CAMERON ORR / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

The end for Kitimat’s traditional community Christmas tree arrived quickly last week when it was taken down to provide space for services and a road leading to a planned commercial center.

Kitimat saws down iconic Christmas tree By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - With the blessing of the Gyro Club, Kitimat Council has given support in principle to an outdoor seating and plaza centre that would also house a community Christmas tree. That comes as the Gyros came to accept the Christmas tree, as it is, would not find a new home. The tree came to an end Friday morning when crews cut it down. The tree was in the path of the installation of utilities and a road to service the Haisla Town Centre, while there was little hope of a successful transplant of the tree. At a sizeable price tag, it

was ultimately deemed not worth the risk. Even so, the decision didn’t come arbitrarily, and Kerkhoff Construction, developing the site for the Haisla, the Gyros and the District of Kitimat have had meetings to work out how best to develop the community’s Christmas tree legacy moving forward. Leonard Kerkhoff for Kerkhoff Construction says that the Haisla have developed the concept designs for the proposed plaza, with consultation with the District of Kitimat. An agreement was made that the tree could be torn down on the understanding that a new tree would be installed at the proposed park. “A new tree will be in place for this year’s Christmas, with

lights on the tree,” said Kerkhoff. Kitimat Council, at their August 24 Committee of the Whole meeting, approved in principle the plaza concept, which would see seating, a stage and the community Christmas tree. While the tree may be in place by 2015’s holiday, the overall installation of a plaza won’t happen immediately but will be submitted with the District of Kitimat’s 2016 budget. Overall the cost estimate for the development is over $200,000 but, to some extent at least, there will be partnerships with the Haisla in putting it together. Gyro Club member Chris Rigoni gave councillors the history of the tree, and said the promise

of a plaza and new tree is effectively which swung the club’s opinion on whether they would push for the tree to remain where it was. With the new plans on paper they could accept the loss of the original tree. With that endorsement from the Gyro Club councillors welcomed the proposed plan. “I was very pleased that the Gyro Club basically, with a long history with the Christmas Tree... is endorsing, is proactive and is already planning for this future Christmas Tree plaza,” said Councillor Rob Goffinet. Larry Walker meanwhile emphasized that he wants to see the joint participation of the District with the Haisla to pay for the new plan.

Alaskans announce ferry service schedule cut for 2016 By Shaun Thomas

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - The State of Alaska released its Alaska Marine Highway schedule and Prince Rupert will see a 50 per cent drop in traffic come summer. The MV Taku, which has served Prince Rupert in the past, will be out of service for the entire fiscal year. “As a result of the MV Taku entering layup status for the entire operating year, Prince Rupert sailings have been reduced from four days per week to two days per week,” explained Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities communications

officer Jeremy Woodrow. “Due to budget cuts every community that is served by the AMHS will see a reduction in service in one form or another. The priority of AMHS is not to cut off any one community from ferry service entirely and create a schedule that serves the most people in as many communities as possible within the budget that is provided each operating year.” While the number of sailings has been cut down to two per week, Woodrow said he doesn’t anticipate a significant reduction in the number of passengers coming through Prince

Rupert. “Our data has shown that the reduced frequency has not resulted in a reduction of ridership. The Matanuska, being the larger of the two vessels, has more than the capacity to fulfill the traffic demand to/ from Prince Rupert,” he said. Tourism Prince Rupert chair Scott Farwell said the service reductions were anticipated but will nonethless have an impact on the North Coast. “It’s not good news, that’s for sure, but we did know it was coming,” he said. “Any time there is a reduction in service, that is a cause for concern.”

As for the winter months, the schedule calls for a weekly Tuesday arrival at the Alaska Marine Highway terminal, with the departure

scheduled three hours later. This is in contrast to the five hour layover experienced last winter. In most cases, the vessel arrives very early Tues-

day morning. For example, the latest the ship arrives in and departs from Prince Rupert is at 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., respectively.

The schedule is altered slightly in March when a vessel arrives on Monday and spends four hours in town on March 7 and 14.

Driver heavily fined By Margaret Speirs

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - An excessive speeder has been punished with a heavy fine and restrictions on driving for a year. John William Arthur Symes was ordered to pay a $1,500 fine and a $250 victim fine surcharge by August 1, 2016 in Terrace provincial court Aug. 25. He is also on probation with conditions for 12 months, one of which is that he’s not allowed to drive a motorcycle. “This is the highest fine that has been handed out for Excessive Speed in the area,” said Cpl. Philip Crack of the West Pacific Region Traffic Services, also known as the highway patrol. “The traffic unit is satisfied with the decision as it is a little over three times the normal ticket for the higher level of excessive speed, which is $483. The driver also lost his vehicle for a minimum of seven days.

“It has been noted that the number of excessive speeding files generated to date by the unit is approximately 20 per cent higher than the total for all of last year. With this decision, we are hoping that people will take the opportunity to check their speeds and avoid a substantial penalty or worse.” On June 21, 2015, around 6 p.m., Const. David Desa of the West Pacific Region Traffic Services Unit, was patrolling on Hwy 37 South and caught a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 travelling at 225 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone approximately five kilometres south of Terrace, B.C., said police at that time. “With the speed the driver was travelling, he would not have been able to react to anything that happened in front of him and could easily have been involved in a serious collision,” said Desa at the time. According to online details from WIkipedia, the top speed of a Suzuki GSX-R1000 is 288 km/h.

Nurses cycling to Prince George in support of Hope Air “I learned of Hope Air when I was a student, actually,” said Pond. “When I was in the nursing club at UNBC, they were one of the charities that we wanted to do fundraising for on our long list of [candidates] and we never got to them. So, I’ve probably been wanting to fundraise for five or six years, I just haven’t had the opportunity until now.” Pond and Miller are both registered nurses working in northern B.C. — Pond in Fort St. John and Miller in Burns Lake — and the two met when Pond was assigned to work in Burns Lake for six months. Through their jobs, the duo have met countless families and specifically, children, who need funds to reach a more urban destination to receive specialized care. “We see children until they’re about 18 months old and then again in kindergarten. I’ve come across many children who have illnesses that require them to travel to Vancouver or Edmonton and they can’t afford it. They express how the cost is really hard on the family and their financial budget and it’s really nice when you hear those parents come back two or six months later and they’ve used Hope Air to get down to their appointments. It just made a world of difference in their life,” said Pond.

PRINCE RUPERT - Most motorists glancing at the distance sign to Terrace and Prince George might see the 715 kilometres to the latter city and groan, settling in for a long journey. But for Mikaela Pond and Jennifer Miller, who don’t even have motors on their chosen vehicles of transport, that number represents a challenge and an opportunity. Pond, who grew up in Rupert before leaving for post-secondary in Prince George, is one half of the pair cycling all the way from the North Coast to Prince George and the two are doing it in just six days from Aug. 30 to Sept. 4. “Basically, they’re just two places really close to my heart,” said Pond, who has lived extensively in both cities, on the day before she set out. Pond and Miller are putting themselves through the gruelling, but scenic trip to raise money for Hope Air, a national charity that provides families in financial need with free air travel to their appointments in larger urban centres for specialized medical care not available locally. Their goal is $6,000, enough funds for 24 flights that Hope Air can provide for northern B.C.

“I thought the trip [from Rupert to Prince George] really represents that distance that people have to travel, so we called it ‘Riding the Bridge to Healthcare’ because essentially that’s what I feel like we’re doing.” Pond and Miller have a spotter vehicle riding along with them which displays a sign notifying passing vehicles of the Hope Air cause and to slow for the cyclists. They’ll also have a trailer carrying food, equipment and supplies for the near-week-long trip. In getting prepared for the ride, Pond and Miller both rode around Fort St. John and Burns Lake, respectively, sometimes on a stationary bike, sometimes on a real one. “I’ve been riding the farm roads around Fort St. John and Fort Nelson – whenever I work up there I bring my bike and go for a ride,” said Pond. The cyclists have broken up their journey into six parts, one for each day. On Aug. 30, the pair rode from Prince Rupert to Terrace, starting their trek at 7:30 a.m. On Aug. 31, they rode from Terrace to New Hazelton, on Sept. 1, they travelled from New Hazelton to Smithers, on Sept. 2 they’re biking from Smithers to Burns Lake, on Sept. 3, they’ll head from Burns Lake to Vanderhoof and on the last day, they’ll cross the fin-

KITIMAT — Approximately $500 was raised by these kids in a lemonade-baked goodscrafts sale, all for the purpose of supporting a friend’s mission to El Salvador to bring medical supplies and provide services.

Fringe play touches on local issues VANCOUVER - A multimedia stage play being performed in Vancouver looks to put in focus the themes of pipeline development and class conflicts. Kitimat-raised graduate of a Fine Arts degree from Simon Fraser University Valerie Christiansen is directing a show to be performed at the Fringe Festival under the name Pipef@%!. “It’s definitely a show inspired by the Enbridge pipeline, and it came to be three years ago now, when I had the privilege of speaking with some locals and [with] Gerald Amos,” said Christiansen. “His interview really fuelled a lot of the work that we’re doing now.” It’s a multimedia piece, incorporating live show, pre-recorded segments and special effects. “We’re basically playing with how film has a relationship with theatre as well.” There is an overarching narrative in the piece too, which brings in a number of stories that weave in and out of each other, she said. It’s a fairly abstract show in some senses, Christiansen noting some of the “characters are poetic devices.”

She said ultimately the show is about class and hierarchy. “It is a show where we’ve taken the Tennessee Williams play The Strangest Kind of Romance and it was in that play [a] little man is of the working class and it really reminded me of the people I grew up with,” she said. Remaining connected to her hometown is important to her, she says, and this is a way she’s trying to give back to the community. “I did the show because I believe where I grew up was a great privilege and I want to take care of that as much as possible and even though I live in Vancouver I still have ties to Kitimat. I don’t forget where I came from,” she said. The show is being produced under the theatre company The Uninvited Guests. Part of the Vancouver Fringe Festival, a major gathering of independently made theatre shows, Pipef@%! will be shown at the Firehall Arts Centre, itself entirely appropriate to the production, said Christiansen. “What a better place than the East Side because it’s a great com-

Realtors shift responsibilities TERRACE - Sheila Love is leaving direct real estate sales to become the managing broker of the Terrace office of Remax Coast Mountains, an opening made possible by the move to Prince Rupert from Terrace of John Evans to become the broker manager of the Remax Coast Moun-tains office in that city. “Prince Rupert has become very busy,” explained Evans of the decision to take a more active role there. Remax Coast Mountains has owned the Prince Rupert office since 2009 and itself dates back to 1991 when Evans and his father, Dick Evans, opened an office in Terrace. Sheila Love, left, has become the broker manager of the Terrace Remax Coast Mountains office, allowing John Evans to concentrate on being the broker manager of the company’s Prince Rupert office. in 1994, a year after obtaining her licence. The Prince Rupert office has four realtors and two assistants while

there are 15 people working at the Terrace office. Remax Coast Mountains has also just com-

Another candidate joins the race TERRACE - The Christian Heritage Party has chosen a pro-life resident of Tumbler Ridge to be its Skeena - Bulkley Valley candidate in the Oct. 19 federal election. Donald Spratt was unopposed at a nominating meeting held Aug. 24 in Smithers. Spratt “is a strong moral and fiscal conservative who unapologetically places historic Canadian founding constitutional principles above the political correctness of the progressive camp that make up the three major parties,” said party leader Rod Taylor in a release.

Over the years Spratt has established himself as a strong pro-life presence in protesting Canada’s move to legalize abortions. It has resulted in his arrest several times in the last decade for being inside a “bubble zone” around abortion clinics. The term “bubble zone” stems from legislation passed in 1995 which bans people from protesting within 50 meters of an abortion facility. On one of the occasions, Spratt and fellow pro-life activist Cissy von Dehn were also

charged with “sidewalk interference.” The pair based their defence on the constitutional rights of freedom of religion and freedom of speech in saying they were only passing out copies of the bubble zone legislation. But the B.C. Court of Appeal in 2013 found against Spratt and von Dehn, ruling that their behaviour constituted an act of protest carried out within the bubble zone. Party leader Rod Taylor, from Telkwa, is running in an Ottawa riding.

Notice is hereby given that, pursuant to Section 60(2) of the Transportation Act, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has received an application to permanently close a portion of old highway, Right of Way Plan 1558, within the Part Remainder of District Lot 6639, District Lot 5661, Part Remainder District Lot 1914, and Part Remainder District Lot 986, Range 5, Coast District, (excluding the bed of Kleanza Creek). All of this proposed road closure is within Kleanza Creek Park and will be consolidated with Kleanza Creek Park and will fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Environment. The right of way proposed for closure is a portion of the old highway that is used as a park access road within DL 986 and overgrown and unused within DLs 6639, 5661, 1914. A plan showing the proposed road closure may be viewed at the Ministry’s Skeena District office at 4825 Keith Avenue, Terrace, B.C., V8G 1K7 during the office hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m). Any person(s) wanting to provide comments of support or objection to this application for road closure should indicate their concerns in writing to the aforementioned address or via e-mail to Rena.Gibson@gov.bc.ca no later than September 11, 2015. For more information about this closure, please contact Senior District Development Technician Rena Gibson Protzner, Skeena District Phone: 250 615-3965 E-mail: Rena.Gibson@gov.bc.ca

Good hearing but trouble with conversation? A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. What a lot of people don’t know is that this may be caused by damage to the so-called motor or amplifier function of special cells in the ear. A new type of hearing aid can help balance this out. A great many people have difficulty hearing others clearly on a daily basis. Bad acoustics, unclear pronunciation, background noise and music often make it challenging to catch what people say. This results in them having to repeatedly ask questions, straining to hear and perhaps increasingly avoiding discussions in large groups. As mentioned earlier, this may be caused by malfunctions in special cells in the ear. According to a theory proposed by hearing researchers, “motor cells” are a type of hair cell responsible for amplifying quiet sounds. They vibrate up to 20,000 times per second. If these hair cells do not work properly then quiet sounds are no longer naturally

good solution for most people. This improvement in hearing can be achieved for some clients through the new Phonak Audéo V’s hearing aids. This cutting-edge hearing technology comes in a miniature casing that can significantly enhance the user’s ability to hear speech in company. The hearing aids attune to the person you are speaking to and can also recognize if ambient noise increases in the background. Connect Hearing is currently looking to improve hearing for people who experience these challenges and want to try this new technology. We are particularly interested in candidates who have trouble hearing speech in amplified in the ear and loud sounds the situations discussed above and can benefit from a demonstration no longer dampened. to see whether they notice an This leads to more difficulty in improvement. hearing what is said in a lot of situations. The trailer court in Port Edward was shut down on Aug. 31.

Owners shut down Port Edward trailer court, evict tenants By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PORT EDWARD - Following a lengthy dispute between tenants and property owner Stonecliff Properties, the Port Edward trailer court was to be shut down on Aug. 31. “Stonecliff continues to work with the tenants and the Residential Tenancy Board and expects that everyone will provide full and peaceful vacant possession and occupation of all sites as required by law on Aug. 31, 2015. It should be noted that while Stonecliff can retain the services of a bailiff (by filing its orders of possession with the BC Supreme Court), this is seen as a last resort for only those tenants who refuse to obey the law,” read a statement from company solicitor Michael Gemmiti. “Stonecliff did not intend or foresee this unfortunate result when it purchased the park in 2013.” Stonecliff gave notice of its intention to shut down the park on Aug. 22, 2014, claiming the property was losing between $10,000

and $15,000 per month. While Stonecliff had “underwent considerable expense to develop a plan to renovate the park with minimal interruption”, those plans were met with staunch opposition from tenants. Members of the Port Edward Manufactured Home Owners Association said demands to move their private property to facilitate the work, as well as issues with the landlord taking rent payments and plans to restrict access to the site, were unacceptable. As well, tenants alleged harassment regarding rent was causing significant stress. When Stonecliff announced its plans to shut down the trailer court, citing an inability to repair critical infrastructure, relations between the two groups were even further stressed, with several tenants challenging the eviction notice.

“In three separate hearings, involving a joined action application (multiple tenants) and two separate applications, the RTB dismissed every application, upheld the Michael Gemmiti 12-month notice and awarded orders of possession to the Landlord,” explained Gemmiti. “Every tenant was aware of the consequences of not allowing the required repairs so that Stonecliff could provide proper health and safety standards and meet community by-laws for the benefit of the existing and future tenants. Each tenant received due process under the law. There are no further appeals that can be made.” Stonecliff now plans to begin decommissioning of the site quickly and notes that “deteriorated infrastructure and debris” will begin to be removed after Aug. 31.

“Stonecliff did not intend or foresee this unfortunate result.”

DP World made their intentions to purchase the facility for $580 million known in April of this year. Important dates in labour history * Labour Day was first celebrated in Canada in 1882 but was not recognized by the federal government as a holiday until 1894. * The Canadian Labour Day can trace its roots back to 1872 when the Toronto Typographical Union

went on strike for a nine-hour working day. * Unemployment insurance was not introduced until 1940 and Canada was the last industrialized nation to do so. * The 1919 Winnipeg General

Strike lasted six weeks and resulted in two people being killed. Workers wanted higher wages and fewer working hours. * Labour Day may be celebrated in September in Canada but in Europe May 1 is the workers’ day.

On this Labour Day, we salute the men and women who helped secure the future of BC Operations. Your skill and dedication is our greatest strength.

Darryl McDaniel On Saturday, August 22nd, 2015, Darryl McDaniel, age 47, left our world after a brave and heroic battle with cancer that inspired all who knew him. First and foremost, Darryl was a caring and loving father to his six children, Sullivan, Olivia, Bailey, Christopher, Jessica, and Jonathon. He is survived by his wife Becky, “the love of his life”, as well as his mother Lois, his siblings Rick (Shelly), Margaret (Ron) and their families, who will all miss him dearly. Darryl was predeceased by his beloved father, Richard McDaniel in 2007. Darryl was a treasured son-in-law to Sandra/Fred St. Germain and Doug/ Irene McHolm, brother-in-law to Laura/Pat Nixon and Sandy/Craig St. Germain, and uncle to his many dear nieces and nephews. Darryl was born on July 30th, 1968, in Prince George, B.C. and spent most of his childhood in Terrace, B.C. Following his education, Darryl entered the Food and Beverage industry where his passion for business led to quick success. He was a driven, ambitious, and talented entrepreneur who taught the values of tenacity, integrity and positive thinking to many. In 2005, Darryl met Becky, and together, they began a cherished new life with their children: a life blessed with happiness, love, respect and courage. Darryl had many passions in life and the top of this list was life itself. He was an avid curler, he loved to travel, and he always had a story to tell. Darryl loved simple things such as spending time in the backyard with his friends and family while cooking for a small army. He was brilliantly creative and was sought after in the Food and Beverage industry to develop innovative business concepts. Darryl knew how to hunt for exceptional opportunities and always chased them as hard and fast as he could. There was never a lack of supreme effort in any aspect of Darryl’s life. Darryl’s wish, and one that is truly representative of his positive approach to life, is to have his friends and family celebrate the time that he was granted in this world. In lieu of a funeral service, there will be a celebration in the fall, details of which will be organized shortly. Finally, a sincere thank you to all of Darryl’s relatives and friends, both near and far, who touched and enriched his life, even if in a very small way…those who believed in his skills and talents, those who encouraged him through his fierce battle with cancer, and those who supported this phenomenally strong and courageous man to live to the end, the way he wanted to live. Memorial donations can be made in lieu of flowers to McNally House Hospice located in Grimsby, Ontario, http://www.mcnallyhousehospice.com Arrangements entrusted to Stonehouse Whitcomb Funeral Home, 11 Mountain Street, Grimsby (905)945-2755. Online condolences may made through www.smithsfh.com

RESEARCH VESSELS TO GATHER DATA

What’s Happening?

Lelu Island

We’re collecting bore hole samples on Lelu Island, near shore and in the marine environment in the area where marine infrastructure is proposed to be located, including the material offloading facility and the bridge from Skeena Drive to Lelu Island. This work builds on the investigative work we completed in 2013. It is to obtain additional information for our engineering design. This is not the start of construction. A vessel with bore hole sampling equipment will conduct the work in the marine environment and near shore. Impact on navigation within the port will be minimal.

Agnew Bank buoy

AGNEW BANK

For the work on Lelu Island, there is expected to be some helicopter activity to move the bore hole sampling equipment.

FLORA BANK

Safety zone Cautionary buoy

What will you see?

Local residents and boaters may see the sampling equipment, as well as some amphibious vehicles, and possible helicopter activity in the area. Mariners will notice a series of marker buoys surrounding the work area, creating a safety zone around the sampling equipment, and to eliminate hazards to passing marine traffic.

Canadian Energy. Global Reach.

Kitson Islet

Protecting the Environment

The work will be conducted in a safe and environmentally sensitive manner, with no adverse effects to marine life. No bore hole sampling will occur on Flora Bank.

For more information, visit one of our community offices in Port Edward or Prince Rupert, PacificNorthWestLNG.com or call 250.622.2727.

Timing

The investigative work is expected to run from August through November.

Workshop stresses keeping volleyball a fun skill to learn By Jackie Lieuwen THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - The Thompson River University (TRU) volleyball camp is aimed at kids having fun while they develop skills for the sport. Matt Kruegar is a former TRU athlete and assistant men’s coach, and ran the volleyball camp for the fourth year at Caledonia Senior Secondary School last week. “My goal for this whole thing is, if you can teach them a couple of skills to make them a little better that’s good, but if they have fun and actually want to come back and play volleyball, then we think we did our job,” he said. “That’s what this camp is for,” he added. Over 32 Terrace youth and 24 children participated in the camp last week, which was split into morning and afternoon sessions for different age ranges. The first half of each session focused on skill building and drills, the second half they played games. “I like to have them play a lot, I think playing is really important... If you can’t do it in a game than there is no purpose to it,” Kruegar said. The other TRU players who ran the camp were women’s all-star Iuliia Pakhomenko, men’s third year setter Tyler Pomietlarz and

Hewwing said he helps at the camps because he enjoys the sport and likes seeing

younger athletes have fun and develop various aspects of their game. Developing athletes and teaching and

strengthening volleyball skills is the second main reason for the camps, said Kruegar. He says it is nice to see the camp developing athletes such as Cole Nutma, a Terraceraised university athlete, and Evan Veldman and Lucas Mantel, who spent their summer playing U16 volleyball, which develops athletes for team B.C. Evan and Lucas both said the annual summer TRU volleyball camps definitely contributed to their ability to play at a higher level. Evan said the key was how it taught them more aspects of volleyball at a young age. Lucas adds that it gave them more reps to hone their skills. It also helped them learn to have fun, Lucas said. “They really encourage you having fun, but at the same time working you really hard.” The sentiment is echoed by other participants in the week-long camp, such as Ben Mantel. “Somehow they make tiring stuff seem fun,” he said. “You definitely get pushed a lot.” Sarah Flach says the camp is “really intense, and you learn a lot, but it’s also really fun.” Liam Nutma says the coaches also inspire him. “They always keep us going and keep us strong,” he said.

Fantastic games for Rupert seniors

By Cameron Orr

PRINCE RUPERT - Prince Rupert’s contingent that headed off to the BC Seniors’ Games in North Vancouver this August obliterated their past year’s totals in medals won. While their zone as a whole — comprised of Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Terrace, Kitimat and the Nass Valley — didn’t win as many medals as last year (they gathered 27, compared with 2014’s 28), the Rupertites that were in attendance as competitors blew their opponents out of the water. Starting with the team categories the North West zone, which finished in ninth out of 13 zones with their 27 medals, won silver in women’s 260 – 299 4 x 25 m freestyle relay and gold in men and women’s 55+ team of four carpet bowling. A duo of Rupertites, Sharon and Paul Paulson, won silver in men’s and women’s 55+ pairs cribbage - an improvement from the bronze they won a year ago. The carpet bowling team of Eunice and Frank Jackson, Betty Bishop and Harvey Calder took gold in men and women 55+ carpet bowling and the Basso-Maguire duo won bronze and silver in men and women 55+ pairs whist. As for the individual medal winners, Prince Rupert cleaned up once again. Ann Marie Vandermeer claimed a whopping six gold medals in swim-

KITIMAT - The hockey season is upon us and the Kitimat Ice Demons have already laced up their skates for a first round of practice. Starting September 1, the Demons were on the ice on practices, this year forgoing formal try-outs which in the past had been a chance to have an intra-player team competition. The season itself begins October 2. Already this year the team’s President General Manager Cliff Madsen says there will be a good mix between team veterans and newcomers, but the team still features all Kitimat players — either born and raised here or currently living here. The team’s coach Kevin Howell will be embarking on his second term leading the team, certainly with higher expectations for himself and the team this time. It was Howell’s first experience coaching a men’s team having moved up from coaching minor hockey levels. On the crew with him is trainer Alfie Galamini, and equipment manager Corey Eisenberger. The team will also be participating in the CIHL’s annual Challenge Cup, which is scheduled for September 25 to 27. That will also see the teams from Smithers, Terrace and Prince Rupert competing. Madsen says it will be interesting to see the effect of the conclusion of the RTA project on game attendance, but last season he said the games were consistently between 600 and 700 people all the way through. He says there are playoff changes this year in that all the teams in the CIHL will make the playoffs. Meanwhile he said the CIHL is looking for a league sponsor at the moment and encourages anyone to call him at 250-639-5601 to talk about that subject.

KSM Project: Steady Progress & Exciting New Discoveries For some companies, the summer months mean a slow down in activities, however for Seabridge Gold, it’s a busy time of year for carrying out exploration activities and environmental field work at its KSM Project. Seabridge Gold owns the KSM Project, a proposed gold, copper, silver and molybdenum mine located 65 kilometers northwest of Stewart, BC, which received its environmental approvals from BC and Canada in 2014. Seabridge has been working on the Project since 2007, and continues to conduct exploration, joint venture talks, environmental and community engagement activities all of which are required before construction can begin.

zones at depth provide encouraging news for investors holding Seabridge shares and makes KSM more attractive to a potential joint venture partner to develop the project. However, a company’s share price and the likelihood of obtaining a partner for a major project are influenced by the state of the commodities market, which is impacted by other factors including industrial demand for mineral resources and global economic conditions in other countries such as China, Greece and the United States. Seabridge continues to work on acquiring a joint venture agreement with a suitable major mining partner for KSM. A joint-venture partner would bring financial backing and technical expertise to ensure that the project is developed and operated responsibly over the long-term. What is a joint- venture partnership?: In a mining industry joint venture, called a JV for short, two or more different organizations agree to set up, fund, develop and operate a separate business opportunity by jointly supplying assets and management capabilities and sharing in the benefits as partners.

lot water treatment plant to remove selenium from KSM Project site water. Selenium occurs naturally at levels which exceed guidelines established to protect aquatic life in the waters at the site. The ability to remove selenium from waters will ensure that background levels of selenium do not increase as a result of the KSM operation. Seabridge met this condition last month when BioteQ Environmental Technologies, Inc., working under contract for Seabridge, used its proprietary technology in a pilot plant to successfully reduce selenium concentrations to very low levels (1 part per billon) using water taken from the KSM Project site. “The successful completion of the pilot plant test achieves a further milestone in KSM’s ongoing transition from exploration to development, and confirms the technical feasibility of the treatment technology proposed during KSM environmental assessment review process. The results provide further evidence that KSM has been designed to operate in an environmentally responsible manner,” said Fronk.

Exploration: The objective for the 2015 KSM Project exploration program, which runs from May to September and employs geologists, drillers, core cutters and support staff, is to potentially discover and expand higher grade mineral zones and add additional gold and copper resources for the project. The first months of the core drilling program have delivered encouraging results, with findings that indicate a potential high-grade mineral extension of the Mitchell deposit – KSM’s largest copper-gold deposit, at depths deeper than previously explored.

“We’re excited about where this discovery could lead, so we’re going to focus our attention on analyzing the new data we have discovered on the Mitchell deposit. The balance of the 2015 drilling program will concentrate on expanding the existing Deep Kerr deposit,” says Rudi Fronk, Seabridge Gold chairman and chief executive officer.

Environmental: To meet some of the 41 conditions imposed by the KSM Environmental Assessment certificate granted in July 2014, Seabridge must continue baseline data gathering and tracking. The 2015 environmental field work underway includes conducting additional water quality, hydrology, and atmospherics work to ensure the responsible development of the KSM Project and that the environment is protected.
