ries from local writers such as Trisha Elliot, Mason Buettner and Liz Bevan, who will address topics ranging from retirement planning to healthy eating. “We’ll have one story about eating raw, and whether it’s right for you,” Cowan says. “Then there’s a story about short-term mental health resources available for those struggling with something in their lives.” Amy Robillard interviewed a financial consultant for a piece on the financial viability of your

New season nears;
Volunteers needed at Charles Bailey Theatre Volunteers gathered with at the Trail night market last week, to promote upcoming shows.Gallery.
SHERI REGNIER West Kootenay Advertiser
Before any performance takes centre stage there’s scores of behind-the-scenes work to be done. With the fall and winter lineup now in place, Charles Bailey Theatre (CBT) staff is asking for volunteers to step up and help put on the show. “If you love the performing arts and want to contribute to the vibrancy of your community, then consider becoming a volunteer for the Trail and District Arts Council (TDAC),” says Nadine Tremblay. “Young or old, experienced or neophyte, we are looking for individuals to help us with the volunteer needs at Charles Bailey Theatre.” More hands are needed for all aspects prior to performers arriving in town. Besides needing muscle for setting up tables, chairs and sound equipment, the theatre has social jobs open like ticket taking, decorating and bartending. Tremblay suggests those who enjoy meeting performing artists and being part of the backstage goings-on, then roles in welcoming entertainers to the area, booking accommodation and providing hospitality riders, are also up for grabs. “Whether you are looking to meet new people, cater to your love for the arts or to be part of an admired organization working on worthy projects, then what are you waiting for!” she said, adding that volunteer pamphlets are available at the box office and anyone interested can contact TDAC at info@trail-arts.com. Since the arts council took the reigns to run the CBT last year, there’s been about 50 per cent more shows and a few past renters back on stage. “We are not just providing a space,” said Tremblay. “We are really about developing a culture around performance and art. And so far, there’s indication that things are moving in the direction we are aiming.” Tremblay signed on as the marketing and public relations person for the Regional District

of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) last July, and has been steadfast in improving the theatre’s visibility while bringing in acts for all ages, including a children’s series that is growing in popularity. She said there’s three levels of art: supply, access and demand. The latter being, TDAC’s assurance that the audience experience is fully encompassing. “That has a lot to do with working with children,” explained Tremblay. “Making sure they understand the value of art, so they can hear it, feel it, see it, and be empathetic for other cultures. “Because nothing makes you appreciate art more than if you’ve created it, and participated in it yourself.” Access to the theatre is another aspect to her job, which means the venue is fully operational, available for rent, and the arts council supports and promotes incoming shows. In the last year, Tremblay has developed a press kit for renters, a newsletter, a large audience on Facebook and soon, the option of purchasing tickets on line. “I am really looking forward to this because we are now available for programming grants,” said Tremblay, referring to the non-profit TDAC. “That means
we can get even more of the artist costs subsidized, which helps a lot because then we can lower ticket prices.” For example, Tremblay is bringing in well known Canadian children’s music performer Fred Penner Oct. 3. The subsidy can help cover Penner’s fees, which in the end will help lower the cost for the entire children’s series. “I want people to come for Fred Penner because they know who he is,” she said. “But I am going to keep them coming by showing them what else is out there.” Her aspiration is to introduce lesser known artists to the community, because their performances are also colourful and uplifting. “I am sure they will be blown away by the dance company I hired from Montreal,” said Tremblay. “And the amazing trio of beat-boxing and classical musicians from Vancouver that I’ve hired.” Looking into the second year of the plan, Tremblay said the focus is (pending) capital improvements, such as ventilation upgrades and air conditioning. “These are all hopes,” she said. “I am really looking forward to it, because the value of art is really about becoming a whole human being.”

Thursday afternoon, smoke filled the Columbia River valley. Outside Oasis, a helicopter flew between the river and the Hanna Creek fire trying to help quench the flames. The fire at Hanna Creek, 8 k.m. northwest of Trail, was 100 per cent contained and in mop-up by Friday, and went into patrol Sunday morning. It was just one of four new fires in the area. There’s a lightning-caused fire 5.6 k.m. northwest of Renata. It was estimated at 23 hectares on Sunday morning, with one helicopter on the scene and a fuel-free zone surrounding it. A fire near Tenderloin Creek, 20 km south of Edgewood, was estimated at 50 hectares on Sunday and was 80 per cent contained. The fourth fire at Kelly Mountain, 6.5 k.m. northeast of Fruitvale, was in mopup by Thursday and being patrolled by Friday. There’s also a fire at Big Sheep Creek. The blaze was estimated at 190 hectares on Sunday morning, and was 30 per cent contained. Due to the fire an area restriction was placed on the Seven Summits trail on Saturday afternoon. The trail is closed from the Old Cascade Highway to the top of the Red Mountain Resort until further notice.
The Southeast Fire Centre’s helicopters could be seen flying throughout the area, working to suppress the numerous fires.

Blueberry facts: Blueberries are often touted for their nutritional benefits. Some of those benefits are well known, while others are more obscure. * Blueberries have the highest antioxidant capacity of all fresh fruit. Antioxidants are responsible for neutralizing free radicals in the body, which can affect aging and contraction of diseases. * Native Americans once called blueberries “star berries” because the blossoms make a star shape. * Blueberries can help ease digestive issues and prevent constipation. * Many people equate cranberries with urinary tract health, but blueberries are also good at reducing bacteria growth that causes urinary issues. * Some believe that blue-

berries can help reduce belly fat. * America’s favorite muffin is the blueberry muffin. * Blueberries may help prevent damage caused by heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. * The anthocyanin found in blueberries can help improve eyesight. * The annual harvest of North American blueberries would cover a four lane highway from Chicago to New York if spread out in a single layer. * Blueberries were not cultivated until the beginning of the 20th century, becoming commercially available in 1916. * The white, powdery substance on blueberries is called “bloom.” Bloom indicates fresh berries.

Take It To The Top!
One-hundred and eighth in a semialphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names Last week we began looking at the origin of Kuskonook, formerly known as Kalama, Armstrong’s Landing, and Goat River Landing. The current name was established on Jan. 26, 1898 when Kaslo and Slocan Railway president Daniel J. Munn and chief engineer John Hamilton Gray arrived to survey the townsite. It was first mentioned in Kaslo’s British Columbia News of Feb. 4, 1898 under the headline “Kuskonook forever”: “The Kaslo and Slocan Land company last Wednesday decided to call the new town at the south end of the lake Kuskonook. It is an Indian name signifying ‘End of the lake.’” Although embraced today for its uniqueness, at the time the Nelson Economist scoffed: “Kuskonook! And people will ask what’s in a name? On the ear of the aborigine it may sound well, but the cuss and the co and the nook will seem a curious combination to those not acquainted with the beauties of the native language or Chinook.” Ads promoted Kuskonook as the planned terminus of the company’s Nelson and Bedlington Railway as well as the “only feasible townsite” for the CPR’s Crowsnest Railway, something their rival was hardly inclined to accept. Kuskonook is also the name of a creek, although whether the creek gave the town its name or vice versa isn’t clear. However, the translation given by the townsite promoters appears accurate. The Ktunaxa dictionary at firstvoices.com/en/ Ktunaxa/words gives ?a•qasak as “close, near, against the edge of something” and ?a•kuqnuk as “lake.” (Porthill, Idaho, just across the border from Creston, was previously known as Ockonook — a post office opened under that name in 1893. Ockonook was said to mean “rocky point” in the Ktunaxa language. The online dictionary gives
Neither father-and-son Charlie and Alan Wilson nor the Ministry of Highways could agree on the spelling of Kuskonook vs. Kuskanook. This clipping is from the Creston Valley Advance of Dec. 4, 1997. ?a·kiў‡a?nuk as “large, flat rock” and ?a·kuq‡i‡nuk as “rock writing, painted rocks.”) The spelling of Kuskonook versus Kuskanook has long been contentious, but the truth is it has always appeared both ways: Kuskanook turned up in the Nelson Miner only one day after Kuskonook’s earliest mention. Still, Kusknook was the preferred spelling until 1906 when the CPR launched its new Kootenay Lake sternwheeler, the SS Kuskanook. Why would they name their ship after a rival company’s town? Was the alternate spelling deliberate? It’s hard to say, but in any case, it confused the issue. The post office, which operated from 1898 to 1918, used Kuskonook, but most maps today show Kuskanook. Both spellings have their adherents. The debate reached absurd heights when the Ministry of Highways’ northbound sign (probably installed in the 1960s) read “Kuskanook, Unincorporated” and a newer southbound sign read “Kuskonook, Unincorporated.” Maybe they were just hedging their bets? (The northbound sign has since disappeared.) “It’s a serious controversy among
Kuskonook residents of which there are seven permanent and a few temporary,” the late Alan Wilson told Brian Bell of the Creston Valley Advance in 1997. Even Wilson and his father Charlie, who took turns as regional director for the area, were “totally opposed.” Charlie insisted on an O, maintaining that was the original spelling. But “most of us just don’t like it with the O. We like it with the A,” Alan said. “It’s been an A as long as anyone can remember.” “A name is a name,” Charlie retorted. “Look at your tax notice. Everything is spelled with an O. I’ll haunt anybody that tries to change it.” The Gazetteer of Canada and BC Geographic Names website both prefer Kuskonook, but the federal Fisheries and Ocean Dept. has Kuskanook on its sign at the harbour entrance, just beyond a Highway 3A pullout called the Kuskanook Rest Area. The Wilsons, however, lived on Kuskonook Road. When the new Kuskanook marina opened, the Advance ran side-by-side photos of Alan and Charlie Wilson pointing to their preferred highway signs, with the headline “Vowel movements.” Next: Kuskonook vs. Kuskanax
Nelson ubc writer-in-residency begins next month The instructor for UBC’s creative writing weekend intensive course in Nelson this fall will be available to consult with anyone in the community wishing feedback on their own writing, and information on publishing or other literary matters. Sonnet L’Abbe, an awardwinning author, editor and teacher, will be in Nelson from Sept. 25 to Nov. 7 to offer UBC Okanagan’s Writing From the Ground Up, a weekend credit course open to all comers. L’Abbe, winner of the 2000 Bronwen Wallace Award for emerging authors, has taught previously at UBC’s Kelowna campus. She comes to Nelson direct from her stint as 2015 writer-in-residence at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. She also teaches an online creative writing course for Vancouver
Island University. Thanks to a $1,000 grant from Nelson Rotary, and support as well from Nelson’s Kootenay Literary Society, L’Abbe will offer Nelsonites and area residents a chance to obtain professional feedback and advice on manuscripts, as well as insider tips on how to succeed in the current Canadian literary world. She will be available Mondays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. (Sept. 28, Oct. 5, Oct. 12, Oct. 19, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2) and Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Sept. 30, Oct. 7, Oct. 14, Oct. 21, Oct. 28 and Nov. 4). People interested in making use of L’Abbe’s knowledge and experience should email the Education Committee of the Kootenay Literary Society at emlfestival@gmail.com Please put “WIR appointment” in the subject line, and
indicate which day bests suits you. If you wish feedback on a longer work, please attach to your email a synopsis and 10 pages maximum of material. Those seeking feedback on shorter pieces (less than 10
pages) should send their writing sample along as an attachment. L’Abbe will consider fiction, nonfiction (memoir, travel writing, family history, etc.), poetry and scripts. “I got my own start in writing with the support of a writer-in-residence,” L’Abbe said. “So while I’m in Nelson I’m happy to talk to anyone looking for that kind of support.” Where L’Abbe will meet with prospective writers will be announced shortly. Her course, Writing from the Ground Up, will be held at the new UBC West Kootenay Teacher Education Program centre at 266 Baker St. More UBC course details, including how to register, are available on the website of the Elephant Mountain Literary Festival, www.emlfestival.com, under the “Courses” tab.

Nelsonites protest end of door-to-door mail Postal workers, politicians, and the general public protested Canada Post’s phasing out of door-to-door mail delivery last week in Nelson. About 80 people gathered in front of city hall for a rally. Speakers included Kootenay Columbia NDP candidate Wayne Stetski,
mayor Deb Kozak, and seniors’ advocate Joan Reichardt. “We already know that one of the biggest challenges seniors face when living on their own is taking the garbage out,” Reichardt told the crowd. “And you don’t have to take the garbage out
every day. This is another encroachment on the ability of seniors to remain independent.” Canada Post says in 2016 it will replace door-to-door delivery with community mailboxes. The corporation says jobs will only be lost through attrition, but the postal workers’ union questions is skeptical.

Superintendent’s Message The Labour Day weekend in September marks the end of summer for students and staff. September is an exciting time as we begin the school year helping students on their learning journey. We encourage all of our community to be actively involved with your schools. Talk to your child’s teacher and principal and find a way to stay involved and connected. Parental involvement really can make a difference in student achievement. All schools will be open at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8th for the registration of students new to the district and for any local Kindergarten and Grade One students not previously registered. Students will report for instruction on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at times noted below. September 8th will be a shortened day for students. Shortening the day will allow students an opportunity to become acquainted with their school, while at the same time enabling teachers to finalize their preparations for Wednesday, September 9th, the first full day of instruction. Kindergarten students will have gradual entry over the first two weeks so please contact your school for those times or visit the district website at www.sd20.bc.ca. To our existing students and families welcome back! To our new students and families, whether you are just starting kindergarten or moved here over the summer, a special warm welcome to your new school and district.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay has approved $10,000 for a Taghum boat launch feasibility study. The funds have been approved for areas E and F to be used to review potential locations for a boat launch in the Taghum/Blewett. Area E director Ramona Faust made the motion at Thursday’s board meeting. In July, Faust received a 300 signature petition from constituents, urging the regional district “to establish a

The company has erected no trespassing signs in the area, due to potential contamination issues. This summer the access was also physically restricted with large cement blocks and a trench. Ministry: ferries trump bridge for affordability Will Johnson West Kootenay Advertiser
Though some residents remain ambivalent about the replacement of the Harrop and Glade ferries, according to the Ministry of Transportation it’s the cheaper of the two options. “For both Harrop and Glade a cost analysis was completed and it was determined ferries continue to offer the most affordable solution, now and for the forseeable future,” wrote public affairs officer Sonia Lowe. However, the ministry won’t share their findings with the public until the tender process
closes in February 2016. Lowe said the new ferries will “be able to take more vehicles than existing ferries, with capacity increased to handle commercial vehicles at full highway loads.” The initial bidding process will be open for approximately five weeks, and up to three respondents will be shortlisted for the second stage, a request for proposals. If all goes according to plan the first vessel will begin construction in 2016, with both new boats expected to be in service by the end of 2018. The new Glade ferry will be able to hold nine vehicles
It was determined ferries continue to offer the most affordable solution, now and for the forseeable future,
compared to the eight the current one accomodates, while the new Harrop vessel will be able to hold 24 vehicles, compared to 18 on the present one. “The existing cable ferries serving those communities have now reached the end of their working life,” Lowe said. The current Glade ferry was built in 1948 and the Harrop ferry in 1949. Both ferries provide on-demand service and take about five minutes to cross. The Harrop ferry is in service around the clock while the Glade ferry takes a break between 2:20 and 5 a.m.

No second bridge for Trail in near future Sheri regnier West Kootenay Advertiser
Whether it’s the sinking Canadian dollar or an inflation explosion, one truth is known: the City of Trail will not have a second bridge anytime soon. Trail council unanimously agreed Monday night that the cost to build the pipe/pedestrian bridge is way out of reach following five bids that were, on average, $5 million above the expected $10 million cost. Trail Mayor Mike Martin opened the council meeting, addressing the high tender prices made
public during an Aug. 5 open tendering. “They are significantly above the budgeted amount that had been approved by the residents of Trail through a referendum and the engineering estimate associated with that,” he began, referring to There are 7 BILLION people. A fresh look at peacekeeping starts in the West Kootenay
Instructor Randy Janzen will be the primary instructor in the new Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping Program that aims to bring about positive change around the world.

so you can get in, get out, and get to the beach faster! Selkirk College is helping broaden the scope of peacekeeping by offering a unique program to equip individuals with the proper background to make positive changes in conflicted regions around the world. Starting in January, Selkirk College will offer the one-semester Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping Program. The first of its kind in Canada, the program has been developed in partnership with Nonviolent Peaceforce with a goal of strengthening the effort to deploy professionally prepared unarmed civilians to areas of violent conflict. “Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping (UCP) is important because violence between conflicting groups continues to be a major issue globally,” says Randy Janzen, the Selkirk College Peace Studies Program instructor who helped develop the program and will be the primary instructor. “More research is demonstrating that nonviolent strategies are much more effective in creating peace, both in the short term and long term.” UCP has been practiced by at least 35 different non-governmental organizations since 1990. In the past several years, the United Nations has become more interested in the use of UCP as part of its overall strategy to reduce violence and improve peacekeeping operations around the world. As UCP has evolved, a need to improve training and education has developed. Nonviolent Peaceforce—an international
organization that is leading the way in UCP operations around the world—developed a curriculum to train its employees. The Selkirk College Mir Centre for Peace was part of the review process for this new curriculum and asked if the curriculum could be used to offer a post-secondary citation in UCP. “UCP professionals provide direct physical protection to other civilians and work collaboratively with local groups to strengthen or build resilient local peace infrastructures,” Janzen explains. “Unlike traditional military peacekeeping or armed private security firms, this is done without the use of or reliance on weapons. As such it is based on a different paradigm, one that emphasizes building of relationships and the skill of communication, rather than power or the threat of violence.” A key principle of UCP is non-partisanship. UCP staff work diligently to gain the trust and respect of all parties involved. Specific tactics include accompaniment, protective presence, interposition, early warning/early response, information gathering and dissemination, and creating safe spaces. The program being offered in January will involve six modules that are cohort-based. Five of the modules will be completed on-line between January 11 and March 31 with the final module consisting of a two-week retreat focussed on experiential learning that runs between April 18 and 29 at the Castlegar-based
Mir Centre for Peace. “This program is geared towards anyone who is interested in working to reduce violence in the world,” says Janzen, who has been a Peace Studies Program instructor for eight years and has traveled to some of the most conflicted zones on the planet to work and build on his experience. “UCP organizations work in situations of civil war and also around the world in large cities, reducing violence in marginalized neighbourhoods.” One element of the program will include several international students who will take part both on-line and in the retreat. In an effort to help raise funds to make that aspect a reality, Selkirk College is hosting a fundraising dinner at the Brilliant Cultural Centre on September 26. The evening will include a traditional borsch dinner and admission to the Parfaite Ntahuba Mir Lecture. Find out more about this unique and exciting evening by going to selkirk.ca or calling 250.365.1288. The fundraising dinner and program are two ways Selkirk College is helping the proactive shift towards the way people take action on making the world a safer place. “UCP is only part of a large global trend of violence reduction that we have no idea is taking place if our only source of information is the evening news,” says Janzen. Learn more about the Selkirk College Mir Centre for Peace at selkirk.ca/mir-centre-for-peace.
Keep it clean out there.
