Stray bullet kills 74-year-old man Nearby targeted shooting hits innocent victim standing outside Laura Rodgers Abbotsford News
While standing outside his Abbotsford home on Wednesday evening, a 74-year-old man was killed by a stray bullet fired in a nearby targeted shooting. It is the latest in a string of violent incidents which police are calling the Townline Hill conflict, a feud between two rival groups of young
men in a West Abbotsford neighbourhood. Police received a 911 call at 7:17 p.m. reporting shots fired in the 3500 block of Promontory Court, a suburban cul-de-sac next to Maclure Park. Const. Ian MacDonald said Abbotsford Police officers first found a gunfire-damaged car parked in a driveway. They then searched next door, and discovered a man who had suffered a
“very significant” gunshot wound. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The owner of the gunfire-damaged vehicle, and the house it was parked outside of, are both known to police – leading them to assert the shooting was targeted. The investigation has since been taken over by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). Continued on A4

“It was an absolute horrible tragedy, and a worst-case scenario in many ways,” said MacDonald. “This 74-year-old man was an innocent victim who happened to be at the fence line. He probably was not even visible from the roadway.” MacDonald says the investigations into this and other Townline Hill incidents have been hindered by a lack of participation from area residents. “We haven’t received a ton of cooperation from the people who are directly involved. Many times we arrive at the scene and we are basically stonewalled, and I think this has to be a wake-up call to everybody in the community that they need to assist police and we have to restore public safety,” he said. Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun urged local residents to bring any relevant information forward to police. “People know who these people are,” said Braun. “We need their help to let us know who they are….You can’t keep this kind of stuff quiet. the age of 16 and one under the age of 14. He has been charged with four counts of sexual interference, two counts of invitation to sexual touching, two counts of making or publishing child porn, and one count of possessing child porn. Felling has been released from custody on $1,000 bail. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the new charges stem from an investigation that was continued after Felling’s first five charges were laid in December 2013 and January 2014. The charges resulted after an Abbotsford Police investigator who was searching online for images of child sex-
ual abuse was able to trace the computer IP address of certain images to an address in Abbotsford. A search warrant was executed at that home on Dec. 6, 2013, and Felling was arrested but later released on bail. He was charged the following day with sexual interference of a person under the age of 16. Four other charges – possession of child pornography, importing or distributing child porn, making or publishing child porn, and accessing child porn – were laid in January 2014. Felling pleaded guilty in November of last year. He is awaiting sentencing.
Watering ban lifted with heavy rainfall Laura RODGERS Abbotsford News
Due to this past week’s heavy rains, Abbotsford and Mission are dropping down their water-use restrictions. Over 330 mm of rain fell on Dickson Lake, the municipalities’ water source, from Aug. 27 to Sept. 1, according to the city. Due to how much the lake’s water level has risen, some lawn watering will now be allowed Water use restrictions are now dropped down to Stage 2, from the Stage 3 restrictions which were in place since June 29. Stage 2 allows lawn sprinkling twice a week, between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Even-numbered addresses can water on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and odd-numbered addresses can water on Thursdays and Sundays. New permits will once again be issued to property owners with newly seeded or sodded lawns who wish to water daily. Stage 2 restrictions were adopted from May 1 to Sept. 30 this year, one month earlier than the usual period of June 1 to Sept. 30, due to a smaller-than-usual winter snow pack.

Invitation-only event draws 850 Conservative supporters Abbotsford News
More than 850 Conservative supporters showed up to the prime minister’s invitation-only appearance at the Dynamic Windows and Doors factory in west Abbotsford’s warehouse on the evening of Sept. 2 — the party’s largest rally on the campaign trail so far. The venue was a fit for a Stephen Harper rally, as it reflected many of the major issues used to frame the Conservative campaign: value-added manufacturing, sustainable economic growth, and aid to refugees. Harper gave a long speech focusing on his party’s plans for the economy and Canada’s military involvement abroad. Dynamic Windows and Doors received a federal grant of $900,000 this July to build and market ultra-energy-efficient windows, modeled on a design developed in Germany. At the event, Abbotsford MP Ed Fast highlighted how the company’s products

add value to Canadian lumber while promoting environmental sustainability — exemplifying the sort of business he’d like to see grow Canada’s economy. The company also employs nearly 100 refugees from Iraq and Syria, which gave a jumping-off point to discuss refugee policy and Canada’s involvement abroad against ISIL. “On October 19, Canadians will make a choice,” said the
Conservative leader. “It is a real choice about the direction of this country; it’s a choice with profound implications for our economy, for our security and for our families.” Canada’s economy officially entered a recession as of this month, according to Statistics Canada, which has become a major point of discussion for all parties’ campaigns. In Abbotsford, Harper didn’t use the word re-
cession, and instead focused on the signs of growth for the economy in June, including a 0.5 per cent uptick in the GDP. His repeated pledges for a “low-tax” economic plan were met with hearty applause, as were promises of tough sentences for violent criminals. When he told the assembled crowd about his party’s commitment to maintaining the state of Israel, supporters rose in a standing ovation.

Joining him was a large contingent of candidates and MPs from throughout the Fraser Valley and the eastern Lower Mainland, including Fast and new Mission-MatsquiFraser Valley candidate Brad Vis. Both said the event’s record turnout was heartening, though not surprising given the region’s long-standing status as a Conservative stronghold. “I’m very pleased to be able to host such a large rally for the prime minister here in Abbotsford,” said Fast. “As you know, we have a very strong Conservative family within our community…we’re going to do everything we can to re-elect a member of parliament for the Conservative government in this election, and also help the ridings around here, within the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland.” A small group of protesters had gathered outside the venue, but were not allowed inside.

Over a month into the federal election campaign, the final major party candidate has been announced in the area: Peter Njenga, the Liberal vying to represent Abbotsford. Njenga, an accountant heavily involved in charity work to help the homeless, narrowly lost the Liberal nomination race in his home riding of South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale. Within the riding of Abbotsford, he said he’ll focus his campaign on how international trade agreements can af-

Surprising closures to ‘endless summer’ Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand The ‘endless’ summer of 2015 came to an abrupt end for me in the past week, beginning with an osprey nest in the northeast corner of Matsqui Prairie toppling onto hydro lines last Friday. That knocked power out at 7 a.m., requiring me to manually raise a garage door, move a car and dig out the generator which, thanks to neglect, had a dead battery. Fortunately, a couple of pulls on the starter cord and she fired up, allowing a hairdryer (not mine) to work and
coffee to be made. That, of course, was followed by Saturday’s big windstorm, a second extended power failure and the subsequent deluge, coupled with temperatures that dropped to single digits by Wednesday afternoon. However, the excitement really began last Thursday when, driving along North Parallel Road just west of the Kilgard Reserve, I was astonished to see a cow elk grazing just beneath the powerlines. It is my understand-
ing that elk were eradicated from the eastern parts of the Fraser Valley well before Sumas Lake was drained, thus to have one now placidly grazing on land that was formerly submerged makes its presence truly historic. I also heard that a nearby resident saw a pair of the animals the evening before my sighting. Fortunately, unlike with Sasquatch sightings, I managed to get a couple of photos as proof of its existence. Where it/they came from is anyone’s guess, and whether they will survive in such close proximity to the freeway is another matter. Regardless, having such magnificent creatures literally with-
in a kilometre of the urbanized Whatcom Road area is unprecedented. That evening, sitting on my deck still marvelling over the elk, the

well into the hundreds to hear what Prime Minister Harper had to say in the build-up to the October 19 federal election. The venue was a crowded, cleared space within a huge door and window factory, which may seem odd but was fitting since it is not only
one of Abbotsford’s largest employers but a significant international exporter of product. Which fit rather well with Harper’s message of the need for a strong economy and job creation that, since it was a partisan crowd, was enthusiastically received. While standing in the line-up to gain entrance to the facility I found the significant number of young people surprising, given that Conservative Party rallies are traditionally the electoral turf of the grey and balding. And certainly those of us sporting such indicators of age were well in the majority Wednesday evening. However, seeing

teens and twenty-somethings taking an interest in how our country is to be governed is refreshing. This election will also provide British Columbians with the opportunity to have a significant impact on the outcome. Not only does B.C. have a half dozen more seats in Parliament, but due to new electoral rules, election results from across Canada will be available to us before polls close in B.C. This may create the potential for strategic voting, and spurring parties to engage in last-minute ‘get out to vote’ frenzies. Won’t that be fun! markrushton @abbynews.com

I am writing this as an octogenarian-plus with some thoughts regarding our current election. At my age, any election results will have very minimal effect on my well-being. I do worry about the results on my children, even more so on my grandchildren. Our present government may have made some mistakes but have kept the country on a steady course. Why do I worry about my family? One reason is financial. Even our present government has had deficit budgets, but they have helped us through some tough times. This deficit must be reduced as quickly as possible, even if it would be painful for many. I was born during the depression of the 1930s, and do remember the lean times post-depression. I lived on a small mixed farm where my parents raised a family of five children. We never missed a meal, and by today’s standards ate very healthy, farm raised food, with the exception of sugar, salt, syrup and bologna. Neighbours supported one another by sharing beef when butchered or surplus vegetables. We don’t want to go back to those times, but we can learn from them. For the sake of our future generation, now is the time to tighten our belts and start getting rid of our debt. It is up to government to set a course for the future. It is up to the Canadian population to support the government in power, to carry out this difficult task. At present we are in a position where we can salvage our economy, but time is running out. Just considered what has happened in Greece, and could happen in many other countries. Beware of pie-in-the-sky promises and solutions. There may have to be some sacrifices – our future generations are worth it. Don’t leave our future generations with debts impossible to pay off. Eric Myrholm Abbotsford

UFV is also debuting a new robotics technician program this year, which will teach students how to build, maintain, and control the type of robotic equipment used in agricultural, manufacturing and resource industries. About 12,800 students in total have registered so far this year, which puts the school on track to match last year’s full enrolment of 14,387 students. The regional breakdown for this year looks similar to 2013-2014, which saw 5,373 students enroll at Abbotsford campuses, 1,721 in Chilliwack, 174 in Mission and 22 in Hope. Four hundred and ninety took only online courses that year, 189 were registered in an off-site, non-campusbased program within Canada, and 101 were registered in programs taking place outside of Canada. Pinton says the school is at 100 per cent of student capacity as defined by the Ministry of Advanced Education. The number of available spaces remaining is less than the number of applications received.

Elk sightings near Whatcom Conservation officer says unusual visitor could be from Harrison area
Wednesdays or Sundays
Frank Bucholtz Abbotsford News
A young elk which has been seen numerous times near Whatcom Road and Highway 1 is an unusual visitor to Abbotsford. Conservation officer Don Stahl said Tuesday the elk has been spotted regularly in the area north of the highway for the past week. Other citizens have reported they have seen a pair of the creatures in the same area. “I have never seen an elk in Abbotsford,” he said. “I’m not sure where it came from, but I want to emphasize that it is protected. The Sumas First Nation, who gave us a call, also wants to ensure that it is protected.” Roosevelt elk are native to the West Coast, and there are more than 3,000 on Vancouver Island, mostly in or near the mountains in the central part of the island. There are significant herds in Strathcona Park near Campbell River. At one time, they were common in the Fraser Valley as well, but they were hunted out of existence here in the early 1900s. Roosevelt elk can grow larger than other species of elk in Canada, and their historic range is from north of San Francisco to the B.C. central coast. A group of 22 elk were transplanted from Vancouver Island to the Sunshine Coast between 1987 and 1989. That herd has thrived, and has been the source for further transplants north of Pitt Lake, north of Stave Lake, and on the west side of Harrison Lake. That transplant took place in 2013 and 2014. Sts’ailes First Nation played a significant role in the project to bring elk back to Harrison, where they had once roamed. Forty of the elk have been relocated close to the Sts’ailes First Nation area, and 20 were brought up the river and Harrison Lake by barge to Port Douglas. Stahl said he thinks the Abbotsford elk is a visitor from the Harrison Lake area. Elk from the Pitt Lake transplant have wandered down to the Albion area of Maple Ridge, adjacent to Lougheed Highway, and several years ago, an elk was hit and killed on Highway 1 near Annis Road in Chilliwack. He said the Harrison elk have already been seen near Highway 7 on the north side of the Fraser, so seeing one in Abbotsford isn’t a complete surprise. “Elk are on the increase in the Fraser Valley,” he said. Stahl is asking members of the public to be vigilant in watching out for the Abbotsford elk and ensuring that no one tries to shoot it. He said people can report any violation of wildlife laws to 1-877-952-7277.

B.C. is dodging downturn: economist Canada’s baby recession reflects Alberta’s dive A small contraction of Canada’s economy in the first half of the year put the country in a technical recession, which may already be over if an uptick in June wasn’t a blip. But a leading B.C. economist doesn’t believe the ‘R’ word applies to B.C., or to most of the country for that matter. “I don’t believe Canada is in an official recession,” said Helmut Pastrick, chief economist for Central 1 Credit Union. “This situation is not really indicative of what most economists would consider a full-fledged recession.” He said the downturn is a narrow one focused mainly on the energy sector, hitting Alberta hard as producers slash capital spending following the plunge in oil prices. Statistics Canada reported a 0.5 per cent drop in GDP in the second quarter, following a 0.8 per cent decline in the first quarter. But a monthly breakdown pointed to economic growth of 0.5 per cent in June. “That offers some glimmer of hope that what we’ve seen in the prior five months of negative GDP contraction could be at an end.” B.C. and central Canada are likely not in re-

cession, Pastrick stressed. There may be weak regions of B.C., he said, such as the energy-exposed northeast or mining-dependent communities hit after metallurgical coal firms cut production. But Pastrick sees continued slow growth in southern B.C., including the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan. “Our forecast for the B.C. economy is that we will see growth this year and we currently do not see it in a recession.” He said employment data backs that up, indicating job growth across B.C. running at about 0.7 per cent so far this year. As for whether the term recession should apply to the country as a whole, Pastrick said he leaves that to a panel of economists at the C.D. Howe Institute, who assess various factors, including the depth of the downturn, its duration and breadth across multiple industries, and not strictly the rule of thumb regarding two quarters of shrinkage. The expected confirmation of a recession and what to do about it has been an issue in the federal election campaign, with the Liberals pledging aggressive stimulus spending and deficits, in contrast to Conservative and NDP promises to balance the budget.

Abby man dies in Beetles invade water-filled ditch Abbotsford hives Deceased was 35 A 35-year-old Abbotsford man died in Pitt Meadows on Tuesday morning when his truck flipped over into a ditch filled with water, according to the Ridge Meadows RCMP. The man was turning right from McNeil Road onto Harris Road around 7 a.m. when his pickup truck flipped over in a water-filled roadside ditch. The water in the ditch was nearly eight feet deep, preventing emergency services from accessing the vehicle’s cab, according to police. The B.C. Ambulance
Service, Pitt Meadows Fire Department and local RCMP were called to the location just before 7:20 a.m. The vehicle had to be pulled from the ditch by a tow truck in order to remove the deceased man from the cab. The coroner attended the scene and has taken over the investigation. Permission from next of kin to release the man’s name has not been obtained. (With files from Cole Wagner, RidgeMeadows Times)
An invasive beetle has been found in an Abbotsford beehive, and local beekeeping authorities will conduct an investigation this week to find out if the troublesome pests have spread to other hives. According to Paul van Westendorp, the provincial apiculturist at the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture, the labour intensive process will involve combing through a number of hives to chart the possible spread. Small hive beetles are an invasive insect hailing from sub-Saharan Africa. They lay eggs in hives, with their young eating their way through the honeycomb. While they’re considered a minor pest and no threat to healthy colonies by African beekeepers, physical and behavioural differences between African and North American honeybees have led American and Canadian apiculturists to be wary of whether the insect could cause more damage here. While some beetles were found in a single hive in southern Abbotsford, there is no evidence they were part of a colony large enough to reproduce and spread. “We are speculating, as we don’t know what the extent of the infestation is,” said van Westendorp. Harm to Abbotsford’s beehives would have far-reaching effects, as the area’s blueberry industry and other crops are largely dependent on bee pollination.

MEI has an open door policy and provides our students with a holistic education that focuses on developing the whole person; socially, intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically. Our unique academic structure integrates the BC Curriculum with a Christian perspective. This is complemented by caring and qualified professionals who are committed to creating a nurturing and supportive environment. Sports, hockey academy, drama, fine arts and many other extracurricular activities round out the MEI experience, giving students a variety of opportunities to discover who they are, while making lifelong friendships in a diverse community. “When I think of MEI, I think of a place where I can go to learn, not only about math, biology, and English, but also about God and all the good works he is doing in my life. This year at Trinity Western University is going to be a new and exciting experience, one that am sure I will never forget. It may be challenging at times but from all that MEI has equipped me with I know that I will be ready, not just educationally but spiritually as well”. Samantha Schroeder – MEI Alumnus – Class of 2015 “Gifts that remain dormant are realized through the hands-on application of academic concepts”. Matt Bacon - Applied Skills Teacher - Middle School
We invite you to explore all that the MEI experience has to offer students in preparation for a life of impact and influence! Some space available for 2015-16 Registration for 2016 – 17 begins in January 2016.

Now’s the time for winter vegetables Last week was really the last call for vegetable transplants to be set out in your garden for harvest this fall. Of course, you can still enjoy fast crops like many lettuces and greens for some time to come, but now is the critical time to set out transplants of the true winter vegetables that can be enjoyed from late October and November through to the end of next February. These winter hardy vegetables are mostly from Europe and are
bred to tolerate the wet and cold winter temperatures of zone 6 or higher. Timing, however, is the secret to success. The sooner you get them in, the better. The trick, particularly with brassicas, is not growing them too large, making them more susceptible to frost damage, and not planting them too late, thus not allowing their crowns or heads enough time to size up. So what to grow? Here is a list of the most readily available
winter varieties. Arugula: One of the best winter veggies, it is slow to bolt in cooler weather. It needs protection during cold spells. Beets: ‘Winterkeeper’ and ‘Lutz’ are the best winter varieties and have large round, very sweet roots. Broccoli: ‘Purple Sprouting’ and ‘Red Spear’ have small, very sweet purple heads that can be harvested in late February/ March. Cabbage: ‘January King’ is very winter

Gardening hardy and one of the finest cabbages available. Can be harvested January through February. Carrots: ‘Autumn King’ needs good drainage. Frosts makes them even sweeter. Cauliflower: ‘Galleon’ has pure white heads that grow slowly in late winter for harvest in
February/March. Celeriac: This vegetable should be growing already, but once established, it is very cold hardy. Chicory: ‘Palla Rossa’ is quite winter hardy with a little protection during cold spells. Corn Salad: This is one of the hardiest salad greens. It is crisp
and mild and its flavour improves with frost. Kale: ‘Winter Bor’ and ‘Red Bor’ are truly amazing winter garden plants that will produce leaves until spring. Kohlrabi: An ancient relative of brassicas, its flavour improves with frosts. It is quite hardy but needs some protection in severe zone 6 cold. Leeks: ‘Bandit’ is one of the great winter crops, maturing slowly. Bury them deeper for more white stems. They are a treat in late

winter. Lettuce: ‘Winter Density’ makes delicious salads all winter. ‘Rouge d’Hiver’ has beautiful, tasty red leaves. They need protection during the coldest part of winter. Onion: ‘Walla Walla’, one of the hardiest onions, if planted now will size up nicely for late spring harvesting. You can also rob a few for late winter soups. Parsnips: ‘Lancer’ and ‘Gladiator’ can still be transplanted for winter enjoyment. They become sweeter with frosts and can be harvested in late winter. Spinach : ‘Renegade’ is perfect for winter growing with a little protection in severe cold. Swiss Chard: ‘Bright Lights’ and ‘Celebration’ are very winter hardy once established. Both have amazing flavours and will beautify your garden with colourful stems. Tu r n i p s and Rutabagas: Once established, they are very winter hardy and their flavour improves with frosts. They will need protection in severe cold but even so, they are a great winter crop. There are many other winter crops, but these are the mainstream varieties that folks are really beginning to appreciate. When we get some severe cold (below -10°C) a simple mulching of root crops with sawdust or bark mulch helps greatly and a new cloth cover, called ‘N-Sulate’, can make a 10°C difference in protection. Dhaliwal helps squad power past SFU Gurneet Dhaliwal had a breakout performance on behalf of the University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team on Wednesday evening, powering the Cascades to a 2-1 exhibition victory over Simon Fraser University. Dhaliwal, a rookie forward out of Surrey, scored in the 25th and 54th minutes to stake the CIS No. 4-ranked hosts to a 2-0 lead at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. Their NCAA Div. II foes cut the deficit in half on a Sophie D’Souza goal in the late going, but UFV hung on for the win. “We saw today what a special attacking player she is,” Cascades head coach Rob Giesbrecht said of Dhaliwal. “It’s hard to put into words what she brings in the attack — it’s just those little touches, those little movements she can do. She’s a very cunning player — she’s very difficult to mark, and she finds little pockets of space to be dangerous.” The Cascades opened the game with a great scoring chance, but Clan keeper Priya Sandhu came charging out and narrowly beat UFV’s Danica Kump to a through ball. At the other end of the pitch, SFU had a couple of great looks on a goalmouth scramble following a free kick, but saw one shot glance off the crossbar and another cleared off the line by
Cascades defender Dayle Jeras. Later on, UFV keeper Kayla Klim had to be sharp to tip Christina Dickson’s rising shot over the bar. Dhaliwal notched her first goal as a Cascade off a Tristan Corneil corner, soaring to head the ball home. She made it 2-0 after halftime with a deft finish off a cross from fellow rookie Brittany Zacharuk. The Clan didn’t have many clean looks at goal after halftime, but D’Souza snuck one past Cascades backup keeper Emily Harold in the 79th minute. Krystiana Corrado picked up the assist. “I thought the girls did well,” Giesbrecht summarized. “It was good that we got everybody in, and we got to rest a few players as well, which was important. “I think there’s a lot of goals ahead for Gurneet. I was really happy with Brittney Zacharuk today, too. I thought she was fantastic on the ball. Tristan and Dayle had very strong games for us in the back, and Harman Billen played great in the midfield.” Wednesday’s game marked the end of the Cascades’ preseason schedule. They open the Canada West regular season with a twogame homestand at Abby Senior next week, taking on the Victoria Vikes on Friday, Sept. 11 (4 p.m. start) and the CIS No. 9-ranked UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday, Sept. 12 (5 p.m.).

SCHROOTS
Our Dear Dad passed away in the early morning of July 11, 2015 at the age of 95. He passed following a brief illness in Salmon Arm, BC with his family by his side. Predeceased April 29, 2014 by Mary, his wife of 65 years. Survived by sons Garry (Becky) of Winnipeg, Ron (Judy) of Mission, daughter Bonnie (Roy Peterson) of Salmon Arm, grandsons Brian (Erin), Greg (Sarah), Brad (Emily), Andrew, Bryn, Kean, 7 great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Bea. John was born in England. He was the last surviving member of his family. The family immigrated to Canada when he was 9. They lived in Ontario 5 years before moving to Mission in 1935. Along with his brother Jim they took over their uncle’s dairy farm in Silverdale, they farmed until it was sold in 1972. John met Mary at a dance at the Matsqui Hall. She had come from Alberta to pick strawberries. They were married August 1948. John and Mary retired to their new home across the highway on their hillside property on Silverdale Ave. He took pride in; the wine he made from fruit they grew, the vegetable and flower gardens, and the many rock retaining walls he built. Passing cars would stop to admire the beautiful landscape he had created. John was elected as a Councilor for the District of Mission from 1972-1982. John and Mary traveled extensively during retirement. In 2006 they decided to move to Salmon Arm when it became too difficult to maintain his large lawn and gardens. John and Mary enjoyed 5 good years at Lakeside Manor. With their health failing in 2011 they moved to a care facility. A memorial service for John and Mary will take place September 12, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Silverdale Community Centre. The family prefers a donation to Silverdale Hall instead of flowers. Arrangements entrusted to: Fischer’s Funeral Services & Crematorium Ltd., Salmon Arm 250-833-1129. Email condolences and share memories through John’s obituary at:
Born June 23, 1930 in Fernie BC to Jakob and Theresa Pfoh. He spent his younger years between Fernie and Calgary following the rodeo circuit. In 1956 he met and married Myrtle Edwards. In 1966 he brought his family to Kitimat to work at Alcan. During his time at Alcan he worked in the pot-lines he was a crane operator and trainer. He finished his work for Alcan at Kildala Beach for 5 years. Those were his best working years. Our home was a home to many kids over the years. Dad used to say that he had to count heads when he went to work, then count again when he came home because he never knew if our family would be bigger at the end of the day. Dad spent many of his years in Kitimat walking the river during steelhead season. He shared this love with his children and grandchildren. In 1999 mom and dad moved to Mission. In 2004 dad lost the love of his life when mom died. A big part of dad died that day too. Dad lived in his own home until November 2014 when he moved into a retirement home. It was with deep sorrow that we found out dad had passed away on August 20, 2015. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers and sisters and Myrtle, his wife. Left to mourn and cherish our memories are Tom (Iona), JoAnne (Butch), Rob (Michelle), Margaret (Kevin), Eddie and Ray, grandchildren; Robbie, Cindy, Troy, Allison, Michael & Terry Anderson, Mackenzie, Brett & Luke Pfoh, Danielle Clingwall, Crystal & Eli Wilson, great grandchildren; Miranda, & Kyle Anderson, Heath, Jaxx, & Kaiyah Anderson. There will be a family celebration of life in Kitimat sometime in September.

The Braun’s farmed in the Peace River area until Janet married Henry Janzen in 1940. They raised their family in LaGlace until they moved to the Fraser Valley in 1960. Janet started a new phase of her life in the early 60’s. In 1967, she married Les Simpson; they had a loving marriage until his death in 1993. With her love of fashion, beauty and dancing Janet’s life was filled with her passions, second only to her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
