Leadership lacking at Pitt airport ‘Economic opportunities being missed’ By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

No matter who runs Pitt Meadows airport, there are disgruntled business owners and tenants to satisfy. Dysfunction in leadership is depriving the communities of the full potential of what could be an economic driver, says Ron Blakely, who has had a long relationship with the airport. He has flown a plane out of YPK since 1980, had an aircraft repair shop there in the 1990s, and continues to own a hangar there. He has also lived across Ford Road from the airport since 1991. “I have observed with interest the performance, since about 1997, of three successive regimes of airport administration. It has not been a story of success, he said. In 1986, Transport Canada transferred control of YPK to Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. See Airport, 16

‘Do we want to host shelters?’ Maple Ridge to hold homelessness forum By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

Work is underway on fixing up the former Sleep Shop building and by October the 40-bed temporary shelter will open and the dismantling of the Cliff Avenue homeless camp can begin. The two are connected because unless people have a place to go,

bylaws and police cannot tell campers to move along. But what happens at the end of March when the city shelter closes is another question. Maple Ridge council and the community need to address that, says Coun. Corisa Bell. “I think we need to see more feedback on what the community wants to see. She voted against the location of the temporary shelter, not against a shelter, just putting it downtown. “It’s a really challenging, multi-

layered conversation. There’s no right answer. In Canada, we need our federal government to step up. It’s unacceptable that Canada doesn’t have a national housing strategy, she added. Bell said Mayor Nicole Read is working on holding a community forum, at which people can share their views on how to address homelessness in Maple Ridge. But the city and community has some decisions to make. “We have to decide too, as a community, if that’s what we want, is

to be a community that provides permanent shelter. Pitt Meadows won’t clean up own tree Resident told to pay for removal bill on his own By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

I

n Pitt Meadows, you don’t own a tree on the boulevard in front of your property until it becomes an expense, according to Archie Blankers, one of many residents with a tree blasted by Saturday’s storm. The 30-foot tree in his front yard, near the sidewalk, had two large, main branches that broke off in the Saturday’s high winds. Now it’s dangerously lopsided and has to come down. And the city says Blankers has to pay for its removal. The damaged tree should be the city’s responsibility, he maintains, because it is on the street side of his water shutoff – on city property. Reinforcing that point, city hall has already claimed ownership of the tree. About two years ago, Blankers approached the city to have the tree either pruned back or removed. He was worried that the tree, which was a two-metre sapling when he moved in 30 years ago, had grown into a hazard. City hall’s horticulture supervisor said “hands off,” telling him it was a healthy tree. As Blankers predicted, Saturday’s high winds tore main branches from the tree. They fell and blocked off 114B Avenue, but fortunately the only casualty was the tail light of his neighbour’s truck. He and the neighbours cut and piled the branches. City staff showed up and took away the material on the street, but left the blocks of wood that were on his lawn. Blankers called the city and asked that they remove the maimed tree entirely, saying it is now dangerous and likely to fall. City hall agreed and gave him permission to cut the tree – at his own expense. The city maintained the tree is not its responsibility. “It’s on the street side of the water cutoff, which makes it a city tree. Technically, it is

Tim Fitzgerald/THE NEWS

Archie Blankers doesn’t thinks it’s fair that the city wouldn’t let him remove the tree before, but now that it’s been damaged by last weekend’s storm, it wants him to pay to take it down. a city tree. But because they didn’t plant it, they are disavowing responsibility,” Blankers said. “They’re hiding behind a technicality.” Blankers has received quotes of $650 and $700 to have the tree removed. Complicating its removal is a B.C. Hydro box positioned at its base, which could be damaged if the tree fell. Because of the large number of problem trees after the storm, he cannot get the work done for about a week. “I don’t think I can wait much longer than that,” adding that he will have to pay for the tree removal, petition the city to change its policy, and then hope to be reimbursed.

He spoke with Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker, who invited him to attend a council meeting, to ask for the policy change. “Everyone has been nice, but nothing’s going my way,” said Blankers. Becker said he sympathizes with Blankers, but city policy can’t be applied on an ad-hoc basis – it must be the same for everyone. That policy says the city will prune and look after the trees that it plants, and it maintains a database of all of that topiary. When the city inherits trees that other parties have planted on the city right of way, it retains some ownership rights about what is done to those trees – such as cutting or prun-

ing. However, the policy said such a tree’s removal is the responsibility of the property owner. “That is the current policy. I concede, it seems a little odd,” said Becker. “I take his point.” He suggested there is potential for change, saying the new council is “looking at things with new glasses on.” Becker added that changing the policy could cost the city thousands of dollars more every year. Blankers said a “meathead” must have written the boulevard tree policy in Pitt Meadows.

City council set to question federal candidates By Phil Melnychuk pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

For the first time, the City of Maple Ridge will be involved in a federal election. On Monday, Coun. Corisa Bell’s idea of holding an all-candidates forum in the Maple Ridge Seniors Activity Centre was supported. The time and date of the forum are to be determined. Voting day for the federal election is Oct. 19. The intent is to enhance communication

between local and federal governments and to help the public sort out the differences at each level. “Whatever we say in campaign time, let’s achieve those things together,” Bell said. “Let’s all be in the same space and show the public we can work together for common issues on behalf of the people we work for.” Once the election results are in, it’s hoped that such a meeting will impel whoever’s elected to fulfill any commitments. “We really want the community to see us work together in order to find solutions

for Maple Ridge.” Bell initially bounced the idea off Mayor Nicole Read, who liked the idea. “I’m just so happy to have a mayor who supports open government and public engagement,” Bell said. All of council is expected to be there and, so far, most candidates are responding positively. Green Bell candidate Peter Tam and Liberal candidate Dan Ruimy have said they’ll attend, while Conservative Mike Murray

has to clear it with his campaign manager. She’s waiting to hear from NDP candidate Bob D’Eith. Another goal of the forum is to attract younger voters, so Bell is looking for a moderator who could fulfill that function. “We’re going to make it a big community event.” It’s going to be a positive atmosphere and help the community. “All the candidates will be there. I know they will be. How can you miss this event, it’s going to be like history setting?”

Independent makes five in race for federal riding Steve Ranta doesn’t want public to give up their right to protest B y Phil Mel nyc hu k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

A retired high school band, social studies and English teacher is the fifth candidate to seek election in Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge riding. Steve Ranta will run as an independent candidate and said many Canadians share his concerns about the direction the country is moving. “We’re being made to

fear we’re under some dire threat of attack,” by terrorists, he said Wednesday. But apart from such attacks, the only terror threats are a result of police during investigations, leading on suspects towards terrorist action. “I think it’s really wrong for Canadians to give up their right to publicly protest and their rights to privacy, when there is no real threat.”

In our own province, more than 100,000 people turn to local food banks each year.

Ranta added. Ranta said many issues that he’s concerned about now were middle of the road issues 20 years ago, but the political spectrum has shifted to the right, making such concerns seem radical. He realizes he’s an underdog in the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge riding, but said factors such as the economy could destabilize the three major parties. “So I think change is in the air. Whether there’s enough time to win the election, is unknown.” He added that trade agreements are stopping governments from dealing with the environment or finances, while “large corporations and super-rich individuals” are hoarding their money while depriving society investment, jobs and goods and services. “The politics of secrecy and fear, and the militarization of society are discouraging the involvement of an informed citizenry in the decisions which affect them, and ruining Canada’s hard-won reputation as a peacekeeper and honest broker.” Ranta has grown up in the area and lives in Maple Ridge and taught in schools here for seven years. “The opportunities I enjoyed were benefits of living in an open, prosperous, and caring society. Canadian citizens deserve to continue living in such a society.” Peter Tam (Greens), Mike Murray (Conservative), Dan Ruimy (Liberal), and Bob D’Eith (NDP) and are also running locally. Parties take voters for granted, Ranta said. He thinks it’s important for the public to show parties that they won’t get votes unless they address the fundamental issues. “I think sometimes they take their core support for granted.”

Man pinned under car in ditch Freedom Session A 28-year-old Maple Ridge man in serious condition in hospital after a car went into a water-filled ditch just before 1 a.m. Wednesday. Police don’t believe the man was an occupant in the car, but was trapped underneath it, in the 23300-block of Dogwood Avenue, near the Blacksheep Pub. “This left him in the water until the Maple Ridge Fire Department was able to use airbags to lift the car enough to get the victim out,” said RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. The driver of the car, a 29-year-old Maple Ridge man, and a female passenger have been inter-

viewed by police, who continue to investigate. The injured man was airlifted to hospital. • Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604463-6251.

Some sense Advances in technology can put lawmakers in serious catch-up mode, such as the case with drones. Some cities have developed bylaws regarding drones. And Transport Canada will presumably provide small municipalities who can’t develop meaningful legislation on this issue with some teeth when it comes out with new regulations on unmanned aircraft next year. Another advance in technology – the proliferation of cell phones – has proven deadly in B.C., where one quarter of traffic fatalities can be attributed to distracted driving. Ten years ago, distracted driving meant eating or turning around to help a child in the back seat. Legislation is in place, and enforcement campaigns frequent, in regards to distracted driving in B.C. But before drones, before cell phones, before electricity, there was something called common sense. Most would know it’s not OK to buzz a drone over a group of people doing yoga, The same for texting while driving. Such is the state of our world that laws must be put in place because many humans have lost any tenuous grip they once had on common sense. It seems the speed of technological advances in our society is only matched by the backwards slide in our ability to use our brains. – Black Press Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

Mexican Mike’s Roadkill Grill “Come by anytime, Jack. Lots of marmot in the graveyard, getting fat.”

I

t’s an email from Mike, the owner of a chuckwagon diner at the Gold Trail RV Park in Clinton, B.C. Along the Fraser Scott, my Cariboo sidekick, and I dug into Jack Emberly the “world famous” barbecue after back-country horseback riding. Wayne, our wrangler and trail guide, recommended it. “You’ll get a good feed at Mexican Mike’s Roadkill Grill.” Mike, I later learned, was born in Mexico, of Spanish and French parents. A sign in The Road Kill declares, playfully, “you kill it; we’ll grill it.” But rodent isn’t on the menu. “The marmot’s fresh this morning.” Mike’s standard welcome amuses farmers, ranchers, townsfolk, and RVers here for the buffet: “organic” garden vegetables, garlic toast, a choice of grilled salmon, steak or pork ribs, and, of course, a cowboy’s staple – baked beans, all for about $13. “This is cowpoke country,” Mike, a longtime restaurateur, told me when he moseyed over to our table with a Budweiser. “When I got here 18 years ago, I thought

Q

uestion of the week:

cowboys gotta like beans and barbecue. I was right.” A woman displaying books at a table smiled. Joei Carlton Hossack, a travel writer, was singing along to Patsy Cline on classical country radio – Willie’s Roadhouse on Sirius XM – in Nashville. “You walk by and I … fall to pieces,” they sang. Hossack, a regular fixture here, told me she was writing a book about Mike. “He’s a real character, and a great chef. Come back tomorrow for more. Most people do.” Mike dismissed the cooking courses. “Anybody can cook,” he insisted, plopping two racks of ribs on the grill. “Have these ready in few minutes,” he told Scott, who was scooping beans and casserole onto his plate. “Make sure you use the right ladles,” Mike ordered. “Okay, buddy,” Scott replied, obediently. “But, where’s the salad kept?” “Salad’s for rabbits,” Mike retorted. “This food’s for men,” he added, with a wink. I make a note of laughter at the table behind me. Mike’s persona is a crotchety Gabby Hayes, the crusty cook on a John Wayne cattle drive who rustled up grub for hungry cowboys while barking stern warnings like, “keep your gal-darn hands out of the sugar jar, you polecat, and stay outta that cookie dough.” In true form, Mike noted that I hadn’t picked up a plate and seized the moment.

Do you support the city’s request to stop funding the Salvation Army shelter? Yes: 74% – No: 26%

“What’s your partner doing over there,” he said to Scott. “Tell him to get his arse off that chair and help himself. Nobody going to serve him.” “Yes, sir, Cooky,” I replied, digging into spicy rice and a zucchini and cauliflower casserole any chef would be proud of. Mike’s visitors include Europeans in search of an authentic wild west, and Americans on route to the Yukon or Alaska who will never be without it. Their comments fill guest books that Mike was happy to share, testimonials praising a unique host and Texas style “barbecue” that reminded them of home. “This place is a kick in the pants,” wrote Gary from Washington State. “Great food and sarcasm,” noted another. “Fantastic meal, and the comedy act ain’t bad either.” Mike says he’s lived in 12 countries, and now spends half of each year in the Philippines, having acquired a fondness for the people and the country. When you pay your bill, he shows you a photo of orphaned kids there opening presents he’s delivered. It’s wrapped around a jar for tips Mike says fund the gifts and annual Christmas parties. “This year, the event is for homeless street kids,” Mike told me. Like Gabby in the movies – he’s crusty on the outside, softer in the middle. Jack Emberly is a retired teacher, local author and environmentalist.

THE NEWS/letters Let’s do the math Blame game is ‘nonsense’ Editor, The News: Re: City wants Sally Ann out (The News, Aug. 26). Correct me if my math is wrong. We, the taxpayers, are telling the Sally Ann to close the Caring Place. The municipality will provide shelter for 40 people. In reality, we will create 15 new places because we will have to deduct the 25 places that will disappear when the Sally Ann closes shop. Volunteers were asked to help to establish a task force. Out of a population of more than 76,000 people, 35 offered their services. To put it mildly: a staggering lack of interest. Or was the majority smart enough not to fall into this tender trap? Jan de Zeeuw Maple Ridge

Editor, The News: Re: City wants Sally Ann out (The News, Aug. 26). It’s a sad day that our city council and mayor pander to the opinions of public opinion. Making the Caring Place a scapegoat for the people living on Cliff Avenue, for needles in parks and such, is nonsense. Mayor Nicole Read said the community has lost faith in the Salvation Army, but did she talk to? I was never asked or polled about the Caring Place or other concerns about our city. I’ve lost faith in Maple Ridge council to come to a better solution for helping the homeless, downtrodden and those suffering from mental illnesses or addictions. At least the Caring Place is trying to

online comments

help our community. I know people who volunteer there weekly, and there is value in the Salvation Army and the work it does. Getting rid of the Caring Place won’t solve anything. Maybe the temporary shelter will work. But basing important decisions on a minority of people is faulty leadership. Listening to “popular opinion” might gain Mayor Read popularity, but the underlying issues will still remain. Eric Fehr Maple Ridge

‘Scapegoat’ Editor, The News: I think that Maple Ridge is being meanspirited with the local Salvation Army. I

volunteer there and the people there do tremendous good work all around. It is not the fault of the Salvation Army that the need for housing, social programs, or addiction programs far exceeds its capacity to manage it. One of the reasons I admire and support the work of the Salvation Army is because it looks after people that no one else will. It is obvious that Mayor Nicole Read and city council do not understand the issues of homelessness, mental health and addiction. These are complex issues and there are no quick fixes. Go after the province and health care system to provide funding and services, but don’t make the Salvation Army the scapegoat. Faye Cottingham Maple Ridge

‘I have not lost faith in Salvation Army’

‘Sally Ann did good’ Nancy McConnell · Re: ‘Had to move on Sally Ann’ (The News, Sept. 2). They will certainly need more than two support workers to provide a safe environment. Perhaps the city can meet with Fraser Health to ensure speedy access to detox, treatment facilities for those who want it, also speedy access to mental health services. The Salvation Army, I believe, did a good job and I am sure it will provide the numbers to prove it. It is extremely difficult to access services in Maple Ridge and the blame cannot be put solely on the Salvation Army.

Editor, The News: Re: ‘Unacceptable behaviour’ by city (Letters, Sept. 2). In answer to “City shelter will go downtown,” I am glad that there is finally one place where the street people can be placed – the vacant Sleep Shop.

NEW IN TOWN?

I wouldn’t want the Salvation Army to be moved, although Mayor Nicole Read said there are many who have lost faith in it. But there are so many who have not and I am one of them. If you read Bradley Christianson’s letter on Aug. 28, you will get a good

view of what the Caring Place is doing for the community. So please find places for the street people and leave the Salvation Army where it is for the convenience of those who need it. Trudi Charles Maple Ridge

Police and bylaws removed a homeless camp from a rural property on 224th Street Tuesday. That left one of the people staying on the premises wondering where he was supposed to go next? “Are we supposed to head to tent city,” said Joe Madore. He and his wife had been living in the barn on the 17-acre property at 129th Avenue for two months and was paying a lady $250 a month to do so. “As far as we were concerned, everything was legitimate,” Madore said. “We were told we could stay there in the barn. The next thing we know, we’re getting thrown out today.” Clean-up crews arrived with an excavator. At least one car was removed along with an RV and tools and garbage. According to Maple Ridge bylaws director Liz Holitzki, a woman brought her trailer on to the property, unbeknownst to the actual owners, who live in Vancouver. Over time, the woman started bringing people on to the site, but she had no right to be on the property, Holitzki added. If it wasn’t for complaints from the neighbours about the mess and about people and coming and going from the premises, bylaws wouldn’t have known. “We spent two days cleaning the property up,” said Holitzki. She said the owner agreed to the city’s cleanup action and accepts the cost will be added on to the yearly property taxes. The city also will put gates blocking vehicle access to the driveway, at the owner’s expense. “It’s the only way to keep that sort of thing from happening.” The people living on the property were

erty and said it’s not a common occurrence in Maple Ridge. “The owners were quite shocked that anybody would just go on their property and live

there.” Holitzki said staff were trying to give people ideas about where to go, but said there are not many options.

City to study social services Shelter from front

But that doesn’t mean Maple Ridge opposes other services the Salvation Army offers, such as its community meal program, its back-toschool backpack program or the emergency food hamper program, Bell added. “We, as a council, have no desire to end any of the programs the Salvation Army offers.” And if those services are no longer offered by the Salvation Army, she said another agency would likely take on those programs. Bell said council, in the next six months, has to focus on what happens when the temporary city shelter on Lougheed Highway closes. Former mayor Ernie Daykin has had a closeup view of the Cliff Avenue camp and Salvation Army Caring Place from across the highway at Maple Towers, run by Baptist Housing, which he manages. He thinks the Caring Place is providing

something the community needs and closing it is not going to solve the problem. “If I were still mayor, what would I do?” In absence of having all the information for last nine months, Daykin says he wouldn’t have allowed the Cliff Avenue camp to form. But, “maybe it did bring it to head and maybe a year from now I’ll say – these guys are brilliant.” The future is more definite for Coun. Kiersten Duncan. Once council hears back from B.C. Housing on council’s request to cut funding to Salvation Army shelter, “that will help us make a decision.” The city wants to connect people on Cliff Avenue with the services they need. Her idea is to take the funding that B.C. Housing provides to the Salvation Army and give it to another agency that can provide a broader range of services. The city wouldn’t call

for an end to funding the Salvation Army without a backup plan, she added. Duncan said the Salvation Army does good work, but it can’t deal Duncan with the needs of the mentally ill and the drug addicted. “We need a shelter that is very low barrier. There are a lot of people with a number of mental health issues and severe addiction issues. Given their [the Salvation Army] model, they’re unable to support a lot of the residents we have on the streets right now. “A more broad level of service is the best way to put it. It’s not just about people that are hungry. They service that population well,” Duncan said. “But with regards to mental health and severe addiction, their program does not work for everyone.” Duncan expects the

study on social services offered in Maple Ridge will help determine what kind of service provider could operate a permanent emergency shelter and supportive housing centre in Maple Ridge. A contract for that study, up to $75,000, will be announced soon. The agency that will operate the temporary shelter on Lougheed Highway hasn’t been officially announced either, although RainCity Housing and Support Society of Vancouver recently has advertised for shelter workers for a city shelter in Maple Ridge. Meanwhile, the contract for the social media component of the Maple Ridge Resilience Initiative, formerly known as the homelessness task force, has been issued to the Laura Balance Media Group.

Read 1,000 stories before Kindergarten Plan to promote early literacy newsroom@mapleridgenews.com

Saying “It’s never too early to give your child a head start on reading,” the Fraser Valley Regional Library is launching an innovative early literacy program for preschoolers this fall. The program, “1000 Stories Before Kindergarten,” is self-paced and will help parents teach their children early literacy skills in the first years of life. The program will encourage families to read 1,000 books with their preschooler before they

enter Kindergarten. The library system will provide each child with a free reading log to track stories read. Registration is under way at all 25 FVRL locations, including Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The 1,000 Stories program is inspired by similar ones that have achieved success in other North American libraries. They all stress the value of building literacy skills at young ages. Both the Canadian Paediatric Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics advise parents to read aloud to babies. Activities like reading, talking and

singing encourage brain development and provide positive, nurturing experiences between parent and child, says the society.

“Children’s librarians and teachers know how important it is to read to kids from a very young age. It can have a huge impact on their future

“ We provide care, respect and dignity in your time of need”

success at school,” said FVRL librarian Frances Thomson. “Once they reach Kindergarten, these kids will have bigger vo-

cabularies, longer attention spans and a greater awareness of the world around them.” While the idea of reading 1,000 stories may

seem daunting at first, the program makes reading fun and easy for parents and children. The illustrated log book lets parents track their progress and offers many helpful tips on how to read, write, talk, sing and play with their child.

It’s back to school again on Tuesday, and local students will find new principals and vice-principals at several schools. Astrid Kirves, who was principal of Fairview elementary, has retired. She will be replaced by Cathie Watkins, who was previously in a viceprincipal role at Maple Ridge secondary. There are no other principal moves at the elementary level, but the district does has several vice-principal changes: • Lisa Kania, who had been a teacher, is stepping into the role of acting vp at Albion; • Jen Beveridge, formerly in an acting vp role at Albion, is moving to a vp role at Golden Ears; • Lee Magis will be the acting vp at Hammond; • Jennifer Fuhrman (formerly in a vp role at Pitt Meadows secondary) will be the new vp at Kanaka Creek elementary; • Laureen Hickey (formerly an acting vp at Kanaka Creek) is joining Yennadon as the new vp, replacing the retired Leslie Ramsay. At the secondary level, Steve Wiebe is replacing Alan Millar as principal of alternate education, but will maintain his trades and partnerships responsibilities. So the position is now principal, alternate education and trades and partnerships. Millar is joining the vp team at Maple Ridge secondary, and Cheryl Schwarz is stepping into an acting vp role at Pitt Meadows secondary. Wes Reamsbottom (Pitt Meadows elementary) and Jeff Curwen (Thomas Haney secondary) will no longer be in acting vp roles at these schools – they will assume the full vp roles.

because they are tenants at YPK, and fear repercussions. “There’s a high level of animosity around the airport,” Blakely said. There is a movement to begin an airport business owners association, so tenants have a unified voice. YPK business owners have been requesting meetings with Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker. Blakely would also like to see the City of Pitt Meadows in sole control of the airport. “It would be a lot simpler. The duties of that group would be obvious, and the responsibilities, as well.” Pitt Meadows residents should decide the future of the airport, since it is

long-range planning, lack of transparency, spot zoning, lack of written operating and policy manuals, and “appalling relations” with tenants and neighbours. “Lease holders are the sole source of income for the airport, and it makes sense to treat them with respect, and not give them an unnecessary hard time,” he said. Although Blakely speaks only for himself, his comments were echoed by airport business owners who wished to remain anonymous,

The two cities are members of the Pitt Meadows Airport Society, a nonprofit volunteer organization that operates the airport. It was supposed to be a recipe for success. “Because the airport is publicly owned by the municipalities, the public has a high expectation for efficiency and financial performance and especially for transparency and accountability. Performance has been far below the public expectation,” Blakely adds. He criticizes the group’s

entirely within their city, he asserts. He has flown across the country and back five times in his 1947 Luscombe, and makes a point of stopping at small airports like Pitt Meadows – they’re often close to town, and have a flying club that welcomes visitors. “In talking to the people, the common factor in successful airports is that they’re really tied into the community,” he said. “It should be what the community wants. The biggest deficiency has been the failure to evolve a vision for the future of the airport.” That’s the opinion of Becker. He has not given up on the idea of Pitt Meadows being the sole member of the airport society, even though Maple Ridge

Mayor Nicole Read said it’s not going to happen. On July 29, the day before the airport society’s AGM, Pitt Meadows council shocked Read and her council with a request that Maple Ridge leave the society. “… We have no intention of divesting ourselves in our interest in our joint asset,” Read responded in a letter. That’s not the end of the conversation. The issue caused the airport society’s AGM to be recessed until Oct. 29. City staff have been on holidays and both councils on hiatus, but Becker will soon seek a conversation about control of the airport. It may be him and Read and respective city administrators, or sub committees of councils. “We cannot let this sit in the middle of the road,” said Becker. He wasn’t surprised by Maple Ridge’s reaction. But he points out Pitt Meadows gets all of the tax revenue from the airport businesses, and Pitt council deals with issues arising from “the interface with the community and the airport,” such as resident worries about increased air traffic, noise and safety. He asks what value Maple Ridge’s involvement adds to the society. Becker also believes that a future vision of the airport is critical to “take it to a new level.” Vancouver International Airport is pushing out many of its smaller tenants, and that is creating an economic opportunity for other airports. “They are exactly the kinds of businesses we would welcome in Pitt Meadows,” he said. Becker also said he knew of problems at the airport in his capacity as a local lawyer, and they were coming before council in 2002, when he was first elected. “I’m acutely aware of the issues at the airport,” he said. Those issues have changed over time, from financial shortfalls to runway expansion, but there are always challenges. However, Dale Floyd at Coast Dog Aviation is an entrepreneur whose business has flourished in the environment of the Pitt Meadows airport, and from his perspective the facility is well run. “I’m very happy with it, everything is going good,” he said. “We’re trying hard to make it a professional airport.”

REAL ESTATE IN MAPLE RIDGE & PITT MEADOWS

Hot market driving up housing prices By Kevin Gillies

T

he hot housing market in the Lower Mainland continues to fuel housing price increases in the Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge markets. Figures released this week by the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver show that benchmark prices for local houses, townhomes, and condominiums have increased across the board. The benchmark price for a single-family detached home in Maple Ridge rose 12.2 per cent over August 2014’s benchmark price to $518,400. In Pitt Meadows the benchmark price for a single-family detached home rose 15.9 per cent over August 2014’s benchmark price to $572,900. “There was no summer lull in our market this year. Home buyers have been working with their realtors throughout the summer months, Darcy McLeod, REBGV president, said in reference to the Lower Mainland market as a whole. “They’re motivated, but they’re competing for a smaller supply of homes for sale than is typical for this time of year — that’s the dynamic driving our market right now. Over that same one-year period, the benchmark price for a Maple Ridge townhouse rose 6.3 per cent to $289,600; the benchmark price for a Pitt Meadows townhouse rose 12.7 per cent to $367,700. Condominium benchmark prices rose similarly — 3.2 per cent to $169,300 in Maple Ridge and 8.3 per cent to $252,600 in Pitt Meadows. The MLS Home Price Index composite benchmark price for all residential properties in the Metro Vancouver region is currently $708,500 — a 12 per cent increase compared to August 2014. The REBGV also reports that last month’s sales for the region were 27.9 per cent above the 10-year sales average for the month. The board says residential property sales in Metro Vancouver reached 3,362 on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in August 2015 —a 21.3 per cent increase compared to the 2,771 sales recorded in August 2014, and

a decrease of 15.5 per cent compared to the 3,978 sales in July 2015. McLeod says new listings for detached, attached and apartment properties in Metro Vancouver totaled 4,281 in August — an 8.7 per cent increase compared to the 3,940 new listings reported in August 2014. Locally, the number of listings last month was virtually the same as August 2014. But it is noteworthy that 117 per cent of the 54 attached-home (townhouse) listings sold, while 87 per cent of the 174 detached, singlefamily home listings sold. In both July and August of this year, there was 174 listing of detached, single-family

he says. The sales-to-active-listings ratio in August was 30.9 per cent; the sixth consecutive month this ratio has been above 30 per cent in Metro Vancouver. Other areas covered by the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver include: Whistler, Sunshine Coast, Squamish, West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Richmond, Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, New Westminster and South Delta. homes in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows combined. But attached-home listings for RidgeMeadows plummeted 45 per cent from 99 in July to just 54 in August. McLeod says the total number of properties currently listed for sale on the region’s MLS is 10,897, a 26.2 per cent decline compared to August 2014 and a 5.3 per cent decline compared to July 2015. The inventory shortage, he says, is driving the region’s hot housing market. “Those who have a sound buying strategy and an understanding of current price trends are having the most success in today’s market,

Ridge team battles adversity at nationals Boats damaged in Thunder Bay left them scrambling for replacements B y T i m Fi t z g e r a l d sports@mapleridgenews.com

One of the strongest showings ever by the Ridge Canoe Kayak Club at the national championships in Ottawa almost never happened. An accident to the club’s trailer, just outside Thunder Bay, Ont., meant members lost all their team boats and probably any chance of competing in a large number of events at the nationals. “That left us scrambling and having to run around and borrow boats from the other clubs,” said RCKC head coach Peter Majewski. “But some clubs in eastern Ontario stepped in and gave us some boats to use and we ended up with two golds.” Brian Malfesi helped lead the way for the club with four medals as more than 1,200 of Canada’s best paddlers converged in Ottawa for this five day event, ending Aug. 29. Malfesi won a gold medal alongside teammate Sebastian Sorescu in the junior K2 200 metre final. The coach said it was an incredible feat considering most of his athletes we thrown into boats they had never used before and weren’t necessarily set up for their height. He said that the team could win medals under those circumstances speaks to the talent and the dedication of the athletes. “They acted so professionally. They did an amazing job considering the stress they were under,” said Majewski, a former member of the Polish national team. “I’m very proud of them.” Malfesi grabbed a silver in the senior K1 500 m and the senior K1 1,000 m. He rounded out his medal count with a silver alongside teammate Alex Brent in the ju-

Malfesi’s four-medal performance in Ottawa on the Rideau Canal came on the heels competing at the world championships in Milan, Italy where he finished a respectable 15th in the K2 1,000 m. The Ridge Canoe Kayak Club team got off to strong start to the week when Matthew Koehler pulled away from the competition early and dominated on his way to gold in the under-17 men’s K-1 6,000 m final, winning by almost 10 seconds. Koehler recently won five gold medals and nine overall at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games in Woods Buffalo, Alta. Sorescu’s national gold will go alongside the 10 medals he won at the Western Can-

ada Summer Games, which included two first place finishes and five silver medals. Justin Won finished 14th and Tyler Demidoff was 20th in the u-17 men’s K-1 6,000 m. Koehler and Won then teamed up to win a silver in the u-17 K2 1,000 m final. Brent capped off a strong summer finishing fourth in the u-19 K4 1000 m along with teammates Koehler, Won and Sorescu. He finished fifth in the u-19 1,000 m, and eighth in the K2 1,000 m with Koehler. Brent also recently represented Canada at the junior world championships in Portugal. The canoe team of Keiffer Johnson and Sean McBeath had a strong week by win-

ning silver in the junior men’s C2 1,000 m final and placing fifth in the 200 m event. On the women’s side, Tessa Nagai and Julianna Won had a busy week, placing sixth in the junior K2 1,000 m, ninth in the senior K2 200 m, sixth in the junior K2 500 m and fourth in the junior K4 500 m with Lauryn Cheung and Meghan Cheung. Melody Oh had a strong race in the women’s C1 6,000 m race, finishing 19th. Sheung and Won also finished 9th in the u-19 K2 500 m. Members of the Ridge Canoe Kayak Club are back preparing to host the Pacific Cup and B.C. bantam championships at Whonnock Lake on Sept. 13. • For more information, visit www.rckc.ca.

covers more than 70 different divisions. Stec said the Mission event is one of the best venues for spectators. The track, as far as viewing, is really excellent, because if you are up at the top of the grandstand, you can see 80 per cent of the track, which for a road course, is kind of unique.” • For more information visit missionraceway.com.

Dickson in the hunt for Mann Cup Named playoff MVP for Lakers

BART R. FINDLAY

sports@mapleridgenews.com

Former Maple Ridge Burrards’ sniper Curtis ‘Superman’ Dickson’s quest to win his first Mann Cup is on track after the high-scoring forward led his new team to the Ontario’s Major Series League championship Monday night. Dickson and the Peterborough Lakers went on the road and won Game 7 over the two-time defending Mann Cup champion Six Nations Chiefs, 6-5. Dickson was voted winner of the Johnny ‘Shooter’ Davis Award winner as the Most Valuable Player of the 2015 MSL playoffs. He was the unanimous choice among a panel of five media members covering the playoffs “This is unbelievable, Dickson was quoted after the win. “This will be my first Mann Cup. I’ve never been part of something like this series. It was epic. Getting out 2-0, going down 3-2 and coming back to win. The defensive

Being able to pull it out here and to head west for the Mann Cup is pretty special. The Lakers won the series 4-3 over the Six Nations Chiefs, thanks in large part to the play of Dickson, who had three assists in game seven and finished the playoffs with 24 goals and 25 assists for 49 points in 11 playoff games. This year’s final marked the eighth time

the Lakers and Chiefs have met in the playoffs and third time in the final, all in the past four years. Dickson is hoping to lead the Lakers to their sixth Mann Cup title in the last 12 years. The Shamrocks are the last Western Lacrosse Association team to win the Mann Cup, hoisting the trophy in 2005 after beating Peterborough 4-2. The Shamrocks dropped the last two

Mann Cups to the Six Nation Chiefs, losing at home in six games in 2013 and again in six games in 2014. The Shamrocks went 8-0 in the 2015 playoffs. The best-of-seven finale starts Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. in Victoria, with games also scheduled for Saturday, Monday, Tuesday and, if necessary, Sept. 9, 11 and 12. • You can live stream the games at www. wlalacrosse.com/manncup.

OBITUARIES

OBITUARIES

Lois Diane Brooks (Street) Lois was born on January 26, 1954 in New Westminster, BC. She was the second of four daughters to Art and Sheila Street (both pre deceased). Growing up she was always the tomboy. She loved motorcycles and was truly gifted in art and writing. When there was a graduation, wedding, funeral, birthday or any special occasion she always wrote the most beautiful poem. Her words were always from her heart. She met Charlie when she was about 15. At 19 they married and had their first child Clayton (pre deceased 2000). When he was 11 they moved to Princeton and Lois said “why are we moving there, all you do in Princeton is get gas and ice cream”! They lived there for many years and added their daughter Chara and sons Josh and Riley to the family. Living on 66 acres on the mountain visiting Lois’ house was always a treat and a good reason to gain weight as she was an amazing cook and loved to bake. Fresh white pumpkin pies, peanut butter cookies and the best banana blueberry bread on earth just to name a few. She loved to spoil everyone and was the most giving person we ever knew. She never asked for anything in return. Her nieces and nephews were a testament to her many gifts as were we all. Being a Mom was her most important job in life and losing her first born was something she never recovered from. But, she persevered and with her faith and her family kept on going. Lois did have the privilege of having Chara and her son Jackson live with them and she sure loved that little guy. Clay left behind a son Keaton and one week to the day after her passing Keaton and Hayley gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Emmie. Lois spent her summers at “the lake” in Okanagan Falls with family and friends. She would usually get there when school got out and go home when school went back. The family moved to Penticton in 2004 which made it that much easier to go back and forth. Lois loved flowers and plants and her home and the lake were always adorned with them. When our parents moved to Penticton and became ill Lois was always there for them. Making meals, because the food there was not up to standards, visiting and just doing what she did best… taking care. We are forever grateful for that. In May 2013 Lois was diagnosed with Lung, brain and bone cancer and was given 6 months maybe a year or so if she did treatments. The news was shocking. Lois being the fighter that she was fought another battle in her life. She fought with all the strength she had and set an amazing example of what faith, family and being strong truly meant. She would always say, “I’m OK, don’t worry about me”. Sadly after checking into the hospice into Penticton to help ease the pain she had to let go of her fight on July 22, 2015. As she wished, her family was at her home having dinner together when she went to sleep. With our hearts empty and missing our daily calls from her we had to say our goodbyes. It’s still surreal. Lois’ wishes were to not have a memorial but instead just to “hold our families close and enjoy each and every day.” Every time we have a family dinner she will have a place there. Rest in paradise with our Mom and Dad and your son Clay. Until we meet again…Your family
