Negotiations and pre-construction hurdles push off opening six-plus months

A5 FOI request provides public insight into remuneration for municipal force officers

Laura Rodgers Abbotsford News

A supportive-housing project intended to provide much-needed shelter for men who are homeless or at risk of homelessness will open at least six months late — in mid-2017, not in 2016 as was previously hoped. The city’s spokesperson, Katherine Treloar, now estimates the building contract will be signed before the end of September, with construction starting in early 2016 and taking 15 months to complete. When the project was first announced last December, the City of Abbotsford estimated construction could begin 10 days after the building contract was signed, and Abbotsford Community Services hoped residents could begin to move into the facility in 2016. Treloar said that during the bidding process, an interested contractor questioned the timeline and called it “not realistic.” The city now says it will take three to six months between the signing of the contract and ground-breaking. Negotiations with interested contractors have also caused a three-month delay in getting the building contract signed. “The window [between signing and breaking ground] was extended due to a negotiation with a preferred [contractor] to ensure the design and pre-construction process could be finalized,” said Treloar, adding the timeline extension was legally allowed under the terms of the project proposal. The project, funded by BC Housing for $2.4 million, will provide 20 units of housing and is seen as a key part of the city’s efforts to address homelessness Continued on A3

issues. As “low-barrier supportive housing,” it will allow residents who are not drug- and alcohol-free, and will provide support services on site. The project is currently being managed by the City of Abbotsford, and Abbotsford Community Services will operate the site. The project was initially proposed for a different location, on Montvue Avenue, but rezoning for that area was defeated by an Abbotsford city council vote in response to community pressure against the development. Janna Dieleman, Abbotsford Community Services’ spokesperson, expressed disappointment about the project starting later than expected. “It would be nice to have shovels in the ground in January, but realistically it might not be until March or April,” Dieleman said. “We wish it was moving forward quicker because, during all

This concept drawing shows the Gladys Avenue supportive-housing project, construction of which is expected to begin in 2016. these delays, there are people still that need housing and we can’t help them.” Dieleman said contract negotiations are a complicated matter because they need to be approved by all three parties involved in the project: Abbotsford Community Services, the City of Abbotsford, and BC Housing. “Everybody has to agree in the process.

That can take a bit of time,” she said. Homelessness in Abbotsford has become a flashpoint issue in recent years. Arguments recently concluded in a B.C. Supreme Court case in which a group of homeless people argued the city’s bylaws against camping in public parks infringed on their Charter rights. At trial, lawyers for the city repeatedly referenced

the supportive-housing project as evidence of the city’s efforts to provide shelter to its homeless population. Kevin Hollett, a spokesperson for Pivot Legal Society, which represented the plaintiffs in the case, said he was unhappy about the delay in this housing project. “What the court heard in trial over the summer is that there’s an inadequate number

of housing and shelter spaces for people in Abbotsford,” Hollett said. “What was supposed to be a good and promising start is not nearly enough. It might be another winter of people with no places to stay.” An example of the issues that people living on the streets can encounter took place on Monday. Two people were taken to hospital after drug overdoses at the homeless camp on Gladys Avenue. Emergency crews were called to the scene just before noon. A woman in her mid-20s was unconscious and a man in his mid-30s was still conscious but suffering medical issues. Both were taken to hospital for treatment and released later that day. Const. Ian MacDonald said it’s not yet known if the incident is related to the use of fentanyl, but a white powder found at the scene has been sent away for testing. Fentanyl has caused a high number of overdoses, several fatal, in B.C. this summer.

Contractual increases, overtime and retroactive pay are driving the increase in city salaries, according to a report recently brought to council. The city’s 2014 draft financial statements, which are required to report all employees paid more than $75,000 in a year, were presented in April. Those documents showed that the number of staff earning more than

$75,000 rose from 231 in 2013 to 234 in 2014. However, the number of staff earning more than $100,000 rose from 114 to 140 in the same period, up almost 23 per cent. Following that report, council directed staff to report on what was driving the escalating wages, back pay and overtime. That report showed that in 2014, there was a pay increase of 1.75 per cent for CUPE union members, 2.5 per cent for the firefighters’ union (IAFF) and a 1.75

per cent cost-of-living adjustment for exempt city employees. There was also a 14 per cent increase in overtime incurred by CUPE staff from 2013 to 2014, while overtime paid to firefighters decreased 2.6 per cent. According to the report, that is expected to continue to decrease as the city hired more flex firefighters. Without overtime, retroactive payments or retirements, only 202 people would have earned more than $75,000, instead of 234, according to the report.

Resident of targeted home charged in July 19-year-old man allegedly flashed a knife at a driver Vikki Hopes Abbotsford News

A man living in the home believed to be the intended target of a shooting that killed an innocent man last Wednesday was charged in July for allegedly brandishing a knife at another person. A source has confirmed for the Abbotsford News that Parmvir Chahil, 19, is a resident of the home in the 3500 block of Promontory Court. A property title search shows that the house is owned by Baljit Chahil and Hardip Padda, neither of whom have a criminal record.

An officer examines a car hit by bullets last Wednesday in the driveway of a targeted CURTIS KREKLAU Abbotsford News home on Promontory Court. Police believe the Chahil residence was the target of last week’s shooting, which killed

next-door neighbour Ping Shun Ao, 74. He was struck by a stray bullet while he was in

his yard. Court records show that Parmvir was charged with uttering

threats and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose related to an incident on July 24 of this year. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said police received a 911 call that day alleging that Parmvir had allegedly flashed a knife at another driver. He was charged the following day. Police began reporting more than a year ago that two groups of South Asian young men have been embroiled in a dispute which has been dubbed the “Townline Hill conflict.” The conflict began with dozens of incidents of mischief, assault, vandalism and arson, but has escalated to in-

clude several shootings. Most have occurred in the Townline and Blueridge areas of west Abbotsford. A previous murder took place last October, when Harwin Baringh, 18, was fatally shot while in his vehicle on Sparrow Drive in west Abbotsford. Court documents related to the incident mention the “Chahil crime group,” but it is not known if the Chahils on Promontory Court have any connection. Those documents were filed in December as part of a government civil forfeiture claim to seize two vehicles that were alleged to have ties to

Baringh’s murder. The records alleged that Baringh was a member of the “Chahil crime group” and that his death was part of a dispute with the “Dhaliwal crime group.” The provincial civil forfeiture office won its claim to seize the two cars – a 2007 and a 2009 Nissan Altima – saying they had been used to “engage in a violent ongoing gang conflict” between the two crime groups. The cars were designated to be sold at public auction, with the proceeds going toward grants for violence prevention, victim support, restorative justice programs and more.

Police, city hold public safety forum The Abbotsford Police Department (APD), police board and city council will host a public forum on community safety this Thursday, Sept. 10. The event will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Abbotsford Arts Centre, 2329 Crescent Way, and is being held in response to a series of violent incidents, including the shooting death of an inno-

cent bystander in west Abbotsford. “I believe an important next step in creating a solution to the very troubling and highly publicized violent incidents occurring in our community is for us to come together as a community to build those solutions,” said Mayor Henry Braun. Police Chief Bob Rich said the APD is con-

tinuing to make the ongoing conflict and “threat to public safety” a top priority. “We are putting in place a gang enforcement team whose sole purpose is to deal with the issues in the Townline Hill area. We will not stop until public safety is restored,” he said. The forum is open to the entire community, and people are encour-

aged to arrive early, as the seating capacity of 739 will be strictly enforced. Police previously held a public forum in April at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium. That event, held mainly in Punjabi, was aimed at the South Asian community and attracted more than 500 people, with many being turned away at the door.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I WEDNESDAY, September 9, 2015

Big changes for schools The new school year is officially underway. Even if you don’t have kids in the education system, there is still this sense that summer fun is behind us and now we must get down to business. Roads are busier and so are everyone’s lives. Parents begin their everyday scramble of getting kids to and from school safely. For some young ones, this week marks their entry into the school system. For older ones, they are entering into middle or high school. Classrooms are clean and bright, with teachers and administrators rolling out the welcome mat. While education is always evolving – big changes are coming as to how teachers teach. The stereotypical model of educators standing in front of the classroom lecturing while students follow along from textbooks is transforming. Instead, classrooms will be interactive with teachers discovering individual student’s passions. Teachers will

direct and fuel those interests on a new learning path. It’s welcome change for students who don’t thrive in the traditional classroom setting. If teachers can tap into what individual students get excited about, the potential to unlock their brains from boredom and turn that into drive and passion is exciting news. The school district is already preparing for the changes and teachers are adapting their teaching style to this new way of reaching students. There are no two students alike. Some children thrive on tests and report deadlines – others crash and burn. Change is hard for all, but this is a directive coming from the government that parents and students should support. Individual learning has the potential to unlock bright minds which can make for a bright future. Our future leaders and innovators are in our schools. – Langley Times

What the heck is going on with gasoline prices? Over the past couple of weeks, out here in Abbotsford, gas prices have been slowly dropping by one or two cents per litre every day or two. Yesterday morning (Sept. 1), around Abbotsford gas was at $1.06.9 per litre, but by 1400 hours the price had skyrocketed by nine cents to $1.15.9 per litre. What gives? What the heck is going on? We are in the middle of an election campaign, yet there seems to be a conspiracy of silence about this issue by all the parties and their candidates. The economy is allegedly a major campaign issue, and what voters and the transportation industry have to pay for gas is certainly a major part of their necessary expenditures. Canadian drivers and related industries are getting hosed by the oil industry, yet none of our politicians have the backbone to take them to task and say “Enough is enough.” How much longer are we going to be “Good polite Canadian sheep” and continue to take this abuse by Big Oil before we stand up and take action to stop this abuse? A copy of the bylaw and relevant background documentation may be inspected in the Planning Services Division (2nd Floor), Abbotsford City Hall, 32315 South Fraser Way, Abbotsford, B.C., on August 31, September 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 14, 2015 between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. lance to protect returning sockeye salmon as the Fraser River run comes in at levels far below what was forecast. The latest estimate pegs the run size at 2.4 million salmon, barely a third of the 6.8 million mid-range projection of fishery managers. Commercial fishing that was anticipated for August never happened because of the low returns. About 150,000 sockeye have been taken in First Nations food fisheries. “We don’t have the abundance we were expecting,” said Jennifer Nener, Lower Fraser area director for DFO. Unusually warm ocean temperatures over the past two years are thought to have reduced the food supply

On top of that, the salmon that have made it back to the Fraser have had to battle dangerously hot river temperatures and low stream levels as a result of this summer’s drought and last win-

ter’s record low snowpack. Watershed Watch Salmon Society commercial fishery adviser Greg Taylor is concerned that far fewer of the stressed salmon that get past Mission will survive to reach their spawning grounds this year and effectively breed. Last summer, 1.7 million late-run sock-

eye that were counted as having gone upriver never reached the spawning beds and Taylor fears a repeat is in store. “This is nowhere near the 2009 debacle,” he said, referring to the sockeye collapse that triggered the Cohen Inquiry. “But this is not a very good scenario.” Now, a large number of pink salmon are beginning to enter the river – that run size is projected at 14.5 million. Commercial fishermen who have been barred from the sockeye fishery are expected to want to catch as many pinks as possible. But seine boats that net up pinks in the weeks ahead could end up killing late-running sockeye as a bycatch. Late sockeye returns are down sharply from a forecast 1.24 million to an estimated 300,000. Commercial boats fishing for pinks would be directed to release sockeye that are caught but Taylor is skeptical many netted sockeye would survive after being tossed back. Sports fishing for Fraser sockeye has also been banned this summer and there’s been growing pressure on some anglers who claim to fish for other species but use bottom bouncing or “flossing” techniques to snag sockeye that don’t normally bite a hook. Taylor, a former commercial fisherman, thinks DFO should cut off all river bank fishing when sockeye is non-retention due to conservation concerns and recreational anglers refuse to use more selective methods. But he doesn’t believe fishery managers have the political will to enforce such a policy. “I’m appalled,” Taylor said, adding such blatant disregard of regulations by the commercial fleet would never be tolerated. “They know people are not complying. If they knew a significant component of the commercial fleet was not complying with the regulations, that fishery would be shut down. That’s a big-time double standard there.”

$29,000 literacy grant The provincial government is giving a $29,600 grant to Abbotsford Community Services to provide residents of Abbotsford with literacy skills. The grant comes from the $2.4 million government has invested in community adult literacy programs in 75 B.C. communities in 2015-16. Funding is distributed to non-profit community groups to offer free literacy training

that is easily accessible in local places such as schools, Aboriginal friendship centres and community centres. The program is tailored to suit the needs of any adult with low-literacy ability, and is delivered by trained volunteers offering one-to-one tutoring or small-group classes. Community organizations collaborate with a public post-secondary institution

in their region. These partnerships encourage the transition of adult learners from literacy programs to post-secondary studies and/or employment training. Abbotsford Community Services is collaborating with the University of the Fraser Valley. The Wellington Folk visit A five-piece band from Calgary, The Wellington Folk, are making one of their six stops on a B.C. tour in Abbotsford. They will appear at the House of James on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. This is the first visit of the folk rock band to the west coast and they are excited about playing in new venues, finding new enthusiasts, promoting their new EP Counting the Steps and sampling west coast microbrews. They are fresh off a good showing in the CBC 2015 searchlight competition. Asked to describe their music, Sarah Kemmers, the creative force behind the band, says “I guess we’re a blend of folk, rock, blues with a bit of an indie twist.” The group has been together for about four years, and are a tight, skilled band that is highly entertaining.

The Wellington Folk,a Calgary-based folk and rock group, will perform in Abbotsford on Sept. 18, at the House of James.

A parade and ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain takes place in Abbotsford on Sunday, Sept. 20. There will be approximately 200 cadets on parade for this ceremony, as well as members of the Royal Canadian Legion, branch 15 in Abbotsford. It will take place at Thunderbird Square, on Veterans Way near Abbotsford City Hall. Guests and members of the public will be seated by 1:45 p.m., with the ceremony to begin promptly at 2 p.m. MP Ed Fast and MLAs Mike de Jong, Darryl Plecas and Simon Gibson have been invited to attend, along with Mayor Henry Braun and members of city council, and lay wreaths on behalf of their respective levels of government. There has also been an invitation for the Abbotsford Police Rifle Squad to participate in the ceremony. Also in attendance will be cadets from Abbotsford’s 861 Silverfox Air Cadet Squadron, as well as cadets from Mission, Langley and Maple Ridge air cadet squadrons. The Battle of Britain was the greatest air battle of the Second World War, and was instrumental in Great Britain remaining defiant of the imperial ambitions of Nazi Germany. It allowed Britain and its allies, including Canada, which was fully committed to the war effort already in 1940, to continue to lay plans for the defeat of the Axis powers. British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill summed it up with a

Sean Cathcart recently hauled in his first sturgeon ever, thanks to a local fishing guide and sign language interpreter. Cathcart, who won the grand price of a a guided sturgeon-fishing trip at a recent event for the deaf hauled in a five-footlong sturgeon on the Fraser River near the mouth of the Vedder River. Cathcart, who is deaf, was guided by Big Valley Sport Fishing guide Mark Wilken and assisted by Abbotsford sign language interpreter Rhys McCormick, both of whom had donated their time. He had won the trip at a July event hosted by the Family Network for Deaf Children, and Deaf Youth Today at the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery. “It was really great to have access to this

Being able to ask my questions directly instead

of writing everything down made the whole process much easier. Catching my first sturgeon was an amazing experience, and having an interpreter on the boat made everything smooth. I think that there should be more opportunities like this for deaf people – after all, we pay the same taxes as everyone else.”

As Gil Lewinsky began to recite his morning prayers, Hebrew prayer book in hand, one of his particularly curious congregants strode over

to peek at the pages. Appreciating the interest, Lewinsky repeated the passage, making sure that Isaac heard it well. Isaac is a sheep – a black-and-white mot-

tled headstrong ram, with large horns and an inquisitive disposition. Lewinsky believes Isaac’s particular breed can trace its lineage all the way back to the Book of Genesis. Though

he’s a media spokesperson by trade, Lewinsky and his accountant wife Jenna have unexpectedly become shepherds of a now 68-strong flock at a farm in Abbotsford. Their goal is to move all of the sheep to Israel. “We’re on a mission to preserve these sheep. It’s the sheep breed that is important,” Lewinsky said. Known as Jacob sheep, the small, lean, smart breed has long been out of fashion with commercial sheep farmers. The few left are often kept as novelty animals for their unusual spotted coats. The couple received their first few sheep as a gift from a friend last year – the hope being the pair of animal-lovers would enjoy the unusual pets. The Lewinskys, who hail from Israel, researched the breed and found what they describe as a spiritual calling. When the heritage ranch from which their first few sheep came decided to get rid of its entire flock, the couple offered to take them. They’ve continued collecting the animals since. Jacob sheep were a popular ornamental breed in England during the 17th and 18th centuries and some were imported to North America in the early 1900s. Since then, the English breed has often been crossbred with larger commercial sheep varieties, Continued on A19

which produced a more marketable animal, yet kept the Jacob sheep’s appealing leanness. The small number of Jacob sheep remaining in North America, estimated at less than 10,000, maintain the breed’s original smaller size. The Jacob Sheep Breeders Association says historical documentation traces the appearance of similar-looking sheep back to the area that is now Syria. Due to their uniformly spotted appearance and Middle Eastern provenance, the Lewinskys believe their sheep are directly descended from a flock owned by Biblical patriarch Jacob, as described in chapter 30 of the Book of Genesis. In that chapter, Jacob works as a shepherd for his uncle Laban for a number of years. As payment for his work, he proposes that he be given any sheep with dark spotted coats — initially, a very small portion of the flock. But by selectively using dark-spotted rams in mating, he produces many offspring with spotted coats, and leaves Laban’s service with a large flock of his own. This became the flock kept by ancient Hebrew people, the scripture says, and they provided a livelihood and factored significantly into religious life. ❑❑❑❑❑ Gil and Jenna Lewinsky first met in Israel, when he worked for a newspaper and she had a contract job with the Israeli government. Both grew up splitting their time between Israel and Canada, and they moved to Abbotsford shortly afterward. After receiving their first few sheep in 2014, they sought out any heritage farms or private owners across Canada and the

Jacob rams tend to have four horns, which can grow to an impressive size in adulthood. United States that kept some of the rare breed. They chose only to collect the traditional, “unimproved” small Jacob sheep, which are believed to be unchanged in appearance for hundreds of years. So far, Gil estimates they’ve spent close to $20,000 between purchasing, farm rent, feed and maintenance. Currently, the sheep found in Israel are

from the Awassi breed, a hardy desert variety. Though there is no firm scientific evidence linking their flock to those described in Genesis, the Lewinskys see bringing their sheep to Israel as a spiritual imperative tied to the idea of aliyah, which describes immigration from the Jewish diaspora to Israel. More than just moving some livestock from where they are to where some

believe they were, the couple sees this as the fulfillment of a promise from God. The group they’ve formed to further the cause of bringing the sheep to Israel, the Friends of the Jacob Sheep, has now partnered with officials from the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem Canada, a group formed by evangelical Christians to express their support for the State of Israel. The next step in their quest to bring the sheep to Israel is to push for an okay from the nation’s agriculture ministry. Currently, Israel does not allow the import of livestock from Canada. A spokesperson for Israel’s agriculture ministry told the Jerusalem Post in June it was “impossible” to grant this import request for this reason. Yet the couple remains hopeful. “We want to send them to Israel because that’s where they belong,” Gil said.

sold out venues and the strongest performer lineup in over a decade. Patrons were awed by the sheer power and maneuverability of the USAF F-22 Raptor, whose appearance heralded the return of the U.S. military to the Abbotsford show. On Monday evening the show was able to reward many community groups such as the Air Cadets, Scouts Canada, Hand in Hand and Joshua House, with cheques for their service in various capacities at the airshow. A total of just over $50,000 was returned to the community to aid these groups. The airshow also thanked the many businesses who help sponsor the airshow with Snowbird’s lithographs and framed photos. These businesses partner with the airshow by providing either cash or in-kind services and equipment. The airshow estimates that it has a direct financial impact on the Abbotsford community of some $2 million in revenue for the businesses, hotels, and restaurants over the week -ong period. “We are extremely pleased that so many local businesses have stepped forward to join forces with the airshow. Our goal going forward is to increase the amount of money that we can return to the Abbotsford community while continuing to produce one of North America’s top airshows,” said Jim Reith, President, Abbotsford Airshow.

Most employers will allow their employees some flexibility when it comes to personal use of work computers. Because of this, the question arises as to where the line is drawn when it comes to personal privacy. As technology advances, threats to computers, and the information stored in them, becomes a growing concern. Public agencies are obliged to protect data stored within their IT systems and are turning more and more to various technological tools, like automated surveillance programs, to do so. But how do employers protect workplace IT systems while still upholding the privacy rights of their employees? The Information and Privacy Commissioner for B.C. recently released an investigative report concerning the well-publicized use of employee monitoring software by the District

This sort of information is protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Moreover, the Commissioner stated that by collecting personal information and storing it in one network location, the software created an additional security risk that attackers might target. The commis-

of Saanich. This followed a public statement in January 2015 by the mayor that software had been installed on his office computer that, without his knowledge or consent, collected his personal information. The software collected data by monitoring all emails and websites, and tracking every keystroke. The district’s policy stated that the data collected by the software would only be accessed in the event of a security breach, such as hacking or data theft. The commissioner concluded that this means of collecting employee personal information was not within the district’s authority because it was: (a) not done for the purposes of law enforcement; (b) not all of the information collected related directly to the prevention of threats; and, (c) and not all of the information collected was necessary to accomplish the program’s purpose. Furthermore, employees were not notified of the collection of their personal information, as required by provincial privacy legislation. Because the district allows employees to use the computers for some personal use, the software also collected the private information of its employees, such as sensitive data like banking information.

The enduring power of print

JUSTIN BEDDALL Abbotsford News

Despite a rise in popularity of e-books and tablets, independent bookstore owners are busier than ever “These are miniatures. It was a craze in the late 19th century,” explains Kyle, owner of the 8,000-squarefoot store Hemingway’s New & Used Books on Essendene Avenue. With a background in book restoration, he has a reverent appreciation for books made between 1500 and 1800. “That’s the handmade

period. Once you get to about 1830 you start to see the beginning of mechanization in the process and by mid-century so much of it was taken over by machines.” Of course, these days there’s a new method of book publishing: e-books. A Pew Research Center study released in January 2014 titled “E-Reading Rises as Device Ownership Jumps,” reported that half of American adults now own either a tablet or an e-reader. You’d think that would make booksellers like Kyle worried – but he’s not. That same Pew Research study notes “though e-books are rising in popularity, print remains the foundation of Americans’ reading habits.” And while there has been a rash of independent and chain bookstore closures in Metro Vancouver, Kyle doesn’t blame that on the dawning age of e-books and portable reading devices like Kindle and iPads. Steep rent is a more likely culprit. In fact, Kyle credits e-books with inspiring more readers. “It expands reading, there’s no question,” he said. “That’s been our experience. It introduces more people to good books. And eventually they’re going to come in and start collecting

the real thing. We see that time and time again.” Kyle got his start in the book world by restoring antiquarian books, which led to him starting his own collection and hanging around book stores. In the mid-1990s, he began selling books online, which eventually led to his purchase of the store in Abbotsford in 2000. And while Kyle doesn’t see e-books as a threat, he believes embracing technology is key to a successful future in the book business. Perhaps the most important piece of technology is the store’s custom-tweaked inventory software that allows them to track inventory, books sales and flag titles for customers. For instance, Kyle recently attended a private science fiction book sale that boasted 3,000-plus titles. When he arrived, he pulled out his smartphone and was able to pull up a database report that allows him to stay on top of his book inventory and his customers’ want-list in real-time. “We don’t make mistakes in buying, which is crucial. We peeled off the ones that we wanted using our database so there were no errors. We know exactly where we are going to sell them – either online or in the store, we have customers waiting.”

The beauty and simplicity of the book From A24

And while there might be a widely held belief that today’s youth only read in 140 characters, that’s not the case, according to Kyle, who notes that his youth and teen sections are actually growing. “Clearly, there is evidence they do [enjoying reading books],” he says. “Hello David,” says a passing regular customer as he goes downstairs, where there’s mainly non-fiction categories like art, military history and Canadian history. It’s also where they keep a growing section of vinyl records, which are undergoing a revival of popularity. And it’s not just Deadheads and milleniums looking to recapture a nostalgic period in their lives. “We have a whole new generation of collectors,” says Kyle. “We started seeing it in books a few years back and now we’re seeing it in vinyl. It’s the 15- to 30-year-old age group who are now becoming collectors. It’s true for books and it’s true for vinyl.” Kyle figures this particular demographic has grown up with iPads and digital downloads and has reached a stage where they actually want to touch and hold the actual record or book. These kids grew up with “instant access” but didn’t own it. “And now they want to own it. They want to own stuff.” So, despite a proliferation of digital devices and downloads and level of 24/7 connectivity that’s become so prevalent in this digital age, he’s not worried about the future of bookstores. “We’ve never been more optimistic. We just really embraced the technology side of it and we just think its going to get more and more interesting.”

The beauty and simplicity of the book A 2013 study by U.K.-based Voxburner, a firm that specializes in studying the habits of young

consumers, found that 62 per cent of 16- to 24-year-olds prefer buying books over e-books. Among the factors for this, according to Voxburner, were “pricing of e-books being too high” and “there is less affection towards electronic versions of books.” Eric Spalding, a Social, Cultural and Media Studies associate professor at the University of the Fraser Valley, can relate to why there’s still a preference for the old-fashioned book. “I much prefer real books myself. In my case, it’s a matter of old habits dying hard. That would be a factor for young people as well, I imagine, as e-books are so recent that most teens and young adults would have encountered them as something new after becoming used to books as children,” says Spalding. He notes that the simplicity of a book has a lot going for it. “I like knowing where I am in a book, I like flipping back to double-check something or flipping forward to see how many pages are left in a chapter. I like the possibility of comparing two parts of a book with each other. I feel you can do these things more easily with a book than with an e-book.” “Also, I don’t like the idea of spending more time in front of a screen, with light shining directly into my eyes, even if I can dim the light on an e-reader to my satisfaction. And books can have a great feel and smell, they won’t break if you drop or mistreat them and you can share them with others more easily. It’s a more abstract feeling, but they also connect you to a centuries-old practice – in reading an actual book, you’re doing what people were doing back in medieval times or the Renaissance or the 19th century. Reading books that were published a long time ago reinforces this feeling of connectedness with the past.” Amber Short is a second-generation bookstore

owner. Her father David purchased Erna’s Book Nook in Chilliwack 25 years ago and later changed the name to Book Man because that’s what everyone started calling him. They now have stores in Chilliwack – the “mothership” with over 5,000 square feet and the majority of the staff and admin – and a smaller 1,800-square-foot operation in Abbotsford. Short managed the store for more than 16 years before becoming the official owner two and half years ago. When asked about selling physical books in a digital age, she’s not the least bit worried. She saw a slight dip in sales a few years back, which she attributed to the introduction of e-books, but it didn’t last. “In some ways I kind of feel it was the romance of the gadget and that book lovers are merging their love of books

through a combined effort of books and e-books or just returning to the printed word, period. “I think it’s just such a different tactile and emotional experience to connect with physically printed words,” Short continues. “It’s a very different experience to curl up in your armchair with something tangible and physical and relax that way.” Short figures it’s not just the experience of connecting with the printed word that makes the printed word experience so transformative. “I think one of the biggest differences I notice between print and e-books is the actual experience of being in a bookstore. It’s one thing to go to Amazon.com or something like that and browse titles and have recommendations come up for you – it’s a totally different experience to go into a bookstore, meet the owner,

see other people there, pet the cats. It’s an outing instead of being insulated in your house. I think that’s part of the allure of the printed word – just going for a browse, having those books surprise you and being surrounded by those aisles of adventures waiting for you.” And with 80 sections and subsections in her store, the adventures are many. Times have certainly changed since her father first got into the book business, but like her dad, she strongly believes in the power of the printed word. “I’ll get people who are, say, business travellers and when they head out on a trip they load up their Kindle and they don’t have to worry about hauling a lot of books with them, people going on pleasure trips, stuff like that. But day-to-day reading, it seems like the vast majority of people are turning back to the printed word.”
