Golf offers lesson on emotional payoffs Wellness Matters

The red flags go up and a hush settles over the crowd. Even the cars on the roadway come to a full stop. This is golf at its best—and this happened every time the young LPGA players teed up at the CP Women’s Open at the Vancouver Golf

Club last month. Four years ago Michelle Wie won the same LPGA tournament, held on the same golf course. However, then classified an “amateur”, she took home none of the purse. She returned after turning pro to take a large piece of the $2 million-plus prize. Brook Henderson won the Cambia

Portland Classic by eight strokes a week earlier and became the thirdyoungest champion in LPGA Tour history. She finished this tournament 4-underpar. At 17 years, Henderson had earned $195,000 US and $661,818 in 10 events this year. Last year, this young golfer could have played at the Vancouver Golf Club for free.

According to a recent NAVICOM study, there are close to 5.7 million golfers in Canada. There are perhaps, 20 really, really good, professional Canadian players. The frustrations of golf are well known. Mark Twain is quoted as having said that golf is ‘a good walk spoiled’. Sportswriter Jim Murray once said, “Golf is not a game, it’s bondage. It was obviously devised by a man torn with guilt, eager to atone for his sins.” Their humour notwithstanding, one has to scratch their head and ask ‘why, just why do people keep doing things that bring such frustration, anguish and in some cases, harm?” Behavioural psychologists believe ‘psychological payoffs’ hook people into repeated behaviour patterns. Providing some sort of reward, these rewards can be positive, however, eventually a downside may appear.

Common examples of these types of behaviour are: problematic ways of interacting with people, overeating, procrastinating, excessive spending, exercising, TV and/or Internet. In psychology speak; ‘payoffs’ come in two varieties; getting more of something wanted and experiencing less of what is not wanted. These experiences, ‘pay off’ to different areas: emotions, thoughts, physical being and situations. What is important to recognize is that

unwanted behaviours are often associated with a mixture of wanted and unwanted results. And that unwanted behaviour will have multiple and different types of payoffs. There is no one simple answer. A good example of this is when a person breaks their steadfast diet and overeats. They might feel guilt or shame while also feeling excitement for rebelling against self-imposed rules. At the same time, they may also be craving ‘sweets’ and after

all, they think, they deserve to enjoy the party. Emotionally, one of the most important payoffs associated with unwanted behaviour is reduced anxiety, tension or stress. There is a large variety of different types of unwanted behaviours to help people reduce these uncomfortable feelings. Unfortunately, the reduction is temporary and thereby hooks people. Thought payoffs come in many different types and are at the root of most unwanted behaviours. A predominant type of thought payoff is distraction from thinking about something that is difficult think about— needing to ask for change, making a change and believing change will actually occur. People numb themselves out with distractions to keep from thinking about aspects of their life/ relationships and become stuck in negative thinking. Physical and situational payoffs deal with what happens after the unwanted behaviour. Does doing the unwanted behaviour ‘get you out of’ something you didn’t want to do or something that would be difficult to do? Does sabotaging relationships mean avoiding closeness and commitment issues that seem too difficult to bridge? Learning about what psychological needs are entangled in a person’s unwanted behaviour can lead to alternative coping strategies and more personal satisfaction in life. AGRICULTURE: | Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District promotes Farmers’ Appreciation Week in the Alberni Valley.

KATYA SLEPIAN/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

ACRD and Bulldogs’ members are asking Bulldogs fans to ‘bring a farmer’ to the ‘Dogs home opener on Sept. 19.

The AlberniClayoquot Regional District celebrates the sixth annual Farmers’ Appreciation Week Sept. 12–19 with a couple of events leading up to Family Farm day on Sept. 20. On Saturday, Sept. 19 the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and the ACRD are celebrating the farming community. Bulldogs hockey fans are encouraged to buy a ticket for a farmer and bring them to the Sept. 19 opening night game. Tickets are available from the bulldogs office.

Farmers can be found throughout our region, from the farmers markets and agricultural fields in the Alberni Valley to the seafood farmers on the west coast. Help celebrate their contributions by taking a farmer out to the hockey game. Every ticket for a farmer qualifies the purchaser to enter the draw for dinner for four at Drinkwaters Social House. The draw will be made during the first intermission on Sept. 19. Sunday, Sept. 20 is the fifth annual

Alberni Valley Family Farms Day. Eight local farms will be open to the public for free selfguided tours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include activities for children, local recipe books and farm fresh local products for purchase. Learn about issues facing farmers. The farm tour

Alberni Valley Transition Town Society presents Passive House Revolution, a new documentary film chronicling the most significant development in energy-efficient construction in a generation, Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at Char’s Landing. For 20 years the passive house standard has been spreading across Europe, applied both to residential and commercial buildings. Now, leading-edge architects and builders are bringing this standard to the United States in order to realize the benefits of creating and retrofitting buildings that will use 80 to 90 per cent less heating and cooling energy—a reduction far greater than any other available construction standard can deliver, according to the film’s director, Faith Morgan. Passive House Revolution profiles builders in action as they construct some of the first passive house buildings

victim of one of these horrendous attacks, they were blamed for it, as was the owner. But who was really at fault? Believing the myth that it’s all how you raise them is what killed the innocent toddler. Did the pit bull advocacy camp take any responsibility in that? Of course they didn’t. Like vultures, so many of their hardcore members preyed on the grieving mother and father with “I’m sorry for your loss, but it’s not the dog’s fault” type messages. When Jeff and Kimberly Borchardt failed to be silenced and continued to share their story, warning others not

after a pit bull sunk his powerful jaws into the face of my friend’s eight-year-old son, leaving a gaping wound in his cheek, requiring 40 stitches and scarring him for life. According to the pit bull apologists, the boy, who had simply pet his friend’s dog, must have provoked the attack. The pet’s owner was faulted as well. “There are no bad dogs, only bad owners,” was repeated incessantly. It’s one of their most popular mantras, but how do they explain all the tragedies caused by

(or insert any other breed) bite more; you’re a dog racist; you’re a dog hater; all dogs bite; all dogs kill; cars kill more people; people kill more people; coconuts kill more people; and the list went on. The familiar myths were often written in the most aggressive language and tone imaginable, and not one person provided any evidence to dispute the thoroughly researched facts I presented. As vile as some of the messages were, they failed to surprise or intimidate me—but that’s only because I’ve written on this topic before and I’ve learned what to expect from previous feedback, as well as from reading comments under pit bull attack stories in the news. My first glimpse of this combative crowd came four years ago

n my last column about pit bulls I described how canines bred for hundreds of years to be champion dog killers are not a safe family pet. I supported facts such as pit bulls kill and severely injure more humans and animals than all other breeds combined with links to comprehensive studies, essays and statistics from several reputable sources. I also made the prediction there would be an onslaught of hostility over my ignorance and demands that I do my research. Within moments of the article being published there were countless online comments and e-mails stating exactly that. It was obvious many hadn’t even bothered to read what I wrote. I was inundated with the usual rhetoric: pit bulls get a bad rap; it’s all how you raise them; blame the deed not the breed; pit bulls are harmless wiggle butts; they were bred to be nanny dogs; it’s impossible to identify a pit bull; the media only reports pit bull attacks; poodles

pit bulls raised from puppyhood by good, responsible owners who trained them to be safe family pets? People like Susan Iwicki believed this myth until her two pit bulls attacked her friend’s 14-month-old son who was in her care at the time. How could this have happened when she had done everything right? She’d neutered and spayed her pups as soon as they were old enough, she socialized them, gave them lots of love and attention, and her three-yearold dogs had never shown any signs of aggression before they suddenly assaulted her while she was holding Daxton on her hip. Without any provocation or warning their genetics kicked in and they attacked her and savaged him for 15 torturous minutes before killing him. His parents were shattered beyond repair, and, like every

FAMILY LAW

DUNCAN ALLEN LAW

Laura Allen

Kara Duncan

Is there any way I can get legal advice from a lawyer without paying for a full retainer? While full representation is usually best, there are other options. “Unbundled” is a term used to describe legal services that are broken down into discrete tasks as a way of lowering the cost of litigation and improving access to justice. Lawyers are able to provide assistance with one, but not necessarily all, aspects of a legal matter, and the client represents themselves for other parts. This could mean that you hire a lawyer to draft documents for you, do legal research for you, or help you plan your trial strategy. This arrangement has become particularly popular in family law. Please contact us for more information.
