TERRACE - Terrace city council is withholding a letter of support for pipeline developer TransCanada until after a meeting with the provincial government next week concerning a revenue sharing agreement with northern local governments. TransCanada official Dave Kmet told council he is trying to raise a message of support from municipalities to counter the controversial and negative press generated by protests and opposition to projects. Kmet highlighted the employment the activity of his company has brought to the area with environmental and other work over the last three years, but not-

ed that “to other places that are not in north central BC…the only thing you see is controversy.” He said support statements from communities helps the company make a more convincing case to investors for the billions needed to finance the work Kmet’s request was put on hold when councilor James Cordeiro moved that any such letter should first wait until northern local governments meet with provincial officials next week to press their case for a share of the taxation revenues that would flow to the province from liquefied natural gas and other developments. Cordeiro’s motion was supported by every councillor except Brian Downie. “We have not had any firm
commitment from the province on our request for the Northwest B.C. Resource Benefits Alliance. This is a strategic move to hold the province’s feet to the fire,” said mayor Carol Leclerc after the meeting. A revenue sharing agreement would bring a percentage of royalties from all industrial activity back to northern communities, and 21 municipalities and regional districts from Haida Gwaii to Vanderhoof have signed on under an umbrella organization called the Northwest B.C. Resource Benefits Alliance. Downie voted against the motion to hold off support of TransCanada’s projects, saying it sends mixed messages. “The motion contradicts positions this council has taken in
the past,” he said. “I don’t think that’s fair to the project or the citizens of Terrace to play politics with two projects as serious and significant as these projects are.” But councillor Stacey Tyers, who is also the chair of the Kitimat-Stikine regional district and the chair of the benefits alliance, said Downie was incorrect. “We have supported projects, and supported projects under the promise from the premier that our communities would see benefits from those projects, and by leaping ahead to writing letters of support before those commitments have come into place, that is doing our communities a disservice. We are here to represent our communities and our citizens, not independent projects,” she said.

Kitimat environmental group supports gas pipeline blockade By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
KITIMAT - In a release to media last week, Douglas Channel Watch say they support the Unis’tot’en First Nation’s right to not allow Northern Gateway or natural gas companies from accessing their lands. “The June 2014 Supreme Court of Canada decision, Tsilhqot’in Nation v. British Columbia, found that First Nations which have never signed a treaty have never relinquished traditional governance of their land or its resources, and therefore, has never adopted those of the Crown,” said Watch’s media release. “Before Bill C-51 the rules
of engagement between pipeline companies, First Nation protectors, sympathetic civilians, and the RCMP were clear because court orders or injunctions were required before arrests began. “After Bill C-51 the rules are vague at best, and untested. People can now be deemed terrorists because they may be interfering with the ‘economic or financial stability of Canada’, because they may be ‘interfering with critical infrastructure’, or that they might in the future.” The new designations under C-51, warn Douglas Channel Watch, would result in peaceful Unis’tot’en people and citizens to be detained without a warrant “and be held for up to a week

without any charges being laid.” Watch continues that, “DCW asks that Coastal GasLink Pipelines remove their complaint with the RCMP, coming as it does during a federal election and when winter snow will soon make any survey work nearly impossible until spring.” They further ask Indian Act Chief Councillors, hereditary chiefs and provincial and federal governments “to resolve outstanding land claims and treaties.” “Governments, First Nations, companies wishing to do business, and Canadians as a whole would benefit from a clear understanding and respect for each other’s defined rights and responsibilities.”

Fire guts a garage at Gossen By Margaret Speirs THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE -A couple lost 60plus years of items in a blaze that gutted their three-door garage in Gossen Sept. 9. A luxury car, business items and trophy hunting items were destroyed in the fire so hot that it was the heat and smoke that caused the damage, not the flames themselves, according to Thornhill fire chief Rick Boehm.
“It felt quite like an oven,” said Boehm. “It held all that heat.” The steel structure of the garage, which was about 65 feet long by 40 feet wide and about 20 feet high, was even damaged. “Steel doesn’t like being hot,” he said. “There was some visible structural steel bends and flexes that could be seen the next day.” The fire, reported by the homeowners after a family member was awakened by what sound-

ed like explosions at 3 a.m., isn’t suspicious and the cause may never be known due to the extreme heat, and extent of the damage, said Boehm. Rain was coming down heavily and witnesses saw steam and smoke coming from the cracks and seams in the building and flames coming from the upper roof vents, he added. They did the right thing by leaving the building’s doors and windows closed, said Boehm.

An outline of the proposed housing development at Kanata School.
Massive Rupert project planned By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - Residents of Prince Rupert had their first look at a massive multi-family residential development planned for the former Kanata School on Wednesday night, a project that could create up to 270 new housing units. The Bryton Group outlined their plans to create up to nine three-storey buildings on the site, each of which includes 30 two or three bedroom units, with 80 per cent of the units being two bedroom and 20 per cent being three bedrooms.. The units would be stratified and each unit sold individually. Stuart Ramsay of the Bryton Group said the company hopes to start construction this spring and is taking a phased development approach, meaning units would be built as needed. “We will likely do this in phases, but it is not LNG dependent. Of course LNG will play a role in the rate of development, but we will let the market dictate how quickly the property gets built,” he said. “It’s a model up from affordable housing, so it will be easy to step into the next phase of development. The site is surrounded by single family residential and so this just
makes sense for Prince Rupert.” While Ramsay said the market would dictate the sale price of the large units, it is expected units could cost between $250,000 and $300,000. Ramsay said they have already made plans to accommodate some of the concerns or requests made during the open house. “We haven’t had any negativity, but there has been concerns from the neighbours. But we are going to leave a 90-foot treed buffer there so [Crestview residents] won’t be looking at a three-storey development,” he said, noting the company also heard of the desire to have a fence to separate the development from the nearby residential area. “We have also had requests for park land, so we have talked to the city about donating a piece of land near the entry to the current Kanata School and we would put a park in place.” The Bryton Group also plans to create a new access road to the site directly from Fredrick Street to minimize traffic movement onto Crestview. Once ground is broken, it is expected to take up to eight months per building
for construction. The project is currently undergoing rezoning to permit residential development, a condition of the sale of the site.

Toastmasters looks to grow this year
Healthy help…
By Shaun Thomas
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - After being brought back to life last year, the Prince Rupert Toastmasters Club is hoping to build on the success of its return. The club’s meetings averaged approximately a dozen members in 2014/2015 and club president Rob Eby said he hopes to see even more people out on Tuesday evenings this year. “We revived the Prince Rupert chapter of Toastmasters International last year, and were excited to see attendance grow as newcomers discovered that a supportive environment—and plenty of practice—can improve presentation skills,” he said, noting there was visible improvement as the club progressed. “Many of our members who were initially very nervous about addressing even small groups are now regularly assuming leadership roles in the club and delivering off-the-cuff speeches.” The club resumed its regular meetings yesterday, with weekly gatherings scheduled for the common room of Northwest Community College every Tuesday from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The club is open to people of all experiences and backgrounds, something Eby said is evident in the club composition. “What we’re finding is that no matter what type of work you do, or whether you’re retired, skillful and confident public speaking is a universal advantage.” Community members with questions about the Toastmasters program or with interest in joining are urged to contact Michal Sluka, Vice-President of Public Relations for the Prince Rupert club. Michal’s email is msluka@royallepage.ca and his phone number is 250 600-4959.

TERRACE - Terrace’s Joe Pelletier tackling two half-marathons this fall to raise money for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. Recovering from a minor foot-tendon injury in August, he “wasn’t quite ready to do another marathon yet,” he said. He will race the Vancouver Rock N’ Roll half marathon on October 25. Three weeks later on November 25, he will race the Las Vegas Rock N’ Roll half marathon. With the races in Vancouver and Vegas, Pelletier says part of his reason is it’s “a good excuse to go on vacation.” But it is also to raise money for a good cause. In the past few years, he has raised $1,600 for the Michael J. Fox Foundation, and almost $1,900 for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. This year he runs for the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. His fundraising campaign kicked off with a $1,000 donation from Rio Tinto in Kitimat, and his goal is to raise $3,000. “I don’t have any personal connection [to the cause],” said Pelletier. “I wanted to do a
He only started five years ago, inspired by his friend and runner Richard Kriegl, who he bumped into five years ago after Richard had just finished a 19-kilometre run. Pelletier told Richard he wished he could do that, and Richard told him “you can!” “I started running that day,” Pelletier said. “Those words really are powerful words. It really inspired me.” Pelletier started running on Howe Creek “where no one could see,” and slowly graduated to local trail races and then marathons. In 2014, he decided to run for charities and “do some good with all this.”

PRINCE RUPERT - It’s probably the longest anyone has ever walked to end up at Nisga’a Hall in Prince Rupert. Brenda Osborne and a group of First Nations walkers made the trek from Norway House, Manitoba from Aug. 3 and arrived in Prince Rupert on Sept. 9. That’s 2,435 km of motor-less travel. On average, they walked anywhere from 80 – 140 km per day. And it was all in the name of missing and murdered Aboriginal men and women in Canada. The group was greeted with a lastminute feast, with food collected from various sources around the region, to feed the walkers and the community at Nisga’a Hall on Thursday evening. It was an emotional night as the gravity of what the walkers had achieved and what it meant for them dawned on the night’s participants. “Tonight we are here to pay respect and honour their huge accomplishment from the Tsimshian territory,” said the night’s emcee, Arnie Sankey. As the walkers sat at the head table with Prince Rupert Mayor Lee Brain facing the rest of the masses, the walk’s organizer Brenda Osborne spoke in hushed, but powerful tones. “Thank you for inviting us,” she began. “It is a very emotional night ... [Our walkers] have come from all over the place,” she said, pointing out some of her companions came from Red Lake, Ontario, Winnipeg, Manitoba and many places in between. They battled the country’s harsh summer climate, but also drivers who didn’t leave them enough space on the side of the road, despite large signs and flags indicating their presence. Two sustained injuries to the knee and ankle when trucks blew past and they fell from the blowback. Both needed crutches. “We do walks in Manitoba all the time, but this is the longest I’ve done,” said Osborne, who has lost two cousins, an aunt, an uncle and a daughter to

the ranks of the missing and murdered Aboriginal people in Canada. Mayor Brain offered his warmest sympathies to the group and shared his vision of a world where justice finds all those needing it, not just non-Aboriginals. “I’m happy to be welcoming you guys here today. I’m having a hard time finding some words here because for me, what the biggest tragedy is, and what we all know in our hearts, is if this was non-Aboriginal people who had been murdered for this many years, there would have been justice already. And here, we have to walk 4,000 kilometres every year just to get heard,” he said. “As awareness grows on the planet, I know in my heart there will be a shift for equality and that’s really what this is all about. We all share one Earth and we’re all here together. It doesn’t need to be like this anymore.” Tsimshian elder Murray Smith blessed the day and food. “I won’t forget the honour that’s bestowed upon me here to come and welcome you here,” he said to end the opening remarks.

Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Aurora LNG Project
Open House and Invitation to Comment Aurora LNG (Proponent) is proposing to construct and operate the Aurora LNG Project (proposed Project), a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility and marine terminal for the export of LNG. The proposed Project would be located on the southeast corner of Digby Island near Prince Rupert, BC. The proposed Project would export up to 24 million tonnes per annum of LNG. The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act and is also undergoing a substituted environmental assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The Proponent must obtain an environmental assessment certificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. However, prior to submission of an application (Application) for a certificate by the Proponent, the Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia (EAO) must first approve the Application Information Requirements. The Application Information Requirements will specify the studies to be conducted and the detailed information to be provided by the Proponent in its Application. The EAO has now received draft Application Information Requirements from the Proponent and invites comments on this draft. To provide information about the Application Information Requirements, EAO invites the public to attend an Open House. The Open House is scheduled as follows: at: North Coast Meeting & Convention Centre 240 – 1st Avenue West, Prince Rupert on: Wednesday, September 23, 2015 from: 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There are 30 days for the submission of comments by the public in relation to the draft Application Information Requirements. The comment period will begin on September 1, 2015 and end on October 1, 2015. All comments received during this comment period in relation to the Application Information Requirements will be considered.
The intention of seeking public comments is to ensure that all potential effects – environmental, economic, social, heritage and health – that might result from the proposed Project are identified for consideration as part of the assessment process. At this stage of the process, the primary intent is to receive feedback about the studies or information required for a comprehensive environmental assessment. After taking public comments into account, EAO will finalize the Application Information Requirements and issue them to the Proponent. EAO accepts public comments through the following ways: ONLINE FORM

Petronas safety audit raises red flags By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - A report by the Vancouver Sun raises questions about the safety record of Petronas, the parent company of Pacific NorthWest LNG. A 732-page internal audit conducted in 2013 found four problems on Petronas-owned oil and gas platforms that could have led to “catastrophic” events, resulting in “multiple fatalities”, “extensive damage” to the facility and “massive” harm to the environment. Included in the audit was the discovery of six pressure valves that were found to have been heavily corroded but had not been inspected in two decades and “systemic” problems related to staff competence and training. As well, the report
also points to a pipeline on Borneo Island being shut down following an explosion resulting from the pipeline being built on unstable soil. The company said it has invested $10 billion (US) into a program to “intensify and improve process safety and asset integrity” and is working very closely with the federal and provincial governments to ensure it meets the requirements of operating in Canada. In terms of the pipeline, Petronas noted that aspect of the project will be “designed, constructed and operated by an experienced major pipeline company”. However, the report is causing concern among officials here on the North Coast. North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice says the track record of
the company is something the public should have been made aware of well before the proposal reached this point. “Why wasn’t the public made aware of such concerns before the BC Liberal government signed a 25year deal with the company? Surely the BC Liberals would have known about this audit. The BC Liberals are either being dishonest with the B.C. public in order to get a deal, or irresponsible by not properly vetting the company,” she said. Rice said the revelations are particularly concerning given the recent project development agreement. “The Petronas agreement also allows the company to essentially write their own environmental regulations. If they show such disregard to safety, then how can we
trust them to properly protect the environment and the very sensitive salmon habitat in and around Flora Bank?” she asked. Incumbent Skeena – Bulkley Valley MP and NDP candidate Nathan Cullen said these revelations speak to the importance of adequate monitoring. “It is something the company is going to have to address, but to my mind it speaks to the importance of having proper oversight. You can’t just have the company police itself,” he said, noting he takes issue with the current environmental assessment process in the country. “The review policy in Canada has become a farce ... the people meant to police and regulate the company are often working for the company and that creates a huge conflict of interest.

Drug bust made By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - A significant supply of a powerful drug was seized by Prince Rupert RCMP in late August, a seizure that came following a request for assistance from Kitimat RCMP. Prince Rupert RCMP arrested 34-year-old Jeremiah Dylan Pilgrim and 26-year-old Caitlyn Ashley Nelson after receiving a call for assistance related to an alleged assault in Kitimat. As a result of the arrest, RCMP seized over 1,200 tablets containing heroin and Fentanyl. In addition to the drugs, over $12,000 in cash was also seized. Both Pilgrim and Nelson were charged with two counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and are scheduled to appear in court in Prince Rupert on Sept. 30. “Illicit drugs have a profound effect on all communities, including the North Coast and are not just a big city problem. There has been one death earlier this year in Prince Rupert believed to be related to a Fentanyl overdose as well as multiple non-fatal overdoses,” said Sgt. Jagdev “Dave” Uppal, noting Fentanyl is believed to be 100 times more potent than morphine.

Summer student trio carry flag for LNG Canada The LNG Canada office this past summer, like the two before it, has been fuller than usual. That’s because the company has continued its summer student employment program, with three young women carrying the banner for the Kitimatbased project. Tasia Payne, Paige Gould and Sarah Maitland are the three summer students who work hard to share information about the project locally, and to give a welcome hand to the LNG Canada team. Each of them discovered the job opening in a different way, but in all cases, the women knew it would provide valuable work experience. “Three summers ago, before the LNG Canada joint venture was formalized, I did a job search online and I discovered the job posting with Shell Canada,” says Payne about how she got involved. She said she did research on the project and believed she’d be interested in working for the company. Gould says she was looking for a job that would give her important work experience and found the summer student position thanks to help from friends and family. “The thing that surprised me the most is how much [LNG Canada] is involved in the community,” said Gould. Maitland explains she was first connected with LNG Canada through the Haisla Nation Council last year. She says it’s the safety culture within LNG Canada that stands out for her. “This summer what surprised me were all the safety precautions they have taken to ensure
that all their staff, whether in the office or in the field, know what’s going on,” she said. Gould says there is no such thing as a “typical day” at LNG Canada, and their work day can be tailored towards each student’s own areas of study. “We all have our tasks that need to be completed, but once those are done, we have the ability to learn and work within areas that have personal interest for us. For example, I am taking anthropology and biology at school so I had the opportunity to review the recovered archaeological data before heading out on site to see and learn about the environmental concerns and what LNG Canada is doing to mitigate them,” she explained. Payne adds that all the students have “similar yet slightly different responsibilities,” such as administration, minute taking at meetings and assisting community members looking for information. Preparing for events like the LNG Canada Golf Tournament in Kitimat, or the Canada Day Canstruction® event, also were big projects for the students. Payne says working for LNG Canada has been an “undeniably positive” experience that has opened the door to a potential future in the LNG industry. “Working for an LNG company in the future is definitely one of my goals,” she said. She’ll be pursuing an education in professional communications later this year, she added. Gould agrees that working for an LNG company as a career is something that would appeal to her as well, “as long as it was for a company that is responsible and respectful to the environment … a

requirement that I believe LNG Canada is fulfilling.” Maitland says she too sees opportunity in LNG and looks towards being a millwright or a welder. “And the LNG industry has a need for those trades,” she adds. Maitland found event planning to be one of the highlights of working for the company. She just concluded her role in assisting to organize the LNG Canada Golf Tournament. Gould and Payne both say the office environment and the local team have made working for the company a very positive experience. “I’m not sure I can pinpoint a favourite moment because there have been so many great opportunities over the past three years,” said Payne. Gould certainly agrees with that sentiment. “I enjoy the work environment and the team vibe all the employees support. Everyone is highly accommodating of other people’s interests and take everyone’s input seriously,” she said. “There is nothing better than working in an environment where you feel like you are valued.”

Paws for a Cause raises more than $7,100 for Rupert SPCA
By Kevin Campbell
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - There were plenty of dogs, but the only cats to be found were of the painted, human variety down at Mariner’s Park on Sunday. That’s OK though, as the Prince Rupert SPCA’s Paws for a Cause walk event went off without a hitch. Approximately 25 canine friends joined in on the annual walk to raise awareness for animal cruelty and help rescue animals across B.C. when they took off from the park towards Cow Bay at noon.
But man’s best friend wasn’t the only species having fun – there were activities such as face-painting, barbecued food and beverages, bowl-slurping, hot dog-bobbing and a doggy doo toss. Merchandise from the branch was sold on location and a few adoptable dogs took part in the walk as well. “There’s quite a few animals needing homes at the branch right now. We have a lot in foster homes right now as well, so they’ll be available to come for adoption shortly and all our animals can be viewed online at spca.bc.ca/adopt,” said

SPCA branch manager Jamey Morris. Topping $5,000 in funds for the third year in a row, the branch raised over $7,100 as of Monday morning, easily clearing their goal of $6,500, with more donations coming in early in the week. On Sunday, they were already 75 per cent of the way there. “Online, as of this morning, we had raised $4,900,” said Morris on Sunday. “It’s been really good. It seems like people are having fun and all the dogs are happy.” The canines got acquainted through their usual rear-sniffing protocols and there was a large selection of breeds and sizes to be found on Sunday. The BC SPCA responds to animal cruelty cases with education and constables issuing warrants to remove animals from dangerous or neglectful situations. The organization prepares reports for Crown Counsel, recommending formal charges of animal cruelty and is the only animal welfare agency with the mandate and authority to respond to animal cruelty complaints. Last year, the BC SPCA conducted 8,849 new animal cruelty investigations in the province.

David Lewis Burrows Aug. 24, 1945 to Sept. 12, 2015
David Lewis Burrows, also known as Hagar, aged 70, of Kitimat, BC, passed away after a long and courageous fight.
Say not in grief ‘he was no more’ but live in thankfulness that he was.
Dave was born in British Columbia and was a long time and proud resident of Kitimat and employee of Eurocan. He leaves behind his wife, Sharon Burrows, and children James Robertson (spouse, Judy) and Kimberley Robertson, granddaughter Alexis Robertson, Goddaughter Megan Striker, as well as his brothers, James Burrows and Rick Burrows (spouse Claire) and many nieces and nephews, including Billy and Shana (spouse Charlie) and Kristen. Dave is predeceased by his parents, Ethel and Daniel Burrows, and his faithful furry companion, Sammy. A final goodbye with only laugher and no tears (in accordance with Dave’s wishes) will be held at the Anglican Church, Kitimat, BC at 11am on Monday, September 21, 2015. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Cancer Agency, whose research, along with Dave’s will to live, extended his life beyond expectations, giving many more years of memories for us to cherish. The family would like to express their thanks to the caring staff of the Palliative Care department of the Kitimat General Hospital.

Canucks alumni to play at a game in Terrace By Jackie Lieuwen
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - Terrace hockey players will face off against a Canucks alumni team at the Terrace Sportsplex September 26. Canucks alumni will line up for a meet and greet at 4:30 p.m. and the puck drops at 7 p.m. Put on by the Terrace Peaks Gymnastics Club, the game is meant to raise money for improvements to the club’s facility adjoining the Thornhill Community Centre. The improvements list includes build-
ing new change rooms, men’s and women’s washrooms, and a new lobby and office area. “It should be a fun night,” said Terrace Peaks manager Keira Almas. Event coordinator Kasey Lewis says Peaks expect more than 1,000 people to attend and are hoping to raise $30,000 to $35,000 for the building. The game also provides a chance to honour a roster full of dedicated community-supporters. The Terrace players were nominated and selected by local coaches Steve Smyth and Bob
Park, chosen for their abilities and community involvement. “There were some very difficult choices to be made. A lot of people in Terrace are very giving of their time and resources in supporting the community,” said Smyth. “These players will not only provide an entertaining hockey game for the fans, but perhaps more importantly, these people help make Terrace a better place to live through their contributions in sponsorships and volunteer time.” On the local roster are goaltenders Tony
Pavao, Paul Gillis and Dave Scott with defencemen Larry Nordstrom, Trevor Gibson, Kevin Fletcher, Travis Lamming, Trevor Johnson and Darcy Mallett. Forwards are Shane DeJong, Mitch Shinde, Rob Bell, Russ Sparkes, Brent Webb, Colin Parr, Lazlo Ratkaj, Ryan Watson, Kelly Gingles and Chris Culp with Cory Killoran on standby. Tickets are available at All Seasons and the club is still looking for volunteers. Anyone interested can contact the gymnastics club at 250-6380447.

Anglers enjoy Kitimat derby’s 28th year By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
KITIMAT - The annual Fishing Derby continued its tradition of being an activity-packed day at the Visitor Information Centre at Heritage Park. With an assortment of activities, DJ music and barbecue there was no shortage of things for the family to do, as anglers poured in to weigh their big catch. This was the Derby’s 28th year. Hayden Calkins’s 12lbs 5 3/4oz coho earned him the largest fish in the Youth category. Linda Patterson stood tall in the Women’s category with her 12lbs, 11
3/4 oz catch. Daryle Bolton topped the Men’s with his 12lbs, 10 5/8oz coho. The list of recipients for youth grand prizes were Myles Pedro, Keaton Demelo, Brody Velho, Alexa Rigoni and Trevor Crosby. Adult grand prizes were awarded to Kevin Barry, Cheryl Gilbert, Duane Hanson, Wendy Kraft and Michael Luis. Lucky winners of shuttle bus rider prizes were Justin Lowes, Cliff Forster, Deanne McConnel, and Mike Ward. Finally, the winners of the scavenger hunt were Val Little, Darlene Gordychuk and Shannon Molloy.
PRINCE RUPERT Doug Kydd had played well on the first day of the Prince Rupert Duffers Tournament at the golf course on Saturday. But, he had no idea just how much he’d elevate his game on the greens on Sunday to close out the 2015 Duffers as overall champion. “I hadn’t got a clue. I went out there and all of a sudden, things started to happen,” said Kydd. The Rupertite finished day one of the Duffers having shot an 18-hole total of 81 – very respectable for a 13-handicap – but he blew away his competition and even surprised himself, with an astounding 75 on Sunday. “It was outstanding. That’s the best I’ve played in three years ... Playing off a 13-handicap, that gives me a net [Sunday score of] 62, which is just amazing,” said the victor. He ended the weekend with a 36hole net total of 130. The Duffers attracted 28 participants, but only three women took part in the summer season-ending tournament. Rose Holkestad, a 15-handicap, won the

Rose Holkestad won the ladies’ division of the Duffers’ tourney and Doug Kydd won the overall 2015 Duffer’s championship. women’s Duffers division with a 36-hole net score of 159. It’s the fourth Prince Rupert championship this year alone for Holkestad, as she won the His and Hers Tournament, the Ladies’ Jubilee and the Vic Marion Seniors’ Open earlier in 2015. The overall low gross champion was Brian Holkestad, who shot a 36-hole gross total of 153. The women’s overall low gross award went to Jean Eby, who shot an overall low gross of 220. “Something that I was doing that I don’t normally do that well, and I was really doing it
well today, was chipping and putting. I was hoping it wasn’t going to go away. I was really unbelievable at chipping and putting,” said Kydd. The course was damp – the usual for the Centennial Golf Course. “You’d hit the ball 200 yards in the air and that’s as far as it went. There was no roll. We’re all used to that now,” he added. “We got spoiled in the spring.” “A couple holes – on number 12 – that’s where I went wrong. The rain was coming down. I rushed my tee shot – I just wanted to get back under the umbrella and
pulled [my shot] right into the bush.” Moe Hays claimed the second low net award in the A Flight, Bob Hays won low gross and the A Flight low net champion was Teru Yamamoto. For the B Flight, Arnie Parnell took second low net, Howard Linn won low gross and Joe Thompson claimed the B Flight low net champion title. In the C Flight, second low net went to Fred Hainstock, low gross was awarded to Jim Rushton and the C Flight low net champion went to Byron Gordon.
