Provincial seniors’ advocate finds holes in home support By Tom Fletcher Black Press A third of people caring for a frail senior at home are in distress, and yet some provincial supports such as adult day programs remain under-used, according to a new
report from B.C.’s Seniors Advocate. A survey of health assessments for 30,000 B.C. seniors found that the majority of those who report fatigue and other stresses from caring for a relative or friend aren’t using pro-
vincial programs. B.C. offers three kinds of respite services, adult day programs, respite beds in care facilities that offer care for up to 30 days at a time, and home support visits from care aides.
Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie said availability of programs is better in urban areas than rural ones, but in general B.C. offers less respite care than Alberta and has more unpaid caregivers reporting dis-
tress. Mackenzie says increasing availability for adult day programs could reduce emergency visits from complex home care patients by a third, and hospital admissions by half, detecting medication
or other health problems before they produce a hospital visit. One puzzling result from the survey is that while there are waiting lists for adult day programs in B.C., one out of four spaces is empty each day.

B.C. Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie. Mackenzie said there may be logistical problems with home care patients, such as a need to attend medical appointments at the same time as the day program is offered. Mackenzie isn’t suggesting governmentpaid substitutes can replace volunteer caregivers, most of whom are spouses or other relatives, but says they should have more opportunities to take a break. “Caregivers do it all,” she said. “Sometimes it is is simple as driving mum to the doctor’s office. Other times it is as complicated as insulin injections or changing catheter bags. “Sometimes it is dropping in on mum and dad at the end of the work day and other times it is living with your wife of 65-plus years as she surrenders to the ravages of dementia, does not know who you are, cannot be left alone and must be fed and toileted.” Health Minister Terry Lake said the province has increased see Advocate page 5

Mackenzie said the number of adult day program clients and days utilized has declined in the last three years, and the number of respite beds at care facilities also appears to be down. The survey found that only half of the clients registered for home support reported receiving a home visit in the previous seven days. Mulcair unveils health care strategy in Cranbrook
PHOTO SUBMITTED
NDP leader Thomas Mulcair visited a private home in Cranbrook on Monday before making an annoucement on a national dementia and Alzheimer’s strategy. NDP Leader Tom Mulcair was in Cranbrook recently, where he made a stop
at a private residence to talk with supporters and unveil another plank in the NDP
platform. He focused on help for Canadians living with Alzheimer’s dis-
ease or dementia and their families, as he unveiled more details of his comprehensive plan to advance health care while undoing decades of Conservative and Liberal cuts. “Stephen Harper has left important health issues like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease without resources or leadership, just as the number of Canadians living with the conditions is expected to double,” said Mulcair. “Our vision for health care, where you need it, when you need it, includes a major effort to lower the impact of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia on Canadians and
their families.” An NDP government will work with provinces and territories, and invest $40 million to create a national Alzheimer’s and Dementia Strategy that will: • Support screening, early diagnosis and treatment to help slow progression of the conditions; • Improve resources for newly diagnosed patients and their families to access needed care; • Fund additional Alzheimer’s and dementia research, ensuring that activities are being coordinated to maximize resources and results. “To ensure the effectiveness of
our national strategy, we will create the Canadian Alzheimer’s and Dementia Partnership,” said Mulcair.“This will bring governments, researchers, the Alzheimer Society and others together to maximize support for patients and families, while reversing the damage of Stephen Harper’s lost decade.” Mulcair will continue to announce his bold public health care strategy for Canadians in the coming days. The NDP will also release a full costing prior to Thursday’s debate and is calling on Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau to do the same.

The Weekend View
Letter: Refugee child calamity In the Kootenays, residents have sponsored some 300 refugees to our small towns in the past 40 years. Longlasting agencies such as Cambodia Support Group and Friends of Burma - plus casespecific groups and numerous churches - settled them in Cranbrook, Creston, Fernie, Golden, Invermere-Fairmont, Kimberley, Nelson, Rossland, Sparwood, Trail-Castlegar and Wasa. For hundreds more, we found sponsors as far east as Ontario and in towns as tiny as Horsefly BC and Lumsden SK. The superb record of refugee success shows that Canada’s historic, world-leading welcome far outweighed its cost in economic and societal gains – not least with countless workers to replace our retiring baby-boomers. We are appalled by the Harper government’s wholesale slashing of refugee policy.
Friday, September 18, 2015 Kootenay News Advertiser
We especially protest caps and limits on Private Sponsorship of Refugees, limits that block our privately funded aid! Refugees even repay their plane fares and are costneutral to federal coffers – but still, private sponsorship has been hindered and cut back since 2011. The inhumane changes do not help refugees, sponsors, or Canada. Harper and his team have blood on their hands in the deaths of three innocent Syrian children, The heartless, government-spawned rejection of their case also violated the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child. And around the world, millions of refugees are stuck in camps for 17 years on average! Thousands could and should become Canadian wage-earners and taxpayers, bolstering our workforce and filling our schools. We need them and they need our welcome.
This country’s great concern for refugees is abused by government policies that violate Canadian and international statutes and standards. This government has no business crushing Canada’s generous outreach – or it world-leading prominence in refugee aid, as shown in extracts from a United Nations website, http://www.unhcr.org/ pages/49c3646c467page1.html : “More than 60 individuals, groups or organizations have won the Nansen Refugee Award since it was inaugurated in 1954... (Canada is) the only country to have received the award as a nation… 1986 (awarded to) The People of Canada, in recognition of their essential and constant contribution to the cause of refugees within their country and around the world. Canada is a leading contributor to international humanitarian and refugee aid programs. Canada has, from the beginning, supported international efforts on behalf
of refugees. It has one of the best records for resettlement of refugees and is a leading UNHCR donor.” One of my uncles co-founded the U.N. Refugee Agency, now UNHCR; service to the needy at home and abroad is “in the blood” of our generous country’s generous people. The Harper Conservatives violate our rights as Canadian and world citizens by defying our principles, blocking our efforts, and eviscerating our country’s reputation. We call for Canada to reopen and fast-track all refugee channels; to reduce red tape and simplify procedures; to mandate a 60- to 90-day maximum processing in direst need; and to meet worst crises without slowing regular refugee streams. ~Arne Sahlen, President Cambodia Support Group (est. 1983) Kimberley BC csgcanada@outlook. com 250-427-2159
Letter: How about a night speed limit? The Department of Highways should implement reduced “night-time” speed limit along Highway 3 along the city “agricultural fields” just east of Cranbrook.. Question: How much animal carnage does it take to finally realize that the yellow sign picture of an animal does not work often enough.? Motorists do not heed these signs. I witnessed a tow truck pulling out another car from the ditch, just this morning. Blood patches from road kills are common along that piece of highway and in my view, preventable. Out of province drivers are not aware or seem to care that this is a “real hazard”. Animals are slaughtered and vehicles have been “totaled off ” every year for decades. When a collision occurs, the so called “dumb animal”, gets the blame.
Who is around to challenge the driving behavior of the “much smarter” human being at 2 am,? It’s my word against the dead elks. Deer collisions are even less respected than elk collisions and seem less noteworthy. I have personally witnessed other drivers actually getting mad and passing me when I slow down to let an elk herd cross the highway, at night. They never even seen them until they were right beside me in the passing lane. Then locked up their brakes and screeched to a stop just in time to prevent another preventable animal / vehicle collision. Wow, talk about being in your “own world” with the music going, friends around, and the wide open highway ahead with very little traffic. Many people step on it and go even faster under these condi-
tions. A “night-time” limit of 75-80 km hour speed limit combined with some RCMP enforcement would make a huge reduction in animals killed every year along that 5 km stretch. Example: The town of Jaffray, just east of Cranbrook, has had a 70 km/h zone both day and night for several kilometers for several years. Marysville has the same idea. This reduced speed limit can be implemented pro-actively or re-actively. People shouldn’t have to get killed for this idea to make sense. Bears feed on carrion. It takes a graphic hospital picture and an exciting newspaper story to get some public attention. Storyline: A local elk hunter crosses paths with a sow grizzly with 2 cubs and gets roughed up, but survived. This happened last week near the very area that I am writing about. ~Bill Sleightholm Cranbrook, B.C

(From left) Donna Grainger of the EKFH & Brenna Baker of the SPCA say thanks to BC Hydro and the money it has helped to raise for the EKFH and the BCSPCA.
It’s been seven years since BC Hydro said goodbye to two of their own in a tragic helicopter crash. Since the time of their loss the local BC Hydro office has remained steadfast in honouring the two with an organized golf get together focused on raising funds for the family’s chosen charities. Since 2008 the Hydro charity golf evening has raised over $24,000 for two charities; EKFH (in honour of Robert Lehmann) and BCSPCA (in honour of Dirk Rozenboom). Last week charity representatives Donna Grainger and Brenna Baker got together to share their thanks to
BC Hydro and event organizer Ian Kozicky. The funds raised over the past several years have been dedicating to improving the health of people and animals associated with the two organizations. A gift in memory can make a lasting impact, whether it is a gift during a lifetime, a bequest or a planned gift in a will these gifts can continue to help those in need or promote a favourite cause. EKFH & BCSPCA are grateful to work with BC Hydro to honour the wishes of the Lehmann and Rozenboom families.

2015 Mitsubishi RVR The RVR performs a myriad of people- and cargo-hauling tasks with minimal effort and fuel consumption. It’s also the last Mitsubishi to be built in North America, as the automaker recently announced closure of its manufacturing facility in Normal, Ill. For the 2016 model year, the RVR will join the larger Outlander tall wagon and the Lancer sedan that are shipped here from Japan. The RVR is actually based on the Lancer sedan platform, but is kin to the larger Outlander. With the arrival of the significantly reworked 2016 Outlander, the 2015 RVR now looks quite dissimilar (it will receive similar updating for 2016.) Not that there’s anything visually askew with the current RVR and its open-mouth grille that can be easily spotted from afar. For anyone who considers the look to be too-over-the-top, consider the equally sizable frontages on a number of current Toyota and Lexus vehicles. The cabin is about mid-pack for passenger space and comes
up shy on stowage area behind the split-folding back seat when compared to the front-running Honda CR-V and Ford Escape. On the plus side, the fulsome rear doors lead to a generously sized split-folding rear bench and an extra-wide liftgate makes the loading/unloading of your gear less of a chore. For drivers, the RVR’s gauges and controls are pretty straightforward, although it takes some fiddling with the ventilation system to get just the right mix of temperature and fresh air. The view in all directions is ideal, but assistance from the standard backup camera is there when you need it. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine produces 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque in the base RVR ES, SE, Limited and GT, two-and all-wheel-drive models. For 2015, Mitsubishi makes available a 2.4-litre fourcylinder rated at 168 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque. It’s optional in the Limited and GT AWC (all-wheel-drive) trims. The 2.0 can be had with a five-speed manual transmission,

but only when the base frontwheel-drive ES and SE models are specified. With this combination, fuel economy is rated at 9.9 l/100 km in the city and 7.6 on the highway. Available on all but the RVR ES is Mitsubishi’s next-generation continuously variable transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters controlling seven builtin steps that mimic a traditional

Safety Tip:
Although perhaps not as detailed as other interiors in this class, the RVR works just fine. The lack of transmission/engine noise is what we’re most interested in, anyway.

The demolition derby, hosted by the Fernie Lions Club, has become an annual tradition in Fernie. by Leah Scheitel The Free Press What started as a small demolition derby in Hosmer in the 1970s has grown into a Labour Day tradition that most Fernie locals look forward to every year. The Lions Club Demolition Derby provides a day of
entertainment, with approximately 5,000 people showing up to watch the debauchery. It is the main fundraiser for the Lions Club, with all admission proceeds - $10 per adult and $5 for youth and students - going towards the club. The event features different categories
of cars and trucks competing, trying to smash into each other with their back ends so not to harm their engines. The event has become a Fernie attraction, with many locals hosting brunches and parties in honour of the occasion. It takes roughly 100 volunteers to produce
the derby, which has raised over half a million dollars for the Lions Club since its conception 40 years ago. The event is also known for highly-valued 50/50 draw, which was close to $5,000 for the winning ticket this year.

old, riders may show off their favorite stride bike, 4-wheel bike or standard 2-wheel bicycle. As for the 30 min. & 60 min. trail options, race organizer Charlie Cooper provides this description: “The trails just above the College are mostly double-track and very smooth, but there’s also a fun section of single-track called Roller Coaster that will have riders twist & turn their way downhill as fast as they want back to the finish. It’s a loop with just a little bit of climbing and lots of room for riders to pass each other.” Riders of all abilities are invited to attend this exciting event, and organizers have kept the entry fee at only $10. Each rider will enjoy a well-organized race, receive a goodie bag and be able to restore their energy levels at the Stix Shack after crossing the finish line. Registration is available online until Friday night, September 18 at www. rmevents.com and limited race day registration will be accepted at the event. Checkin & late registration will begin at 12:15pm on Saturday and races will begin at 1:00pm. After young riders show their stuff, Sunday will test mountain bikers with their skills and endurance over a 6 hour period of cross-country riding on the 13 km loop in the Cranbrook Community Forest. Organizer Cooper advises mountain bikers to “enjoy the smooth & subtle uphills that gain 365m of elevation throughout the entire loop, and to remain focused during the see Six in the Stix page 27
Grants available to reduce wildfire risk The B.C. government and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities are providing new grants totalling $500,000 to help communities identify and take action to reduce wildfire risks on private land. Fifty grants of up to $10,000 each will be made available to local governments and First Nations through the Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative (SWPI). “Homeowners who live in interface areas can help protect their properties from wildfires by using FireSmart principles. This new grant program will help communities and First Nations raise awareness of this important work and become recognized as FireSmart Communities,” said Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson. The 2016 SWPI FireSmart Grant program will support communities to plan for wildfire prevention activities on private lands, as identified through the FireSmart Communities Program. FireSmart activities help decrease wildfire threats to homes and property and can prevent damage to structures, increase the effectiveness of firefighters and safeguard fire-suppression resources. Funding provided through the 2016 SWPI FireSmart Grant program may be used to:
* Enhance public awareness of FireSmart principles. * Increase community participation in FireSmart activities.

Paws for a Cause walk Cruelty never takes a vacation. That’s why staff and volunteers at the East Kootenay BC SPCA Branch are hoping the community will rally behind this year’s Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause Walk. “We’re hoping community residents will come on out and support a great cause,” said branch manager Brenna Baker. Funds raised by the Paws for a Cause walk go toward areas like cruelty investigations, Baker notes, and helps cats like Nelson, who was found by the highway in Cranbrook last year, emaciated, shot several times with a pellet gun and horrible gash in his neck. While Nelson has since recovered and is happily living out the rest of his nine lives with a loving family, so many more need help, every day, Baker says. This year, the walk is happening in more than 30 B.C. communities in September and October, and Baker wants Cranbrook to be among the most supportive communi-
ties in the province. “After the walk there will be a fun dog show, a BBQ, raffle and silent auction table, and our infamous hot dog eating contest for dogs!” Baker said. To sign up for this year’s Paws for a Cause event in Cranbrook, which happens on Sunday, Sept. 20 starting at 10 a.m. at the East Kootenay BC SPCA Branch (3339 Highway 3 and 95, Cranbrook), visit spca.bc.ca/walk or register the day of the event.

It’s difficult for those of us who have only known peace to truly understand the horrors of war and to appreciate the level of sacrifice that families make during the armed conflicts in which Canada has participated. Every November 11th we have an opportunity to honour the memory of those who lost their lives and to salute those who today fight for our freedom and peace.
Help us remember those from our region by sending us their photograph and story. Please mail, email or drop off to: The Kootenay Advertiser 1510-2nd St. N, Cranbrook BC, V1C 3L2 advertising@kootenayadvertiser.com NO LATER THAN: October 9th Please include the following information: Name of the Veteran, regiment, years of service, did he/she live in the area, where? Local author writes about vehicle experiences in Cuba served, along with the many classic cars featured in his photos. He says that ufortunately officials in charge of this unique heritage have no knowledge or experience for developing into potential tourist attractions, and “they appear loathe to
accept outside advice.” Hungrywolf left Cuba disappointed over this and says he has no further plans to go back to Cuba. Hungrywolf took his first photo of Canadian railroading in 1963, at age nineteen, of a steam
locomotive having its tender filled from a wooden water tank along a forest branchline on Vancouver Island. Since then he’s taken thousands of photos of Canadian railroading, and gathered thousands more, dating back to the
1870s. Fifteen of Adolf Hungrywolf’s approximately fifty books are about railroading, He intends to produce a cross-Canada magnum opus on railroading called Vintage Canadian, showcasing 600 colour slides and 800 b&w photos.

East Kootenay author Adolf Hungrywolf recently presented “Vintage Cubano,” to the manager of Central Patria, a sugar factory turned into a museum for steam train operations and old cars. “Most important to me,” he said, “is that my friends whose pictures are in the book would otherwise never get a chance to see it.” Vintage Cubano is a retrospective that Hungrywolf gathered from 1993 to 2005, during which period he spent 18 months in Cuba. He recorded hundreds of narrowand standard-gauge locomotives and countless old American cars for his 320-page, allcolour book. Among the institutions HungryWolf visited was the Central Patria sugar factory, since turned into a museum outside the colonial city of Moron, near the tourist resort of Cayo Coco. He also donated some of his mounted photographs. The price of Vintage Cubano: Adventures with Old Cars, Antique Trains, and Friendly People (Hayden Consulting $60 U.S.), a hardcover, is approximately $75 Cdn, the equivalent of approximately four months of average wages in Cuba, so he also took twelve unbound copies along to give out in pieces to friends who live too far from the libraries and museums. Although steam stopped working regularly in Cuba ten years ago, most of the century-old American locomotives seen in the book have been pre-

Hugs: A big hug to the lady at the drive thru window who was so kind to take the change I had (not quite enough) for my coffee and muffin so I didn’t have to use my bank card. Much appreciated! Slugs: To the city for not addressing the concerns of taxpayers with regard to adding another stop sign at the the busy intersection of 22nd Ave S (top of Victoria Ave S) and 13th St. S. Does a serious accident or death need to occur here in order to get sufficient signage at this dangerous intersection?!

Hugs: Huge hugs to the City and the Tamarack Mall for fixing up the exit/entrance to the mall from Victoria Avenue! It was extremely difficult and dangerous trying to turn at the 90 degree angle or wreck your car by driving up on the curb in order to avoid hitting the car coming out. What a nice surprise to find this all fixed up when we returned from vacation in August! Hugs: To Lorne at TLC Upholstery. I needed some fasteners to complete a project for a fundraiser for the Fernie Library. When he knew I was volunteering & donating, he gave me all I needed at no charge. Hugs: To the young man in Fernie who gave us his 2 hour parking ticket he didn’t need to use when I picked my husband up after his cataract surgery. Pass it on he said. I didn’t get his name, but wish to acknowledge his generosity. Slugs: To everyone speeding through school zones. I realize school is just back in, but please, please slow down. Keep our children safe! School zones are 8am-5pm, but even after 5pm, watch for children playing at the schools.
Hugs: We the Tenants of, “The Trinity Lodge” in Fernie would like to thank the two lovely Ladies who brought, Bag Lunches and Meat & Cheese Trays left over from the, Mine Rescue Competitions. They were Very Good and Really Appreciated. Thank You once again. Hugs:To the countless volunteers and fabulous sponsors who did such a great job with the Fondo this year – congratulations each and every one of you for a job well done! My husband and I and a Calgary couple entered this year and we were all impressed with how well the event was organized, how well marked the routes were and courteous and pleasant all of the volunteers were. The buffet at the St. Eugene at the end of the Fondo was also very good! Kudos to everyone involved in making this such a pleasant experience!!! And to mother nature for such a glorious day to be biking! Slugs: I would like to place the following slug to business owners who refuse to have bicycle racks available to their customers. Some of us do not own greenhouse gas emitting gas guzzlers!

Wildsight members will be descending upon downtown, in area parks, walkways, beaches, and at the Cranbrook Airport to collect as many butts as possible. The goal is collect 200 pounds of waste this time around. An earlier collection effort took place in April of this year in which citizens dropped off 49 pounds of butts. The butts will be sent out for recycling to a company named Terracycle which then
turns the waste into pallets, park benches and flower pots and other useful items. In Canada Terracycle currently recycles the cellulose from the butts into a plastic which is mixed with other plastics and then make the material into shipping pallets. Tamarack Centre is asking the community to help reduce toxic waste from the environment by collecting cigarette butts from offices, homes,

public spaces, restaurants and places of business. Cigarette butts leach harmful chemicals into water sources and are poisonous to wildlife. 8,000 tonnes of cigarette butts are dropped by Canadians each year and can take 15 years to decompose. Borgogelli says, “Our goal is to collect as much as we can by the first snowfall and to collect butts on an on-going basis and get the community involved with a scheduled clean-up day each year.” Butt out bins are located throughout the city and at Tamarack Centre for year-round collection. Smokers are asked to place extinguished butts in the bins which are then collected by Tamarack Centre staff. Tamarack Centre is challenging other communities to collect cigarette waste in an effort to keep cities beautiful and wildlife and water sources safe from unwanted toxins. What can be collected: • all parts of extinguished cigarettes • cigarette filters • partial cigarettes • cigar stubs • outer plastic packaging • inner foil packaging • rolling paper For more inform at i o n visit TamarackCentre.ca.

FOREST INDUSTRY Our continued Commitment to our customers means that we don’t take short cuts in
Established circa 1920 as Forest Fire Prevention Week, the intention was to encourage greater public awareness towards Canada’s forests. At the time, there was no apparent shortage of trees for industrial
expansion – the greatest threat came from forest fires, due mainly to human causes. Since then National Forest Week, as it was renamed in 1967, has evolved to encompass the many and varied human and environmental
aspects of Canada’s forest resources – past, present and future. Although special activities are promoted across Canada, National Forest Week remains first and foremost a challenge to individual Canadians to learn
more about their forest heritage and support greater recognition of this valuable resource. National Forest Week is observed annually during the last full week of September, Sunday through Saturday. National Tree Day

astating impact on public safety and property. This past season, the Southeast Fire Centre responded to 45 fires of note within their area, some of them being right
outside Cranbrook, like the Cherry Lake fire. Here is some information and tips about the causes and how to manage your fire activity to make sure you are not the cause of
the next big fire for the area. Managing fire activity: Many fires occur in spring and early summer when human activity increases. Grass burning and spring
cleanup fires occasionally escape control and result in wildfires. When summer arrives, the number of people in the woods increases and as they travel, recreationalists can accidentally
cause fires. The number of escaped fires resulting from backyard burning can be reduced by adhering to see Wildfire page 20

safe burning practices. People doing backyard burning must have hand tools, water and enough people on hand to keep the fire in check. Fires must not be lit or allowed to continue to burn when the wind is strong enough to cause sparks to be carried to other combustible material or when a notice banning or restricting the use of open fire is in effect. Grass fires are a major concern for fire fighters. Grass fires that get out of control can cause serious damage. People must remember to place a firebreak around the perimetre of the fire area. Fires can escape easily if a wind
picks up. Fires that get away can quickly engulf fences, power poles and buildings and can also spread to neighbouring property or forested areas. Careless use of campfires is one of the leading causes of forest fires. When building a campfire, select your campsite carefully. Prepare your campfire by removing all leaves, twigs and other flammable material from the area. Choose a proper fire pit or make a ring of rocks at least three metres from trees, shrubs, structures and debris. Don’t leave a campfire unattended, and do keep a pail of water close by at all times. Be certain your campfire is completely extinguished before you go to bed or

leave the area. Pour water on the fire and douse the site thoroughly. Stir the campfire until there are no embers and the ashes are cold to the touch. Another cause of wildfires does not arise from accidents or carelessness, but from arson. Every year, arsonists throughout the province start fires that result in a high financial loss, as well as risk to property, homes, wildlife, and people. Arson is a crime and any knowledge of this activity should be reported. A person may have permission to burn, but it could be the start of a forest fire. in, the persons doing the burning may be responsible for fire fighting and other costs. Other prevention considerations: • Do not burn in windy conditions. • Do not discard smoking materials from vehicles, use interior ashtrays. • Lawn & farm equipment should have properly working spark arresters to prevent sparks from exiting through the exhaust pipes. • All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) produce an enormous amount of heat and can ignite brush from their exhaust systems. Next spring, Leisure Services, City of Cranbrook and our Society will plant an Autumn Blaze Maple tree in Moir Park honoring these wonderful young individuals. A plaque with their names will be placed
on the tree. They , and all of us, will be able to watch the tree grow, just as we all help to grow ‘Peace’ in the world. All of the entries will be on display for the public on Sept. 20 at 1pm in Rotary Park where the Celebration for Peace will kick off. Please come out and support our young citizens and enjoy the Celebration for Peace.

1. Straighten Up! At the end of the season, it is important to get out in the garden to remove and throw out any diseased plant material. While composting yard waste is usually a good idea, you should not put any infected leaves or stems into the compost bin. The temperature in the bin might not be high enough to kill pathogens and diseases could overwinter in the soil. 2. Get Messy! When you are looking at healthy plant material, leaving it in place for the winter months might actually be a good idea and time saver. Dead leaves and seed pods lined with frost can look beautiful and hold snow in place, protecting the crowns of perennials. Spent annuals will break down (partially) and feed the soil. 3. Ride the Green Wave. If you are looking for a lush lawn in the spring, you should give your turf some attention in the fall. Topdressing, overseeding bare spots or even seeding a new lawn are all best done in the fall. Now is also the time for weed control. The dandelions that will be in bloom in your lawn in the spring are there now in their immature form. Proper treatment now will weaken weeds and Mother Nature might help finishing them off over the winter. 4. To Rake or not to Rake. Grass

benefits from sunlight as long as it is still green, so getting those leaves off the lawn will make your turf happy. It will also prevent them from matting down and smothering your lawn in the spring. You can go ahead and forget about the leaves gathered in your flowerbeds. They actually make a great winter mulch and not having to rake and bag the leaves saves you time and energy. 5. A Cover-Up Operation. Adding a good two to four layer of mulch over the bare spots in your shrub and flower beds can help you cut down on the amounts of weeds you will have next spring. It will also help the soil preserve moisture and keep its temperature more constant through the winter months. This results in less stress and less chance of winter kill for your plants. So mulching not only looks good, it does good as well. 6. Healthy Soil = Healthy Plants. Fall is a good time to find out about the quality of your soil and add some organic matter. With organic matter, you increase a sandy soil’s ability to retain water and make a clay soil more crumbly. Digging in your compost is a great way to add organic matter. Cooler temperatures slow the decomposition process, so harvest finished compost from your pile in the fall, use what you can to enhance your garden soil and store the rest in a dry place for the spring to make room in the com-
poster. 7. Plant a Tree! Fall is a great time to plant trees and shrubs. The ground is still warm, helping roots grow, but days are getting cooler, putting less stress on the plant. More rain will also help you keep the plants nice and moist, but you should keep watering as needed until the ground freezes. 8. Neat Little Packages. One of the easiest ways of creating a colourful and low-maintenance spring garden is planting bulbs in the fall. Bulbs for spring-bloomers such as daffodils, tulips and crocus, are compact little bundles with everything they need to grow next season. Just dig a whole, plant the bulbs according to instructions and settle down for the cold winter months, awaiting the spring show. 9. Plant the Seed. Some annuals, including sweet peas, pansies, ornamental cabbage and snapdragons, really don’t mind a bit of frost in the spring. You can sow seeds for them now and let them sit dormant through the winter. Any plant listed “hardy annual” in the seed catalogues should also do well with fall seeding. 10. Keep the Water Works Going. Until everything goes dormant , make sure your garden still gets enough water. Trees, especially evergreens, need to store water while they still can to help the fight off the cold, drying winds of winter.

The new gazebo, pathways, and gardens will encourage all ages and abilities to enjoy the fruits and vegetables of their labours, and create a place for all ages to share gardening knowledge with their fellow community members. Dirk de Geus, the Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook Food Sustainability Coordinator is very excited to see the project come to frui-
tion. “With help from community members including local organizations, we are leveraging funding and building from the ground up. Increasing the accessibility will better expand who can utilize the garden, especially through the installation of the pathway, that is under construction, the gazebo, and self-wicking beds created from repurposed freezers. These freezer beds increase accessibility by allowing the gar-
dener to get involved without bending down.” The project would not have been possible without grant funds as well as the great effort of many community members including Dave Check who volunteered his time operating the bobcat, and organizations such as Tyee Log & Timber, and Kimberley Alpine Resort. Everyone is invited and anyone who would like to help
harvest apples for the celebration is invited to meet at the garden at 10am on September 20th. Those with an abundance of apples are asked to bring them down for juicing from noon onwards. Anyone looking for more information regarding this event or other activities is encouraged to visit w w w. w i l d s i g h t . c a / kimcran, call 250-4279325 x 221 or email dirk@wildsight.ca.
