As part of a two-day course on restoration management at Selkirk College, students helped install slope stabilization structures on the Kettle River by the Sion Cemetery site on Friday.
Troy named Green candidate SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
Samantha Troy is the Green candidate for South Okanagan – West Kootenay, announced the Green Party of Canada last week. “It is my pleasure to have Sam join us as a Green Party candidate,” said Carrie McLaren, Green Party of Canada BC organizer. “As a working mom, passionate and resourceful, she offers an excellent choice for voters in South Okanagan – West Kootenay on Oct. 19.” Samantha (Sam) Troy lives in Rossland, B.C. working at Red Mountain Ski Resort in

outdoor operations and dispatch. She currently serves as both shop steward and health
and safety chair. After working 20 years in forestry she joined the Green Party because she sees how climate change is directly impacting the local environment and economy. “Resource sector and tourism jobs in this riding depend directly on the environment,” Troy concluded. “Pine beetle, drought, rain instead of powder days and range land lost to fire all hurt my riding. We need a new federal government that understands that the economy and environmental protection are both related and important.” Troy can be reached at samantha.troy@greenparty.ca.
Everyone who watches the Kettle River has seen it change its course over time. But when Pat Horkoff saw rapidly advancing erosion threaten graves at the Sion Cemetery west of Grand Forks, he called together local groups to find and implement solutions. Since 2011, Horkoff, chair of the Sion Cemetery Society, has noticed a disturbing trend on the slope below the site. The north bank of the Kettle River had started slipping into the river at an alarming rate. Not only were graves at risk: sediment from the eroding slope threatened to choke the valuable fish habitat in the side-channel just downstream. The problem stemmed from a log jam that shifted, directing a portion of the current against the slope and undercutting the unstable sand and gravel. Horkoff approached me, Jenny Coleshill of the Granby Wilderness Society and regional district drector Roly Russell to ask for help. What could we do to protect the cemetery and the side channel? Over the last year, we developed a plan to protect fish habitat and graves at the same time using a “soil bioengineering” approach with native plants. We knew the steep, unstable slope made it a very difficult site for a typical engineering solution such as “rip-rap” (angular boulders placed on the base of the slope). Furthermore, having machinery cross the river would be too risky and costly. Instead, we investigated using woody plants such as cottonwood, willows and red-osier dogwood to stabilize the slope. The practice is known as “soil bioengineering” (not to be confused with genetic engineering and genetically modified organisms, or GMO). These plants are special. First, they adapted to life on riverbanks and gravel bars by tolerating “wet feet”—roots and stems that can be submerged for part of the growing season. They grow roots rapidly in search of nutrients and

1905 The Granby mines shipped 14,046 tons of ore during the past week. The smelter at Grand Forks treated 14,102 tons for the corresponding time. These figures represent the greatest tonnage ever handled by the mines and smelter in any one week. 1910 The first fall fair held in Grand Forks this week surpasses all expectations 1,001 entries made in various sections. 1945 Premier John Hart announced in Grand Forks that an additional $10 million will be set aside next year for the further development of electric power in the province.
1950 Alpine Inn, situated on English Point at Christina Lake, was destroyed by fire of unknown origin. Value of the building, covered by insurance, was $60,000. 1955 The Grand Forks and District Chamber of Commerce celebrated their first birthday and at the same time saw Art Stavenjord installed as new president. Retiring president was Bill Zoelner. 1960 Work began on the construction of the new school building in Grand Forks to be erected between the present elementary and the primary school. 1965 Numerous briefs were presented to the Provincial Redistribution Commission when it held a courthouse hearing last week. Most of the submissions were protesting the chopping up of the Grand Forks/Greenwood riding. 1970 Dennis Euerby (former manager of Grand Forks Esso Service Garage) assumed operation of the Imperial bulk oil agency from Alf Peterson, who will now devote his time to the building business. 1975 The indefinite closure of Carson bridge by the Dept. of Highways has brought a sharp reaction from J.M. be obtained for portions of the downtown area and whether downtown revitalization projects and heritage preservation here can complement each other. 1990 John Cashore, NDP environment critic; David Zirnhelt, NDP resource management critic; Bill Barlee, MLA, Boundary-Similkameen; and Dan Miller, NDP forestry critic, were in town Wednesday to conduct a task force hearing on community involvement in resource-use decision-making. 1995 About 12,000 pounds of marijuana went up in smoke after RCMP discovered an enormous pot plantation about eight kilometres north of Westbridge. The seizure of the 5,000 genetically cloned mature plants, with a street value of $25 million, was the largest in Boundary history. Midway RCMP say arrests are forthcoming. 2000 The City of Grand Forks has decided to sell $730,000 worth of city land. The property, 14.52 acres wedged between Highway 3, 27th St. and 67th Ave., will be advertised as being available as either one single or several separate properties. The open land at the city’s west entrance has long been considered a key area for development. 2005 The Ministry of Economic Development has announced that Grand Forks will receive $330,000 towards a new community centre. The amount is the largest possible contribution that can be awarded through the Olympic Live Sites program. 2010 Forty-eight participants braved the rain to participate in the annual Terry Fox Run, which took off from the aquatic centre parking lot on Sunday morning. In total, $6,038 was raised to help fight cancer with Doug Anthony raising $4,100 in pledges.

Tough decisions ahead The recent press release from the city regarding their asset management plans had not been taken well by many residents. Although nothing has been approved as of yet, it’s clear that there will be several changes in the coming months. No one likes to see their taxes raised or services reduced. Even worse is the loss of three (one is currently vacant) union jobs. To lay all the blame at the hands of the CAO or the mayor or council is unfair. These decisions have been in the works for years. As an older city, Grand Forks has an aging infrastructure that will need to be upgraded soon enough. The money has to come from the city coffers. We just can’t rely on grant money from the provincial government. Every other community in B.C. is fighting for those all important grant dollars. The only other way to pay for infrastructure, other than cutting jobs or services and/or raising taxes, is to borrow money. Borrowing money would require a tax increase of 13 per cent over the next 25 years. Staff cuts are not the only option outlined in the city’s goal of achieving financial sustainability— all options are still being considered. It is obvious that tough decisions have to be made.
New TV season is a sure sign of fall

On The Ball CRAIG LINDSAY Can you believe it’s fall already? I can’t. Summer seemed to last a very long time. Normally that would be a good thing but I think with the early hot weather followed by drought conditions and then wildfires and smoky skies—it just kept going. But now the cooler weather is upon us and the threat of fires is all but gone. In addition, school is back in session and hockey is back as well. Another reminder of fall is the start of the new TV season and as usual there are plenty of exciting new shows to look forward to as well as some old favourites about to start up again. One interesting new show is The Bastard Executioner on FX. It comes from the creator of Sons of Anarchy (SOA), the biker gang show that
just ended its strong run. The Bastard Executioner is supposed to be even more bloody and violent than SOA and also stars Katey Sagal. Whether it can be as interesting and entertaining as SOA and Game of Thrones, which is also set in a medieval era, is yet to be seen. Heroes Reborn sees the once-popular super-hero show return with a mostly new cast. The original Heroes was popular and a lot of fun, at least for the first few seasons. It also came before the super-hero movie and TV show explosion that we now see with the Dark Knight, Avengers and X-Men franchises. Hopefully it can capture some of that first season magic. Limitless and Minority Report were fairly successful sci-fi movies that have returned as TV shows. Bradley Cooper, from the Limitless movie, is the executive director and apparently will reprise his character. Minority Report won’t have Tom Cruise on board but could be entertaining as a psychic cop tries to stop crimes after seeing into the future. I
wonder if he’s seen the future ratings yet for the show? A lot of people are looking forward to the return of the Muppets as Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie and the rest of the crew return. I enjoyed the show growing up but wasn’t crazy about the recent movies. Besides, I’m holding out for a Fraggle Rock reboot. Of the returning shows this fall, the Walking Dead is one my most anticipated. The show has gotten better after a couple of shaky seasons out at the farm. Leader Rick Grimes is appearing more and more unhinged as the group faces more threats both from the zombies and from other survivors. Fan favourites Darryl and Michonne also appear ready to mix it up as panic sets in. There is also a new sort of prequel on AMC now called Fear the Walking Dead, which deals with Los Angeles right as the outbreak begins. American Horror Story (AHS) returns as well with the latest season set at a hotel. Each season, AHS

is set in a different setting with a completely different group of characters. The last season was set in a circus side show and featured some very scary characters including a really evil clown, a bearded lady and a killer in a bow tie. This season features Lady Gaga, who some think is much worse. I’m also looking forward to returning super hero shows the Flash and Gotham. Both had solid first seasons and have plenty of potential. Flash sometimes shows its CW roots and gets a bit angsty but is overall really fun. Gotham is about the origins of great Batman villains like Scarecrow and Penguin but, unfortunately, Batman isn’t around except as a young teenaged Bruce Wayne. As for comedies, Brooklyn NineNine continues to be comedy gold with the hilarious antics of a dysfunctional police station in New York led by Andy Samberg. This year Bill Hader takes over as squad commander from Andre Braugher.

Opinion
to the editor
Read the paper, look at science
Editor, The Gazette: “Jobs and the Economy”— we hear this mantra constantly from our federal and provincial governments. In B.C., progress towards these goals is being made, but the big-ticket resource projects take time to develop. But what would you say if there was a widely supported proposal ready to go in Southern B.C. that would potentially create over 700 jobs, $50 million in GDP, $35 million in labour income, and $4 million in tax revenues, annually? (“The Economic Impact of Parks Canada”, A National Study by the Outpsan Group INC, 2011.) What if it would increase tourism, support business growth, encourage investment, bring new facilities to the South Okanagan and Boundary regions, and increase passengers through our airports? What about a proposal that would protect one of Canada’s most unique landscape and many of its endangered species, while all the while accommodating existing land uses? This incredible opportunity is ready and waiting—a new national park reserve in the South Okanagan-Similkameen. It would cost the province next to nothing as all the
costs to establish and manage it would be the responsibility of the Government of Canada, who is eager to move forward. Moreover, the provincial government has neither the resources nor the budget to come anywhere near matching Parks Canada in achieving these potential benefits. The results of a recent scientific public poll conducted by McAllister Opinion Research show a strong majority of wide public support for the national park reserve, and the support is continuing to grow: • Support for the national park is 3:1 in the Regional District of South OkanaganSimilkameen, up from 2:1 in 2010. • Support in MLA Larson’s Boundary-Similkameen Riding is 2:1. • Support in MLA Ashton’s Penticton Riding is 4:1. • Opposition has decreased to 21 per cent. • 89 per cent believe that protecting endangered species should be a high priority. • And, interestingly enough, the highest proportion of support comes from families who cited ranching/ farming, hunting and ATV riding as their prime activities. Regional districts, Cham-
Venerable animated shows Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park also all return and should provide plenty of funny, if occasionally inappropriate, moments. As for the cinema, while there’s a little movie called Star Wars – The Force Awakens due Dec. 18. After the debacle of the last three movies, which are actually the first three movies in the series, fans are excited as J.J. Abrams takes over the helm. Abrams was able to reboot the Star Trek franchises
bers of Commerce (including the B.C. Chamber of Commerce), tourism associations, municipal councils (including Grand Forks, Greenwood and Midway), the B.C. Wine Institute, the Union of British Columbia Municipalities and First Nations (the Okanagan Nation Alliance), have all voiced their strong support for the provincial government to re-engage negotiations with the federal government. The provincial government has responded appropriately by issuing its public Intentions Paper on a proposed land use framework including a national park reserve. I urge you not to rely on old-school folk tales...but to read the paper, to look at the science, to look at the potential economic benefits, to look at the accommodation of existing land uses, and to draw your own informed conclusions as to whether we should re-engage with the federal government. If we don’t like what they have to say, we can always walk away. Steve Hollett, Former Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance and Federal-Provincial Negotiator, Greenwood

first appearance of the iconic villain Darth Vader. It was hard to believe a movie was capable of being that good and that entertaining. It wasn’t long before my bedroom wall was all adorned with Stars Wars posters and I had to have all comics, shirts and toys as well. Although I’m not a huge fan boy anymore, I’m still excited, as I’m sure are many people, to see another Star Wars movie done right. If that happens, it will be a great Christmas present that’s for sure.

On health and climate change The health issues that North Americans will have to deal in the future may be different in many respects from those that our medical profession treats today. The World Health Organization (WHO) is warning us that we could soon be dealing with diseases that have never existed in our part of the world. Climate change has made the difference. With a global warming trend that is decades old lethal and rapidly Rousing spreading infectious diseases such as the Rabble malaria and Ebola and chronic diseases such as diabetes are reasons for us to ROY RONAGHAN pay close attention. An article in the New England Journal of Medicine on globalization, climate change and human health states, “The new form of globalization is an interconnected world and global mass culture, often referred to as a ‘global village’.” Globalization is now an umbrella term used to describe the changes that societies and the world economy have undergone since the 19th century. The term covers just about everything in our lives and includes cross-border trade, investments, cultural exchanges and human health. A couple of paragraphs from a collaborative report by The Lancet, a peer reviewed medical journal and the University College of London Institute for Global Health Commission identify the threats of living in the global village. “This report outlines the major threats—both direct and indirect—to global health from climate change through changing patterns of disease, water and food insecurity, vulnerable shelter and human settlements, extreme climate events, and population growth and migration.” “Although vector-borne diseases will expand their reach and death tolls, especially among elderly people, will increase because of heat waves, the indirect effects of climate change on water, food security, and extreme climate events are likely to have the biggest effect on global health.” (Ticks are vectors for Lyme disease and mosquitoes are vectors for malaria.) Heat waves are a common cause of weather related deaths—more so in cities than rural areas—because of the heat sinks created by large concrete structures and paved streets. During heat waves, ground-level ozone is created when several volatile gases combine to produce a toxic mix that can reduce lung function and inflame airways. Children and elders are most vulnerable. When we know that the potential impacts of climate change on human health are of such magnitude, why are we not doing more to reduce our output of greenhouse gases (GHG)? Indeed it is a conundrum. Scientists think the answer to the question is a reframing of the message with a focus on human health. Their hope is that a different message will convince people to reduce their GHG emissions in large enough quantities to make a difference. The WHO has said that climate change is a critical public health problem. Existing diseases and conditions can worsen and new pests and pathogens can be introduced into new regions and communities. Most vulnerable to the new diseases will be the elderly, the poor and those with existing health conditions. Not much is said about the stress these new diseases will place on health care systems in North America but we can assume it will be huge as diseases that have never before been on the list are treated. The warming of the globe and the climate change that has accompanied it is not about to suddenly cease. After decades there is not much that can be done to change what is happening. The impacts on human health that emerge as time passes will be a challenge and it makes sense that people everywhere become as well informed about them as possible. There is a wealth of information on climate change and its health impacts available on line. Good sources are the Lancet, published in Britain, and the New England Journal of Medicine published in Massachusetts. A paper published in 2010 by The Interagency Working Group on Climate Change and Health called A Human Perspective on Climate Change makes interesting reading. Such documents are enlightening and deserve our attention.

Letters

to the editor
It’s time we moved forward
Editor, The Gazette: As a new resident to Grand Forks, I continue to be baffled by the populations’ confusion around water meters and radio frequencies (RFs). Moreover, I am discouraged by the lack of respect for public officials who, I believe, are making decisions based on good faith and good science. For the record, it is next to impossible to find a credible organization that has concerns about RFs associated specifically with water meters. Please keep in mind, and this is important, that the water meters being installed in Grand Forks only transmit RFs for a total of 43 seconds each day (the signal is not continuous). In the time it took me to write this letter, on a wireless device with
WiFi, I was exposed to 20 years of water meter equivalent RFs. To be absolutely clear, if you are concerned with the health impacts of RFs from water meters, your aim is misguided. Now, if you were born to worry, not unlike my grandmother, I can provide a few issues where you can direct that energy. Climate Change: according to NASA, “97 per cent of climate scientists” agree that humans are warming the planet. Fires, floods, droughts, environmental refugees and food security, are all cause for serious concern. Diabetes: according to the Canadian Diabetes Association, one in four Canadians is diabetic or pre-diabetic (will develop diabetes within 10
years). This is a problem. The future of Grand Forks: over the last couple of months I’ve spoken with a number of young families, all of whom are planning to leave town (or have already left). When asked why, they were fairly consistent in citing they felt “a lack of community.” In reading the weekly, often mean-spirited, letters in the Gazette, I could not disagree. For the record, not one family mentioned water meters or radio frequencies as a reason for leaving Grand Forks. Perhaps it is time we move forward and collectively focus our energies on creating a vibrant and welcoming community. Spencer Tracy, Grand Forks
Editor, The Gazette: Cecil the lion has certainly generated a lot of buzz and anger at trophy hunting but as expected the story that will determine the future of the African lion has been conveniently ignored. An intelligent debate would start with a review of former CBS Sixty Minutes’ reporter Bob Simon’s clip a few years ago in which he asked the question “Does the African lion have a future?” The essence of Bob’s story
was the lion population was in serious decline because they were being poisoned! Not hard to figure, subsequent to Cecil, a lion killed an African tourist guide connected to the same lion pride. Savannah Guthrie, the NBC news broadcaster on the morning Today Show, interviewed a scientist who claimed he had been involved with a significant number of lion studies. The scientist did not criticize the trophy hunt as Savannah had expected but made the
point that he wanted to support an initiative to help rebuild the lion population that had declined from 400,000 to 33,000. Whatever the sum of the strategy and tactics necessary to rebuild a lion population, money will be the kicker so is the trophy hunt part of the problem or part of the solution. After all, African economies have little resources for conservation and little sympathy for the lion! Barry Brandow, Grand Forks

moisture, up to one centimetre per day, quickly creating a root mass that can protect the banks from further erosion much better than the fine, shallow roots of grasses. Most importantly, if the timing is right their stems can root almost anywhere along the length, even when there is no roots. In natural floodplain environments, this allows pieces of stem broken off by floods, storms or landslides to rapidly root and colonize new environments. Bioengineering practitioners use this to their advantage by deeply planting dormant, live cuttings directly in the ground. When combined with other structural features such as large rocks and anchored logs, bioengineering can provide a cost-effective and beautiful solution to slope stabilization and streambank protection problems that benefits fish and wildlife habitat better than traditional engi-

Tree-planting a world record! SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
A team of 67 volunteers and forest professionals from local forestry company Interfor have officially helped set a world record. On May 20 of this year, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) partnered with local teams from 29 communities across Canada and the U.S. to set a new
world record for the most trees planted simultaneously within a one-hour period by teams of 25 to 100 participants. Guinness has just confirmed that the 202,935 trees planted by the 29 teams sets an official world record! The Interfor team planted 8,227 seedlings at two Interfor harvest locations in the Southern Interior, including at Windfall Creek near Greenwood, where they were joined by students, teachers
and parents from Dr. D.A. Perley Elementary School. “As SFI celebrates its 20th anniversary, I can’t think of a more exciting way to recognize and reinforce our commitment to healthy forests and sustainable communities, and to reaffirm that the actions we take today can have a significant and material impact on the future of our forests,” said Kathy Abusow, president and CEO of SFI.
Literacy skills are absolutely essential SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
More than half a million British Columbians face significant challenges because of limited literacy skills, whether it’s an inability to read the newspaper, or a lack of understanding of important financial or health documents. Literacy skills are vital to all British Columbians because they are a necessary part of everyday life and impact everything from healthcare to employment and economic status. Literacy is no longer just the ability to read or write, but encompasses a much wider scope of daily activities—including using technology, doing calculations, communicating verbally and in writing, and problem-solving.
This month, Black Press and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) are joining forces to raise funds and awareness about the importance of literacy with the 5th Annual Reach a Reader campaign. The campaign will culminate with
literacy programs. The Reach a Reader campaign coincides with Decoda Literacy Solutions’ Literacy is Life Campaign; a provincewide fundraising and awareness campaign designed to put a human face on literacy and shed light on how low literacy affects children and adults, Aboriginal and immigrant communities, those in the workforce, and the economy as a whole. CBAL’s executive director, Ali Wassing, says “Literacy skills are essential for a vibrant B.C. economy, so addressing limited levels benefits everyone. We would encourage anyone who is affected by literacy issues to tap into the many resources and literacy programs available in their community.” To find out more about literacy in the Boundary region, contact Sheila Dobie at sdobie@cbal.org or go to cbal.org.

Join us from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Boundary Museum (6145 Reservoir Road) to mingle with local farmers as they make a little music, serve up some food and celebrate our resilient community at the end of another mostly successful, yet challenging, growing season. Bring the entire family to this admission-free event to participate in games for the young at heart, watch a breadmaking demonstration, enjoy
entertainment provided by talented local groups, share in some freshly pressed cider and sample hearty homemade soups and pie. Check out the fascinating museum collection and gather information from a variety of displays. It’s a welcome opportunity to bump into friends and neighbours you might not
have seen for awhile to relax and compare notes on how you spent the last few months. Load up your chairs or blankets to come out and settle down for some much-deserved, old-fashioned harvest festival fun! Anyone wanting more information or hoping to help out can contact Yelena at yelenamoonrose@yahoo.com.

CannaFest offers thanks CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
Cannafest will be back next year and from the looks of things it’ll be even bigger and better. The 2016 line-up was announced on Thursday at a Cannafest Thanks You party at James Donaldson Park. The evening featured a performance from Grand Forks’ own Mad Dog 20/20. The event also featured free burgers and fries as well as the announcement of the (unofficial) line-up for next year’s event. “It’s kind of a thank you to anyone who came and volunteered back in August for CannaFest,” said organizer Chuck Varabioff, who was back in Grand Forks for the event. “Without the volunteers I couldn’t have had the success I did. This
was a way to give back.” In between songs, Mad Dog 20/20 announced the bands for 2016 which include Chilliwack, Toronto, Sass Jordan, Honeymoon Suite, the return of Headpins, and Doug and Slugs, although without lead singer Doug Bennett, who sadly passed away in 2004. Cannafest 2016 will take place on Aug. 5 and 6. “The line-up’s incredible,” said Varabioff. “The bands are all looking forward to coming. They heard what a success this year was and they’re all looking forward to it.” The official announcement will take place on Oct. 1, which is also the day when advance tickets are available. For more information and/or advance tickets visit cannafest.ca. Early bird tickets will also be available at the Source in Grand Forks.

Autumn is a reminder of the transitions of life. It is a time of great beauty while at the same time it is a season of change and decline. These rhythms of life ground us and help us feel more rooted in the world. The first day of autumn is the equinox, when the length of day and night is of equal length. In this balance between light and darkness we can see this transition mirrored in our own bodies and minds. With the coming of fall we may find ourselves turning inwards. It can be a time of introspection, a time to assess and rebalance. Learning from the past we can cultivate and deepen our understanding, furthering growth and renewal. Bruins drop two at home CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
After a season opening win over North Okanagan, it’s been all losses for the struggling Border Bruins. The Bruins lost both games this weekend at home to two divisional opponents. On Friday against Beaver Valley, it was all Nitehawks as the visitors pounded on the Border Bruins 8-0. The always strong ‘hawks took period leads of 2-0 and 4-0 as they dominated the whole night long led by Braden Fuller’s two goals and one assist. Anthony Gallart got the loss for Grand Forks, surrendering seven goals on 42 shots in 46:10 of play. Nikki MacLurzynski played for 13:50 and gave up a goal on seven shots. BV outshot the Bruins 49-20. “Beaver Valley is really good and we played really bad,” said

Emery Olauson, Bruins coach and general manager. “It was a combination of nothing going right…they’re a veteran club; they’re well coached; they recruit extremely well. Their top end players will make you pay for mistakes and we made a lot of them.” The Bears played better Sunday afternoon as they lost a tough one 2-1 to the Nelson Leafs. After trailing 1-0 in the second period, Shayne Pluto tied the score assisted by Phillippe Lam. The Leafs got the winning goal in the third period and held on for the win. “We had a really flat start,” said Olauson. “Whether it was nerves or a hangover from Friday’s game against Beaver Valley, it was a rough first period. Normally you expect the road team to come out slow in the first but the slow team was us.” Olauson said the team over-
all was inconsistent. He is hoping to see stronger efforts particularly from the returning players. “It seems there are some players happy to not get beat by a lot,” he said. “In reality, a loss is a loss whether you get beat by one or by six. Zero points in the standings hurts either way.” Olauson did say that although the loss wasn’t good it was an improvement over Friday’s game. “We took a step in the right direction,” he said. “Nelson is a good squad. As young as we are with a mostly rookie line-up I do expect some growing pains but I also expect 100 per cent effort.” The Bruins will try to get back in the win column with another home game on Saturday this time against the Kelowna Chiefs. Sunday the team heads to Spokane to face the Braves.

Spotlight Films presents Love and Mercy LARRY HUDEMA
Submitted to the Gazette
On Tuesday, Sept. 29, Spotlight Films will be presenting the movie Love and Mercy. Brian Wilson, the creative soul of the Beach Boys, was a musical voyageur, treading new and exciting musicscapes. He created the tender California sound, a rhythmic blind faith in teen romance that thrived despite the growing cultural thirst for the cynicism of Dylan, the unfocused anger of
The Who, the ethereal omnipotence of the Beatles, and the street fighting masculinity of the Stones. Wilson was later impressed and influenced somewhat by the Beatles, particularly the album Rubber Soul and Phil Spectre’s wall of sound style such as in Be My Baby, (sung by the Ronettes). He wanted to evolve his music and fired his father/manager for resisting change. He paid a heavy price for his talent. In the 1960s, young songwriter and recording savant Brian Wilson (Paul Dano, Little Miss Sunshine) finds himself in the midst of extraordinary success after scoring numerous hit records with The Beach Boys. Following a dramatic panic attack on the plane taking the band to Houston to open a tour, he re-
signed from concert touring and ventured into the studio intent on creating “the greatest album ever made” Pet Sounds. Meanwhile, his grip on reality slowly loosened as he attempted to cope with the overwhelming voices in his head. Later, in the 1980s, a middle-aged Wilson (John Cusack, War Inc., Being John Malkovich) is shown to be a broken, confused man under the pharmacological and legal thrall of therapist Dr. Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti, Sideways, Cinderella Man). After meeting Wilson, Cadillac saleswoman Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks, Hunger Games II, TV’s Modern Family) is determined to save him from his crippling subservience to the manipulative doctor. Directed by Bill Pohlad (producer 12 Years a Slave) the film derives its title from the 1988 song by Wilson and is presented in a parallel narrative covering the two specific time periods in Wilson’s life: the 1960s and the 1980s. The film premiered in the special presentations section of the 2014 Toronto In-
ternational Film Festival. It received critical acclaim, with reviewers praising the film for its unorthodox approach to biography, original film score by composer Atticus Ross, Dano’s convincing performance as the increasingly unstable Wilson of the 1960s, and scenes which closely recreate Wilson’s advanced studio recording methods. The real life Wilson—who had little involvement with the film’s development— called it “very factual.” Love and Mercy won Best Original Song at the Nashville Film Festival and was nominated for nine other awards, including Best narrative Feature for Pohlard at the Sydney International Film Festival. Love and Mercy will be shown at the GEM Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Thanks to Wikipedia, Internet Movie Database (IMdB), the documentary Pet Sounds-Art That Shook the World, and Rotten Tomatoes. Thanks also to Marius and Maureen Paquet of the GEM Theatre and to our sponsors and patrons.

Library gathers only necessary data They Know Everything About You If you’ve been following current events in recent years, you’ve probably heard a lot of people talking about privacy. In 2013, Edward Snowden dropped multiple bombshells about the NSA in the U.S. and CSEC in Canada illegally collecting incredible amounts of seemingly insignificant information about citizens from their internet activity. There was further uproar about privacy in the months leading up to the passing of Bill C-51, the “Anti-Terrorism Act,” which many criticised as a way to legalise all of the illegal government spying on Canadians that had recently come to light, and not necessarily to prevent terrorism. Still more concerns have come to light regarding the international Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement, which many people claim contains attempts to make government

spying even easier by wrapping surveillance provisions inside of copyright language. Whether or not you think you have anything to hide, privacy is something you have a right to. At the public library, we do not collect any more data about you than is strictly necessary to maintain operations, and we erase that data as soon as we no longer need it. That means we don’t keep a record of the books you’ve checked out (as long as you bring them back!), we don’t keep track of what you do using our Internet or computers, and we never release any information we have about you without a specific police warrant.

sad story about their trailer – apparently, they bought it off a private seller before coming on vacation. Just a month later, the electrical system was failing. They’d been trapped for a week trying to track down the seller and find their way home. Their crisis was my opportunity! I played the friendly nextdoor neighbour. to know? I didn’t think twice as I rolled the odometer just a tad to hide some of that trail dust. In typical curber fashion, I left no traces of what I’d done. To a trusting buyer, I was giving them a great deal! Like making a silk purse from a sow’s ear… As always, lady luck was on my side. I met an older couple in the campground where I was staying. The lady even gave me some mighty tasty peaches as a thank-you for saving their vacation. A little spit and polish, some electrical trickery and I had two vehicles to sell. Their old pickup and their trailer! I could ride my scooter home if I needed to.
It’s a good thing they didn’t learn from their first experience! They didn’t think to call a licensed RV dealer for help they could trust. Didn’t ask for a vehicle history report, like CarProof. Didn’t spot the rust. As the young Clint Eastwood would say, I’d be livin’ high and wide at the end of my ride! But first, I needed to go for a swim and then stop at that fine looking winery up the road.

Licensed Dealers Beat Curbers by a Mile Deciding between buying privately or from a licensed dealer? Buying from a private seller might have one perceived benefit – lower price. But, even that can disappear when looking at the risks, especially if the private seller is actually a curber – an unlicensed dealer intentionally breaking all the rules. Unlike private sellers, licensed dealers must be transparent in their selling practices. This means they must sell vehicles in a clear and open manner while standing behind any representations they make. Dealers can’t withhold information that would cause errors in judgment about whether or not to buy the vehicle. Licenced dealers must also follow strict selling standards. Only licensed salespeople who pass a background check and a certification course are allowed to sell vehicles. Dealers must declare prior out-of-province registrations and vehicle uses (if it was a lease, rental, taxi
or emergency vehicle). Prior damage, above certain limits, must also be disclosed before purchase. And, licensed dealers are obligated to sell vehicles that meet all safety requirements and are free of unpaid liens. As part of being licensed, dealers contribute to a customer compensation fund that regularly settles eligible claims around the province. Dealers also offer extra services and savings such as financing and warranty options. And, there’s a sales tax advantage when trading-in a vehicle at a dealer. Licensed dealers make an investment in their staff, operations, reputation and their community. Curbers escape doing any of the above. And, the Vehicle Sales Authority can assist only with purchases from licensed dealers. If something goes wrong with a private sale, you’re on your own. Learn more at the vehiclesalesauthority.com.
CURBERS SELL VEHICLES THAT MAY BE UNSAFE OR STOLEN! Curbers are individuals and businesses selling vehicles for profit without a licence Curbers may get junk cars and sell them from parking lots while posing as private sellers. They advertise through local newspapers and online ads. They may not disclose the vehicle history to the buyer, hiding serious accident
damage or even a rolled back odometer. Licensed dealers are required by law to sell safe, lien-free vehicles and disclose vehicle histories. If you buy from Walt, you have none of the protections of buying from a licensed dealer.
At a minimum, get a CarProof Vehicle History Report before you buy Find a licensed dealer or report a curber at
