Victim stabbed on stairway Two knife incidents in Mission in as many days

Mission RCMP continue to investigate a stabbing incident Tuesday afternoon that sent one man to hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. The incident occurred on Second Avenue at approximately 3:30 p.m. A 28-year-old man was walking up the stairs, between

the Mission Museum and the Mission Community Services building, when the suspect, walking down the same stairway, stabbed him in the left arm. The victim ran away and into the community services building for safety. Rick Rake, a program co-ordinator at Mission Community Services, administered first aid until an ambulance arrived.

“He was just sitting in a chair in our lobby,” said Rake. “We just calmed him down and put disinfectant pads on

The Dewdney Slough Bridge was closed Thursday morning after the bridge deck began to sag. As of noon yesterday, the bridge was closed and traffic was being detoured away. There is no timeline on when the damage will be repaired. “It’s just dropped down,” said Gina McMann, who works at the Dewdney Pub. “It’s not like broken and hanging or anything. across the structure, the sag was worse. A Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure spokesperson said crews are continuing to assess the bridge and no traffic will be permitted to cross. Ministry staff and contractors have set up a detour to Highway 1. “We know this is a long detour and will inconvenience people. Crews are working as fast as they safely can to assess the scene and do any repair work that might be necessary,” the spokesperson wrote in an email to the Record. “We’ll continue to provide updates through DriveBC on our progress and alternative routes.” The Dewdney Bridge is on Highway 7, just outside of Mission. Firefighters pull for charity More than $9,000 raised for Muscular Dystrophy Kevin Mills Mission Record

The inaugural Mission Firefighters Fire Truck Pull took place on Saturday as 14 teams battled it out for fun and bragging rights. The event pitted each team, many of which showed up in elaborate costumes, against the

others to see who could pull a fire truck in the fastest time. In the end, the Mission Saints – a team of local, non-firefighting residents – took home top prize. Mission firefighter Todd Earnshaw organized the event and was pleasantly surprised by the huge response it received. “Everybody seemed to have a great time,” he said.

Water levels on the rise Stage 2 sprinkling restrictions still in effect Due to recent heavy rains, Mission and Abbotsford have relaxed their water-use restrictions. Over 330 mm of rain fell on Dickson Lake, the municipalities’ water source, from Aug. 27 to Sept. 1, according to the district. Because of how much the lake’s water level has risen, some lawn watering will now be allowed. Water use restrictions are now dropped down to Stage 2, from the Stage 3 restrictions that were in place since June 29. Stage 2 allows lawn sprinkling twice a week, between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Even-numbered addresses can water on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and odd-numbered addresses can water on Thursdays and Sundays. New permits will once again be issued to property owners with newly seeded or sodded lawns who wish to water daily. On July 3, the Dickson Lake water level was at 634.8 m, by Aug 29 it hit a yearly low of 632.1 m. As of Sept 15 it had risen to 634.2 m. “With the recent precipitation, the level at Dickson Lake has risen to a point where we are no longer concerned,” said Tracy Kyle, Mission’s director of engineering and public works. “However, we will continue to monitor the recharge at Dickson Lake over the coming weeks and residents are reminded that Stage 2 restrictions will remain in place until September 30.” Stage 2 restrictions were adopted from May 1 to Sept. 30 this year, one month earlier than the usual period of June 1 to Sept. 30, due to a smaller-than-usual winter snow pack.

Hundreds of people came out to watch the competition, which was held in front of the Mission Fire Hall on Seventh Avenue. While an official total has yet to be calculated, Earnshaw said more than $9,000 has been raised for Muscular Dystrophy Canada, making it one of the most successful fundraisers he’s ever organized. Earnshaw was looking for a different way, other than the annual boot campaign, to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy, and the truck pull seemed like a family-friendly was to support a good cause. The positive response has ensured that a second annual event will take place. Other winners at the event included the “Vinions” squad, who won best costumes. The group of Emergency Services employees were dressed in Minion T-shirts, from the popular children’s movies. The Honeybadgers, an allgirls squad, raised the most money, bringing in $785.

Second stabbing in two days Victim rushed to hospital after altercation at Canadian Tire A man was taken to hospital in serious condition after being stabbed at the Canadian Tire store in Mission. The incident occurred at approximately 8 p.m. Wednesday. While police have not released an official statement, it is believed an argument broke out between two men in the store and then moved to the parking lot of the London Avenue location. The victim, said to be in his 40s, was stabbed once in the stomach. The suspect, in his 20s, remained on scene and has been taken into custody. This is the second stabbing incident in two days in Mission. On Tuesday afternoon, a man was stabbed while walking up the stairway on Second Avenue, between the Mission Museum and the Community Services building. The suspect in that stabbing is still at large.

Police seek help to find missing Mission man The Mission RCMP are asking the public for help to locate a missing Mission man. Sean Scott, 45, was last seen at his care home in Mission on the morning of Friday, Sept. 11. His family is concerned for his well-being as they have not had any contact with him since. His current whereabouts is unknown. Scott does not have a vehicle and travels primarily by public transit. He is believed to have recently been

in the Kitsilano area and has been known to frequent the downtown east side of Vancouver. Scott is 5’10” and 135 pounds with short brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing long green shorts, a long-sleeved green shirt, running shoes and carrying a dark backpack. Anyone who has seen Scott or has information on his whereabouts is asked to immediately call the Mission RCMP at 604-820-7161 or their local police department.

Terry Fox Run helps keep legacy going Three and a half decades ago, a young Canadian man whose name no one outside his circle of family, friends and medical professionals had ever heard, dipped his prosthetic leg in the Atlantic Ocean and set out on the journey of a lifetime. Thirty five years later, you’d be hard pressed to find a person in Canada who is unfamiliar with Terry Fox – or throughout much of the world, for that matter. In the decades since his Marathon of Hope was cut short by the return of the cancer that claimed his leg – and eventually his life – Terry’s journey has been taken up by countless participants across the globe, with millions of dollars raised for cancer research in the process. B.C. Views “I am tired of managing poverty.” The words of Lake Babine Nation Chief Wilf Adam were quoted by both Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad and Premier Christy Clark at their second annual meeting with aboriginal leaders around the province. In her closing remarks, Clark repeated her aim to continue economic development and resource revenue sharing that have dominated the government’s approach in recent years. “Let’s eliminate poverty in First Nations communities,” she said, adding “the only way we can fight poverty is to grow the economy.” Not surprisingly, Clark’s chosen example was the potential of liquefied natural gas development for the Haisla Nation near Kitimat. That and similar proposals require new gas pipelines. And as is customary in B.C., what people most often hear about are threats and wild claims regarding protests

such as the Unist’ot’en camp near Smithers, set up to block a gas pipeline. There was a round of this in late August, after Grand Chief Stewart Phillip of the militant Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs claimed hundreds of RCMP officers were about to descend on the camp. This echoed previous false claims made by self-styled anarchists such as Victoria’s Zoe Blunt, who has been organizing outside support for the camp for the last couple of years. Media jumped at the prospect of another Gustafson Lake-style confrontation. This prompted an unusual statement from Cpl. Janelle Shoihet of the North District RCMP. “To clarify, the B.C. RCMP has no intention of ‘taking down the camp’ set up by the Unist’ot’en,” she said, emphasizing that police are not taking sides or acting as security for pipeline exploration crews being harassed by protesters, who have token support from a couple of dissident members of a Wet’suwet’en clan. Four elected chiefs of the Wet’suwet’en issued their own statement, to correct media coverage that represents the Unist’ot’en as speaking for their communities. “Our Nations support responsible resource development as a way to bring First Nations out of poverty and bring opportunities for

our young people,” said Burns Lake Band Chief Dan George. Wet’suwet’en First Nation Chief Karen Ogen said job and benefit agreements for the Coastal GasLink pipeline were entered into after careful consideration, and she objected to protests from outsiders, some from outside the country.

Ross spoke out in support of the elected Wet’suwet’en chiefs in their efforts to resolve the dispute with Unist’ot’en members. “Opposition is the easiest job in the world,” he said. “What is difficult is finding an answer when a First Nations mother has concerns about her child’s future. “Politicians are quick to shout out sound bites and get into camera shots, but where are the cameras when another First Nations member takes their own life or when they pass away from highway/alcohol related deaths?” Ross noted that recent court decisions have put B.C. aboriginal leaders in the best position they have ever had, with governments and development project proponents coming to them “with inclusion in mind” after decades of resource development that has passed them by. You wouldn’t know it most days, but First Nations along both the Coastal GasLink and Pacific Trails gas pipelines have agreed to them. unteers doing the work!) 5. Thou shalt not demean thy fellow contributors by denigrating their status (referring to their activities as “amateur hour at the park”). 6. Thou shalt treat thy fellow employees with both humility and dignity. 7. Thou shalt not murder the observatory project, for it will serve the community well (you proclaimed the project “dead”) but its death has been much overrated. 8. Thou shalt not look gift horses in the mouth regarding the observatory ($100,000 from the provincial government and

$20,000 from Morning Rotary). Above monies must be returned to donors if not used for specified purposes. 9. Thou shalt keep the Sabbath Day holy and use it for soul-searching and self-improvement. 10. Final words: Thou shalt listen to those who advise you in thy search for truth and justice. Abandoned house still a problem I just got home from work and, to my surprise, I heard voices in the back yard of the abandoned house next door to me – 32977 3rd Ave. I ran outside to find a man, a woman, and a little boy who looks to be around eight years old inside the yard. They were walking around behind the blue fence that the district has put up, which has since been pulled back. I said to them, “You shouldn’t be back there. That house is condemned and there are things that could definitely be harmful to you.” The woman said, “Oh,that’s OK, we live across the alley and we wanted to check it out. We saw a guy two hours ago leaving this yard with a chandelier, so we came to see what’s up with

this house.” Now, I am to understand that we are waiting to hear about a possible sale of the property that may or may not reset the clock at 30 days before any demolition is required to be done. Once again, I feel like I’ve been punched in the stomach, worrying about my family and my home. At the very least, this house is still very accessible to a recurring criminal element. When they are in that yard, they have a clear view of our house. We have put up with this situation for a very long time. Not only does it directly affect the value of our property, but it also has the danger of fire. Mike Hamalainen Mission

Can the district successfully maintain the park? On Aug. 29, a severe windstorm caused significant damage in the Valley. Mission’s jewel, Fraser River Heritage Park, was left with numerous tree limbs fallen, some serious damage to some trees, leaves

fallen everywhere, etc. The park was a mess, but over the next few days, Mission Heritage Association staff and volunteers tackled the cleanup job and put everything back to normal.

On Sept. 13, two weeks later, we participated in the annual Paws for a Cause Walk for the SPCA in Abbotsford’s Mill Lake Park, the jewel of that city. Fallen trees, limbs, and leaves still litter the

ground everywhere there. It looked like the windstorm hit just the day before. We couldn’t help but wonder if this unfortunate civic inattention might raise concern for the future

Film crew shoots downtown Movie Garage Sale Mystery uses several Mission locales

Shoppers in the downtown core may have noticed lights, cameras and plenty of action in the past few days. A film crew from Bargain Street Productions in Vancouver is using several Mission locations for the film Garage Sale Mystery: Guilty Until Proven Innocent. The new movie is one in a series of Garage Sale Mystery productions. Sadie Anne McMurray Antiques and Mission City Pawn Shop, both on First Avenue, were used for both interior and exterior shoots as well as Generation Iron Fitness on the Lougheed Highway. He defined the downtown core as First and Second avenues as well as Railway. “We treat that whole core as one entity,” he said. “The public library and the steps by the museum are well known… The steps tend to attract people because it is a convenient place to sit and hang out.” However, incidents that do occur are usually isolated. “Typical incidents involve the people who hang out there, not random citizens going about their business,” said Wright. “They are known parties in a dispute.” He also noted the RCMP is continuing its dedicated downtown foot patrol. “So we do have members down there, typically five days a week, specifically in the downtown core.”

Celebrating three decades Hospice founder looks back at how it started Kevin Mills Mission Record

It’s been three decades since Lilian Dudfield decided to take action, and next week, her foresight will be celebrated. The Mission Hospice Society is hosting its 30th anniversary party on September 24 and everyone is invited to attend. Dudfield, who founded the society in 1985, will be one of several honoured guests at the event. A lifelong member of the society, Dudfield began the society “primarily because I’m not very happy with the idea of death.” She first started contemplating the idea while working as an administrator for a care home in Prince George. She didn’t like the procedure used to deal with terminally ill patients. “They would put them in a room by themselves when they were dying. And I got to know these people and I didn’t feel they should be on their own,” said Dudfield. She used to sneak into their rooms, hold patients’ hands and talk to them. “Even if they are unconscious I still think they can hear you and I don’t think anybody should die alone.” When she arrived in Mission in 1974, Dudfield became a medical office assistant.

DUDFIELD After viewing a six-week television special on the Knowledge Network about hospice and palliative care, Dudfield attended an information meeting in Abbotsford. Inspired after the meeting, Dudfield and Abbotsford’s Jeanette Poulin agreed that a hospice program was needed in the Valley. They decided to hold their own meeting to see if others were interested in forming a group. To their surprise, more than 100 people showed up. Dudfield took the names of all the people from Mission and the Hospice Society was born. “We found that it was so needed,” she said. Dudfield’s husband had

passed away in 1979 and there were no grief recovery programs for her at that time. Now the society could help others. “Not that we were counsellors, but we listened.” She said that at that time, “you couldn’t talk to people about dying” – it just wasn’t done. During the early years, it was difficult to get the word out to the public– no one wanted to hear about it, and it took a long time before people were comfortable with the idea. Dudfield remembers one occasion when the chairman of the society stated he thought that hospice wasn’t working and the society should close down. “I said across my dead body, it wasn’t going to shut down.” The past 30 years have proved her correct. The Sept. 24 open house/celebration runs from 3 to 7 p.m. at 32180 Hillcrest Ave. As well as recognizing 30 years of hospice, the event will also commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the Christine Morrison Hospice. PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE The District of Mission is seeking nine Mission residents to sit on the new Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. The Committee will be made up of nine individuals who have experience or an interest in opportunities related to trails, parks, recreational programs or other related matters and can work in a collaborative fashion with staff, user groups and members of the general public. Hike For Hospice on Sunday Fundraising event starts at 10 a.m. at Heritage Park Mission Hospice Society is planning its annual Hike for Hospice. For the past 30 years, the hospice has provided service to people with terminal illnesses, and those who are grieving. It is seeking members of the community to join supporters on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. at Fraser River Heritage Park for the annual Hike For Hospice.

Funds raised through this event will help to support the society’s many palliative and bereavement programs. The Elks Club will be providing lunch, and organizers have some great prizes to be won by collecting the most pledges. Outlaws return to the ice, defeat Kodiaks Mission’s Junior B hockey squad prepares for Saturday night rematch The shots were fast and furious in an evenly matched home opener for the Aldergrove Kodiaks but the Mission City Outlaws were the ones to find the back of the net. The Outlaws took the game 6-3, Sept. 9 at Aldergrove Arena before a full house of Junior B hockey fans. Shots on goal were 38-37 in favour of the Outlaws but it was a couple of penalty kills which wore down the Kodiaks and gave the Outlaws the upper hand. The Outlaws scored in one of four power plays while the Kodiaks scratched for two. The Outlaws were up 2-1 in the first period but the second period was a saw-off with two more goals for each team. The Outlaws scored at the six-minute mark of the third to bring it up to 5-3, and ended the night with an empty-netter for the win. Mission’s first line of vet-

erans did the yeoman’s work that night, with Ryan Sharma earning first star for two goals and David McGowan the second star for three assists. On Saturday night, the Outlaws hosted the Langley Knights in its home opener and ended up on the wrong side of a 4-3 score in overtime. Kolby Steen, David McGowan and Kyle Lennea scored for Mission who had a 3-1 lead at one point in the game. However, Langley scored three straight to take the win. The Outlaws played again last night in Richmond, but the score was unavailable at press time. The Outlaws next home game is on Saturday, September 19 when the Aldergrove Kodiaks come to the Mission Leisure Centre arena. Puck drops at 8 p.m.

Mission man wins $1 million Locally purchased scratch-and-win ticket pays off Mission resident Michael Mitchell never thought he would reel in $1 million on a Scratch & Win ticket until he did just that last week. The TV host of BC Outdoors Sport Fishing was returning home from filming when he decided to scratch his Extreme Millions ticket. That’s when he discovered he was a millionaire! “I had to ask my dad to check the ticket over because it wasn’t registering that I had won $1 million. I still don’t think it has sunk in for me,” said Mitchell. “I smiled when I got the ticket validated because the store clerk was so excited and immediately gave me a high five.” Aside from sharing the news with his father, Mitchell told his wife about winning the million and at first, she didn’t believe him. “She jokes with me and says things like, should I be asking a millionaire to do the dishes?” said Mitchell.

BC provides $29,600 in literacy funding The provincial government is granting $29,600 to Mission Literacy in Motion to provide residents of Mission with the literacy skills they need. “Community adult literacy programs deliver training close to home,” Abbotsford-Mission MLA Simon Gibson said. “Helping adult learners improve their reading and writing permits them to enter skills training programs and secure a good job.” The grant comes from the $2.4 million govern-

ment has invested in community adult literacy programs in 75 B.C. communities in 2015-16. Funding is distributed to non-profit community groups to offer free literacy training that is easily accessible in local places such as schools, Aboriginal friendship centres and community centres. The program is tailored to suit the needs of any adult with low-literacy ability, and is delivered by trained volunteers offering one-to-one tutoring or small-group classes.

But at least, if you’re seriously injured, you can sue for significant compensation. Of course, if you’re partly to blame for the altercation, that will cut into what you can collect from your assailant. A recent case dealt with such a situation, and shows how serious the health and financial fallout from a physical attack can be.

Mark filed a civil lawsuit for compensation. His version of events had been accepted in the criminal trial – criminal trials require a higher standard of proof than civil trials. The civil court accepted and also believed Mark’s version of what happened. It decided Chuck was far and away the most to blame for Mark’s injuries. But Mark was also at fault a bit – he would have been safer to stay in the house and call the police, rather than Stanley T. Cope coming out unarmed.

Mark (all names changed), 39 at the time of trial, was renting a house on Chuck’s blueberry farm, where he lived with his common-law wife and growing family. He’d lived there for four years, but bad blood had developed between Mark and his landlord Chuck in the last couple of years.

Chuck and his family lived in another house on the blueberry farm, near Mark’s rented house. One evening, while drunk, Chuck drove over to Mark’s house carrying a one-metre long metal bar. Before driving over, he called Mark and threatened to hurt or kill him. When he arrived, he struck and broke a window of Mark’s rented house with the metal bar, ripping the curtain. He then parked his truck a bit further away but came back to the rented house, metal bar in hand. Mark, watching TV with his family at the time, felt he had to come out of the house to protect his family. He was unarmed and Chuck struck him on the head with the metal bar. The bar had about six inches of fresh blood on it afterwards. Mark fell down, but soon after was able to get up and pin Chuck down. The police were called and took Chuck away. Chuck was criminally charged with making death threats, assault with a weapon and assault

causing bodily harm. He was convicted and faced a long jail sentence.

Due to the blow to his head, Mark suffered hearing problems such as tinnitus (ringing of the ears) and acusis (over-sensitive hearing), balance problems, fatigue and other health difficulties. His ability to hold a permanent job was gone, probably forever. Admittedly, Mark had a pretty checkered past, some criminal convictions, a very spotty work history and little education (he never even finished Grades 10 or 11, having dropped out of both grades). Factoring everything in, the court decided Mark should get compensation for his non-pecuniary damages (“pain and suffering”), loss of earning capacity going forward, future care costs and more, totalling about $350,000. I had the opportunity to participate in the first annual Sikh Spirit Ride on Aug. 15 from Mission to Surrey. I haven’t been on my bike since our Cycling4Diversity event last May and all I can say is my biking muscles need a bit of pedaling. Overall, I had a wonderful time and met lots of wonderful riders and actually got to wear a turban for the second time in my life. The first time is when I got married. Wearing a turban is not as easy as people may think. I applaud the people who do, because on occasion people do like to stare or take second looks, which can be difficult. I have often been told by some that I am the whitest East Indian they have ever met. Actually, I am extremely proud of my Sikh heritage and was honoured to support my community in this endeavour. Sundeep Kaur, camp director at Khalsa Centre in Miracle Valley, said, “The Sikh Spirit Bike Ride’s goal was to raise awareness about the Sikh faith and we also rode for healthy minds, body and souls.”

Our bike ride began at Khalsa Centre at Miracle Valley in Mission at 6 a.m. It was raining, but we kept our spirits high and even did a little prayer for the rain to stop. We had 38 riders for our 90-km ride, ages nine to 58 years, with various fitness levels, from B.C., Texas, Scotland, England and of course, Mission and Abbotsford. “We were escorted by the Mission RCMP and would like to thank them for keeping us safe. We are super happy with the success of our first annual ride and hope our ride continues to get bigger and we can raise awareness of health and the Sikh faith,” said Kaur. I had the opportunity to meet Bob Ahuja on this day, who is from Abbotsford. He got involved in 2009 with the Ride to Conquer Cancer from Vancouver to Seattle and Sears National Kids Cancer Ride in honour of his two cousins who passed away due to cancer. In a few short days, he will be again dipping his wheel in the Pacific Ocean and riding east to Halifax as a national rider. “I hope to reach out to all British Columbians that somebody out there will want to do the ride next year and also donate even a dollar to help reach my goal of $25,000.”

TO ROW THE OARS OR UNFURL THE SAILS Our journey through life is sometimes described as a boat ride. Sometimes we take an active role in that ride, steering the boat or rowing the oars. Other times, we take a more passive role, unfurling the sails and letting the wind pull us along. There are times in life when we must be active to get what we want; a rowboat won’t go very far on calm water without someone working the oars. But there are times in life when we really don’t have much control over things, and we can just go with the flow. But even then, we need to make sure we are facing in the right direction. A strong wind may make our journey a lot easier, but only if the boat is pointing in the right direction. We are all on a journey to the heart of God. Sometimes we need to take the oars in our hands and row. Other times, we just need to unfurl our sails and catch the wind of God. But in either case, we need to be heading in the right direction. Fortunately, God has implanted in us a moral compass, our conscience, which lets us know whether we are on the right track or not. We should pay attention to what our moral compass is telling us, follow it with integrity, and row the oars or unfurl the sails, as the situation demands.

Poet Shane Koyczan will appear in Mission on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Clarke Foundation Theatre (33700 Prentis Ave.). An award-winning poet, author and performer, Koyczan gained global recognition when his influential, anti-bullying “To This Day Project” video went viral in 2013. His first published collection, Visiting Hours, was the only work of poetry selected by both The Guardian and The Globe and Mail for their Best Books of the Year (2005). Koyczan performed the piece We Are More at the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Koyczan is also the winner of the US Slam Poetry Championship and the Canadian Spoken Wo rd Olympics. Hemlock hires new head ski coach Rob Lahti, former ski racer and long-time coach, to take over Hemlock Ski Cub has announced that Rob Lahti has been hired as program director and head coach. He is a former ski racer and long-time ski racing coach in B.C. As a ski racer, he raced for eight years at the FIS level and competed for Canada on the World Cup circuit in Europe. His specialty was the downhill discipline, where he was once clocked in a race going 145 km/h. Mission inmate found deceased An inmate at the Mission Institution medium security unit has died. On Sept. 15, Sean Michael Nielsen was found unresponsive in his cell. Staff members immediately began performing CPR and emergency services were called. The inmate could not be resuscitated At the time of his death, Nielsen, 46, had been serving a sentence of five years for theft and robbery, since Dec. 22, 2014. The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of his death. As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the police and the coroner have been notified, and Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the incident.

School district receives $20,000 for apprenticeship program The Mission school district will receive $20,000 from the Industry Training Authority (ITA) for Secondary School Apprenticeship program support for the 2015/16 school year. The funds will support the district in placing students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 with local employ-

Judy Guido, a national speaker with the Inner Peace Movement of Canada, is giving talks in Mission on Monday, Sept. 28. It’s easy to push the needle to 100 klicks but frankly the higher speed take away from the visual delights displayed on both sides of the road. And as I slowed I put myself in the driver’s seat of the car behind, pulling to the side every time I spotted three cars in my mirror. The Cedar Falls Campground is a picturesque and tranquil woodland spot by Silver Star Mountain. The howling coyotes were a nice reminder that this is wilderness. A further reminder holding your iPhone in outstretched hand to get a signal from the camp Wi-Fi! We also had mobile Wi-Fi aboard, which worked well on the road. Day Four was a slow drive through the Okanagan Valley to Kaleden, taking in The Hatch Wines and Mission Hill Estate Winery in West Kelowna and enjoying a barrel tasting at Van Westen Vineyards in Naramata. Donned the plastic gloves and got on with it. It all went smoothly, so to speak. Keremeos opened the door to the Similkameen Valley and tempted us with the last of the summer fruit. It soon gave way to more rugged terrain leading to the generously equipped Princeton Municipal Campground. Day Six would see us climb and journey homebound along the Hope-Princeton Highway, past rushing streams that made mockery of the extended drought most of the province was enduring. GOODMAN Margaret Elizabeth Irva “Maggie”’ (nee Robertson) July 26, 1949 ~ Sept. 5, 2015

Maggie passed peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer early Saturday morning, September 5th in Chilliwack, BC. A loving daughter, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend Maggie is survived by her sister and best friend Vivian, children Angela, Danielle, Jacob and Martin, nieces Sara, Heather and April as well as a phenomenal array of extended family, friends and colleagues. Maggie worked for the BC Telephone Company for over 20 years and at Fabricland part time after her retirement. A creative soul, Maggie was an accomplished seamstress, painter, baton twirler and an avid gardener that loved to craft with her hands. A going away celebration will be held in her honour Sunday, September 20th at 1:00 pm. AAC Theatre & Community Arts Addition building, 2329 Crescent Way, Abbotsford, BC. KOKOSZKA, Bernard FRANK 1926 - 1915 Bernard FRANK Kokoszka of Mission, BC passed away on Sept. 15/15 at the age of 88. Born Oct. 7/26 in Poland to Adam & Anna Kokoszka, Frank immigrated with his parents to Canada and grew up on the family farm in Hatzic Prairie. Frank worked in construction and together with his wife Ruby (of 66 years) raised 8 children. Survived by his wife Ruby, daughters Linda (Claridge) and Shelley (Hammerstein), and sons Stan, Greg, Doug, Brent, & Neil. Predeceased by his parents Adam & Anna Kokoszka, sister Regina (Wallace), brother John, and son Ken. Funeral Service will be held Thurs. Sept. 24/15 at 10:30am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 32550 7th Ave. in Mission. Reception to follow at the church. Steve is predeceased by his wife Frieda, father Norman Jackson, mother and step father Mary & Bill Haynes, brother Terry and brother in law Bob McRae. He is survived by his children, Sandy (Lorelei), Dan (Lori) and Cindy (Danny); grandchildren Rob (Cailie & great granddaughter Cody), Meghan, Crystal, Dustin, Matt (Brittany), Brad & Brittany. His sisters Joan (Bob), Maida, Happy (Harold), brothers Keith (Meleeta) and Barry (Sherry) and sister in law Debbie as well as many other loving family and friends. Steve was born in New Westminster on April 28, 1937 and passed away in the early hours of September 13th, 2015 at Abby Regional Hospital. He was the second oldest of seven children and grew up in Aldergrove. He fell in love with wife Frieda at a young age and by age 26 had 3 young children. They lived their life together as a family in Langley and shortly after lost his beloved wife Frieda. Together with his family, he raised his kids in Langley and eventually making his way to Abbotsford.. Steve spent most of his life working as a professional truck driver and is fondly remembered by fellow drivers as a great teacher who taught them “all they know”. KASPER Isaac It is with deep sadness that the family of Isaac (Ike) F. Kasper, of Chilliwack, BC, announces that he passed away into the presence of our Heavenly Father on Sunday, September 13, 2015. Ike was born in Gull Lake, SK on March 21, 1932. During his earlier years, he worked in heavy construction and later took over the family Dairy Farm on Sumas Prairie. He then retired and moved to Chilliwack. Ike thoroughly loved traveling, hunting, ﬁshing and was an avid sports fan. Ike is predeceased by his sister, Sue; brother, John; and sonin-law, John. Ike is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sylvia; 3 children, Debbie (Spence) Henderson; Sandy (Gerald) Thiessen; and Doug (Carma) Kasper. He was the loving grandfather to 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He leaves to mourn his sister, Sarah, his brother, Bill (Donna), as well as many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Ron was a family man who adored his children and grandchildren. Ron had many dear friends and was always a pillar of strength and wisdom to all who needed him. Valerie A beloved sister, mother and grandmother, Valerie was born in Regina on May 16th, 1950 and raised in White Rock, BC with her two brothers, Lloyd and Jim Schuler. Valerie is survived by her two daughters and two granddaughters; Laura Dool, Dan Antall, Linda Gilbert, Dave Gilbert, Samantha Gilbert, Rebecca Gilbert as well as numerous friends. Valerie excelled running and managing her own foster homes for special needs individuals and was a coach for Special Olympics. After retirement, Valerie moved to Galliano Island and spent many years enjoying nature and living the life as an islander. She moved back to the mainland due to health issues. After a few years of battling ovarian, then liver cancer… Valerie passed away on Friday September 4th at Christine Morrison Hospice. The family would like to thank all the staff, volunteers, Dr. Quan and Dr. Shuel for all the special care they provided.

Duties will include hiring and supervising all Games staff, assisting volunteers to meet deadlines, assisting and monitoring various reporting systems and procedures, attending all required meetings, and other tasks as assigned by the Board. Brad Vis has previously worked as a communications advisor to Abbotsford MP Ed Fast, and most recently spent a year working for an agri-business developer. Vis lives in Abbotsford with his wife Kathleen.

Dennis Adamson

Dennis Adamson has worked as the Electoral Area B director for the Fraser Valley Regional District since 2008. He lives in Yale, serves on the board of a local charity aiming to help seniors live independently, and is married with two daughters.

Jati Sidhu

Topping the polls in 2011 was RANDY KAMP, receiving 28,803 votes, or 54 per cent of the total numer of ballots. He was followed by New Democract Craig Speirs, who received 18,835 votes, or 36 per cent of all ballots. In third was Mandeep Bhuller, a Liberal, with 2,739 votes and five per cent of the total. Green candidate Peter Tam got 2,626 votes, just under five per cent of the total. This year, Mission voters are in a newly adjusted riding that includes Mission, parts of Matsqui and the Fraser Canyon.

Jati Sidhu, an Abbotsford resident, currently runs a business development company. He holds a BA in political science and economics, and has served on the Abbotsford Police Board, the UFV Board of Governors, and the board of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce.

What exactly does our federal tax do for Mission? Highways, education and health care have all been loaded on to provincial responsibility, with some federal contribution. Canada Post is a corporation. Federal Department of Fisheries have little say over Fraser River resource management. Can there be federal grants to aid business development?

Stephen Harper has been the Prime Minister of Canada since 2006 and the leader of the Conservative Party since 2004. Born in Toronto, Harper moved to Alberta after high school – first to Edmonton, then to study economics at the University of Calgary. He has been MP of Calgary Southwest since 2002, originally with the Canadian Alliance party, and became the Leader of the Opposition in that year’s election.

Born in Ottawa while his father, Pierre Trudeau, was Prime Minister of Canada, Justin was raised in Montreal and is a graduate of both McGill University and UBC. Before entering politics, he worked as a French and math teacher in Vancouver. He won the riding of Papineau (Quebec) as a Liberal MP in 2008 – a position he still holds. He was named leader of the Liberal Party of Canada in 2013, succeeding Bob Rae.

Thomas Mulcair Age: 60

Leader, New Democratic Party

Mulcair was born in Ottawa in 1954 and raised in Quebec – in Hull and Laval – and graduated from Montreal’s McGill University in 1977. Mulcair was elected leader of the NDP in 2012, succeeding the late Jack Layton as the head of Canada’s Official Opposition. Mulcair has been the MP for Outremont (Quebec) since 2007.

Gilles Duceppe Age: 67

Leader, Bloc Quebecois

The oldest leader of Canada’s major federal political parties, Duceppe is also the longest-serving leader of the five – he led the Bloc from 1997 to 2011, then re-assumed leadership this year, replacing Mario Beaulieu. Duceppe also served as MP for Laurier–Sainte Marie from 1990 to 2011. He has not yet announced which riding he’ll run for in 2015.

Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party won its third consecutive federal election, this time increasing its seat count to 166 to grab a majority government. The NDP, under the late Jack Layton, surged into the official opposition’s chair with 103 seats – the largest total in the party’s history.
