Tour
- On August 31, three members of Council took a tour of the Anthony Henday Water Treatment Plant, operated by the Mountain View Regional Water Services Commission, located west of Innisfail on the Red Deer River. The tour gave Council a good understanding of how municipal water is extracted from the Red Deer River, treated and then transported to member municipalities. The Anthony Henday plant uses ultra filtration membrane technology and was originally built in 1977 as a provincial water treatment plant. Today the plant supplies 11.5 million litres per day to a population of approximately 30,000. TOWN OF SYLVAN LAKE

Eckville shooting under investigation RCMP are investigating following a shooting in Eckville last week. Police say they were alerted to shots being fired at a house on the outskirts of town at just after 9 p.m. last
Wednesday (Sept. 2). Upon their arrival, they found two males seriously injured. The males were taken to hospital for treatment. STARS Air Ambulance

reported on Twitter shortly after 9 p.m. that one of its Edmonton-based units had been dispatched to a call in the Eckville area. The victims’ medical conditions weren’t known by press time, but according to RCMP Insp. Gibson Glavin, police were “not dealing with any potential homicide” related to the shooting. RCMP have advised that the public is not in any danger. Several investigational teams are looking into the incident. More information is expected to be released later this week. - NEWS STAFF

Event-filled summer wraps up in Sylvan Lake JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
This summer offered a wealth of exciting and memorable events that the community took part in and enjoyed. Some of these events included the Canada Day celebrations, the Summer Sensation Beach Music Festival, Slide the City, the outdoor Summer Cinema Series and the Midway, making Sylvan Lake the perfect place to be. Michelle Morrison, special events and program co-ordinator for the Town of Sylvan Lake’s Recreation and Culture department, said the events this summer were “awesome.” “There were so many fun events happening in town,” Morrison said. “It was such a great summer for this community with a lot of events happening; a lot of people came out and enjoyed the events.” Collaborations amongst the community, town and volunteers made the events run smoothly and everyone worked well together to make the events successful. She had heard nothing but positive feedback of how awesome all the different events were. “Lots of people came out with a lot of happy faces,” Morrison said. Extensive planning is involved beginning months in advance, with some events taking close to a year to plan, as ensuring event activities are safe for the community to enjoy is a must. “We really have to do a lot of pre-planning just to make sure they run smoothly and safely for

“It was such a great summer for this community with a lot of events happening; a lot of people came out and enjoyed the events.” Michelle Morrison the community and that they are a lot of fun,” Morrison said. Planning includes an application process, with larger events approved by Town Council and smaller events approved by the Community Services Committee; the process can be quick or very lengthy depending on the event size. “The summer music festival event took a lot of planning and the process to get that event was quite lengthy,” Morrison said. “For smaller events (like) community barbecues and all those types of events, you can get it approved a lot quicker.”
The community can now look forward to fall programs, some of which are starting up next week and others that begin at various times in the fall and run until Christmas. Some of the events include the Spooktacular Extravaganza, Breakfast with Santa, Santa Clause Parade, Yuletide Festival, Zombie Walk and the Terry Fox Run. Arts, dance, drama and hula hoop programs are also available and will begin next week. SUBDIVISION AND DEVELOPMENT APPEAL BOARD/ ASSESSMENT REVIEW BOARD The Lacombe County Subdivision and Development Appeal Board (SDAB), which is comprised of four members of the public-at-large and one alternate member, is a quasi-judicial board that hears appeals from the decisions of the County’s Development Authority and Subdivision Authority. The Lacombe County Assessment Review Board (ARB) is comprised of the SDAB members and hears and makes decisions on property assessment complaints. Members are required to successfully complete assessment review board training to maintain their eligibility as qualified assessment review board members. The SDAB/ARB will also hear appeals brought forward under the Weed Control Act as per Section 28(6) of the Act. Applicants should have an interest in 1) municipal planning and development, 2) property assessment, and 3) the administrative tribunal process SDAB and ARB meetings are held as required Appointments to these Boards are for the period of January 1, 2016 - December 31, 2016.

A new editor for the Sylvan Lake News was announced last week. Jenna Swan was appointed to the role following a three-year stint at the Red Deer Express, where she worked as a reporter and photographer covering issues and events throughout the entire Central Alberta region. She brings with her a strong background in social media, photography and feature writing, as well as a solid awareness of community news. “While I’ve covered a number of Sylvan Lake events in the past, I look forward to further exploring the community and its residents’ issues and concerns,” she said. “I’m excited to build upon the paper’s reputation as a go-to source for all that’s happening in the community.” Swan will replace outgoing editor Stuart Fullarton, who recently accepted a communications role with a nearby municipality. Fullarton’s departure comes after more than two-anda-half years spent at the paper. “My time with the Sylvan Lake News has been an extremely positive one, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to serve the paper as both a reporter and editor,” he said. “My employers, my co-workers and the many community members I interacted with on a daily basis have all been fantastic to work with.” As part of her new role, Swan will also assume editorial leadership of the Sylvan Lake News’s sister publication, the Eckville Echo.

Flexible learning could cut dropout rates CAM OULTON TROY MEDIA
Back-to-school season is upon us, again. Those of us who thrived in (or at least survived) our own educational experiences tend to wax nostalgic at this time of year. Whether you are a student, parent or a teacher, this time of year evokes feelings of excitement, hopefulness, anticipation, and perhaps, anxiety. I am no exception as I reflect on my educational journey and the gifts that it has provided me. I have been profoundly deaf since the age of three. As a deaf child, the best thing that happened to me was being included in regular classes at Scott Robertson School in Edmonton Public in the 1960s. I was invited in, even though I learned in a different way than my classmates. I learned with the aid of technology (in 1965!) through a large hearing aid bolted to my desk with a set of headphones that may have been salvaged from a
Second World War bomber. Flexible learning a 21st century reality Because I was included, I wanted to include others, so I became a special education teacher. In my opinion phasing out the 'Opportunity Room' — the room that isolated so many children with different learning needs — is one of the best things to happen in education. I am sure that every September each student thinks, “This year is going to be different, this is going to be my year.” While I hope this is true for all students, the dropout rate alone tells us otherwise. What can we do for 20 per cent of our young people who do not feel included and so drop out of school before graduation? The traditional image of education is still safely ensconced in the 1950s. Meanwhile, advanced digital technology and the diverse learning needs of today’s students are 21st century realities. When the two meet — that is, when most people
understand that apps and tablets are as much a part of modern learning as textbooks — more students will be engaged and feel included. More students will have the chance to be successful. As the associate superintendent at Alberta Distance Learning Centre (ADLC), I want to help make sure that the same inclusive philosophy that I benefited from is applied to the many barriers that still exist for children in education. What barriers? First, there are the ones of ability and prior accomplishment, both for those who would like to work ahead, and for those who need more time and support to understand. Second, there are barriers of physical distance, age and interfering work schedules for students who have already dropped out, but who still want to take another stab at completing their diplomas. And third, there may be significant barriers caused by dated parental expectations of what school ought to look like. We have a
generation of students which learns easily through digital media while living with parents whose personal experience demands the sight of a student bent over a book. Digital material can be a resource to make learning more effective. For example, learners can walk through a distant battlefield after learning from a textbook what happened on it. Together, software and the wired world provide the flexibility to enhance student potential beyond what we as parents and grandparents experienced. An example is an online version of Grade 9 Science. Some students use it to catch up, while others can get done early, and apply themselves to Grade 10 Science when they are ready, rather than when the semester system says it’s time. Consider the power of an online resource developed by ADLC called CSI Macbeth. It places the immortal stories in Shakespeare’s famous play within a modern justicesystem context so today’s
students can connect to it more easily. No child left behind Let me be clear that ADLC is only one source of ideas and programming in this new world of adapting school to individual needs. Many school districts have wholeheartedly embraced the potential of flexible learning under an Alberta Education framework that makes it a system-wide priority. This is a collaborative rather than a competitive effort for the benefit of Alberta students. But because we still leave 20 per cent of students behind, I want to encourage teachers, learners, parents — indeed all Albertans who have a stake in educational success — to recognize, value, and take advantage of our 21st century capabilities. Alleged cat killer sought by police Sylvan Lake RCMP are asking for the public’s help in finding the person or people responsible for the alleged attack on a cat that led to the feline’s death earlier this year. Sylvan Lake RCMP received a complaint on May 17 advising that a family cat had been found mutilated on a driveway in Eckville. At the time of its discovery, the cat was still alive, and was taken to a local veterinarian. Its injuries proved too severe, however, and it was later euthanized. Police say they were told by the veterinarian that the cat’s injuries were not inflicted by another animal, and instead
were the result of a knife or another sharp object. An investigation has been ongoing since the incident occurred, and police are now seeking the public’s assistance in the matter. Those with information are asked to contact the Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment at 403-887-3333. Tipsters may remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or by submitting a tip online at www.tipsubmit.com. Information provided to Crime Stoppers leading to an arrest could result in a cash reward.

Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to the following calls for service between Aug. 22 and 28: August 22 2:34 a.m. – A 911 call was received by RCMP of a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 11 at Range Road 282 in Red Deer County. A complainant advised that he was tracking his stolen Dodge truck when the driver of a Ford truck tried to run him off the road and ended up rolling into the ditch. The male then fled the rolled vehicle and entered into the stolen Dodge truck and fled to Red Deer. The vehicle was subsequently involved in a collision and was recovered by Blackfalds RCMP. The suspect had fled the scene. An investigation is continuing. 3:05 a.m. – Two males are facing charges in relation to an incident on 46 Street at 50 Avenue in Sylvan Lake. A group of five males was observed leaving a liquor establishment near the Sylvan Lake Medical Clinic whereby two of the males began to damage a parked vehicle. A 22-yearold male and a 26-year-old male, both of Red Deer, are charged with mischief under $5,000. 3:14 p.m. – A RCMP member on patrol on 46 Street in Sylvan Lake observed a vehicle on the side of the road with the passenger side door open. A check on the vehicle’s registered owner showed multiple warrants out of Red Deer for possession of stolen property; theft; and failing to attend court. A 26-year-old Red Deer male was arrested at the scene. 9:49 p.m. – A Sylvan Lake Community Peace
Officer notified RCMP of a possible impaired driver stopped on 47 Avenue just east of Ryders Ridge Boulevard in Sylvan Lake. RCMP questioned the male and a roadside screening device was utilized. A 29-year-old Innisfail male is charged with impaired driving and having a blood alcohol level over .08. August 23 1:18 a.m. – A 40-yearold male is facing charges in relation to a check by police on a storage facility in Sylvan Lake. RCMP on patrol along Industrial Drive observed two males inside the compound at a storage unit. The males were questioned and the accused was found to be in breach of two conditions of a court order. A 40-year-old male is charged with two counts of failing to comply with conditions of a recognizance. 12:09 p.m. – RCMP are investigating damage to a vehicle on Firdale Road in Sylvan Lake. The owner of a Ford truck advised that the locks on his vehicle were punched out and the ignition had also been damaged. A suspicious white Ford F350 was observed in the area at the time of the theft. 11:03 p.m. – A domestic dispute on Reynolds Road in Sylvan Lake has resulted in multiple charges against a 22-year-old Edmonton male. A male and female were drinking at a local restaurant and were walking back toward the carnival grounds when the female was assaulted. As a result, the male is charged with assault and five counts of failing to comply with a court order. August 24 7:31 a.m. – A resident on 45 Street Close in Sylvan Lake reported the attempted theft of a vehicle. The owner advised that sometime overnight, an unknown person attempted to break into his Ford F250. The ignition switch was ripped off and no further damage is reported. continued on page 9

continued from page 8 11:38 a.m. – A vehicle was damaged on Ross Close in Sylvan Lake. The vehicle’s window was smashed and the passenger lock was also damaged. Nothing was stolen. 1:57 p.m. – RCMP recovered an abandoned stolen vehicle on 50 Avenue in Sylvan Lake. A Ford Escape was located by Community Peace Officers who contacted RCMP. A short time later, a Dodge truck was reported stolen by a male also on 50 Avenue who was working in his yard when a suspect entered into his residence and stole his truck keys as well as some personal items. An investigation has resulted in multiple charges against a 33-year-old Red Deer female, including breaking and entering with intent; several counts of possession of property obtained by crime; theft of a truck; and several counts of failing to comply with a probation order. 11:39 p.m. – Two stolen trucks were recovered by RCMP after a complaint of suspicious vehicles in the Sylvan Lake industrial area. In an attempt to avoid
police, one of the vehicles crashed into a ditch at which time the driver fled on foot. He was arrested a short time later by police. The second stolen vehicle was located by police and the female driver arrested. Charged with possession of stolen property obtained by crime; possession of break-in instruments; and other offences is a 22-year-old male and a 26-year-old female out of Whitecourt. August 25 8:09 a.m. – A 28-yearold Eckville male is facing a charge of assault and failing to comply with a probation order in relation to a domestic dispute. RCMP attended 52 Avenue in Eckville after a 20-year-old female reported that she had been assaulted. The male was arrested after finally surrendering to police. Some weapons, including a .22 rifle, were seized at the scene. August 26 7:33 a.m. – A 911 call was received of a collision involving a cyclist in Sylvan Lake. RCMP attended 47 Street at 46 Avenue where a male was being attended to by EMS. The male appeared to be under the influence of several substances and was
transported to hospital. There was no confirmation that any other vehicle was involved in the incident. August 27 1:40 a.m. – A stolen vehicle was reported in the Woodland Crescent area of Sylvan Lake. A 911 call was

Community fundraiser brings in over $2,000 for MS Society A backyard bash-turnedhouse party over the weekend saw community members raise over $2,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Organizers estimate around 100 people came and went from the fundraiser, held Saturday night at a house in Westwood Lanes in Sylvan Lake. Flashback Freddy provided musical entertainment, while funds were collected through an on-site silent auction — proceeds from which will be donat-
ed to the MS Society’s Red Deer chapter. While inclement weather forced most of the originallyplanned outdoor party inside, event co-organizer Treena Mielke said she couldn’t have been happier with the outcome. “We were absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone — from those who helped organize and set up, to the people and businesses who donated money and items for the silent auction,” she said. “It
was a truly fantastic night for everyone involved.” The now-annual event holds special meaning for Mielke, whose husband and daughter both have multiple sclerosis. Seeing so many members of the community rallying together for the cause, she said, was “incredible.” “In spite of the weather, it was a huge success, and a really incredible night. An incident in a Red Deer County hamlet involving a man police described as “distraught” resulted in no harm to the public last week. RCMP last Thursday issued an advisory noting that an event concerning a “distraught man” was unfolding in Springbrook, a hamlet located about 25 minutes southeast of Sylvan Lake. A second advisory was issued later in the day, noting that the event had concluded with the “apparent self-inflicted death of one male.” Police say the incident involved only one person, and at the time assured that the public’s safety wouldn’t be at risk as long as police’s precautionary instructions were followed. Residents of the area were advised to remain inside for the duration of the incident, and asked
to stay away from a set area surrounding Tamarac Boulevard. In police’s latter advisory, and following the incident’s conclusion, police say area residents were told they could return to the area and traverse their properties freely. They were also thanked for their co-operation in the matter. “The co-operation of the residents of the neighbourhood and the media is greatly appreciated by the RCMP during this serious incident,” said Sgt. Whitney Benoit of the Blackfalds RCMP. Police say the death would be investigated by the Medical Examiner’s Office. - NEWS STAFF

Watershed Stewardship Society continuing its work to protect Sylvan Lake JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Efforts are consistently being taken to maintain and improve the overall health of the lake. The Sylvan Lake Watershed Stewardship Society (SLWSS) works hard to observe the lake to make sure it remains safe for lake users. The most important
thing is the quality of the water, said president of the SLWSS Graeme Strathdee. He said visitors come to Sylvan Lake and everybody in the watershed area enjoys being there because of the lake. The Alberta Lake Management Society (ALMS) is the official organization that is funded to send water samples to a chemistry lab to check the
composition plant nutrients and nitrogen and phosphorous chemistry. People living in the watershed also have an effect on the lake, as Strathdee said chloride has been slowly increasing in the lake over time, and he suspects it may be due to leaking off the land in the winter from the roads being salted. “Every year the lake gets
concentrated because the water evaporates,” Strathdee said. “We’re seeing chloride concentration increasing and it helps us to confirm that people are affecting the lake.” The Town of Sylvan Lake has been expanding with more people coming into the watershed area; this puts pressure on the lake access as there are land changes, which in the
end impact the watershed. “It’s the relationship between what happens on the land and the condition of the lake,” Strathdee said. More people would like to access the lake yearround, as in the summer, boats are seen on the lake, and in the winter, ice fishers enjoy fishing. But with so many people wanting lake access and with land use changes,
maintaining the quality of the lake water is not easy. “There aren’t that many good locations for improving recreational opportunities,” Strathdee said. The SLWSS will hold an annual general meeting Sept. 19 at the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library where they will report on everything they have done to maintain the health of the lake this year. The public is welcome to attend this meeting.

Red Deer County last week issued a notice reminding residents that mobile signs along major highways in the area will soon be prohibited. The County’s Planning and Development Services department says that, effective Oct. 5, all types of mobile signage will be disallowed along Highway 2, Highway 2A, Highway 11 and Highway 11A. The prohibition, according to a County media release, includes “all signs on licensed or unlicensed vehicles or trailers that are located on land adjacent to the highways for the purpose of advertising.” It excludes “landowners who are advertising products or services taking place on their land,” such as advertising hay for sale. Failure to remove such signs will see fines of $500, $1,000 and $5,000 incurred for first, second and third offences, respectively. Those who require clarification about the rules are asked to contact the County at 403-350-2170.

Lacombe County last week announced the release of an Agricultural Community Consultation discussion paper that will pave the way for the development of an Agricultural Plan in the County. The County recently undertook a process to consult community members in an attempt to gauge their agricultural needs. The results of those consultations are outlined in the paper. Input was gathered through a paper survey, a web survey and a town hall meeting, which saw 62 people —

Breast cancer baseball tournament to raise funds for foundation JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and to raise early awareness the annual baseball tournament Save 2nd Base will be held in Leslieville Sept. 11 to 13. This is the fourth year for the tournament, with this year’s tournament spanning three days, a change from previous years of the tournament lasting only one day. The teams are made up of men and women wearing pink who will play baseball in two diamonds this year. Tamara Lawrence is the woman behind the event. Her idea to host a baseball tournament to raise funds for breast cancer research was inspired by her desire to help her aunt who was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago. Now, four years later, she still works hard to make the event happen and has raised almost $18,000 all together in previous years. This money goes to the Alberta Cancer Foundation. In order to play in the tournament each team had to pay $300 and Lawrence said some teams were sponsored and other teams had each player chip in $30.
To help raise money for the foundation Lawrence said the raffle table will be there again this year. “We’re still doing a raffle table because that’s how we make all of our money,” Lawrence said. Besides raising money for a very worthy cause Lawrence said she wants everyone at the event to have fun. The event was held in Eckville for one day last year around the same time and $6,463 was raised. The event has grown in popularity as all 14 teams have all the players they need, with some teams playing year after year. For people wanting to play next year registrations can be made at this year’s event. What motivates Lawrence to keep up with the event is the fact that cancer is hereditary in her family and she has been faced with the risks of dealing with the illness herself. “It hits home for me,” Lawrence said. “It would be nice to have some more research.” Donations can still be made by contacting Tamara Lawrence by telephone at 403-373-1209 or by donating online at www.bustamove.ca.

Paintball is a fun and competitive outdoor activity that is played in a safe combat style.
“It gets the kids outside of the house and off the video games. We push that a lot with moms.” Branden Majeau This seasonal sport involves players forming teams and shooting opponents with balls of paint that explode on impact. The sport is both recreational and competitive with players in camouflaged gear and shooting with realistic-looking guns. There are also two teams from Sylvan Lake — the Warboys and Salt and Pepper — competing in the Canadian Professional Paintball League (CPPL). It is also a fun and interactive sport that anyone can play, serving as a fun form of exercise. “It gets the kids outside of the house and off the video games. We push that a
lot with moms,” said owner and operator of Sylvan Lake Paintball, Branden Majeau. “It’s outdoor entertainment.” The sport may look violent but Majeau said it is not, and is actually one of the safest sports in North America. “Statistically we have less injuries than golf and probably considerably less than hockey,” Majeau said. During paintball, players wear a safety certified mask to protect their eyes at all times with other specific rules in place to ensure safety. “You just want to protect the face, the rest of your body will take the impact no problem,” Majeau said. The paintball facility, located north of Sylvan Lake on Township Road 392, is a big tourist base, but also attracts a lot of local players from the nearby towns and Red Deer. Majeau said there are many loyal customers that play weekly, with some dropping in individually or in small groups who can then join a team and play a competitive game. “There’s between 25 and 65 guys for it every Wednesday and Sunday who just drop in,” Majeau said. “We can cram a lot of people at one time, mix in groups and everybody is flowing really well. There’s a good atmosphere and it’s laid back.” The facility is set up for young children to play as

well as there is low-impact safe paintball designed for the 10-to-12-year-old age group. Children play with a miniature paintball gun that shoots at a lower velocity and with smaller caliber paintballs, which Majeau said has been very popular. “It’s still a real paintball gun, it’s just smaller and the paintball has less bite,” he said. “So for concerned parents there’s less impact, less pain and it’s a great way to get into it.” continued on page 16

Paintball: ‘A rush to see the paint come at you’ continued from page 15 The allure of paintball may be the thrill of trying to hunt somebody, because he said you don’t get hit that much. Majeau explains that during a game you get hit once and when you have been shot you put your gun over your head and exit the course because you’re eliminated. “It is a rush to see the paint come at you and you’re running out of the way trying to hide and co-ordinate with your team trying to run somebody down or whatever it is,” Majeau said. To wrap up the season ‘GI JOE’ is being held Sept. 20, which is a big game that proved to be popular last year with just under 100 people participating. People pay a $50 entrance fee and get a team T-shirt with everyone going home with a prize. Majeau said a lot of guys dress up in their cosplay outfits and there is a prize for best costume. “You have everybody on site, it’s a blast, and we play predominantly in the trees,” Majeau said. Lions victorious in season opener JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
The Sylvan Lake Lions played their season’s first
football game against the Ponoka Broncs on Saturday afternoon in Ponoka and won a victorious 38-6. Winning this game was
great for the team as head coach Vic Sloboda said some of the players had never played a football game before.
He said it was a highlight to see all the players walking away from the game grinning from their win. This win is bittersweet as
even though the team won their first game, Sloboda said all their weaknesses were exposed. “There’s a lot of work the boys still need to do,” he said. “We enjoyed the win on the weekend but now we get back to work at practice.” Some of what the players need to work on is their blocking, running and knowing the plays better, Sloboda said. At the game Sloboda was glad that all the players who had showed up at practice had a chance to play on the field, which he said was exciting. “The best thing about the game to me was that everybody got to play,” Sloboda said. “I had a couple of them come to me and thank me for giving them a chance to play on the field, and that was incredibly rewarding.” Trying to get all the players onto the field is the goal, but sometimes some of the new players just aren’t ready to be on the field and may get injured. “If you go up against a really tough team, some of those guys don’t care who’s on the other side, they will just hurt them,” Sloboda said. This game proved to be
foundational with the players getting some game time and some field experience, and now Sloboda said he won’t be so afraid of his players being on the field. “It was good to play a team like Ponoka,” Sloboda said. “Everybody was on the field and everybody had a chance to play and do different stuff.” From playing against Ponoka, the Lions now know what they need to do, and this week they will be working at improving their skills. Sloboda has faith in his players and said they are good learners and now they have a game of reference to be coached on. “Now we can coach them and say, ‘this is what happened in the game, but this is where we need you to be,’ so let’s up our game here,” Sloboda said. Even though expectations are low right now, Sloboda wants every player to correct one mistake in practice this week to prepare for the next game. “I expect better results next week and I know they are going to give them,” Sloboda said. The next game will be Saturday, Sept. 12, at Great Chief Park in Red Deer at 1 p.m.

Wakeboarding season wraps up JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
The wakeboarding season wrapped up successfully with the provincial competitions held in Alix Aug. 29. Approximately 44 different participants from within Central Alberta competed in the three different competitions — wakeboard,
hydrofoil and wakeskate. Competitors from Sylvan Lake in wakeboard included Sol Wynnyk, fifth in beginner; Jonas Granberg, first; and Roy Spicer, fifth in men. Levi Wynnyk placed first in wakeboard outlaw and in wakeskate. The competitions went as planned, said event organizer and Water Ski and Wakeboard Alberta board
member Jeremy Howsam. He said there weren’t any issues and everything ran smoothly. “It was great, the weather was pretty good, it was a little windy but nothing too crazy,” he said. “We had a great boat from our sponsor, everybody that showed up helped out quite a bit and we had a ton of volunteers throughout the day.” To wind up the event, everyone enjoyed a barbecue put on by Sylvan Lake and many prizes were given out. The provincials have
been held at the Alix Lake for the past 12 years, and this year boat traffic was low, providing calm water for the competitors. “Alix is a much smaller lake and we don’t have to deal with wind or waves,” Howsam said. “Had we been on Sylvan Lake last weekend we probably would have gotten blown over.” He said the season has gone very well with holding competitions at five different stops and within a couple of months. In accomplishing everything that was planned this

The HJ Cody Lakers senior girls volleyball team was at Red Deer College on Sept. 4 and 5 in the first tournament of the year. The team is still in the building stage with them only having had one practice. The team brought with them girls from Grades 10, 11 and 12, with a lot of the girls having never played together before. They started the tournament out very strong with two convincing wins on the Friday night as they began to figure out each other’s playing styles. The first game was against West Central JV (Rocky Mountain House) with strong wins of 25-12 and 25-18. Then they came against Lacombe Composite JV winning the sets 25-17 and 25-22. Great start to the tournament. Saturday had the girls arriving at 7:15 a.m. for an 8 a.m. start against David Thompson (blue) with another convincing win at 25-13 and 25-21. Then, the last of the round-robin games was against Lindsay Thurber (Red Deer), who are a very strong team to which the girls lost
both sets 18-25 and 19-25, but played really strongly. The last game put the team in second place in their pool and into the top pool for playoffs. The opening game was against Ponoka, with a commanding win of 25-14 and 25-19, taking the team to the semi-finials against CACHS (Central Alberta Christian High School from Lacombe), whom they beat 25-14, and then a closer 25-21. After that win, that brought them to the final game in which they went up against the strong Thurber team again. They played two well-fought sets but lost both to Thurber 19-25 and 22-25, leaving them in second place overall in the tournament. Throughout the tournament the girls had some amazing digs and ups and some incredible hits. We look forward to a very strong season this year from the senior girls volleyball team. Their next game is a home game at HJ against Wetaskiwin.

There is even the possibility of adding another stop for competitions next season. “It’s slow baby steps, but we accomplished everything we set out to,” Howsam said. “It was a successful tour this year and we’re looking forward to next year.” To celebrate a successful season, a big awards banquet is planned for the first
weekend in November in Calgary for the whole association and all members are invited to attend. Howsam said this season’s competitions were well supported with a good following of people, which is appreciated. “It meant a lot to us to have everybody come out that did come out because they are supporting us as much as they can,” Howsam said. “Now we get to sit back and start planning the following year.”
