BC supports refugees for several years. Last year Ottawa admitted about 36,000 immigrants to B.C., and about 1,500 were refugees. “Our job isn’t to decide who’s coming in when,” Clark said. “That’s their job. Our job is to make sure we’re ready.”

Aerial view of Za’atri camp for Syrian refugees in Jordan, July 18, 2013. By Tom Fletcher The B.C. government has added $1 million to its budget for helping refugees settle in the province, and has opened a tollfree information line for those who want to sponsor people fleeing violence in Syria. Premier Christy Clark announced the funding in Vancouver Tuesday, along with a toll-free information number for community groups and private sponsors at 1-877-9526914. Clark said the province currently spends about $4 million a year to support the federal program that settles immigrants in B.C. The extra funds will be reserved for assistance to Syrian refugees, she said. “It is our belief that it’s just not good enough to totally open our doors,” Clark said. “We have to make sure that when refugees get here, we’re doing everything that we can to help them realize the Canadian dream and find their way as seamlessly as possible in to British Columbia.” The one-time investment will be used for trauma counselling, help for for groups of citizens to navigate the refugee sponsorship process, foreign credential recognition and community and employer supports including matching training funds for those committed to hiring a Syrian refugee. Clark said all the federal parties have indicated they want to increase refugee intake in response to the Syrian civil war, and B.C. has supported that position

The Weekend View

B.C. Views: Society slides into helpessness by Tom Fletcher Of all the immature, ignorant whining that came out of the recent power failure in the Lower Mainland, one example summed up the decline of our urban culture for me. It wasn’t the people who flooded 9-1-1 with calls demanding to know when their power would be restored, or complaining about their freezers. It wasn’t those on Twitter insisting BC Hydro pay for food that went bad. It was another social media moment. With part of his community without electricity for a third day, Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart went to his Facebook page, which has a wide following. There he pleaded with residents to stop phoning city hall to demand that a local big-box supermarket provide milk and eggs. Power had been restored at the store only a few hours before, in the dead of night, and it’s safe to assume that all stores were working flat out to restock perishables. Where do people get the notion that city hall, or whatever allpowerful nanny state they imagine, controls grocery stores? How do they conclude that in the midst of the worst electrical grid failure on record, BC Hydro is going to address their personal situation above all others? Vancouver broadcast media weren’t much better. Their big focus was that

BC Hydro’s website crashed, so people couldn’t call it up on their smartphones and find out instantly when their power would be back on. Some even questioned why wireless power meters didn’t help. Perhaps these were the same journalists who fed the tinfoil-hat superstition about their signals. The facts should be known by now. After an extremely dry spring and summer, a high wind shattered trees and took down more wires and poles than BC Hydro had ever coped with before. Further damage was done within areas that were already blacked out, leaving overtaxed technicians unable to accurately assess the full extent of it. In Coquitlam and elsewhere, poles were down in areas too rain-saturated for heavy repair trucks to reach. Yes, there were some too-optimistic repair estimates given out, in response to the constant screeching for instant answers. About 15 years ago I experienced my worst power outage in the Fraser Valley. In a semi-rural area with little backup grid capacity (since greatly improved), my family went three days without power. This was in winter, due to wind and freezing rain followed by snow and cold. Trickles of water kept pipes from freezing, and the gas stove provided a bit of heat. I heard no complaints

about the crews struggling around the clock with the dangerous job of repair. Media coverage was mostly adult supervised. Megastorm madness isn’t an isolated case. A couple of weeks before that, a temporary construction bump on the Lion’s Gate Bridge deck caused panic and rage. Aggravated by a couple of accidents on the alternate route, and fed by hysterical media, drivers of West Van luxury cars were white-knuckled. Traffic choked the region that recently declined to pay a bit more for road improvements. In both cases, people outside Lotus Land were muttering: Welcome to our world. This is pertinent to the federal election. Are you competent to save for your retirement with RRSPs and a tax-free savings account, or do you need the government to do it for you, by force? Are you capable of managing your own child care, or should the nanny state create a hugely subsidized system, which has already failed in Quebec, from coast to coast? Are you ready for the day when the machine stops? Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Twitter: @ tomfletcherbc Email: tfletcher@blackpress. ca

A hacksaw, combined with teamwork and big hearts allowed this group to come together to save a fawn trapped in a wrought iron fence recently.

Neighbours work to save area fawn Submitted by Rocky Korchinski I was driving for coffee about noon with my daughter and we came upon the following event. There was a baby deer stuck in a metal fence gate. He/She had worked her way in so that she was caught between her ribs and shoulder

blades. She was struggling to get out but could not extract herself. I pulled my truck over and both my daughter and myself went over to see if we could help. We were trying to see if she could get out either forward or backward but could not do it as she was struggling too much.

The people in the house came out and we tried again by pulling the gate to see if we could get the opening a bit larger. That did not work. I asked the people if they were attached to gate at all, and the woman said very firmly “Not at all!” So I asked them if we could cut it. He went to get a hacksaw and with me holding down the front of the deer, the woman holding onto its rear legs, the man cut the fence post and it came apart.

I then said “When she moves, she will run, so watch out.” I let the deer go, the woman let go of the legs, and she popped up and ran back to her Mother, who had been watching us very anxiously the entire time. Mom and baby smelled each others noses, and then the bounded off. We all shook hands on a job well done and continued on with our days.

Thieves use bobcat to steal ATM machine Last week, an individual or individuals broke into the Bootleg Gap Golf Course office using a bobcat owned by the course. “They drove a bobcat through the front door at Bootleg Gap, loosened the ATM machine,

which was bolted to the floor and took off,” said Kimberley RCMP Cpl. Chris Newel. The bobcat, as well as the office at the golf course was damaged in the robbery and Newel said that on the previous day, someone had

tried to access a bobcat at the Trickle Creek Golf Course. There was an undisclosed amount of cash in the ATM machine and Newel said an investigation is ongoing. He asked that if anyone saw anything, or knows anything about the incident to contact local RCMP. No arrests have been made.

Slugs: Visiting from Kamloops and went to a Cranbrook store to purchase a memory card for my camera. I paid over $60 for it to find that my camera rejected it. I went right back to customer service and was rudely told that because the package had been opened, I could not return it for a refund or exchange. This encounter lasted for some time before a supervisor was called. I was questioned as to why I had not spoken to an associate prior to purchasing the card. I do know how to find an associate; however, associates in this store are very hard to locate. Eventually I received a refund with a lecture telling me how the store was out the cost of a card. REALLY!!!! My visit to Cranbrook is somewhat tainted. Hugs: Big hugs to the honest person who turned in my wallet at Wal Mart. All intact! It restores your faith to know there are honest people like that. Thank you so much. Hugs: To all the people who take care of the Provincial Park at Wasa Lake. The grounds are

always cleaned when someone leaves a site so when someone new arrives they look great and the bathrooms and shower house are cleaned regularly. We love camping here! These employees deserve recognition. Hugs: Big, big hugs to Brenda and her team at the Sears store in Cranbrook. Many years of good, friendly service. All the best on your retirement! We shall miss you all and the Sears store to. Hugs: Big hugs to Marie at the Kimberley Museum. Job well done. Very interesting place to go see, educational and a walk in the past. Slugs: To the City of Cranbrook electrical department (traffic lights) for not adjusting the traffic lights properly on Victoria Avenue. Simply tweek an additional 10+ seconds on the straight through green light after a red light stop. It would prevent drivers racing to get through the yellow before it turns red at the very next light. It happens every day, all day long. Traffic lights are supposed to prevent, not create, hazardous driving. Slugs: To the Department of Highways for not implementing a reduced night-time speed limit along Highway 3 along the city “agricultural fields”. How much animal carnage does it take to finally realize that the yellow picture of an animal does not work.

Motorists do not heed these signs. Animals are slaughtered and vehicles are totaled off. A night-time limit of 80 km hour combined with RCMP enforcement would make a huge reduction in animals killed every year. Also, Grizzly bears and their cubs would find another food source, further away from humans. Hugs: To the friendly, courteous and professional staff, especially Collette at Cranbrook Kia who helped me find a new car. Slugs to the salesman at another lot who couldn’t be bothered to get out of his chair. Hugs: To a landlord in Cranbrook that not only looks after their tenants but also helps look after their pets. Hugs: A big hug out to Mrs. Carol Johns for being the best Kindergarten teacher ever. She sets the bar very high for all other teachers. She is very caring, loving and goes over and above the duty of being a teacher. Hugs: Go out to all the citizens of Cranbrook who follow the rules while driving on Cranbrook roads. It is very difficult to drive safely when people are speeding up residential streets. Hugs: To the great staff at Safeway, always kind and courteous and very helpful. Keep up the good work! Slugs: To the people that can’t be bothered to throw their garbage in the garbage can. Especially the people

Hugs: To the many residents local and out of town that stopped to aid the accident that occurred on Sunday outside of Jaffray. Thank you for your care and your willingness to help out. Roadside witness. Slugs: Ok long weekend, I get it, you have extra garbage from your lake property… hmm use your better judgement and don’t cram the roadside garbage outlets…use the dump! Plus put the garbage in the bin… upset rural resident. Hugs: To the people I saw recently struggling to save a baby deer from a wrought iron fence. They were successful. Slugs: To all tailgaters. Highways are dangerous enough without having to worry about someone right on your butt. Slugs: A Big slug to the CO’s for not enforcing the road closure East off the highway at Bummer’s Flats. Open it up or enforce it.

ing concert before a sold out house at Studio 64 on Saturday night. And no wonder the audience was so enthusiastic. The musicality and sheer energy of the trio as they pumped out a sequence of rhythmic, South American flavoured original numbers by Palatchi, along with some Palatchi twists to familiar jazz covers, was exciting to say the least. It was also loud enough to be heard several parishes away. Ostensibly a jazz concert, the opener for a 4-concert Live at Studio 64 jazz and blues series presented by Kimberley Arts Council, this performance went far beyond jazz, or even Latin jazz, as it was billed. Palatchi grew up in Argentina, the land of the tango, and he brought that dramatic rhythm, along with samba, reggae, African, gypsy, and funk rhythms to this performance. Playing the grand piano and Nord Electro keyboard & synthesizer, sometimes simultaneously, his fingers at times whirred like a humming bird’s wings, at others pounded out the chords in a manner pretty unfamiliar to that elegant grand piano. The dynamic tempo of the piano and keyboard was more than reinforced by the electrifying drumming of Tony Ferraro, an old favourite at Studio 64 who has appeared here twice before backing other touring artists. Centre stage, Ferraro and his flying drumsticks could easily have stolen the show from a lesser artist than Palatchi. And grounding the rhythm on 5-string electric bass was another familiar musician, Doug Stephenson, also making a return appearance at Studio 64. These two seriously talented Kootenay musicians are accompanying Palatchi on the BC Interior part of his CD release tour, promoting his third album, Trivolution, released in Mexico City this June. The tour continues through the West Kootenay and Boundary regions during September before Palatchi takes off for see Trio page 10

Conservationists celebrate expanded Castle protection

Photo stephen legault

The Castle wilderness area. After a 40-yearlong struggle between advocacy groups and the government, the Alberta Government has announced that it will expand protection in the Castle wilderness area along the BC Alberta border. Just north of Waterton National Park, the protected area will conserve roughly 1020 km2 of one of the most biologically rich and diverse landscapes in the country. Along with providing critical habitat for grizzly bears, wolverine and west-slope cutthroat trout, the area also acts as a water tower for southern Alberta. This landmark and long-awaited decision

shows Alberta’s commitment to environmental leadership and further demonstrates the need for British Columbia to protect their own portion of this region, the Crown of the Continent. With a large swath of protected areas to the south in Montana, including Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness, and Alberta’s Waterton National Park and newly expanded protected area in the Castle to the east, conservationists are calling for British Columbia to commit to joining their neighbours in environmental leadership by permanently protecting the BC portion of

North America’s premier wildlife corridor. “We applaud the Alberta government for giving the Castle the protection it deserves,” said John Bergenske, Conservation Director for Wildsight. “We’d like to see the BC government follow their lead by stepping up their commitment to the environment and creating a national park in the southeast one third of the Flathead River Valley and a Wildlife Management Area in the adjoining habitat.” The Flathead River Valley, located in southeast British Columbia, has been called the “missing piece” of WatertonGlacier International Park, and is unmatched in North America for its variety and density of carnivore species, including grizzly bears. Wildsight, the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, Sierra Club BC and CPAWS BC are working to protect the Flathead permanently with a National Park in the southeastern one-third and a

HEY MOYIE!

We WANT your ideas

The RDEK is drafting a Management Plan for the Aldridge Community Park in Moyie. We are looking for input from the community and park users.

So, What’s a Management Plan?

Simply put, it is a plan that helps lay out goals and guidelines for the short and long term operation, development and protection of the Park.

Why is this important?

If you use the Park and care about its future, this is the time to share your thoughts. We want to know what you enjoy about the park, what uses you’d like to see, what recreational opportunities you think should be offered, and what improvements (if any) you’d like to see.

Do I Need to Attend a Bunch of Meetings? www.rdek.bc.ca 1-888-478-7335

No. You can tell us everything through an online survey (link is on www.rdek.bc.ca), by filling out a copy of the survey (available at the Moyie General Store) or by calling Michele Bates, Planner at the RDEK. It’s that easy!

Ontario and Quebec, there to continue the Canadian portion of a tour which started in Mexico and will extend to Argentina and Europe. Meanwhile, the Live at Studio 64 fall jazz & blues series continues with a master jazz combo, the Tyler Hornby B3 Trio on Saturday, September 26, followed by Calgary blues band, Alittle Voodoo, on October 17, and ‘lounge’ jazz pianist Alan Brecker and his

quartet on November 21. A 3-concert pass can be had for $60 if you are a member of the Kimberley Arts Council, $66 if not. Similarly, individual concert tickets can be had for $22 members, $24 non-members. I’d tell you the ticket price at the door but the chances are that there won’t be any tickets left to sell at the door as these concerts now regularly sell out in advance. So call 250427-4919 or email kimberleyarts@gmail. com to make sure you get yours.

Drive one for your community and you can help the EKFH On Saturday, September 19, community members will have the opportunity to test drive a new Ford vehicle and, at the same time; help raise funds for East Kootenay Foundation for Health’s areas of greatest need. The test drive will be set up in the parking lot of Denham Ford from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., where several brand new Fords, for licensed drivers ages 19+ will be available for a test drive. The Drive one 4 UR

Community program was developed as a fun, engaging way to help communities to raise money to support non-profit organizations. For every valid test-drive completed, Ford Motor Company will donate $20 to EKFH, up to $6,000! Since Denham Ford began holding Drive One 4 UR Community events in Cranbrook in 2010, they have been able to raise and donate a significant amount of funds to a wide range

of organizations. To date they have raised over $15,000, and have hosted over 5 community Drive One Events.....and the number keeps on growing! So, come down for a hot dog and drink and take a Ford for a quick test drive with an EKFH volunteer – no sales person involved. Anyone with a valid driver’s licence earns us $20. To keep the children entertained there will fun activities, such

and test-drive one of Denham’s vehicles. For every test-drive, Ford will donate $20 to help support EKFH’s areas of greatest need. The maximum that can be raised is $6000 and we want your help to aim for this target!” states Braydon Denham, dealer principal of Denham Ford. There are also many other ways to give to EKFH, and all gifts are important. Whether you choose to donate during your

lifetime, or plan a gift for after you have passed on, your donation will help support priority programs with EKFH. You may make your gift in support of general areas, or direct it towards an area that is of special interest or importance to yourself. Kathleen Simon presents Amanda Bott with the first place certificate for the 3rd Annual Tall Tales Contest. August 30th Cranbrook First Toastmasters hosted the third annual Tall Tales contest. In the blustery weather at the gazebo at the Grouse Mountain campground in Yahk, four contestants went head to head telling their tallest tales. Witches reigned supreme in Kathy’s tale of growing up in Nova Scotia. Garbage Goop stole the campers and the day in David’s story of how he saved the world from the garbage slime that is at the bottom of the garbage bag. Roberta’s ghost tried to change how parliament does its job until someone said there are no

such thing as ghosts. Amanda weaved a tale of intrigue about how she landed an airplane filled with air cadets when surprisingly both pilots passed out. Amanda’s story took the day and the first prize. C o n g r at u l at i o n s, Amanda Bott. The day was rounded out with a potluck lunch that boasted a savoury cold smoked chicken breast and the best fudge on the planet. You should have been there. Well, maybe next year. Start formulating your story now so you are ready for the 4th Annual Tall Tales contest hosted by Toastmasters in the area.

Kalvin Marsh with his medal haul at the Canadian Nationals. by Bradley Woods Since I last reported in June we’ve enjoyed club matches in July, August and September plus we had members represent our area and club at Canadian Nationals in Prince George as well as the Alberta Provincials both for Smallbore and Highpower! We look forward to a couple more matches this season; October 24 and November 14, which is our fun windup shoot! If you’re thinking about giving this game a try you should attend the October match. Please don’t be shy and don’t let your ego get in the way. We are genuinely pleased to make new friends and introduce you to our sport. We all began somewhere and we all have days when we wonder why we can’t hit the target! It’s a humbling game that has an uncanny way of making you want to come back and try again! Following will be the results from our cold and rainy September matches, followed by a summary of the Nationals and the Alberta Provincials. Saturday Sept 5 Small Bore Standard Rifle: • Match Winner – Jim Zimmerman • Master – Kalvin Marsh • AAA – Jason Marsh • AA – Jordan Marsh Small Bore Hunter Rifle:

• Match Winner – Kalvin Marsh • Master – Jim Zimmerman • AAA – Kaitlynn Johnson *There were more shooters in lower classes for both guns but not enough to “hold the class.” Under NRA rules they move up for the match. Shooters still score in their respective classes, trying to advance in class and obtain personal bests, which is the most satisfying part of the sport. This striving for personal improvement (as in all sport) helps us in many other aspects of our life! On Sunday, 9 shooters gathered for a High Power match: • 1st Kalvin Marsh • 2nd Jeramey Marsh • 3rd Rick Fraser (winning in a shootout with Bill Johnson) Canadian Nationals July 5 ~ 11, 2015, Prince George BC Eight members of BRSA made the trip to Prince George to compete in the National Championship of our game. They had a great time as always and the results for each were nothing short of excellent: • Kalvin Marsh: Top Canadian smallbore standard rifle and highpower hunter rifle; Top Junior smallbore standard rifle and both highpower rifles. • Jeramey Marsh: 3rd Master smallbore hunter rifle and 1st AA highpower standard

rifle • Rick Fraser: 1st AA highpower Hunter rifle and 2nd A highpower standard rifle • Trudy Phillips: Top Lady smallbore hunter rifle • Richard Carere: 2nd AA highpower standard rifle • Deni Marsh: 3rd A smallbore hunter rifle • Dave Sherret: 2nd A highpower hunter rifle Rocky Marsh: did not place but shot well, had fun and was a great chaperone?!? Alberta Smallbore Provincials August 20 – 22nd Seven of our members attended the smallbore provincials in Alberta and again represented us well: • Kalvin Marsh: 1st Master standard rifle and 1st AAA hunter rifle • Jeramey Marsh: 1st AAA standard rifle and 2nd Master hunter rifle • Deni Marsh: 2nd A hunter rifle • Justin Marsh: 1st B hunter rifle • Jason Marsh: 2nd AAA standard rifle Jordon Marsh and Bill Johnson also participated and although they didn’t medal they shot well and should be recognized for making the trip and supervising the others, never an easy task! Kalvin Marsh also attended the Alberta Highpower provincials and took 1st in AAA Continued next page

He was also recently recognized as top junior shooter in Alberta! Silhouette shooting is spectator friendly… when the target is hit it often results in a clang of metal and the target goes spinning and flying! Bring some binoculars and a set of hearing protection (really only needed for high power matches). If you enjoy shooting you’ll likely be attracted to the game. If you think you’d like to try shooting there are many of us who enjoy sharing our love for the sport. Just ask and we’ll let you try! Membership fees for the BRSA are $90.00 for the year (April 1 ~ March 31). Additional dependant family members may join for $15.00 each, which covers insurance costs. In addition to insurance (which includes liability protection for members if ever involved in a shooting accident) and ongoing club expenses, dues cover your participation in 4 club matches, scheduled throughout the season. Juniors compete for free. Membership for those 65 years and up is $35.00 but does not include any match fees. Memberships can be purchased from Jeramey Marsh 250 420-7302. Gregarious Gardener 10 neat things...fall or spring bulbs 1. No Time like the Present. The term “fall bulb” can be confusing to new gardeners, as it refers to the planting time, rather than the blooming time. Daffodils, hyacinths, tulips and other bulbs are known as the messengers of spring. The time to plant them, however, is now. Some people prefer the term spring blooming bulbs. 2. A Bulb by any Other Name. Besides true bulbs, such as tulips, allium, garlic and daffodils, there are other underground roots of bulbous plants. These include corms, tubers and rhizomes. Corms are similar to bulbs, but without layers. Gladiolas and spring crocuses grow from corms. A famous example for a tuber is the potato and dahlias and some begonias also grow from tubers. Iris, canna and lily-of-the-valley are examples of plants growing from rhizomes. 3. Compact Storage Houses. Whether it is bulbs, corms, tubers or rhizomes, the big advantage of these root types is that they can store all the nutrients the plant needs to grow in the coming season. This makes planting with bulbs easy, and bulbs come closer to guaranteeing success than any other type of garden plant. 4. Picking a Winner. Success with bulbs begins with choosing

high quality bulbs, and in general the larger the bulb, the larger the bloom. When you buy bulbs, they should be firm and free from deep blemishes, cuts or soft spots. Bulbs should be planted as soon as outdoor conditions are suitable. If planting is delayed, store the bulbs in a cool place such as a refrigerator. Do not store them in plastic bags since the bulbs need to breathe. 5. Planting in the Snow. Planting fall bulbs is best done as long as the soil is soft enough to dig a hole. You will find detailed instructions on how deep and how far apart to plant the bulbs on the package. Plant with the pointed side up that’s the stem. A bit of bone meal in the bottom of the hole will help develop strong roots, and a good drink after replacing the soil in the hole will help close any air pockets. 6. The Return of the Tulip. You may get tulips back for a year or two. For best results when you are encouraging tulips to return, do not remove their leaves until they have yellowed and withered and come away from the bulb with a light tug. 7. Not all Bulbs are Equal. After a winter of having to dig through the snow, tulips and crocus are like candy to hungry deer. There are, however, some spring-blooming bulbs that will likely have deer turning up their noses and away

from your yard. You cannot beat daffodils - they are somewhat poisonous and put off a smell that animals tend to find repulsive. Hyacinths, grape hyacinths, snowdrops and allium are other fall bulbs that deer seem to leave alone. 8. Crocus’ Fall Cousin. Crocus blooms are some of the first messengers of spring, but some of their relatives announce fall approaching instead. The true fall crocus as well as colchicum, a close relative to the iris, are both fabulous bulbs to grow. If you plant them now, they will bloom for you next fall. 9. Don’t Mind the Smell. Garlic is another bulb best planted in the fall. You separate the individual cloves from the bulb and plant them in the ground in clusters or neat rows about a foot apart. Garlic will be growing in the ground for about nine months. Amending the soil with compost before planting is a great way of supplying it with the nutrients it needs. 10. You Can’t Force It! Or Can You? Fall is a great time to prepare your favourite spring-bloomers for winter flowering indoors. Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocus are all great for “forcing”. The bulbs have to get a cold treatment in the fridge for several weeks, depending on variety, before they can be planted in pots for a show of colour in the dead of winter.

All-wheel-drive comes standard with the 1.6 and optional on the 2.0. The new system comes with an AWD lock control switch that lets you “hold” the torque For upsplit to 72 equally between the front and rear wheels, months* which is intended for maximum traction on rough terrain. In addition the AWD can direct torque to the On the Volkswagen Jetta, Passatextra and Tiguan - including TDI! outside rear wheel when the Tucson is turning, while at the same time applying light braking to the inside rear wheel. This “torque vectoring” makes for more stable cornering. For improved ride comfort and control, Hyundai has stiffened the front and rear suspension attachment points, improved the engine arrowvw.ca 1-877-868-0961 mounts and bushings and increased the amount of sound insulation. All Tucsons (base models cost $26,200, including destination charges) arrive with the usual power-operated features plus air conditioning and a rear-view camera. The Premium adds heated front and rear seats, exterior roof rails plus blindspot and cross-traffic detection. The Tucson Luxury gets dualzone climate control, navigation and a panoramic sunroof, while the turbo AWD Limited gets rear- park assist, leather seats and 19-inch wheels. The top-end $41,500 Ultimate further provides you with forward collision and lane-departure warnings plus autonomous emergency braking that automatically activates should a collision seem imminent. Elegant styling, upgraded content and larger proportions are givens when it comes to the evolution of any brand, but the new Tucson surprises us just as much as the previous version did when it arrived. 2016 Hyundai Tucson Over time, Hyundai has made great strides in producing competitive small and tall wagons, but the latest Tucson could be the automaker’s breakthrough model in this class. In a field dominated by the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4 and Chevrolet Equinox, buyers certainly aren’t lacking choice. With each successive effort, the Tucson has closed the gap with its pack peers to a point where it would be foolish not to include it on your tobe-considered list. For 2016, the argument in the Tucson’s favour gains more traction. Stylistically, the junior Hyundai has a shape that mimics the larger Santa Fe. In the process, the look and feel matures a bit while adding a new level of sophistication. In particular, the trapezoidal grille sets a classier tone for the vehicle that carries through to more clearly defined wheel openings and an equally appealing liftgate/ taillight design. Hyundai refers to the Tucson’s shape as a continuation of its “Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design theme,” but whatever you call it, it’s impressive. The Tucson gains 7.5 centimetres

in overall length while the front and rear wheels are set 2.5 centimetres farther apart. The Tucson is also 2.5 centimetres wider. The rear access portal is larger for easier loading and unloading cargo, while the interior volume with the split-folding rear seat in place has increased by an impressive 20 per cent. It still falls short of the leagueleading Honda CR-V, however. Where the Tucson doesn’t fall short is the redesigned interior. The rear seat now reclines 37 degrees (previously 28) and the dash and control panel is now cleaner and more business-like. The Tucson’s motivational capabilities depend on your chosen trim. Base, Premium and Luxury Tucsons use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that makes 164 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. It carries over from the 2015 model. A turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder that kicks out 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque is optional in the Premium, but standard with the Limited and Ultimate designations. This powerplant replaces the previously optional nonturbo 2.4-litre four-cylinder rated at

BANKRUPTCY? REPOSSESSION? BAD CREDIT? HIGH INTEREST?

182/177. A six-speed automatic transmission connects to the 2.0, while a segment-exclusive seven-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission is mated to the turbo 1.6. Along with a bit more power, the turbo’s best fuel consumption es-

timates are 9.9 l/100 km in the city and 8.4 on the highway, compared with 11.0/9.0 for the base 2.0 (both AWD ratings). Those numbers show that the pricier turbo/seven-speed automated manual transmission option might just be worth the extra expense in the long run.

Safety Tip:

The interior design of the previous Tucson was revolutionary for the brand, as was the exterior styling. This time, however, Hyundai has dialed back the flash and the sharp angles to produce a more mature product.

nerships, said Mary Polak, Minister of Environment. Thanks to the enhanced invasive mussel defence program, 26 watercraft requiring decontamination were identified and addressed, either by provincial inspection crews or through decontamination orders provided to vessel owners. Four boats required a 30-day quarantine period, in addition to the decontamination, to ensure B.C.’s waters remain protected from invasive mussels. These are the first decontamination and quarantine orders issued under the provincial controlled alien species regulation. “The Invasive Species Council of BC applauds the new partnerships across governments, business and communities in expanding the “Clean, Drain, Dry campaign and boat inspection program, initially launched by the Council in 2012. Further work is underway to grow key partnerships and inspection tools to protect B.C.’s important water resources, said Barry Gibbs, chair, Invasive Species Council of BC. These successes can be attributed to increased early detection and rapid response efforts made possible by $1.3 million in provincial and BC Hydro funding and $360,000 from the Columbia Basin Trust, in collaboration with the Columbia Power Corporation and FortisBC. Keeping B.C.’s waterways invasive mussel-free is a joint effort by neighbouring states and provinces, and the Canadian Border Services Agency.

Mussel inspection programs across the Pacific Northwest notify each other of watercraft traveling from mussel infested waters. British Columbia’s enhanced invasive mussel defence program, launched in May 2015, includes six mobile decontamination units, 12 trained auxiliary conservation officers who perform roadside watercraft inspections and decontaminations, as well as

With the $1,200 grant and an investment of $50 a month, savings could grow to $12,000 (based on a 3.5 per cent annual growth rate). Growth of funds will depend on the amount invested and actual returns. For more information visit your financial institution or go to www.canlearn.ca

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED HAS NEVER BEEN MORE ATTRACTIVE

In a landscape where SUVs have become eerily similar and dull, the new Subaru Forester XT is a standout. The new 250-hp turbocharged Boxer engine and refined Continuously Variable Transmission provide optimum efficiency without depriving you of usable torque and power. The always on Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive takes the guesswork out of road conditions, but also tackles off-road challenges like no other. And the interior design is a lesson in pure, uncluttered logic and luxury. Plus, there’s room for five and plenty of cargo space. Isn’t it about time you took a closer look?

Mountain Sheep - Mature Bighorn Ram • means any bighorn ram mountain sheep whose horn tip, when viewed squarely from the side extends upwards beyond the forehead-nose bridge. Mountain Sheep - Full Curl Thinhorn Ram • means any thinhorn ram mountain sheep that has attained the age of 8 years as evidenced by true horn annuli as determined by the regional manager or his designate, or whose horn tip, when viewed squarely from the side at right angles to the sagittal plane of the skull, extends dorsally beyond the nose bridge plane. Do not use yearly horn growth annuli to determine the age of a ram in the field, because “false” annuli may be present.

Hunting guide correction:

HUNTING UPDATE 2015

Honouring hunters, trappers and fishers

Canada is now honouring its hunting, trapping and fishing heritage

Before the advent of agriculture, human beings hunted and fished for their food. Even after agricultural practices had been established, hunting continued to occupy an important role in sourcing out food for survival and trade. Still today, hunting and fishing are important food sources for many people. Despite that reality, hunting and fishing are often denounced as cruel, unnecessary, and even as a sport for bloodthirsty and brutal people. The critics of these activities couldn’t be more ill-informed. While the behaviour of some hunters and fishermen does not follow established etiquette and common morality, and while poachers do exist, the majority of people who engage in hunting and fishing do so for good reasons. These people resp ect the rules surrounding the sport, including guidelines and laws governing the preservation of animal species. In fact, hunting and fishing helps to keep many wild animal populations under control. In addition, these activities offer an ideal opportunity for friends and members of the same family to get together and spend quality time doing something active. And it should not be for-

gotten that the vast majority of hunters and fishermen eat what they catch, without wasting anything. Beginning this September, anglers, trappers and hunters across Canada will celebrate the inaugural National Hunting, Trapping and Fishing Heritage Day. A private member’s bill by Northumberland-Quinte West MP Rick Norlock has recently received Royal Assent from the Senate. Bill C-501: An Act Respecting a National Hunting, Trapping and Fishing Heritage Day designates the third Saturday in September as a day to recognize the value of hunting, fishing, and trapping to millions of Canadians. While Canadians understand the importance hunting, fishing and trapping played in Canada’s early economy, many don’t realize that today the three activities contribute $14 billion to the national economy each year. “Hunters, anglers, and trappers are Canada’s first and most effective conservationists. MP Norlock’s bill provides a fitting recognition of this magnificent legacy,” said Robert Sopuck, MP and chair of the Conservative Hunting and Angling Caucus.

HUNTING UPDATE 2015

Preparation is the key for a moose hunt Many moose hunters return home empty handed, not because there wasn’t any game in their territory but because they forgot to take care of a few details. Such things might not seem so important, but, when put into practice, they can improve chances for success on hunting trips. Taking the time to scout the territory and make sure that all your equipment is in top working condition, can make all the difference in the world for your moose hunting expedition.

Scouting and preparing the territory

Going after a moose is a big endeavour. Make sure to do the basics needed for a successful hunt.

The best time to scout a new territory is during the actual hunting season or immediately afterwards. Biologists have confirmed that these are the ideal moments to find obvious signs of game in order to confirm their presence. Keep your eyes open for noticeable traces of moose, including lays, rubs, or food sources, but don’t disturb the moose if they are in your sector. To facilitate your scouting, use a good scent eliminator to eradicate all your human odors, even if you’re not

planning to hunt that day. Your scent is all over your body and clothing as well as your boots and equipment.

The day before the hunt

Many hunters are so excited the day before the hunt opens that they forget some important things. If you want to check out your game camera, don’t visit the site in a convoy of ATVs. Go discreetly during the legal hunting period to avoid spooking the moose. If you scare them during scouting, there’s little chance you’ll find them again in the area when you’re ready to hunt. Don’t forget to spray your game cameras with a scent eliminator every time you handle them. Remember that you can hunt moose in several structured territories, which guarantees phenomenal hunting success. Another thing to note is that your moose will produce a lot of meat. Having a game trailer is a good idea for getting your kill out of the bush.

HUNTING UPDATE 2015 In the pot stuff 3 tablespoons of butter 1 coarse chopped onion A dash more cayenne pepper Ready to cook 1. Preheat your oven to 450. 2. Grease a pan that is big enough to hold the moose in a single layer 3. Put moose in pan and put in scorching hot oven for about 10 minutes (15 if your oven is a Russian built gas model that swings from 350 to 450 whenever the heck it feels like it) 4. In the pot stuff into a big pot on a medium high heat and saute it all together until the onions are soft (careful with the heat or you will have black, rather disgusting, onion mash) 5. Throw more saucy stuff into the onion mix for about 2 minutes and turn this all down to a low simmer 6. Dump the marinade into the pot 7. The moose should be browned on the outside by now. Gently place it in the pot. Splashing simmering curry sauce does not feel nice on bare skin. 8. Leave it all to simmer as low as possible for a couple of hours. Serve with rice and a lager.

Under new management

• Eat in or take out • Grill open 11am-10pm, 7 days a week • Children welcome with parent or guardian until 8pm

Camps fill up fast, and many guides book their schedules full up well before the season starts. After all, there are lots of nature lovers out there, and you can’t just settle for the last available dates for some kinds of fish. By making your reservations a priority, you’ll have a better chance of getting the dates you want and being able to choose the right outfitter for you. Be sure to pick someone who meets all your needs and expectations. Not all outfitters offer the same services and activities, so it’s not a good idea to just choose one at random. Before making your reservations, you have to know exactly what you’re looking for. For example, some outfitters are ideal for family vacations, while others are better suited to outings with friends. To make the right choice, you need to determine the particular type of accommodation that suits you (cottage, hostel or camping) and what you want to do during your stay. If you have a few questions about hunting, fishing or how it works to hire a guide, talk to the experts at a sporting goods store. Or, go to some fairs and hunting shows to talk to outfitters and get some useful advice. You can even make your reservations there.

Retrieve your kill, no matter what

You were up at 4 o’clock in the morning. The morning seemed really long, no movement. Suddenly, a snapping sound catches your attention. Yes, it’s a buck! Your neurons shift into high gear. Safety off, boom, you shoot or release your arrow. Then, you lose sight of your prey; so now what do you do? Only very experienced hunters are able to contain the euphoria that follows a hit. However, if the animal is frightened by loud cheers, for example, it can run a few kilometres before it collapses. The first thing is to carefully note where the animal was standing when you fired.
