There is good news coming out of Calgary regarding the grizzly mauling of a local man. Chad Dueck is out of surgery and is expected to be discharged within the next few days where he will return home to Cranbrook. Chad, a local bow hunter who was elk hunting on Tuesday night, was attacked by a grizzly bear with cubs out near Pritchard Road. Chad was with a friend in separate areas, however, the friend heard the cries for help during the mauling and was able to get him to

the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. From there, he was airlifted to Calgary. He sustained serious bite wounds to his cheek, neck, right bicep, and buttocks, and also suffered deep flesh wounds, minor nerve damage in the face—not to mention a body full of claw marks and the trauma of the fight. All that being said, doctors have concluded that his injuries aren’t as serious as they first thought, according to a family member. “The surgeons were very pleased to say that the damage was not as extensive as they origi-

nally thought,” said Christie Dueck. “So the road to recovery, although it may be long, it won’t be as arduous as they had anticipated. “He is completely stitched up now and they’re expecting to discharge him over the next couple of days.” There has been an outpouring of support to the family in the form of phone calls, Facebook messages and through a GoFundMe page (www. gofundme.com/grizzlydueck) which is collecting donations to ease the financial burden during his recovery.

Election signs have been popping up in and around Kimberley since the writ dropped in August. And as surely as every election campaign, whether municipal, provincial or federal, brings out the signs, they often bring vandalism to signs as well. Local hunter on road to recovery after grizzly attack From Page 1 “He has a very extensive network of friends from the backcountry and the hunting community of all ages,” said Christie. “…It’s the love of the backcountry that has brought them together, so he’s had a lot of support from his hunting buddies.” Christie noted that the incident has struck a chord within Chad’s hunting community. “This has hit home for his hunting buddies and they’re changing the way that they hunt,” she said. “They’re now talking about sight-tosight—we may be in the

same area, we need to be able to see each other now—it’s not just enough that we’re in the same area, there needs to be a closeness. “It’s really shaken his community of hunters up and they’re just seriously looking at what they can do to keep each other safe and to have each other’s back.” Chad was out for an evening elk hunt with a friend, driving in separate vehicles, near the city spray irrigation fields on the night of the incident. Conservation officers have noted that the grizzly attack was de-

fensive in nature and have not been able to locate the sow and cubs since the incident. Initial reports indicated that Chad may have hit the bear with an arrow, but that is not the case, according to Joe Caravetta, a conservation officer who spoke to the Daily Townsman on Wednesday. “We believe that the bow hunter missed the bear,” he said. “We found all the arrows and nothing indicates that the bear was injured.” Christie noted Chad and his friend were

hunting together, but they were not within eyesight of each other’s positions. “They had their own blinds and they were in their own area, so they did not have line-ofsight with each other,” she said, “but they were definitely in the same area, so that when he was calling for help, his friend did hear him and that’s how he was rescued out of there.” Elk season for archery hunters in select management units across the East Kootenay opened on Sept. 1st.

Sign tampering a criminal offence From Page 1 “Police would like to remind persons that the removal of election signs is an offence and charges could be pursued,” Newel said. Section 325 of the Canada Elections Act says that no one may interfere with the transmission of election advertising, such as an election sign. However there are a few exceptions. For instance, government agencies may remove signs that do not respect provin-

cial or municipal laws, after informing the person who authorized the posting of the sign that they plan to remove it. Additionally, if the sign is a safety hazard, government agencies may remove it without informing the person who authorized the posting of the sign. A property owner can refuse to have an election sign placed. If signs are placed on your property without your permission, the election act doesn’t prevent you from

removing them. You can also contact the candidate or registered party and tell them you didn’t request the sign, and ask them to remove it. In the case of the missing Kimberley signs, police believe the signs were appropriately placed and are currently investigating the theft. KIMBERLEY NEWS September 5, 1956 Pioneer Lodge To Have Addition

Four years of effort by the Pioneer Lodge Committee culminated last week with the signing of a $27,125 contract with Fabco for the construction of an eight apartment

addition to present Pioneer Lodge. The building fund already contains $5760, which includes $2144 received recently from the Kimberley Lions Club. Nine thousand dollars will be contributed by the provincial government and $6000 by the city of Kimberley. A further $4000 is expected to come from the Adams’ estate. No doubt the re-

maining $2365 will be provided by local effort, the various organizations and the general public being very generous in support of this particular cause. Local NEWS Company pitches eco-friendly light tower Cranbrook likely site of Blackmore trial Tre vor Crawley

It’s no secret that mining is the lifeblood of the economy in the East Kootenay region and many businesses are inextricably tied to the industry in the Elk Valley. Caliper Machine and Hydraulics in Cranbrook is one of them. Headed up by Mike Hambalek for the last 17 years, Caliper does a lot of machining, line boring, hydraulics and welding with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) products along with specialized customization of parts and components. However, it’s their latest project that has gotten them excited as they look to the future. Inspired by the desire to create a product to save money on fuel costs for Teck Resources, Hambalek and the Caliper team have designed and created a hybrid LED tower that is run on solar and wind power. To light their operations at one mine site in the Elk Valley, Teck uses diesel generators that can run 24 hours a day. The fuel costs can add up pretty quick, according to Hambalek. With that in mind, the Soleco SWG-12 tower, the first of which should be arriving at the Caliper shop in a few weeks, will be powered by twin turbines at the top of the tower with solar panels at the base capturing sun-

light, while a small eight KW Kubota generator will serve as a supplement. “We researched our light tower over two years. We built a few different models and met with different manufacturers and talked with a few suppliers,” said Hambalek. “Fort McMurray is a huge user of light towers and one of the oil and gas companies up there has over 300 light towers and they’re all run by diesel.” While a solar powered tower isn’t anything new, the panels are unique in that they are hydraulically controlled, meaning they can be adjusted to capture the maximum amount of sunlight. Other features include the option to be fitted with security cameras and Wi-Fi transmitters for internet hotspots with an eight kilometre range between towers. “We tried to understand our customers,” said Hambalek. “So for example, light towers are available right now, but their solar panels are only made at a 45-degree angle. We made our adjustable, so at Fort McMurray, they’ll be at 80 degrees or in Cranbrook, they’ll be 70 degrees or down in the States it’ll be even less. “We can adjust to the climate so our light tower and our solar panels will be more efficient than what’s available right now.”

The tower, which can be set up with the use of hydraulics by one person, stands nine metres tall and has six 200 AH AGM batteries. The tower should be in Cranbrook within a few weeks, and Hambalek is hoping to create some buzz at trade shows in Fort McMurray, Edmonton and Toronto over the next few months with his new product. The eventual goal is to get some pre-sales and do as much as the assembly as possible in Cranbrook, which should create a few new jobs, he said. “My goal is to have a ‘Made in North America’ sticker on the side,” Hambalek said. “As much as it would be nice to be made in Canada, it’s very hard because lots of the components we share with the Americans, come from the States, but I believe that Made in North America deserves quality—we’re very picky in Canada as far as quality and I think it would be very beneficial for us to have another made in Canada product.” Hambalek unveiled his newest product in a media presentation that

also included Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett, who is the provincial Minister of Energy and Mines. Bennett heaped praise on Caliper’s ability to adapt to and improve upon the needs facing mining companies. Bennett also noted that the company’s products are a reflection of the hightech nature of mining. “The perception of lots of members of the public, I suppose— maybe not so much in the East Kootenay, but certainly in the big cities, is that mining is an old industry that relies on a lot of manual labour and it’s dirty and it’s not environmentally clean and it doesn’t use high-tech,” Bennett said. “And in fact, the opposite is true. It is a very technical industry, it is a very environmentally conscious industry, they’re always trying to find ways to do things in a safer sort of way from the environmental perspective.” For more information on the company, visit their website at www.calipermachine. com.

Europe’s Refugee Crisis: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

efugees from the wars of the Middle East are pouring into the European Union at an unprecedented rate. So are economic migrants from Africa and non-EU countries in the Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia, Albania, etc.), and some of them claim to be refugees too. They are coming at the rate of about 3,000 a day, mostly through Turkey into Greece or across the Mediterranean to Italy, and the EU doesn’t know what to do about it. It’s not really that big a refugee crisis: one million people at most this year, or one-fifth of one percent of the European Union’s 500 million people. Little Lebanon (population 4.5 million) has already taken in a million refugees, as has Jordan (pop. 6.5 million). But while a few of the EU’s 28 countries are behaving well, many more have descended into a gibbering panic about being “overrun”. It really is a case of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and the best of the Good is Germany. Chancellor Angela Merkel put it bluntly: “If Europe fails on the question of refugees ... it will not be the Europe we imagined.” She has put her money where her mouth is: two weeks ago she predicted that Germany would accept asylum claims from 800,000 refugees this year. She also said that Germany is suspending the “Dublin regulation”, an internal EU rule that says refugees must seek asylum in the first EU country they reach. This is manifestly unfair to Greece and Italy, so Berlin will now allow all Syrian refugees to apply for asylum in Germany regardless of where they entered the EU. Moreover, it will regard Syrian citizenship as adequate evidence that people are genuine refugees. France, Italy and the Netherlands have also been fairly generous about granting

refugees asylum, and quiet, gallant Sweden is accepting more refugees per capita than anybody else in the EU. But the good news stops here. Most other EU countries are refusing to take a fair share of the refugees, or even any at all. Let us define the Bad as those governments that really know they should be doing more, but are shirking their responsibility for domestic political reasons. The most prominent are the United Kingdom and Spain, which played a key role in saboGwynne taging an EU meeting last June that was trying to Dyer agree on a formula for sharing the refugee burden fairly among EU members. Prime Minister David Cameron’s problem is that overall immigration into Britain is high (330,000 last year), which has infuriated the right-wing media. In fact, more than half the newcomers were citizens of other EU countries (who have the right to cross borders in search of jobs), and only 25,000 were refugees — but such fine distinctions have little place in the public debate. And in Spain, there’s an election coming up. Then there are the Ugly: the countries that simply don’t want to take in refugees because they are different from the local people. Like Slovakia, which said that it might take a few hundred refugees, but only Christians, or Hungary and the Czech Republic, which are both talking about deploying armed forces on their borders to keep refugees out. All these countries lived under Soviet rule for two generations, which was almost like living in a cave. They have almost no experience of immigration, and it’s commonplace to hear people make racist or anti-Semitic remarks without the slightest sense of shame. In a way, they are

still living in the 1950s. It’s not an excuse, but it is an explanation. So how, in these circumstances, is the European Union to agree on a common policy for sharing the burden of caring for the refugees? “We must push through uniform European asylum policies,” Angela Merkel says, but the EU operates on a consensus basis, and there is little chance that that will be accepted. In practice, therefore, the burden will continue to be borne by the willing. In an attempt to lessen the burden, the German chancellor has proposed a list of “safe” countries (like the Balkan ones, which account for 40 percent of asylum claims in Germany), where it may be presumed that most claimants are really economic migrants. Arrivals from “unsafe” countries like Syria, Libya and Afganistan, where real wars are underway, would be treated as genuine refugees. But even then, each case must be investigated individually. “Germany is a strong country and the motto must be: ‘we’ve managed so much, we can manage this’,” Merkel said, and no doubt she can get through this year without changing course. But there is every reason to believe that there will be another million people risking everything to make it across the EU’s borders next year, and probably for many years thereafter. It may even get worse. In the long run it is almost certain to get worse, even if the current wars in the Middle East all miraculously end. Coming up behind the current crisis is the inexorable advance of climate change, which will hit the Middle East and Africa very hard indeed. Nobody has the slightest idea how many refugees that will generate, but it is likely to be many times the current flow. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

Mother Teresa and the Psalms What’s Up?

September 5, 1997, the world mourned the death Mother Teresa of a heart ailment at age 87. Her work with the poorest of the poor, the “Untouchables” in Calcutta, made her a global icon. She established the “Missionaries of Charity” in 1950, which now consists of over 4500 religious sisters working in over 130 countries around the world. Exactly 10 years later, the world did a double take when a volume of Mother Teresa’s private letters revealed that the tireless, smiling nun spent the last 39 years of her life in internal agony. She wrote that Jesus no longer seemed present to her in prayer or even in the Eucharist. In letter after tormented letter she described an unrelenting spiritual “dryness,” a “torturing pain.” Her smile was “a big cloak of deception.” At one point, she even admitted to doubting God’s existence. Eventually she apparently became more reconciled to her condition; but as far as we know, she died with it. The news was disorienting, to say the least. The late Christopher Hitchens, the noted atheist and Teresa’s constant critic, claimed it proved she was a “confused old lady who ... for all practical purposes had ceased to believe.” The Roman Catholic Church remained unperturbed; Pope John Paul II had already alluded to her “inner darkness” as a test she had aced. For many people, however, the question remained: Short of hypocrisy or a psychotic break, how could such alienation coexist with such obvious devotion in the same person? It is a paradox, indeed. But it isn’t anything new. This paradox is found in people of faith throughout history. We find the same kind of deep struggles in the Book of Psalms, which were written over a broad span of time from about 1000 bce to

450 bce. For many people, the Psalms are a source of spiritual sustenance. These masterpieces of literature and of spiritual devotion still have immense power to help us celebrate or to aid us in mourning. Many people have memorized the Psalms, and they live on in liturgy and hymnody of the church, as well as in private Rev. Yme prayer. Some of the Woensdregt Psalms are pure jubilation. The word “hallelujah” originated in the Psalms and simply means “praise God”. These psalms sing of the boundless experience of God’s goodness. But there are just as many psalms which give voice to a darker reality. They lament; they complain; they accuse God; they scream out in frustration and even rage. They give voice to the same spiritual dryness experienced by Mother Teresa. Here are some of her words: “Lord, my God, who am I that You should forsake me? The child of Your love—and now become as the most hated one. I call, I cling, I want—and there is no One to answer. Darkness surrounds me on all sides. If there be no God, there can be no soul. If there is no soul, then Jesus, You also are not true. Heaven, what emptiness! I am afraid to write all those terrible things—they must hurt You. Yet deep down somewhere in my heart that longing for God keeps breaking through the darkness. Love in me for God grows more real.” Compare that to some key lines from Psalm 22: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but find no rest. “I am a worm, and not human. A company of evildoers encircles me. All who see me mock at me; ‘Commit your cause to the Lord; let him res-

cue the one in whom he delights!’ “Yet since my mother bore me you have been my God. And I shall live for him. Posterity will serve him; and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn.” These psalms of lament move between complaint and praise in the same way as Mother Teresa’s letters. Deep hurt cohabits with profound faith. It feels like a roller–coaster ride some days, yet it gives expression to the reality many of us experience at times of dislocation. Such lament does not display a lack of faith. Contrary to Hitchens’ simplistic view, powerful lament suggests a deep and profound kind of faith which looks at life and at God with deep honesty and acknowledges that the pain and

hurt of life demands a response. The psalms of lament look God in the face and seek an accounting. Mother Teresa’s letters echo the reality of the Psalmist. Lament and celebration live side–by–side within the same person. David Van Biema, in a book about Mother Teresa, suggests that “the 2007 Mother Teresa is more compelling than the 1997 model. A woman who does great works for God is a paragon. One who does them while overcome with loneliness and doubt is a fascination. Like the complaints, she may be less easily fathomed than the smiley Mother—but once considered, she is harder to forget.” Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Kimberley resident fundraising for wheelchair safety upgrades Kimberley resident Chris Green hopes you stop in to the Beantree Cafe for a cup of coffee on Saturday, September 12, and perhaps stay to hear local musician Arne Sahlen play from 3 to 5 p.m. It’s all in aid of a good cause. Green, 45, is disabled and will be receiving a new power wheelchair soon. The government is paying for the chair upgrade — that’s the good news. The unfortunate part is that what Green considers vital safety elements, such as a motor upgrade and lights for the chair, are not included. “I’m trying to raise $3,600 to get lights and an upgrade to the motor package on a chair that the government is purchasing

for me,” Green said. “Because it gets dark early in the fall and winter here, I need the lights to ensure that I can see and be seen when I’m wheeling my way back from town. I don’t want to risk accident or injuries for want of light. “The motor upgrade is simple physics. My new chair will be heavy — by the time you add me, probably 500 plus pounds. I live at the top of townsite hill. The default motor package is simply not intended to pull that chair up that kind of long, steep incline. It’ll probably work for a while, but not reliably long term. The system fails because it doesn’t account for safety or reliability in calculating cost of a chair. The guideline is medical necessity, and even

then at the least possible cost. This often leads to substandard chairs that spend a lot more time in the shop than being of any use to the user. Having had a previous experience with this myself. I decided to try to raise the extra funding to make the chair ideal.” Green says he will need to rely on this chair for at least seven to ten years, so he feels the upgrades are vital. It might not have been the prettiest goal Sam Huston has ever scored, but for the 16-year-old defenceman from Brandon, Man., it was definitely the most memorable of his young junior hockey career. With less than five minutes to play in the third period of Thursday’s annual Kootenay Ice intrasquad game benefitting United Way - East Kootenay, Huston tallied the winning marker, putting Team White ahead for good in what had been a backand-forth affair. “It was a knuckle puck. I got a pass from my partner there and I just tried to find a lane,” Huston said after helping Team White to a 5-3 victory. “Luckily it went in the net. “It felt pretty good. Hard not to smile there at the end.” Huston, a ninthround pick (198th overall) of the Ice at the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, was one of many youngsters to star in the annual charity benefit game, which raised a total of $2,056 for United Way East Kootenay. While Huston provided the deciding offense, returning goaltender Keelan Williams turned aside 26 shots to back-

Veteran Zak Zborosky snapped a shot that found the mask of goaltender Declan Hobbs before trickling through to pull Team White into a 2-2 tie heading into the third period. With 20 minutes remaining to decide the annual intrasquad affair, Team White struck early in the third as 16-year-old Caden Benson redirected a point shot from 17-year-old Jason Wenzel. As Williams stood tall for Team White, it was beginning to look as though Team Black wasn’t going to find an answer until 17-yearold Jared Legien made it a 3-3 game midway through the final period. Cue Huston, tack on an empty-net marker from 15-year-old Eli Lieffers, a 2015 fourthround selection (78th), and that’s all she wrote

Competition for ice time just got a little stiffer in Cranbrook as the Kootenay Ice trimmed its roster to 35 Thursday night following the conclusion of training camp and the team’s annual Black/White Intrasquad Game. “Overall, we’re happy with where we’re at right now,” said Garnet Kazuik, director of scouting for the Kootenay Ice. “We know where we are as an organization moving forward. We know that we have lots of work in front of us. It’s going to be very difficult, but at

the same time it’s an exciting time to be with the organization. Obviously we had an older hockey team last year, so we know there’s work, but we’ve still got some good pieces there and it’s going to be exciting moving forward.” A total of 66 players were invited to camp. Only three goaltenders, 15 defencemen and 17 forwards advanced for a longer look in pre-season play. “It’s been a whirlwind,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice, Thursday night. “I can’t believe it’s over. It was long, but I’m really

impressed. I had no expectation coming in. I wanted to come in with a clean slate and I’m very, very impressed. “The size of our group, the strength -even some of the young guys -- they’re big, they’re mature. I think we’ve got a lot of real promising, young talent and obviously some of the veteran guys look outstanding. “They seem real keen and eager to learn. There’s a lot of variation. We’ve got some small guys with some speed and some skill. We’ve got some big guys with power that can shoot

pucks. Our ‘D’ looks well-rounded. I just like the balance that our group shows right now.” On one end of the spectrum, the pre-season roster holds seven 1995-born players, with only three permanent overage slots available. At the other end, a pair of 2000-born players from the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft class, though ineligible to suit up in regular season action, will be rewarded for their strong efforts in training camp with some exhibition play.

myself and what I’m doing in my crease,” Williams said of his third-period mindset in the closely-contested affair. “I just do everything I can to hold the fort for my team and get the ‘W.’” As an added bit of entertainment for the night, Team Black was coached by Ice alumni Nathan Lieuwen along with Matt Van Boeyen and Katie Murray of The Drive 102.9 FM.

On the other side, Ice alumni Adam Cracknell claimed his first victory as a WHL coach, assisted by Townsman sports editor Taylor Rocca. The Ice open the 2015 WHL pre-season Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. when the Lethbridge Hurricanes visit Memorial Arena in Cranbrook. Tickets are available for $10 at the Kootenay Ice office located in Western Financial Place.

Cranbrook wakeboarders claim hardware at nationals Colden Thompson, Ryder & Dagen Duczek find way to podium at 2015 Wake Canada Wakeboarding National championship

A trio of Cranbrook wakeboarders made their way to the podium at the 2015 Wake Canada Wakeboarding National in August. Colden Thompson claimed silver in Junior Men’s competition. Ryder Duczek edged out brother Dagen Duczek as the two finished first and second, respectively, in Junior Boys’ competition. Thompson put forth

solid performances in his qualifier heat and semifinal run to move into the finals. On his final ride of the weekend, Thompson threw out some big tricks, including a toeside and heel-side 540, Moby Dick and Crow Mobe, to earn silver in Junior Men’s competition as well as a ticket to the Open Division competition, which featured the top riders in the country. Thompson was the

youngest of six riders to advance to the finals in the Open Division. For the Duczek brothers, both put forth clean qualifying rides to advance to the finals. Ryder landed heelside and toe-side grabs, while Dagen soared through a number of surface 180s and lip slides. The Duczek brothers are sponsored by Just Liquid Sports, Hyperlite and Boston Pizza Cranbrook/Golden.

Ice set pre-season roster following ‘whirlwind’ camp Continued from page 8 Defenceman Loeden Schaufler (third round, 56th overall) and forward Eli Lieffers (fourth round, 78th) represent the lone 15-year-olds advancing beyond training camp. “It really looks like there are going to be a couple [players from the 2015 bantam draft class] that are going to be able to play,” Kazuik said. “It’s always nice when you get a guy later in the draft that you project can play. It looks like we have that right now. But having said that, there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge before they make the hockey team. We’ll wait and see.” Heading into pre-season it appears as though the greatest decision making remains on the blue-line. With 15 rearguards vying for space, competition is wide open. “The defencemen -that’s an interesting group,” Kazuik said. “We have depth of defencemen, but we have a lot of players on defence that need to define themselves and that includes some of the re-

turning players. What are you going to be? They’ve all got an opportunity to step up this year and we’ve got some new guys coming in that want to make that hockey team. They need to define themselves as well. It’s going to be an interesting competition on the back end.” A pair of 1996-born blue-liners represent intriguing characters, as both Nathyn Mortlock and Jordan Steenbergen have prior WHL experience after having spent parts of last season at the Junior A level. Meanwhile, five returners stand in line for added responsibility, should they stake a claim to it, including four 1997s -- Bryan Allbee, import Mario Grman, Troy Murray and Dylan Overdyk -and Cale Fleury (1998). A handful of overage defencemen remain on the roster, but in tough with goaltender Wyatt Hoflin and forward Luke Philp likely holding down two of the three 20-year-old slots. Up front, Kazuik expressed the group might be shallow, but that’s to

be expected after losing veterans like Tim Bozon, Levi Cable, Sam Reinhart and Austin Vetterl.

“We’re really going to see who truly wants to be a Kootenay Ice. It’s an exciting time for us.” Garnet Kazuik Kootenay Ice Director of Scouting Interesting names to watch through pre-season include Shane Allan (1997) and Jared Legien (1998). Both were late cuts last season, with Legien seeing 13 games of WHL action. A few other forwards will pop off the page due to name recognition, as Harris Pearce (1999), Noah Philp (1998) and Max Patterson (1999) all

have family connections to the WHL. For Pearce, his older brother Elgin spent four seasons in the WHL, including three with the Kootenay Ice. The older Pearce brother wrapped up a successful major junior career in 2013 after skating in 254 WHL games and registering 148 points. Philp’s connection is an obvious one as brother Luke, a 20-year-old veteran, led the Ice in scoring last season. Patterson, meanwhile, is the son of Ed Patterson -- a veteran of four WHL seasons as a player (1988 to 1992) and former assistant coach with the Kamloops Blazers (2010 to 2013). With a smaller group remaining in Cranbrook, the focus changes and the pace will pick up as those remaining move from intrasquad games and scrimmages into full-fledged exhibition play against other WHL opponents. For Pierce and assistant coach Gordon Burnett, the pre-season presents them with the first real opportunity to do some educating and system play as the evaluation process wears on.

“We’re going to start to teach a little bit, nothing elaborate, we’ll start on some basic parts of the systems,” Pierce said. “See how guys can pick that up and adapt and learn. Then we get ready to start playing some meaningful games. A lot changes when you start putting them against opponents wearing a different jersey. That will be interesting. We might see something we haven’t seen yet.” The first meaningful game of the year comes Tuesday, Sept. 8, when the Lethbridge Hurricanes visit Memorial Arena at 7 p.m. “The veterans will lead that group, they’ve been through it so they know how to change the pace of the game, pick up the play,” Kazuik said. “They know there’s people vying for spots and they know there are people going to play hard against them that are competing for spots. “You’re going to see the tempo go up a little bit. For us, we’re really going to see who wants to make an impression. “We’re really going to see who truly wants to be a Kootenay Ice. It’s an exciting time for us.”

Canadians Bouchard and Raonic advance to third round at U.S. Open C ANADIAN PRESS

NEW YORK - Canadians Milos Raonic and Eugenie Bouchard are through to the third round of the U.S. Open. Raonic advanced after defeating Spain’s Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1) on Wednesday, while Bouchard downed Polona Hercog of Slovenia 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3. Raonic, seeded 10th in New York, needed just 26 minutes to win the first set. But it soon became clear 24-yearold from Thornhill, Ont., who has battled injuries this season, was playing in discomfort. He received treatment during a medical timeout in the second set and also received massages during some of the changeovers. “There were sometimes doubts, should I keep going or not,” Raonic said. “The worst part was it was sort of getting worse and worse. “It is what it is. Deal with it and move on.” He was able to fight through the injuries, and, after dropping his first set of the tournament in the third,

cruised to an easy win in the fourth-set tiebreak. Raonic fired 18 aces to Verdasco’s 16 and broke the Spaniard on three of seven chances while saving all four break points he faced. “When I saw that I was able to hold serve, I guess I was always going to give myself some kind of a chance,” Raonic said. He said doctors have told him his recent discomfort is unrelated to the foot injury that kept him out of the French Open earlier this year. Raonic will face another Spaniard, 18thseed Feliciano Lopez, in the third round. Lopez advanced with a five-set victory over Mardy Fish in what turned out to be the last match of the veteran American’s career. Fish said he would retire after the U.S. Open. Bouchard, from Westmount, Que., had 14 break-point chances against Hercog, converting seven of them. But Bouchard also saved just four of the nine break points she faced. Bouchard will face Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova in the third round.

However, in the past 18 months, rumors have surfaced about him being bisexual. He never told me about this part of his past. Finally, I confronted him, and he admitted this was just a whim at a time in his life when he was alone. He’s been divorced for 43 years and claims he never knew why his wife divorced him. He now feels that, since he is with me and the past desires are no longer there, I should just forget about my disgusted feelings and go on as if nothing was ever said. His friends were the ones who kept dropping these hints to me, but of course, I ignored them until now. I don’t know if I should continue this relationship. He is 85 and I am 79. We don’t have sex, since he has erectile dysfunction and his desires have diminished. -- Worrying Winnie Dear Winnie: What is it that you want from this relationship? Whatever is in this man’s past does not need to affect your future. Someone who is bisexual is attracted to both men and women. If this were a sexual relationship, we might understand your concerns. But you aren’t having sex with him and have no plans to do so. You don’t have to marry him. You find him to be very enjoyable company. We don’t see a problem. If you want to continue spending time with him, go right ahead. Dear Annie: I have to reply to “What Happened?” the distraught wife whose husband is preoccupied with celebrities. You said this isn’t uncommon and to ask him to spend 15 minutes a day looking into each other’s eyes and listening to one another. Your advice was a bit too soft for this guy. His obsession is one of the shallowest things I’ve heard in a long time. He sounds like someone who needs to get a life, which should include his wife. This behavior needs to be stopped cold turkey, not enabled. It’s like an addiction. And it makes a poor substitute for the real things in life. Devoting so much of his time to something as empty as celebrity gossip is a sign that something’s missing. This man may need help to focus on the special someone who cares who he is -- his wife. -- Regular Person in Phoenix Dear Phoenix: We agree that a fixation on celebrities is ridiculously shallow, but have you looked at your TV, computer and newspaper lately? We are bombarded daily with celebrity news, celebrity updates, celebrity babies, celebrity divorces, celebrity clothes -- there’s no escape from it unless you live in a cave. This is a mild addiction (and we suspect most women whose husbands are addicted to golf or fishing would swap in a heartbeat). If her husband can spend at least 15 minutes a day really connecting with his wife, it will help enormously. If he cannot do that much, counseling is always useful, but he must be willing to go. Fortunately, the blaze was contained after hours of hard working labour of friends, neighbours and family. Only just over an acre burned to ground, while the rest of the acreage was left untouched by fire. While we did lose the home and 6 outbuildings, much was saved, including all of our lives! Edmonton police see bleak future for people duped by bogus fortune tellers their business in a rented house. Police say many people who have been burned do not want to make an official complaint, but call with information to help prevent others from becoming fraud victims.

Investigators point to requests for up front money to carry out healing rituals, or expensive plans to perform prayers, as signs of fraud. Some fraudsters claim to be able to remove black magic and witchcraft or make unrealistic promises to solve personal and financial problems. It’s difficult to track the criminals, who often have visas and quickly disappear when they believe they could be caught. Officers in Edmonton say the Canada Border Service Agency is involved in trying to find and remove the scammers from the country.

Black Sabbath announce farewell tour for next year Associated Press

NEW YORK - After five decades, Black Sabbath will launch a farewell tour next year. The heavy metal band starring Ozzy Osbourne announced dates for its The End tour, which kicks off Jan. 20, 2016, in Omaha, Nebraska. Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler will visit 17 North American cities before heading to Australia and New Zealand for seven shows. More concerts will be announced next month. Original drummer Bill Ward, who had a falling out with Osbourne, is not part of the tour. The Grammy-winning group released its self-titled debut album in 1970. They are pioneers of heavy metal music. Black Sabbath said in a statement: “When this tour concludes, it will truly be THE END, THE END of one of the most legendary bands in Rock ‘n Roll history.”
