Over the past two weeks the Rimbey RCMP have responded to and proactively investigated 89 occurrences, including: vehicle theft, break and enters, drunk driving. Safety in school zones A new school year has begun, and the Rimbey RCMP wish to see all students make it to class and back home safely every day. In order to ensure the safety of our most precious resource, the RCMP are watching for the following in school zones: speed, attention (put down your distractions, including that morning cup of joe), stopping (come to a complete stop, look, then look again before proceeding), visibility (clear your windows from frost, dirt or tint so you can see the little pedestrians and they can see you). Speaking about pedestrians, students please put down your handheld devices and take off your headphones so you can see and hear the hazards around you when crossing the street. Yes, you have a part to play in your safety as well. Parents of children who ride their bikes to school, please teach them to get off their bikes and walk them across the crosswalks. Some children have been seen darting onto the street from a hidden sidewalk without looking for vehicles simply trusting that all traffic will see them and stop. We would like to see these children make it to their graduation some day. Impaired drivers charged The RCMP have charged a 21 year old male from Milk River for driving while impaired by alcohol. He was stopped on Lockhart Road for speeding, and despite his initial objection

to having consumed any alcohol, the smell of liquor on his breath told a different story. Another male, 30 years old from Sylvan Lake, was found on highway 20 in his parked truck with the engine running. He was also found to be intoxicated, and was charged with impaired care and control of a motor vehicle. Public assistance requested There have been a number of reports generated for theft this period. Over half a dozen lease sites were targeted and solar panels and batteries stolen from them. The RCMP is requesting the public report any suspicious vehicles or behaviour seen around lease sites and gas plants. A 2008 black Dodge Ram flat deck dually was stolen from a gas plant on Iola Road. This same truck is believed to have been used in a break and enter to another gas plant in the Wilson Creek

Once again, summer is getting ready to abandon us and fall has moved in, already taking over the decorating process like it owns the place. Soft tender greens of every shade and hue are being replaced with colours like old gold, burnished copper and deep crimson. It’s pretty enough, but gosh, I’m kind of partial to all shades of green and love those brilliant splashes of colour that have been shouting out at us from flower gardens and even in roadside ditches. However, the fact seasons change is inevitable and there is no point in whining about it. In fact, it seems change is constant not only in the seasons, but in life. “Moving forward,” seems

Red Deer, Alberta Published every Tuesday by PNG Prairie Newspaper Group in community with: President: Mary Kemmis

I was never very good at it, struggling to get the column strips straight on the page and usually failing miserably. Finally, we went to computers and a strange word called pagination and I wasn’t very good at that either. But, here I am moving forward! One of my grandchildren began Grade 1 this year and his mom posted his beautiful little face on Facebook. He looked so innocent, so sixyears-old, so scrubbed clean from summer’s play with new jeans and a new T-shirt. He is holding a sign that says “I want to be a biologist,” and my grandmother’s instinct that knows about such things, sees the stirring of new beginnings in his clear, blue eyes. My oldest granddaughter

turned 13 on Aug. 31. I hear she has her very own cell phone. She, too, is on the threshold of a new beginning, moving forward, but still hovering precariously on the windowsill of childhood. I want to scoop her up and buy her ice cream and happiness and wrap these presents up in some kind of invisible magic gift-wrap that will last forever and ever. But, reality tells me I will have to settle for ice cream and maybe a walk on the beach to impart some words of grandmotherly wisdom, which will probably be caught up in the waves and drift away on the soft breeze, and not be imprinted in her mind, anyway. I think back to my own new beginnings.

Six-years-old. Grade 1. I discovered that first day that I was different. I was left-handed. I discovered the second day that most other kids had moms who sewed them pretty dresses and braided their hair. I did not. Despite these two strikes against me, I moved forward quite happily and it was good. I think back to being thirteen-years-old. What did I wish someone had said to me? And would I have listened? Probably not! But, even then, perhaps ‘don’t be scared, no matter what happens, you can move forward’ would not have been such bad advice. Come to think of it, maybe somebody did!

Canadian political warfronts gearing up to wage battle as fall election looms

Jonah Kondro

Production:

to be the buzzword of the day. It seems every day I hear sentences that start with the words, “moving forward,” like it must be a good thing, and we must dust our hands of the past, no matter how tempting it is to slip back there once in awhile. I muttered about this very fact to my husband the other day as I was bustling about the kitchen chopping up tomatoes and cucumbers with a rather unnecessary vigor. “Changes, always changes,” I muttered as I chopped and sliced. “Well, you should be used to it,” my husband replied. I was surprised he answered. Usually I chatter on about this, that and the other thing, pretty much marking the beginning and end of the conversation, at least until he realizes I am talking and turns his hearing aids up. “Did you tell them about when you used to work with hot lead?” he added. “I never worked with hot lead,” I admonished. “I’m not that old.” “You’re not?” he questioned. “Not quite,” I chuckled in spite of myself. But I did work in the newspaper industry when the norm was to use light tables and the cut and paste method.

I came across a friend’s social media post a couple of days ago: “Anyone else miss hockey?” I never felt the need to reply or comment. There is a lot going on in the American and Canadian political warfronts to make up for any summer

NHL withdrawals. The political opinion columns, the television news reports, the social media comments, and the ensuing slander is thoroughly enjoyable. There are certain aspects of an election that I do not enjoy though. The campaign methods Canadian political parties utilize is a lot a male trying to pick up a date from a nightclub: there is a lot of talk, a lot of assurances, a few white lies, and an unrelenting pressure to sway a decision. It seems pathetic to watch such a display and watch constituents get sucked into believing outlandish promises. I’ve voted in enough elections to know that every vote counts. Maybe I’m getting more politically responsible or maybe I’m just

generally aroused by the upcoming federal election. The NDP’s “orange crush”, in Alberta, last May gathered a lot of attention. I’m more curious to see the outcome of the federal election polls in Alberta than I am to see who will remain or become Canada’s new prime minister. However, I do have a small but serious interest in political party platforms that address global concerns. The problems in Alberta and in Canada extend past our prairie fields, our lakes, our rocky mountains, and our oceans. Political leaders, running in the federal election, have my attention when they intend on increasing their values and actions onto a worldwide scale.

I used to play the horses quite a bit with my grandfather. My skills as a gambler were never that great, but I usually determined my bets based on the jockey’s track record. I apply the same method when voting in any sort of election: the history books need to be referenced. Moreover, it is only in the aftermath of a horse race or an election that show the real nature of a champion. Thankfully Donovan Eckstrom has revitalized the Rhino Party in the Edmonton-Strathcona riding. This absurd ballot option in Edmonton adds a comedic and satirical layer to Alberta (and Canada’s) political scene. I’ve read a few articles and watch a YouTube video on the Rhino Party

candidate; I was reminded that I cannot take life too seriously. I hope Mr. Eckstrom deliberates with the U.S. republican frontrunner Donald Trump — they could compare notes. Or better yet, Mr. Eckstrom and Trump could have a conference call with the previous mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford. Politics and the ensuing shenanigans have always caught my attention, like the grey horse on the racetrack. I hope that my vote on October 19th helps restore some of Canada’s economic and social problems; and yet I can’t dismiss my little desire to bet on the underdog and cast a rebel vote. Maybe the political scene within Canada need to be shaken up further.

Local Synergy Group to meet soon The Rimbey Regional Synergy Group (RRSG) will hold its next regular meeting on September 17th. The meeting will start at 1:00pm and will be held in the meeting room at the Bonavista Office in Rimbey. The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) will be in attendance and will be updating us on what’s happening in their organization and what kinds of things they’ve been handling since we met last spring. They’ll touch on topics like the current industry water use restrictions, the Nexen suspension order, and some other incidents you may have heard in the news over the summer, along with an update on their Alternative Dispute Resolution process, and opportunities for the public to participate in energy development applications and processes. RRSG holds regular bimonthly meetings to hear updates on local industry activities, discuss local activity impacts and opportunities, and to share information about industry related practices in general. These meetings are also a great opportunity for industry representatives to learn more about the agricultural practices and implications to the landowners in the local community. Meeting attendance typically includes landowners and community residents, local county representatives, local industry companies, local businesses and the Alberta Energy Regulator. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of every second month, January through November. There is no meeting in July, but the group typically hosts an Open House event in June. To RSVP for the meeting or if you would like more information about the Rimbey Regional Synergy Group, you can contact their facilitator, Rick Anderson at 403-847-8086, or email rimbeysynergy@gmail.com.

New teachers and more students at Rimbey elementary school BY TREENA MIELKE

Enrollment has gone up at Rimbey Elementary School and a third kindergarten class is now being offered. Principal Jodi Bramfield said the student population has increased from 388 to 417 students. New teachers to Rimbey elementary school are Stephanie Jennings, Grade 1, Landon Hatch, Grade 6 and Deirdre Aubie who also

teaches Grade 6. RES is continuing its focus on enhancing literacy for all students with a specific focus on struggling readers, said Bramfield. “This year, all teachers will be trained in a specialized program called Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI),” she said. “LLl is a small group, supplementary intervention system designed for children who find reading and writing

difficult. It is designed to improve their reading over a 14 18 week average.” The lead teachers who have taken the training are Kathleen Robertson and Cathy Coers and they will be training the rest of the staff over the course of this school year during the professional development days. The elementary school will hold its annual chili cookoff on Sept. 18 at Pas Ka Poo Park beginning at 5 p.m.

West Country Outreach School brings in professional hoop dancer BY TREENA MIELKE

West County Outreach School is kicking off the new year with an unusual presentation which is sure to inspire and motivate students. On Sept. 21, at 10:30 a.m. at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre the school will host a presentation by Teddy Anderson, a professional hoop dancer who has performed in China, Malaysia, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Brazil, Belize, and Holland as well as the United States and Canada.

Anderson shares his message of unity, fellowship and peace by dancing with up to 30 hoops at one time Anderson’s performance includes a native prayer, a song on the native flute, two hoop dance demonstrations and detailed explanations of the stories behind each dance in keeping with respect for all people. Audience interaction is also included in the performance. In 2009, Anderson, who strives to give the message that everyone can be the change they want to see in the world, obtained a degree in child

and youth care in 2009. Alva Holliday, principal at West Country Outreach School in Rimbey said she had to book Anderson a year in advance as he is in high demand. She is looking forward to the presentation as a motivational tool for her students. “It will be a great message for the kids,” she said. The school’s welcome back pancake breakfast will be held Tuesday, Sept. 8 and the parent council annual general meeting will be held Monday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m.

On March 15, 2015, we lost our family member, Taylor Leverick in a motor vehicle accident. At just 16 years of age, Taylor was loving his life. He was enjoying school, spending time with his friends and family, his new job, and his truck that he was very proud of. The loss of Taylor has been devastating to our family. While we continue to search for ways to carry on without Taylor, we have been so blessed for the love and support of our extended family, friends, neighbours and community who have helped us in so many ways as we grieve. The visits, meals, flowers, and cards we have received have been appreciated more than we can possibly express. We are grateful to everyone who has supported us. It has been six months since Taylor’s accident and we would like to honour him in a way that he would feel proud of. Taylor received many transfusions in the hours following his accident and we would like to recognize the importance of blood donation by having a blood drive in his memory. This blood drive, called Taylor’s Drive, will be held in conjunction with upcoming Community Blood Clinics in Ponoka on September 28 and in Rimbey on October 26. We have blocked appointment times at both clinics specifically for those who would like to donate in his memory. Please call Shelley at 403-843-3694 or call /text 403-358-6259 to reserve an appointment time. You must be 17 years of age or older to donate. If you have any questions about blood donation, please call Canadian Blood Services at 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283) and a nurse will assist you. If you can’t make these dates or times please donate at another time/location and let us know that you made a donation in remembrance of Taylor. Thank you for helping us keep Taylor’s memory alive in our first Taylor’s Drive. Sincerely, Rob, Leanne and Thomas Leverick & McFadden families

JEFF’S FEATURES OF THE WEEK

The Rimbey Spartans high school football team easily swept home field with a victory against Buck Mountain school with a 50-6 win. Assistant coach Justin Valens said the game went well and the Spartans were well prepared. “We had practiced all week and they were confident going into it. It was a nice start for the season.” However, he said the game also gave coaching staff a chance to check out areas the team needs to work on. He noted there are several new players on

defense this year. The last few minutes of the Spartans first game of the season, held last Thursday, was played in the rain which continued throughout the season. However, Valens said the weather wasn’t much of a deterrent. “Last year we played our first game in the snow,” he said. The Spartans take on Breton in Breton next Wednesday. Last year Rimbey Spartans won Provincials defeating Mill Wood Christian Royals to bring home the title.

New teachers at Bentley school create positive energy BY TREENA MIELKE

Lane Moore, principal at Bentley Schools is back at his desk, ready to begin

a new year. Moore is looking forward to the year with his usual optimism and enthusiasm and notes new

teachers and new students are creating a great energy at the schools. “It’s very positive; lots of new energy this year,” he said. New teachers on board at Bentley high school for grades nine to 12 are math and physics teacher Kyle Brown, science and biology teacher, Jackie Shukin and English teacher Lauren Charanduk. While the school’s population has dropped slightly to 332 as some families have moved away, Moore is pleased to note 55 students have registered in the pre kindergarden program, far exceeding the estimated number of 41. The school’s hockey academy is going strong with a good number of students already registered.

Bentley high school teacher Jackie Shukin teaches grades nine to 12 science and biology.

The program runs for students from grades one to eight and incorporates the physical education and health option. Some of the other options offered at the school

include fine arts, foods, woodworking, golf, guitar, dance and musical theatre. There is also a student tech team. On Friday, Sept. 18 a welcome back breakfast,

Bentley best dressed yard competition winners announced on.

BY JUNE NORVILA

This year the yard of Wes and Norma Lowery was judged the 2015 winner of the Best Dressed Whole Yard competition in Bentley. "It (the yard) is a work in progress," Norma Lowery repeats many times. One of the very unique features of their yard is the sculptured boardwalk that they just finished that snakes alongside their west fence and was designed by Wes. Another thing that caught the judge's eye they said was the precise trimming of the front hedge. "That has been accomplished by Norma over a number of years," Wes said. "I will do it as long as I can," stated Norma about her hedge trimming. Wes looks after the lawn, sculptured boardwalk and the taller back hedge. Norma tackles the smaller front hedge and garden and front flowers. Despite the hailstorm of just two weeks before the judging, things came back well. The judge had commented that maybe they had missed the hail but the Lowery's said they had not. "It came back after the hail, but not to the point of where it was," said Norma. "The crabapple tree is Norma's 'Bonsai' tree," says Wes about the shape it has taken

It has been 34 years of improvements, renovations, insight and work on their double sized lot and they both love it. They had won Best Dressed Front Yard in 2013. "The competition was very close," said horticulture convener Dorothy Sherwood. "The winners won by just one or two points. Too bad the actual judging took place in the pouring rain. It was hard for the photographer to get good pictures of the entries. The judge couldn't make notes while at the yards but had to make her notes after she got back (to the curling rink) and out of the rain." Leslie and Ken Haarstad got Honorable Mention for Whole Yard. Named winner of the Best Front Yard was Kay Bearchell. Repeat winner of Best Back Yard was Melissa and Shawn Zarantonello, with Gordon and Lynn Currier receiving Honorable Mention. The judge was again Martha Krause from Bluffton, escorted by Marg Beddoes. Yard photographer was again Darrell Carrigan. Photos of the yards were on display inside the curling rink in the horticulture section during the fair. We had 10 fun-filled days in Alberta. We visited the Royal Tyrell Museum and took a hike learning the “Seven Wonders of the Badlands”. We had a free day to show our Quebec friends our farms and do a family activity. We participated in the Buck Lake Parade and watched the rodeo. The Quebec kids had never seen anything like this before! We travelled to Calgary to visit Canada Olympic Park where we toured the Sports Hall of Fame and tried the summer-time luge course. The next day we travelled to Banff to tour the town and take the Gondola up Sul-

phur Mountain. What a great view! We also visited Leduc #1 Discovery Centre and learned about Alberta’s Oil Industry. We toured and shopped West Edmonton Mall and swam in the waterpark. We visited the local attractions; Ponderosa City and EmTe Town, where we had a steak supper and watched the Alberta Mounted Shooting Club demonstrate their great skills. We visited the Reynolds Museum and took some great group pictures at the Battle Lake 4-H Centre. We all got a true camping experience — huddling around a smoky fire in the pouring rain! We enjoyed fishing, games, square dancing and a pancake breakfast. At the end of these 10 days, many friendships were made and the Quebec members sadly returned

home to anxiously await the reunion when the Winfield 4-H participants and chaperones travelled to Quebec on August 5. We toured Quebec farms, museums, Old Montreal, a hydro generating station, Calypso Waterpark and the Parliament buildings in Ottawa. We sampled the great local cuisine, ziplined, rode the metro, and even did a haunted tour in Montreal! Our Alberta / Quebec exchange has been a trip of a lifetime — fun, adventurous and a knowledgeable experience. Thank you to all the families, friends, businesses, County, and community members and organizations for your amazing support. And thank you to 4-H Canada and the Department of Canadian Heritage for making this opportunity possible.

Fall symposium to present options for families with aging members JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Many families face the challenge of raising children in conjunction with taking care of aging parents, leaving them feeling physically and mentally drained. To help families of such circumstances know where to access the right help, a symposium — Where Do We Go From Here? — will be held at the Sylvan Lake Community Centre this fall. A wide range of resources and contact information on caregivers, housing and supportive living will be presented at the Oct. 7 event, with around 35 groups having been invited. Discussion topics could include accommodation arrangements, home care, stress management, communication, conflict resolution, family dynamics, self care and time management. Attendees will be given

clear information on accommodation processes for their family members, said Sylvan Lake Seniors Association program co-ordinator Maryan Weenink. “People are under the assumption that, to go into the Manor or the Lodge, you have to go through home care and get an assessment done, and that’s not the process. They are independent,” she said. “A lot of them just assume that it’s all together, but it’s very separate.” Different living accommodations and what to expect in caregiving will be explained as well. Weenink said the information event is much needed in town, as the more people in the know, the better they can help and provide for their family members. “It will also prepare them as they get older to know where to go when they themselves are facing those needs.”

Seniors housing complex moves ahead BY TREENA MIELKE

A planned 80-room seniors’ housing complex is moving closer to reality. Paul McLauchlin, chairman of Rimoka housing board along with the building committee met with Mike Leathwood, assistant deputy minister of the housing division at the Ministry of Seniors for the government of Alberta last week. “We are getting closer to going to tender,” said McLauchlin. “We are in the process of transferring the title of lot number one to the seniors’ housing.” McLauchlin said the access road to the housing complex has been graded and is ready for construction. McLauchlin likes the conceptual plans of the two-storey complex, noting he is hoping to begin construction this fall. “It is still 18 months to two years from occupancy,” he said. The seniors’ facility is to have 72 bachelor suites and eight one bedroom suits, as well as common rooms and an elevator. “It has been really well thought out,” he said. A public meeting to discuss the design of the building is to be held Sept. 16 at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre at 5:30 p.m. A meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on that same day at Parkland Manor to discuss the plans with the residents.

A conceptual drawing of the proposed new seniors’ complex planned for Rimbey.
