COs ‘hard release’ three grizzlies ARNE PETRYSHEN

With the many bear sightings and the frequency of those encounters that turn nasty for the bears involved, it may be nice to hear a story with a happier ending. Jared Connatty, conservation officer, said in the case of a mature sow and her cubs, the results were positive for all involved. On Aug. 31, Conservation Officers trapped the three bears on a large ranch property just outside of Hosmer, near Fernie. Connatty noted there were ongoing occurrences involving the bears, though nothing too serious. The bear family — a smaller sow with two cubs, each around a year and a half old — had been sighted by people in the area foraging on the natural food sources. “Once in a while they would slip in and grab the odd chicken, kill a chicken — that kind of thing,” he said. “We

Conservation Officers managed to capture a family of three grizzly bears — a sow and two cubs — in the Hosmer area and then successfully released them using hard release tactics so that the bears will hopefully avoid the area in the future. Pictured above a male cub is stuck in a trap. Next to him the sow is caught in blue culvert trap. ended up deploying some trapping efforts to see if we could catch them and ended up catching all of them.” Connatty said the circumstances are always different. He compared this to the bear eutha-

nized recently in the Jimsmith area. That one was a young male grizzly specifically targeting chicken coops and getting into conflict that way. “Whereas this one kind of still showed

some natural, normal behaviours,” he said. “We collared the sow and ear pegged both of the young ones there and did what is called a hard release on site.” See RELEASE, page 4

The news that Canfor is permanently closing their Canal Flats operation indicates just how little the BC Liberals care about forest dependent communities, says Columbia River Revel-

Columbia River Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald stoke MLA Norm Macdonald.

Macdonald points to the Canal Flats closure as one in a long line of mill closures since the BC Liberal government changed the rules around “appurtenancy obligation” in the Forest Act agreement. “The way it was set up prior to 2003 by the Social Credit government was that wood from an area needed to be milled in that area,” Macdonald said. “The BC Liberals removed that obligation in 2003 and since then there has been a consol-

idation of milling. It makes sense for the companies of course, but for rural BC it leads to removal of industry. 200 mills have closed since the BC Liberals changed that policy.” Macdonald will be in Canal Flats on Monday to meet with Mayor Ute Juras and discuss the impact on her community.

Kimberley would welcome another solar farm near Cranbrook C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

Mayor Don McCormick says that Kimberley would welcome another solar farm in the area. As reported in the Daily Bulletin on Tuesday, September 8, a proposal has been referred to the Regional District of East Kootenay in late August from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Opera-

tions, involving a crown land application for an investigative license to assess the potential for a solar farm. The application covers 300 hectares and is roughly located beyond a gravel pit adjacent to the St. Mary’s River in-between Cranbrook and Fort Steele. The vision is to have three separate areas capturing sunlight on the property. Please see SOLAR, page 3

Improving adult literacy in East Kootenay, Columbia Valley

For the Townsman

The provincial government is granting $59,200 to the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy to provide residents of the East Kootenay and Columbia Valley with the literacy skills they need to participate in B.C.’s growing economy. “Literacy is a basic skill that many of us take for granted, but it’s essential for improving your career training and job prospects,” Kootenay East MLA Bill Ben-

nett said. “By assisting those who are struggling with literacy in Golden, Windermere Valley, Elk Valley, Kimberley, Creston and Cranbrook, we are helping to improve quality of life and economic opportunity in these communities.” The grant comes from the $2.4 million government has invested in community adult literacy programs in 75 B.C. communities in 2015-16. Funding is distributed to non-profit com-

For the first time in months, campfires are permitted across British Columbia. The BC Wildfire Service says half-metre by half-metre campfires are now allowed throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre, removing the last, remaining restrictions. The province’s five other fire centres have already dropped their campfire bans, and wetter conditions in the Cariboo centre have now allowed the lifting of restrictions covering

an area west of the Fraser River. It’s the first time since early July that campfires have been permitted provincewide. The Ministry of Forests took the rare step of banning campfires and all open burning earlier this summer as droughtlike conditions created an extreme fire risk. Nearly 2,000 wildfires have been recorded across B.C. since April, with the wildfire service noting just under 3,000 square kilometres of woodlands have been burned.

Summer of marksmanship Bull River Shooters had a busy summer and came away with great results! Br adley Woods

Since I last reported in June we’ve enjoyed club matches in July, August and September plus we had members represent our area and club at Canadian Nationals in Prince George as well as the Alberta Provincials both for Smallbore and Highpower! We look forward to a couple more matches this season; October 24 and November 14, which is our fun wind-up shoot! If you’re thinking about giving this game a try you should attend the October match. Please don’t be shy and don’t let your ego get in the way. We are genuinely pleased to make new friends and introduce you to our sport. We all began somewhere and we all have days when we wonder why we can’t hit the target! It’s a humbling game that has an uncanny way of making you want to come back and try again! Following will be the results from our cold and rainy September matches, followed by a summary of the Nationals and the Alberta Provincials. Saturday Sept 5 Small Bore Standard Rifle: • Match Winner – Jim Zimmerman • Master – Kalvin Marsh • AAA – Jason Marsh • AA – Jordan Marsh Small Bore Hunter Rifle: • Match Winner – Kalvin Marsh • Master – Jim Zimmerman • AAA – Kaitlynn Johnson *There were more shooters in lower classes for both guns but not enough to “hold the class.” Under NRA rules they move up for the match. Shooters still score in their respective classes, trying to advance in class and obtain personal bests, which is the most satisfying part of the sport. This striving for personal improvement (as in all sport) helps us in many other aspects of our life!

Two Standing Os for Palatchi at Studio 64

Submit ted by Mike Redfern

The Gabriel Palatchi Trio received two standing ovations, one after the other, as they played the final two numbers in a pulsating concert before a sold out house at Studio 64 on Saturday night. And no wonder the audience was so enthusiastic. The musicality and sheer energy of the trio as they pumped out a sequence of rhythmic, South American flavoured original numbers by Palatchi, along with some Palatchi twists to familiar jazz covers, was exciting to say the least. It was also

loud enough to be heard several parishes away. Ostensibly a jazz concert, the opener for a 4-concert Live at Studio 64 jazz and blues series presented by Kimberley Arts Council, this performance went far beyond jazz, or even Latin jazz, as it was billed. Palatchi grew up in Argentina, the land of the tango, and he brought that dramatic rhythm, along with samba, reggae, African, gypsy, and funk rhythms to this performance. Playing the grand piano and Nord Electro keyboard & synthesizer, sometimes simultaneously, his fingers at times whirred like a humming bird’s wings, at others pounded out the chords in a manner pretty unfamiliar to that elegant grand piano. The dynamic tempo of the piano and keyboard was more than reinforced by the electrifying

Kimberley would welcome another solar farm near Cranbrook From Page 1 As far as solar energy goes, the more the merrier, says McCormick. “I think it’s really good to see another company interested,” he said. “Critical mass is an important element of success. A stand alone is a tough slug for any business. When you get clustering, you end up with efficiencies in marketing, in sharing information.” It would not be a direct competition between Kimberley’s Sun Mine and this new solar farm, in any case, the Mayor says. First of all solar energy is unlimited in the sense that it’s there for anyone to use. And secondly, BC Hydro controls how much they will allow

to be sold back into the grid. “Because we are both selling back to the grid, you are essentially not competing,” McCormick said. The proponents— Node Engineering Corporation—are estimating as much as 45 megawatts of electricity can be produced and connected to a nearby B.C. Hydro substation. McCormick thinks that goal may be a little lofty. “It took us six years to get a 1 megawatt. BC Hydro determines what they will buy. Our license is for 2 megawatts, so we can produce that much, but we would have to double the size.” Currently, the Cranbrook proposal is only at an investiga-

tive stage and, following RDEK board approval on Friday, the proponents are allowed to install a small weather station to collect weather information. And that will take a while, McCormick says. “When you’re dealing with weather you really need to take a long term look. You need to look at your data on at least a fully year basis. For instance, August would be normally be a very good month but this year with all the smoke, we lost 20 per cent of our potential power.” With files from Trevor Crawley

drumming of Tony Ferraro, an old favourite at Studio 64 who has appeared here twice before backing other touring artists. Centre stage, Ferraro and his flying drumsticks could easily have stolen the show from a lesser artist than Palatchi. And grounding the rhythm on 5-string electric bass was another familiar musician, Doug Stephenson, also making a return appearance at Studio 64. These two seriously talented Kootenay musicians are accompanying Palatchi on the BC Interior part of his CD release tour, promoting his third album, Trivolution, released in Mexico City this June. The tour continues through the West Kootenay and Boundary regions during September before Palatchi takes off for Ontario and Quebec, there to continue the Canadian portion of a tour which started in Mexico and will ex-

tend to Argentina and Europe. Meanwhile, the Live at Studio 64 fall jazz & blues series continues with a master jazz combo, the Tyler Hornby B3 Trio on Saturday, September 26, followed by Calgary blues band, Alittle Voodoo, on October 17, and ‘lounge’ jazz pianist Alan Brecker and his quartet on November 21. A 3-concert pass can be had for $60 if you are a member of the Kimberley Arts Council, $66 if not. Similarly, individual concert tickets can be had for $22 members, $24 non-members. I’d tell you the ticket price at the door but the chances are that there won’t be any tickets left to sell at the door as these concerts now regularly sell out in advance. Macdonald, Bennett on Canal Flats mill closure From Page 1 He feels particularly frustrated about the Canal Flats closure because the economy for timber right now is favourable. “In our area we have plentiful supplies of green wood and the low Canadian dollar is a huge advantage for the export of timber. It should be good times. “But instead the BC Liberal government prefers to focus on fantasy LNG projects. They should be dealing with things that are real. The situation in Canal Flats was set up when the BC Liberals changed the rules. This government is controlled by industry, and equate the good of industry with the good of the public. But since that change in 2003 we have lost 30,000 jobs and 200 mills. There is no value added policy and exports of raw logs to China has increased eight or nine times. “Canal Flats is just one more community in a very long list but it’s our community and our workers in Canal Flats

and Kimberley that will be affected.” Kootenay East MLA and Ministry of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett says his government will be there for the people of Canal Flats. “There’s actually a program we have within the jobs ministry to help with transitions in communities where you have a major layoff like this, whether it’s a mine, saw mill, pulp mill or whatever it is. “We have a swat team of people within the jobs ministry—it’s not a huge team of people—but it’s a very experienced and skilled group that goes into communities like Canal Flats and surrounding communities like Cranbrook and up the Columbia Valley where the workers live and work with the workers and try to help them through the transition to another job. “So that is happening today, those folks mobilized yesterday as soon as we got word about this. “It’s terrible news, obviously, to the com-

munity of Canal Flats. It’s their major employer, their major economic driver and it’s going to spell big challenges for the municipality.” Meanwhile the local Steelworkers Union continues to express disappointment in how it all came down. “We’re very disappointed,” said Local President Doug Singer. “Four months after a massive layoff, that they’ve now announced a closure of the Canal Flats operation. We’re extremely disappointed the company didn’t give it more time to see if it could be a success. “There’s actually been a mill on that site or in that area for over 100 years, so the impact to the employees and the community and the families was bad enough with the layoffs, now this really is a huge impact all the way around.” “We understand there are lots of pressures on the market, but four months is not a lot of time to see whether this is a workable solution or not, and things at the plant level seemed to be going fairly well.”

George James, well known district pioneer and new resident of Chapman Camp, has written and had published, his first book, “George James – My Fourscore Years.” His book, 60 pages in length, is well bound and on good quality, easy to read paper, and was printed by the Trail Times and copies are available at the Daily Bulletin for $1.25. The story takes the form of Mr. James’ personal autobiography, starting with Part I describing his life in England. Going back to 1876, many interesting features of the past are brought to life, incidents in the life of the everyday citizen of those far-off days which are so easily forgotten or ignored in our present day life. In Part II Mr. James arrives in Canada and throughout this section of the book, we follow him through the early days of the East Kootenay, particularly Kimberley and Marysville. The book is well worth reading for in following Mr. James throughout its pages, we learn much of the history tha t has shaped his parts of the world in one man’s lifetime. NOTE: George James’ book is available at the Kimberley Heritage Museum.

Bringing out the faux-matyrs

If

Kim Davis and the “Christian Persecution Complex”

you haven’t heard about Kim Davis, you’re just not paying attention! She’s the clerk in Rowan Country, Kentucky who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same–sex couples, even after the US Supreme Court landmark ruling that states must allow same–sex couples to marry and that they must recognize same–sex marriages from other states. Ms. Davis claimed that she had a “higher loyalty to God” which superseded her loyalty to the laws of the land as made by the Supreme Court. God, she claimed, said that same–sex marriages were an abomination, and that she would be sent to hell if she issued licenses for such marriages. She may not have gone to hell, but she did go to jail last week by Judge Bunning. The good judge found Ms. Davis in contempt for defying the federal court, saying “Her good faith belief is simply not a viable defense. I myself have genuinely held religious beliefs,” and added that he took an oath of office to uphold the law. “Mrs. Davis took an oath,” he said “Oaths mean things.” After five days in jail, Ms. Davis emerged from prison to a crowd of over 3,000 cheering supporters, with Republican Presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee by her side. Her first words as she emerged through the door were “I just want to give God the glory. His people have rallied and you are a strong people!” Mike Huckabee praised Davis and crowned her as the latest victim in what he calls the “Christian Persecution Complex.” Evangelical Christians in the US, and in-

creasingly in Canada, are painting themselves as victims in an ongoing battle (their words) with the liberal, secular media. They are being persecuted, oppressed even, for being Christians. There is no issue which brings out the faux–martyrs more than the issue of gay marriage. One Christian “leader” posted a facebook rant in which he claimed that the ruling of the US Supreme Court legalizing same–sex marriages was the “beginning of the Christian Holocaust.” The video has been seen by millions, with hundreds of thousands supporting his position. The language is clearly over the top and offensive to all people of good will. Rev. Yme Other websites claim that Woensdregt people no longer have the freedom or the ability to say that they believe in traditional marriage. They may be less extreme, perhaps, but they also buy in to this silly notion that Christians are being persecuted in North America. And just you wait — it’s going to raise its ugly head again in a few months around the issue of “Merry Christmas” vs “Happy Holidays,” which is — you guess it — another sign of Christian persecution. I have just one thing to say to this. Give me a break! The Christian Right in the US wants to paint Ms Davis as another David battling the Goliath of state persecution. I want to suggest that Ms. Davis is not David, but that she is, in fact, Goliath. In her role as county clerk, she is a representative of the government. Those who cheer on Ms. Davis seem to be unaware that they are asking an agent of

the state to withhold secular rights associated with the marriage license which is granted by a secular government to consenting adults who wish to spend their lives together in a relationship of love and commitment. Kim Davis doesn’t have to agree with the law. She can have a religious objection. But as an agent of the state, she took an oath to uphold the law of the land, and her religious objection cannot supersede that oath. As Judge Bunning remarked, “Mrs. Davis took an oath. Oaths mean things.” As Goliath, Ms. Davis is the giant, the barrier, which needs to be overcome by those who know what persecution really is. Talk to any gay or lesbian person about what it’s like to be a minority and to be persecuted for their beliefs and their practice. Tomorrow is the annual AIDS Walk in Cranbrook. Unfortunately, another commitment prevents me from attending, but I have been proud over the last 11 years to offer a blessing and my wholehearted support to the GLBTQ community in Cranbrook and the work of ANKORS in our region. I am proud to be the priest at a church which has supported the AIDS walk since before I arrived in Cranbrook. In truth, Christians are not being persecuted in North America. Asking Christian people to practice compassion for those who truly have been persecuted is only asking those very Christians to follow in the road walked by Jesus. To suggest anything else is blasphemy, and dishonours the name of the one they claim to follow. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

New human ancestor discovered What’s Up? Lynsey Chutel And Malcolm Rit ter Associated Press

MAGALIESBURG, South Africa - Scientists say they’ve discovered a new member of the human family tree, revealed by a huge trove of bones in a barely accessible, pitch-dark chamber of a cave in South Africa. The creature shows a surprising mix of human-like and more primitive characteristics — some experts called it “bizarre” and “weird.” And the discovery presents some key mysteries: How old are the bones? And how did they get into that chamber, reachable only by a complicated pathway that includes squeezing through passages as narrow as about 7 1/2 inches? The bones were found by a spelunker, about 30 miles northwest of Johannesburg. The site has yielded some 1,550 specimens since its discovery in 2013. The fossils represent at least 15 individuals. Researchers named the creature Homo naledi (nahLEH-dee). That reflects the “Homo” evolutionary group, which includes modern people and our closest extinct relatives, and the word for “star” in a local language. The find was made in the Rising Star cave system. The creature, which evidently walked upright, represents a mix of traits. For example, the hands and feet look

www.nbcnews.com

A reconstruction of what Homo naledi is believed to have looked like. The newly discovered human ancestor was about 5 feet tall with a brain the size of an average orange like Homo, but the shoulders and the small brain recall Homo’s more ape-like ancestors, the researchers said. Lee Berger, a professor at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg who led the work, said naledi’s anatomy suggest that it arose at or near the root of the Homo group, which would make the species some 2.5 million to 2.8

million years old. The discovered bones themselves may be younger, said Berger, an American. The researchers said they were unable to determine an age for the fossils because of unusual characteristics of the site, but that they are still trying. Berger said researchers are not claiming that naledi was a

direct ancestor of modern-day people, and experts unconnected to the project said they believed it was not. Rick Potts, director of the human origins program at the Smithsonian Institution’s Natural History Museum, who was not involved in the discovery, said that without an age, “there’s no way we can judge the evolutionary significance of this find.” If the bones are about as old as the Homo group, that would argue that naledi is “a snapshot of ... the evolutionary experimentation that was going on right around the origin” of Homo, he said. If they are significantly younger, it either shows the naledi retained the primitive body characteristics much longer than any other known creature, or that it reevolved them, he said. Eric Delson of Lehman College in New York, who also wasn’t involved with the work, said his guess is that naledi fits within a known group of early Homo creatures from around 2 million year ago. Besides the age of the bones, another mystery is how they got into the difficult-to-reach area of the cave. The researchers said they suspect the naledi may have repeatedly deposited their dead in the room, but alternatively it may have been a death trap for individuals that found their own way in.

Yellow journalism and social media perils Just when you think you’ve seen everything, you’re proven wrong. Such is the case with this federal election and the news coming out of Ontario that Jerry Bance, a Conservative candidate, was filmed peeing into a coffee mug in someone’s kitchen during a CBC investigative report on contractors overcharging homeowners for repairs. Now that’s yellow journalism. The report in question was filmed in 2012, but is only now coming into the national spotlight because Bance is running in the election. One can only imagine the conversation inside party headquarters when the story broke. Q: “He was filmed peeing into a coffee cup in someone’s kitchen?” A: “Uh huh.” Q: “He couldn’t make it to the bathroom?” A: “When you gotta go, you gotta go.” It’s the strangest piece of election news I’ve heard in a long time, unless we include everything Donald Trump has said during this current American presidential race, but that’s a column for another issue. Bance, of course, was dropped like a hot potato by the Conservative Party, but not

before offering this mea culpa: “The footage from that day does not reflect who I am as a professional or a person. I deeply regret my actions on that day.” It’s good PR to grovel and apologize for something like that, but what everyone wants is an explanation or excuse for that kind of behaviour. Because really, what was he thinking? It’s been a bad week for Trevor Crawley the Conservative Party, which also dumped Tim Dutaud, another Ontario candidate who was outed for making crass prank calls and uploading them to Youtube. His material included faking an orgasm while speaking to a female sales rep, while other calls featured him making fun of people with disabilities. Needless to say, it didn’t take long for the party to toss him from the ticket. However, it’s not fair to bag on just the Conservative Party, as candidates from across the political spectrum have put their foot in their mouths to embarrass their respective parties. A Liberal candidate in Calgary stepped down after some offensive material was found on her Twitter social media account. Without getting into too much detail, her Letters to the Editor

tweets included encouraging someone to commit suicide, while another tweet insulted someone else by noting that their “mother should’ve used that coat hanger.” The candidate, 21-year-old Ala Buzreba, tried to use her youth as justification, saying that some of the tweets were published when she was a teenager, but eventually, she quit. Over in Atlantic Canada, NDP candidate Morgan Wheeldon resigned as a party nominee in Nova Scotia after a Facebook post accusing Israel of ethnic cleansing became public. On one hand, you wonder how these kind of people get nominated by their respective parties, but on the other hand — to play devil’s advocate — how far back into the lives of potential candidates to party screeners have to go? How many tweets and Facebook posts do party staffers have to vet? It’s easy to post something stupid on social media and regret it. It happens all the time and those kind of controversies are basically expected now in today’s elections. But getting caught on video peeing into a customer’s coffee cup in a private residence? It’s tough to flush something like that away. Trevor Crawley is a reporter with the Cranbrook Daily Townsman

“Our legs kind of ran out [in overtime] and he made four world-class, elite saves. He gave us a chance and then he was rock solid in the shootout.” The Americans opened the scoring late in the first, as Tyler Sandhu capitalized on some miscommunication deep in Ice territory. Wild Battle at the Border: Part I Introducing the Ambrose Lions and Capilano Blues

T

For the Townsman

he Wild Battle at the Border tournament brings Canadian Collegiate Basketball to Cranbrook and the East Kootenay’s. “We are so excited to bring a new, fun and economical sporting event to the area,” says organizer Al Nutini. This event is being hosted by the Mt Baker Wild Senior Girls Basketball Program and they will be raising money for the East Kootenay PARTY Program. Two teams that will be entertaining the crowds for the weekend event running Friday Sept., 25 to Sunday, Sept. 27 at Mt Baker Secondary are the Capilano Blues and the Ambrose Lions. Capilano Blues Capilano University is located in the beautiful city of North Vancouver. The women’s basketball program originated in 1978 and has built a tradition of excellence in PACWEST competition. Most recently in 2010, the Blues Women’s Basketball Program was crowned the PACWEST Provincial Champions. The Capilano Blues program is currently coached by Ramin Sadghiani who has an extensive history in coaching in British Columbia. Sadghiani is a long time resident of North Vancouver and prior to his coaching position at Capilano University was the assistant coach with the 2012 UBC Thunderbirds who won the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Pacific West Division Championship. Sadghiana has transferred that competitive approach to the Blues basketball program. “We had a successful 2013-14 season and are looking forward to coming to Cranbrook to start our season by beating some ACAC (Alberta Collegiate Athletic Conference) teams,” said Sadghiani. Ambrose Lions Ambrose University is located in Southwest Calgary and is a small non denominational Christian School. This will be Ambrose’s first year as a member of the ACAC. Ambrose has been part of Alberta Collegiate Athletic League (ACAL) prior to their move for the 2014-15 season. Ambrose had a very successful season losing only two games but were upset in playoffs. Coach Garth Mortis is excited to be moving up to ACAC and coming to Cranbrook for the Wild Battle at the Border. Ambrose team has a local Cranbrook player, Katie Nutini, who last year was named ACAL 1st team All Star, Team Most Valuable Player and team Most Sportsmanlike Player. Nutini has played many games and practiced many hours in the Mount Baker gym. “I am so excited to come back and play at Mt Baker. It was the gym where I fell in love with basketball and I am so excited to share it with my teammates,” Nutini said. Elementary Cheer Zone:

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You could be surprised by the difference one day can make. Whatever you are doing, you’ll do it 100 percent. Opportunities will stem from this type of diligence in the near future. Confirm a meeting time and location; otherwise, a misunderstanding could happen. Tonight: Slow down. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Seek out a loved one. Some of you might be eyeing a new friendship that has the potential to become more. Others will express enthusiasm when you contact them. You might feel as if a certain interaction is too easy. Tonight: Tap into your creativity. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Spend some time at home. You might consider taking off today and making it a long weekend. Others will reach out to you to see what you are up to. At some point, your front door could seem like a revolving door. Tonight: Do not fight the inevita-

ble. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You could be in a position where you need to give directions and organize others. You might be overwhelmed by everything you have to do. You’ll realize that you can get your to-do list done faster than you had anticipated. Tonight: Favorite people, favorite spot. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You tend to have a moderate amount of self-control, but when you go overboard, you do it with great finesse. Today’s temptation to indulge emerges stronger than usual. You will dive right in with a devil-maycare attitude. Tonight: Make the most of every moment. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You have emerged from a period where you have been away from the daily grind. You will be enthusiastic, no matter what happens or which way you turn. You appear to be a supreme optimist. See the results that a positive attitude brings. Tonight: Go for togetherness. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Tundra

You might want to handle a personal matter differently from how you have in the recent past. At this point, your mind is working overtime in order to see and evaluate the various approaches you can take. Don’t do anything just yet! Tonight: Not to be found. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Wherever you go, people are drawn to you. You might wonder what is going on. Don’t. Simply enjoy yourself and the present moment. People will be instrumental to your decisions and ability to build support for a project. Tonight: A force to be dealt with. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Pressure builds around your professional life. You might not be happy about everything you have to do. You’ll wonder when your time will come to go out and be fancy-free. In any case, your time to transform into a social butterfly will occur soon. Tonight: Take the lead. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) A call might bring with it an unexpected journey or some form

of good news. You could decide not to share your news, but understand that your face will give you away. Your happiness simply can’t be contained. Tonight: Be direct, and don’t confuse a situation. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You often wonder what is going on inside a loved one’s mind. What you find out might not satisfy your curiosity. Instead of asking questions, give this person space to reveal him- or herself. You will be quite pleased with the results. Tonight: Add fun to the moment. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) The socialite within you will be delighted, as a lot of people seem to be seeking you out. You could get so busy that you can’t make time for an important person in your life. Don’t sing the blues; just make what you want happen. Tonight: A little weary. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am a widow in my 80s. I recently was introduced to a widower who seemed friendly and had a good sense of humor. He asked me out for dinner and the conversation went well. But when he took me home, he kissed me and grabbed my breast. I was absolutely not expecting this from a supposedly “nice” guy, and especially not on a first date. What on earth would he expect on a second date? At my age, I am not looking for a romantic or physical relationship. I should have slapped his face for being so forward, or at least let him know it was not appropriate. This man has called several times since then, but I will not answer the phone because I don’t know how to tell him that I don’t want to accompany him anywhere ever again. I have many widowed lady friends, and we get together often for lunches, movies, etc., and I am perfectly happy with that. I don’t need to feel uncomfortable in the presence of a man who can’t keep his hands to himself. How can I get him to stop calling me? -- Lonely, Not Lusting Dear Lonely: Please be honest with this lothario. Tell him you were highly offended by his vulgar display at the end of your date, and you are not interested in seeing him again. Add that you are not looking for a physical relationship and he would be better off with someone who is. We suggest you write these words down, practice saying them, and then read them to Mr. Inappropriate when he next calls so you don’t stumble or become flustered. He deserves to know the truth, and you deserve to be left in peace. Dear Annie: Would you clarify the difference between hoarding and being a filthy pig housekeeper? Hoarding, to me, is filling your home with stuff that you cannot part with. It has nothing to do with keeping a house clean. After getting a few glimpses of hoarders on TV, I don’t understand how this can be called “entertainment.” Who would allow their home to be filmed for all the world to see? I believe these scenes are staged. This sick curiosity, spoon-fed by the networks, is but another example of society’s downslide. Any comment? -- Disgusted with Programming Dear Disgusted: Hoarding is a form of mental illness, and we agree that it should not be displayed for public amusement. Nonetheless, as long as people watch these programs and advertisers pay to promote their products on them, they will continue. The upside is, such programs bring awareness to the public and, in most instances, these homes are professionally cleaned and the inhabitants receive therapy. It is not filmed without their agreement. While some scenes may be staged, we can assure you that hoarders actually do live like this. It’s terribly sad. Annie’s Snippet for Patriot Day (Credit Sandy Dahl, wife of Flight 93 pilot Jason Dahl at a speech in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.) “If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate.” Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. continue to turn to DAILY NEWSPAPERS for breaking news, analysis of the day’s top events and entertaining content, according to the latest NADbank data. “Increased media competition, besides raising the editorial bar at dailies, doesn’t change one crucial fact”, says media buyer Bruce Claassen, CEO of GenesisVizeum (Toronto) and chair of Aegis Media Canada. “Daily newspapers offer the same benefits they always have: the ability to reach customers quickly. Only with a daily paper are you able to choose to do an ad and run with it in two days, and reach a sizable portion of the population, in a fairly mass, fairly broad and fairly fast way. That’s a set of qualities very few other media can match.” FOR DAILY DELIVERY OF YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER CALL US!
