The 70th annual Rock Creek Fall Fair began on a cool, moist Saturday morning last weekend. LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

Quote of the Week: Love is the difficult realization that something other than oneself is real. – Iris Murdoch (1919 - 1999) Joke of the Week: Deep within a forest a little turtle began to climb a tree. After hours of effort he reached the top, jumped into the air waving his front legs and crashed to the ground. After recovering, he slowly climbed the tree again, jumped, and fell to the ground. The turtle tried again and again while a couple of birds sitting on a branch watched his sad efforts. Finally, the female bird turned to her mate. “Dear,” she chirped, “I think it’s time to tell him he’s adopted.”

Vehicle related to suspects It’s Open Season Abandoned vehicle related to robbery suspects On Sept. 7, Midway RCMP came upon a vehicle parked on Hwy 3 just west of Midway with its emergency lights flashing. A subsequent investigation revealed that the vehicle had been stolen at gunpoint in Kamloops. Additional information received by police indicated that two males had committed an armed robbery of a pizza delivery driver in Grand Forks, nearly running over an off-duty police officer, as the suspects stole cash and the delivery driver’s vehicle. Shortly after the thefts, the suspects were located on Hwy 3B near Trail after crashing the stolen vehicle and attempting to flee from police. Two male subjects were apprehended with the assistance of an RCMP po-

lice dog and handler. The abandoned vehicle in Midway is related to the two apprehended suspects who await court proceedings. Be careful inviting strangers into your home On Sept.12, RCMP received a report of a suspicious Caucasian male in his sixties riding a female bike in Midway. The man approached a house that is currently for sale and asked the owner if he could tour the property. The homeowner allowed the man to enter the house, at which point he quickly looked around and then left. Nothing was taken from

the residence, but RCMP would like to remind residents to be careful when inviting strangers into their homes. Bear lets itself into home On Sept.13, Midway RCMP responded to a report of a large black bear that was attempting to gain access to a home in Anaconda. The family living in the house managed to escape through the front door and left the scene safely in their vehicle. Police arrived and noted that the bear had already departed the area, leaving behind claw marks and a ripped door screen. Conservation officers were notified and will be following up with the impacted family. The public is advised to be aware of bear presence in the area, which is currently rated as high.

Accountant sums up statements CRAIG LINDSAY

School District 51’s board of education didn’t take long to meet once school was back in session. The trustees met on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at the school board office in Grand Forks and discussed several issues. Financial statements The board heard a presentation from Josh Widman from the accounting firm of Grant Thornton from Kelowna. The firm audited the financial statements of SD51, which comprise the statement of operations, statement of change in net financial assets (debt) and statement of cash flows for the year that ended (2014-15). Widman summed up the results of that audit. “It’s a yearly process that we go through,” said Teresa Rezansoff, SD51 board chair. “They come in and look and make sure everything we have done is accurate. We had a clean audit. We’ve never not had a clean audit, I’m proud to say.” Rezansoff praised the work of Jeanette Hanlon, secretary-treasurer for SD51, and district staff. In the statement of operations (year ended June 30), SD51 has an actual total revenue of $17,044,184. Most of that comes from provincial grants from the Ministry of Education, $15,670,621. The total expenses for SD51 are $17,193,609 of which instruction is the biggest at $12,186,109. In the schedule of operating operations, SD51 had an actual operating surplus of $1,727,291 at the end of the year. The accumulated surplus from operations at the beginning of the year was $10,569,119. At

the end of the year, the accumulated surplus was $10,419,694. The statement of financial position (as of June 30) for SD51 stated that the total financial assets were $4,059,872. The total liabilities were $14,313,719. The net financial assets (debt) is ($10,253,847). The total nonfinancial assets is $20,673,541. The accumulated surplus is $10,419,694. Community Literacy Plan Sheila Dobie, community literacy coordinator of Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL), gave an enthusiastic presentation about the Community Literacy Plan for the Boundary. She talked about highlights from the previous year and talked about the plan for the coming year. Dobie also talked about the upcoming Reach a Reader program, which goes this year on Oct. 7. Superintendent report Kevin Argue, SD51 superintendent, gave his month-end report at the board meeting. Argue said there were 46 teacher positions posted. There are 12 new teachers to SD51 with four positions still to be filled. Argue said the four goals for the achievement contract for SD51 for 2014-15 were: 1. To embed the inquiry process into teaching and learning throughout the district; 2. To improve student achievement in reading; 3. To increase students access and use of technology to deepen learning and authentically communicate their knowledge; and, 4. To improve the positive, social emotional connectedness of our students to their school experience through school ini-

tiatives supported by our health promoting schools coordinator. Support for those affected by the Rock Creek fire Norm Sabourin, Boundary District Teachers’ Association (BDTA) president, suggested during comment period that the board discuss helping out those affected by the Rock Creek fire, and, in particular, those with students. In all there were seven students affected from five different families. Sabourin also said there was a retired school teacher and a current CUPE member who lost their homes to the fire. Sabourin said they were able to “pass the hat” for fire relief and raise $2,400 at the BCTF summer conference. “That money will be sent to the CIBC account for the Kettle River Lion’s Club. We’re putting the word out to anyone to help.” Sabourin said there is also an account set up through the RDKB at the Heritage Credit Union in Greenwood for donations. “We’re (BDTA) still looking at other options for how we can help. We want the money distributed where it needs to be distributed.” Rezansoff said the board is waiting for the assessment by the Rock Creek/Westbridge Fire Needs Committee before further determining what can be done. “There are a lot of finer details being looked at,” she said. Rezansoff said they were very impressed by the job everyone in the community from caring and supporting each other, the communications and everything else. “It was an amazing example of what our community can do,” she said.

Response exemplary The Rock Creek fire posed challenges for numerous government and private agencies during and after the blaze destroyed homes and environments, but their response was, and continues to be, nothing short of exemplary. The fire was still threatening to travel further north on Highway 33, yet FortisBC was already on site assessing damage to hydro infrastructure and planning their approach to restoring power to those areas that had lost it. More than 75 power poles had to be replaced, and cables re-strung before FortisBC could even consider powering up that section of the grid. That they did so in such a short period of time impressed everybody affected by the fire, and, by all accounts have proven themselves not the “smart meter” meanies that many of us have painted them as. FortisBC may just have gone above and beyond the call of duty, and left a segment of their customer base feeling a little more like human beings rather than numbers on a spreadsheet. Telus technicians also worked hard during the unnerving early days of the disaster, as many of their customers were completely cut off from those outside the fire zone. Both landline and cellphone services were completely restored within days. Also responding to cleanup needs is the Ministry for Transportation and Infrastructure, which has been replacing the more than 28 kilometres of damaged livestock fencing along highways 3 and 33. In a recently-released brief, minister Todd Stone stressed the importance of a quick response by his government in addressing the matter. “This fencing is important for ranchers and farmers, to keep their animals contained and safe from harm, and it’s also important for motorists who are travelling along these highways, especially at night and during challenging weather conditions,” said Stone. “When some stretches of livestock fencing were destroyed in the Rock Creek wildfire, we committed to replacing the fencing right away.” Work on replacing the fencing is proceeding well, as the ministry continues to work with the B.C. Cattlemen’s Association in support of ranchers. The fencing is expected to be complete in late November. These are but three of the agencies that have helped restore damaged infrastructure in a timely fashion, and, in doing so, appear to have found public support in this challenging political and corporate climate.

Future of Baldy uncertain The Mount Baldy Ski Resort, which lies 20 kilometres north of Bridesville and Rock Creek and has long been a mecca for local snow enthusiasts, is currently at risk of remaining closed for the upcoming ski season. A press release issued by Vancouver-

based Receiver G-Force Group indicates that last year’s resort operator, Baldy Operating Corporation and its affiliate Baldy Capital Corportation, had made an unsuccessful bid to purchase the site. G-Force Group continues to work toward finding a buyer who can com-

plete a purchase at an acceptable price and secure a timeline for opening the 2015/2016 alpine season. At this point, the resort’s opening remains in doubt, much to the disappointment of local residents and students.

A team of 67 volunteers and forest professionals from local forestry company Interfor have officially helped set a world record. On May 20 of this year, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative partnered with local teams from 29 communities across Canada and the U.S. to set a new world record for the most trees planted simultaneously within a one-hour period by teams of 25 to 100 participants.

Guinness has just confirmed that the 202,935 trees planted by the 29 teams sets an official world record! The Interfor team planted 8,227 seedlings at two Interfor harvest locations in the Southern Interior, including at Windfall Creek near Greenwood, where they were joined by students, teachers and parents from Dr. D.A. Perley Elementary School. “As SFI celebrates its 20th anniversary,

I can’t think of a more exciting way to recognize and reinforce our commitment to healthy forests and sustainable communities, and to reaffirm that the actions we take today can have a significant and material impact on the future of our forests,” said Kathy Abusow, president and CEO of SFI.

There was a three-way tie in the contest at the B.C. Lung Association booth at the Rock Creek and Boundary Fall Fair this weekend. The contest was to guess how many jelly beans were in the antique jar. There were 352 entrants in the contest to guess how many jelly beans were in the jar. Guesses ranged from 105 to 17,032. There were 760 jelly beans in the jar and the four contestants each guessed 750 the closest without going over. Congratulations to Mikala Todoruk from Grand Forks, Lee Macri from Grand Forks and Dale Kellerman, from Bridesville. Because there was a tie, a name had to be drawn by an independent person. Four-year-old Mikala Todoruk’s name was drawn and wins the antique jar and jelly beans and the others will receive a consolation prize. Volunteer Director of the Boundary Area of the B.C. Lung Association, Michele Caskey thanked to all those who participated in the contest and to everyone who visited the booth and obtained information provided by the Lung Association.

Greenwood mayor Ed Smith, left, accepts a cheque for $1,500 from Greenwood ATV club president John Ingbritson. The club was grateful to the city for permitting the use of the city’s ballpark during the recent BC ATV Jamboree.

Live your dream

… Understand the role risk plays in your portfolio

IT’S ESSENTIAL TO UNDERSTAND risk in order to plan for

your financial future, because risk and returns are intertwined – you can’t have one without the other. In general, taking on more risks can provide the opportunity for both greater rewards and greater losses. It’s important to note, too, that investment risks go beyond market ups and downs.

SOME RISKS OF “LOW-RISK” INVESTMENTS.

“Low-risk” doesn’t mean “risk-free.” Here are two examples of the risks associated with low-risk investments. The first is inflation; if your returns don’t keep up with it, the purchasing power of your savings could be reduced even if you don’t make any withdrawals. The second is the risk of longevity – the possibility that you could outlive your money if your investment growth does not keep up with what you spend.

SOME RISKS OF “HIGH-RISK” INVESTMENTS.

And how about high-risk investments? Here are two examples of the risks associated with them. One is market risk – the chance that you will lose some or all of your money if the market value drops substantially. Investments outside Canada may also be subject to currency risk. For example, if you invest $100 CDN in a U.S. dollar denominated investment and the U.S. dollar declines by 10 per cent against the Canadian dollar, your investment will be worth $90 even though the U.S. investment value may not have changed.

Risk affects people differently, so it’s very important to discuss your personal feelings about risk with your advisor. Together, you can

build a portfolio designed to achieve your goals within your comfort zone. Here are three strategies to help you manage risk, while alleviating the effects of market fluctuations: 1. Dollar Cost Averaging: Investing a small amount regularly lets you buy at different price points and average out the cost of your investments. 2. Diversification: Investing in different asset types (for example, stocks and bonds), industries and countries can help reduce the impact of underperformance in any given category. 3. Keeping pace with life’s changes: meeting regularly with your advisor and adjusting your portfolio as you move into different life stages can help keep your investments aligned to your time horizon and tolerance for risk. Talk to your advisor if you have questions about fluctuations in the value of your investments. It’s important that you are comfortable with you portfolio, and that comfort can come from a better understanding of risk.

Boundary District Curling Club 2015-2016

Curling Season

Begins

Wednesday Afternoon Fun League Meet at 1:00 pm - learn skills and have fun. Thursday and Friday Evening League Teams meet at 7:00 pm If you are new to the area or an old hand at curling and want to join a team. Please call Lisa Baia at 250-449-2749 Why Curl you say? Any one can curl. Any age can curl. Easy to Learn. It is very affordable. Meet people and have fun. Play against great competition. Great exercise Too!

Club sets fall lineup The Midway Community Association has some great offerings upcoming this fall, starting with a “spooktacular” Halloween dance on Saturday, Oct. 30. Organizer John Hibberson promises a wonderfully ghoulish, adult-only affair that will see prizes awarded for the best costumes. A designated driver will be available to those wishing to enjoy an alcoholic beverage or two, and will transport party-goers to as far west as Westbridge and to Greenwood in the east. The fun begins at 7:30 p.m. and continues through the “witching” hour. Tickets are likely to be in high demand, particularly in light of Greenwood’s recent decision to cancel a similar event scheduled for that community. The following day is Halloween, and between 5:30 and 8 p.m., Midway’s community hall will be serving as a rest stop for those children and adults in need of a break from trick-ortreating or who just want to get out of the cold. Visitors will be ANDREW TRIPP

offered hot dogs and hot chocolate and encouraged to warm up next to a classic Halloween bonfire. On Nov. 15, the Midway Theatre will be teaming up with Nelson’s Allegro Dance Company to present River of Dreams, described as “a celebration of water in word and dance.” “Several years ago we presented a piece called River Song,” explained theatre principal John Hibberson, “a somewhat similar project to River of Dreams, but with a real conservation slant. This was when the Kettle River was under attack by a proposed uranium mine and threatened with the damming of two major feeder creeks when Big White wanted to put in a golf course.” He added, “River of Dreams takes a different slant, a purely artistic appreciation of the wonder of all rivers. It’s not a practical, utilitarian view of a biological necessity; rather, its message is to foster a reverence for rivers. I think it›s going to be quite good, maybe even memorable. I hope so at least.” Wrapping up the association’s fall schedule are monthly movie presentations of Jurassic World on Nov. 20 and Avengers – The Age of Ultron, which will take over the community hall on Dec. 18.

Awards night Oct. 15 COMMUNITY FUTURES Submitted

Community Futures Boundary and the Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce are pleased to host the 16th annual Business Excellence and Community Awards celebration. This gala event brings together individuals, business, government and non-profit organizations. “It is a great opportunity to recognize business excellence, while continuing to encourage the entrepreneurial spirit of the Boundary Region,” commented Wendy McCulloch, general manager of Community Futures Bound-

ary. This year’s event will also include the Exceptional Volunteer Service Awards sponsored by the City of Grand Forks. “We invite you to join us in recognizing the individuals who make a difference in the Boundary region. Award recipients will be selected by nominations from the community and announced on Oct. 15 at the Grand Forks Curling Rink,” she said. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served at 5 p.m. with awards presentations at 6 p.m. Due to seating limitations, tickets must be reserved in advance by contacting Community Futures Boundary at 250-442-2722.

HUGS S and G U SL If you have a hug or a slug, we’d like to hear it. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is that you keep it tasteful. Editor’s discretion will always be exercised. Simply email reporter@boundarycreektimes.com with your short quips, compliments or complaints; or you may drop them off at 263 South Copper Street in Greenwood.

Slugs to the person(s) who came into our yard and stole our grandchildren’s bocce game. Two small children asked, “Why would someone do that?” You forgot their swings! A thousand hugs to all the volunteers responsible for the fantastic Rock Creek Fall Fair. Your dedication does not go unnoticed.

Country music artist Lisa Nicole slipped into the Rock Creek Fall Fair last Sunday afternoon, and treated a small, but receptive audience to a strong set of both original and cover material. Born in Grand Forks, raised in Castlegar and now residing in Trail, Nicole grew up with country music, both her parents appreciating the likes of George Strait and Martina McBride, whose music would accompany them on family hunting trips. Upon completing high school, Nicole attended the Selkirk College of Contemporary Music and Technology in Nelson. During her two years at Selkirk, Nicole experimented with other styles of music, including R&B, yet she continued to be more attracted to the storytelling component of country music, and believed she was destined to pursue a career in that increasingly popular and very competitive genre. After graduating from Selkirk, Nicole moved to Vancouver, where she spent five years honing her craft while supporting herself as a restaurant server. She released her first single Not Over You to iTunes in 2011 and debuted the music video with over 15,000 views. Nicole’s first EP It Got Ugly, released in 2013, was written and recorded in Nashville with producer Bill Buckingham. It produced three singles, heard on over 50 country radio stations, and the

video for It Got Ugly has had over 15,000 views. Last fall, Nicole embarked on an ambitious cross Canada tour, which began with an impressive showcase at the Canadian Country Music Awards. In 2014, she won two Kootenay Music Awards for Album of the Year and Best Country Act alongside two British Columbia Country Music Association nominations for It Got Ugly Upon her return from her fifth Nashville trip in 2015, Nicole spent most of her time co-writing new material and performing at music festivals such as Sunfest, Rockin’ River Fest and the Canadian Music Week in Toronto. Recently, she has been working with engineer and producer Paul DeVilliers at his Rossland studio. Devilliers’ credits include production of eighties band Mister Mister’s best-selling album Welcome to the Real World and British rockers Yes’s 1987 album Big Generator, which reached number 15 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. According to those close to Nicole, DeVilliers is helping develop a new indie country sound in her music, which she hopes to showcase in her next recording, slated for sometime next year in Nashville. On Sunday evening in Surrey, just hours after leaving the stage at Rock Creek’s Fall Fair, Nicole was announced the winner of BCCMA’s Artist Development Project, which will provide her

with over $30,000 of support in the form of cash, prizes and a three-single recording package. Nicole will be spending several weeks in Toronto, immersed in a music program, as well as some time recording in Nashville. “It’s kind of like a $35,000 artist development deal,” Lisa Nicole told the Times before heading for the coast. “If I win, it will definitely change some things.” It appears Lisa Nicole’s career has just taken a huge upswing.

As Christina Lake teen Damien Alblas took the stage for the inaugural Rock Creek Fall Fair Talent Competition last Saturday morning, he did so with a confidence unbecoming of his 15 years. A musician since the age of 11, Alblas had come to the fair for one reason; to showcase an ability he hopes will one day lead to a career in music. His song choice was a very difficult Lindsey Buckingham arrangement, typical of the Fleetwood Mac frontman’s style, featuring fingerpicked guitar playing and high tempo vocals. Alblas pulled it off flawlessly, while demonstrating everything it takes to be a successful performer; terrific instrumentation, honest, soulful vocals and a magnetic stage presence. The Grand Forks Secondary School student began playing piano in Grade 6, following in the musical footsteps of dad Jay, another very talented musician who won the contest’s adult category. Through YouTube tutorials and endless practice, the younger Alblas learned guitar, inspired by the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd and The BeaDAMIEN ALBLAS tles. As a songwriter, he has great admiration for the work of Roger Waters, the founding member of Pink Floyd. “I love conceptual music,” said Alblas, “and Roger Waters for me is one of the greatest writers out there.” Alblas is already showing signs of becoming a superb songwriter himself, having penned such songs as Lunatics and Losers, Everchanging World and If All Goes Well, each of which suggests a maturity in Alblas’ view of himself and the world around him that is more becoming of someone much older. Alblas won the first annual Rock Creek Talent Competition Teen category with ease, but instead of turning the focus on himself, he chose to emphasize his gratitude to the fair organizers for presenting him with the opportunity to perform. As for his future, dad Jay insists his son will be finishing high school before setting his sights on a career in music, though he stresses that his family will be wholeheartedly behind his efforts. “If a career in music is what Damien wants, then we will support him 100 percent,” said Alblas Sr. “We are simply happy that he has found something he loves to do.” Alblas hopes he will be back at the fair next year to wow the judges once again, in all likelihood with even stronger original material.

Rehearsals for the 2015 BCSS presentation of All Shook Up are already ramping up, as director Sarah Tripp’s drama class rises to the challenge of bringing their singing and acting talents together for the musical’s Dec. 9 opening. Based on William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and set in an American Midwest town that has “outlawed fun,” the highly energetic production promises to be both funny and musically entertaining. Already, some of the characters are emerging as standouts,

mething like the above —— so I can change the date and title each time….

with the young actors obviously enjoying the parts they were given in this cast-heavy and challenging production. Tripp’s drama class is home to nearly a quarter of the entire BCSS student body, a testament to both the appeal of the program as well as the apparent imbalance in class sizes, a challenge faced by schools throughout the district. As is customary, there are two separate casts for most of the major roles, which will alternate throughout the fourperformance schedule. Playing the lead role of Chad for two of the performance is Grade 12’s Kevin, who, accord-

ing to Tripp, arrived in her class already prepared for the part, having learned much of the vocal arrangements before the school year began. When asked what he enjoys most about drama class, Kevin shows no hesitation in his response. “It’s definitely the singing. When I’m singing, it all just goes away.” Just two weeks into rehearsals, the production is beginning to take shape, though Tripp admits there is still much work to be done. All Shook Up debuts at the BCSS theatre on Dec. 9, with additional performances on Dec. 10, 14 and 15.
