Mayor seeks meeting to boost foot ferry
I
ANNUAL CIVIC conference takes place next week.
BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN
Nanaimo’s mayor wants a non-compete agreement and assurances from B.C. Premier Christy Clark that a private passenger-only ferry won’t come under attack by B.C. Ferries. Mayor Bill McKay plans to meet with the premier during the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention next week in Vancouver to discuss Island Ferries’ proposed foot-ferry service between Nanaimo and Vancouver.
The foot ferry company, which has been searching for final investment since October 2013, hopes to win $14 million from the federal government’s New Building Canada Fund and wants the province to prioritize its project application. The money would be the impetus for the ferry, according to Dave Marshall, Island Ferries’ spokesman and director of marine operations, who said the federal government is intrigued by the application, but wants to see interest from the province. McKay will call on Clark to endorse Island Ferries’ service and prioritize its application. He’ll also call for a non-compete agreement that neither the province

nor B.C. Ferries will start up a foot ferry, as well as assurances Island Ferries will not be under attack by the company. When a company is getting provincial subsidies, those dollars should not be used to compete against private enterprise, McKay said. “Imagine what it’d look like if you’re taking a heavily subsidized private, quasipublic organization like B.C. Ferries and you’re trying to compete with them with no subsidy and all of a sudden you find out that ... they’re having a half-price passenger sale on and that’s the business you’re in,” he said. Marshall said the company is hopeful the province will prioritize its application.

“If you are playing dominoes and you put all the dominoes on end, that’s the first domino that kicks over and all of them fall after that. It’s a big deal,” he said of the $14 million. When asked why Island Ferries should get taxpayer money, Marshall pointed out “the other private ferry company that operates in this province” receives federal and provincial money. It’s unknown when the meeting will be held with the premier. Todd Stone, B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, was not made available to comment and his ministry did not respond to questions about the application or the mayor’s requests. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Candidates support foot ferry, Island rail BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN
Nanaimo-Ladysmith federal election candidates see major infrastructure projects, such as the foot passenger ferry and passenger rail as priorities for the region. Paul Manly, Green Party candidate, said a foot passenger ferry will be viable if it’s fast and inexpensive, but all ferry services here should receive federal government subsidies as in the Maritime provinces. “Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland have a good ferry subsidy based on their deal with Confederation,” Manly said. Tim Tessier, Liberal candidate, said ferry service to the mainland is “our highway.” He is among a growing number of commuters For more election coverage, see page 3. w h o re p re sent a changing model for ferry service that provincial and federal governments and private business should be partnering to make happen. “While I love taking the ferry out of here and it’s a wonderful ride, it’s a model that was designed decades ago and we have to move forward,” Tessier said. A foot ferry dock represents an important transportation hub to other public transport, said Sheila Malcolmson, NDP candidate. “If it’s a private ferry, then it’s an easy one for the federal government to partner with the city on the dock infrastructure and especially this transportation hub,” Malcolmson said. Mark MacDonald, Conservative Party candidate, said he has worked on the funding for Island Ferry Services’ $63-million project since 2013, starting as Nanaimo Daily News managing editor. “I believe, as far as infrastructure goes, that this is the single most important thing that would benefit the economy in the NanaimoLadysmith riding,” MacDonald said. Candidates differ on rail’s viability

Tessier also agrees with Manly and Malcolmson that Island passenger rail is viable and important to the economy, tourism and to future public transit, but added the high costs of refurbishing the entire E&N line means it will likely have to be done in stages. Malcolmson said there is strong support for a public transportation system “to help us deal with climate change into the future.” Manly said arguments against the service are based on previous scheduling, which ran as a tourism, rather than a commuter, service. MacDonald said Island passenger rail is only viable if subsidized by commercial rail traffic and said the Island Corridor Foundation, which owns the track and stations, needs to present a workable business plan.

Society ready to put down roots
I
NaNaimo commuNity Gardens wins $40,000 grant to set up at Beban Park. By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
Nanaimo Community Gardens Society is in a race to rake in votes. Nanaimo Mid-Island Co-op announced Tuesday that the Nanaimo Community Gardens Society has won $40,000 from the Co-op Community Spaces Program for new greenhouses and could get another $25,000 if it collects the most votes in a 12-day cyber race this month. The dollars are added reassurance for the society, which is putting down roots in Beban Park after securing a lease with the city and a spot in the park’s long-term vision. Four years ago, it faced uncertainty about its future home. After more than a decade of food production and educa-
tion on a Hammond Bay property owned by the Regional District of Nanaimo, the organization was given notice it had to move to allow expansion of a sewage treatment plant. Beban Park was eyed as an alternative location, but it’s been in a master plan process that’s put any new developments on hold for the past two years. “Everything took twice as long as we thought it would but we’re here,” said Pat Wells, spokeswoman for the society, which she adds can see its dreams more clearly. The hope is to build one or two greenhouses at the bowling greens near Beban Park Golf Course. The society sees the potential to offer workshops and educate people about
how to grow their own food and considers it the right location, close to downtown and on a bus route. Parks and Recre a t i o n C o m m i s sion chairman and city councillor Ian Thorpe called the location and Coop’s announcement extremely exciting, wishing the society the best of luck. “I can assure you
that the City of Nanaimo looks forward to supporting this group,” he said. The tally of online votes will determine the winner of the contest, which runs Sept. 14-25 and will see one of four Canadian projects pull in an additional $25,000. Housing bridges generation gap

TILLICUM LELUM marks 50 years. By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
Marguerit James, 71, leans back against the red couch cushions in Salish Lelum’s common room, eyes crinkling at the corners. Of all the places she’s been, this one is the best, she says. The housing is one of four built in Nanaimo as part of a partnership between the City of Nanaimo and the B.C. government and is run by Tillicum Lelum Friendship Centre for elders and youth. It’s affordable for the former Penelakut Island resident, safe, and Tillicum Lelum’s vision to have young people and elders help each other “just like in our culture,” works, she said. Open schools a worthy goal School is back in session and certain parents around the city are taking on an extracurricular assignment – saving a school. The Nanaimo school district has identified Rutherford Elementary as a facility it will consider closing to balance the budget. Woodlands Secondary, Woodbank Primary and North Cedar Intermediate schools are also being considered for closure, as in previous years. For Rutherford parents, though, the news came as a rude surprise around report card time last spring. Unfortunately, these surprises could mar many a school year to come. As education costs rise relative to the government’s per-student funding and Nanaimo’s population ticks only slowly upward, trustees simply won’t have alternatives. The new school board dropped the previous board’s 10-year plan in the recycling bin, leaving us with a more unpredictable facilities strategy. This isn’t the wrong way, necessarily, but if closures are coming, then it’s sensible to have a long-term plan with connected steps. We hope that kind of forethought becomes part of the dialogue, even though parents, rightly, will want to focus on their kids and the virtues of their neighbourhood school. It seems a shame to be talking about closures the first week of classes, but there is never a good time to raise this subject. It’s better that Nanaimo’s trustees – many of whom campaigned on community consultation – are leaving many months for discussion and debate. We expect parents will reject closure, criticize, argue, and propose alternatives. It will make for better decision-making, and it will teach kids that it’s better to be active than passive. We want our schools open, while still maintaining and improving the learning environment for all our students. That’s this year’s extracurricular assignment, and yes, this is going to be on the test.

Megastorm madness isn’t an isolated case. A couple of weeks before that, a temporary construction bump on the Lion’s Gate Bridge deck caused panic and rage. Aggravated by a couple of accidents on the alternate route, and fed by hysterical media, drivers of West Van luxury cars were white-knuckled. Traffic choked the region that recently declined to pay a bit more for road improvements. In both cases, people outside Lotus Land were muttering: Welcome to our world. This is pertinent to the federal election. Are you competent to save for your retirement with RRSPs and a tax-free savings account, or do you need the government to do it for you, by force? Are you capable of managing your own child care, or should the nanny state create a hugely subsidized system, which has already failed in Quebec, from coast to coast? Are you ready for the day when the machine stops? ◆ Tom Fletcher is columnist and legislature reporter for Black Press.

Climate a root cause of refugee crisis To the Editor,
Remember when Justin Trudeau was accused of “committing sociology” when he suggested we look at the root causes behind terrorist attacks? Seems like Stephen Harper now shares an affinity for sociology in claiming we must acknowledge the root causes behind the Syrian crisis, ideologically predetermined by himself to be “Islamic terror”/ISIS, against whom only military efforts can prevail. However if he were to commit serious sociology he would learn that Syria suffered from an unprecedented four-year drought from 2006-10 that destroyed 60 per cent of its farms, killed 80 per cent of its livestock and drove a million and a half rural Syrians into overcrowded cities where they combined with another million and a half Iraqi refugees fleeing war. Poverty, inequality, overcrowding, corrupt and inept leadership exploded into an ongoing civil war in 2011. There have been many forecasts that climate change would lead to mass migrations from areas that could no longer feed their human populations leading to social unrest and chaos. If Canada were to take climate change seriously and do its
part to reduce greenhouse gases we may be able to mitigate future desperate migrations. Right now we could do our part by quickly taking in more refugees, signing the UN Arms Trade Treaty to help control the spread of lethal weapons to rogue regimes and learning the lesson that sociology teaches: war does not make anything better.
Liz Fox Lantzville
To the Editor,
The tragic picture of a Syrian child, drowned in his family’s attempts to escape conflict in Syria, hopefully will alert all our consciences to act and respond to the Syrian refugee crisis. Canada is no longer seen on the world stage as the compassionate country it once was. The immigration of 60,000 Vietnamese 40 years ago who have integrated and become fine citizens is an example of positive immigration policy. We are aware of the government’s encouragement of the investor class of immigrant in contrast to its reluctance to share the world’s responsibility for humanitarian immigration. As practising Christians, we don’t see the reaching out to those in need.
Re: Port authority passenger fees set to increase in autumn, Aug. 3. All the reasons the port authority is using to charge us even more for taking the ferry or a seaplane do not hold water. A Marine Domain Awareness System, in layman’s terms, simply means keeping a watchful eye for trouble.
When maximum leverage tactics are needed; the safety and security card always seems to be played by government or agency. Stating the extra 10-cents per ticket fee is needed for round-the-clock response of two patrol boats makes me also wonder, don’t they have cellphones or pagers now? Hasn’t the harbour been protected 24/7 up to now?
PREC “What I promise ...... I will deliver.”
We are asking government to revise immigration policies and practices, and have Canada take its share in resettling needy immigrants such as those from Syria.

Port fees aren’t about safety, they’re just another tax To the Editor,
Maybe if the port authority did not spend that big $24 million on a cruise ship terminal and cozy office space, which is attracting only three boats this year, passengers would not have to be charged 25 cents by the port authority every time we just need to venture off our Island.

Nanaimo’s Gold and Shadow perform at the Vault Cafe on Friday (Sept. 11) at 8 p.m. They will also perform at the Buzz Coffee House on Saturday (Sept. 12) at 8 p.m.

fter two years of working away, a Nanaimo band finally has an album of their own. Last week, art rock band Gold and Shadow released their debut fulllength album, Torch to iTunes. “I think people can expect something that is really dynamic and really exciting,” said lead vocalist Dane Letourneau. “It has got a lot of variety on it.” On Friday (Sept. 11), Gold and Shadow will be performing at the Vault Café as part of the Gold and Shadow 2015 tour,
which promotes the new record. The tour will take the band through eastern British Columbia, Alberta and into Saskatchewan. “It is really refreshing to think that this record will reach more ears than just the hometown audience,” Letourneau said. “We definitely play to Nanaimo a lot and we are really excited to get outside of the city limits.” Gold and Shadow’s debut album has two predominant themes, according to Letourneau. “The record plays with two main themes, light and darkness,” Letour-
neau said. “The other is purification or redemption. It is this idea of struggling with various things, but needed, and realizing that there is a hope or light at the end of tunnel.” Gold and Shadow was formed roughly six years ago after meeting at a church. “We just ended up playing some music that I had been working on one night,” Letourneau said. “Then it kind of developed from there.” Letourneau says that when drummer Wes Holmes joined the band four years ago everything changed. “He and our bassist Jesse [Janzen] just kind
of really hit it off and created this incredible rhythmic backbone that changed the whole course of what we did,” Letourneau said.
Quickfacts GOLD AND SHADOW released its debut record, Torch on sept. 4
Although Torch is the Gold and Shadow’s debut record, its music was included on a 2012 Seva Canada charity album called, All Together Now, which also features songs by the Great Lake Swimmers.
Last month, Gold and Shadow released the music video for the new album’s single, Half Moon. The video was directed by Nanaimo photographer Matt Lineker and was filmed mostly in an abandoned warehouse in Duncan. “It was his first-ever video but the guy is enormously talented and he did a fantastic job,” he said. “We had a blast. It was kind of like learning things for the first time all together.” Half Moon is a visual representation of Torch’s main lyrical themes. The video shows a moonstruck girl inside a warehouse confronting her fears.
“We wanted to do a very visual representation of the lyrical themes of the video,” Letourneau said. “The video plays with that theme as she explores these abandoned buildings and confronts these black clad dancers that represent her darker side.” Gold and Shadow perform with The Stacks at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. The band will also perform at the Buzz Coffee House with the Morning Show on Saturday (Sept. 12) at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10. Studio celebrates four decades By NicholaS PeScod The News BulleTiN
In 1975, disco was thriving, Saturday Night Live made its television debut, the Vietnam War ended, Bill Bennett became premier and seat belts were not yet mandatory in British Columbia. That same year, the Artisans’ Studio opened in Nanaimo. On Saturday (Sept. 12) the studio will be celebrating its 40th anniversary with an open house, which will feature Nanaimo bars and a draw for a gift certificate. “We are hoping that some of our older members along
with the general population will come and see us,” said longtime studio member Gill Kanachowski, “Nanaimo has been very good to us over the years.” The Artisans’ Studio cooperative moved around to various locations before settling at its current location, 70 Bastion St., in 1977. Today, the studio has 14 working members. “We have gone through thick and thin. It is only due to a very good loyal membership,” Kanachowski said. In the early days we never had any grants so it was purely our own work and us running

the studio and we have survived.” Kanachowski, a member of the Artisans’ Studio for 38 years, says downtown Nanaimo has changed significantly since 1975. “Downtown is quite vibrant now,” she said. “You can see a big difference as you walk around.” The studio is looking forward to the next four decades. “We just hope to keep going,” Kanachowski said. The open house runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. For more information, please call 250-753-6151. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Then wearing it for almost the rest of the adventure and having almost everyone take it for a spin. I always thought I could pull off being a redhead. Then again, maybe not. Whether it was the whale spotting while aboard the Confederation Ferry (from PEI to Nova Scotia), or jumping for joy when meeting the world’s largest lobster in Shediac, NB, or just taking a scenic run along the St. John river in Fredericton, NB, I wouldn’t say I’m a veteran when it comes to the lay of the land in the Atlantic provinces, but the next time I go, it won’t be my first rodeo. And if the 2016 Subaru Forester is my steer, I’m heading in the right direction. With or without crying kids. The 2016 Forester 2.5i has a starting MSRP of $25,995 (excluding delivery and taxes.) The 2.0XT starts at $33,495 (excluding delivery and taxes.)
Safety Tip: The start of the school year is a great time to review the rules of the road and your kids’ route to and from school. If you’re dropping them off in a school zone, make sure they exit the car on the side closest to the sidewalk.

Collectors will cherish DB7 Zagato
ISLAND EXPRESS BUS
The 2002-03 Aston Martin DB7 Zagato is sure to be a collector’s item one day. Aston Martin revived its DB series in 1994 with the DB7. They perfected it in 2002 with the introduction of the Zagato model at the Paris Auto Show, where it immediately sold out. A fitting homage to the 1960s DB4GT Zagato, the DB7 Zagato rode on a shortened chassis, and was powered by Aston Martin’s 5.9-litre V-12.

Clippers set out to go one step further I
Jr. B Bucs skate onto home ice
SEASON PREVIEW: junior A hockey team begins 2015-16. BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN
The Nanaimo Clippers climbed so close as runners-up for the cup last season. As the 2015-16 B.C. Hockey League campaign begins, the Clippers are going back to the beginning in some ways. But they look forward to what’s ahead as they try to take a step further. “Some of the guys have maybe a bitter taste from last year, coming so close…” said Sheldon Rempal, Clippers forward. “All the returning guys can feel that we have a good enough team here to get back there and win.” It’s still early September, and the cup won’t be awarded anytime soon. But starting Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 12-13) on the road against the Powell River Kings, the Clippers can start winning some games and putting themselves in position, said Mike Vandekamp, the team’s coach and general manager. “We know we’re going to make mistakes early in the season, that’s normal,” he said. “We just want to make sure that we’re playing with lots of spirit and lots of passion. And as the season goes along, if we stay committed to the whole program we’ll learn how to play a stronger team game as we go.” Yanni Kaldis, all-star defenceman, said practices this fall have been intense and said everyone’s been working hard. “So I think we’re definitely ready for it to start…” he said. “That’s what you’ve been waiting for all summer and it’s finally getting here.” Here’s a look at this year’s Nanaimo Clippers:

Chris Dodero, who showed scoring punch in the pre-season and brings, speed, skill and tenacity. Other new faces include D.J. Petruzzelli, another all-around forward who is making the transition from midget, and Matt Creamer, a power forward who will be able to score. Returnee Brendan Shane could surprise fans as he gets a chance to play a larger role. Vandekamp said the Clippers will stress defence-first hockey and trust that goals will come through hard work at both ends of the rink.
FORWARDS
Leading the group of returning forwards is Rempal, who led the Clippers with 29 goals last year. The creative, competitive winger is capable of 35-40 in his last year of junior. “I know it’s a big number, but it’s always fun to see what I can do year after year,” he said. The Clippers expect another returning vet, Devin Brosseau, to bounce back with a big year after being limited by injury in 2014-15. Two newcomers who slot into the top six are Matt Hoover, a feisty, two-way forward, and

The Nanaimo Buccaneers started with a tough loss and a tight win, and now they’re getting ready for the next challenge. The Bucs play their home opener this Thursday (Sept. 10) against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings. The city’s Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League team opened the regular season last Friday with a 7-0 loss to the defendingchampion Campbell River Storm, then responded the next night with a 4-3 overtime victory over the Glacier Kings. Jordan Levesque scored the game-winning goal Saturday, Trent Bell had two goals in the game, Billy Walters had a goal and two assists and Alex Orth made 27 saves for the win. The Bucs look forward to their home opener. “It’s nice to finally get a game at home and see the fans out there and get some energy from them,” said Dan Lemmon, Bucs coach. “Other than that, it’s going to be just another game for the boys and we’re going to try to keep it as simple as we can and make sure that we can get that win at home.” GAME ON … The Bucs and Glacier Kings face off at 7:15 p.m. at the NIC.

Back to school means back to the gridiron. High school football won’t waste any time getting started, as the AA varsity and junior varsity teams from John Barsby Secondary School and Nanaimo District Secondary School kick off their preseasons this week. Rob Stevenson, coach of the twotime defending AA varsity B.C. champion Barsby Bulldogs, said he’s excited that football season’s back. “The coaches and players are hungry to go out and mea-

sure themselves again,” he said. He set up a challenging pre-season for his program, with the juniors hosting St. Thomas More Collegiate on Wednesday after press time and the varsity ’Dawgs travelling to play the Vernon Panthers on Saturday (Sept. 12).
“We picked a couple of opponents for our JVs and our varsity that are going to expose us as much as them and give us a road map forward from there,” Stevenson said. He said the AA varsity Bulldogs are “coming along great” and said the immediate tasks are to nar-
row the gap between the first-team players and backups, and also cross-train players at other positions on the football field. The NDSS Islanders juniors visit Robert Bateman today (Sept. 10) and the AA varsity Isles play at Earl Marriott on Friday.

V.I. Raiders facing first-place Sun The V.I. Raiders had a whole bye week to brace for the task at hand. The city’s junior football team is getting ready for its toughest game of the regular season, a road trip
to Kelowna to play the B.C. Football Conference’s firstplace Okanagan Sun. The Raiders lost 27-3 when the teams met a month ago. “I thought we played them pretty tough the first
time they came down here, especially in the first half,” said Jerome Erdman, Raiders coach. “It will be the exact same thing – emphasizing the fundamentals and stopping the big play.”
GAME ON … The Raiders and Sun play Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Apple Bowl. V.I.’s next home game is Sept. 19 when the Westshore Rebels visit Caledonia Park for a 2 p.m. kickoff.

Nanaimo Clippers goalie Jonathan Reinhart makes a save during exhibition play last week.
Defence a strength DEFENCE
The Clippers have the luxury of being able to ice a six-man defence corps of returning players, if they so choose. “We have a lot of vets back there,” Kaldis said. “We should be able to take care of things while the forwards get some chemistry going, figure out the lines completely. Until they get going, we should be able to hold the other teams down to only a couple goals a game.” Kaldis was the league’s second-highest-scoring defenceman a year ago, and along with Edwin Hookenson, Kale Bennett and Ryan Coghlan – all of them impactful at both ends of the ice – it makes for a potentially potent top four. The other returnees are Jordan Low and Sean Buchanan. Newcomer Adam Pilotte brings skating, compete level and a lot of upside, and he and Louis-Philippe Pagé can anticipate a share of the minutes on the blueline. “I think [defence] is the strength of our team, but it’s a hard position to play and first-year players have to adapt and adjust,” the coach said. GOALTENDING
Jonathan Reinhart was brought in early in the off-season to be the starting goalie. The Clippers like the netminder’s size, work ethic and maturity. “We expect him to do well,” Vandekamp said. There were still three goalies on the roster at press time, but Jakob Walter is expected to make up the other half of Nanaimo’s goaltending tandem. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

After an extremely brave battle with cancer, Martha passed away at NRGH at 4:15 a.m. on August 29th. Her loving and much loved husband of 39 years, Colin, was by her side, and now misses her terribly. Also grieving are Martha's brother Ed, niece Kathy, nephew Brian (Wendy), and stepson David (Gabriella), along with great nieces Tanya and Katrina, great nephews Richard and David, and grandchildren Katherine and Dale. Particular delights for Martha were her great great nephew Auron, and her great grandchildren Riley and Cash. After a sister-like relationship for 60 years, Martha will be greatly missed by her special friend Noella ( John) who is very much saddened at this trying time. Thanks go to both, for their continuing support. Relatives and friends in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and England were also saddened to hear the news. Martha's positive outlook throughout her illness was an inspiration to all who came into contact with her. Many thanks go the Angels on floor three for the wonderful respect and kindness shown to Martha, Colin and family. At Martha's request there will be no service. A private afternoon tea will be held at a later time. For All we Know For all we know this may only be a dream We come and go like the ripples on a stream So, love me tonight, tomorrow was made for some Tomorrow may never come, for all we know. ~ unknown

Brown, Ethan Brody
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ethan Brown (19) on Monday, August 31, 2015. Ethan fought a hard battle against brain cancer with the support of family, friends and the community; yet through it all he chose to live life to the fullest, enjoying each opportunity he could. He is now free of all pain and discomfort, enjoying his new home in heaven; where he met up with his Nonna, his Uncle Wayne, his Grandma Honey and Big Poppa. Ethan’s unique and wonderful ways made being around him a joy. Although he was a man of few words, when he spoke he made it count. He was known as an enthusiastic sport fan, especially his passion for hockey. As a die hard Bruins fan, a NMH player, ref and coach, Ethan was well known for encouraging others, and saying yes to any extra ice time he could get! He is gone but never forgotten, treasured in our hearts and missed by all whose lives he impacted. He leaves behind his Mom and friend, Cindy Brown, his brothers, and hockey partners, Tyson and Kieran Brown, Poppa (Marvin Skytte), Aunt Cheri Brown, Uncle Charlie, Uncle Bill and Aunt Lori Olson, cousins Taylor, Jessica, Cody, Brandon, Christian, Aleisha, Ashlee and Hope, his many great aunts and uncles, cousins, Best friend Mac and all his other close friends and family. A celebration of Ethan’s life will be held at Nanaimo Christian School, 198 Holland Rd on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 1:00 pm. In honor of Ethan, please wear your hockey jerseys, t-shirts or other sports wear to the service. In lieu of flowers, a trust account has been set up at Coast Capital Savings Credit Union in the name of Cindy Brown, in trust.

Maffeo Sutton Park Improvement Plan Public Input Sessions
The original Maffeo Sutton Park Improvement Plan was developed in 2008 with the Spirit Square opening in 2009 as the first phase of park improvements. However, since 2008, the park has expanded and the downtown waterfront context has changed. Nanaimo City Council and Parks Recreation & Environment staff are keen to hear your input as we move forward in updating the plans for Maffeo Sutton Park. What would make Maffeo Sutton Park better and what should the priorities for improvements be? There are many ways you can communicate your ideas are for the park: • Attend an open house • Fill out an online survey • Email your opinions & input to askpre@nanaimo.ca or call 250-756-5200. • Participate in flag displays on park bridges. Open house materials will be available online for those who cannot attend. www.cnan.ca/maffeosutton

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To Mike, Harry and Jonathan at Sharecost. I am so grateful for the expert estimating of my driveway chip and the super, efficient loading help.
BEEF Take your plastic and styrofoam cups home with you and stop tossing them to the side of the road and in the ditches. It looks disgusting and makes our city look dirty.
BEEF To motorists and motorcyclists who use Uplands Drive between Rutherford and Turner roads as a racetrack.Seniors and kids cross Uplands to the mall and your excessive speed is upsetting and dangerous.
BOUQUET To the group sitting on the patio at Original Joe’s who bought lunch for everyone in our section. It was a wonderful gesture and I want to thank you all for your generosity and great surprise.
BOUQUET To Christine at MacNutt Enterprises who took the time to estimate my rock needs, even though you didn’t have what I needed. BEEF To the board for destroying the best little non-profit in Nanaimo. BOUQUET To all the volunteers who worked at the VIEX and had the money donated to Loaves and Fishes Food Bank. BEEF Thousands spent on pavement at the very end of Spruston Road with next to no traffic, yet in Cedar with heavy volume, can’t seem to have a few potholes filled. BOUQUET To VIEX and TD Canada Trust for the inaugural dance competition. You brought one little girl tremendous excitement in her dance career. BEEF In the water restrictions, why do car dealerships still wash cars with a hose? BOUQUET To the body shop staff at Nanaimo Toyota, especially Steve, Jeremy and Morgan for their patience with stubborn stains on my car seats. They assured me they could get them out and they did. BEEF To the health authority for its abnormal policies and procedures compared to the mainland. No wonder the RNs and LPNs are leaving. BOUQUET To Phil Gonyer from 460 Realty. You sold our properly quickly while taking great care to provide the highest quality of service. You fulfilled our every expectation.
BEEF To the people who put others down who don’t have fancy cars, expensive clothing or a perfect life. We’re all human and deserve an equal amount of respect. BOUQUET To the lady in the red Mustang who saw the confused Albertan family trying to park at Tim Hortons and surprised us by treating us to our breakfast -- this typifies the kindness and generosity of Nanaimo. BEEF To the owners of what they consider the premier gym in Nanaimo for lack of maintenance of equipment and little concern over healthy air quality. BOUQUET To the Pryde Vista Golf Course for its great customer service. It was very much appreciated to receive such excellent attention when I was stung by an angry wasp while on the course this week. BEEF To whoever ordered the killing of the baby bears. He or she is the one who should be fired.
BEEF To the manager who just shrugged his shoulders and told us to expect appliances to break down these days, after our dishwasher broke after less than three years. BOUQUET To all the gas stations in Ladysmith for selling gas for 10 cents a litre less than Nanaimo. BEEF To the person who took the $100 accidentally left in the bank machine at RBC Woodgrove in mid August. The money was left by an elderly woman fighting cancer. You should have turned it in. BOUQUET To the fellow who gave me a hand when my van quit at Bowen and Northfield roads. Most drivers just blow their horns and yell. BEEF To the people who cleared the bush and fenced off the land next to their house at the end of Rosstown Road. The land doesn’t belong to you and what you did is illegal.
BOUQUET To drivers who stop for me to cross a very busy Labieux Road. With three paper routes along this road, I have to cross the street a dozen times, without any crosswalks. BEEF To a neighbours on each side of me who complain when I practise with my bagpipes. BOUQUET To the Colliery protectors. The park honours Alec Virosko, Jim Borserio and Rod Glen, our pioneers who worked so hard for our children and we seniors. Too bad council doesn’t remember them now. BEEF To those who insist on using the term hacker in a negative context. Please, use cracker or black hat hacker instead. BOUQUET To my mom Trish. Thank you for everything. If all the moms in the world were flowers I’d pick you. BEEF To the ferry driver who has repeatedly freaked on passengers. You’ve done this multiple times over the summer. BOUQUET To all the people on my paper routes who had cold water for me this summer during the heat wave. Thank you to those who let me use their washroom. BEEF To the noisy motorcycles constantly invading our downtown core daytime and especially later when other workers and tourists are sleeping. Not good PR for Nanaimo or yourself. BOUQUET To the women working in the circulation department at the News Bulletin. Your concern for carriers is greatly appreciated, whether it be regarding the heat wave, dogs coming after us, or fixing payroll mistakes. BOUQUET To athletes who play fair.
Submit your own Beef or Bouquet Beefs & Bouquets is a free forum to give thanks or express views on issues and events. The News Bulletin reserves the right to edit or refuse submissions. Length is limited to 40 words and two submissions per person per week. A winner will be selected at random to receive a floral bouquet from Turley’s Florist and Potting Shed. Mail or deliver to the News Bulletin, 777B Poplar St., Nanaimo, V9S 2H7 or e-mail to bulletinboard@nanaimobulletin.com. Fax to 250-753-0788.
BOUQUET To Riverside Market in Southgate Mall. Does anyone remember old-fashioned, thick-cut fish and chips cooked to perfection? They’re back.
________________________________________________________________________________
BEEF To B.C. Stats. Your so-called unemployment rate is just a lot of the usual creative numbers game that still does not truly show the real reality.
________________________________________________________________________________
BOUQUET To Brian Jacobs and his daughter for going out of their way to return the cash that was accidently dropped in the parking lot at the Westwood Tennis Club. Your kindness was greatly appreciated.

Meals program needs drivers A hot meal can mean not only nourishment for the body but also nourishment for the soul. When Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver a meal to clients in Nanaimo and Lantzville, the driver’s smiling face may be the only contact that person has during the day, said Sharon Brown, president of Nanaimo Meals on Wheels. “Drivers get attached to their route and it is so rewarding,” said Brown. “It’s a hot meal and a smile.” The organization is desperately seeking drivers to help deliver meals to clients in Nanaimo and Lantzville. Meals on Wheels tries to match drivers to the routes in the areas they live in to make it easier. All volunteers need is a valid driver’s licence and to attend an orientation session. Drivers receive a mileage stipend of 50 cents per kilometre. To volunteer, or for more information, please call 250-7531300.
