EDUCATION
TWU in court this week Another legal battle began over TWU’s law school. MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
The Law Society of B.C.’s decision not to accredit a Christian law school in Langley should be overturned, a judge heard Monday. At issue is Trinity Western University’s “community covenant,” a document which students and staffers sign, and which prohibits sex other than between a married man and a woman. Last year lawyers in B.C. voted in a referendum to not allow TWU law school grads to pass the bar. The benchers who run the law society faced “significant political pressure” from within to ratify that vote and overturn their previous decision to accredit the school, said lawyer for TWU Kevin Boonstra. Boonstra emphasized that TWU is private, voluntary, and explicitly religious. He said that while the law society is bound by
the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, TWU is not. Boonstra said the covenant is an important method of strengthening commitment for those in the evangelical community. He pointed to other provisions within the covenant that ban harassment, lying, cheating, stealing and drunkenness. “It should be understood in context as part of a overall set of religious, Christian, evangelical principles,” Boonstra said. Hinkstra asked if the covenant requires people to report violations of its rules by others. Boonstra said that is not in the covenant, but may be in the student handbook. TWU’s lawyer also argued that creating a new Christian, evangelical law school would not reduce opportunities for people to get a legal education. It would free up spaces in other institutions. The law society argued the covenant is discriminatory and runs contrary to equality rights of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning) people set out in the charter. The code “seriously
undermines the integrity and the foundation of the administration of justice,” it said. “As a condition of attending TWU’s proposed law school, the covenant is clearly discriminatory and contrary to the equality rights of LGBTQ people. It also discriminates on other protected grounds of marital status, gender and sex, and religion,” said the reply. That would both limit access to the law school and send the message that the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ people and others were not deserving of protection in the legal system. Trinity Western has been fighting multiple court battles as it tries to get its long-planned law school up and running. It recently won a court battle in Nova Scotia, but lost in Ontario where the Law Society of Upper Canada decided not to accept TWU lawyers. The government of B.C., which had originally given approval to create the new institution, had withdrawn that, pending the outcome of the ongoing legal matters. - With files from the Vancouver Sun. > More at langleyadvance.com

Quiet drive best
Name: Eric Taylor Resides in: Langley What is your current ride? 1961 Corvair Rampside, 1963 Pontiac Lemans, 1971 Triumph GT6, 1939 Chev COE project First car? ’68 Rebel Wagon What makes you reach for the swear jar? Ignorance, stupidity and lack of respect for others. What’s your perfect drive? Any of my old cars with my Lovely First Wife in the passenger seat, going somewhere at a leisurely pace. If money was no object, what car would be in your garage tomorrow? 1965 ISO Rivolta. Italian engineering and design, Chevy drivetrain. Need for speed or quiet country roads? Why? Without question, backroads are for me. I much prefer to see and enjoy the areas I am travelling through rather than to just get through them. That’s why my cars/trucks have windows. Some of the best parts of a road trip are the stops in some way off the beaten track gas station or store where a whole group of people stops to talk about ‘that weird truck you’re driving.’ My most powerful car has 250HP. Are you a regular at Langley Good Times Cruise-In, and why or why not? Of course I am! I have been attending it since I discovered it in 2000. I had bought my first classic car in 1999 and I had not been to a car show before. The Cruise-In was my first ever. I have attended it annually and have volunteered at it for quite a few years. Oddest question you’ve been asked at car shows? Did they make this truck like this, or did you custom build it? > Read more at langleyadvance.com.

rene Dawson never wins anything, or so the Langley City woman will tell you. That is until recently, when her luck apparently changed. The faithful Langley Advance reader won a five-night cruise to Alaska next May, complete with an oceanview stateroom, courtesy of Cruiseship Centres. And Dawson won just for picking her favourite local businesses in the 2015 Best of the Best Awards program. For the past 18 years now, the Advance has been asking its readers and members of the Langley community to vote for the best businesses in town. And while this newspaper has been a favourite of Dawson’s for more than 30 years, participating in the competition was new. She and a long-time girlfriend made an pact going in. They’d each enter, and if by chance either won, they’d take the other on the trip. “It just seemed like fun… something different to do,” Dawson said of Best of the Best. “This is a wonderful surprise,” she added of the win, excited to return to Alaska for a second time. She travelled there a few years ago with her daughter, and was particularly in awe of the country’s beauty. > See Best of the Best section in today’s paper

Choco thief sought MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
Langley RCMP are looking for a thief who swiped $50 in chocolate from a gas station. The man allegedly stole from the Esso in the 6000 block of Glover Road Aug. 15, said Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Largy. On Aug. 13, two women were videotaped in the Pennington’s store on the Langley Bypass. They allegedly rolled up $300 worth of clothing and concealed it in a handbag. In Aug. 3, a GT Traffic 4.0 touring
bicycle was stolen from a garage in Walnut Grove, said Largy. The black bike has thin white-wall tires. A dark green ATV (Suzuki four-wheel automatic with a winch) was stolen from an Aldergrove property on Aug. 16. Two bikes were found at the Brookswood Dog Park Aug. 17. Another was found in a wooded area behind a skate park Aug. 20, and appears to be highend, Largy said. Anyone with information, call the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200.

The Yorkshiremen invade politics
T
here’s a magnificent comedy sketch, most famously done by the Monty Python’s Flying Circus crew, called the Four Yorkshiremen. If you haven’t seen it, it’s four wealthy businessmen, sitting around, reminiscing about how they came from terrible poverty and miserable childhoods. Each one-ups the others by giving more and more outlandish details. Key exchange: “There were a 150 of us, living in a shoebox in the middle of the road!” “Cardboard box?” “Aye!” “You were lucky!” I think about this sketch a lot while I’m watching political coverage lately. The Four Yorkshiremen sketch is a form of class posturing. All of them are obviously wealthy and massively successful. But they try to emphasize how they came from nothing. That’s a rhetorical tactic that almost everyone employs at one time or another. Ultimately, we all come from nothing, or our ancestors did. Go back 200 years and about 90 per cent of people were farmers. Everyone’s ancestors had dirt under their fingernails, unless your name is Windsor, née Saxe-Coburg Gotha. I’ve seen these up-from-nothing rhetorical postures used in high-level polit-
ical debate, and in random internet arguments about science fiction novels. Seriously, this kind of thing is everywhere. The problem is that politicians frequently try to use a humble, or at least average, background as part of their narrative. Thomas Mulcair has been emphasizing his middle-class upbringing, and I fully expect Stephen Harper to do MATTHEW that too – after all, Justin Trudeau is the only candidate in the race who comes from money. Emphasizing that you weren’t born with a silver spoon firmly planted in your mouth is a good tactic. For all that we believe in bettering ourselves economically, we’re often suspicious of the rich, especially those with inherited wealth. After all, if they’ve never had to work hard or go without, how will they understand those of us who have? But a disproportionate number of our politicians and business leaders come from money. Even if they increased their family wealth, like Donald Trump or Conrad Black, they didn’t exactly start out shoeless, begging for nickels in the gutter. They began from a position of relative wealth and privilege, and used it as a springboard to something great-

urn on your TV and change it to a news channel, open a paper, or check the internet. It’s a policy blizzard out there. In fact, we’d have trouble keeping up if we were covering nothing but announcements from the three major political parties. While the United States is suffering through a bizarre Republican primary that is light on issues and heavy on Trump, Canada is a policy wonk’s dream. Just in the past week or so, we’ve seen the major party leaders make promises on senate reform, old age security, northern defense, business taxes, even home renovation tax credits. You could criticize some of these announcements. Many of them are on the small scale side of things. We’ve called for a debate on big issues – things like global warming, but we could as easily have said health care or the role of Canada’s military, post-secondary education, veterans and the future of our economy. So far, we haven’t seen too much discussion of those big issues. But the party leaders have a long road ahead of them, and they have to save some ammunition for September and October, when everyone’s back from summer getaways and can really get down to paying attention to the news again. Right now, we’re actually pleased that, at the very least, there are issues on the table. Not all of these issues are minor, either – when Harper talks about expanding the Junior Canadian Rangers, or Mulcair wants to return Old Age Security to 65 from 67 years, those are both indications of significant priorities for their potential governments. We’re in the middle of a long, long campaign. The leaders could have been excused for stretching things out, going to rallies, and not saying much. Instead, we’ve actually seen a lot of talk about how things would go under Trudeau, Harper, and Mulcair. It may be a little piecemeal right now, but it could be worse. We could be talking about Donald Trump. – M.C.
er. (In both those cases, “greater” might be the wrong word.) Some people can’t claim a middle class background, no matter how hard they try. This leads us to the “regular guy” persona, as adopted by many, many American goodold-boy type politicians, and by Rob Ford here in Canada. This changes the argument from economic (“I underCLAXTON stand your issues because they are mine”) to purely cultural (“I like hockey! You like hockey? Vote for me!”). Although the “regular guy” argument is more obviously false, I’m suspicious of both. Just because you were born poor or middle class doesn’t mean you still hold those values. It’s possible to take almost any two individuals, put them through similar circumstances, and to have them come out with vastly different political ideals. It’s harder, but we have to interrogate politicians not just on where they come from, but on the lessons they learned. It’s entirely possible that, like the four Yorkshiremen, they may have become a little bit detached from reality in the years since their humble beginnings. Global warming ‘biggest hoax ever perpetrated on mankind’ Dear Editor RE: Langley Advance, Aug 13, OUR VIEW, Too hot to not have a real debate. I just can’t let Matthew Claxton go unchallenged on his global warming alarmist fears and make-believe solutions. It’s truly amazing that some people are willing to kill our economy and trash our jobs for some unproven hypothesis that the temperature may rise or fall half a degree in 100 years. Who needs an economy? What jobs? Sure global warming exists… as a contrived theory based only on hundreds of never-ending constantly changing computer models. Garbage in, garbage out. Thousands of paid-for pseudo scientists couldn’t survive if they didn’t produce doomsday alarmist reports. Global warming is now a $1.5 trillion global industry, the biggest hoax ever perpetrated
on mankind. To put this into perspective, Exxon Mobile, the largest American oil company with annual revenues of approx. $365 billion, is only one quarter the size of the Big Green Climate Change Industry. (http://tinyurl. com/ofwn694) Opportunistic on the current heat wave, Claxton claims ‘anecdotal evidence’ (no proof emotions). The thing is when it is not raining here, it is raining somewhere else in the world. When we get a dry summer, someone else gets a wet one, etc. His solutions (ironically after the big defeated plebiscite) include spending more tax dollars on transit, and more tax incentives which are taxpayer subsidies. Policies that involve government (taxpayer) subsidies like electric cars and solar or wind grants are a cost/benefit negative drain on our economy, resulting
in higher taxes, higher costs, lower quality of life, etc. They tried Claxton’s wind/ solar solutions in Europe which disastrously failed, resulting in a new class of energy poverty. Some 20,000-plus are dying every winter in Britain alone because they can’t afford to pay their heating bills. They are now having to choose between food or heat. (http://tinyurl.com/przgyk6) We have been Carbon Tax and (Carbon Trust Cap/Trade) ripped off in B.C. for well over $1 billion which solved nothing as carbon emissions have increased. Such thinking resembles the same NDP and Liberal leftist/ socialists program that are committed to shut down pipelines and the Alberta oil sands. Life is hard enough without dreaming up more ways to be victim scammed by Al Gore and complicit followers. Roland Seguin, Langley

Campaign promises don’t hold water Dear Editor, The campaign trail littered with empty ‘water bottles’. When there’s a drought, people understand the long-term implications but still need to be prodded into cutting back on their water consumption.
Most people do it willingly and a few cheat. But none of us expect the restrictions to be lifted until the reservoirs are once again filled to a prudent level. Where does this collective common sense go when there’s an election? Canada is tee-
tering on the edge of a recession and the global economy is facing what could be called an economic drought. Our politicians, even the arrogant ones who preach fiscal restraint and rant against government handouts, are tossing around expen-
Abortions waste taxpayers’ money Dear Editor, All abortions in Canada are funded by we, the taxpayers, against our will, through provincial health care systems. Almost all abortions are done for convenience, therefore it’s not
medically necessary. Abortion is an economic drain, costing much more than just the procedure. Abortion is murder, and it shouldn’t have to be funded with our hard earned money. Dean Clark, Langley
sive election promises as if they are empty water bottles and then claiming only their party has the magic necessary to create the rain to fill them. Some voters, who hope to get something for nothing, flock to the party promising the biggest bottles. We could blame the politicians for their charlatan-like behaviour; however, they are merely pandering to the wants, wishes and whims of the voters. Apparently many of us hate the thought of having to live within our means. Lloyd Atkins, Vernon

ue the Imperial March orchestral music and the resonance of Darth Vader’s tinny, laboured breathing. James Strachan and Matthew Purdy have embraced the dark side. Well, sort of. The pals are behind a mammoth model of a Death Star. Purdy, owner of Toy Traders, has the model on display in the Star Wars section of his sweeping, warehouse-sized toys and collectibles store. “Its a huge draw for the store. When we moved to a store three times the size [of the original], I knew we needed a Death Star that was three times the size,” said Purdy, who added, “We’re fanatical Star Wars fans, both of us.” Strachan, a 41-yearold married father of two, ages seven and one, built the model, complete with intricate details such as two platforms including a landing bay, and roughly 170 action figures. “I gotta tell you, those platforms in there were not easy to mount, because they are also

attached to the wall on a 45 [degree] angle,” Strachan said. So why do it? The reasoning is simple. Strachan loves everything about the space saga and wanted to share his passion with others. He figures he’s seen Star Wars 150 times and its sequel, the Empire Strikes Back on more than 200 occasions. “I’m an enormous fan of Star Wars,” he said. “I actually have my own Star Wars man cave. with similar aspirations because “there were too many people with parents who would take care of them until they were in their 30s, so I had to go get a day job.” Enter Purdy, who gave Strachan an outlet to explore his inner artist, and share his devotion to Star Wars. “He [Purdy] paid me something but mostly I did it because he asked me to, and he knew that I wanted to be part of the displays around here,” Strachan shared. “Had it not been Matthew I would not have built this thing.” The Death Star is the largest of the Star Wars models Strachan has built for display at Toy Traders, including a life-sized R5-D4 droid, an Imperial probe, interrogation droid, mouse droid, and a BB-8, a droid from the upcoming new Star Wars movie. Strachan enjoys the “awe on their faces” when customers come into the toy store. “Am I a fan of the dark side?” he said. “I collect more dark side characters but I had a spiritual epiphany watching Yoda when I was younger, when he transfers to the other side. For a lot of young people, that’s their spiritual view; once your body leaves here, you go to this other place and your spirit is still alive.”

Dear Anne,
We have many birds visiting as we have a feeder. The swallows return each year to the nesting boxes. Up until two years ago we had a white plastic birdbath which they used frequently. We then bought a nice, modern one (not concrete) and since then not one bird has used it. We placed a large flat stone in it, but it was of no help. We are hoping you, or one of your readers can come up with a suggestion about what we can do.” Birds seem to prefer shallow depths and rough surfaces in their birdbath. You could try putting some grit, small stones, or sand. There are birdbaths that have one or two ornaments or even figures of saints or angels fastened to the birdbath or nearby. Birds are always alert for rivals to attack them or humans to avoid and would stay away. Is the birdbath a colour that wouldn’t occur in any pool or stream in nature? Or a shape that looks artificial. One reason concrete birdbaths are often a bird favourite is that concrete looks similar to the rock birds see on the edges of woodland streams. Have been any changes to vegetation around your birdbath?

If you’ve cleared away shrubbery or done heavy pruning there, maybe the location is too open? Birds are always on the watch for predators and feel safest when there’s are trees or shrubs. Is there a possibility that fewer birds than in the past visit your yard even though a good many still remain? During the last two years, we see far fewer birds in the whole neighbourhood. Dear Anne,

After starting Bell #26 my readings are generally well below 120/80. Dona A. Anderson, 76, Sooke, BC < My blood pressure was 157/90 and I had side effects from prescription drugs. I bought a monitor. After 6 months on Bell #26 I was down to 120/80. Toni L. McCuistion, 52, Elizabethtown, PA < Blood pressure went from 170/110 down to 110/70. Was on three medications that didn’t help. Within a month on Bell#26 my BP dropped to 110/70. I thought I didn’t need it anymore and the BP went up to 170/110 again. I will now stay on Bell. I am surprised about its effectiveness without side effects. Bell exceeds my expectations. Patrick McManus, 52, Edmonton, AB < At work my driver’s medical test was too high at 170/100. Horse show art show and sale benefits hospice Remembering Betty, an art show was truly memorable for organizers. TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@langleyadvance.com
A Langley artist’s wife was remembered through fine art and generosity last weekend at Thunderbird Show Park. Stunning was the best way to describe the quality of artwork on display during the West Fine Art Show that ran Aug. 20 to 23 at Thunderbird Show Park. The sixth annual show, called Remembering Betty, was a tribute to founder Murray Phillips’ wife, who passed away in 2013. This was the third show in partnership

arlier this month, I offered justification to eat a DQ Blizzard and a White Spot Pirate Pak, but today I’m giving you reason to chow down on a Teen Burger. Today (Thursday), the A&W restaurants in Langley (Willowbrook, Walnut Grove, Murrayville, and Aldergrove) are hosting the seventh annual Cruisin’ to End MS. A dollar from each of the Teen Burgers sold will go to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. And, the best part is that most restaurants across the country that can, ROXANNE HOOPER will also host a car show in connection with the fundraiser. So guests can check out some awesome classic and hot rod cars, enjoy some live entertainment, play some games, and, of course, eat. For more: cruisintoendms.ca. The show, held in conjunction with Thunderbird’s Summer Fort Festival, was a phenomenal success and saw more than $50,000 in art sales throughout the weekend, 25 per cent of which (equalling more than $12,000) benefiting the society. Todd-Booth said the society is thankful for the partnership with the West Fine Art Society, the event sponsors such as Annabel Young of Homelife Benchmark Realty in Walnut Grove, volunteers, and who she described as the “amazing group” of Western Canadian artists who participate in the show annually to help raise important funds and awareness to assist the Langley Hospice Society. Fundraisers such as this, Todd-Booth noted, help the society ensure that important palliative and bereavement care and support programs and services continue “in our community, for our community.”

HEALTH
Back to school prep includes vaccination issues Put vaccinations on the to-do list this back-to-school season. The back-to-school season is a great time to review family vaccinations. Fraser Health is recommending families check to see if anyone needs to schedule an appointment. Immunizations are one of the most effective preventative med-
ical interventions available to protect children against serious vaccine-preventable diseases. However, children are not considered fully protected against vaccine preventable diseases until they have completed the recommended immunizations. In Langley only 64 per cent of children are fully vaccinated. Fewer than two-thirds of all seven-year-olds in the Fraser Health region have up-to-date vaccinations, according to immunization data for 2013-14.
Just 62 per cent of seven-yearolds in the region, which extends from Burnaby to Hope, have had all their vaccinations. This falls far short of the threshold for herd immunity, the term used when enough people in a community are immunized against a disease so that it has no opportunity to spread. This typically requires an 80 per cent or higher vaccination rate, depending on the disease, said Dr. Victoria Lee, chief medical health officer for Fraser Health. For highly
contagious diseases such as measles, 90 per cent or higher immunization is needed. Children between four and six years old should have up-to-date booster shots to protect against polio, tetanus, diphtheria, chicken pox and whooping cough. Subsequent vaccinations are also received in Grades 6 and 9 at school, with periodic immunizations also recommended throughout adulthood. To make an immunization appointment, call a family phys-
ician or local Public Health Unit. Fraser Health’s public health teams are supporting parents in keeping up with their child’s immunization schedule, offering immunizations clinics during the evenings and on weekends. Contact a local Public Health Unit for drop-in clinic times. For more information on vaccinations and where to get children immunized, visit http:// www.fraserhealth.ca. – With files from the Vancouver Sun

or the third year, Langley’s David Nelson will be riding to conquer cancer. And during this weekend’s ride, he’ll be missing someone he loves very much. His brother Eric, the inspiration behind Team Pancho, died from colon cancer on April 7. A Vancouver resident, Eric left behind a wife and two young children. He was 46. It was in support of his brother, two years his senior, that David got involved in B.C.’s Ride to Conquer Cancer in 2013. “It was great riding with him,” David said, adding that

As a member of Team Pancho, Langley’s David Nelson is cycling from Cloverdale to Seattle this weekend (Aug. 29 and 30) as part of the Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation. Team Pancho is riding in memory of David’s brother Eric, who died from colon cancer on April 7 of this year. the disease greatly affected Eric’s stamina last year. “He did fine. He normally, pre-cancer, would have been a tough-asnails sort of guy but he had to be way more careful, to pace himself, but he got through it all right.”

n avid cyclist David is not, but last year and the year before he trained with, and rode alongside, Eric for the annual journey from Cloverdale to Seattle. “I started riding for the Ride to Conquer Cancer,” David said.
Funds raised from the Aug. 29 and 30 Ride, presented by Silver Wheaton, benefits the BC Cancer Foundation. The B.C. Ride has raised more than $59 million, to date. The foundation’s mission to help reduce the incidence of cancer, reduce the mortality rate of cancer, and improve the quality of life of people living with cancer. Team Pancho – started by Eric’s friend Todd Foxcroft and made up of his close friends and colleagues – is gearing up to take part in the trek that will cover roughly 220 kilometres this Saturday and Sunday. Eric’s memory lives on through Team Pancho, “Pancho” being the nickname given to Eric, who showed up to a few parties wearing a Mexican poncho and “slinging tequila,” David related. David misses his brother and hopes to help others who are living with cancer. “I saw what cancer did to Eric and there are other people on the team who have loved ones who suffer from cancer,” he said. continued on page A20

This equipment has predetermined routes, or an assigned area to follow. Pulling equipment away for a specific request lengthens the time it takes to fully complete all the rural boulevards and ditches. If you have a request for mowing or brush whacking, we ask for your patience as we try to fit the work schedule in as efficiently as possible. We thank you for your understanding as we operate under these requirements. Engineering Division 604.532.7300 opsinfo@tol.ca

The Langley Rams used a bit of razzle-dazzle in their 42-9 win over the Westshore Rebels at McLeod Stadium on Saturday. One of their five touchdowns on the day was a 71-yard pass from receiver Bobby Pospischil to running back Nathan Lund on a trick play. With the win, Langley sits tied with the Kamloops Broncos and V.I. (Nanaimo) Raiders for second in the B.C. Football Conference, all with 3-2 marks. The Rebels from Victoria fell to 1-4. The big test for the Rams comes Saturday, Aug. 29 when they host the undefeated, 5-0 Okanagan Sun in a rematch of last year’s Cullen Cup title game. Opening kickoff at McLeod Stadium is 7 p.m. On Saturday, former SFU Clan receiver Pospischil starred for the Rams, catching three passes for 159 yards and a major, to go with his touchdown toss to Lund in which he broke several tackles before throwing the ball downfield. Quarterback Dylan Tucker, Lund, and Jacob Patko all

FnF bronzed Fort Langley Canoe Club’s Fast and Furious Lite Dragonboat Team recently returned from the PanAm Club Crew Championship at the Welland International Flatwater Centre in Ontario, with a racing experience that brought home big smiles and medals. PanAmCC, an international Small Boat Championship (small boat equals 10 paddlers, one steersperson and
one drummer, and had crews paddling in the latest model 10-man BUK’s). “These highly responsive and tippy boats challenged the FnF Lite team who had never paddled in that boat before,” reported FnF Lite team captain Carolyn Jeffreys. Despite the steep learning curve, FnF Lite rose to the occasion for each of their seven races (3x500m, 3x200m and a 2000m race). Steersperson Alison Goertzen and drummer Barb Ydenberg worked in tandem with the strokes to line the boat up for some challenging cross wind starts. Competing in the Senior Women’s B division (50-plus), FnF placed on the podium three times, achieving a bronze medal for each of the three distances. The hat trick medal winning FnF Lit team includes: Shar Brunje, Mare Cox, Alison Goertzen, Sue Hillier, Carolyn Jeffreys, Linda Li, Lynda Matilda, Linda Meyers, Audrey Milne, Meg Puffer, Ingrid Rennie, Maureen Spencer, Allie Wilkins, Barb Ydenberg, Ben Lee and John Spencer. > More at langleyadvance.com, search for ‘Fast and Furious Lite’

The Rams scored 28 points in the second quarter and tacked on 14 in the third quarter to pull away. The Rebels actually led 1-0 after the first quarter and held the Rams pointless in the final stanza while scoring the only point of the quarter. Also scoring a major for the Rams was Dallas Yassinsky who hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Tucker.

It’s an accomplishment to get it done.” The ride starts from the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, with the opening ceremony kicking off at 7 a.m Saturday. After an overnight stay in Mt. A
community-wide jury has voted and the Langley Advance is proud to announce winners of the 2015 Best of the Best Awards. It’s a program steeped in history and tradition that has been honouring Langley’s very best businesses and entrepreneurs for nearly two decades. The annual Langley Advance Best of the Best program provides an opportunity for the community to select local companies that consistently offer quality products and/or outstanding service to its customers. n integral part of this program’s success is the readers who take the time each year to cast their votes and share their views on which local businesses consistently go above and beyond, explained Langley Advance publisher Lisa Farquharson. They’re voting, because they’re impressed and appreciative, the new leader of the Advance team elaborated. his year alone, there were thousands of online and newspaper ballots cast, making this the biggest year ever for the program. Best of the Best grows in popularity every year, and while there are always first-time award winners, there are also many well-established Langley businesses chosen year after year. Some of those businesses win in more than one of the 120 categories on the ballot. Home Depot and Clipper

Langley Advance publisher Lisa Farquharson (second from the right) and sales team Bobbi Hill, Ramona Wildeman, Cheri Gray, Peggy O’Brien, Brenda Coulbourn, and Amber van den Hoven are ready to present with the 2015 Best of the Best Awards to the businesses chosen by readers. Street Scrapbook Company, for instance, led the list of multiple-category winners this year, finishing first in three or more award categories. Several businesses including, Toy Traders, Staples, Budget Brake & Muffler, Best Buy, and Nature’s Fare, were winners in two categories. arquharson was so encouraged by the continued and growing interest in the awards program, and the enthusiasm it creates within the community, that she said she’s looking foward to congratulate

all the winners in person. Award recipients in each categories have been invited to a special reception tonight, where they will be honoured and presented with a plaque that can hang prominently in their business to inform customers of their high-degree of sales excellence and service. “Local businesses are the centre of our community and it’s a pleasure to see so many businesses honoured for their outstanding products and services. Congratulations to all of you!” she said.
Best of the Best is democracy in action – the ballots for all the categories are counted and the winners in each category are declared. eaders are the judges. And once again Advance readers have demonstrated their devotion to choosing the best of best based on their own experiences. “Thank you to so many of our readers for taking the time to vote for your favourites,” Farquharson said. This marks the 18th year that the Advance has brought the

Best of the Best to the community, she added. “As a long-time resident of Langley I’ve always been excited to read this fabulous section every year! Now, as a new member of the Advance team, I couldn’t be more proud to be connected to such a longstanding tradition.” f you’ve never taken part in the Best of the Best before, keep your eyes peeled next spring for the 19th annual contest, and join the tradition of helping choose the next set of Langley’s very BEST!
