Drought conditions across the province have impacted farmers and ranchers in the South Cariboo who are now scrambling for hay with skyrocketing prices. While the province-wide drought is at its worst in the south-west and on Vancouver

Island, low rivers and streams and little precipitation have led to poor crop harvests across the Cariboo-Chilcotin. Locally, 100 Mile Ranch manager Greg Messner says he is fielding 20 to 50 calls every day from ranchers looking for hay, not just from the area, but also from more distant parts of British Columbia and Alberta.

On Aug. 28, the last two round bales rolled off the ranch on a customer’s truck, he adds. While the large, historic local ranch has irrigation, this season’s lack of surface water has rendered that equipment useless, Messner notes. “For us, even though we have several water licences, it just didn’t make a differ-

ence ... we are in a Category 3 Drought Level right now [in the Cariboo]. “We’ve got four dams on the ranch, seven water licences, and there isn’t water in any of those creeks and all the dams are dry.” Messner says the ranch’s water licence on Little Bridge Creek normally brings water from Exeter Lake – after the

dam boards are removed – downstream to its hay field across from Central GM. This summer, it takes a full 24 hours for water to flow from just one kilometre away, and the dry stream banks absorb most of it, he explains. “We need a flow rate of upwards of 300 gallons a Continued on A4

Assault at Women’s Centre on Aug. 27 Ken Alexander Free Press

Around 2:40 p.m. on Aug. 27, local RCMP members responded to a call about an assault at the 100 Mile House & District Women’s Centre. Women’s Centre executive director Sonja Ramsay says she was talking on the phone in her office when a staff

member knocked on her door and told her to phone 9-1-1. Noting there were 10 women in the office, Ramsay says a man, who was known to staff and had been in the office before, appeared to be agitated and he was causing a commotion. When he was asked to leave, the assailant threw the employee to the floor and then a client intervened, she

says, adding the employee jumped to her feet and pushed the assailant out of the office and locked the door. Ramsay notes the man pounded on the door and wanted to get back in; he went away, returned and pounded on the door again before leaving for good. 100 Mile House RCMP Cpl. Brian Lamb says the suspect had left the

building before police arrived and he was later found in the area. He was apprehended and arrested for assault. “The assault wasn’t directed at any one person; it wasn’t targeted. A stalwart group of seven people, who have been walking across Western Canada since July 18, marched and rode into 100 Mile House on Aug. 26 with sore and bandaged feet, stiff backs, and crutches. Their noble effort is to raise awareness of the multitudes of missing and murdered people in Canada. Walk for All Missing and Murdered organizer Brenda Osborne said they began their arduous journey in Norway House Cree Nation, Manitoba with eight people (one later had to return home) and two vans. The walkers are alternating every kilometre, and had traversed about 3,000 km upon reaching 100 Mile House, with many side trips to communities along the way. They are headed for the notorious Highway of Tears (Highway 16) heading west from Prince George, where numerous women have gone missing or been murdered during the past 26 years. Despite their fatigue, aching muscles, and fitful nights on camp bedrolls, these people are adamant they won’t stop walking until they reach their destination of Prince Rupert. Brenda will never give up her quest for change and

justice, either, she said, adding this is also for the future safety of her nine children (five of them under age 18). The group welcomes and appreciates anyone joining them, even briefly, to show support and also to give the walkers a break, she noted. Brenda explained she started walking seven years ago after her daughter, Claudette Osborne, went missing in Winnipeg on July 25, 2008 at age 21. Claudette has never been found. The grieving mother said she is very disappointed with the lack of results in

the investigation. Brenda added she is also angered that police never contacted her when her daughter disappeared; she learned about it on the television newscast. Brenda’s story is both long and heartbreaking. Her earliest recollection of trouble in her family was when she was just seven years old and her cousin, Helen Betty Osborne, was murdered. She noted her aunt, Justine Osborne, began walking in the 1970s when Helen Betty’s four killers were sentenced. Brenda said about a year later when she was eight years old she began to suffer sexual and physical abuse from family members, some of them affected by their incarceration at a residential school. This abuse went on for a decade, until she was old enough and strong enough to fight back, including laying formal charges against a cousin, Brenda explained. The brave woman noted she has also lost other family members to violence. “My uncle was shot, and the [convicted] woman only had a year’s probation. And, my cousin’s daughter, we only found parts of her body.” Brenda added another cousin was killed in Winnipeg, and the person convicted of the crime only got two years of jail time.

“With all that is going on, there is no justice anywhere.” Brenda said her sore back, ribs and feet (plastered with bandages) will heal, but her determination won’t falter as she and her comrades pursue greater awareness of the changes they know are badly needed. “Nothing is going to change until people start to fight for what they believe in, and against what is wrong. Don’t let people push you around like they did in residential school.” She also organizes other awareness walks and activities for families of victims, such as ground searches and dragging the Winnipeg River to look for bodies. The list of neglect, abuse, racism and other significant consequences still suffered by aboriginals from the very young to the Elders is long and very sad, but what she most strongly pointed to is Canada’s justice system. “Somebody who takes a life should go to jail for life.” Brenda stressed the walk is not only for the many missing and murdered aboriginal women, but all the women, men, children and families in Canada that have suffered, or are still suffering, in different ways. Many folks in 100 Mile House reached out to the walkers, and some local leaders welcomed them and showed their solidarity.

Canim Lake Band Chief Mike Archie spoke about the important work that needs to be done with the missing and murdered aboriginal women. “It’s people like these walkers who help our families out there who are really hurting. When we don’t know where our people are, it is the grieving that is hard to process.” Mayor Mitch Campsall also spoke about the importance of their quest, and encouraged them to keep up their good work. As they draw closer to the end of their journey, these long-distance walkers are in need of monetary donations, as well as gas, food, water, walking shoes, socks, outerwear and accommodations. They appeal to drivers who see them to slow down and give them space (the vans are clearly marked), and they ask for prayers for a safe journey. Brenda noted her disappointment that few community leaders across the Prairies joined the group in their cause, like Mike, Mitch and others in British Columbia did, and she hopes more will extend invitations to meet up along the final leg of their journey. PROSTATE TESTING The Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) will see a motion tabled later this month encouraging all municipalities to declare September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Sponsored by the District of Powell River and City of North Vancouver, next year’s goals will see a motion to get the province to pay for free, universal prostate (PSA) testing in the way they do for mammograms for women. B.C. and Ontario are the only two provinces in Canada that do not currently pay for PSA testing. Prostate Cancer Canada will also have a booth conducting free PSA tests at UBCM.

Referenda pass with large majority

South Cariboo Highway Rescue and Deka Lake & District Volunteer Fire Department (DLDVFD) Boundary Expansion referenda held Aug. 29 both passed by a wide margin. Cariboo Regional District (CRD) chair Al Richmond says he is pleased with the results of the highway rescue referendum. “It means that folks outside of the boundaries of 100 Mile House will continue to have auto extrication available to them if

they have a motor vehicle accident. That’s a plus.” The vote was 524/87 in favour of having highway rescues continue by contributing to the service that 100 Mile House Fire-Rescue has been doing outside its own boundaries for years, with the municipality covering the rising and burdensome costs. This result at the polls means the greater of $40,000 a year, or a maximum tax increase of $1.92/$100,000 of net taxable property value, will be contributed by taxpayers to

the District of 100 Mile House for continuing these services in Electoral Areas H, L, and most of G. The current 2015 assessed values rate translates to a residential rate of $1.41/$100,000. While it was disappointing that only 611 votes were cast, Richmond says he appreciates those people in the South Cariboo who did turn out to vote, and he is especially happy the referendum received an overwhelming 86 per cent majority. And, then we have stock watering licences of 3,000 gallons a day.” Messner notes many of the ranch’s waterworks and licences are shared with Bridge Creek Estates, as the two ranches were formerly joined as one (prior to the passing of Lord Martin Cecil in 1988). The licence on Exeter Creek, five km east of town, dates back to the 1880s and after a “huge” investment in 2013 to restore the dam, it is completely dry this year, he adds. “There is a huge hayfield there that can produce probably a couple hundred tons of hay, and we got 50 tons, maybe less. Its bone dry – the whole field. “Now, we have cattle on the ranch and they need to drink water every day. The creeks that run [in and out of] the ranch at both ends – because 100 Mile is in a bit of a valley – are both dry.” The ranch manager says this has left them moving cattle around to manage what little water there is, but grazing dry hayfields creates their “biggest”

current problem. “When you put cattle on to graze them and the water is down, you damage the land. So, you really have to back off from doing anything when it’s this dry.” That is because the grazing cattle break up the dry soil, which then washes away with the spring runoff – along with the seeds, Messner explains. Messner notes on top of the sky-high hay prices, in many cases drought also results in low quality hay that will not have the nutrition

cattle and horses need to stay healthy. “We produce just high-quality horse hay, we get it tested by a lab, and we know what is in it. “Cow hay you don’t bother getting tested, you just roll it and feed it over the winter to the cows.” The good horse hay, which was sold locally for $200 a ton two years ago, is now going for $300-$350, he explains. Messner adds hay farmers are now getting over $300 a ton for good cattle alfalfa,

undelivered, whereas two years ago that hay was delivered to local ranches, from as far as Vanderhoof and Alberta, for $150 a ton. Alberta declared a state of agriculture disaster on Aug. 24, and its government is reportedly considering transportation subsidies for ranchers to truck in hay. Messner says if that subsidy is offered, the shortage for B.C. ranchers will hit home that much harder. “That is going to just kill us.”

100 Mile House emergency personnel responded to an MVI on Highway 97 just after 3 p.m. on Aug. 25. A truck towing a large fifth-wheel trailer went off the road and into the ditch across from the 94 Mile Motel south of 100 Mile House. There were no reports of any serious injuries.

RCMP detachment event postponed The 100 Mile House RCMP’s public grand opening event slated to take place at the new detachment facility on Alder Avenue next month has been postponed until spring. Staff/Sgt. Blake Ward says this comes as a result of the 2015 federal election on Oct. 19 with the Privy Council imposing the strict guidelines for communications under the Caretaker Convention. This prohibits announcements of the opening of any federal buildings, including RCMP detachments, he explains. “We have been in discussions with Ottawa requesting an exemption for the 100 Mile House detachment opening. Unfortunately, a final decision was made [Aug. 18] that we will have to cancel the detachment opening on Oct. 3. “I know this is very disappointing news for all of us. I want to thank all of you who have worked so hard to plan the Oct. 3 event and the many community members and businesses who have stepped up to help create an exciting opening.” Meanwhile, the detachment move has commenced around the regular duties of its members, and the new facility will be in use while they await their

public celebration, he explains. “I want to reassure you that this is only a postponement and we have every intention of holding our opening ceremonies in the spring of 2016 after the election and the winter frost.” Ward clarifies his reference to frost refers only to planning for a warmer event day, not anything to do with the building construction. “The only reason for the postponement of the grand opening is the election. We are still on

track to move in and be fully operational in it by Sept 15. “As we can’t have any event until after the government has been declared, we have to wait. Given the time of

year, we didn’t want to have an outdoor event during the cold winter months, so we have decided to wait until spring and warmer weather.” He adds they now

and decided to take out his frustration on the women in the centre.” After the man was arrested, he was transported to 100 Mile District General Hospital to check for mental-health concerns, and then was taken to the RCMP detachment office, Lamb explains. He was subsequently released on a promise to appear in court. However, there were numerous conditions attached to his release, including not going into the South Cariboo Business Centre, which houses the Women’s Centre, and not being in possession of liquor or weapons. Both victims – a staff member and a client – were treated by paramedics and the employee was taken to hospital to have neck, shoulder and back injuries checked out. Lamb says he believes the employees did a great job of dealing with the situation. “There was good communication between the employees by having someone call the police, getting him out and locking the door. In my opinion, they did excellent work to keep everybody who was in there safe.” Ramsay says she and an employee led a debriefing session for the women who had

been in the office during the incident. The following day, the executive director says she felt both sad and angry about what happened. “I was angry because it was so preventable in my mind. I was sad that such a violent attack occurred at the women’s centre and I couldn’t protect my work family.” Ramsay says they

Ranch diploma offered at TRU Unique program for B.C. to be based in Williams Lake

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is breaking new ground by offering a new ranching diploma program in Williams Lake – the first of its kind in British Columbia. The Ministry of

Advanced Education has provided one-time funding of $154,000 for initial delivery of the first year of a new Sustainable Ranching Enterprise Diploma program expected to start at the TRU Williams Lake Campus in 2016. Formerly, B.C.’s aspiring ranchers seeking diplomas needed to travel to Alberta or beyond to find these educational opportunities. Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett says the program was devised by an advisory

committee of Cariboobased ranching representatives to support the needs of local farming families. “Students will be able to stay close to home during their studies in order to support their farms and families.” The new TRU program is intended to address the needs of the local ranching environment with a focus on sustainable management of natural resources and building resilience into ranching enterprises. eniors are an important part of our communities. They are our parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, mentors, neighbours and friends. We want them to enjoy the fullest life possible in British Columbia and that includes making sure they feel safe. Sometimes, as they age, seniors become targets of abuse. Estimates show between four and 10 per cent of seniors will experience some form of physical, emotional, financial or sexual abuse, or neglect. Elder abuse can be very difficult to detect. Seniors are often reluctant to report abuse by family members. Consequently, it is significantly under-reported. The work that the Office of the Seniors Advocate is doing with regard to how these cases are reported is an important step in the continued efforts to end this unfortunate reality.

Students of all ages will be excited about going back to school to see their friends, meet new teachers and some will be new to the school and maybe new to the community, and they may be thinking about embarking on a new chapter of their lives – and not about traffic safety. The last thing we want to happen is to have that excitement come crashing down on our students. As motorists, we have to take the initial safety steps, as we are the ones driving the vehicles that do the damage. We have to be more aware of the possibility of a child dashing out into traffic, so we have to be alert and scanning the areas on either side of us, as well as keeping our eyes on the road. We need to be focused on the task in front of us and not being distracted by mobile communication devices or anything else that will cause us to not be looking for potential problems. We have to remember the maximum speed limit in a school zone is 30 km/h, and it doesn’t hurt to slow down a bit more if there are a lot of children on the sidewalks, especially near crosswalks, parked vehicles and intersections. The 30 km/h speed limit posted in school zones is in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and we should always stop for pedestrians – it’s the law and it's there to protect our children. If a vehicle is stopped in front of us, it may have yielded to a pedestrian, so we have to be prepared to stop, too. It is also important to note vehicles approaching from both directions must stop for school buses when their lights are flashing. The lights mean children are getting on or off the bus, and they could be crossing the road to get to or from their homes. This is a significant problem in our rural areas, so drivers must stop until the bus moves on. When we’re dropping children off in school zones, we should make sure they exit the vehicle from the door closest to the sidewalk. We should never allow our children to cross the road mid-block. Meanwhile, students also need to be safety wise and road wary to avoid accidents. Students must not be distracted when they are going to and from school, especially when they are walking through intersections and crosswalks. Older students need to stop texting and remove headphones or ear buds when crossing the street. They must not jaywalk as it is both dangerous and it also sets a bad example for younger children. As parents, we need to teach our children to look both ways and make eye contact with a motorist before crossing the road. These are simple safety rules and if they are practised daily, everyone will have a safe and happy day.

Support people who are walking to bring awareness To the editor: I am writing to request the assistance of people within the provinces and those along the route of the “The Walk for ALL Missing and Murdered 2015” to help initiate a national inquiry into “Murdered and Missing Aboriginal Women” in Canada. Most recently, I found myself in the company of some fine individuals. Brenda Osborne along with Althea Guiboche and their group of walkers that were recently in Edmonton, Alberta. Their accommodations for the evening

did not work out, so my brothers and friends were able to accommodate them. We also walked for them and gave them a much needed day off. We also raised $1,692 at the local powwow for their journey into British Columbia. I am asking your organization(s), all levels of government, civil servants, cities towns, First Nation, bands, chiefs, councils, members and citizens of both wonderful provinces to get involved. I invite you to participate and call to attention the many murdered and missing women, men and children in

this country. The walk once known as the “Walk for Murdered and Missing Women” has now morphed and is aptly named the Walk for All Missing and Murdered Women, Men and Children.” I ask you to write a letter to your MLA, your federal MPs, your mayors, your chiefs and councils and call to attention this important federal inquiry. With that I need to also call to your attention the urgent needs of these humble courageous walkers, who are continuing on bandaged feet, some now on crutches as the

Dedicate some of your time and resources to get these people to their end goal in a safe Canadian, Albertan and British Columbian manner. Is it Stephen Harper’s muzzling of scientists and his new limits on freedom of speech? His obsession with controlling the message has verged on the Orwellian and has damaged both the health of Canada’s democracy and the country’s reputation abroad.

Is it the gagging of conservative MPs from debating and speaking their minds? Some are rising up and challenging Mr. Harper’s restrictive leadership. Perhaps some are satisfied with simply being a follower and messenger for the Prime Minister’s Office. Perhaps Cathy McLeod falls under this category. Maybe it was Mr. Harper’s banning all media coverage of fallen

soldiers’ caskets and refusing to allow the lowering of our flag to half-mast; or spending $700,000 in court to avoid paying veterans the benefits due to them. Bill C51 is causing irreversible harm to all Canadians, along with our uniquely fair and just Canadian Charter of Rights. The bill’s broad scope and terminology goes far beyond terrorism, allowing no inherent democratic right

to speak; or to even send an e-mail without fear of retribution from a spy agency with no oversight. Stephen Harper, you’ve been leading us to become a nation without vision; secrecy and information control has created more problems than ever existed. Your message tactics ignore the painful realities that don’t fit with your narrative, such as climatechange science or the absence of

nergy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett spent much of last week in Alaska, trying to assure local fishermen and environmentalists that British Columbia’s mine approval process is “basically the same” as Alaska’s. Bennett visited an abandoned mine in northwest B.C. that continues to leak acid and metal pollution into the Taku River, vowing to supervise cleanup by a new operator. He noted that one of B.C.’s proposed new mines includes a 23-kilometre pipe system to move ore out of the shared watershed for processing. This is typical of the discourse between B.C. and our American cousins. Only our industry is questioned. Meanwhile in Colorado, the latest mine spill disaster was blamed on a mistake by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. And in Alaska as in the rest of the U.S., new metal mines, such as the giant Pebble project, depend on the same engineering and testing as ours. Here in Victoria, the Fantasy Island dialogue about oil continued, with Green

to the point where the Trans-Alaska pipeline now carries about a quarter of its design capacity. It’s expected to run out around 2040, but for now Valdez still loads more than a tanker a day. Waldman writes that when North America’s largest oilfield was discovered in 1968, companies first considered extending the Alaska Railroad up to Deadhorse. But they would have needed 63 trains a day of 100 cars each. Trucks, cargo planes and even nuclear-powered submarines running under the Arctic ice were briefly considered. Since we had a bit of hand-wringing last week about a small earthquake near Fort Nelson that may or may not have been triggered by hydraulic fracturing, it’s worth noting that Trans-Alaska oil also causes noticeable tremors as it rushes down the Chugach Mountains to a sudden stop at Valdez. the province Horsefly River re-opened for angling WILLIAMS LAKE - The B.C. government is reopening angling in the classified waters section of the Horsefly River, effective Aug. 26, due to cooling water temperatures. The Horsefly River was closed to fishing on July 13 due to warming water temperatures. The closure was supported by the Horsefly River Angling Management Plan, which calls for the river to be closed for conservation when temperatures exceed 18C. The closure was originally put in place until Aug. 31, but cooling night time air temperatures have resulted in water temperatures cooling. Ministry staff have been monitoring water temperatures on a daily basis since the closure was implemented. The average daily water temperature as of Aug. 24, 2015, had fallen to 16C, which is below the identified threshold of 18C. The Horsefly River was closed due to high water temperatures three times over the last 10 years (2006, 2009 and 2010).

Road rage sparks pedestrian accident SALMON ARM - Salmon Arm RCMP are investigating an incident where a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Aug. 21 at approximately 7:30 p.m. The 30-year-old man was hit by a westbound vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway near 5th Street SW. He was taken to hospital in serious condition. Salmon Arm RCMP report the man was driving on Lakeshore Drive, paralleling a second vehicle that was eastbound on the Trans-Canada Highway. The man was reported to be upset after having a horn honked at his vehicle by the driver of the second vehicle. The driver of that second vehicle stopped at 5th Street SW on the Trans-Canada Highway. Upon seeing the vehicle stopped on the highway, the 30-year-old man stopped on Lakeshore Drive and got out of his vehicle. Police believe, based on witness accounts, that the man crossed the westbound lane of the highway on foot in an apparent attempt to confront the other driver. While doing so, he was struck by a westbound vehicle. The man was tended to at the scene by BC Ambulance paramedics before he was transported to Shuswap Lake General Hospital.

Local RCMP dealt with several I need your trade! impaired drivers and thefts

Police

report 100 Mile House RCMP responded to 91 complaints and calls for service during the past week. Below are highlights of the week’s calls. Invalid licence On Aug. 31, Cariboo Traffic Services stopped a vehicle on Alpine Ave. The male driver did not have a valid driver’s licence and was found to be in the company of a person he was on conditions not to be in contact with. He was subsequently arrested and released for court at a later date. Multiple issues On Aug. 30, 100 Mile House RCMP were called to a report of a possible impaired driver on Highway 97 near 101 Mile. The vehicle was located by police and stopped. The male driver was found not to be impaired by alcohol but by drugs after being tested by a Drug Recognition Expert member. He had three firearms in the vehicle at the time and did not have a valid possession licence and was prohibited from possessing firearms. The driver was subsequently arrested and the vehicle searched. One of the firearms was found to be stolen

from Williams Lake in 2013, and a quantity of MDMA (Ecstasy) was also found inside the vehicle. The male was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and was released from custody for court at a later date. He was not from 100 Mile House and is believed to be a resident of the Fort St. John area. His vehicle was impounded.

Intoxicated male On Aug. 30, RCMP were called to the 100 Mile District General Hospital for a report of an aggressive intoxicated male. Police attended and determined the male to be on court conditions to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. He was subsequently arrested and released when sober for court at a later date. B&E and theft On Aug. 30, police were called to a breakand-enter of an office at an apartment building on Cedar Avenue. Entry was gained and a safe entered from which money was stolen. Items were seized by police for forensic examination. Stolen boat On Aug. 29, RCMP were called to a report of a stolen boat and trailer on Womack Road. A 1987 Grey Highliner boat trailer and a 15-foot Silverline boat with an

85 horsepower Mercury outboard motor were taken sometime between Aug. 27 and 28.

Over .08 On Aug. 29, Cariboo Traffic Services members were conducting a road check on Horse Lake Road. A vehicle was stopped and the driver showed symptoms of alcohol consumption. The male driver blew a “fail” on an approved screening device. He was detained for impaired driving and brought back to the detachment for further testing, and blew over the legal limit of .08. He was released for court at a later date. Impaired driving On Aug. 27, Cariboo Traffic Services members stopped a vehicle that was observed cutting off a motorcycle on Birch Avenue. The male driver showed symptoms of alcohol impairment. A breath test was completed using an approved screening device which resulted in a “fail.” The driver was issued a 90 day immediate roadside driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Liquor theft On Aug. 26, RCMP were called to a theft of liquor from Lakewood Cold Beer and Wine on Highway 97. Two unknown males had entered the store and stole a bottle of liquor. One of the suspects was found later in the area of Cedar Avenue. He was arrested for theft and obstruction of a peace officer, and also had an outstanding warrant for breach of probation. He was released for court at a later date. Car theft attempted On Aug. 25, RCMP were called to a report of an attempted theft of vehicle in Centennial Park on Cedar Avenue. A vehicle was entered and attempts were made to steal it. It is suspected that something or someone may have scared off the suspect before the vehicle could be taken. Attempted break-in On Aug. 25, RCMP were called to an attempted theft from vehicle on North Birch Avenue. It is believed the suspect attempted to steal a purse from inside the vehicle. It is believed to have occurred between 6 and 8 p.m. that evening.

The annual Terry Fox Run takes place in 100 Mile House on Sept. 20, starting at the South Cariboo Visitor Centre. It is a great time to get in on the fundraiser, as this year’s milestone event celebrates 35 years since Terry Fox made his historic run. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and then starting at 10 a.m. folks can run, walk or bike the route, following a brief warmup led by Kam Taylor of Focused Fitness. Organizer Shannon Pennicott says the fivekilometre lap includes a one-km loop around the 100 Mile Marsh. The five-km route is through Centennial Park and up to the

Bridge Creek waterfalls, and anyone wishing to do a 10-km run is welcome to do it twice. The falls portion is not wheelchair accessible, she notes. Refreshments and snacks will be provided for participants, and there is no registration fee and no minimum donation; however, all donations and pledges support cancer research. Pennicott adds a limited quantity of T-shirts will be available for purchase, and more are available on the national Terry Fox website at www.terryfox.org/run. RBC donates 25k to health foundation Funds going toward urology services in 100 Mile House

The South Cariboo Health Foundation (SCHF) received a sizable donation from the Royal Bank of Canada to mark the bank’s milestone 50th anniversary in 100 Mile House. The $25,000 donation from the RBC Foundation was given to the SCHF for many reasons, explains local RBC community manager Scott Saito. “RBC is committed to supporting communities where we work and live. Our support of hospitals through our branch anniversary program is about celebrating the history of the community and the community members. “Hospitals tend to impact everyone, and usually share a history of community presence

as a town generally needs a hospital and a bank to be established. In addition to the $25,000 donation, we have been able to donate another $15,000 to various community groups and charities through our Days of Service program this year.” The Days of Service program requires a minimum of three RBC employees along with three members of a charity to do at least three hours of volunteer work together. Once completed, RBC is able to donate $1,000 from

the RBC Foundation to the charity to support their cause. This program really shows the commitment of RBC employees to give back to the community and the support RBC provides in celebration of employee volunteers, Saito says. “Between these two programs, and other smaller donations we have made throughout the community this year, we have topped $50,000 in total donations to 100 Mile House and it’s community members. “With it being our 50th anniver-

sary this year, it was my goal at the beginning of the year to find a way to contribute $50,000 in

donations and with a lot of hard work and volunteer hours, and the support of RBC, we have been able to do that.” Saito thanks RBC staff and all the community groups they had the opportunity to work with this year, and to RBC Foundation for the financial support and its commitment to its employees and the community. The $25,000 donation was “good timing” says Mary Shennum, chair of the SCHF, as the foundation is helping to finance a local urology services program, which was approved by Interior Health in April.

Public invited to West Fraser Anniversary BBQ 100 Mile Lumber hosts celebration of history and community partnership

In recognition of its 60th anniversary, West Fraser is hosting a barbecue and community celebration in 100 Mile House on Sept. 13.

The event in Centennial Park is free and open to the general public. It will see performances by the Cariboo Idols, music by Rob Fry and MC Larry Rhode, as well as fun activities, including a giant foosball table, survivor challenge and washer toss games. There will also be plenty of activities for children, including two bouncy castles, a giant water slip-and-slide, face-painting, relay

races, cotton candy and more. West Fraser will also have information booths regarding its operations. “West Fraser’s contribution to community life and economic stability is through the shared commitment of our staff, their families, our contractors, partners and community,” reads a press release from the forestry company, which operates 100 Mile Lumber.

checked out the various martial arts schools that opened in 100 Mile House, whether it was judo, taekwondo, karate or kick boxing. He learned Bill Underwood’s extremely deadly martial art of Combato in 1951, just before I was born, after the Second World War and was always extremely careful about who he taught it to. When I taught Defendo, a milder form of the relatively unknown art, Jim came and taught us Combato and also how to use the martial arts cane, which he always had close at hand. One of my prized possessions is the martial arts cane Jimmy made for me. When I requested he sign it,

Jim replied, “You want me to put my name on something you might have to hurt someone with?” Thanks to Donna Barnett for hosting Jimmy Keller’s celebration of life. Volunteers appreciated Volunteers who donate their own personal time for causes they believe in, for free, are rare and valuable people in our community. Lone Butte volunteers have recently helped to refinish the Lone Butte Community Hall floor and replaced the treated wood on Water Tower Rest Station playground children’s toy. The park was temporarily closed until repairs could be done.

The South Cariboo Food Security Committee has put out a plea for food donations to support the hungry families and individuals in need this summer. Local gardeners with extra produce in their plots, and the general public through non-perishable donations, are being asked to help with this food crisis. Children, youth and families are challenged daily in having enough to eat, especially nutritious food. With the ever increasing need for food, our shelfs are really low. The following staples would be greatly appreciated at the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre, Loaves and Fishes and the Womens Centre. • Pasta • Macaroni and Cheese • Canned Soup • Canned Beans • Peanut Butter (small jars) • Oatmeal • Rice • Size 2 and Size 5 and 6 diapers • Formula And anything else that a community member might have as a food donation. We will make sure that all donations are used by those in need. We also all greatly appreciate fresh food including eggs, bread, vegetables and fruit. The newly established Community Place Garden at First St. & Birch Ave. is now harvesting; so help with watering, weeding and picking would be greatly appreciated; to learn your way around the garden, come down there on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. and speak to one of the co-ordinating gardeners. That produce is there for the benefit of the vulnerable population, and those who are hungry.

Cue start to new theatre season

Looking ahead to the next 100 Mile House Performing Arts Society production, a family friendly pantomime version of Cinderella, director Donalda Speers says “think the Three Stooges, Monty Python with family content, and a lot of audience participation.” With a cast of close to 20, Cinderella promises to be a “raucous, fun time” in time for the Christmas season in December. (The three “ugly” step sisters, for instance, will be played by men.) “It’s a fun comedy with some singing and general mayhem. Sports Wet dogs run in 100 Mile

Strong wind and cold rain barely put a damper on the Cariboo Agility Team's sanctioned dog agility trial in 100 Mile House, Aug. 29-30. The annual event saw 48 dogs and 28 people registered from 100 Mile House, 108 Mile Ranch, and all over British Columbia. “We had 148 runs on Saturday and again on Sunday,” says Roxanne Ziefflie, president of the Cariboo Agility Team. “There were 47 qualifying runs, meaning the dogs ran clean within time.” Dogs of all breeds and sizes jumped through hoops, paused on a table, ran through tunnels and poles and up and down the teeter board set up colourfully in the grassy outfield at Lumberman's Park. “Despite the rain and wind, everyone had a great time,” Ziefflie adds. “We want to thank the District of 100 Mile House once again for taking such good care of us.”

New league for minor hockey teams This year will be a different one for some of the 100 Mile House & District Minor Hockey Association. Because of a persistent decline in player numbers, local peewee, bantam and midget division teams can switch from the North Central District league and join the Okanagan Mainline Amateur Hockey Association's (OMAHA) ThompsonCariboo Recreational Super League. This league was formed at the north end of the OMAHA District several years ago and successfully provides regularly scheduled league games, explains local minor hockey administrator Kersti Foote. 100 Mile House teams in those divisions will play regularly scheduled league games against teams from Lillooet, Clearwater, Ashcroft, Logan Lake, Chase and Merritt. (Atom level players, whether they are recreational or development players, will as usual be playing in the North Central District with teams from Williams Lake, Quesnel, Prince George, McBride, Valemount and

Bantam Rep Tier 3 also have an OMAHA schedule this season, but the teams playing in it will be more than at the rec. level.” “This is not the season to take a year off and snowboard, although the league schedule provides weekends off to do that as well,” Foote adds. “This is the best opportunity for our kids to play in a league like the bigger centres and host games in front of a hometown crowd on a regular basis.” The local association is hosting open meetings on Sept. 9 and Sept. 10, both from 6 to 8 p.m. at the South Cariboo Rec Centre, to answer questions and provide more information to parents regarding the changes. The association is also looking for volunteer coaches for the recreational teams at all levels. Help available to fight voracious fir beetles

Guide helps manage Douglas-fir beetles on private land Owners of private land in the Cariboo Region have a new tool to help prevent the spread of damaging Douglas-fir beetles on their property. A Guide to Managing Douglas-fir Beetles on Private Property is an illustrated publication produced by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO). It helps landowners quickly identify the larval and adult stages of this harmful insect and recognize the tell-tale signs of an infestation. Populations of Douglas-fir beetles are currently high in the Cariboo Region. If left unchecked, a serious infestation can damage or kill Douglas-fir trees wherever they may grow in British Columbia, especially in the dry, Interior regions of the province. The beetles normally attack small groups of trees, but it’s not uncommon for dozens of trees to be affected at the same time during a significant outbreak. The new guide includes information on: • Identifying current Douglas-fir beetle

attacks in forested areas; • Checking for external signs of an attack on individual trees; • Checking for internal signs of an attack on individual trees; • Safely removing and disposing of Douglasfir trees that are under attack; and • Taking effective remedial steps to reduce the risk of beetles

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother at the 100 Mile House Hospital on Aug. 13, 2015. She is predeceased by her daughter Doris. Evellen will be greatly missed. Left to cherish her many memories are her surviving sons Shane and Dallas, her five grandchildren; Mathew, Daniel, Summer, Brooklynne and Kristen. Evellen was born on July 5, 1948 at Headingly, Manitoba to Louis and Victoria Haugan. She was the youngest child of a family of five. She lived in Headingly her entire childhood and was known as an outgoing child with a bit of mischievousness mixed in with her kind and happy personality. Evellen later moved to British Columbia with her young family in 1971 and eventually settled in 100 Mile House in 1980. Evellen was a generous and loving person who loved children, horses, gardening, walking and life in general. Evellen will be particularly missed by those who loved her wonderful sense of humour, benefitted from her kind and sharing nature and above all her optimistic outlook on life. In her own words “I have always had a strong faith in the goodness of life despite its occasional hardships”. Losing Evellen will be one of those hardships. Area resident Michell Gardner is the local coordinator for the 100 Mile House Kidney Walk, which will be held at Centennial Park on Sept. 27. Registration for the event is at 9 a.m., and the 2.5-kilometre walk starts at 10. Pledge forms are available at Safeway, Lakewood Inn Beer & Wine Store and the 108 Mile Esso. While this is the first time she has organized the Kidney Walk, Gardner has experience running Terry Fox Runs on Gabriola Island. Gardner says she is looking for volunteers for the day of the event. “We need people to help set-up and take-down and help

to pick stuff – water and food – up on the day of the event.” She is also looking a couple of people who would be interested in sitting on the kidney walk committee. The Reliability Manager utilizes related experience, project management expertise, leadership abilities and a preventative maintenance mindset. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of related preventative and predictive maintenance knowledge, along with 5+ years experience in a leadership role within an industrial plant or manufacturing setting. A Mechanical/Electrical/Structural Engineering degree is required and Project Management training would be a definite asset. Strong computer skills: Excel and Word (intermediate), exposure to computerized maintenance management systems (IVARA, in our case) would be an asset.
