian Junior Football League and that means free admission for minor players at this week’s games. All 12 teams in the league, including the V.I. Raiders, will welcome minor football players with free admission when they wear their minor football jersey and are accompanied by an adult. “CFJL teams are an integral part of the communities that they represent,” said Jim Pankovich, league commissioner. “Minor football, along with the Canadian Junior Football organizations, is important to the development of our next generation athletes and community leaders.”

Raiders ready for Huskers

I

nOT Taking low-ranked team lightly. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

Coming off a 39-32 road loss to the Kamloops Broncos, the Vancouver Island Raiders will look to bounce back at home against the Valley Huskers Saturday (Aug. 29). At 0-5, the Huskers are cellar dwellers in the B.C. Football Conference standings, but Raiders head coach Jerome Erdman and staff want to ensure the team doesn’t take this week’s opponent lightly. Erdman said he needn’t go any further than game film from Kamloops to prove his point. His team has to work

hard to get a win and get back on track. “We certainly did not play very well and we’re not in a position where we can take anyone lightly,” said Erdman. “We have to come in and keep working hard like we have in the past and we’re not that good of a football team that we’re in a position to take anybody lightly and they know that.” The Raiders amassed 141 yards rushing last week, on the strength of 121 yards from Nathan Berg, and Erdman said they must continue the ground attack against Valley. “My philosophy is that a good running game is vital to win at, no matter what level you’re playing at, or what game you’re playing at. You’ve got to be able to run the ball effectively,” Erd-

man said. “It’s great for time management, it gives your defence a break and grinds down opponents.” Erdman lauded the play of special teams last week and said the defence has to step it up this week. “That was the worst game by far for our defence,” Erdman said. “The first four games we did a really good job of stopping the big play and they got a few on us, so we’ve got to get back to that mentality of stopping the big play and playing more aggressively and tackling better on defence.” Game On ... Saturday’s game kicks off at 4 p.m. at Caledonia Park. Tickets are $12 for adult, $10 for seniors and $5 for students. Children five years and under get in for free. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Battle brewing for goaltender starting slot

I

SEVEN ViE for position on Clippers. By Karl yu The News bulleTiN

As Nanaimo Clippers’ training camp hits full stride, head coach Mike Vandekamp will be keeping an eye on the goaltenders. Last season, the Clippers made it all the way to the B.C. Hockey League championship before losing to the Penticton Vees, with team MVP Guillaume Decelles patrolling the crease. Decelles won’t be returning and seven goalies will vie for a spot on the roster. Camp began Monday and Vandekamp said it is a fresh start in goal, but too early to anoint any favourites or potential starters. He said the ability to stop the puck is foremost, but he is looking at other attributes. “Consistency is probably the biggest thing,” said Vandekamp. “You don’t need guys to make spectacular saves all the time, but you’re looking for some consistency in that regard and so that’s really what we pay attention to the most.” Of the seven, Vandekamp said Jonathan Reinhart is the only goalie signed to the roster. Reinhart played junior B hockey in Elmira, Ont., last season. In addition, there is Jakob Severson, an affiliate player who spent time with the Clips last season and also played with the junior B Nanaimo Buccaneers. Emilien Boily won a championship with a junior college team in Quebec last season. Jakob Walter played major midget hockey last season for the Valley West Hawks and was a high draft pick in the Western Hockey League.

Austin Roden played for the South Island Royals of the B.C. Major Midget League and like Severson, also was an affiliate player for the Clippers last season. American Evan Plotnik played for a midget AAA team in San Jose last season. Bryce Scheibel played at Pacific Coast Academy in the Victoria area last year. All will remain with the Clippers leading up to the Rhodesie Cup intrasquad game Friday (Aug. 28) and Vandekamp said cuts would come following that game. Game on ... The Rhodesie Cup intrasquad game takes place Friday (Aug. 28) at 6 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. Nanaimo’s first B.C. Hockey League preseason exhibition game is Saturday on the road against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. Nanaimo’s first home exhibition is Wednesday (Sept. 2) when the Victoria Grizzlies visit Frank Crane Arena for a 7 p.m. faceoff. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com
