A new Lantzville park could give beginner mountain bikers a place to test their skills. The District of Lantzville has put out a request for proposals to turn a community green space into its first mountain bike skills park. The idea is to build a 2,000-squaremetre skills circuit with a pump track, jump lines, log rails and a free riding area, to ramp up use of Rotary Park in upper Lantzville, and give beginner bikers a place to test their skills so they can make use of community trail systems. There’s nothing like this in the greater Nanaimo area, according to

it’s what people are looking for,” she said. Jenn McGarrigle, spokeswoman for Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club, called the idea great. Skills parks are a starting off point for new riders of all ages and a fun place for the more experienced ones, she said. “It’s a good area to go to practise some basic mountain biking skills so that you’ll have more fun once you hit the single track,” she said, adding the club believes multiple skills parks in the community are important to further the sport. “Skills parks like this definitely encourage new riders and attract them to the sport.” The request for proposals closes Oct. 12. The budget for the circuit is $39,000. The Rotary Park playground is also expected to be replaced as part of changes to the area. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Proposed park upgrades target bikes John English, a member of Lantzville’s parks and recreation commission, who says while most parks and tracks are set up for those who know how to ride, this will cater to beginners and be family-friendly. The equipment won’t be high off the ground, so kids will have a chance to learn and be challenged without being endangered, he said, pointing to places like Hinton, Alta., and Tofino as already having these kinds of skills parks. “It fills a gap for our park and it fills a gap for our younger population,” he said. Denise Haime, chairwoman of the parks and recreation commission, said the proposed skill circuit is about the community veering away from the traditional and capturing the interest of residents. The park is underutilized and this would be a way to entice people to come out, she said. “It’s fresh and it’s new and I think
Chamber of commerce leads petition to fix council relationships Nanaimo city council is broken and the only ones who can fix it are the politicians themselves, according to Kim Smythe, chief executive officer of the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce, which has helped launch a new petition. A citizens group headed by the chamber has recently started a petition on Change.org, calling for mayor and council to acknowledge that problems exist and to find solutions. Smythe said it’s meant to get council’s attention, but it will also provide a forum for citizens to indicate the level of dissatisfaction among the public. “It’s been 10 months since swearing in and we’ve watched relationships break down, discord grow, decorum reach new lows in chambers and councillors attacking each other online,” he said in a press release, later telling the News Bulletin that in 23 years of working with politicians and watching councils he’s never seen a situation like today. He believes it’s costing the city in money, reputation, pride of place and self-esteem and that there’s been an inability to get things done, including the core review. Mayor Bill McKay hired a facilitator in June to help address internal issues on council he said were affecting the ability to do business. The facilitator continues to work with politicians and is costing taxpayers upwards of $50,000. Smythe, however, said in nine months he has noticed councillors being no more civil to each other and if anything, acting less so. “We have to call for better or we won’t get better,” Smythe said. “We elected you to be responsible as community leaders. We’d like to see proof of that responsibility soon.” The petition was sitting at 65 supporters by press time Wednesday but quickly gaining signatures. Vancouver-based company picks up Nanaimo’s 911 calls

city chooSES cheaper option after RCMP moves office up island. By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
The next time you dial 911, it could be Vancouver-based E-Comm picking up the call. The Central Island 911 Partnership has hired E-Comm as the first contact for emergency callers, beginning this November. Calls are currently answered in Courtenay, a recent move stemming from the Nanaimo RCMP’s consolidation of its operational communications centre in the North Island. Mike Dietrich, the City of Nanaimo’s manager of police support services, said people won’t notice the difference with the transition to E-Comm, which already provides service to 23 other regional districts and communities across the province. E-Comm will pick up the 911 calls and direct them to dispatch

Robbery suspect scared off by pizzeria owner’s knife It’s probably never a good idea to bring bear spray to a potential knife fight. Nanaimo Mounties have Patrick John Desroche, 21, in custody after he allegedly tried and failed to rob Cousin Nick’s pizza restaurant. Desroche is accused of entering the restaurant, at 21 Front St., at about 1 a.m. Saturday, with
centres, including fire in Nanaimo and police in Courtenay. The benefit is a cheaper alternative than an RCMP contract, less expense for next-generation technology and the ability for the company to handle large call volumes in the case of a major emergency, according to Dietrich. E-Comm will cost $250,920 to the partnership this year with a one-time $16,000 fee. It’s a costper-call service that is expected to rise year-over-year to $258,450 in 2016. Nanaimo pays 45 per cent of the total expense. The second-lowest option had been Nanaimo Fire-Comm at $281,310 with a $174,266 start up cost, while the RCMP contract would have amounted to $719,900. “We are looking forward to it being a smooth transition and there won’t be any perceivable difference to the public in terms of calling 911,” Dietrich said. The City of Nanaimo is currently working with CUPE to find two affected employees alternative jobs within the corporation. The transition takes place Nov. 17.
a can of bear spray and a shirt pulled over his head. The clerk on duty happened to be the business owner and when Desroche saw the large pizza knife the owner was holding, he discharged the bear spray and ran off emptyhanded. Police caught Desroche a few minutes after the rob-
bery attempt and he’s being held in custody until he appears in Nanaimo provincial cour t Tuesday (Sept. 29) to face charges of attempted robbery, assault with a weapon and disguise with intent. Several customers in the restaurant were affected by the bear spray, but did not require
hospitalization. “Investigators have looked at other re c e n t u n s o l v e d armed robberies and do not believe Desroche is linked to them,” said Const. Gar y O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, in a press release. “Those files remain open and are being a c t i v e l y i n v e s t igated.”

A monument has been constructed at Jack Point Park in memory of the victims of the April 2014 shooting at the Western Forest Products mill in Nanaimo. Two men were killed and two were injured during the incident at the mill, which has since closed, and a wood viewing platform was built in collaboration with the City of Nanaimo, Western Forest Products, Snuneymuxw First Nation and the United Steel Workers Nanaimo local,
from Western Forest Products provided the materials. The union will provide a dedication plaque for the platform. A City of Nanaimo parks crew built the platform and upgrades to the boardwalk in that area of the park came with assistance of Snuneymuxw, he said. Marlene Lunn, whose husband Michael died in the incident, said it is ideally situated as it overlooks the old mill and is close to the Duke Point mill, where some of the workers were transferred. “It’s quite close to where they are. It’s about a 40-minute walk to get there. It’s beautiful, absolutely gorgeous,” said Lunn.

Corridor possibilities highlighted
I
iNput SouGht on Nicol street project. By GreG Sakaki The News BulleTiN
For one day, Nicol Street was the place to be, and residents hope that can be the case every day. Organizers were happy with Sunday’s My Street event, which was a block party, sidewalk sale and a forum for people to share their visions for the southend corridor. Heavy winds blew away the party mid-afternoon, but there were several hours before that for passers-by to glimpse the area’s potential. “Everybody got exactly what we wanted out of it,” said Sydney Robertson of Build a Better Block Nanaimo, the event organizer. “Lots of people came and they just experienced that Nicol Street could be something different.”
GREG SAKAKI/ThE NEwS BullETIN
Kate Evans, landscape architect with Golder Associates, discusses the Nicol Street corridor with residents during the My Street block party Sunday.
She said Sunday’s traffic-calming measures, with lane closures and manned crosswalks, made the street feel safer. “We’ve come a long way in how we look at traffic, not just in Nanaimo, but people all over the world are changing how we look at cars and what cars need and what pedestrians need,” Robertson said. Golder Associates collected survey data at My Street and
will tabulate it over the coming weeks for the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association, but feedback will continue to be sought over the coming months as part of the Terminal Nicol Re-Imagined project. Corry Hostetter, executive director of the business improvement association, said she came across residents who just wanted to be a part of the atmo-
sphere at My Street. “I thought that was just so telling of what the area is like and how much they want to see some change in the area, positive change,” she said. Her group is primarily interested in sparking economic growth in the area. “That’s what our mandate is, but we also want to bring people down to the city centre and have them enjoy it. We want people to feel safe when they’re walking up and down the streets,” Hostetter said. “Those are our only preconceived notions.” She said any major change in the area takes the involvement of all community partners and citizens and the city as a whole, and said that’s happening. “This really feels like a game-changing moment…” Robertson said. “It feels like we’re getting critical mass. There is enough support for this.” sports@nanaimobulletin.com

EDITORIAL
Council drama disconcerting If city council isn’t moving Nanaimo forward, then in which direction are we moving? Council’s conduct has been concerning enough that it came under fire this week from the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce. Contending that councillors are not honouring their commitment under the Community Charter, the chamber launched a petition calling for councillors to work together and work effectively. No matter how many people sign the petition, it doesn’t bind council to do anything. But it’s a manifestation of growing frustration among voters, among ratepayers, among the business community. The recent revelation that the city will continue to spend money on a facilitator to help politicians get along should concern any of us who democratically elected the men and women who control the public purse-strings. Having spent $50,000 thus far, Mayor Bill McKay is willing to double up on that sum, despite an admission that he has seen no improvement to council’s cooperation and comportment. If there’s been no improvement, then that sure makes it easy to calculate our value for dollar – zip, zero, zilch. Interestingly, $50,000 is twice as much money as neighbouring Lantzville spent on a byelection after its council disintegrated. We’re not advocating resignations and byelections, because that would only further hamper council’s decision-making at a time when its decision-making is already being criticized by no less an authority than the chamber of commerce. We’re simply calling for a more concerted effort. This petition might embarrass councillors, but it doesn’t put any obligation on them. Their obligation is, and remains, to represent the city, taxpayers and all citizens. Council doesn’t need to sit in a circle and sing Kumbaya, but it does need to sit in its semicircle once a week and take care of business, our business, the business of moving the city forward.

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair has promised to balance the budget every year of his mandate, should he form Canada’s first-ever socialist government. He will spend the rest of the campaign trying to reconcile this promise with the grandiose spending plans he has piled up. Meanwhile in B.C., Finance Minister Mike de Jong may have benefited from Harper’s lowball budget. In his first quarter update last week, de Jong reported that his February budget forecast is on track, with a $277 million surplus. This is despite a $300 million bill for forest firefighting, thanks to personal and corporate income tax revenue expected to be $374 million higher than budgeted. B.C. bases its tax revenue figures on federal estimates, and the ones they got early this year were clearly low. Understated or not, this is a nice problem to have. De Jong says that at this pace, B.C. will pay off its accumulated operating debt by 2020. The last time the province was free of operating debt was 1982. The big debt peak came during the NDP 1990s, with another spike from 2009-13 under the B.C. Liberals. u Tom Fletcher is columnist and legislature reporter for Black Press.

Parents seek answers on closure process To the Editor,
Have some trustees already made up their minds to close Rutherford Elementary School, rendering this whole time-consuming, emotionally draining and highly frustrating process a complete waste of time? Maybe school district employees could explain what their agenda is to all parents of the district. They could tell us why they think a feasible long-term vision for northend education is to cram Rutherford students into schools that are already at, close to, or above capacity. Why do they want to relocate 230 children, plus our vibrant Strong Start program, plus our Skills for Life program to other schools when ours is so viable right now? What reason does the school board have for revisiting the idea of a Rutherford school closure only nine short
years after the last process? The longer the school district remains a management/top-heavy institution, and the more years it bumbles and wastes funds and pours dollar after dollar into reports, consultations, and needless processes, the less parents in this area have faith in our public school system. The enormous growth in private school enrolment, French Immersion, homeschooling, Learn at Home and other alternatives prove that the school district does not encourage educators and parents to do the very best for our kids within the regular public school system. Instead we are left with yet another battle to keep Rutherford open and thriving, and we know it is not impossible.

Crackdown on sign waving wouldn’t hold up in court To the Editor,
Re: Sign-waving stance helps ensure order, Sept. 22. Regarding the mayor surmising he has ultimate power – that needs to be pushed to the law courts. I should know, I’m one of the people he’s kicked out of council meetings for silently holding up signs, although a year ago he wanted me to make up signs for him and hold them up. Contrary to what Mayor Bill McKay has hinted at previous council meetings, there has never been a court case to ultimately determine whether the person presiding at a meeting
has the sole authority to expel someone under the B.C. Community Charter. The North Vancouver court ruling McKay uses to back up the city’s opinion deals with a man holding up a sign in the foyer of the municipal hall. The case did not deal with signs being held up in a council chamber, which would be the venue to go to where taxpayers can express their views to the government they elected. I believe the mayor’s perceived dictatorial powers will not withstand a challenge in a court of law.
Randy Stearman Nanaimo
To the Editor,
For years now, one school facilities plan after another has been torn apart by protesting parents. Nanaimo lost an $83 million high school due to a past school board’s non-leadership by caving in to pressure of a few vocal groups. A generation of students could have graduated at that school if it went ahead as approved provincially. And the closure battles go on and on. And trustees still can’t stick to their guns. All these people want their school to stay open – close the neighbouring school instead. How about to keep your school open, get the enrolment up by sponsoring families of the two million-plus people fleeing Syria and area to come here?

ELECTION
Nanaimo News Bulletin Thursday, September 24, 2015
Paul Manly Green Party
I
The News Bulletin asked the four main party candidates: How will your party’s economic plan benefit Nanaimo residents? Please use examples on how policy will provide job opportunities in Nanaimo. Candidates’ answers to questions on the environment, medical marijuana and taxation will appear during the next four weeks, leading up to election day on Oct. 19. For more election coverage, please visit www.nanaimobulletin.com.
Tim Tessier Liberal Party
t makes good economic sense to build the sectors that benefit from the lower Canadian dollar – manufacturing, tourism, value-added forest products and cultural industries. Nanaimo has enormous potential in all of these areas. We have qualified trades people, a strong tourism industry, and a rich and diverse arts community. Our community has been negatively impacted by the boom-and-bust swings of rip-and-ship industries. The Green Party understands that in order to create stable, long-term jobs we must make Nanaimo, and all of Canada, a place where small businesses thrive. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the biggest job creators. We want to reduce red tape for small business owners, create a ‘Green Venture Capital Fund’ and enact ‘Think Small First’ legislation to ensure that when new federal laws and regulations are drafted, their impact on small business is taken into account. Nanaimo has the great quality of life technology companies love, plus easy access to Vancouver and Victoria. Excellent work is being done to encourage the growing tech sector here and it’s important that we support and expand those efforts to create clean, green tech jobs in our community. A skilled workforce is essential to these economic activities, but right now our students are graduating with debt sentences. The Green Party’s fully costed platform includes a plan to abolish tuition fees for college, university and skills training programs. Investing in our young people and making post-secondary education accessible will increase our prosperity, equality, productivity and economic competitiveness.
www.nanaimobulletin.com
A
fter a decade of Stephen Harper, Canadians are working harder and longer, but the economy is not working for them, and incomes are not keeping up with the cost of living. Our three-point plan will create jobs with the most significant infrastructure investment in Canadian history – $60 billion in new funding over the next 10 years. A new Liberal government will invest $1.3 billion over three years – 13 times more than the NDP – to create jobs and opportunities for young Canadians, which will help them get the skills and experience they need to get off to a strong start in their careers. We will create 40,000 youth jobs each year for the next three years by expanding the Youth Employment Strategy. This includes doubling access to Skills Link, which helps young Canadians at risk of not making a successful transition to the workplace – such as First Nations, Inuit and Métis, persons with disabilities or single parents – find meaningful employment. Liberals will create thousands of new co-op placements for students in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and business programs by helping employers with a portion of the cost to fill these placements. We will develop or expand pre-apprenticeship training programs to help young Canadians gain the skills they need to enter high-demand trades. Liberals will help those working to join the middle class by investing in essential social infrastructure, including affordable housing and child care, as well as providing more money to help families with the high cost of raising their kids.
Sheila Malcolmson New Democratic Party
Mark MacDonald Conservative Party
T
he Conservative party’s economic plan, based on lower personal and business taxes, is clearly working. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government is now posting surpluses, all while increasing funding to health care and other important social and infrastructure programs. The Conservative government has increased spending in 2015 with $121 million more for veterans, a $1.99 billion increase in Aboriginal Affairs and $2.3 billion more in total benefits for seniors. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government has lowered the personal income tax rate to the lowest level since the 1950s, which means individuals have more money to spend, and they do. This is good for business, as is the lowered corporate tax rate (13.5 per cent on profits), which gives companies incentive to grow, meaning more jobs. Canada’s economy is now ranked at the very top of the world, despite an unstable global economic climate. I have worked the past 18 months towards the announced commitment that a re-elected Conservative government will provide the required financial support to establish the foot passenger ferry to Vancouver. It is the single biggest immediate project that will have a positive, long-lasting economic impact on Nanaimo-Ladysmith. This will encourage commuters to live and spend here while earning their living on the Lower Mainland. I see tremendous opportunities for economic growth at the Nanaimo Airport for possible secondary manufacturing or aircraft repair. Local First Nations offer options for private sector investment. There are many other ideas. We just have to implement them.
I
f people in Nanaimo-Ladysmith have more money at the end of each month, as many will with the NDP’s affordable housing and childcare plans, we know a good portion of that money will be spent close to home. Raising everyone up a little is the right thing to do and it’s good for the local economy. I know, from 12 years elected to local government, that our region sorely needs a federal partner for the community’s infrastructure priorities. An NDP government’s stable funding for infrastructure and public transit will directly create jobs, a win-win for our economy and communities. By re-directing the tens of billions Harper’s Conservatives have handed the fossil fuel industry, the NDP will kickstart a transition to a sustainable economy. Renewable energy entrepreneurs here tell me they need a federal government that works with them, and renewable and energy conservation projects are big job creators. An NDP government will also work to reduce raw log exports and invest in forestry innovation, research and development. Processing more of our raw materials locally will keep jobs here. Tom Mulcair has also committed to increased tourism promotion, reversing cuts made by the Harper Conservatives that have hurt local tourism businesses. Eighty per cent of new jobs are created by small businesses and the NDP will support that job creation by cutting their tax rate by 20 per cent. The Retail Council of B.C. told me retailers and consumers will save money when we reduce credit card transaction fees charged to merchants, freeing up money for them to hire more employees.
Organizations combine efforts to host all-candidates’ meeting on social justice issues Federal candidates for Nanaimo-Ladysmith will discuss social justice issues in an all-candidates meeting, scheduled for Oct. 6, organized by the Canadian Federation of University Women Nanaimo and the First Unitarian Fellowship of Nanaimo. Joyce Hedges, a member of both non-partisan organiza-
tions, said social justice issues are broadly concerned with issues of equality in society. “I expect there will be discussion about issues such as health care, education, criminal justice, gender and racial inequality, charter rights, poverty, taxation and the rights of First Nations people.” There will be an opportunity
for those attending to ask questions of the candidates. Participating candidates
include Sheila Malcolmson (NDP), Paul Manly (Green) and Tim Tessier (Liberal). Hedges said Mark MacDonald (Conservative) declined the invitation to participate. The meeting will be at the Beban Park Social Centre from 7-9 p.m. Canadian Federation of University Women is a national
organization promoting equality, social justice and learning for women and girls. First Unitarian Fellowship of Nanaimo is a part of the Canadian network of Unitarian churches and smaller fellowships that promote the right of conscience and the use of democratic process in their congregations and in society

To get her company off the ground, Cheryl Foley was rolling and cutting the dough herself to make dog treats for distribution. She had one parttime employee who helped her, but since that time four and a half years ago, her business, the Foley Dog Treat Company, has grown and now has seven full-time employees and one part-time employee, besides Foley who works as the manager/owner. “It’s been a hard slog, but it’s possible – you just have to be really creative in the way you do things,” said Foley. “It can be done. We can have small businesses that manufacture products on the Island.” The company moved to its new location on 1945 Bollinger Rd. about a month ago. The new location is helping Foley expand her business. She ships products across Canada and now into the U.S. “I want to take it big. I want to make it the biggest dog treat company in the country,” said Foley. She said there are about four to five independent dog treat manufacturers in Canada. To create the recipes, Foley said she just started with basic baking principles, but altered the ingredients to be healthier for dogs.

Vancouver Island University has been selected as the site of an educational exchange program by Fulbright Canada. The non-profit foundation, mandated to select scholars in the U.S. and Canada and set them up for academic exchange, selected the university to host a visiting research chairperson in aboriginal studies based on the university’s work related to the effect of residential schools and its
support of aboriginal education. Michael Hawes, Fulbright Canada CEO, said a faculty member from a U.S. postsecondary institution will be selected, via an application process, and will spend a semester at the university engaging the community. “The idea is they would interact with students, they would give lectures, they would teach classes, they would engage with the community, but we’re also hoping this is an opportunity to
develop long-term institutional partnerships between VIU and some American universities who are doing similar things.” Ralph Nilson, VIU president, said it will provide an opportunity for recognition of the importance of the First Nations issues on the national agenda. “When we think about nation building and we think about the aboriginal agenda, as it relates to title and rights, it’s such an incredibly important public policy issue in our nation,” said Nilson. “This is going to provide us another opportunity to be engaged.” Nilson said the

Walk connects diabetic children
I
hELpS RaiSE money for research. By Tamara Cunningham
The News BulleTiN
Living with Type 1 diabetes can be challenging for Kaleigh Burkett. “Once at school I was at 1.9,” she said of her blood sugar level, shortly before puncturing the pad of her finger and checking the reading on the pump meter. It’s a low number that can make her feel lazy, cranky and whiney. “Sometimes when you are low you can’t always bring yourself back up.” Kaleigh, 9, was diagnosed in 2011 with Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease where her pancreas stops producing insulin. Something hadn’t seemed right said her mom, Courtney Battie, who took her to the doctor after Kaleigh complained of a stomach ache and had symptoms of a bladder infection. Tests showed she was a Type 1 diabetic. Now Kaleigh goes through a routine of carb counts, blood sugar tests and insulin, and for the fourth year, she’ll take to the track for the Juvenile Diabetes Research

Foundation’s annual Nanaimo Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes. “There’s lots of walking, there’s a lot of activities, bouncy castles and food,” she said with a toothy grin. Although, she’s also there to raise money for the foundation. The Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes is the foundation’s largest national fundraising
program, geared at raising awareness about Type 1 diabetes and money to help find a cure. The walk in Nanaimo began in 2001 and has since raised $272,000 for the cause, including more than $29,000 last year. on bad eating habits or sugar when it comes to diabetes, which he said is a common misconception. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune “attack” that doesn’t discriminate and can affect people at any point, he said, adding this event not only generates awareness, but allows the Type 1 community to connect and celebrate the work it’s done to raise money. Battie, who’s the w a l k ’s v o l u n t e e r manager, first participated after being told it was a great event for her newly diagnosed daughter to meet other diabetic kids. She said it’s a chance for kids to know there are others like them and that they don’t have to feel alone. The event takes place at the Nanaimo Rotary Bowl Sunday (Sept. 27). Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and the walk is at 11 a.m. There will also be bouncy castles, crafts and face painting and hockey lessons from the Nanaimo Clippers.

ocated near the banks of the Nanaimo River lies a building where complete strangers come together to have a little bit of fun. They laugh, share stories and educate each other all while the sounds of threading needles, buzzing saws and splashing paint can be heard in the background. It’s that kind of camaraderie and creativity that has kept the Jonanco Hobby Workshop going for more than four decades. “You make a lot of friends and you get to know a lot of people,” said Lil Kroll, a longtime Jonanco member. The workshop is nestled on the corner of Nanaimo River Road and White Rapids Road. It was created in 1974 when John Colwell along with more than two dozen other families got together and decided to create a space where they could enjoy their hobbies. The non-profit hobby shop features a wood and lapidary shop as well as a large area for quilting, sewing and knitting. This weekend, residents of the Harbour City will have the opportunity to experience Indian culture without having to leave the Island. On Sunday (Sept. 27) the Bollywood Masala Orchestra and Dancers of India: Spirit of India will be performing at the Port Theatre. The show is co-sponsored by the Central Vancouver
Island Multicultural Society. “One of the key ways that people really get engaged in understanding other cultures, one of the first ways, is food and music,” said Hilde Schlosar, executive director of the society. “You gain understanding through music and see similarities and differences.” The show was created by artistic director Rahis Bharti and features dancers, singers and acrobats. It combines a mixture of Indian and Western instruments, including bass drums, tabla, dholak, clarinet and more. Tickets range from $5-$40. Culture Days bring out residents’ inner creativity I By RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
Every day should be Culture Days according to Sarah Schmidt, executive director of the Nanaimo Arts Council. “The goal of Culture Days is to have every Canadian in every community enjoying culture and making
it a daily habit,” she said. This year Nanaimo’s Culture Days is Friday to Sunday (Sept. 25-27). Schmidt, along with Judy Nielsen, are this year’s ambassadors. “On a personal level I like breaking down the barriers between artist and consumer. I never considered myself as an artist, but I am creative,” said Schmidt. “Creating is so much more than traditional fine arts.” Culture Days allow
residents to bring out their inner creativity. Anyone can create and register an event at www.culturedays. ca. The Nanaimo Arts Council is hosting a mini culture hub at the Lois Lane Courtyard, near China Steps, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. People can help create a mosaic tile, which will be combined into a collaborative art project installed downtown. Supplies are provided free, but people are welcome to bring
beads, jewelry, tile or other pieces. The area will also feature the World of Métis at China Steps from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event features Métis history, artifacts, culture and more. On Sunday (Sept. 27), noon to 6 p.m. at Hub City Cinema Studio, 15 Lois Lane, people can participate in Film Jam. People are invited to bring equipment, props and their acting skills to create a short film in six hours.

With summer driving coming to an end, Driveway revisits some of the lesserknown all-wheel-drive vehicles from our automotive past. The attractive Toyota Celica GT-Four All-Trac Turbo is a favourite. The vehicle was not only attractive but packed a punch compared to the standard Celica seen in many high school parking lots. The intercooled turbo four-cylinder engine was capable of producing over 200 horsepower to get some air over crests in a rally. Thursday, September 24, 2015

Mercedes concept bends rules ‘‘ Aerodynamic Automobile). Says the prestige German brand: “It is two cars in one: an aerodynamics world champion with a Cd value of 0.19 and a fourdoor coupé embodying irresistible design.” At the touch of a button, or automatically on reaching a speed of 80 kilometres per hour, the Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA performs a fascinating transformation in which the captivatingly beautiful four-door coupé turns into an aerodynamics world champion: eight segments extend at the rear, increasing its length by up to 390 millimetres; front flaps in the front bumper extend by 25 mm to the front and 20 mm to the rear, improving the air flow around the front end and the front wheel arches; the

International auto shows have always been a veritable playground for the fantasies of car designers. The more outlandish and futuristic the concept on display the more wideeyed showgoers become as they trudge around. The difference today is that they tend not to be wild dreams but an indication of the shape of things to come within the next couple of years. A prime example in Frankfurt is the Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA (Intelligent

GORDON HALKETT PREC “What I promise ...... I will deliver.”
Some honourable mentions. Finally, Frankfurt offers a look at the long awaited premium compact Infiniti Q30. It’s a brave move into a very competitive segment. BMW chose the show for the world premiere of MINI Clubman – our new Driveway team member Gord Scott is currently driving it in Sweden. More later. Driveway’s Zack Spencer has already driven the new Smart Fortwo in Oregon and will report soon. We all got a look at the opentop two-seater version last week in Germany. The Jaguar F-PACE performance crossover is coming very soon and will challenge the competition in the now-crowded premium SUV/crossover market. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Nanaimo News Bulletin 33
BOUQUET To Old City Station Pub downtown. Best chicken wings, great service, great food and very clean. BOUQUET To trustees Steve Rae, Stephanie Higginson and Bill Robinson for visiting Rutherford Elementary School. It was a pleasure showing you how important our school is to our community. BOUQUET To Jean of the ‘Pool Babes’ for picking up my lunch tab. What a lovely surprise and very much appreciated. BOUQUET To the three ladies who came to our assistance when my husband fell in Save-On-Foods’ parking lot, hitting his head on our shopping cart. Although there was lots of blood, his scalp wound was shallow and he quickly recovered.
BOUQUET To City of Nanaimo which immediately dispatched an exterminator to deal with an active wasps’ nest near our water meter and public roadside, endangering anyone near it.
BEEF To Nanaimo gas stations. In Courtenay gas was $103.9. I come home and prices are $117.9. In Duncan ($107.9) and Vancouver ($113.9). Enough already, everyone that lives here is fed up.
BEEF To the manager of pizza place in Harewood for allowing delivery driver to race around after 10 p.m. in a low-riding car that sounds like it needs a new muffler. It sets off car alarms at night.
BOUQUET To Canadian Tire customer service staff and the young man who moved pallets of merchandise when I lost my keys. Also someone named Barry, who drove me to get my keys and back.
BEEF All the gas stations in Nanaimo who are charging the same amount as downtown Vancouver.
BOUQUET To Kim Boileau of KJ contracting for the donation of a fridge to Nanaimo 7-10 Club. We now have a fridge to keep our milk and juice cold.
BOUQUET To the kind lady driving the silver car with the Tinkerbell sticker in the back window at Terminal Park McDonald’s. You paid for my coffee and muffin. Your kindness made me cry.
BOUQUET To Scott Wiskerke from Roots and Shoots who donated his time and talents pruning trees at Hospice House and to Mona Richardson who volunteers hours of her time keeping the grounds pristine.
BEEF To the perpetrators with the 800 phone number who constantly, and maliciously, call four times a day and night to Canadian residents without answering.
BOUQUET To our three main political leaders who have taken the time to become bilingual – a good trait for Canada.
BOUQUET To our neighbour, Brad, for cleaning up the street signs at Tahoe and Michigan Way. They look great. BEEF To drivers on cellphones due to being a pedestrian and almost being hit three times in two weeks cause you cross the line. BOUQUET To the young gentlemen at Super Save Gas off of Bowen Road who took extra time to help me with my car troubles. Dirty Demons Towing towed my vehicle for free because it saw how bad a day I was having. BEEF To my foreman at work. You did not have to rat on your two workers. Keep it up and your card will be pulled. BOUQUET To guitar teacher Story at Natural Growth music. I love your dedication and enthusiasm. You make learning so much fun. BEEF To Nanaimo tailgaters. No wonder there are so many rear-enders here. BOUQUET To WindWalker Landscaping. Thank you for friendly service, fair pricing, and quick response times. We are customers for life. BEEF To all the dog owners who don’t pick up after their dog on our beautiful trails in our parks. BOUQUET To all the hard-working folks at Midas Muffler near Estevan Road. You got my minivan out within 20 minutes after the battery died on the morning of the first day of school.
BEEF To the nine cyclists I counted this past week, crossing intersections and causing traffic to stop or go around them because the red hand was up – not the green walking sign. They should learn how to read traffic lights. BOUQUET To all the people who worked so hard to put on a fantastic Harmac Union Barbecue on the long weekend. My grandkids had a blast. BEEF To the father of the little girl for chaining her to a tree during a protest at Colliery Dam Park. She looks confused and scared. BOUQUET To Colin of JB’s Auto Parts in Ladysmith, and his wife, who came to our rescue when we blew a tire on the Nanaimo Parkway. Not only did they stop to help but Colin changed the tire for us. BEEF What is the point of putting signs stating two-hour parking but you exempt residents? The point of this is to allow other people to use these spots.
BOUQUET To the young staff at Galaxy Theatre who were so kind, considerate and helpful to my husband and myself. They did not hesitate to come to our aid during a stressful time. BOUQUET To Country Club Centre and Howie James and the Howlettes. Wonderful music the last Thursday of the month.
BOUQUET To Grant, Al and Jeremy at Harris Kia for the exemplary customer service I receive every time I walk in the door. Thanks for all you did to ensure I got what I wanted. I love my alien green. BOUQUET To Sears, Tim’s Automotive and Central Towing for their generous donations to the Dover Bay Secondary School automotive program.

DEATHS
O
ur Lord has called home our wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Esther was born in Melville, Saskatchewan, and moved to Nanaimo in 1952 where she married the love of her life, Matthew Krastel, and enjoyed 56 wonderful years raising her five children. She was a remarkable seamstress and an avid gardener; she poured her heart and soul into her creative endeavours and sparked the imagination of those around her. Some of her happiest moments were spent on the beaches of Tofino where she was in awe of the west coast sunsets and stormy waves. Esther’s love for the beauty of nature was second only to the profound love she had for her family. She was a warm and nurturing soul who was always there when you needed her most. Esther is preceded in her passing by her parents Adolf and Mary Heiduk and her sister Audrey Warwick. She is survived by her husband Matthew Krastel; sister Eleanor Ziprick; brother Alfred Heiduk; daughters Corrine (Kent) Eccles; Desiree (Ron) Stockhausen; Janet (Tony Cummings) Krastel; twin sons Byron Krastel; Kevin (Brenda) Krastel; nine grandchildren Kristin (Jay) Stewart; Lindsey Eccles; Zachary Krastel; Adam Krastel; Brandon Ashcraft; Nicholas Ashcraft; Jaime Krastel; Matthew Krastel; Tabitha Cummings; and two great grandchildren Ava & Maddox Cummings. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation via www.donate.nanaimohospitalfoundation.com There will be no funeral service – a private family gathering will be held at a later date. Esther will be forever loved and cherished by her family and her memory will live on through them.
Karabinus, Elizabeth (nee) Law
Our Mom, Grandmother and Great Grandmother It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our mom and grandmother, Betty, in Nanaimo on September 15, 2015. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her over the many years. Betty was born in Innisfail, Alberta to Ada and Reverand Albert James Law on March 8, 1923. She lived and worked in Edmonton, Alberta; Mesa, Arizona; and British Columbia. She leaves her daughter, Shirley (Dave) Maudie, grandsons Greg and Steven (Nina); daughter-in-law Donna Fleming, granddaughters, Renèe and Adrienne (Lindsay) Finnegan, great grandson, Devlyn; and her son Gerry (Kristin) Fleming, and grandchildren Daniel and Kate (Alan) Walker and great grandson, Angus; and her brother Jack Law of Edmonton. Betty was predeceased by her husbands: George Fleming and Andrew Karabinus; her siblings: Allan, Joy, Cecil and Mary; and her oldest son Douglas Fleming. Mom loved being with her friends and family. She was a wonderful singer, delighting all who sang with her, reaching the high notes with ease. Even though she never became a nurse as she had wanted, she spent her life taking care of others and encouraging them to reach their goals. The middle chapter of her life found her in Arizona as part of the Karabinus family, and she greatly enjoyed travelling extensively with Andrew. For the last part of her life, Betty was in Victoria and Nanaimo. The family would like to thank the folks at Berwick on the Lake for making her feel at home. A memorial celebration will be held at Berwick on the Lake in Nanaimo on September 26, at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to CNIB, or a charity of your choice.

Bridget Mary Newstead With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Bridget Mary Newstead (nee Sweet) of Nanaimo, BC on September 5th, 2015. Bridget passed with her loving husband at her side where he stood so strongly for the past two difficult years. Her sons and siblings surrounded her with love in her final days. She loved performing in short plays and dancing with the many friends she came to love so much. She was close to her family and will be deeply missed by them and everyone who she touched. She was predeceased by her parents and eldest grandson William Gallant. (Jim) Survived by her husband David, Sons Jim (Shelley) and Byron (Michelle). Grand children Michael, Nathan, Taylor. TRIPLE-THREAT match headlines saturday’s card.
I’ve never been in a match like this where I haven’t surprised people.
BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN
Tables, ladders and chairs, oh my. Using those items as weapons will not only be within the rules, it will be encouraged in the main event of the Vancouver Island Pro Wrestling card this Saturday (Sept. 26) in Nanaimo. In what is being billed as a Canadian first, women wrestlers will be competing in a tables, ladders and chairs match. Port Alberni’s Riea Von Slasher will take on American competitors Krystal Bubbles and Mary Jane Payne in a triple-threat match to determine the first-ever VIPW women’s champion. Von Slasher doesn’t shy away from violent bouts. The last time she faced Bubbles, it was a casket match and Von Slasher bloodied her opponent’s face by stomping it onto a steel casket. Von Slasher also wrestled a ladder match this past spring and while she said “there’s more pain involved,” she plans to dish out more than she takes. “I’m not a huge fan of heights, so I like to throw people onto [the ladder]. It’s great to slam people onto.” She said when VIPW star ted, a women’s championship was never in the plans, so “it speaks

volumes” about the division that a title is being introduced. “I think I deserve [the belt], but it doesn’t always work that way. Whoever wants it more will get it,” Von Slasher said. “It would mean a lot to me.”
Promoter Brent LaPlante said Bubbles is more of a high-flyer, Payne is more of a technical wrestler and Von Slasher is a brawler. “I think all three styles will work well together to put on a great, great match,” LaPlante said.
Von Slasher wants to hit her powerbomb and curb stomp manoeuvres and win, of course, but she also wants the match to be memorable, and she said the women have it in them. “I’ve never been in a match like this where
I haven’t surprised people. The best thing people can do is underestimate me, because it makes my job easier,” she said. “But I absolutely hope that we’re able to pull off things that people go home in awe about.” Also on the card are two Nanaimo wrestlers, B.J. Laredo and Scott Steel, who will face Tony Baroni and Billy Suede for the tag-team titles. The last time the local team had a title shot, Steel turned on Laredo, but the two settled their differences with a match and have rekindled their friendship. “We’re back on board and heading in the direction of the tag titles,” Laredo said. In other action, Bishop will take on Mike Shreddz and Cremator Von Slasher will face Danni Deeds. The event is being held at the Departure Bay Activity Centre and bell time is 7 p.m. Advance tickets are $10, or $15 for ringside, available at Popeye’s Nanaimo and That ’50s Barbershop. Tickets at the door cost $15 or $20 for ringside. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Clippers showcase their team BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN
The Nanaimo Clippers feel they’ve got a good team this season, and this weekend, they get a chance to show it off. The Clippers participate in the B.C. Hockey League Showcase event Friday and Saturday (Sept. 25-26) in Chilliwack, taking on the Merritt Centennials and then the Coquitlam Express. It’s called a showcase and it will be just that, with college and pro scouts watching from the stands. “It may be in the back of our mind, but I don’t think it should be a distraction,” said Brendan Shane, Clippers forward. “We just have to play our game and we have to get the four points like any other weekend.” The fact that the games count in the standings will keep all the teams focused. “If they weren’t regular-season games you might try and go through [defenders] and do some crazy stuff yourself,” said Matthew Hoover, Clippers forward. “But you’ve always got to think about the team and remember that these games matter.” GAME ON … The Clippers play the Cents on Friday (Sept. 25) at 4 p.m., then take on the Express on Saturday at 1 p.m. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

raiders play biggest game BY GreG SAKAKI The NeWS BUlleTIN
The V.I. Raiders are getting ready to step on the field in the most important football game of the regular season. The Raiders visit the Langley Rams on Saturday (Sept. 26). The winner will have the inside track on a home playoff game. “They know how important it is and hopefully that will reflect in their work ethic this week. I think it will,” said Jerome Erdman, Raiders coach. The teams haven’t met since Week 1, a 22-14 Nanaimo win, and the squads will be much different now. The Rams were without their starting quarterback in the season opener, for example. One interesting lineup change for the Raiders is the addition of running back Coltin LaPlante, a dominant high school player at Ballenas Secondary. A lot of Raiders will be looking to make an impact in the biggest game of the season. “Big players make big-time plays in bigtime situations and I think we have plenty of guys that can do that this week,” said Travis Novak, Raiders linebacker. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Rules: 1) For the series of NFL games listed above, simply circle the teams you think will win. 2) Should we have a tie for the most games won, we will use Monday night’s game as a tie breaker. Look over all the football numbers published in the ads accompanying this contest. Select the one you think will be the CLOSEST to the DIFFERENCE IN THE SCORE of the game and write THE ADVERTISER NAME containing the score and the number itself on the line in the entry coupon. 3) The person picking the most games correct each week wins $100. If there is no clear winner after the tiebreaker game, the money will be split. 4) Contest is open to everyone except employees of The Nanaimo News Bulletin. Entries are limited to two per household per week (one per person).
