TERRACE - Heritage Park held a garage sale August 21 with everything from kitchen items to antiques to clothes on offer. All proceeds went to Heritage Park Museum community programming. More than $2,500 was raised. Corrine with grandchildren Danielle and Kierra show off some of their garage sale treasures.

KITIMAT - Councillor Mary Murphy is still encouraging people to attend the annual union-organized Labour Day picnic, even if she and other members of Kitimat Council have been specifically excluded from the event. Murphy asked for the letter from Unifor Local 2301, included in the August 17 council agenda package’s information packet, to be brought out under new business so she could speak to the issue. The letter is the one, signed by the local Unifor Business Agent Martin McIlwrath, which says the Local 2301 executive has motioned to “not allow Kitimat Mayor & Council to attend our 2015 Labour Day picnic event.” The picnic is an annual event in Kitimat. No one from Local 2301 has so far responded to The Northern Sentinel’s request for comment, and we were told last week the entire executive was away on union business and unreachable. The Sentinel is the sister newspaper to The Northern Connector. An effort to reach Local 2300 also did not result in a returned phone call prior to our press deadline. In reacting to the letter at the August 17 council meeting, Murphy said that as much as she’ll respect the union’s wishes she encouraged others not to boycott the event. “I wanted to say I hope that everybody puts their differences aside and...attend the labour day picnic and make it a really successful event,” she said. She also highlighted her

own history in establishing the picnic as an event in Kitimat. “I plan on following their wishes and not attend but I did want the community to know I was instrumental, along with many of my family members, of making that day a success. It’s advocating [improved] working conditions for labour and it’s a really good social and educational event. It’s in the honour of labour.” Mayor Phil Germuth said he hasn’t had much conversation with 2300 members on this issue but he has had a few words with 2301 members. “I’ve heard through the grapevine that some of [2300] workers weren’t happy [with the letter],” he said, but said he’s had a number of 2301 workers come by and all have been quite upset over it. His contact with the 2301 executive itself has been limited since the release of the letter. Germuth recalled what he felt was a very cordial conversation he had with 2301 president Sean O’Driscoll at Rio Tinto Alcan’s first pour special event in July where relationship building was brought up, but that was it until he learned they wouldn’t be invited to the picnic. “We had a good time. We talked about building the relations,” said Germuth of that event in July. Germuth also encourages people to attend the event and to not shut it out due to this current controversy. “We’re not advocating anyone boycott it. You should go out and have a good time,” he said, adding that he understands it’s an executive-specific decision and he isn’t holding any hard feelings on this to the general 2301 membership.

Man burned after boat explodes at Prince Rupert dock By Kevin Campbell

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT – One man was taken to the hospital with burns to the hands and face on Friday afternoon after his boat exploded near the Prince Rupert Rowing and Yacht Club. The Prince Rupert Fire Department was called just after 4 p.m.

on Friday to respond to the explosion, which fire chief Dave Mckenzie said was the result of the man working on the boat. “There were fumes ignited in the motor when the person was [aboard] and he was fuelling it. He went to vent it before starting it and the fumes exploded,” said McKenzie.

The boat has since been removed from the dock by the Coast Guard. “The boat’s gone. We had the Coast Guard take it away because of the fuel that was there after the fire — there was still lots leaking from the boat, so they took it to a remote site,” Chief Mckenzie said. While boat explo-

sions due to improper fume ventilation aren’t exactly common, they can happen under the right conditions, said McKenzie. “[People can mini-

mize the risk] by just being diligent when they’re filling it and making sure there’s proper ventilation when firing the boat up. It all depends on the boat,” he said.

“It comes down to what type of motor it is - inboard or outboard. This one was an inboard,” said McKenzie. “If you don’t vent them, they’ve got an

engine cover compartment, so now it becomes pressurized. Whereas in an outboard, you hook up a gas line to it, it’s out in the open and away you go.”

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - A garage sale and barbecue this Sunday is the latest in a series of events helping a five-year-old Terrace girl and her family deal with her battle against cancer. The barbecue and garage sale in support of Annabelle Demedeiros takes place at the George Little House beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m. It’s being organized by Leanne Ballinger, a Demedeiros family friends. Donations for the sale are welcome, and people can call 250635-7871 to have items picked up. An online campaign begun by another family friend, Britta Nordean, passed the $48,000 mark earlier this week, an amount that has far surpassed her original goal of $10,000. “I had no idea this would happen,” said Nordean, a long time friend of Brian and Nicole Demedeiros, the parents of Annabelle. “The community has been amazing.” Annabelle was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma Aug. 17 and Nordean began her GoFundMe page the same day. The family was first flown to BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver

Aug. 12 after Annabelle became unwell. Then tests were done. Neuroblastoma is a cancer related to tumours and Stage 4 is the spread of those tumours to lymph nodes and organs. Brian and Nicole have left their jobs and expect to be in Vancouver for at least a year while Annabelle undergoes treatment, said Nordean. “Right now their focussing on Annabelle.” That was one reason why Nordean set up the GoFundMe account – to reduce by as much as possible the financial stress on the family

while they concentrate on Annabelle’s treatment. Brian and Nicole are staying for now at BC Children’s Hospital but arrangements will soon be made to find accommodations. Donations have come in from companies and employees of places such as MacCarthy Motors, United Rentals and Your Decor. A trust fund has also been set up through the Terrace and District Community Services Society. “The Puckered Pig [food truck] collected $300 through a donation jar in just one day,” said Nordean.

City of Prince Rupert releases LNG GO Plan Survey results By Kevin Campbell THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - “And now the moment we’ve all been waiting for.” Prince Rupert Mayor Lee Brain aptly summed up the anticipation for the main highlight of last Monday’s council meeting, which was the first reveal of the final results of the 2015 Go Plan Survey. The survey, a two-month summer initiative led by the City of Prince Rupert and a hired statistician, had its purpose become crystal clear during the meeting. The main one, of course, is to identify shortcomings and areas to improve in all levels of housing in the city, but it also takes aim at densification analysis, green space, parks and trails and lot and land usage. The palpable anticipation by council and city planner and Go Plan Survey analyst Zeno Krekic was evident as the results from the survey are the first step to taking concrete action in addressing the city’s housing crunch, ranging from seniors’ housing to affordable to high-end. A wide plethora of information came back to council and city staff and the first to be mentioned by Krekic in his presentation last Monday was the rent sensitivity model. “An annual increase in rent is restricted to approximately 2.5 per

cent,” said Krekic. “Now that number – two per cent – doesn’t register any displacements. However, at three per cent, we have slight displacement, with 12 households displaced. This probably speaks towards things like ‘renovictions’, where units are being renovated and the rent increased. You can see how quickly it jumps – so at 10 per cent [rent increase], there are 26 per cent of [Rupert renting] households displaced and this translates to 573 households.” Some important numbers from the Go Plan Population Survey beyond the initial figures reported by the Northern View in July, include a Prince Rupert total population estimation of 13,766, compared with an earlier 2015 B.C. Stats report of 11,900. Twenty-one per cent of households want or expect to move within the next year, totalling 1,113 households. Of the rented households that expect to move, 42 per cent indicate they have no choice due to unaffordable rent increases, unsafe conditions and other involuntary reasons. The total labour force participation rate for those aged 18 or older is estimated to be 74 per cent, which equals a labour force of 7,634, with 7,053 employed and the remaining actively looking for work. The estimated unemployment rate is 7.6 per

cent, contrasted to a 2014 Labour Force Survey conducted by the province which pegs the North Coast and Nechako region as having an eight per cent unemployment rate. Of particular note was the ‘shadow population’ that emerges with cities undergoing potential booms in industrial activity. “While normal population change is generally divided among the three drivers of population change — births, mortality and migration — Prince Rupert’s demographic shift will largely be a function of worker migration. Existing population projections and estimation models do not account for this type of demographic change,” stated the results package. “The Go Plan Survey provides a timely, accurate measure of Prince Rupert’s total population, including the emerging shadow population.” Krekic reported to council that for every three camp workers industry in the city attracts, one more will come due to the opportunities that exist in the area, signalling a 3:1 ratio for a potential shadow population that traditional population studies don’t take into account. “Hospitals are going to have more people using them. We’re going to have recreation and transit use increases and our roads are going to be used more and all those types of things,” said Mayor Brain

last week. “So, part of the debate is to show through data and other places like Kitimat, that these shadow populations come with work camp accommodations because there’s a bunch of offsetting jobs that happen around the industry itself ... The more data we get, the better policies we can make to address it and we’re working with places like Fort McMurray and Kitimat – places that have experienced these things already. We’re lucky because we get to do this all before potentially a construction boom rather than try to figure it out during the process.” Krekic added that reasonable conclusions on the following topics can be expected within the next two to eight weeks, depending on the scope of the topic. Council will be briefed as soon as Krekic’s staff has analyzed the data on the topics: perimeter lots, green (undeveloped) lands, densification, camp locations, innovative (sustainable) housing, affordable housing and parks and trails. Coun. Barry Cunningham thanked Krekic for his work, but added that he would have liked to have seen some solid direction on which housing needs to immediately tackle first. “We have three senior housing developments in town here, each one them has a waiting list of be-

tween 15 and 20 people. That alone tells me that we have a need for seniors’ housing,” said Coun. Cunningham. Mayor Brain reiterated that it’s important to follow the processes originally set out by council and to trust the data and its analysis, which isn’t completely done yet. “Seniors’ housing is something we absolutely need. The issue is this: seniors’ housing needs someone to help subsidize, so that the rent can be cheaper for seniors, so that they can live there without having to pay over $1,000 a month. So somebody needs to come to the table with some money and ongoing money to help subsidize the cost,” said Mayor Brain. “Traditionally when you’re doing social housing or affordable housing, you have different levels of government involved. If you don’t have the right data to prove that we actually have that need [the government won’t have proof]. [The government] will say, ‘Well, prove that, because our numbers say this and this’. So the reason why we did the Go Plan and the Housing Market Surveys is to say ‘Hey, we actually have the numbers and we know that this many seniors need houses or are trying to move from their house to an affordable place ... We can’t just provide anecdotal evidence.”

CAMERON ORR / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

Andy Burky at Squirrel Park, which he created in 1996.

Squirrel Park has been a Kitimat icon for nearly 20 years By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - There are 21 memorial crosses or plaques adorning the tree that marks the unofficial “Squirrel Park” and Andy Burky has a story for each one of them. The park’s origins go back to 1996 with the first cross, Burky’s fishing partner Bill Lowes. Burky points to the others and quickly recalls memories of the others, such as Joan, who was one of a group of three women who came to Kitimat to fish for years. Burky says it has been awhile since he’s seen the other two from the former trio. From mornings fishing on the river to the sharing of volumes of rum, Burky remembers them all. He’s put up most of the 21 memorials, as well as the number of squirrel houses on the tree and others nearby. He visits the park often too, feeding the animals. It has become a popular destination for many reasons. For families it’s a place to bring kids to feed the squirrels, he said. It’s also a place where people have brought the ashes of

their loved ones, to spread at the tree’s base. It began as a memorial site, but the abundance of squirrels who lived in the area also brought in the angle of Squirrel Park, he said. “As long as I’m around I’ll keep it up,” he said. Burky, 81, had a career with Alcan before finding employment at the District of Kitimat, his way of getting outdoors more often. He still gets to the river to fish some days, but he doesn’t have the zeal for that as much anymore. He says the river has also gotten quite busy over the past few years. Even so he hasn’t given up Squirrel Park, coming frequently to check up on it or to feed the squirrels some granola bars. (The squirrels, though twitchy, seem to appreciate the gestures.) Burky’s attachment to his angler friends goes far, and he says he keeps in touch with many of the families of the people whose names are permanently places on the tree. He jokes that he sometimes checks to see if his own name has been put up on the tree when he comes by. Of course it never is, but

were it to be he’d certainly be among many of the people who he has been close with over the years. “I knew them all,” he

Duke does know basic commands, but will need someone to teach him how to walk nicely on a leash as he does tend to pull. If you are looking for a very smart, active dog, please get in touch with the BC SPCA Prince Rupert Branch!

British Columbia seeks mining agreement with Alaska By Tom Fletcher

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

ALASKA - B.C. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett is spending this week in Alaska, his second trip this year to work out a formal agreement on mine regulation between the state and the province. Bennett has meetings lined up with Alaska conservation groups, state legislators, commercial fishing representatives and Alaska Governor Bill Walker. With major mine projects proposed on both

sides of the border and continued public concern in the wake of last year’s Mount Polley tailings dam collapse near Quesnel, Bennett is hoping to have an agreement ready for Walker and Premier Christy Clark to sign later this year. Several B.C. mine projects have opened or received permits to proceed this year in northwest B.C., where salmon-bearing river systems extend across the Alaska panhandle to the Pacific Ocean. Two of those mines are just north of Stewart B.C. and Hyder, Alaska near the Unuk River, which

flows into Tongass National Forest in Alaska. Brucejack Mine is an underground project expected to proceed with construction this year. Its tailings are to be returned to the mine shaft, reducing concern about environmental impact. Near Brucejack is the KSM Mine, one of the largest copper and gold ore deposits in the world. It was given B.C. permits last year for a design that includes open pits and a pair of tunnels to carry ore 23 km away for processing. Bennett plans to fly into the Taku River region, where B.C.

has issued permits for the Tulsequah Chief mine south of Atlin. It also plans a tailings storage site to restart mining on two ore deposits that were previously mined in the 1950s. “We’re going to meet with dozens of different interests and people, do a lot of listening, but also make sure that Alaskans become a bit more aware of how much access their government has to our processes in B.C.,” Bennett said. The Alaska government participated in the approvals for KSM and others, but many state residents

aren’t aware of that, he said. Many Alaskans are aware of the Mount Polley situation, where recovery work continues a year after millions of tonnes of mine waste poured into Quesnel Lake. Testing of water and aquatic life continues and the water continues to meet Canadian drinking water standards. “It’s going to take years to have any long-term certainty on this, but so far it would seem that there hasn’t been a negative impact on aquatic organisms that we know of today, or on humans,” Bennett said.

Winther to represent Canada at Worlds Contributed

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT Just when you think they can’t step it up any higher, local game shop Good Times Games and Electronics finds a way to do it. This time the shop hosted the Canadian National Force of Will (collectible card game) Championships in Prince Rupert. Force of Will, being a relatively new game, has been seeing huge turnouts and popularity in Asia, Europe and Australia already, with the U.S. catching fire since January and Canada coming on board in July. “Originally they planned to have a Western and Eastern Canadian Championship and send two representatives to Tokyo for the World Championships” noted Good Times owner and event promoter Rob Gruber. “But with such short notice the Eastern event fell through leaving Prince Rupert as the lone site and making us the Canadian National Championship.” The event drew players from all around the region as well as Alberta, Vancouver and Victoria as a total of 66 joined the fun and competed for a chance to represent Canada at the

World Championships. “How many of us get the chance to represent our country in our lifetimes?” added Gruber. The winner is no stranger to competitive card gaming and big events either. Local card slinger Tyler Winther fought through six rounds of play as well as three rounds after cutting to a Top 8 showdown where he eventually faced his brother Kevin Winther in the finals. He will enjoy airfare and accommodations provided as he makes his way to Tokyo, Japan for the World Championships in September. His brother and family plan to join him on this exciting adventure. Tyler and Kevin have both represented Good Times and Prince Rupert at World Championships for the Kaijudo collectible card game as well. “It was an all local Top 4 at this event, which is exciting for us at Good Times,” said Gruber. “We work hard to try and bring our community premier events, and our locals appreciate that and play at a very high level always” Rounding out the Top 4 with Tyler and Kevin were Jacob Krieger in third and Rylie Miller in fourth. Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Aurora LNG Project

Open House and Invitation to Comment Aurora LNG (Proponent) is proposing to construct and operate the Aurora LNG Project (proposed Project), a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility and marine terminal for the export of LNG. The proposed Project would be located on the southeast corner of Digby Island near Prince Rupert, BC. The proposed Project would export up to 24 million tonnes per annum of LNG. The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act and is also undergoing a substituted environmental assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The Proponent must obtain an environmental assessment certificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. However, prior to submission of an application (Application) for a certificate by the Proponent, the Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia (EAO) must first approve the Application Information Requirements. The Application Information Requirements will specify the studies to be conducted and the detailed information to be provided by the Proponent in its Application. The EAO has now received draft Application Information Requirements from the Proponent and invites comments on this draft. To provide information about the Application Information Requirements, EAO invites the public to attend an Open House. The Open House is scheduled as follows: at: North Coast Meeting & Convention Centre 240 – 1st Avenue West, Prince Rupert on: Wednesday, September 23, 2015 from: 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There are 30 days for the submission of comments by the public in relation to the draft Application Information Requirements. The comment period will begin on September 1, 2015 and end on October 1, 2015. All comments received during this comment period in relation to the Application Information Requirements will be considered.

The intention of seeking public comments is to ensure that all potential effects – environmental, economic, social, heritage and health – that might result from the proposed Project are identified for consideration as part of the assessment process. At this stage of the process, the primary intent is to receive feedback about the studies or information required for a comprehensive environmental assessment. After taking public comments into account, EAO will finalize the Application Information Requirements and issue them to the Proponent. EAO accepts public comments through the following ways: ONLINE FORM

DESIGN FOR LIVING COUNTRY-STYLE SHOWN AT ITS BEST Country-style is shown at its best in this expansive family home designed for open living. The highlight of the main floor is the huge great room, distinguished by a 12foot sloping ceiling, gas fireplace with media shelves and a wealth of windows to bathe the room in natural light. The dining room is spacious enough for guests to join the family and enjoy dinner with ease – and to step out to the patio overlooking the garden. The kitchen is well designed to suit a house of this size and includes a pantry and plenty of countertop and cupboard space. A pass-through leads to the laundry room, which has its own small covered porch and access to the house – a practical way to keep foot traffic away from the living areas. Behind the laundry room is a three-piece bathroom with a bath and a shower stall. A staircase leads to an unfinished bonus room above the garage – a large, rectangular room with a sloping ceiling which would make an ideal media and games area. Port loan to ensure roof repairs

A11

28th Annual Kitimat Fish Derby

August 10 to September 6, 201

PRINCE RUPERT - That fiddler must have done less damage on the Lester Centre’s roof than originally thought. The cost of the Lester Centre of the Arts’ roof repair has decreased from the City of Prince Rupert’s original $250,000 estimate to a new figure of approximately $144,000. “The roof will be finished this year and, fortunately, the cost ended up being less than originally estimated,” said the city’s chief financial officer Corinne Bomben last week. As well, since the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) donated $125,000 towards the project from the organization’s Community Investment Fund in June at its annual public meeting to account for 50 per cent of the cost, the port’s adjusted donation will become $71,600, half of the new cost. “This is consistent with PRPA’s Community Investment Fund contributions, where successful applicants can receive up to 50 per cent of their project cost, provided they have matching funds in place for the remaining 50 per cent,” said PRPA manager of corporate communications, Michael Gurney. However, currently the City does not have the matching $71,600 to contribute to the project, so the PRPA is offering

The repair of the Lester Centre of the Arts roof will cost significantly less than first expected. an interest-free loan of another $71,600 to pay for the remainder of the roofing cost. That loan must be repaid in full to the PRPA by Aug. 1, 2016. “The City is receiving a total of $143,201.23 from the Port Authority, with half that amount as an interest-free loan since the City does not have the resources to fund the remainder of the project on their own, or any other matching funds in place,” Gurney added.

“We are in the process of applying for grants to cover the balance,” said Bomben. The roof was identified as a structure needing to be replaced in the City’s 2014 Annual Report and has been showing signs of moss growth, rusting, debris piling and drain blockage. In the Aug. 17 city council meeting, it was revealed that Eby and Sons Construction Ltd. was awarded the roof replacement contract.

A lot of development happening around.....tell me the newest street in town? My name is Bob, I have black hair.....visitors find me after climbing stairs. A white marking, I have one.....take a selfie with me to be done. In a mountain you will see.....a shape so clear I think it’s me. Who am I? A pioneer you may think antique.....my name lives on in this creek. I am the coldest of pools and my depth is deep too, how many lanes does my surface serve you? This building first used for a sport played outdoors, when did this restaurant first open its doors? Many species found in the Kitimat River, their unique life cycles hardly differ. Tell me the life cycle of a salmon please. Find a diagram at the fish hatchery. In this building there is a couch, from “55” the Curator will vouch. The designers name is in plain sight.....tell us his name for you to be right.

Over the years Spratt has established himself as a strong pro-life presence in protesting Canada’s move to legalize abortions. It has resulted in his arrest several times in the last decade for being

inside a “bubble zone” around abortion clinics. The term “bubble zone” stems from legislation passed in 1995 which bans people from protesting within 50 meters of an abortion facility. On one of the occasions, Spratt and fellow pro-life activist Cissy von Dehn were also charged with “sidewalk interference.”

TERRACE -The focus of the Skeena - Bulkley Valley federal election race is sharpening as parties choose candidates or open campaign offices throughout the riding. In Terrace, an upbeat Nathan Cullen, the NDP incumbent, opened his campaign office Aug. 19, one of three the party opened last week. That makes him the second candidate to have a storefront presence – the first was WARM Conservative Tyler Nesbitt at the end of July. Carol Ann Graham

15 October 1953 - 3 August 2015 It is with deep sorrow we announce that our beloved daughter passed away, surrounded by her family and close friends at the Kitimat General Hospital. Carol was born in Belfast, N.I. and came to Canada with her parents in 1957. She is survived by her son Sean, her brother Ron and her parents Ron and Moreen. She has gone to join her treasured daughter, Ciji, who predeceased her in 2008. Carol was an artist who loved art, nature, reading, gardening and camping, but most of all she loved her children, family and close friends. She and her children spent many happy vacations with her Uncle Robert and Aunt Hazel, cousins and numerous nieces and nephews in Osoyoos. Carol’s humour, compassion and “Fightin’ Irish” spirit will be remembered. By request, there will be no funeral, and her cremains, along with Ciji’s, will be laid to rest at a private extended family gathering at a location of her choice. We acknowledge with deep appreciation the team of family in Canada and the U.K., friends, physicians and health care professionals in Terrace, Prince George and Kitimat who were by her side every step of the way. The cards, beautiful flowers and baked goods from family, friends and neighbours are also appreciated.

“Don’t cry for me. I’ll never leave you.” Donations to the BC Cancer Agency would be appreciated.

Pitch made to set up male and female soccer leagues By Jackie Lieuwen

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - A northwest soccer enthusiast wants to start a professional development soccer league in the area. Lawrence Shanoss, from Gitsegukla and now living in Terrace, wants 10 adult men’s and 10 women’s soccer teams from Prince Rupert to Smithers to be part of the new league. The league would be a northern division of the Pacific Coast Soccer League, an outdoor adult league based in southern B.C. that develops players for provincial, national and major league soccer teams.

“This is my dream. I’ve always been a sports enthusiast,” Shanoss said. “I just love the young people, and that’s who I am doing this for... we have so much talent in this region.” Shanoss wants to meet this September with community leaders and soccer-program heads in the region, and then kick off the league in April 2016. League president David Collard says the league is eager to expand into the north, but needs teams to officially apply by December in order to move forward. “We are in a position to move really quickly once we have this commitment from the northern region,” Collard said.

He says the league needs a minimum of six committed men’s and six women’s teams of players between the ages of 18 and 23 in order to launch a northern division. Blaine Kluss, director of the Terrace Youth Soccer Association (TYSA), says starting this up is “a brilliant idea.” There are no highly competitive leagues like it and the only adult soccer league is moderately competitive, he said. Kluss said he has no doubt there would be enough players for a Terrace team. “Terrace has enough soccer players in that age range to put a competitive team together,” he said. Still, it might be difficult to as-

semble six men’s and six women’s teams in the north by December simply because communities are small, he added. “It is all about leadership. You need to have strong individuals in each community to put those teams together.” Danu Craig, the Haisla Nation’s recreation coordinator and a Terrace resident, says a northern division of the southern soccer league would give TYSA players a chance to further develop their skills. “I feel there is definitely enough men to put a team together for this league... I’d play for it. My friends would,” Craig said, adding that soccer has been growing in popularity here. If organized, northern division

teams would play 18 games from April to August. Then the top three men’s and women’s teams would travel south to play top southern teams for respective league cups. Shanoss says that long-term, he hopes to use the league as a platform to apply for grants for improved playing fields in the region. His ultimate goal is to raise enough money to build a 2,600seat soccer stadium in Terrace. Collard said the Pacific Coast Soccer League would help promote the sport if a northern division is launched. “It would be wonderful for that region,” he said.

Club ready to launch on all four wheels By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - The Northwest RC Club is a reality. A club dedicated to remotecontrolled vehicles has taken off, on an effort largely based on the work of Kitimatian Jeremy Dewalt. Dewalt earned Kitimat fame in February this year when he recorded the effects of Kitimat’s huge snowfall using his quadcopter. (Which he notes he has recently sold to make way for a new model.) What the club needs now though is public spaces. Up to now they’ve been us-

ing a member’s backyard, but since it’s private property there are scheduling and liability challenges. Dewalt said that will change soon though as the club will open up a public space at the Thornhill community grounds soon. They recently given permission to use some space there, where they will put up signs, posts, and of course a race track. They are also pushing to get space in Kitimat too. What Dewalt is looking to do is redevelop an RC track at the former BMX track behind KVI and near the golf club. He said he’s not worried

about getting support for the idea to use that site (he already has some), but just has to clear the hurdles related to landownership: it’s currently shared by the District of Kitimat and the school district, he says. The club recently began taking paid memberships as a way to kickstart their finances, and Dewalt said there are already 20 paying members. As well there are five people on the club executive. By the long weekend their Thornhill track should be ready to go. He said up to three tracks could be built once they figure out if they can work on the BMX track in Kitimat. He describes the RC ‘life-

style’ as very family oriented, and he gets his own kids involved as often as he can. “It’s all about the family,” he said. That plays out in the statistics too. He said about half of the RC community is under 17-years-old. He’s looking to grow the club to, for instance hosting intra-club events with others in the province. Dewalt says he has about 14 working vehicles in his fleet, with another dozen or so ‘projects’, or one-day to be working vehicles. You can learn more about the club through social media at North West R/C Club.

PRINCE RUPERT - The men’s Seniors’ Jubilee title may not be returning to Prince Rupert, but the women’s trophy will be staying within city borders. Rose Holkestad emerged as the tournament victor in the ladies’ division of the Vic Marion Seniors’ Open at the Prince Rupert Golf Club earlier in August – her third straight Vic Marion title. The Prince Rupert golfer, who just this year has won the His and Hers Tournament with Brian Holkestad as well as the Ladies Jubilee, shot an overall low gross 36-hole total of 179 to win the championship. Brian, who won the men’s Vic Marion title two years ago, didn’t take part in the men’s division, but Gene Kerbrat from Kitimat won the men’s title with an overall low gross of 160. “It’s not my best score I’ve ever shot there. I had a couple lower scores in the jubilees, but it went well. There was some good competition,” said Kerbrat. “I was more consistent on the back nine [holes] ... I seem to have better luck on the back. I’ve been in a few tournaments [at the Prince Rupert course] the last

three years, so I’m pretty familiar with the course.” Kerbrat shot a 36hole low gross total of 160 to win the title, and along with it, a nice picture with a frame. “I kind of like my prize. It’s a picture on top of the 18th hole there – the view from the 18th hole. I was playing the first round on Saturday and I said, ‘Boy, this is a really nice view’ – you know, when you’re sitting up there and looking down — and I ended up winning a picture of that exact view,” said Kerbrat. “It was my first win – I’m 57 years old and I finally won a tournament!” The overall low net winner for the men was Don Movold, who shot a net total of 143 and the ladies’ overall low net winner was Jocelyn Galloway, who carded a net total of 147. “They did a pretty good job of getting the course playable without a greenskeeper. They haven’t had a greenskeeper all year,” said Kerbrat, who regularly plays in the Terrace and Kitimat tourneys as well as Rupert events. “Every time I’ve played there it hasn’t rained ever ... I enjoy playing in Rupert – they’re a good bunch of people and I’m going to be coming for the next few years,” he said.
