Riding across Canada for kids A parade of 32 cyclists were greeted by friends, family and supporters at Sears Langley Thursday morning (Sept. 10) for day one of the eighth annual Sears National Kids Cancer Ride. The riders are taking 17 days to bike across Canada from Vancouver to Halifax to raise funds for the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation, a national charity dedicated to fighting childhood cancer. They started Thursday by dipping their wheels in the Pacific Ocean, and will end the ride by dipping their wheels in the Atlantic Ocean. “They are all passionate about this,” said Aaron Budlong, operations manager at Sears Langley. All of the participants and organizers are either volunteers with the organization, work with sick children or have been touched by cancer personally, he added. “It’s very touching, it’s really emotional.” Sears Langley has pledged to raise $10,000 for the cause by October. So far, through staff fundraising events and more than 700 customer donations, they have $4,500. To donate, visit the Sears Langley store in Willowbrook Mall or go to www2.coasttocoastagainstcancer.org

Criminal caught by his own computer D AN F ERGUSO N Ti me s Re po r t e r

A repeat sex offender is back in jail because his computer alerted authorities when he went online to search for child pornography. When 53-year-old Langley resident Robert Deeley bought a laptop from a second-hand store, he didn’t know the computer was stolen, or that the previous owner had equipped it with anti-theft software that would alert a security service the moment it went online. The tracking software would automatically trace the location of the laptop and record how it was being used by capturing screen shots and keystrokes. When Deeley connected his new computer to the internet in December, 2013, the computer alerted the security service,

located in Delta. When people at the service realized Deeley was using the laptop to access and view child pornography, they contacted the Delta police department, which obtained a search warrant and raided Deeley’s home in January, 2014. They found 30 images of child pornography on the computer. Deeley, who pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography, was sentenced to two years less a day in prison, followed by three years of probation with a curfew and several conditions including a ban against contact with any one under the age of 16. Details of the case were disclosed during a Surrey Provincial Court sentencing hearing in May of this year. A transcript of the oral decision, delivered in open court, shows a Forensic Psy-

Grizzly comes out of shadow after storm KU RT L AN G M A N N Bl ack Pre s s

“Shadow” the grizzly bear returned to her enclosure at the Greater Vancouver Zoo in Aldergrove on Sept. 5. She had been temporarily relocated to a safe enclosure after the windstorm caused severe damage to her larger space and a tree had knocked down her fence. Shadow was brought to the zoo as an orphaned cub by conservation officers years ago. Zoo officials said she had not been a danger to anyone while her fence was down and instead had been frightened by the crashing trees and had tried to hide. “We have done an extensive amount of work in her enclosure, cleaning up shrubbery and such, so she should be extremely excited and it will be like coming out to a new home for her,” said zoo general manager Jody Henderson. Special food treats were laid out by zoo staff in her enclosure for her to enjoy, and portions of the fallen trees were also left for her to climb on.

The 42-year-old Langley man arrested for assaulting a 70-yearold Surrey woman in her home has now been charged. Stephen Thomas Morse faces trial on multiple counts including aggravated sexual assault, forcible confinement, break and enter, robbery, disguise with intent and use of an imitation firearm. He was scheduled to make a brief appearance in Surrey Provincial Court on Thursday morning, after The Times press deadline. The woman was attacked last month in her South Surrey home

when she returned after being out for the morning. Surrey RCMP said an armed man entered the home shortly after noon, “restrained” the woman and demanded cash and other items. When the woman was unable to meet his demands, the intruder physically and sexually assaulted her, causing what were described as “significant” but “non-life-threatening” injuries before he left with a few items. The woman freed herself and called police from a neighbour’s residence. She was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police released video surveillance of a long-haired suspect in a baseball cap and sunglasses caught on video while entering the Royal Bank branch on 40 Avenue near 200 Street in Brookswood shortly after the attack. At the time, police said the hair might have been a wig. RCMP said Morse became a person of interest in the investigation during the first week of September.

“As soon as he was identified, the Surrey RCMP maintained constant surveillance while detectives continued their investigation to gather evidence to support charges” a written RCMP statement said. Morse was arrested Friday, Sept. 4. Police said the investigation of

Morse was continuing. The Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit has released a photo of Morse and said police would like to speak with anyone “who may have seen the suspect or known his whereabouts prior to and after the incident on Aug. 12, and up to his arrest on Sept. 4.” Morse was “not previously known” to police, the RCMP said. Cancer society cuts free rides

The Canadian Cancer Society will stop operating its Volunteer Driver Program that for years has given patients free rides to and from chemotherapy and radiation treatment in many B.C. communities. The society says declines in donations and volunteers have forced the end of the service, which cost $400,000 a year. “Unfortunately we’ve had to make the really difficult decision to close the program effective Oct. 6,” said Sandra Krueckl, vice-president of cancer control for the Canadian Cancer Society’s B.C. and Yukon division. “Donor dollars have been shrinking in recent years,” she said, adding the cancer society has felt the same stresses as many other charities, including a slide in how many hours volunteers are now willing to commit out of their increasingly busy lives. “As our current volunteers are retiring out of their current volunteer roles, we are not seeing the same number of volunteers coming up behind them.” About 80 clients per month used the program, which was staffed by roughly 380 volunteers around B.C. Drivers used their own vehicles and were reimbursed 41 cents per kilometre for gas and wear-and-tear.

Su bmitte d pho to

The Canadian Cancer Society is ending its Volunteer Driver Program that provides free rides to cancer patients. Other transportation alternatives exist in most communities, Krueckl said, adding demand for rides had been declining. She stressed that the Freemasons Cancer Car Program, a separate ride service that the cancer society is a partner in, is unaffected and will continue to operate. The society asked the province, which already contributes to the operations of its cancer lodges, to provide more funding to support the ride program, but was declined. “While they certainly were

sympathetic to our situation and understood our declining revenue situation and challenges with supporting this program in the future, they have competing priorities,” Krueckl said. The loss of the cancer society program will be felt mainly in some parts of Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island, she added. The cancer society is advising clients on what other ride services may be available in each area. They can call 1-888-9393333.

In 2007, Langley police put out a public warning about Deeley From 1

and theft. He was sentenced to five years. In 2005, Deeley was convicted of possession of child pornography and sentenced to two years in jail and three years of probation. When he finished serving that sentence in 2007, Langley RCMP issued a public warning that Deeley was planning to live in the Willowbrook area and that he was a designated dangerous offender who was considered “a risk to re-offend against all females, including sexual as-

sault.” The police published his photo and advised residents to report Deeley if he was seen violating his many probation restrictions. At the May sentencing, Surrey Provincial Court Judge James Sutherland noted that Deeley has sought treatment for his addiction to underage pornography, “and he has taken steps to curtail it pharmaceutically, as well.” Judge Sutherland said the sentence of two years less a day, as recommended by both

the defence and prosecution, would allow Deeley to continue treatment in a provincial prison to help him “to control his behavior when he is inevitably released from jail back into the community.” A sentence of more than two years would land the convicted offender in federal prison, where he would be unable to continue his current course of treatment and which would “eliminate the possibility of probation and eliminate the eternal controls that Mr. Deeley needs,” the judge said.

There will be a significant police presence at the Langley Good Times Cruise-In on Sept. 12, Langley RCMP have advised. The Cruise-In is a family-oriented event and one of the biggest of its kind in North America, drawing more than 100,000 people to downtown Langley. Consequently, Langley RCMP has collaborated with its community partners to provide a police presence to ensure the integrity of the event is maintained, said Cpl. Holly Marks. During the past several years, there have been no issues of concern associated with the event. A number of years ago po-

lice dealt with drivers stunting and doing doughnuts the evening before but otherwise, the Cruise-In has been a safe and problem-free event. However, police believe their presence acts as a deterrent. RCMP warn that consuming alcohol in public and intoxication will not be tolerated. Police will also be on the lookout for stunting, drifting, burnouts, doughnuts and racing, she said. Drivers in violation of these offences not only will receive a ticket, their vehicle will be impounded for seven days. In order to reclaim their vehicle, drivers will be required to pay for any associated towing and storage charges. Officers will remain vigilant in

their pursuit of impaired drivers as well. Officers will be checking vehicles to ensure drivers and vehicles are properly licensed, all occupants are buckled up, and the vehicles themselves have no defects. “This is one of the largest events of this type on the continent and provides a tremendous opportunity to showcase the City of Langley,” said Marks. Downtown Langley will be closed to traffic for the show on that day and parking in the area will be a challenge, police advise. Free parking is being offered at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, with shuttle bus service to Cascades Casino.

Pharmacy robberies lead to arrest MONIQUE TAMMINGA Tim es Reporter

Charges have been laid against a Langley man accused of robbing a Langley City pharmacy twice in July. Langley RCMP allege that on July 9, a man entered the IDA Pharmacy carrying a ‘baton’ type weapon and bear spray. He jumped over the counter,

charged toward staff members and fled several moments later, with several bottles of prescription medication. It’s further alleged, the same man returned to the pharmacy on July 27, this time concealing his face. Unfortunately for him, when he entered the store, he was unable to extend the collapsible baton and fled prior to

any contact with staff, said police. Scott Daniel Johnson, 24, of Langley, has been charged with robbery and disguising his face with intent to commit an offence. He has been released from custody with a number of conditions. His next court appearance is Sept. 11.

The Aug. 29 windstorm that rocked the Lower Mainland caused widespread damage because it happened earlier than normal at the end of an extended drought, said Langley Township acting director of parks recreation and culture Al Neufeld. “The primary reason for failure is that all the deciduous trees are currently in full leaf, so they act as large wind sails,” Neufeld said in a Sept. 1 email to a resident. Normally, he said, windstorms occur in the fall and winter when “the leaves have already fallen off and the wind simply passes through the tree.” “This type of storm is not typical for this time of year,” Neufeld said. The drought conditions also made the branches “a little more brittle than they would normally be.” A resident had written the Township to express concern about the state of some tall trees in their neighbourhood following the storm and suggested the trees’ height should be reduced for safety reasons. In his reply, Neufeld said “topping” trees to reduce their height would actually increase the risk because “the resulting new growth (on a toppedoff tree) is weakly attached to the tree and provides multiple points where trees will snap off in the future as well as opening up unnecessary wounds where disease and/or insects can affect the future health of the tree.”

It would be interesting to track but we’d hedge a bet that there are more volunteers per capita in Langley than in any other municipality. And with that kind of care for the community, results in amazing events like all the ones happening this weekend. The 18th annual Langley Cruise-In is one of the largest car shows on the continent, drawing up to 100,000 people and hundreds of sweet rides from all over B.C., Washington and Alberta to downtown Langley. From the sweet purr of a big engine, to the shiny paint job on a cool hot rod to the sounds of local musicians belting out rock n’ roll — the Cruise-In is an event not to be missed on Saturday. A fact that is understated each year is the Cruise-In is run by a volunteer board who put in blood, sweat and tears to make the event run well. They do it for the love of cars and their community. But also, the Langley CruiseIn is Western Canada’s best attended charity event. More than $60,000 was raised from the Cruise-In last year, with 100 per cent of those dollars going to Langley-specific charities. That impressive tidbit should make Langleyites even more proud to host this event. Then on Sunday, put your stretchy pants on and go hungry to the 10th annual BBQ Off the Bypass. Samplings of fall off the bone ribs, melt in your mouth brisquet and more at this free food event put on by volunteers. They do this for the same reason the Cruise-In organizers do — for the love of it. This year, donations are being accepted to help TinyKittens, a foster program based out of Langley that takes in feral and abandoned pregnant cats. The fun doesn’t end there. On Saturday, Township firefighters’ charity is hosting a family fun day at Krause Berry Farms serving up their famous waffles with proceeds going to help kids. Fort Langley is hosting its first ever Food Truck Festival that day too. Again, organizers of these two events are volunteers with a love for Langley. We are lucky to have so much to do — so take advantage of the sunshine and support all these volunteers’ efforts.

Question

of the week

Will you vote differently in the upcoming federal election than you did in 2011?

Answer online at www.langleytimes.com

For the kids’ sake they

In B.C., 78 children aged five to 18 are injured in crashes in school or playground zones every year. With children heading back to school this week, Sooke Mounties are asking drivers to watch for children, especially in or around school zones and expect more traffic on our roads. Parents are encouraged to review the rules of the road with their children and go over their daily route to and from school. The start of the school year is also a great time for parents to consider carpooling with another parent in their neighborhood for school drop off and pick up or allowing their child to walk or cycle to school if possible to help reduce traffic congestion and vehicle carbon emissions. With driving, there is always a temptation to speed just a little and pass those who seem like they are driving too slow. Now is the time to put the brakes on bad driving habits. The kids will be back in school and they may not be paying as much attention as they should to vehicles. If you are caught speeding in a school or playground zone you can reach into your wallet to pay a fine of $196 to $483 plus three driver penalty points. The posted speed in school zones is 30 km/h between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on school days. And another reminder: pay attention when you are driving. Distracted driving is more than being on a cellphone, it can be eating, fetching something or just looking away. Pay attention to those in front of you and back of you and drive defensively. Slow down. We all need to do our part to keep children and students safe. That means expecting busier roads and giving yourself plenty of travel time so you aren’t rushing and can stay focused on the road. — Black Press

KPU wakes up and smells the pot for all its worth CANNABIS COURSE IS A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION OF LEGALIZATION, SAYS WALLY MARTIN Editor: Re: Pot 101: KPU offers course in cultivation (The Times, Aug. 20). Incredible — this is a phenomenon that needed to happen and will boost the status of KPU beyond belief. Finally Canadians are waking up as cannabis goes mainstream. Ever since some American states legal-

ized recreational use everyone has been asking why is Canada lagging so far behind. This university course will begin the catch-up that is desperately needed in Canada. Congratulations to KPU. What needs to happen is the reversal of 80 years of silliness,

where cannabis was made illegal. The hardship that has been caused to countless millions of persons over that time period needs to end now. In the words of Donald Trump, “our leaders are really stupid.” WALLY MARTIN,

Letter writer Bernard Major said not many, if any people, will brave bitter cold to swim in the outdoor pool during fall and winter months. There is so much more use if the pool was indoors.

Kindness during storm Outdoor pool works for Polar Editor: This letter is a BIG thank you to the gentleman who was at Bonetti’s Meats in Aldergrove on the Saturday of the big wind storm. My spouse and I drove for an hour to reach the store because of the road closures only to find the power out and they were not able to accept any kind of payment, except cash. The gentleman who was there paying for his purchases, also paid for ours as well which caught us by surprise.

Bear Swim, not for rest of us

The warmth of your hospitality and your generousness was truly awesome to experience. After we left the store, we drove for another hour to find a working ATM to withdraw the funds, then drove all the way back to Bonetti’s Meats and gave the cash to the owner. We appreciate your act of kindness. Thank you very much, kind sir. SANDRA STEFFAN AND

Editor: The sod has just been turned to mark the start on the construction of the new Aldergrove Recreation Center proclaimed to be a 12 month of the year facility for all ages to enjoy. Sounds great, but have a look at the plans on their website. You would think that the planning department for the Township of Langley would have been capable of designing an indoor swimming pool that actually has a roof over it within their budget. Seemingly that’s not the case. The proposed Aldergrove Recreation Centre will have an outdoor swimming pool which will only be used when the weather is nice. On average about four months each year. I suppose an Aldergrove Polar Bear Swim on New Year’s morning would appeal to the more hardy among us, but for us lesser mortals who love to enjoy the benefits and pleasure of a swimming pool all year round without freezing to death have literally been left out in the cold. We are told there is not enough money in the budget for a roof. It’s a bit late in the day to tell us that. Nobody mentioned that when the plans were first announced for a new facility with a “state of the art indoor pool” about four years ago. An outdoor swimming pool in Aldergrove! Why waste our money? I notice that the well connected hockey frater-

We must help refugees Editor: I must be honest, I’m ignorant to the nuances of international politics. When a friend asked what the Syrian refugee crisis was about, I offered a feeble explanation about an Arab Spring and Isis. It didn’t make much sense I’m sure, but she accepted it. I don’t know what to do about the crisis but I do know that something must be done. I know when a young child is

found face down in the surf because he has drowned in a desperate attempt to find safety, my heart — and the heart of every parent — contracts in anguish. We live in a civilized and educated society, yet we sit by watching the horrors of history being repeated. I’m not sure how I can help, how we can help. But, somehow, we must help. KATIE QUINN, LANGLEY

nity have been well looked after by the planning department. They have a nice new ice rink (with a roof), with 550 retractable seats, offices and lots more. I suppose since ice hockey is the national religion its not so surprising. I still feel it is totally unfair. Mind you the spin off heat from the ice rink will used to heat the pool. Try not to think about getting from the changing rooms to the pool, and back again, in mid January, wearing only a swim suit and bare feet. Which brings me to my point. The federal election campaign is now in full swing with all the promises being handed out by all the parties in exchange for our votes. Money, no problem, trust us they say. So how about a roof for our pool? A sure fire winner. It would appeal to the keen swimmers of all stripes and ages, Mums and Dads who take their kids to splash around and slide down the slide. Don’t forget the aged and infirmed who can actually exercise in the pool and enjoy it. Swimming classes for the schools, the list goes on. I bet that would amount to a whole lot of votes. It would certainly get mine. I am surprised our mayor and Township council have not thought of this. Or have they? BERNARD MAJOR, LANGLEY

Mike Hunniford wants more help for people with gambling addictions, so he has begun holding Gamblers Anonymous meetings combined with Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

Help for problem gamblers D AN FERGU SO N Ti m e s Re po r t e r

When he got into recovery, Mike Hunniford was warned that addiction is “cunning and baffling” and sometimes an addict will get better only to replace one compulsion with another. He found out just how true it was, when, several years after getting off booze and staying sober, Hunniford developed a gambling problem. “It creeped in,” Hunniford says. “It wiped me out.” The Langley resident got the help he needed and stopped. Now, he’d like to help other people with the same problem. Hunniford has begun holding Wednesday night 12-step meetings for people like him, who are battling gambling and other addictions. They are held 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Evergreen Timbers Hall at 5464 203 Street, in a space donated by the Lions club. “I’m paying forward my sobriety,” Hunniford says. “I’m not here to make money. This is service work.” He can be reached at 778-707-0026. Hunniford was profiled in the Oct 29, 2013 “Our Langley, Our People” supplement where the former antique store owner described how he ended up homeless and how he was rescued by a former addict who spotted him lying in some bushes near a Fraser Highway coffee shop. After recovering, Hunniford had both hands and one side of his face tattooed with crosses. He says they are there to remind him of the higher power that now guides his life, so that he will be reminded every time he looks in the mirror and he will see the cross if he ever reaches for a drink again.

Langley stroke survivor aims to help others D AN FERGU SO N Ti m e s Re po r t e r

On Sept. 1, Steve Taylor of Langley marked one year stroke-free. Steve and his wife Wendy are planning to celebrate by taking the cruise they were forced to cancel when he suffered the first of what he describes as his “twoand-a-half strokes.” About two years ago, Steve was talking business with someone he’d just met when the first stroke hit. Suddenly his words turned into gibberish. “Are you all right?,” the other man asked. Taylor managed to briefly regain coherent speech. “That was kind of weird,” Steve said. Then language deserted him again. It would take months of intensive therapy to get it back, a process he calls “fascinating.” When a doctor asked him to name a body part, he knew what to point at, but couldn’t summon the words. “I couldn’t say my nose, I

couldn’t say dog, I couldn’t say anything.” He calls his second stroke the “half-stroke” because it was a “little one” that only affected his vision. “My eyes started going wonky,” he recalled. He told Wendy that he should probably go to the eye doctor because “things were starting to go dark.” She took him to the ER instead. He ended up giving up his drivers’ licence because of visual impairment, but his eyesight has improved and he’s hoping he can pass the necessary tests next year. The third stroke, not long after the second, undid most of the intense effort he’d put into getting his language skills back, forcing the stubborn Steve to repeat his Steve and Wendy Taylor share a laugh. therapy. “He’s so tenacious,” Wendy paring to volunteer with the Heart and program that starts in October. says. “It’s one of the best things has little trouble getting his point about him.” A year after his last stroke, Steve across. Professional Firefighters Association Burn Fund, Canadian Cancer Society and Muscular Dystrophy Canada. “This is our main keystone event to raise funds for our charitable partners,” said Burwell. The aim of the Township of Langley Firefighters’ Charitable Society is to benefit citizens.

Part-time job turns into full-time career GARY AHUJA Times Reporter

Working at McDonald’s was supposed to be a temporary gig, just something to tide Melissa Knight over until she found her path in life. She was 17 years old and had never worked before, with most of her spare time occupied by the theatre program at her high school. But Knight’s uncle Willy Quan had just opened a new McDonald’s location in Coquitlam — one of his many stores — and needed some extra hands. So Knight signed up and began by working the front counter at the McDonald’s in Coquitlam Centre. “But after my first day, I fell in love with it, I was hooked,” Knight said. “It is all about the people — which I loved — and how we were focused on making people happier. “(And) I just loved the fast pace.” Fifteen years later, Knight is still going strong and last

“We were trained to make people’s days better and to me, that was such an interesting concept and that was exactly what I liked in life,” she said about what has kept her going. And she has worked her way up to the manager position. Working for a parent can be a challenge in some situations but Knight loves the relationship they have. “I think we are probably more honest with each other than the average manager and owner, but I think that ends up being a positive thing,” she said. Working in the restaurant business is a family affair for the Knights. One of her brothers, Brad, is the manager at the new Gateway location while her sister Jessica Kegler is the first assistant manager. Another brother, James, works part-time. As for her long-term plans, Knight isn’t sure where she will end up.

week (Sept. 2), the 32-yearold received a 2015 Outstanding Manager of the Year Award from McDonald’s Canada. Knight said she was honoured and excited to earn the award. “I’ve seen so many managers that I admire win this award during my time with McDonald’s, so to be put in the same category as them is very humbling,” she said. “I love this company … so to be recognized as someone who represents what they stand for is really an honour.” After getting her start at her uncle’s franchise, Knight came to the Walnut Grove location in 2001 after her father Ron bought the Pioneer Plaza store.

Melissa Knight (left) was named a recipient of the Outstanding Manager of the Year award by McDonald’s Canada. Knight is the manager of the Walnut Grove location and has worked for McDonald’s for 15 years. Part of her would love to own her own franchise one day, but she also wouldn’t mind working in the McDonald’s Canada head of-

fice, training others. “My passion has always been people. I like the positions where I can work with people,” she explained.

“Melissa has an enthusiasm for her people, guests and McDonald’s as a whole that is truly infectious,” Ron Knight said.

Casino helps food bank SOURCES FOOD BANK GE TS $2,500 FROM GATEWAYGIVES Food bank users won’t have to worry about receiving a nutrient-packed, protein-rich selection at the Sources Langley Food Bank in the near future thanks to a donation from Cascades Casino through its corporate giving program GatewayGIVES. Sources Director of Community Services Denise Darrell, Food Bank Manager Jaye Murray and Langley Food Bank Operations Coordinator Bruce Strom were on hand at the food bank on August 27 to receive a $2,500 cheque from Cascades Casino General Manager Raymond MacNeil and Assistant General Manager Robert Case. “We’ve only been in operation for ten months but we’re seeing incredible support from the Langley community,” Strom said.

“We already serve 100 people in an hour and we distribute for five hours once a week. “We expect to serve double the number of clients we are serving now by the end of the year.” “We anticipate a huge demand for proteins and healthy snacks for school lunches as children head back to school, and the Langley Food Bank is struggling to provide this,” Darrell added. “Eating enough protein is essential to good health and a challenge for the most vulnerable in our community. “This generous donation from GatewayGIVES is incredibly timely and we are thankful to them for supporting our food bank and the work we do in the community.” Protein-rich foods such as

meats, fish and beans are on the more expensive end of groceries and are less frequently donated. They also run out the quickest on distribution day. After this week, there isn’t enough to hand out to the 450 clients expected next week. Cascades Casino’s contribution will allow Sources Langley Food Bank to sustain their supply of canned protein products in the colder, tougher months, and allow them to continue providing healthy, nutritious meals to vulnerable people in the Langley community. “GatewayGIVES is our way to give back and support the communities where we operate,” said Tanya Gabara, director of public relations at Gateway Casinos & Entertainment. “We’re extremely proud to partner with like-minded organizations such as Sources that strive to make a positive difference in the lives of those around them.”

Three accountants pass UFE exam Three Langley chartered accountant students have passed the three-day Uniform Evaluation (UFE) exam. Shinjong Kang, Tricia Koo and Steven

Ziegler completed the exam, which was administered by the legacy Chartered Accountants School of Business in June. A total of 125 B.C. and Yukon applicants

successfully completed the exam. In order to become designated, students must complete rigorous course work, pass the UFE, and work for 30 months in an ap-

proved training office. The national UFE ensures all Canadian chartered accountants meet the same standards, which are recognized nationally and internationally.

‘R’ word doesn’t apply to B.C. says economist JEFF NAGEL Black Press

A small contraction of Canada’s economy in the first half of the year put the country in a technical recession, which may already be over if an uptick in June wasn’t a blip. But a leading B.C. economist doesn’t believe the ‘R’ word applies to B.C., or to most of the country for that matter. “I don’t believe Canada is in an official recession,” said Helmut Pastrick, chief economist for Central 1 Credit Union. “This situation is not really indicative of what most economists would consider a fullfledged recession.” He said the downturn is a narrow one focused mainly on the energy sector, hitting Alberta hard as producers slash capital spending following the plunge in oil prices. Statistics Canada reported a 0.5 per cent drop in GDP in

the second quarter, following a 0.8 per cent decline in the first quarter. But a monthly breakdown pointed to economic growth of 0.5 per cent in June. “That offers some glimmer of hope that what we’ve seen in the prior five months of negative GDP contraction could be at an end.” B.C. and central Canada are not likely in recession, Pastrick stressed. There may be weak regions of B.C., he said, such as the energy-exposed northeast or mining-dependent communities hit after metallurgical coal firms cut production. But Pastrick sees continued slow growth in southern B.C., including the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan. “Our forecast for the B.C. economy is that we will see growth this year and we cur-

rently do not see it in a recession.” He said employment data backs that up, indicating job growth across B.C. running at about 0.7 per cent so far this year. As for whether the term recession should apply to the country as a whole, Pastrick said he leaves that to a panel of economists at the C.D. Howe Institute, who assess various factors, including the depth of the downturn, its duration and breadth across multiple industries, and not strictly the rule of thumb regarding two quarters of shrinkage. The expected confirmation of a recession and what to do about it has been an issue in the federal election campaign, with the Liberals pledging aggressive stimulus spending and deficits, in contrast to Conservative and NDP promises to balance the budget.

Hard work paying off for Polancic GARY AH U J A Ti m e s Spo r t s

As a pitcher, Jake Polancic is used to having the game in his hands. So it is only fitting that when it comes to his baseball future, the 17-year-old again took control. “When I was younger, I was a decent baseball player, but I always wanted to be better,” he admitted. “I was always left off (Selects) teams and as I got older, I didn’t want to look back and say ‘what if I was a little skinnier, what if I was a little stronger, would I have made that team?’ “I didn’t want to think about it, I didn’t want to be told that I am not good enough to do something.” So three years ago, Polancic dedicated himself to working with a personal trainer, running every morning before school and vigorously hitting the gym. He also changed his diet. He went from being six-foot and 240 pounds at the start of Grade 10 to now: six-foot-three and 205 pounds. Even still, Polancic wasn’t a lock to make it even on the Langley Junior Blaze Premier team. Blaze coach Jamie Bodaly admits that he thought Polancic had no chance of making the Langley program, one of the top programs in Canada. “I lobbied for him to make the Junior Blaze in Grade 10,” Bodaly said. “He would have been an easy kid to cut because no one knew about him.” Bodaly had worked with Polancic at the Yale Baseball Acade-

Seven off to elite Toronto tourney

my as the Walnut Grove teen was commuting every day to attend the Abbotsford school. “Honestly, I didn’t think I would make it myself when I tried out,” Polancic admitted. In his Grade 10 year with the Junior (U16) Blaze, Polancic — a right-handed pitcher — took advantage of his opportunity to post an 11-2 record in 14 games. He was third in the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League with 61 strikeouts and sixth with a 1.67 earned run average. “He threw high 70s (miles per hour), which isn’t great by any means, but he just pitched,” Bodaly said. Even still, there was no guarantee Polancic would make the Premier (U18) Blaze team this past season. He made the team and finished a respectable 3-3 in nine starts, with an ERA of 2.77 and 49 strikeouts in 48 innings. He also gained some velocity on his fastball, topping out at 87 miles per hour. Others are beginning to take notice. Last month, Polancic made the B.C. team for the Canada Cup, helping them win gold. And the latest feather in his cap is being selected to the prestigious Tournament 12, an invitation-only event at Toronto’s Rogers Centre for the top high school aged players from across Canada. It runs this weekend. Polancic is one of seven players from the Blaze program — and one of four from Langley — selected to participate (see bottom story).

The Langley Blaze will be well represented next week. Seven members of the Premier Baseball League program have been selected for the elite Tournament 12 showcase baseball tournament, which runs Sept. 14 to 18 at Toronto’s Rogers Centre.

“If you had asked me last year, I never thought I would have made it,” Polancic said. “Gaining the velocity really helped. If I hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t have made (Tournament 12), Canada Cup, I probably wouldn’t be playing for the Blaze right now.” “Not a chance (did I see this coming),” Bodaly said. “But all credit to Jake, through hard work he has turned himself into something. “He just keeps his mouth shut and doesn’t complain; he just goes about his business. “Jake is an incredibly hard worker; I can’t say that enough.” For his part, Polancic has no problem putting in the extra hours of training. “I see people I know getting all these invites and college offers. I want to be there too,” he said about his motivation. “I didn’t want to be left out of getting to go to college to play baseball at a high level. I changed my everyday routine, I changed my diet, I pretty much changed everything. “It is tiring, but for how much I have progressed in a year, it is totally worth it.” Polancic, who is in Grade 12, has one year left at the Premier level and he is eying a college scholarship as heads into his Major League Baseball draft year. Bodaly said that with a bit more velocity on his fastball, Polancic has the potential to hear his name called in June’s Major League Baseball amateur draft. If not, he

Nathan Godard (30 yards), Brodie Thomas (20 yards) and Rodenstein (20 yards) led the Mustangs ground game. The kicking game was also efficient, with Nickel averaging 35 yards on his five punts while Fletcher averaged 40 yards on three kickoffs. ••• A big victory last month has vaulted Langley’s Shawn Murphy ranked fourth in the world. The 51-year-old took top spot at Oregon’s world sixgun championships last month to move from sixth to fourth in the World Fast Draw Association rankings. Murphy is a member of the Thunderbird Fast Draw Club which runs out of the Langley Rod and Gun Club. And another Thunderbird member, Aldergrove’s Peggy Franks, won the women’s thumbing division contest in Oregon. Thumbing is a new division where competitors can only use one hand to draw, aim and fire the revolver, which must be cocked using the shooter’s thumb. Two other club members, Paula Murphy and Garry Porteous, also earned some hardware. Taylor block helps Bears tie Falcons

In a back-and-forth game, the North Langley Bears and Abbotsford Falcons battled to a 16-16 tie in bantam football on Saturday. The teams traded the lead six times before the final whistle. Evan Rees and Nick Lacroix scored a touchdown each before Bears kicker David Wegert hit a field goal to give his team a 16-15 lead. The Falcons lined up for a late 21yard field goal which would have given them the lead, but Ryan Taylor partially blocked the attempt and Abbotsford had to settle for the single point. Connor Hurley led the defence with an interception and a fumble recovery while K’Paw Shee Htoo also had an interception. Offensively, Rees and Pablo Wigwigan each ran for 114 yards to lead the Bears ground game. ••• The North Langley atom Bears opened the football season with a bang. The atom football team delivered a dominant defensive performance in a 39-0 shutout victory over the Mission 9ers. The defensive line did not allow any yards after the first quarter and Jesse Davison, Reece Fennell and Lucas Re-

imer all had big tackles. Ben Evans scored the team’s first two touchdowns, the first on a 33-yard quarterback scramble and the second on a pick-six interception score. Evans also threw a touchdown pass to Damon Bernemann. The Bears also got rushing touchdowns from Bernemann, Evan Hoy and Aiden McMurtry. Hoy and Lucas Laroche added convert attempts. ••• The North Langley Bears flag football team opened up the season with a pair of victories over the Mission 9ers. Tyler Campbell and Charlie Reimer both scored multiple touchdowns while Jackson Brhelle found the end zone once. The Bears also showed off their aerial attack with Clayton Ennis hitting Wyatt Stebbings for the score. Sam Siebien also had a dazzling touchdown run while Guinness McKenzie led the defence with a pair of flags (tackles). ••• The North Langley junior bantam Bears fell to the Mission 9ers by a 54-0 score. Marcus Stang led the team in tackles while Dayton King came up with a quarterback sack.

Rivermen ready for puck drop

The Langley Rivermen kick off the 2015/16 hockey season with a road game against the Surrey Eagles. The Rivermen junior A hockey club will begin the BCHL season at South Surrey Arena on Sept. 11. Langley had a stellar preseason as they went undefeated during the exhibition season against fellow BCHL hockey clubs with a perfect 5-0 mark. The team’s lone blemish was a 4-3 loss last week to the Trinity Western Spartans, who play out of the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League. And even in that game, the Rivermen nearly rallied back from a 4-0 deficit, scoring three times in the third period to cut the deficit to a single goal. Rivermen fans will get their first chance to see them on home ice at the Langley Events Centre the following weekend as the Rivermen host the Prince George Spruce Kings on Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. The Spruce Kings eliminated Langley from the playoffs last season. Langley also hosts the BCHL’s newest team, the Wenatchee Wild, on Sept. 20 at 3 p.m. This year’s BCHL Bauer Showcase will once again be held at Chilliwack’s Prospera Centre, but the annual tournament will not be at the start of the season as it has traditionally been, but instead it will be held Sept. 24 to 27. The team will play all of their Saturday home games at 6 p.m.

And if the 2016 Subaru Forester is my steer, I’m heading in the right direction. With or without crying kids. The 2016 Forester 2.5i has a starting MSRP of $25,995 (excluding delivery and taxes.) The 2.0XT starts at $33,495 (excluding delivery and taxes.)

Safety Tip: The start of the school year is a great time to review the rules of the road and your kids’ route to and from school. If you’re dropping them off in a school zone, make sure they exit the car on the side closest to the sidewalk.
