Urgent care a community priority The community’s pursuit of an urgent care facility has seen its fair share of ups and downs over the years, but through the fight, one fact has remained clear — that Sylvan Lakers aren’t going to rest until they receive better access to emergency health care. Earlier this year, news was received that funding would be provided for the sought-after facility, prompting community-wide celebrations as stakeholders began planning the next steps forward. With the election of a new provincial government, however, uncertainty once again prevailed, and the Sylvan Lake and Area Urgent Care Committee began contemplating ways of getting the issue back onto the table. The result — a highly successful golf fundraiser that brought in over $27,000 for the cause, proving urgent care was still at the fore of community members’ minds — where it remains today. Urgent care has since been identified by both members of Sylvan Lake Town Council and InnisfailSylvan Lake MLA Don MacIntyre as the community’s number-one lobbying priority. And Sylvan Lake isn’t alone in the fight. Along with the many individuals and businesses who have generously supported the cause, several municipalities surrounding Sylvan Lake — who stand to benefit from the existence of such a facility — are also backing the pursuit. But it is ongoing, and as such, it needs the community’s ongoing support. Visit sylvanlake.ca/urgentcare for updates, and find out how you can play your part. - NEWS STAFF

for the fundraising committee for the NexSource Centre, Amy Komarniski. The building of the Centre is critical to the community because it will serve as a facility for health, fitness and recreation. “It’s a landmark facility for Sylvan Lake and it’s by far the largest investment in infrastructure that we’ve had in a project like this to date,” Komarniski said. The facility will have skating, aquatics, curling, running tracks and a senior’s centre - all
of which are vital amenities to the Town. Many groups involved within these activities and sports will want to understand if and how the construction of the future facility will impact the current facility. “Understanding how the development of the facility will impact the usage this fall is no doubt a question that many community members have,” Komarniski said. To keep children entertained during the event a bouncy castle, crafts, face
painting and games will be set up. There will also be a hockey game involving firefighters and the RCMP versus children. “It’s about getting the community involved so they can see what will be available at that facility when it’s opened,” Komarniski said. The event will be hosted at the Multiplex Sept. 19, starting at 1 p.m. with Town councillors and Mayor Sean McIntyre also in attendance. reporter@sylvanlakenews.com

Free courses being offered to assist parents BY JENNA SWAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Some say parenting is the hardest job in the world. Thankfully the Sylvan Lake Parent Support & Resource Centre is here to help as the Centre will launch a number of free group programs this September. Leanne Lyon, parent resource support worker at the Centre explained the programs aim to offer tips and strategies for parents to add to their ‘tool kits’. “I think a lot of parents work full time, there are also people raising children on their own without the help of a spouse or family,” said Lyon during an interview with Sylvan Lake News. “It’s nice to have people to call or talk to about certain stages of development or a place to get various tips and strategies.” While Lyon and the Centre have been offering one-onone parenting sessions since as early as January 2015 this will be the first time they have offered group programming. Parent support education sessions include Active Parenting 1, 2, 3, 4, Active Parenting Stepfamilies, Navigating Motherhood, and Newcomers to Sylvan Lake and Area. Lyon explained Active Parenting 1, 2, 3, 4 will delve into
the work done by Dr. Michael Popkin, a family and child therapist out of Atlanta. “He describes active parenting as supporting the growth and development of children and providing them with ways to survive and thrive in a democratic society,” said Lyon. “But the key message there is protecting and preparing your children in a way that will allow them to survive and thrive in the real world while still being a good parent.” Active Parenting Stepfamilies hopes to address concerns parents face when parenting in a blended family. “When you are parenting in a step family it can be very difficult - if you are trying to parent children that aren’t yours by birth and there are other parents involved it can be very tricky, “You need to understand what the boundaries are for yourself, the other parents involved, as well as for the child, and also what the expectations are for both yourself and for the parent you’re not living with.” Navigating Motherhood is designed to support and guide mothers through daily challenges and concerns ranging from various topics such as postpartum depression and anxiety to relationships and self care. Newcomers to Sylvan Lake and Area will offer a venue for those who have just moved to the town a chance to get

to know the area while meeting other newcomers. Lyon hopes it will offer a venue for newcomers to share and learn together. All sessions and programs are free of charge with child care offered and sponsored by the Parent Link Centre for children ages 0-5. Start dates for the sessions are as follows: Active Parenting: September 22 Active Parenting Stepfamilies: September 23 Navigating Motherhood: September 17 Newcomers to Sylvan Lake and Area: September 22 Register for the free courses by calling Kim Olsen & Leanne Lyon at 403 887 1137 ext. 226. editor@sylvanlakenews.com

Since starting at the Sylvan Lake News I have had much to learn - not only about the town, but also my new role as editor. These lessons have been a been a welcomed attribute to the many skills I have and will learn in my journalism career. Of the many ideas, concepts and skills I have learned over the years and
perhaps the most important of them would be the impact of community journalism as well as the impact a local newspaper can have. Not only are newspapers a resource for myself and other journalists to spread ideas and share community information, they are also an important tool for opening lines of conversation in the community to provide a way for individuals to have their voices heard. As editor of Sylvan Lake News, I hope to do just that. For long time readers of the paper you may notice slight changes within the

B e f ore the advent of motor cars on Sylvan Lake’s streets and roads, several hitching rails like this one (1) in front of Grimson’s Hardware in 1913, were in use. Single horses and teams would be tied to the hitching rails while the owners did their business. For longer stays, the horses were stabled at the local livery barn. Both these items were very necessary as long as horses were in use around the village. In the 1930’s, many homesteaders on the prairie, like the Kleeberger family (2), were forced to pack up and look for a better climate. Loading all their possessions and chasing the livestock, they set off from the dried-out plains of Saskatchewan westward seeking a better location. Mrs. Kleeberger baked bread, churned butter and tended the daily household chores while the men had their own work, keeping the wagons on the move, tending the livestock and keeping everything in shape as they travelled. What an adventure it must have been!
After the Calgary-Edmonton rai line was completed in 1891, rail immigration increased im immensely. Red Deer had a im Land La Office where the settlers could file for a homestead and a Settlement House fo where they and their family could stay w while w making arrangements to go the last la leg of their journey. These arrangements m almost always included horses, either e their own or a hired team. The farmers almost always shipped their f livestock and machinery with them. They soon loaded all their belongings, much like the Kleeberger family’s wagon train, and set off to their new homesteads. Not N only l would they need the horses for transportation, but also for all the heavy work as well as business trips, social occasions and for children going to school. Unfortunately, many settlers around Sylvan Lake were forced to use oxen after many of the horses contracted ‘swamp fever’ one summer. The Sylvan Lake mail arrived byy horseback via the Burnt Lake Postt Office until the rail companiess completed the tracks through town in 1912. Even after the mail started arriving on the train, horses were required to pick up the mail bags at the station and deliver them to the Post Office. This work was done by dray wagons which hauled coal, cream and butter and anything needing delivery. For a few years, the milkman also used a horse and covered wagon for his daily deliveries. A few enterprising women
filled their buggies with eggs, vegetables or home-made bread and peddled them in the cottage area. The Business Men’s Association was formed in 1925, and by way of advertising ‘The Beauty Spot of Alberta’, Harvey and Dave Jamieson constructed a float in the form of a boat on Harvey’s car for the 1925 Regatta parade (3). He also drove it that year in the Calgary Stampede parade and the next year in the Edmonton one. Horses have always been an attraction at the lake and in the 1940’s Bill Sharpe had horses for people to ride for the usual fee of $0.25. There was also a merry-go-round powered by ponies on the beach for several years. We don’t see them on the beach today but there are pony clubs, 4-H horse clubs and several stables in our area. Many farms still have working horses and rodeos are still very popular.

Comic contest aimed at furthering literacy in youth JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
On a set of four selected tires from September 8 October 17, 2015. See in-store for details. For all your mechanical needs
For youth who love drawing comics, the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library is hosting a comic strip contest. The contest has been well received by the community said the Library’s programmer Corrie Brown. She said she has seen children approaching the comic strip contest promotional material stands with interest. “It’s a way to promote literacy and we’re always promoting literacy,” Brown said. Even though the stories in comics are told through pictures with little attention given to words - the expres-
sions, scenery and artistry still provide a complete story said Brown. “It teachers you how to plan a story because it’s very similar to writing a story,” she said. “You have the beginning the middle and the end, characters, a plot and it just combines writing with art.” For the youth who want to enter their comic drawings they can pick up an entry form from the library or download it off the website at http://www.prl.ab.ca/ comic_contest. Youth ages 10 to 18 can enter as many comics as they desire until Sept. 25, with those drawings needing to be appropriate for community viewing. reporter@sylvanlakenews.com

Community welcomes new Sobeys owners JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
“A lot of times you spend more time with the people here working at the store
Sobeys is off to a fresh start with new owners Andrea and Brad Bromley who took over the store Aug. 9. The married couple who co-own and co-operate the store are thrilled to be working within the community of Sylvan Lake. Both are from Leduc, and have previous experience in owning and operating a business. After franchising a store in British Columbia for nearly three years, the couple came back home to Alberta to be closer to family and pursue their passion of owning and operating a quality grocery store. “We knew it was a very young, vibrant community with a lot of young families and we felt it would be a good fit for us too,” said Andrea. Being the new owners of the store, the couple say it is going well and it is very busy. There are over 100 staff members employed to serve the thousands of customers who shop there every week. The large volume of staff members and shoppers doesn’t worry the couple as they say they are both very people oriented. “It has been exciting meeting lots of new people,” Brad said. “It takes time to get to know our staff not just as our employees but as people too.” Brad and Andrea are very hands on helping out on the floor, ready to help their valued employees and customers.
than you do your own family,” Andrea said. “But if you can create
that atmosphere then people are going to want to work here and stay here
which benefits the store, ourselves, the community, the employees, and it’s just a
good situation,” added Brad. reporter@sylvanlakenews.com

Fire prevention week to raise awareness around house fires JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Catch God’s Answers to Prayers How often do we, as Christian adults, approach God in prayer to make our human created problems go away and let us “off the hook”? There is God’s work and it is to be Truth, Beauty, Love and Goodness. Then there is the work of humanity to bring all of God’s fullness to others and to work on the problems caused by our own mis- deeds and the imperfections of an incomplete world. This doesn’t mean we don’t need God’s support. We do! We pray for God’s graces so we can be up to the challenge of our tasks and to grow in courage and strength of purpose. We pray to change our own hearts and minds, not God’s. God’s mind doesn’t need fixing, ours do. We pray to put on the mindset of Christ, to be the hands, feet and heart of Jesus in our current circumstances. We need everything God has got and gives to us so as to enact God’s will and bring about God’s kingdom, here
on earth. Have you ever taught a child to play catch? We work hard to teach a child to put their hands out, to be ready, to keep their eye on the ball and then we direct all our efforts at getting the ball to land securely in their arms. But if a child only wants to throw, however erratically, there is no game. Prayer is like a game of catch. We throw a thought to God but how many of us wait around to have the ball come back to us and continue the conversation? God wants to engage in back and forth, to guide us and develop our courage and mindset. God wants to take us in the best possible direction and with the most support God can give. Try catching God’s thoughts this week in prayer. Kathy Inglis Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church

In a regular Sylvan Lake Town Council meeting Mayor Sean McIntyre proclaimed Oct. 4-10 as fire prevention week. The Town’s first responders aim to educate the community on simple precautions they can take to avoid being the victims of a house fire. In council McIntyre quoted a statistic from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), that in 2013 over 2,755 people died in house fires in Canada. “Fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally,” McIntyre said. “Homes are the locations where people are at the greatest risk from fire.” To avoid being a victim of a house fire people can take simple safety precautions such as ensuring all smoke detectors in their house are in good working order by pressing the test button once
a month. “When smoke alarms should have operated but did not do so, it was usually because batteries were missing, disconnected or dead,” McIntyre said. Fatalities resulting from house fires often occur when people are asleep and between the times of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. and this is why people need to ensure that they are able to hear the alarm in every sleeping room. “Residents should install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home,” McIntyre said. For residents who are deaf or hard of hearing, specific fire safety measures should be taken. It is also recommended that residents prepare for the event of a fire by having a specific exit route mapped out for an escape, making it more likely for residents to survive a fire. reporter@sylvanlakenews.com

Meadowview Playground redevelopment to be featured in developer’s catalogue BY JENNA SWAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Town of Sylvan Lake staff members along with their children gathered at the newly redeveloped Meadowview Playground on Saturday morning for a photo shoot with developers, Blue Imp Playgrounds. bers’ children being featured in the photo. The playground saw a $65,000 facelift over the summer thanks to the Town’s playground redevelopment program, which sees an in need playground being redeveloped every two years. Lee Furlotte, parks manager for the Town of Sylvan Lake, explained each playground is inspected annually, in which lists of deficiencies and safety issues are made aware of. “This one had a number of deficiencies with it,” explained Furlotte during a
tour of the new playground given to the Sylvan Lake News on Friday morning. “Due to the location of the playground beside a school, it sees a high volume of use - so we as the Town decided due to the large amount of usage it would be the perfect candidate for redevelopment. “Throughout all of the annual inspections when we identify a list of deficiencies we then repair them as needed or we add them to the playground redevelopment list.” During the 2013 inspec-

tion of the Meadowview Playground, which was built in the early 1980’s, projects and playgrounds operator and certified playground inspector with the Town, Brennan Cupples found the playground had failed to meet a number of safety requirements. “It was a very old wooden structure before,” explained Cupples during the tour. “It didn’t meet designated play surface (DPS) requirements, including a number of broken components beyond repair - it just needed to go.” Furlotte added one notable defect with the previous playground was the amount of moving components to it. “If things move they are more likely to undergo damage over time - so this time we went with less moving objects and a more solitary structure to ensure it is a long lasting playground.” Following Town Council’s approval for the project in 2013, Furlotte and his team were left to decide which design was right for the location. “This design really caught our eye - plain and simply, it is an attractive playground - it was within our budget and it had all of the components we were looking for in terms of less moving objects, allowing for it to be more easily maintained over time with the amount of use it sees.” While the next project under the playground redevelopment program has yet to be decided, Furlotte explained there are at least two other older wooden playgrounds within the town which they hope to see replaced in the coming years. editor@sylvanlakenews.com

face to someone - overall, it’s a good opportunity to become more familiar with our residents.” At the event Council tries to focus on one major initiative, with this year’s focus being on the land use
bylaw review – a bylaw that over sees things such as how the town will zone, plan and prepare different areas in the community. “It’s a very significant bylaw,” Guadet said. “We are in the midst of review-
ing it for some updates and rewrites.” The event will be held Sept. 30, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at SugarBelle Cakery & DIY located at #25 Beju Industrial Dr. reporter@sylvanlakenews.com

Joanne Gaudet The event has become a bit of a tradition said Sylvan Lake communications officer Joanne Gaudet. “It’s a busy time of year for us in the fall,” she said. “Everyone is coming back from summer and we’re trying to wrap up construction projects.” In addition to finishing up current projects - the Town will begin work on the budget for 2016 in which some of the feedback heard from the community during the event will be used to influence future plans. Community members are welcome to ask about the ins and outs of how different things are administered, how initiatives are prepared, or why council does what they do. “It’s a great opportunity to get those questions answered,” Guadet said. “The community of Sylvan Lake is the people we work for, so it’s good to see where they are coming from and what kind of concerns they have.” The event also provides a great opportunity for community members to clear up any concerns they may have. “Not everyone has the

Sylvan Lake’s McNeil signs with Medicine Hat Tigers
Bears defeat Rocky Rebels 44-0
STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
The Bears played their first football game of the season against the Rocky Rebels last Saturday in Rocky Mountain House and were victorious in a score of 44-0. This is a great start for the Bears as they have expectations to live up to having been the provincial and league champions last year. Head coach Garnet Rambaut said the team expects to win because they both practice and play to win, while at the same time remaining aware of the fact they can be beat. “It’s the kind of thing where you can never be 100 per cent sure that you’re going to win every game but you certainly try to do that,” Rambaut said. He added the Rockey Rebels team is an active working organization, and they provided hot dogs and other things for the players after the game.
“It’s our goal to try and prevail and we will practice to that end.” Garnet Rambaut “We had success against them last year, we tied them in our only game against them and this year we thought we would do well against them and we did,” Rambaut said. This first game and first win may pave the road to a successful season for the Bears, but Rambaut said they have to take it one game at a time, because at this point everybody has played only one game. “You really can’t judge your performance against one team,” said Rambaut. Next week the Bears play against the team they beat in the finals last year. Rambaut commented this could mean more opposition for the Bears simply because they were the league champions last year. However, it is still the Bears goal to try to over any adversities and limit the opposing team’s opportunities to score. “It’s our goal to try and prevail and we will practice to

- Sylvan Lake Bear Cody Peever scores a touch down during the game against the Rocky Rebels last Saturday. SUBMITTED that end,” Rambaut said. Rambaut is very proud of the team’s win and said that out of the 27 players, 16 of them are rookies with only 11 of them returning from last year. He said the players are still expected to do their job on the field and play to their fullest potential, with the realistic mentality that some of the players are learning their positions for the first time. Nevertheless, Rambaut said he is happy with their performance. “We were very pleasantly surprised by a lot of our rookies,” Rambaut said. “They played their positions well.” The team’s reaction to winning was pure excitement, but Rambaut added the players still have a lot more work to do with the coaches being on hand to help point out areas of growth for the young athletes. “We’re able to point out some learning opportunities for all of them regardless of whether they are a rookie or a veteran,” Rambaut said. The Bears have another five games to play for the regular season before the playoffs start. Even though Rambaut said he is very pleased with his players effort he still said they can never be over confident as there is always somebody wanting to knock them off, something he is always sure to make his players are aware of. “It’s not just what goes on at game time that matters,” Rambaut said. “We want to make sure they have a positive experience with football.” reporter@sylvanlakenews.com
A Sylvan Lake product was one of three players signed by the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League (WHL) earlier this month. Josh McNeil, 15, signed a Standard Player Agreement with the Tigers after attending the team’s annual training camp late last month. McNeil, who plays centre, was one of 11 players selected by the Tigers in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft earlier this year, and said the decision to sign with the organization was an easy one to make. “It didn’t take me very long to make the decision, because it’s a good place,” he said. “It was kind of surreal — I wasn’t really expecting
it.” McNeil attends high school in Red Deer, where he’ll also continue to play his hockey until such times as he’s called up by the Tigers. The Tigers recently announced McNeil’s signing on their website, where team staff noted the teen’s outstanding compatibility with the organization. “Josh possesses every quality we look for in a Tiger,” said Darren Kruger, senior director of player development. “He has a tremendous work ethic and passion for the game.” McNeil said he hopes to eventually play hockey professionally in either North America or Europe. Signing with the Tigers, he felt, marked a significant step taken toward achieving that goal. Josh McNeil MEDICINE HAT TIGERS HOCKEY CLUB

Tigers prove skill on the field after only a few practices JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
The Tigers minor football team played their first couple of games in Red Deer against Lacombe with head coach Jeremy Martins stating the players truly gave it their all on the field. He said thanks to some key stand out players - those being Jesse Sooley, Darien Currie, Cam Gauvin and Ryder Kasha, he hopes the team will do great this season. Even though the players gave it their all and played their best, no score was kept because the games are meant to help the children develop their playing skills. “It’s more about the kids learning how to play the game and that sort of thing as opposed to score,” Martins said.
He said the most positive thing about the games were how the team came together after only five days of practice, adding that many of the children had never played a game before. They had to learn how to play the game quickly and they did awesome. “For a group of guys who haven’t played in an organized football game before, they did amazing,” Martins said. He said there are many children on the team who are going to be awesome in the football program because they show a lot of promise when it comes to playing both sides of offence and defence. During the games players have to focus on improving their position and taking the focus off the score helps with player development. “It’s not about winning or

loosing it’s about the development and getting the kids to learn the game,” Martins said. The highlight of the games on Saturday were how the team was able to put together an offence and defence after just a hand full of practices with the team being able to make some touch downs. None of this is easy Martins said because when

ing United Way’s annual Kick-Off Luncheon on Thursday and will be using the grant for their Compassion Fund, a program which exists to give emergency financial assistance to members of the community and surrounding area with financial barriers who are in crisis. Last fiscal year SLCPA assisted 206 clients with this fund. Lori Jack, impact development officer for United Way of Central Alberta stated in honour of their 50th anniversary United Way of Central Alberta decided to access funds from the many legacy gifts their donors had left to the organization over the years. “It was decided by our board of directors to use our legacy fund to administer legacy grants to assist with collective impact initiatives,” said Jack. "Groups that were working collectively to change a social condition in their community were asked to put in a four page pro-

Lori Jack posal to the United Way and then we shortlisted it and asked three different groups to pitch their proposal to a judge panel and that was how it was decided who would receive the funding.” This meant SLCPA had to present their program to United Way in ‘Dragon’s Den’ style situation in which they and two other organizations made their cases heard in front of a judge of panels. Jack stated the judges felt the SLCPA’s united effort was making a difference in the community of Sylvan Lake by helping community members to not be in such dire circumstances if they were living too close to the edge of poverty.
“One of our priorities at United Way is supporting people and giving people a hand up and out of poverty in order to help people move forward and that was obviously an objective of the Compassion Fund,” said Jack. “They did a great job pitching their project and they are working well as a community to address the significant social need of people who are living close to poverty or in poverty.” Alanna Dextrase, administrative/events coordinator for SLCPA, explained in an email to Sylvan Lake News that the Compassion Fund is a joint initiative between Sylvan Lake Ministerial and the Sylvan Lake Food Bank.
“It has been noted that the number of clients and the need has been increasing in the last few months,” said Dextrase in her email. “Funding is put into this project by all the local churches but there has been difficulty for these organizations to supply all the funds needed. Any grant monies received go directly to this fund and are not used for any other purpose.” She added the goal of the Compassion Fund is ultimately to assist individuals and families that are in crisis while helping them work on the issues that determined this crisis and to find solutions for them. “Success is measured by the outcomes of the assistance given,” said Dextrase. “Some clients apply to the fund more than once but there is a maximum allowed, each client knowing they must make the most of the help they receive.” editor@sylvanlakenews.com

ECKENSWILLER Michael Charles Michael Charles “Mike” Eckenswiller passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on Thursday, September 10, 2015. Mike was born on February 26, 1936 in Walkerton, ON to Michael and Rita Eckenswiller (nee Montag). He moved to Red Deer in 1952 and farmed east of Red Deer in the 1970’s. However, Mike is remembered best by his contributions to the building of Red Deer both in structure and by his many small start-up businesses, some of which are still here and prosperous today. His ventures ranged from cafes to oil field hauling, cement companies and cranes. In fact, his cranes aided in the construction of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Parkland Mall, and the Rocket in Kin Kanyon, which many children enjoyed for years. His interests included fishing, river boating, and berry picking. He traveled extensively throughout the world and had volunteered for the Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO). Mike was especially proud of being one of the founding members of the Red Deer Prostate Cancer Support Group. “He wasn’t the best but he was better than the rest!” He leaves to mourn his passing, his children and their families; Cindy Cornale and her children, Nathan, Michael and Shelby Cornale, Christine (Keith Veres) Eckenswiller and their children, Amanda Eckenswiller and Travis Veres, Rhonda (Ken) Vick and their children, Amber, Christopher and Tayler Vick, Michael (Marnie) Eckenswiller and their children, Kyle and Emily Eckenswiller, Tracey (Ryan) Graham and their children, Kaden, Ryder, Halle and Tate Graham, his special friend, Darlene Shuya, the mother of his children, Gladys (Eckenswiller), sisters; Rita Molnar, Dorothy Penney and Grace Bush, sister-in-law, Mary Eckenswiller, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members. What’s Happening
GULOIEN On August 30, 2015 we said goodbye to our friend, Dad, Grandpa, jazz musician, role model and favourite comedian, Jim Guloien. Jim will be missed profusely, as he was not only a husband, father and grandfather, but a best friend to his family. From tips on politics, real estate and finance to relationships and shoes, his intelligence and insight was limitless. He leaves behind too many loved ones to list in a book, let alone a paragraph. Anyone who was lucky enough to meet him was moved by his kind heart, quick wit and legendary sense of humour. In honour of this amazing man, we ask that you listen to a song with a good beat, shamelessly tell your worst joke and think of him when you pick out a great pair of heels. Remember him smiling, laughing, dancing, cracking jokes and killing an alto solo. A promise to celebrate and remember Jim is in the works for this summer of 2016.

BY JENNA SWAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
The Sylvan Lake Fire Hall, located at 4301-47 Ave, sold earlier this week after having been for sale less than two weeks. While Town staff are currently unable to release details of who bought the former location, they did add they are thrilled to see the new fire hall currently under construction making exceptional progress. Built in 1996, the current fire hall has three large bays and one smaller bay but the building itself is no longer big enough to house the growing Sylvan Lake Fire Department membership. The selling of the building, which is owned by the Town, comes at a perfect time as construction nears completion on the the new fire hall. Fire Chief Cliff Brausen stated during an interview with Sylvan Lake News he hopes to see the Department moving into the new building in early 2016. The new building, located on the corner of 50 St. and Beacon Hill Drive, contains eight full bays, which Brausen explained will allow for the department to continue to grow. “The detachment is very excited, said
Brausen. “We’ve been crowded here [in the old Fire Hall] for a while now, and the new building looks incredible with a really beautiful and interesting design - I think the members are really going to enjoy being in there. When the current hall was built in the mid 90’s the building allowed for a capacity of 24 members, however currently the department has around 30 regular volunteer firefighters. Brausen stated with this many members in such a small space it makes training more difficult. He added having 30 members means during training time the department was having to split into two groups to train in order to accommodate everyone, in turn doubling the time it took for training. The new hall lists a project cost of $6,270,050 and in addition to the eight full sized bays will also contain a fitness facility for members, shower and locker spaces, as well as three office spaces one for Brausen, one for Deputy Chief Steve Scanland, and one more an administration assistant. The design of the new building, created by SAHURI + Partners Architecture Inc. out of Calgary,
Moving Forward - Fire Chief Cliff Brausen displays the sold sign in front of the current Sylvan Lake Fire Hall. The building sold earlier this week, with the department remaining in the building until early 2016 when the new fire hall located in Beacon Hill is completed. JENNA SWAN is described on the designer’s website as a contemporary interpretation of lakeside architecture influenced by the aesthetics of traditional docks, piers and boathouses. Brausen said the need for a new fire hall did not come from increased call volume, but rather the increased diversity of the calls the fire department sees which in turn requires them to have a larger volume of members. “We are no longer just a fire station, we go to motor vehicle collisions, medical calls to back up the ambulance, and it puts more demand on the fire fighters, so we are always needing to add more members to the department to ensure they get the rest they need, but the higher need for more mem-
bers means we need more space to be able to train them. Currently the Department has three engines, one rescue truck, one rapid response truck, two squad trucks used by the Chief and Deputy Chief, as well as a water tanker shared with Public Works. The Town also hopes to order an aerial ladder truck in the coming months. Dave Brand, Director of Public Works for the Town of Sylvan Lake, stated the project is both on time and on budget with recent weather delays due to rain only causing a minor delay. “It is going to be a wonderful building in a fantastic location, said Brand during an interview. “Right as you come over the hill on 50 St. you will see both the
R.C.M.P. and M u n i c i p a l Enforcement building right next to the beautiful new firehall - this means all of our protective services people are well situated and centrally located in town, “It’s just something that we are going to be very proud to have, it means our fire department is going to have the space to train and learn as best as possible to protect our town and the surrounding areas to the best of their abilities to keep us safe. He added the Town is pleased to see the fire hall building sold as quickly as it did, to which he attributes is indicative of the quality of the building itself as well as of the neighbourhood it is in. editor@sylvanlakenews.com
