Scott Panattoni and friends hit the waters of Hahas Lake for a little Sunday driving.

It’s the fastest car on the water and the fastest boat on the road. Scott Panattoni’s amphicar could be seen last week floating on Hahas Lakes, near Kimberley. Panottoni’s grandfather bought one of the German produced amphicars new in 1964. The amphicars were in production from 1961 to 1967. U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson was said to enjoy surprising unsuspecting passengers by driving into the lake at his ranch shout-
ing about a brake malfunction. His grandfather had lived in Invermere and a year after buying the amphicar, he and Panottoni’s father were out on the lake and the wheel bearing failed. “You couldn’t get parts for them,” Panottoni said. “So he parked his for 15 years.” Panottoni’s grandfather bought the one he has now for parts around 1980, when Panottoni was 15. “The guy that owned the one that I have was an amphicar dealer and it came with a bunch of

spare parts, including the wheel bearing for my grandfather’s,” he said. “So he put the used wheel bearing in his and then he had this used amphicar sitting there, so I bought it when I was 16 and gave it to my dad as a birthday present.” His father left him the amphicar in his will. The amphicar model was known as the 770, which stood for the seven knots it could do in the water and the 70 mph it could achieve on the road. See page 3

Mayor Don McCormick is going to take a crack at a long-brewing issue at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) meeting in Vancouver next week. The issue is the ability to get clearance from the Ministry of Environment for use of former industrial lands. McCormick says there are several examples of this type of land in Kimberley; land that
could be used if it could clear the environment ministry. “We have the bench lands near the transfer station site,” McCormick said. “It’s a beautiful piece of property zoned commercial/residential/industrial. We can’t develop it because there is an underground stream that’s deemed contaminated. But whatever goes in there wouldn’t use the water. It would be all city services. See LAND, page 5

New this year: The Cranbrook 4-H Multi Club introduced Chicken Poop Bingo as a Fall Fair attraction.
Cranbrook 4-H launches season at Fall Fair Elijah Siewert
The Cranbrook 4-H Multi Club kicked off the season at the Fort Steele Fall Fair last weekend — a huge thank you to Trudy Larson and the Fall Fair Committee for welcoming us back again this year. We brought animals to the fair for a petting zoo, had a lemonade stand and new this year was Chicken Poop Bingo. We had some sheep and a heifer for people to see and touch, these are just a couple of the kinds of projects that our club offers. People had a lot of questions about the animals and we were able to share about our project animals and some of what we have learned
in 4H. My sheep Tiny loved the attention too. On display was our 2015/2016 small engine project as we have more projects to offer than just animals. People had fun climbing on the tractor and having their picture taken. The 4H club moto is ‘Learn to do by doing’ and being able to do things hands on is all a part of 4H. To raise funds for our next club year we sold ice cold glasses of fresh squeezed lemonade. Funds raised go towards purchasing project equipment, supplies and tools. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth and supported our club. Thanks also
to Save On Foods for donating some lemons and Culligan Water for the use of a water pump. Chicken Poop Bingo was a hit. What is chicken poop bingo? People were able to purchase a number on our grid board. Once all the tickets were sold, the chicken was released onto the board and people gathered to encourage the chicken to poop on their number. Congratulations to our 50/50 Chicken Poop Bingo winners! A fun time was had by all! Thank you so much to Fort Steele for allowing us to use some of their chickens. Want to learn more about
our 4-H club? If you are 6 to 21 years old come to our first meeting held Friday, October 16, 6:30pm at the Cranbrook Alliance Church. At this meeting project leaders will give more details about the project they will be leading this year. Projects we currently offer are beef, sheep, swine, small engine, foods and Cloverbuds. Throughout the year our club members will be involved in learning record keeping related to their project, public speaking, judging classes at Rally Day and more! Would-be global explorers, take note Rotary hosting student exchange information night Tuesday, Sept. 22
B a r ry Co u lt e r
There’s a great wide world awaiting for adventurous high school students to explore, and Cranbrook’s two Rotary Clubs are helping make that happen. Every year, Rotary International facilitates both longterm and short-term student exchanges around the globe. Both Cranbrook Rotary Club and Sunrise Rotary Club are hosting an information night Tuesday, Sept. 22, to promote those exchanges and get the ball rolling for interest-
ed students and parents. The information evening is at 7 p.m., at the Mount Baker Secondary School Library. Rotary Club member Kim Shatford said relevant information includes how much an exchange costs, what the expectations are for students going abroad, the difference between a short-term exchange (two to four weeks) and a long-term exchange (and entire school year). “Rotary facilitates these exchanges as a cultural exchange,” Shatford added. “Al-
though there is an expectation that a student would go to school while they’re away, the academic portion isn’t as much a focus as the cultural exchange is — learning a new language, experiencing a different culture, being an ambassador for Canada.” Partner countries include Bolivia, Brazil, Thailand, Japan, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand. “Each club will be sending
at least one, and possibly two out,” Shatford said. “Out of all the applicants there will be one or two selected to actually go.” For every student from Cranbrook that goes abroad, a student will come here from abroad. So any student interested in this adventure is invited to head down to MBSS library, Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. “If they have any inkling that they would like to do this, this is the information night,” Shatford said.

Distinguished visitors to Kimberley this week were the Honourable Frank Ross, C.M.G., M.C., Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia and Mrs. Ross. They are in the East Kootenay to attend the annual convention of B.C. school trustees being held this week in Cranbrook, and are guests at Cominco Guest House at Chapman Camp. As patron of the B.C. Committee of the R.C.A.C. Civilian Committee, the Lieutenant-Governor was greeted on his arrival Sunday by a guard of honour from 266 Kimberley Squadron, R.C.A.C. On Monday he inspected the parade of the local squadron of cadets and cadettes. He was ac-
companied by D. Inman, chairman of the B.C. committee of the R.C.A.C. Following the inspection, he extended congratulations to Cadet Barry Hagen who was one of two Kimberley cadets to gain his wings this year. Both he and Mr. Inman spoke highly of the squadron’s smart turn-out and congratulated both officers and N.C.O.’s. He then toured the quarters, met members of the Oddfellow and Rebekah Sponsoring Committee and presented a gift of $50, which as he requested, will be spent on giving the cadets and cadettes a party. On Tuesday morning the Lietenant-Governor and party made a surprise visit to the Chapman Camp school to chat with pupils and teachers. Later he addressed an assembly at the P.J. McKim Junior-Senior high school, first school in the province ever to be so honoured.

Just the Issues; election Facebook page BY BRIAN L AWRENCE Creston Valley Advance
Voters in the Kootenay-Columbia riding have another resource to help them make an informed decision in the Oct. 19 federal election, with a Facebook page created by the Creston Valley’s Robert Falconer offering a non-partisan look at the issues. “It started as something more for me than anyone else. I’ve been kind of frustrated with this election because there’s a lot of rhetoric and party lines,” said the 25-year-old, who has an undergraduate degree in medical anthropology from the University of Toronto. The page, Just the Issues: Kootenay-Columbia Elections 2015 at www.facebook.com/ kootenayelection, offers more than just neutral explanations by Falconer. All five Kootenay-Columbia candidates — Bill Green (Green), Don Johnston (Liberal),
Wayne Stetski (NDP), David Wilks (Conservative) and Christina Yahn (Libertarian) — have been invited to participate on the page. “I would be more than happy to explain them, but they can say where they stand,” he said. “They can say, ‘This is what I feel. This is how it will affect Kootenay-Columbia.’ … I’ve been very clear with the candidates that I’m not creating a debate forum.” The page’s followers are also invited to ask questions and post concerns about what interests them most. “The only way democracy can function in Canada is if people find something that does interest them and get involved,” Falconer said. “We have daycare, jobs, servicemen overseas — there’s something for everyone.” Falconer has a unique perspective on one issue. His father, David (most recently principal at Can-
yon-Lister Elementary School) was a Chilean political refugee with a Jewish background — and as a Canadian eligible for citizenship in Chile and Israel, he’s looked closely into Bill C-24, the most controversial topic that’s been discussed on his page. “I think people have been very surprised at how far-reaching it is,” he said. “I think people are concerned that if they’re eligible for other citizenship, it puts their own Canada citizenship in jeopardy.” The Syrian refugee crisis is another current topic that has created a lot of discussion on Just the Issues. The page’s followers have expressed their appreciation to Falconer for creating a forum to interact with the candidates and other voters. “It’s very much bringing Ottawa to the local level,” he said. “They really want to feel a local Kootenay person is representing
us.” And by helping voters to identify and explore the issues, it helps them become emotionally engaged — hopefully to the point where they get out and vote. “I don’t think peo-
ple fully appreciate what we have here in the democratic system,” he said. “Not voting, in a very real way, is the same as voting. You’re just letting someone else vote for you.”

News from the Kimberley Garden Club Splash park donation SUBMIT TED BY MARILEE QUIST
It must be fall! The leaves on our Virginia Creeper on our back fence and pine tree are turning red, and the Colchicums, commonly known as Autumn Crocus, are blooming. They have naturalized, increasing their numbers considerably since I first planted them, so they put on quite a show. We had a great time August 12th at our annual barbecue, again out at St. Mary’s Lake a few doors down from where last year’s barbecue was held. We had much better weather this year – it didn’t rain! We also had lovely dappled shade, and many members took advantage of the lakeside location to go wading in the shallow water. On September 9th, we toured our last two gardens of the season. Members came to my garden in Marysville and I received some good advice about my Yucca, which hasn’t bloomed for the last three years. The other garden was in Chapman Camp, where we had a very brief meeting – everyone was more interested in catching up with members they hadn’t seen for awhile. Both gardens had quite a few fall-blooming plants for everyone to admire – it’s always fun to discover that there is quite a wide variety of plants that are late-blooming and what they are. After a summer of touring
members’ gardens, it will seem a little strange to be back inside again until June next year. However, the indoor meetings are where we learn new gardening techniques and about new plants
Now is the time to plant garlic.
during the program or educational portion of our meetings, so we do look forward to this. We hope to have someone come and speak to us in October about drought and deer-resistant plants, something worth learning about, especially after this summer when it was so hot and we had watering restrictions. There are quite a number of plants that, once established, can survive on very little water. If you are interested in growing your own organic garlic for harvest next year, you will need to
plant it before the ground freezes this fall. It is easy to grow – just get some heads of garlic, preferably some grown locally or somewhere in BC, (I prefer Purple Russian), pull the cloves apart and plant them “pointy” side up about 2” deep. Cover them and mulch well. Mine usually start coming up in late March. These individual cloves will turn into lovely heads of garlic by August next year. There is a lot of good information on the internet about growing garlic – one good site is www.garlicfarm.ca. If you like cooking with garlic, it’s well worth the small amount of effort required to grow and harvest your own. The Garden Club meets the second Wednesday of the month. From October through May, we hold our meetings at Selkirk High School, starting at 7 pm in the Library. From June through September, we tour member gardens, and if necessary, hold a short business meeting in the second garden while we enjoy refreshments supplied by the hostess. We welcome anyone who would like to learn more about gardening in Kimberley, whether you are new to gardening or new to the Kimberley area. For more information on our meetings, call Nola at 250-4271948. Happy Gardening.

Real Persecution Rooted in Fear
O
n Monday this week, in Irving Texas, police arrested 14–year–old Ahmed Mohammed at school. Why? He brought a simple electronic clock he had built as an engineering project to school. Police escorted Ahmed out of school in handcuffs. Photos of his arrest show him wearing a NASA T–shirt and looking confused and afraid. The police took him into custody, and they explained that he would only say it was a clock. Because … well … it was only a clock. Now one might think that the police department or the school in Irving would take a look at the clock and hold a conversation with Ahmed’s engineering teacher, who had praised the project and quickly realize that they had made a terrible mistake. You know, something simple. Or you might think that the school would apologize to Ahmed and his parents for humiliating and torturing him, and that they might use this as one of those teachable moments to discuss racism and profiling. But they didn’t. Even after learning of this terrible mistake, the school suspended Ahmed for three days and sent a letter to parents suggesting that they were blameless in how they handled the matter. In the letter, the Principal hints that Ahmed was at fault for violating the Student Code of Conduct which apparently states that children must “specifically not bring items to school that are prohibited.” Like a clock built for engineering class. The Principal goes on to urge parents to ask their children to “immediately report any suspicious items and/or suspicious behavior.” This self–serving letter was sent out after the arrest had been exposed as a hor-
rible mistake. It is dreadful that there was no public apology by school officials. It is even more appalling that they would continue to urge this kind of racial profiling even after they knew about the harrowing ordeal they had forced on one of their students. Now here’s a persecution that it’s worth getting worked up about. Or maybe it’s better to say that this is a persecution that should bring us to ask in new ways what it might mean for us to love our neighbours as ourselves. You might ask why I’m Rev. Yme bringing this up. After all, it Woensdregt was Texas … and you know what Texans are like (rolling our eyeballs and spoken with a knowing smirk). But this isn’t happening just in Texas. It’s happening in Canada. In Ottawa. Our government has become expert in sowing fear among us in the wake of the Syrian refugee crisis. Both Prime Minister Harper and Minister of Defence Jason Kenney have told us that we can’t just allow them — yes “them” — into our country. We have to screen them carefully to make sure no terrorists come in. Now, I’m all in favour of being careful. I’m not so naïve as to believe that terrorists would not take advantage of an opportunity like this. But honestly, screen everyone? A 70– year–old woman? A 4–year–old child? Is this honestly a reason to slow down the process of providing sanctuary and help to people who are in such desperate straits that they will do anything to find a new life where justice and hope can be renewed in them? How can this happen, this tragic miscarriage of justice for Ahmed and this denial of hope to refugees? Where does this
kind of prejudice come from? Fear. And according to the Bible of Disney, the Book of Frozen, somewhere around chapter 22, we learn that the only force powerful enough to overcome the bitter destructiveness of fear is love. Some of us will have heard that same sentiment in another Bible, in the First letter of John, in chapter 4: “There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love casts out fear.” Because we have not loved, we have become a people of fear. And because we are a people of fear, we are becoming a people of hate. As St. Yoda has said, “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.” We have a problem. A deep problem. It is time for Christians to lead the way out. If we truly follow Jesus as we claim we do, then we must love all people, all creatures. The Golden Rule which Jesus gave us says that not only are we to avoid doing to others what we would not have done to ourselves. We are positively required to do for others what we would want done for ourselves. To go a little further, the Golden Rule is the single common element in all religions. Therefore it’s time for all people of faith to start acting faithfully in response to this imperative. It’s time for love. May our fear never again turn a young man’s day of celebration into a day of suffering and mourning. I’m sorry Ahmed, and all other people profiled because of race and colour. We need to do better. More heartbreak than Taylor Swift
Canucks fans have reason for optimism after disappointing end to 2014-15 Depending on who you talk to, the Vancouver Canucks are either going to exceed expectations and make the playoffs or crash and burn in the tankrace for Auston Matthews. There’s no middle ground with partisans. However, it’s easy to peer into a crystal ball and make a case for either scenario. Hailing from the Lower Mainland, I was born into Canucks fandom, and as such, have experienced more heartbreak than Taylor Swift because of it. Trevor I was eight years old in 1994, 25 years old in 2011 Crawley and I cried both times when the Canucks lost in the Stanley Cup finals. The organization is still reeling from the failed Cup run of 2011 in the sense that they gave up a lot of draft picks and sacrificed their immediate future to win. That’s one reason why they’ve had no young, early 20-something talent ready to crack the roster. Until recently. The club added former Calgary Flames first-rounder Sven Baertschi, along with Jared McCann, who was Anaheim’s first-round pick that Vancouver got in the Ryan Kesler trade last off-season. Additionally, players like Jake Virtanen, Hunter Shinkaruk, Brendan Gaunce and Cole Cassels have breathed some life into the prospect pipeline. They’ve shed some age in moving Kevin Bieksa and added some depth in Brandon Sutter, Brandon Prust and Matt Bartkowski. So with that as a preamble, here’s why the Canucks will make the playoffs this season: • Daniel and Henrik Sedin, along with Radim Vrbata and Alex Burrows will continue to produce goals and assists at an elite level despite being in their mid-30s; • Baertschi slots into a top-six role and thrives in his first full-time season in the NHL; • Bo Horvat avoids the sophomore slump and builds on the second half of a stellar rookie season he had with the club last year; • Frank Corrado graduates to the defensive corps and adjusts to the NHL game;
• Jake Virtanen makes the team and adds some much-needed sandpaper and offence; • Ryan Miller stands on his head; • Luca Sbisa sits in the press box. If it was one thing that exposed the Canucks in their first-round playoff loss to the Calgary Flames last year, it was their lack of speed and toughness. Micheal Ferland (or is that Ferklund?) single-handily terrorized Vancouver’s defence on the forecheck, while players like Sam ‘Did you know he’s only 18?’ Bennett, Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan skated circles around a sluggish Vancouver squad. Game Six was a throwback to the Alain Vigneault era, where Vancouver started strong with a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes and ran out of steam by the end of the third period to lose 7-4. Classic Canucks. As for why the Canucks will miss the playoffs, it’s pretty much the opposite of the aforementioned: • The Sedins can’t carry the team on their backs anymore; • Baertschi, Virtanen and Corrado struggle to adjust to the NHL level; • Sbisa plays; • Miller and Jacob Markstrom struggle in net; • Injuries. There are a lot of naysayers on the blogosphere surrounding the Canucks on the current roster makeup—specifically questioning GM Jim Benning on the acquisitions of Sutter, Prust and the contracts of Derek Dorsett and Sbisa—that feed the negative narrative for the upcoming season. However, in the post salary-cap world, young (and cheap) talent is becoming more and more important to competitive NHL teams. And the Canucks finally have some decent prospects to be just the pieces Vancouver may need to remain competitive in a brutal Pacific Division that is only getting better and better. Training camp will be in Prince George this weekend and it’ll be interesting to see which prospects battle their way onto the roster. Because there’s ample opportunity. Trevor Crawley is a reporter with the Cranbrook Daily Townsman.
For the second time in two weeks, the Lethbridge Hurricanes found a way to best the Kootenay Ice. The annual Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey Thunder Challenge got underway Thursday night as the Hurricanes slipped past the Ice by a 3-2 margin. A power-play goal from Brett Davis midway through the second period stood as the eventual game-winning tally. “I thought the effort was good, no complaint on it,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice, Thursday night. “Are there areas we need to be a little smarter? Yeah. You get the work ethic and then you have to add some intelligence into that to make it easier on yourself. But overall, I thought we competed pretty well.” The Ice jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, as Mario Grman sent a seeing-eye point shot through a maze of bodies before eventually finding the twine behind Hurricanes netminder Jayden Sittler. Shortly thereafter, Russian import Egor Babenko tied the game with a quick wrap from below the goal line to beat Ice starting goaltender Wyatt Hoflin and the two teams headed to the dressing rooms knotted 1-1 after 20 minutes. A pair of miscues in
the defensive zone allowed the Hurricanes to get in front during the second. Hurricanes forward Jaeger White was the first to capitalize on a turnover at the Ice blueline, snapping a hot shot past the glove of Hoflin for a 2-1 Lethbridge lead 6:45 in. Less than five minutes later with Ice defenceman Jason Wenzel serving an interference minor, Hurricanes forward Brett Davis parked himself in the slot before taking a pass from defenceman Brady Reagan and depositing a power-play tally behind Hoflin. Facing a two-goal deficit, it was a pair of sophomores -- defenceman Cale Fleury and forward Vince Loschiavo -- providing the energy as the Ice looked to mount a comeback Thursday night. “They’ve got to standout. They’ve got to be leaders. They’ve got to play the game properly,” Pierce said. “I thought Vinny -- this was probably his best game of the exhibition. Cale was very strong again, and he plays with so much confidence for a kid that age. “We need those guys to play older than what they are and sometimes that’s asking a lot, but it’s going to hopefully help them in their development moving forward.” With time winding
down in the second period, Fleury boosted his club before the break by throwing a thunderous body check at his own blue-line. Though a clean crunch as far as the officials were concerned, Hurricanes veteran defenceman Arvin Atwal took exception and confronted the 16-year-old. Next thing you know, Fleury’s gloves are off and he’s in the midst of his first WHL scrap. “It was a pretty big hit, so I kind of thought somebody was going to come after me,” said the 6-foot-1, 192-pound native of Calgary. “I’m not going to back down from that. I need to be physical this year. We’ve got a younger team and I’ve got a pretty good body to throw around.” With the third period underway and a 3-1 deficit still on the board for the Ice, defenceman Bryan Allbee found himself in the penalty box. On the ensuing penalty kill, Czech import Roman Dymacek picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone before bursting in two-on-one with 17-year-old Vince Loschiavo. “I got off the bench, came through our zone and saw the puck flying,” Loschiavo recalled. “Roman chipped it past the ‘D’ man. He’s fast and I knew he was going to blow by the other guy so I went hard to the net. He made it easy for me.” All that was left for - Tavin Grant 7 the native of Winnipeg Power plays was to deposit the puck Kootenay Ice past a helpless Sittler.1/6 Prince George Cougars The Hurricanes 0/5 adThree Stars: vantage was cut in half as N/A Loschiavo’s second of the pre-season made it a Attendance: 3-2(Toyota hockey game with N/A Centre - Kennew nearly 13 minutes remaining in regulation. Wild Battle at the Border: Part II Introducing the Red Deer College Queens and Kings University Eagles
For The Townsman
The Wild Battle at the Border tournament brings Canadian Collegiate Basketball to Cranbrook and the East Kootenay. “It is an exciting opportunity to bring a different level of basketball to our area. For young players who love the game, they get an oppor-tunity to see and meet some of the players at the next level,” said Alan Nutini, organizer of the event. This event is being hosted by the Mount Baker Wild Senior Girls Basketball Program and they will be raising money for the East Kootenay P.A.R.T.Y. Program. “We want to support local charities like P.A.R.T.Y. and we hope the community will come out and support this event and try something new,” said senior Hunter Burton. The
Wild Team members will be working hard to create an atmosphere of entertainment. Two teams that will be entertaining the crowds for the weekend event running Friday, Sept. 25 to Sunday Sept. 27 at Mount Baker Secondary are the Red Deer Queens and the Kings Eagles. Red Deer Queens The 2014-15 campaign for the Red Deer Queens brought changes and a year of growth. The team struggled in the South Division of the Alberta Collegiate Athletic Conference (ACAC). New head coach Ken King was brought into the program from an assistant coaching position with the Laurentian Voyageurs Men’s Basketball Program. “Ken is an ideal fit for this team, he is a young coach with a variety of basketball experience
and we look forward to what he will do,” Red Deer College athletic director Keith Hansen said. King is a native of Oshawa, Ontario and said even when playing he always knew he was interested in coaching. “I was always interested in coaching, I coached in high school and with club teams as well as with the Voyageurs,” King said. He doesn’t believe the shift from coaching men to coaching women will present concerns. “I’ve coached mostly guys, but have coached girls and feel success at the women’s level borders on what you see from the men. It melds together.” Kings University Eagles Kings University is located in Edmonton, Alta., and is a small non-denominational Christian school.

Kings has built a strong basketball tradition during its tenure in the ACAC. Kings head coach Dallas Wright enters his second year as head coach of the women’s basketball program. In his last year playing basketball at Concordia University, Wright was the captain of his team that earned a trip to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships. He hopes to bring the same level of success to the Kings women’s basketball program. Kings returns two veteran guards to their line up, including a fourth-year player, Amy Whitesell, who graduated high school at Lindsay Thurber Secondary in Whitecourt, Alta. Whitesell is a quick shooting guard that will certainly look to hit some deep three’s in “The Den at Mount Baker,” accord-
ing to Nutini. Also, fifth-year player, Vanessa Gulayets from Holy Trinity High School in Edmonton, led the Eagles with 13 points in last year’s opening victory over the Red Deer Queens. She will get an opportunity to repeat on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. when Kings hosts Red Deer for the first time in 2015-16. Elementary Cheer Zone “We want to see elementary students come out for free and cheer on their team,” Nutini said. “We hope to see students come out and enjoy this event. Having the young people there will bring real energy to the gym.” The WILD Mascot will be there to encourage fans of all ages. Cranbrook para-equestrian rider claims double gold Sarah Cummings rides West Bay to podium in Kentucky
For The Townsman
Sarah Cummings of Cranbrook recently competed for Canada’s Para-Equestrian Team at the North American Junior Young Rider Championships in Lexington, Ky. Cummings and her new partner West Bay performed their dressage tests in perfect harmony to place on top of the podium and collect two individual gold medals. Her first gold medal was won for the individual championship test, where the horse and rider follow a specific pattern with compulsory moves and are judged on precision, harmony, impulsion and obedience of the horse, and skill of the rider. The second gold medal was secured in freestyle dressage, where the rider choreographs their own pattern to music of their choice. The freestyle must include the compulsory moves, but also allows the rider freedom to choose their own creative maneuvers. In comparison, this

The fun doesn’t stop there, Cummings and her teammates climbed onto the podium to collect the silver medal for Team Canada. The teams were
judged by an international panel representing USA, Canada, Mexico, Germany and France. Canada’s team was marginally beat out by the USA team by a mere three per cent. The North American Young Riders was a highlight for Cummings this season and was a taste of what it could be like to ride at the 2016 Olympic
Games. In order to qualify for Canada’s Para-Olympic Team, Cummings must continue to compete in competitions across North America. This takes extreme dedication, hard work, passion, training, athleticism and funding.

Cummings continues pursuit of Paralympic Games
Cummings pushed forward and traveled with her horse West Bay to compete at two more show venues. The international experience that she gained riding for Team Canada shone through as she achieved personal-best scores at these qualifying national competitions. Cummings is overjoyed because, with these scores, she now sits sixth overall on Equine Canada’s list of eligible riders for the 2016 Olympic Games. There is no stopping this inspirational young lady. With her goal so close in sight she is ready to leap towards her next challenge. In order to move forward, Cummings and West Bay must travel and compete at the last Olympic qualifiers in Wellington, Fla., in January 2016. It’s all up to generating enough funds to turn her dream into reality. Cummings’ next fundraiser is Sept. 26. She is hosting a horse fun day at Wycliffe. This is a small horse show that will offer classes in both Western and English. Spectators are welcome to come out and enjoy a day of fun, as well as, support Cummings’ Olympic quest. Entry forms for competitors are available by contacting secummings.2010@gmail.com. Cummings wished to thank all her sponsorship to date. “I am so grateful to everyone that has helped me so far,” Cummings said. “Friends and family help me every day, but without the overwhelming generosity of the community and local businesses, none of this would have been possible for me. I look forward to partnering with more businesses to continue my success.” **

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar
ARIES (March 21-April 19) With the help of a friend, you’ll blaze through your day and start the weekend early. You will have a lot of reasons to be excited about the next few weeks. Plans could change if travel is involved or if someone from a distance is heading your way. Tonight: In the whirlwind of living. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Allow others to voice their convictions and choices. You might wonder why they are heading in a certain direction. Once you become more acquainted with these people, you will understand. Tonight: Let your hair down and help others do the same. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You will be looking forward to better interactions with an associate, but you might find certain facets of each other’s personalities to be annoying. If you aren’t careful, a conversation suddenly could turn hostile. Tonight: Become more of an observer.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Use your unusual resourcefulness to get to where you want to be. Not everything has to be a long-term goal. In fact, you are better off staying in the present. Be open to an unanticipated gesture from a dear loved one. You’ll be pleased with the results. Tonight: Be spontaneous. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Consider slowing the pace as much as you can. Spending quality time with a loved one might be perfect. Whatever you choose to do, you will enjoy yourself. You especially feed off times when you spend quality one-on one time with this person. Tonight: In the moment. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Be aware of an innate competitiveness and a desire to be in control. Issues could surround your home that will surprise you. Deal with them quickly, as you might not want any more hassles around you. A discussion with a family member is inevitable. Tonight: Make nice. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You could be over a problem
Tundra
and want to let it go. However, someone close to you still might want to discuss this matter. Money is involved. Be willing to say “no” to this person if it means you can avoid feeing pressured. Tonight: Avoid a combative friend! SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You could be very intense -- far more than you realize -- and might be evoking very strong responses, both negative and positive. Is that what you want? You have the power to make a change in this pattern, if you so choose. Tonight: Use care with spending. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You sense a change coming. You have certain matters that you need to deal with, which you might not want to discuss. You know that you must handle them. A heaviness seems to weigh on you at the present moment. Tonight: Nap first, then see if you have any energy left. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Zero in on what you want. Even with all the uproar happening, you’ll get through what you
need to. Use care with spending, as you could go overboard. Let go of certain financial patterns you have developed over the years. Tonight: Make it an early bed time, if need be. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Reach out to someone whom you greatly respect. The conversation you have could go from extreme caring to a flash of anger. Encourage the other party to not let negative feelings build. Encourage talking. You’ll need to do the same. Tonight: Out till the wee hours. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Be aware of how much you need to stay uninvolved when dealing with a particular loved one. Generally you are active and speak your mind, but not with this person. You might have difficulty holding back your opinions, but you will manage. Tonight: Go for unusual. BORN TODAY Author Ben Carson (1951), actress Greta Garbo (1905), actor Robert Blake (1933) ***

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My wife gave her ex (her son’s father) a key to our home without telling me. I found out when I got home and he was sitting in our living room surfing the Web on my laptop. My wife says she gave him the key so he can let himself in on the three nights a month he’s scheduled to pick up their son for dinner as part of the custody agreement. But he has been making a lot of unscheduled stops at our house -- to use the bathroom, have a snack, etc. I told my wife I don’t like this, but she said, “Don’t be selfish. It’s my home, too!” I spoke to this man politely and told him I don’t want him letting himself in, but he replied, “She says I can come over whenever I like.” Am I being unreasonable about this arrangement? I thought married people are supposed to agree on things like this. It’s almost as though I have to share my home with this man, and he’s not even a helpful guest. He’ll eat a generous amount of food out of the fridge and leave dirty dishes in the sink. Last week, he bought his son a videogame console and violent videogames, which my wife and I had previously agreed would not be allowed in our home. Father and son will spend time playing games in his room when the boy is supposed to be doing his homework, sometimes late at night. I know the guy needs time with his kid, but there’s no reason why he can’t take the boy out to eat, to a movie or to a museum. The ex never made much effort to see his son until we married. This is my first marriage, and I’ve never had any kids of my own, so I’m not entirely sure how to handle it. But I teach high school, and I’ve seen one long sad parade of kids whose parents don’t maintain authority. So, Annie, what is the verdict? Should he have a key or not? -- The Husband Dear Husband: Our vote is “not,” especially since he abuses the privilege. It may be her house, but it’s also yours. And while it’s nice to be welcoming to her son’s father, he should not have the run of your home, dropping in unexpectedly and keeping his son up all hours. This is not responsible parenting. It is indulgence. Dad needs to be as diligent a parent as Mom. He cannot be a “fun dad” and do things Mom would not otherwise allow. This does a disservice to the child. Please ask your wife to get into family counseling with you to work on this. Also look into the National Stepfamily Resource Center (stepfamilies.info). Dear Annie: This is for “Confused Family Member,” whose niece had a large wedding months after a civil ceremony. My daughter also married civilly two weeks prior to big wedding bash for legal reasons. Her husband was being deployed within the month and she needed power of attorney in order to purchase their new home and do other things. We did not announce it, so as not to confuse anyone. And she kept her maiden name. She is also in the service, and it saved a lot of paperwork. -- Tootles Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Jane was born on March 1, 1921 in Medicine Hat, Alberta. She had a sharp wit and was quick with a joke. Jane was involved for many years with the Kimberley Quilters Club and was an active member of the Pythian Sisters. She was well known for her open-armed welcomes, taking time to listen and was always ready to help. Jane enjoyed a good hand of crib and cross country skiing to exercise her mind and body. Jane is survived by her granddaughter Christel (Andre) Leonhardt, grandson Warren (Alison) Leonhardt, and her five great grandchildren Aaron, Ada, Astrid, Alex and Jack. She was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Muriel Power, her husband Grant McGregor (1997) and by her son Clifford Bruce Leonhardt (2004). A service for Jane will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com
