Fresh twist on coffee could signal new trend Cold Draft Coffee is to coffee lovers, what craft beer is to beer drinkers Steven Heywood News staff
The expression, pour me a tall one, takes on a different meaning at Fresh Cup Coffee in Brentwood Bay. The coffee shop, owned by Jim Townley, introduced this summer what he calls a new wave in the caffeinated beverage – the Cold Draft Coffee. “It’s not a fad,” Townley says, “but a trend in coffee that’s here to stay.” Known as Nitro Coffee elsewhere, Townley chose to rename the beverage to fit more in line with what Canadians are used to – the draft beer effect. And in fact, the Cold Draft Coffee itself looks very much like a dark stout, complete with foamy head. However, it’s coffee. And Fresh Cup brews it their own way, chills it, kegs it with a gas that helps make it form that creamy head, and has it out in the café for customers to pull their own cup. “People are looking for new ways to recreate their favourite beverage,” Townley said, pointing out that in the Greater Victoria

On Monday, police asked the public for help locating Myrna Peterson after she went missing from her independent care home. That case has been concluded, police said.

Townley say, yes, different coffee shops compete with their own unique blends and roasts, but like the areas craft beer market, the more the merrier.
“We do a blend here specifically for this coffee,” Gelano says. “It’s double percolated and is made strong, and there is a honey drizzle added to it. “It’s like having a really strong, really sweet coffee – with not a lot of calories. It’s innovation in action.” Customers are given their own cups and pull the Cold Draft Coffee from a tap, an experience not unlike draft beer. Gelano says from the base drink, people have been experimenting with the beverage, adding flavours and more to make it uniquely their own. “This is no gimmick,” Townley points out. “It’s a functional evolution in coffee.” This summer, Townley says Fresh Cup went through three to four kegs a week, showing that the beverage is popular. He adds he’ll keep it fresh and ready for as long as demand is there. Cold Draft Coffee continues Fresh Cup’s coffee innovation, something they started around 15 years ago. Townley says they are looking to introduce a similar beverage, but made with green tea and lemonade. It’s something that’s still in the works and could be introduced as early as next spring or summer. As well, Townley is hinting at other new lines of coffee and roasting innovation yet to come. Those, however, he’s holding close to his chest.

Candidates running for Saanich-Gulf Islands in the Oct. 19 federal election had a chance to speak directly to voters at an allcandidates meeting, Sept. 14, at Parkland secondary school. Incumbent MP Elizabeth May, from the Green Party, was joined by the NDP’s Alicia Cormier, Liberal Tim Kane and Conservative Robert Boyd. Crowded into the gymnasium were residents from all over the Peninsula. “I want to see a Canada that’s able to lead by principle that (returns to its) core values and tries to set an example,”said North Saanich resident Kai Newman, a UVic student. Doug McKenzie, also of North Saanich, said he’s interested in ideas about changing how government works. “Why should a party leader have the right to declare that a candidate should run in this riding as opposed to someone that the riding would prefer to see?” Heather Tufts said she was there to see what issues were brought up.

Early Saturday, Matthew Friedlander will leave for Anacortes, Wash., from Sidney. But you won’t find him onboard the ferry. Instead, the Anacortes resident will travel by paddle board across the waters, taking the same route as the ferry and hoping to make an impression among the passengers and public. Friedlander estimates the paddle will take about 12 hours, He’s doing it to support Wings for Life, a foundation that conducts research on spinal cord injuries. Friedlander departs from 6:30 a.m., Sept. 19, and will be equipped with a marine radio

and his wife became involved with the charity after one of their friends suffered a broken neck. “It’s been a good way for me to get involved in the industry and it’s a way for me to help out too,” he said. After moving from Hawaii to Anacortes, Friedlander started a non-profit called SUP San Juans, which raises money by renting out paddle boards. According to the SUP San Juan website, about 25 per cent of all money raised is donated to Wings for Life. Last year, Friedlander said $1,000 was donated to the charity. Sitting at his desk penning a medical column a few years ago, Dr. W. Gifford-Jones had a heart attack. “It was not a good way to start the day,” Gifford-Jones said. “I damn near died.” Following surgery, his doctor prescribed cholesterol-lowering medication as the only way to avoid future heart attacks and possible death. But Gifford-Jones wasn’t convinced. His more than 37 years working as a medical journalist brought Gifford-Jones into contact with many controversial medical claims, including that of double Nobel Prize winning biochemist Dr. Linus Pauling, who believed that cardiovascular disease and heart attacks in particular are caused by a vitamin C deficiency. “Vitamin C is responsible for the manufacturing of collagen that holds

cardiovascular cells together,” Gifford-Jones said. “Lysine makes the glue that holds those coronary cells together stronger.” It sounded like an interesting theory to Gifford-Jones at the time, but he didn’t take it seriously until after his heart attack. “When it’s your life at stake, you give it a lot of thought,” Gifford-Jones said. “I thought I would take a risk and take vitamin C and lysine.” He is a graduate of the University of Toronto and Harvard Medical School. His weekly column is published in over 50 Canadian newspapers and reaches six million readers. Though he says 99.9 per cent of doctors would disagree with taking vitamin C and lysine instead of cholesterol-lowering medication to fight c ardiovascular d isease, Gifford-Jones stands by the theory because he says he’s seen the results. He, too, was skeptical until he met British doctor Sydney Bush, whose work indicates that vitamin C and lysine can reverse the damage done by cardiovascular disease. “Looking down through history, doctors indeed have closed minds and new ideas are very difficult t o get people to accept,” Gifford-Jones said. “I was skeptical, I thought it was too good to be true, but I hopped on a plane and went over to England, saw the before and after pictures and the proof was in the pictures.”

Technology gets us talking News earlier this week that Green Party of Canada leader Elizabeth May would use Twitter to participate, in real time, in yesterday’s federal leaders debate on the economy – an event she wasn’t invited to – got us thinking about how technology has drastically changed the way people communicate. Using various forms of social media for political reasons is only one way people have used these and other tools to reach the masses. We’ve seen charitable organizations undertake fundraising campaigns to tap into the multitudes of people online at any given time. In a similar vein, individuals raising money for all manner of ventures, both business and personal, have achieved success through crowdfunding. Both of those examples illustrate a broadening of the conversation around whatever cause for which the funds are being raised. From a news perspective, social media has given us a larger window on the world, as people post alternative-sourced stories rather than solely relying on our traditional outlets. On a more personal level, students overseas are easily able to take university level courses, thus participating in a global learning environment. We were struck this week at how China-based alumni from Royal Roads University, many of whom had never been to the Colwood campus, enjoyed faceto-face discussions with local grads during the school’s Global Alumni Weekend. This after engaging in mostly online learning scenarios with fellow team members in Greater Victoria and elsewhere on the continent. Drilling down further, people have been using such software as Facetime on iPhones, or Skype through their computers or phones – military families are frequent users – to bridge the miles. May’s example is the latest to show how technology has allowed us all to “crash the party” without even being there. What do you think? MLA wants to hear thoughts on LNG The following letter was sent on September 2 by MLA Gary Holman to all First Nations and local governments within this constituency regarding the Steelhead LNG proposal. As MLA for Saanich North and the Islands I’m writing to express my concerns and invite any comments you and your Council might have regarding the proposal for a floating LNG facility to be anchored at the Bamberton industrial site in the Saanich Inlet. As you know, the Bamberton site was recently acquired by the Malahat First Nation, who are partners in the LNG project. While I support the economic development aspirations of the Malahat Nation, the nature and scale of this project has implications for the region as a whole, including other First Nations. It is my understanding that there has been no prior consultation with nearby communities about the project, including first Nations on the peninsula who have occupied and been stewards of this area for millennia. A number of constituents have contacted my office about the project and several community leaders have made public statements. This project is one of approximately 20 LNG proposals in BC. It is not clear that world demand and supply conditions will support even one LNG proposal, and an environmental review process for the Steelhead project has not begun. However, there a number of very

serious safety and environmental concerns raised by the location of this particular proposal, which is near settlement areas and would impact one of the most unique and sensitive marine environments in Canada. As you know, local efforts have been ongoing for years to restore and better protect the Saanich Inlet, which has also been included in a proposed National Marine Conservation Area, an ini-
tiative I support. The southern gulf islands in one of the busiest waterways in BC for recreational and commercial traffic, including BC ferries. I want to take this opportunity to assure you and your Council that I will be actively engaged with any environmental review. Lori J. Ward, known in Greater Victoria as The Hifi Princess, is a well respected DJ, musician and entrepreneur producing many releases of her own, and she is back this Saturday to perform in Victoria at Capital Iron at 9 p.m. as part of Rifflandia . Now residing in San Francisco, Ward still manages to get back to her home roots in Central Saanich. “I was really excited when I got the email because I was from Victoria, grew up here, went away, came back and did events and took a hiatus and I really wanted to play there for a long time and so it’s just really nice to be asked,” she told the PNR. It was after an argument with her girlfriends downtown where Ward stumbled upon an after hours club on Store Street that sparked her interest in DJ’ing, as she heard a DJ playing funk. “I went to the bathroom and this guy was playing funk and people were dancing, it was coed and it was just like wow, I’d never seen anything like it.” From there, Ward began attending events and started DJ’ing, buying records and turn tables. She says it was all guy oriented at the time and that it was difficult in the beginning for girls because there was just none of them. “It was kind of tough at the beginning but I made my way through and then went to Europe,” she laughed. Jumping on a plane, she’s lived and performed in many places including Europe, Austria, London and New York City, performing to over one million in Berlin at the Love Parade event. With no planning and scheduling, doing everything entirely on her own, that’s the way Ward liked things. “I did it all myself. Everything. I’d run my own booking agency… I didn’t trust anyone, I didn’t trust anything creatively, I didn’t want anyone to have control of anything. I just knew that if I didn’t do it myself, I’m going to be waiting.”

And Ward didn’t wait. It was now or never and when she was young, her time was booked up with her passion. “I used to do it for my ego I think,” she laughed. “In high school when I started I was flying away to gigs on the weekend when my friends were going to shot gun beers at
Island View.” Now in her forties, Ward is taking a bit of a step back, reflecting on what is going on in her life and why she does what she does. “When I was younger I felt like you have less confidence as you get older even though you have way more clout. I had no clout at all but now it’s
like I have over 200 releases, I have my label (Flavourite Music), I’ve played all over the world but I think you just humble out after the years and kind of realize its not that big a deal … because it’s what I do.” Having around 70 to 80 tracks waiting to go out that she had stopped working on,
her own website, designing her own CD cover along with marketing and promoting with around 25 DJ’s on her roster that she managed, it’s been one big ride for Ward, but she wouldn’t have had it any other way. “It was a 20 hour day job 7 days a week but I loved it… Work is only work if you don’t have a passion for it.”

A roaring real estate market is expected to generate $200 million more than the province expected in property transfer tax this year, further pushing up housing costs in urban areas that are already beyond the reach of many people. Finance Minister Mike de Jong says he is working on new ways to reduce the burden of a tax that hits properties every time they are sold. That could include a higher rate for highpriced properties, as suggested by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson. He suggested it as a way of discourage property flipping in a city that sees bidding wars for all but the most costly homes. Since the tax was
brought in by former premier Bill Vander Zalm in 1987, its take has grown to more than $1 billion a year. Since its inception, it has charged one per cent on the first $200,000 of the home purchase price and two per cent on the rest, taking about $10,000 on the sale of a $600,000 home. De Jong said this week he is considering adding a third step for high-end properties, with revenues used to reduce the burden on middle-priced homes. Another option considered for next February’s budget is to raise the exemption for firsttime buyers, currently spared the tax up to $475,000. “How many first-time buyers are purchasing homes in excess of that is a question that deserves to be asked before we tout a fur-
ther reduction of that threshold,” de Jong said. Statistics Canada reports that Vancouver’s housing price index was up 1.6 per cent in July, compared
to the same month last year. Victoria’s index fell by 1.5 per cent. Premier Christy Clark said in February she wants to eliminate the property transfer tax in the long term, once

Peace Day Festival set for bandshell this Sunday Carlie Connolly News staff
This Sunday, Sept. 20, at the Sidney Bandshell for the first time, a Peace Day Festival will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for members of the community to come together and recognize issues related to peace. Hosted by FaithLink, there will be a variety of multi-faith speakers, a peace pole dedication, prayer flags, music and various activities for all age groups. Beginning in 1981, The United Nations declared Sept. 21 as World Day of Peace with The World Council of Churches supporting the actions of the U.N by encouraging A Day of Prayer for Peace. The organizers of the First Annual Peninsula Peace Festival, FaithLink are celebrating a World Day of Peace bringing many together to support the actions of the U.N. The Peace Pole dedication, crafted by Russ Hudson is on display today outside of the Sidney town office and will be dedicated at the festival as well. It displays the message and prayer ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth’ on its six sides in dif-
ferent languages which are in English, French, Hebrew, Arabic and Chinese. The pole will be made available to churches and organizations wanting it on display at events. Minister at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, David Drake who formed a sub group for the Festival, says the Peace Pole started out of a group in Japan in response to the bombs on Heroshima and Nagasaki. In over 200 countries, there are thousands of Peace Poles dedicated as monuments to peace. Aside from the pole, there will be more than 400 prayer flags for people to make and take home or have on display. The Tibetans believed that the various prayers and symbols on the flags are carried in the wind, spreading good will and compassion into all areas. There will also be music performed by the Mufaro Marimba Ensemble who are raising money for a school in Africa. With all of the violence in our world today, Drake says it’s about focussing on where peace starts, saying it starts inside
us all to develop this culture of peace. He also adds that peace extends to peace around family violence and how we pass it on in terms of aggression in our own lives, going back to family, domestic violence and even how we treat one another on the playground. “When we talk about peace its all of it, it’s not just about international conflict, it’s about remembering that peace is a pathway through life but you have to choose it.”

Harper pledges tax credit for seniors Break would translate into $300 less in annual tax

Prime Minister Stephen Harper sought to shore up Conservative support among older voters by promising a new tax break for single and widowed seniors if his government is re-elected. The $2,000 tax credit would translate into up to $300 a year in reduced income tax for nearly 1.6 million single seniors who have private pension income beyond CPP and OAP. Eligible seniors could combine it with the existing $2,000 pension income tax credit for a combined benefit of up to $600 a year. “It is an affordable commitment,” Harper said Tuesday in North Vancouver, noting it will be phased in over four years at an eventual annual cost of nearly $400 million. “It helps the seniors who need it most.” Both the NDP and Liberals have promised to increase the Guaranteed Income Supplement for lower income seniors. The Liberals say their proposed immediate 10 per cent hike to GIS payments would add up to an extra $920 a year for a low-income senior. The Conservatives have sought to portray Liberal and NDP promises as unaffordable and therefore unreliable. The Liberals and NDP have also pledged to scrap the Conservatives’ 2012 decision to make many future seniors wait an extra two years until age 67 before becoming eligible for OAP and GIS. That change is to be phased in starting in 2023. Both Opposition parties aim to expand CPP, drawing criticism from Harper that their approaches amount to hefty payroll tax hikes. The NDP and Liberals both would unwind another Harper government change they say benefits only the wealthy – the increased $10,000 contribution limit for Tax Free Savings Accounts. But both parties say they would preserve income splitting for seniors. Earlier in the week, NDP leader Tom Mulcair pledged to bolster health care transfers to the provinces with an extra $1.8 billion.

An awesome road trip through beautiful B.C. It’s hard to imagine a better way to experience Beautiful British Columbia than to tour its highways and byways in a fullyequipped recreation vehicle. Recently, yours truly took a six-day, 1,200-kilometre, road trip in an RV through some of the most spectacular scenery this province has to offer, thanks to the generosity of the promoters of the Snowbird RV Show starting September 24th, and the help of Destination BC and regional tourist associations. My job puts me behind the wheel of vehicles of all sizes and power, but I must admit to suffering some anxiety about safely steering the seven-metre long, almost 3.5-metre tall Adventurer 23RB RV over some challenging terrain. Perhaps the best preparation were the times I have driven large rental trucks during my children’s frequent moves! First stop was a short hour’s drive from Fraserway RV’s rental centre on Annacis Island to Klahanie Campground and RV Park at the stunning Shannon Falls, along Highway 99. Enough time to get an introduction to the vehicle’s size and manoeuvrability. With a Ford V10 gas engine under the hood, power was never a problem. Once docked by the

side of Howe Sound, I got the first real opportunity to survey the accommodation: a comfy double bed, fully equipped kitchen, dining table that folds to offer another bed, biffy with shower and yet another bed above the cab, bringing sleeping room for five. The start of Day Two found us enjoying the spectacular views from, the top of the new Sea to Sky Gondola. Time to head north through Squamish, Whistler and a 100-kilometre mountainous stretch that would hone my skills – the Duffey Lake Road from just beyond Pemberton to the gorgeous head of Seton Lake and on to Lillooet. It provides awesome scenery between steep inclines, tight switchbacks and narrow onelane bridges. The auto transmission’s tow
mode smoothed out the climbs, descents and need for hard braking. A stiff shot of single-malt whisky at the Pemberton Distillery prepared my drive partner for the breathtaking and scary views deep, down into the valley below. By the time we reached the 38-degree heat of the Fraser Cove Campground, by the river at Lillooet, I was ready for a chilled Riesling from the nearby Fort Berens winery. The air conditioning worked over time as we tucked into a warm salad – well, it was by the time it was served! Respect for fellow campers, prompted a click of the AC off switch after lights out. Day Three: Lillooet to Vernon features open highway and the chance to open up the throttle. It’s easy to push the needle to 100 klicks but frankly the higher speed take away from the visual delights displayed on both sides of the road. And as I slowed I put myself in the driver’s seat of the car behind, pulling to the side every time I spotted three cars in my mirror. The Cedar Falls Campground is a picturesque and tranquil woodland spot by Silver Star Mountain. The howling coyotes were a nice reminder that this is wilderness. A further reminder is holding your iPhone in
an outstretched hand to get a signal from the camp Wi-Fi! We also had mobile Wi-Fi aboard, which worked well on the road. Day Four was a slow drive through the Okanagan Valley to Kaleden, taking in The Hatch Wines and Mission Hill Estate Winery in West Kelowna and enjoying a barrel tasting at Van Westen Vineyards in Naramata.
The skies darkened with a mix of rain-filled clouds and smoke drifting up the valley from the wildfires around Oliver. A gale howled as we settled for the night at the Camp-Along Tent and Trailer Resort. Day Five: Time to empty the discreetly named black water tank. Donned the plastic gloves and got on with it.
It all went smoothly, so to speak. Keremeos opened the door to the Similkameen Valley and tempted us with the last of the summer fruit. It soon gave way to more rugged terrain leading to the generously equipped Princeton Municipal Campground. Day Six would see us climb and journey

Conservatives play up B.C.’s woes under NDP in 1990s Jeff Nagel Black Press
A leaked Conservative letter to B.C. business leaders is urging them to pull out the stops to fight a potential NDP federal election victory that it warns would devastate the province’s economy. “This election will be decided in B.C.,” said the letter from Industry Minister James Moore and former Conservative cabinet minister Stockwell Day. “We could end up with an NDP national government,” they said, predicting the result will be “higher taxes and a broken economy.” Although neither is a candidate in this election, the two Tories said they will take their message on the road and urged business leaders to work with them to convince voters to reelect the Harper government and reject the “dangerous policies” of the NDP. The letter also takes aim at Liberal leader Justin Trudeau’s plan to cancel LNG tax incentives. Liberals’ economy-first attacks against “risky” Adrian Dix that helped persuade voters to reject the NDP in the 2013 provincial election, despite an early polling lead for the New Democrats. Philip Hochstein, president of the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association of B.C., said he hopes the message resonates with voters. “I think the federal Conservatives are right to remind British Columbians about the lost decade of an NDP government,” he said, adding business leaders could be influential. “We have a history under the NDP, we know what it was like,” Hochstein said. “There was, in essence, a strike on capital – people stopped investing in British Columbia.”

Parking lot party on Sunday celebrates Hockeyville The Kraft Hockeyville Parking Lot Party is set for Sept. 20th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Panorama Recreation Centre. Residents are invited to bring family and friends and participate in road hockey games and races through an inflatable obstacle course. There will also be a raffle basket, 50/50 draw and food trucks on the site.
In April, Panorama Recreation was announced as the grand prize winner of Kraft Hockeyville 2015 and received $100,000 to fund arena improvements. The win also earned the right to host an NHL preseason game between the San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks, which will be played at The Q Centre in Colwood on Sept. 21.

As the summer winds down, skaters with the Peninsula Figure Skating Club are preparing for another busy season of training and competing. “Our junior, intermediate and senior skaters have already started their season and we’re looking forward to kicking off our CanSkate and Hockey Skills programs at the beginning of October,” said club president, Tina Henderson. The club had a strong 2014/15 season, said Henderson, with many medals brought home by junior, intermediate and senior skaters, a 100 percent test-pass rate and a dramatic increase in CanSkate registration. “We were very pleased with our season last year but it was only the beginning – we know this season is going to be even more exciting,” she said. The club’s head coach, Lorraine Hyne, says many skaters start

Losing a tooth you’d like to keep is generally to be avoided, and fortunately a lot of teeth can be saved. Teeth help us chew our food, speak, support our cheek and lips and facial structure, and of course are a part of those joyful moments in life every time we laugh or smile. When you lose a tooth you lose chewing power, jaw bone, and your bite can shift in hard to change ways. It’s best to replace a tooth soon after losing it. My last two articles (read on our website) discussed the two best options for replacing a missing tooth—a dental implant or bridge. Those options are more natural, longer lasting and stay in place. Let’s discuss a third alternative a partial denture. A partial denture is just what it sounds like— part of a denture. It replaces missing teeth by attaching to those you have left with clasps or hooks with false teeth. Given there are longer lasting more natural options why do people choose partial dentures? Short term cost. But long-term costs for a partial denture (without any adjusting for inflation) can total even
higher then a bridge or implant. Why is that? The answer is maintenance and collateral damage. When you lose teeth you also lose bone—a partial denture can accelerate that process. Eventually, the denture will become loose and it will need to either be replaced or relined etc. Additionally, because a partial hooks onto natural teeth to stay in place, we often see cavities or damage to the rest of your teeth and gums as a result. Each time any work in your mouth is done it must be retrofitted to the denture. There are speech changes to adapt to and another “thing” to remember and clean each day. This doesn’t sound very encouraging! Despite this, a partial denture can be a great short term solution. The greatest risk of a partial denture is the temptation to pull more teeth later on and simply add a tooth to the partial. It’s a slippery slope. You might think I don’t like partial dentures—and you would be partially right! Although I wouldn’t want one personally, I do think they can provide a valuable service when chosen, and in some instances make a lot of sense. Parksville and the Vancouver Island Regionals will take place Feb. 5 to 7 at the Juan De Fuca Rec Centre. Two more competitions, the Super Series STARSkate Final and the Super Series Vancouver Island will take place in March and April. “We’re looking forward to a busy and successful season,” said Hyne. – something HayterMenzies said he was always interested in. “I have always been interested in war history and war mascots,” he said, sitting in his bright living room with his rescue dog Freddy lying next to him (the book is dedicated to Freddy.) Hayter-Menzies’ biography of the fourlegged war hero is the first biography in almost ninety years of the Terrier named Rags who served with the First Division in France during the First World War. Rags was a stray, picked up in Paris on July 14, 1918 by two dough boys from the First Division. The two brought Rags back to camp, where he learned to run messages which saved the lives of hundreds of soldiers. He also assisted in Signal Corps repairs, alerted soldiers to incoming shells, and brought comfort to the Division in the last bloody battles of the Great War. “Not only does the book honour Rags, but it also honours all the other animals that have served in wars over the years,” explained Hayter-Menzies. From Stray Dog to World War I Hero covers Rags’ entire life story, from the bomb-filled years of war through his secret journey to the United States that began his second life, one just as filled with drama and heartache. In years of peace, Rags served as a reminder to human survivors of what held men together. “It’s different if a bomb lands on a human soldier than it is if a service animal is killed in action. But they should matter and be recognized for their contributions as well,” he said, adding that another book he is working on will examine the effort to save British war horses abandoned in Egypt after 1918. “My whole point in writing this book is to celebrate the generosity of animals. want to give, they want to love, and even if they’ve had bad experiences with humans they are almost always willing to trust again. We as humans stand to learn so much from them,” he said. Rags lived to be 20 years old and was buried with military honors at Aspin Hill Memorial Park in Silver Spring, Maryland; one of the oldest animal cemeteries in the U.S. Hayter-Menzies visited the cemetery in 2014 during his trip there to research Rags’ history. “I always like to find the families of the people I write about, and Rags was no different. It’s been almost 100 years since he served and the decedents of the family who took care of him are still honouring him. I found photos of Rags that have never before been published that will appear in my book as well as an imprint of his paw print,” he said. Hayter-Menzies said along with honouring service animals from past to present, he also hopes the book will encourage people to find out more about organizations that help with animals in wartorn countries.

Friends of Island View beach question validity of CRD data Continued from page 1
According to Austin, the CRD seemed to ignore one of its own consultant’s reports (the Fairbanks report) which would have called into question the veracity of even the nine species claimed to be at risk. “That report read, ‘the report of Fleshy Jaumea is suspect – there is no precise information confirming its presence at Island View Beach and there is little or no suitable habitat within the regional park’, and later said ‘American Glehnia is also known from adjacent lands but neither has been reported from Island View Beach Regional Park’,” said Austin. The FOIVB hold that, since the information provided by the CRD was not accurate, any public responses based upon that information holds no validity. “You can’t feed people
a lot of false information, then take their responses and say ‘this is what the people want’,” said Austin. Mike Walton, Senior Manager for Regional Parks, disagrees. He said the process followed by the CRD was well executed and completely valid. “We received 73 completed response forms (from the public) and 462 individual comments,” he said. “I have full confidence in the process to this point.” However, that confidence wasn’t shared by Central Saanich Council. In January, the CRD made a presentation to council that led to similar questions being raised about the scientific validity of some of the information. A council resolution at that time read, in part, “if the CRD is unable to provide references for the data provided that they commission a study by an independent firm regarding the
validity of the facts.” A listing of material was subsequently provided to Central Saanich, but that listing failed to reference subject matter to which it was related, provided no page numbers, and generally failed to meet an accepted standard for reference attribution. “Yes, we got that listing,” said Mayor Ryan Windsor, “but it really didn’t tell us much. And I don’t believe that they followed up on commissioning an independent study.” The resource listing provided by the CRD was “useless,” said Austin. “It would be like a student who submits a paper to a professor and, instead of footnoting, points at a stack of books saying ‘I found all my information in there’. They would fail; and so too should the CRD. It’s shameful.” A final attempt by the FOIVB to discover the source of information used by the
CRD came last month with the submission of a Freedom of Information request. The CRD responded with a bill for $1,165 tied to what the CRD claimed was a requirement for extracting over 1,600 pages of material. “We did not ask for a treatise on these species, only for the records that led to the listing of their so called species at risk,” said Austin. “This is again a deliberate attempt to prevent the facts from coming out.” Walton stands by the CRD’s position. “I’m confident of the process ... it’s been well explained and we’ve accounted for the information that was used.” For her part, Susan Brice, the chair of the CRD’s Regional Parks Committee, said that while some mistakes may have been made, “it is an ongoing process and I’ll ensure that we address the public to resolve concerns.”

Vancouver housing bubble benefits Peninsula properties, local realtors say Tim Collins News contributor
Last week, Canada’s Real Estate Association reported that benchmark prices for properties in Vancouver and Toronto have jumped significantly over the past year. Darcy McLeod, the president of the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board was quoted last month as saying that the average price for a single detached home in Greater Vancouver has jumped 20% to a record average of $1.47 million. And while prices for properties on the Peninsula have not seen the same sort of meteoric rise, the sale of high end properties may be benefitting from the boom in house prices across the straight, according to local real estate professionals. “I’ve seen a lot of buyers coming here from Vancouver,” said Mark Price of Mark Price Real Estate Group. “If you think about it, if you’re in the right situation, it can be a massive lifestyle upgrade. You can sell your property in Vancouver for several million dollars, bank half of that and buy an equivalent home here for a fraction of the cost. That sudden access to money -- money that was tied up in real estate -- is like suddenly getting a huge inheritance.” Michele Holmes, of Holmes Realty, agrees. “We’ve sold seven properties this year at over $2 million, and while they weren’t all to people from Vancouver, I can tell you that the level of interest from people from Vancouver has certainly jumped.”
Holmes said that what may be considered to be a high price here on the island may appear to be quite a bargain when one has just left an overheated market elsewhere. “If you’ve just sold a single detached home for $3 million, then an equivalent home at $1.5 million is considered to be a bargain ... and it is. This is a great place to live.” Holmes said not only Vancouverites are interested in higher end properties on the peninsula. “With the dip in the oil economy we’ve seen people from Calgary. And the market in Toronto is so uncertain that people there are cashing in and making the move to a more peaceful and affordable lifestyle.” Judy Gerrett, a realtor with DFH Real Estate said that we shouldn’t sell the beauty and lifestyle of the peninsula short. “Of course we’re seeing buyers who have benefitted from the housing price difference, but they are also coming here because it’s a beautiful place to live. Particularly if you’re close to retirement or if your career allows relocation ... why wouldn’t you move here ... especially if it comes with a windfall of cash from the sale of a home elsewhere?” Price shares that sentiment. “I’ve had people who have come from very busy, very diverse neighbourhoods in Toronto or Vancouver...and they are looking for a home with the strong British roots that they may have grown up with. The lifestyle here is different and the locale is gorgeous...it’s what they’re looking for.”
And Price agrees that it’s not only people from Vancouver and Toronto who are making that move for
those reasons. “I’ve shown homes to people from Halifax, Ottawa...all over the country, wanting to move
here,” he said. “With their prices high and ours at a very reasonable level, it’s going to keep happening.”
