Animal services switched Council decides to join FVRD program based in Chilliwack Kevin Mills Mission Record

Mission will be closing its animal control centre at the end of the year in favour of joining the Fraser Valley Regional District’s service. The decision was made by council during Tuesday night’s meeting. With its current animal control contract up in 2016, the district decided to implement the FVRD’s program, which in addition to pound services, includes licensing and bylaw enforcement, such as barking complaints, off-leash infractions and aggressive dog investigations. When the district first examined the move, several members of the public voiced opposition, wanting to keep animal control services local. A 500-signature petition against

the change was presented to council in July. “After all of the questions were answered after all of the looks we took at the whole system, we believe that this is in the best interest of taxpayers,” said Mission Mayor Randy Hawes. Abbotsford made the same decision earlier this year. While Abbotsford had previously used the pound in Chilliwack, as of January 1, the city’s animal control program is fully managed by the FVRD. Though the pound would be in Chilliwack instead of Mission, FVRD representatives said they offer a freeride-home program, and when they find licensed dogs they are usually returned within a couple of hours. While council approved the move, it did request that the

animal control officer for Mission would be a “Missionite familiar with animal control.” Council will meet with FVRD representatives to discuss the hiring process. Coun. Rhett Nicholson was the only representative at the meeting – Coun. Jenny Stevens was not in attendance – to vote against the move. He said there is little difference between the current service in Mission and that offered by the FVRD. “I think that they are pretty equal. I think the cost for the regional district is going to be a little less.” He expressed concern that five jobs in Mission will be lost and the service will no longer be run locally. “Regional services are good and bad. This one I didn’t feel was really needed.”

Mail theft suspect arrested in Mission One man is facing criminal charges after being arrested by RCMP as part of ongoing investigations of mail thefts reported to police across the Fraser Valley since early 2015. David Charles McGill, age 47, of Chilliwack faces eight charges of theft of mail, one charge of possession of break and enter instruments, and one charge of possession of a controlled substance. “Information obtained during our investigations led police to believe a blue pickup owned by Mr. McGill was involved in a number of the mail thefts being committed in the district,” said Cpl. Brock Rayworth of the RCMP Upper Fraser Valley regional detachment’s crime reduction unit.

On Friday, Aug. 28, at approximately 2:30 a.m., officers were made aware of a blue pickup truck being driven in the area of Lougheed Highway and Ashton Road in Agassiz. Officers immediately arrived at the location to find the Canada Post community mailbox damaged and compartments opened. UFVRD officers continued to investigate the incident, following a trail of eight damaged mail boxes. They then stopped the blue pickup in the 34000 block of Brient Drive in Mission. The driver, McGill, was taken into custody by police who found further evidence inside the vehicle linked to the alleged mail thefts.

An abandoned house on 3rd Ave. has a neighbour concerned about a possible fire Submitted photo hazard.

Abandoned house concerns neighbours An abandoned house on 3rd Avenue just off Grand Street has been frustrating neighbours, but it appears the District of Mission is now fully aware of the risk it poses. The home has had a car parked in the driveway, but no one lives there and the car is not working. It has been broken into and is falling apart, neighbours say. Mike Hamalainen and his fiancée live next door. They have called police and bylaw officials, as doors have been kicked in and people have entered the house, apparently sleeping in it. “We repeatedly contacted the bylaws office. We have also left messages with the fire department with no return call. Right now, I fear for our safety. At the very least, this house is a fire hazard.

“There are trees that are approximately 40 feet tall on the property that overhang our house. If they were to catch fire, there is no doubt that our house will also go up in flames,” Hamalainen wrote in an email. “Now that the people that have already broken into the house are aware of the ‘no consequences’ situation, I am sure they are letting all of their friends in their little community know about it. I am very sure that there will be more visits to the house next door,” he wrote. Hamalainen told The Record that an assistant fire chief and a fire crew visited the home Thursday. He said they now are pushing for its demolition. He said power has been disconnected and he is hopeful it will not be standing much longer.

Family physicians hard to find Province-wide doctor shortage impacts Fraser Valley communities Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

After multiple attempts to see a doctor to deal with the blisters forming under the cast on her six-year-old daughter’s arm, Julie Sidorak ended up using a clean sock and baby powder to try to fix the problem herself. She would have preferred to consult a professional, but staff at the emergency room where the cast was applied said she would have to go to her family doctor. That’s a major problem though, because almost a year after moving to Abbotsford from Calgary and looking for a family doctor, Sidorak still can’t find one. ER staff suggested she go to a walk-in clinic, noting one which is equipped to deal with casts. Sidorak called. Despite an opening time of 9 a.m., she was told there was no doctor until after 1 p.m. That afternoon, she headed to the clinic with her family. When they arrived, there was a note posted on the door. “Closed due to a lack of doctors.”

have a family doctor. Research indicates that in Mission alone, more than 8,000 people do not have a regular physician. Five years ago, the former health minister promised that everyone in B.C. needing a family doctor would have one by 2015. In 2013, the government, in partnership with Doctors of BC, expanded a pilot program called A GP For Me province-wide, in order to try and make that a reality. A GP For Me is designed to increase the capacity of the primary health care system, through efforts established by the a local

division of family practice, specifically geared to that community. One of the main stated goals is to connect every patients who wants a family doctor, with one. In April of this year, Health Minister Terry Lake said in the legislature that while 20 per cent of Albertans and 25 per cent of Quebecers don’t have a family doctor, that number is only 16 per cent in B.C, adding that the A GP for Me program has made significant strides. The Abbotsford Division of Family Practice, a non-profit society with the authority to speak for Abbotsford family physicians, is

implementing the program locally. They’ve found that about 26,000 people in the city are not attached to a family physician, while 5,000 to 6,000 people are actively looking. When health issues arise, those without a family doctor may go to walk-in clinics or even the emergency room – adding to the existing strain on those resources. With a population of nearly 140,000, Abbotsford has 126 general practitioners, but only 79 are family practice doctors who see patients in a clinical setting – the rest are hospital-based or work in maternity. When patient openings are available, it become a matter of connecting those who are looking with an available doctor. The Mission Division of Family Practice office, located on Hurd Street, has also launched the A GP for Me program. It is creating a list of people who currently do not have a family doctor. As openings occur, the person is contacted and directed to a local physician. (For more, see story on page 12).

❑❑❑ Bohdan Zajcew, strategic lead for the implementation of A GP

for Me program in Abbotsford, said research has shown there are huge benefits to having a long-term family doctor, particularly for the elderly, or people with chronic health issues. Family doctors can help provide better outcomes for patients, with lower costs to the health care system. However, he said the number of doctors accepting new patients “shifts on a week-by-week basis.” The College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. has an online search engine to find doctors who are taking new patients. Sidorak said at one point she was given an information sheet which pointed her to the website. A search turned up the names of four physicians, but as Sidorak called, she was repeatedly told those doctors weren’t accepting patients. Zajcew said the site is “well-intentioned, but unfortunately, it is not kept current.” There is no organization charged with the role of connecting patients and doctors, which is why the Abbotsford Division of Family Practice hopes to create such a system. The organization

OPINION

Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Avoid wildlife woes Bears are a serious concern in many areas of Mission. Sightings are common. What remains troubling, despite the best efforts to educate the public about bear safety, more and more bear/human encounters are occurring. And the fault lies with humans. We have slowly encroached into bears’ territory, building more homes in the wilderness, leaving animals little choice but to step into our corner of the world. Worse than that, some people put out a welcome mat, ring the dinner bell and all but invite the animals to come over. Bears are foragers, always on the look out for food, and garbage is an easy-to-find and easy-to-eat food source. People are attracting bears to their property by leaving out their garbage, then calling conservation officers

when the creatures comes around. WildSafeBC, formally Bear Aware, has asked Mission council to consider a bylaw that makes it an offence, punishable by a fine, to put garbage out at any time other than the morning of pick-up day. The only exception would be if garbage was placed in bear-proof containers. It’s unfortunate that the public cannot see the obvious benefit of keeping trash under wraps until garbage day. However, many don’t, and a fine may be the only way to convince them to change their habits. Wild animals are not going to change their natural instincts, so it’s up to us to solve the problems. Bears usually avoid contact with humans, but the smörgåsbord that we often supply is too tempting to resist. Cut off the food supply and cut down the problem.

LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Are you satisfied with the BC Hydro response to last weekend’s power outage? Here’s how you responded:

Yes 95% No 5%

Urban society slides into helplessness Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views Of all the immature, ignorant whining that came out of the recent power failure in the Lower Mainland, one example summed up the decline of our urban culture for me. It wasn’t the people who flooded 9-1-1 with calls demanding to know when their power would be restored, or complaining about their freezers. It wasn’t those on Twitter insisting BC Hydro pay for food that went bad. It was another social media moment. With part of his community without electricity for a third day, Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart went to his Facebook page, which has a wide following. There he pleaded with residents to stop phoning city hall to demand that a local big-box supermarket provide milk and eggs. Power had been restored at the store only a few hours before, in the dead of night, and it’s safe to assume that all stores were working flat out to restock

perishables. Where do people get the notion that city hall, or whatever all-powerful nanny state they imagine, controls grocery stores? How do they conclude that in the midst of the worst electrical grid failure on record, BC Hydro is going to address their personal situation above all others? Vancouver broadcast media weren’t much better. Their big focus was that BC Hydro’s website crashed, so people couldn’t call it up on their smartphones and find out instantly when their power would be back on. Some even questioned why wireless power meters didn’t help. Perhaps these were the same journalists who fed the tinfoil-hat superstition about their signals. The facts should be known by now. After an extremely dry spring and summer, a high wind shattered trees and took down more wires and poles than BC Hydro had ever coped with before. Further damage was done within areas that were already blacked out, leaving overtaxed technicians unable to accurately assess the full extent of it. In Coquitlam and elsewhere, poles were down in areas too rain-saturated for heavy

repair trucks to reach. Yes, there were some too-optimistic repair estimates given out, in response to the constant screeching for instant answers. About 15 years ago I experienced my worst power outage in the Fraser Valley. In a semi-rural area with little backup

Where do people get the notion that city hall, or whatever all-powerful nanny state they imagine, controls grocery stores?

grid capacity (since greatly improved), my family went three days without power. This was in winter, due to wind and freezing rain followed by snow and cold. Trickles of water kept pipes from freezing, and the gas stove provided a bit of heat. I heard no complaints about the crews struggling around the clock with the dangerous job of repair. Media coverage was mostly adult supervised.

Megastorm madness isn’t an isolated case. A couple of weeks before that, a temporary construction bump on the Lion’s Gate Bridge deck caused panic and rage. Aggravated by a couple of accidents on the alternate route, and fed by hysterical media, drivers of West Van luxury cars were white-knuckled. Traffic choked the region that recently declined to pay a bit more for road improvements. In both cases, people outside Lotus Land were muttering: Welcome to our world. This is pertinent to the federal election. Are you competent to save for your retirement with RRSPs and a tax-free savings account, or do you need the government to do it for you, by force? Are you capable of managing your own child care, or should the nanny state create a hugely subsidized system, which has already failed in Quebec, from coast to coast? Are you ready for the day when the machine stops? Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

YOUR VIEWS THE VALUE OF CLOSE FRIENDS

A study recently published in the American Sociological Review, based on data from the General Social Survey by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, reveal that Americans today have fewer close friends than they did just twenty years ago. The average American had only two close friends in 2004, compared to three close friends in 1985. And perhaps even more disturbing was the finding that 25 percent of Americans reported having no one to confide in concerning important matters. Besides the obvious implications of this research, which suggest we are living lonelier lives, there is also cause for concern related to the increasing lack of social support. Having friends that you can confide in and ask for help is obviously a good thing, and probably doesn’t require academic research to confirm. However, many people may not be aware of additional research which links social isolation and loneliness to mental and physical illness. We would all do well to cultivate more close friendships; and the best way to have a friend is to be a friend. Allowing someone to confide in us, or helping someone with a chore or running an errand for them creates a social safety net that will be there when we need a friend.

Improve parking before name change Should Mission become a city, rather than a district? In my opinion, no. In the Mission Record’s story from Aug. 21, it states “The city moniker could increase the ability to attract and retain business.” We don’t have parking for the businesses we have. I know of many instances where customers drive around the block three times and can’t find a parking spot. They then go somewhere else to spend their money. As far back as the 1970s, a

Mission High School teacher suggested multi-level parking in what was then the Eaton’s parking lot. Mayor Randy Hawes suggested polling the business community to see if “being a city would be an attractant.” I suggest polling the taxpayers, since it would cost about $40,000. Previously, I’ve lived in Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Vancouver and Coquitlam. Since 1973, I’ve lived in Mission and I love the “backwoods type of community,” as opposed to a “progressive city.”

Folk festival just as good the second time around This year was our family’s second year at the Mission Folk Music Festival. It was a rainy weekend, and the attendance was certainly lower than last year. However the music, energy and community was at least as amazing as it was last year! We came in from our home in Vancouver and had such an incredible time – as last year. We found that not only did the rain not detract from the won-

derful cultural experience, but in some ways it actually enhanced it! People were in closer quarters, sharing more of their experiences with one another and with the artists from around the globe. Thank you, Mission, and all the folks who make this happen. We can’t wait for next year, no matter the weather.

If I wanted to live in a city, I’d live in Vancouver. Most move here because it is a rural area. Mission was Mission City from 1892 to 1969. If it’s not broke, don’t change it. If we want to “see the community grow and prosper,” we’d do well to spend the money on parking, not a name change. When I’m asked where I live, I don’t say District of Mission, I say Mission. Cats aren’t a problem This is a comment to a letter Aug. 21, “Picking on cats.” I am a resident of Cedar Acres Trailer Park and have been for 20 years. I have had a cat for over 10 years. This cat is a part of our family as much as our children are. The landlords and agent of Cedar Acres Trailer Park say they are going to utilize a “specialist” to rid the problem of cats in the park. It’s the cats that rid the park of any problems such as mice, moles, rats, etc. It is not the cats that are the problem. I do hope that no one loses their family pet over these actions that seem to be uncalled for and unfair. S. Leeman Mission

Sharps containers coming Discarded used needles an ongoing problem Kevin Mills Mission Record

New Patients Welcome!

Sharps containers will be placed at strategic locations around Mission in an attempt to prevent used needles from being carelessly thrown away or left on the ground. Four locations – the West Coast Express station, Park Street and Fraser Crescent, the north end of the Mission Library parking lot, and an area near the Mission Museum – have been identified as hot spots for discarded needles

have to bring back the needles they are given, in order to receive new ones. Hawes said there is a growing problem in Mission of discarded needles turning up in various areas of the community including school grounds. “I am still not convinced that we are putting enough responsibility on those that are using needles. “Harm reduction to me means let’s decrease the harm to the addicts at the expense of the community,” said Hawes.

Murdered teen’s body found in Mission The grieving father of Nicholas Hannon said the family has been “devastated” to learn the 19-year-old was the victim of murder. Craig Hannon spoke Tuesday morning after police announced three people were

and will receive the new containers. “I think this is a step forward from the standpoint that we are moving towards more control on how needles are distributed,” said Mission Mayor Randy Hawes. However, he said he does not feel satisfied with harm reduction efforts in the area. “I an very much opposed to needle distribution where there is no bring back if you will. Needle exchange has to be exactly that,” he said. He believes addicts should

arrested and charged on the long weekend. “Until this weekend my family maintained a glimmer of hope that just maybe Nick would come barging through the front door and shout ‘I’m home’ (but) now we know that will never happen,” Han-

non said. IHIT Sgt. Jennifer Pound said the body of the missing teen, who disappeared Feb. 26, 2014, was discovered in a heavily wooded area near Mission over the long weekend. An autopsy has been scheduled.

Connor Angus Campbell, 21, Bradley Michael Flaherty, 20, and Keith William Tankard, 20, were arrested over the long weekend and appeared in Surrey provincial court Tuesday morning charged with first-degree murder.

Windy wedding for Mission couple A Mission bride won’t soon forget her wedding day, as the fierce windstorm of Saturday, Aug. 29 changed her plans enormously. Bride Courteney Rushworth was to be married at the Burnaby Mountain campus of Simon Fraser University (SFU). She was expecting 120 guests to help her and new husband Michael celebrate. The windstorm caused the power to go out, as was the case in much of the Lower Mainland. This happened around 12:30 p.m. The ceremony was scheduled for 3 p.m., followed by cocktails at 4 and dinner at 6. Rushworth wasn’t panicking, but she was hoping that the plans she had made could be carried out — and that there would be music. The SFU dining services catering team did everything they could to make the wedding and reception happen as the bride and groom had planned. Courteney and Michael were able to have their first dance to Luke Bryan’s To the Moon and Back. At first the SFU kitchen staff were able to work with available light. They made salads and did prep work while waiting for the lights to get back on. After an hour went by, they started using a pair of barbecues for cooking food and heating sauces. Other staff secured lanterns and candles for lighting. They got a generator for the music, and the university’s facilities services department also brought a generator and sewage truck to pump the toilets so they didn’t back up. Courteney said the power outage made the wedding even more memorable. “We just had a ton of candles lit, so it was actually kind of cool. I would actually prefer it without lights. If I was to tell anybody, I would say that it was actually kind of fun,” she said. The wedding will not soon be forgotten.

Doctor shortage dates Finding a physician in Mission back to the 1990s From 1

they near retirement. More young doctors now have spouses who are also have careers, and doctors are not working the same number of hours, and therefore are not putting in the same number of work years in return for their training.

❑❑❑

❑❑❑ Dr. Bill Cavers, immediate past-president of Doctors of BC, said the provincial doctor shortage dates back to the ’90s, when the government reduced the number of medical school graduates by 10 per cent, based on a UBC report that said there were too many doctors per capita. However, Cavers said what that report overlooked was the aging demographic of baby boomers. Now, age-related issues have hit patients who increasingly need treatment for chronic illnesses, and doctors who are slowing down as

As communities struggle for physicians in a global shortage, the reality of every Abbotsford and Mission resident having their own family doctor may not be resolved in the immediate future. The entire province needs 450 new doctors a year to replace the current outflow. UBC med school graduates 288 annually. “It’s scary,” says Cavers. But pilot projects of the A GP For Me program have been successful, he said. In White Rock/South Surrey, everyone who wants a family doctor has one, following the implementation of the program.

People in Mission who are looking for a doctor are finding help at the Mission Attachment Clinic. Kimberley Bonk, a medical office assistant, is part of the team that is matching patients with family physicians. “We see a really diverse group of patients here,” said Bonk. “These patients really need care and it gives me real joy to work in a place where I can facilitate that.” Bonk has been a medical office assistant for the past three years and part of the team at the clinic since it opened two months ago. It’s operated by the Mission Division of Family Practice, a non-profit group of local doctors who are working to help patients get better access to primary care in their community. Bonk said that she has already seen the positive impact of the clinic. “One lady was in tears because she was so thankful to have met and seen a doctor that she thought was so kind and caring. There was an elderly lady that found a doctor. She was so happy because she felt comfortable and thought she could trust the physician she had seen.” In addition to the clinic, the group has launched a central online registry called FETCH – For Everything That’s Community Health. FETCH will provide patients with easy access to information about all of the health care resources available in the community. The website is at mission. fetchbc.ca. To more information, call 604-820-1021.

MISSIONS S HOSPICE SOCIETY

New bylaw suggested to prevent attractants Kevin Mills Mission Record

Conflicts between bears and humans continue to be an issue in residential and commercial areas of Mission. As a result, WildSafeBC is asking council to create a new waste management bylaw that will contain clauses to fine people who place their garbage outside too early. Garbage is a huge attractant for bears and despite an educational campaign launched in 2010 by WildSafeBC (known then as Bear Aware) there has been little change in the public’s attractant management habits. “Garbage is the number one attractant in Mission,” said Rebecca McMurray. A WildSafeBC community coordinator, McMurray told council last week that bears become dangerous when they are “food conditioned,” meaning the majority of the bear’s food is coming from something other than natural food sources. “Once they become food conditioned they often become human habituated, which means they’ve lost their natural fear of people. That’s when they become a safety issue,” she said.

Despite efforts to educate the public about food attractants, statistics show that bears are still coming into conflict with humans. Seven bears were destroyed in Mission in 2011 and four were killed in 2012. While no bears were reported shot in 2013, the number rose to six bears killed in 2014. So far in 2015, four bears have been put down in Mission. “Garbage needs to be stored inside and placed on the curb the morning of garbage day, not the night before.” She wants a bylaw that would fine residents who place gar-

bage outside before the morning of pick-up, hoping it would motivate people to comply. If trash has to be placed outside, she suggested a bear-proof container could be used. Mission Mayor Randy Hawes said council is willing to look at a proposed bylaw. However, he had some other concerns. “We have those rot pots (for compostable waste), which, of course, the bears would target, and they aren’t bear-proof.” The bins were handed out by the district in June of 2011 in an attempt to divert garbage from the landfill and promote composting.

An evening of Flamenco music Jesse Cook coming to the Clarke Theatre stage Juno winner Jesse Cook, a renowned Flamenco guitarist, will appear at the Clarke Theatre in Mission on Saturday, Sept. 26 as part of his One World tour. For Cook, music has been a journey, both sonically and literally. After two decades of crisscrossing the world in his restless pursuit of inspiration, innovation and collaboration, he changed course for his ninth studio album, One World. Rather than travel to exotic locales, he stayed home in his studio and relied on his own devices. The album pivots between worlds – past and future, familiar and fresh, acoustic and electronic – redefined by technology.

His varied catalogue has earned 11 Juno nominations, including three in 2001. That year, he was named Juno winner of the best instrumental album, for the 2000 album Free Fall. Five of his eight albums have earned gold record status, and two others platinum. For more on Jesse Cook and his tour, visit jessecook.com. Tickets are $42.50 (plus facility fee and service charges), available at all Ticketmaster locations. They can be purchased by phone at 1-885-985-5000 or online at ticketmaster.ca. The doors open at 7 p.m., with the show starting at 7:30 p.m.

Big Brothers/Sisters open house Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley’s Mission office has moved to a new location at Heritage Park Middle School campus, 33700 Prentis Ave. The mentoring organization now shares the “Annexe” building in front of the school with Mission Community Foundation and the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre. Mentoring co-ordinator Cassie Silva says the new space is bright and welcoming and ideally situated near several partner schools. “We love our new office and would love for the

public to stop by our open house on Wednesday, Sept. 16 from 8 to 10 a.m. to learn more about available volunteer opportunities in our community.” There are currently about 20 Mission children on the wait list for a mentor. Some have been waiting over one year. Volunteer commitment can range from a few hours per month to a few hours per week, and both male and female mentors are in demand. Celebrate Culture Days Culture Days take place across B.C. on Sept. 25, 26 and 27, and there will be plenty of events in Mission. There will be a mini walking tour of historic downtown Mission, from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and 1 to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26. Tours will be limited to 20 people, so pre-registration through Mission Museum is required. Call 604-826-1011. On Friday the 25th, there will be two events at the Mission Library. A storytime is planned from 10:30 to 11 a.m. and a culture crawl takes place from 2 to 4 p.m.

The culture crawl will be a combination of art, books and a cup of tea. The public can join local artists for an afternoon that removes the barriers between artist and public – allowing creators to showcase their work, answer questions, and share their unique art-making process. Art in the Garden will take place on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is hosted by Bill Lowe and Riley Charters at 7532 Robin Crescent. Work from a variety of artists will be on display.

How passionate are your federal candidates in Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon about issues relating to seniors, children, families, people who are homeless, those who are new to Canada and others who are experiencing their own unique set of challenges and opportunities? Find out on Tuesday, Sept. 29 as Mission Community Services Society (MCSS) and its four partners showcase social services issues in the region at the Clarke Theatre from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. “Non-profit organizations in the region play key roles in their communities, and the support from the person assuming the role of our Member of Parliament will be critical in the next four years after election day on Oct. 19,” said moderator Rick Rake of MCSS. Partnering with MCSS to offer the unique federal all-candidates forum are Mission Friendship Centre, Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley, Fraser Valley Child Development Centre and Mission Association for Community Living. The public and all of the riding’s community organizations are invited to attend and ask written questions which will be presented by a panel. For more information or to offer questions for the forum, contact Rake at 604-826-3634 or email rick. rake@missioncommunityservices.com.

Chamber event: The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce together with the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board will be hosting an all-candidates event for the new Mission/Matsqui/Fraser Canyon riding on Monday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Clarke Foundation Theatre. Candidates will be questioned by a panel representing the Mission business community. In addition, those in the audience will have an opportunity to provide questions for the panel to pose to the candidates. “It’s important for not only our membership but all members of the business community to voice our concerns and determine where our candidates stand on important issues relating to business in mission,” said Dave Sawatzky, government affairs chair for the Mission chamber. “This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the candidates in person and to evaluate their responses to important issues for Mission business,” added Sawatzky. Prior to the event the chamber will be sending the candidates a set of pertinent questions. The questions and the candidates’ responses will be posted on the chamber website at missionchamber.bc.ca.

Adopt-A-Block Society’s kids’ program revamped

604-864-8856 • 1210 Sumas Way (across from Costco)

The Junior Bug Club run by the Mission AdoptA-Block Society has received a facelift. The litter abatement program for Mission kids has been updated with a new name and new logo which now adorns the club shirts, bags, and promotional materials. The new bubbly “Buggie” is designed to engage children’s creativity and desire to create positive change. “Our bug club has been a tremendous success story with incredible growth in a short period of time. At times our name was confusing for some, so we wanted to restructure the club with an appropriate name and friendly mascot that truly reflected the work of the club members,” explained Kristin Parsons, executive director of Mission Adopt-a-Block. The now re-named Junior Anti-Litter Bug Club invites children within the community to learn about the impact litter has on the environment and to become litter bug avengers by contributing to the eradication of litter in the community. Members are encouraged to reduce their own litter, stop litter bugs when they see them and appropriately dispose of litter found on the streets, parks, streams and trails by using their bug club tools (provided in their kits). New members receive a starter package that includes a membership T-shirt, litter collection bag and set of litter pickers to use whenever they see litter in the community. In addition, this package includes a litter education booklet with fun facts about litter, games, colouring and a pledge certificate that can be hung on their wall. For more information or to sign up for the club, contact Mission Adopt-A-Block at missionadoptablock.com or call 604-826-9423.

SEPTEMBER 2015

Mission City Record

Mission Mayor and Council committed to supporting local business Mayor and Council have had no time to sit back and enjoy the sunshine this summer as they made local business a priority, undertaking one of their core objectives, to gain a stronger understanding of the local business environment and the associated opportunities and challenges they are facing. Through a series of business tours organized by the Economic Development Office and joined by members of the Economic Development Select Committee (an advisory body to council made up of local business owners and managers), the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce and Community Futures North Fraser, council have been hitting the streets for one-on-one time with a variety of businesses, to gain further insight on the diverse range of goods and services available within our community. With a focus on locally owned, independent manufacturers and small businesses, the tours saw the group out for half day sessions in July and

August meeting a cross section of over twenty companies including V.I.P Soap Products, GrabA-Java Roastery, Justin Bond & Sons, and Hill’n Dale Animal Hospital and Technaflora Plant Products. Those in attendance gained first-hand experience of production processes, labor force requirements, exports and sales; and delved into some of the day to day issues these organizations are currently facing. This makes it sound like all work, but sampling home grown wines and local roasted coffee have seen the team enjoying the warm hospitality of the companies as they tour the facilities. Councillor Alexis commented “It has been an incredible opportunity for council to see and experience what is going on in the business community. At the same time we are learning what more we can do, or what we can change to make Mission a great place to do business.” Companies were welcomed to discuss concerns and challenges they are facing, and where the municipality could be of assistance. Already

the municipality has risen to the challenge offering letters of support, exploring internet connectivity options and infrastructure

requirements, to name but a few; and so far the feedback has all been good. Ray Cyr, President of Fraser Valley Building Supplies

Mission Rona noted “It was a great opportunity to meet many of the key folks down at city hall and have them showing a genuine interest in our locally owned business. Within only a couple of days of the tour action plans were initiated to address some of our concerns and opportunities, it’s nice to see such a quick response” It has also created a buzz as the companies and District share the visits on their social media channels, highlighting the value of these companies to our local economy. Louise Tran, Marketing Communications Manager for InterWrap shared tweets and said “It was a pleasure having the City of Mission accompanied by Mayor Randy Hawes visit our InterWrap Mission location during the #InvestMission visits! The tour was a great opportunity for InterWrap to showcase what we do at our plant on a daily operational basis. We are honored to contribute to the growth and development of the Mission community; this is a great chance to bring

the people together with local businesses. As we are adding production lines to our InterWrap Mission location, we are excited to be connecting and supporting Mission City.” The tours are set to continue into September including a half a day walking tour through the downtown with the Downtown Business Association and a trip to the Mission Raceway. By the time the tours are complete a tangible representation of Mission’s business environment will have been reached, giving a stronger understanding of needs, requirements and opportunities for sustainability and improved relationships. Councillor Hinds added “It has been an eye opener to see the scope and variety of businesses in Mission, along with the positive outlook for growth.” So what else is on the horizon for the Economic Development Office and council? Well, the end of August also saw the continuation of another of council’s goals and objectives with the Future of Tourism in Mission.

More than groceries: Mission City Farmers Market brings people together to build community CLICK MEDIA WORKS

The Mission City Farmers Market works to bring people and organizations together to forge a stronger community. And because of this work, they were recently chosen to receive the Community Builder Award of Excellence from the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce. At the centre is the Heart of the Market, where you find story time, music, kids’ crafts, and other entertainment. “The Heart of the Market is also the place for community groups, businesses and non-profit agencies to connect and share their information with market-goers,” says market manager Donna Gibson. “All we expect in exchange is that they become members of the market and provide materials for the kids’ craft and activities area.”

The Mission City Farmers Market has been operating at the library parking lot in downtown Mission since 2007, but has been helping locals sell their wares since 1996. Next year sees the market celebrate its 20th anniversary. Over the years, the number of vendors and products has grown to include a wider and richer variety of quality fresh produce, prepared and preserved foods and locally produced non-food items. Total vendor sales totals have increased more than 30% over the past three years, according to Gibson. “The Market has seen roughly 7,800 patrons this year,” she says, “And while that’s not a large increase in attendance over last year, the numbers show us that those who do attend are finding more things to buy and are spending more

money.” “The market has been an incubator of sorts for small, local businesses,” Gibson explains. “Several of our vendors started by selling their goods at the market and have grown their respective businesses so much that they’ve had to establish themselves in either brick-and-mortar storefronts or behind-the-scenes production facilities.” The market runs Saturdays from 9:00 – 1:00 PM, now until Oct. 10, followed by three indoor markets at the Clarke Theatre (Oct. 31, Nov. 28 and Feb. 6) and winding up with the popular indoor Seedy Saturday. The Future of Mission

As an element of their strategic focus in 2014, the Economic Development Select Committee (EDC) commissioned a graphic and digital design firm to produce 3D digital images of both the waterfront and downtown Mission. The intent was to develop a future vision of these two areas that would help create a stronger sense of direction and purpose while also conveying to the community and investors the redevelopment potential. This work was just recently completed. The imagery is compelling as it demonstrates the redevelopment potential of these priority areas of interest in our community. Because it is a digital framework, all design elements (building facades, sidewalks, and people)

can be easily changed to accommodate community input, which will be important as we update our Official Community Plan in 2015. These recently completed images are based on the Downtown Action Plan and Incentive Package and, for the waterfront, the

images are based on the market feasibility study conducted in 2010, which takes into consideration the appropriate density, market absorption rates and scale determined to be marketable and profitable for development. In other words, they are visual aids based on what is believed

to be realistically achievable and not just a creative vision. This is a very interesting and exciting time for Mission. The landscape is literally changing and current investment interest associated with commercial, industrial, recreational and residential investment in our community is growing.

A significant reason for this activity is that Mission is forecast to double in population and jobs over the next 30 years. The growth that is visibly moving west to east is obvious and keeping pace with this is the need for places to live, work and play. While this presents obvious challenges, it also presents significant opportunity. In total, six development areas will undergo this imaging exercise. In addition to downtown and the waterfront already completed, specific commercial, industrial, residential and recreational lands will receive the same treatment and will be used as a complete package for future marketing and communications exercises associated with sharing our vision for the community.
