Faster growth, slower computers Six new classes of elementary students By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

The start of the new school year brought surprises to the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District this September. There’s been faster-thanexpected growth, and a painfully Mike Murray slow new computer system. The district received an unexpected bump in the elementary school population. Six new classes have been added across the district, at Harry Hooge, Yennadon, Kanaka Creek, Webster’s Corners, Blue Mountain and Albion elementary schools. “I’m guessing the growth will be 180 to 200 students at elementary, which is about twice what it was last year,” said superintendent Sylvia Russell. “So it’s significant enough.” The new students mean more money for the school district, said Russell. Districts receive provincial funding per pupil, now at $8,600 each, according to the education ministry. So 200 new students would bring approximately $1.7 million in additional funding. Declining enrollment has played a large role in the district’s financial troubles in recent years, which have resulted in millions of dollars in cuts, job losses, elimination of regular school bus service, and austerity measures, such as increased rental fees. Walmart wants to make the most of its downtown space in Maple Ridge by turning the former Target location into a ‘supercentre.’ It’s too soon to make any definite announcement, but that is what the company envisions, said Alex Roberton. “It’s our hope that we can bring

a supercentre offering to our customers in Maple Ridge, and that’s what we’re working towards.” The permit process hasn’t been finalized. Walmart announced last May that it took over the former Target location in Haney Place Mall. It was one of 12 leases Walmart acquired when U.S.-based Target left Canada after a brief foray into the market. In July, Smart Real Estate Investment Trust bought the local mall from Narland Properties, a Vancouver company.

SmartREIT was formed in April when Calloway REIT bought SmartCentres and turned it into a real estate investment trust. Maple Ridge council approved an earlier application for renovations to the mall. Renovations continue at the west end of the mall, even though Target did a major expansion when it took over from Zellers. “It does potentially go beyond cosmetic,” Roberton said of Walmart’s plan. A supercentre would include a

grocery section. Once planning is complete, the company will know when opening day will be. “We’re in the middle of the planning process right now.” Coun. Gordy Robson said the renovations are good for the downtown. “I think it’s a real positive renovation. There are lots of changes happening in the downtown. I think they’re good changes.” Another 1,000 housing units are being built in the downtown area. See Mall, 5

Marie Spetch visits Ridge Meadows Hospital three to four times a week as a volunteer chaplain. Tim Fitzgerald/THE NEWS

Volunteer goes Above and Beyond Marie Spetch, 90, dedicated to hospital patients By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

T

he face in the hospital bed is familiar, if aged about 10 years. “I knew I would get to see you again today, because it’s Sunday,” says the patient. Spiritual care volunteer Marie Spetch remembers the patient from a stay at Ridge Meadows Hospital about a decade earlier. She sits down next to her bed to get reacquainted. “And then we’re like old friends together again,” says Spetch. “After a while, you get to know people.” Spetch never misses a Sunday, and the familiar face to hospital patients is a super senior who visits patients at the hospital at least three or four times per week, for four or five hours at a time. It’s been her routine for the last 24 years. The Fraser Health Authority honoured the

90-year-old chaplain yesterday in Surrey with an Above and Beyond Award for her dedication to the hospital. Even when she faced her own health challenges, she has been at the hospital regularly. Sometimes she’s there every day, depending on how many people there want a visit. Generally she has 10-14 referrals at a time. She doesn’t place any time limit on her visits. Spetch isn’t going into the hospital trying to win converts. Hospitals are secular. “We don’t go in with any agenda. We go in and see what they want. “Most of the job is listening. If they ask for prayers, then we pray, and we make sure they’re happy when we leave.” She was raised High Anglican and later converted to Catholicism, but she will pray with a Buddhist, Mormon, Sikh or person of any faith. “Once we got into that hospital, we have no denomination at all.” Religion is just another tool in her toolkit. “It’s there, but we don’t use it unless we’re asked.” Some patients are weak, and just being

alert – trying to be polite company for a visit – leaves them exhausted. Many of them are in pain. Many more are lonely. Some will eventually become friends, and for some she bears witness as they pass away. “You sit with the dying a the hospice. You sit with people who haven’t got anybody, so that they’re not alone.” The job doesn’t get her down. “It’s another way of giving community service, and love. When you come out [of the hospital], it’s a relief, because you’re tired. But you’re ready for the next day.” Spetch lived in Quebec as a young woman, then raised her family in New Zealand, where she lived for 27 years and worked as a postmistress. In 1970, she moved to Maple Ridge, working at a school for the deaf, then with the corrections branch at a youth detention facility in Burnaby. Her volunteer work at the hospital only came after she retired. The award took her by surprise. “I’m amazed. I’m not used to that. I like working behind the scenes, for the satisfac-

tion of it.” And volunteering hasn’t been without its own rewards. “It’s kept me going. I love what I do,” she said. “The older I get, you’ve got to keep busy so you don’t lose it. My kids say I’ve lost it anyway,” she said with a laugh. She hasn’t lost anything, according to the hospital’s volunteer resource coordinator, Rhonda L’Abbe, who has known Spetch for about seven years. L’Abbe describes her as a “go-getter,” with more energy and initiative than people half her age. “She has been the most dedicated volunteer,” said L’Abbe. “She’s been a real asset to the hospital and patients miss her when she’s not here. “It’s who she is as a person – she lives and breathes volunteering.” Spetch doesn’t see herself quitting. “I love it. It’s people. “If you can give people hope, or make their day better than what it was, then that’s worth it.”

Low dollar means more visitors Province grants tourism funding By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

Visitors centres will retain their funding from the province, and with more tourists taking advantage of the low Canadian dollar, that will make hosting them easier for Kristina Gervais, executive director of Tourism Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. “We’ve seen a huge increase in the number of American

visitors now,” she said. With the Canadian dollar hovering around 75 cents U.S., the annual visits to her office on Harris Road in Pitt Meadows have increased from 8,000 to 9,300 per year. That 16 per cent jump is ahead of the province as a whole, where the number of visitors from outside the country grew by 5.3 per cent, or 234,000 visitors. Destination B.C., the province’s industry-led destination marketing organization, announced the three-year base funding model for the

108 community visitor centres it helps support. The strategy includes a new minimum base funding of $10,000 annually for the next three years for small and rural community visitor centres – like the one in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. There will also be an innovation fund available in 2016 to assist communities with projects that help them adapt to the changing needs and expectations of visitors, such as new technology. “That is great news, we’ve been waiting to hear this for

a while,” Gervais said. “It allows us to hire summer students to work the visitors centre.” It is part of the organization’s base funding, which also includes $35,000 from each of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Taking advantage of grant applications and funding sources like a visitor’s guide, the budget for the centre is about $120,000 per year – which makes it a small operation. Tourism is big business in B.C.

In 2013, the industry generated $13.9 billion in revenue, paid $4.5 billion in wages to 132,000 employees, and accounted for four per cent of the province’s total gross domestic product. One job in 15 is in the tourism sector. Whistler has an annual tourism promotion budget of $17 million, Tourism Langley gets about $500,000 per year, and Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows get by on about a quarter of that. “With the little resources we have, we get the biggest punch possible,” said Gervais. She said visitors come for outdoor experiences like Wildplay and horseback riding. “And we have spectacular

trails and parks here,” she added. In addition to the outdoors, festivals remain a key to attracting visitors, with the Caribbean Festival one of the biggest. A strategy this year is to sell Maple Ridge’s attractions to the people who live here, so that when they host visitors, they can entertain them close to home, said Gervais. “Keep your visitors here, rather than take them into the city.” They will have a booth at the festivals, and other events, aiming to promote area attractions to visitors and locals. “We can help you find some really cool adventures.”

People gathering in park Block party by Cliff residents newsroom@mapleridgenews.com

The people on Cliff Avenue are banding together so they have a voice. That’s happening on social media, and now in real life as people who’ve been following

the issue gather in Memorial Peace Park on Sunday. They’re calling it a Community Block Party and there will be fun and games and face painting and a bouncy castle in the park on 224th Street from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “It’s a party in the park with neighbours and Facebook friends. Rain or shine! says the

poster. And in return for bringing a food bank donation, you can get a hot dog. Several Facebook groups, such as Protecting Maple Ridge, Maple Ridge Council Watch and Maple Ridge Tax Payers Against Tent City, have been debating the growth of the homeless camp on Cliff

Avenue online. The event is organized by the Concerned Citizens Standing up for a Better Community. Some of the members of the Facebook groups live in their own homes along Cliff Avenue and have been dealing with the effects of having 60 or so people camping across the street for more than six months.

“It’s critical to have a strong anchor tenant in the mall, and a retailer who will draw shoppers who have been leaving town to get the things they need for their growing families. Some of the renovations include changing from Target’s red-andbeige outside colour scheme to Walmart’s blue

Numbers game Every politician and would-be MP or MLA knows, or at least they should, that polling numbers don’t translate into seats. Polling figures from Nanos Research released this week show the governing Conservatives, Opposition NDP and the Liberals in a virtual dead heat among decided voters, with support ranging between 29 and 31 per cent. But even if that was the last poll conducted before election day, it wouldn’t necessarily mean Parliament would split exactly down those lines. There is always a huge glut of people who are undecided up until the late stages of a campaign – some estimates put it as high as 25 per cent. In a close election race, the number of people who make up their mind just before heading to the polling station is likely far more than politicians or parties would care to see. It would be interesting to know how many people use polling figures to help them cast their vote. Unfortunately, releasing polling data has become a public relations ploy, especially with all the parties commissioning their own polls at various times. One firm hired by the NDP came back with numbers last week that said Liberal leader Justin Trudeau was trailing an opponent by 11 points in his own riding. A poll conducted for a national media company with a far larger sample size and different methodology found Trudeau to actually be leading by five points. Political parties hire pollsters to come up with numbers they feel will help them. Without a doubt, if the numbers don’t flatter them, they don’t publicize them. While stats heads might find the pre-election numbers interesting, the only ones that count are on election day. So what do we take from this? Voters can do their homework on local candidates and leave the polls for the parties to play around with. – Black Press

senatorial appointments. Quebec, Ontario and the small eastern provinces have consistently opposed any diminution of their dominant positions. With 22 vacant senate seats, it appears Prime Minster Stephen Harper is in no hurry to replace departed, retired or suspended senators and has announced it will be up to the provinces to devise a workable proposal, a highly unlikely event. NDP leader Tom Mulcair has historically wavered on the issue of the senate, but most recently said he is in favour of abolition. The other alternative is for the governor general to fill the vacant seats without recommendations from the prime minister, something many constitutional experts agree is legally sound, but would likely precipitate a constitutional crisis. If this all sounds too dry and too complicated, the topic of senate abolition or reform will likely be with us for a long time, just the way high-priced constitutional lawyers like it. Of course, there is always the possibility that Harper, if re-elected, could fall back on his Reform Party roots and work towards a Triple ‘E’ Senate: elderly, elite and emasculated. Oh, I’m sorry, that’s what we have now. Sandy Macdougall is a retired journalist and former city councillor.

This week’s question: Should the federal government abolish the senate?

THE NEWS/letters online comments Not both ways Jean Broder · Re: Concerns about new homeless shelter in Maple Ridge. I was born and raised in Maple Ridge and I was also homeless for 20 years. I think it’s a disgrace that people are reacting this way. They don’t want homeless people on the streets, but they want to deny them the services that might help them get off the street and put there lives back together. You cant have it both ways. • Beverly Jensen · Re: Concerns about new homeless shelter in Maple Ridge. What if more homeless people migrate to Maple Ridge and the Cliff Avenue camp doesn’t change one bit? This could easily happen and we’ve then dug ourselves into an even bigger hole. The mayor should be consulting the taxpayers before making decisions like this to further ruin our downtown businesses. • Peggy Papez · Re: Concerns about new homeless shelter in Maple Ridge. If they had been successful there would have been no tent city. They have succeeded at becoming part of a revolving door system than cycles the same people from the streets to housing and back to the streets again. Some of their clients have been riding this train for over 15 years and are still not self-sufficient.

Be accountable for grow ops Editor, The News: Re: Fire damages grow op (The News, Sept. 16). Maple Ridge Fire Chief Dane Spence made comments about firefighters attending these fires on an ongoing basis. As a taxpayer, this intrigues me. I’m wondering why taxpayer dollars are going towards fighting fires for indoor grow operations, legal or otherwise. I would like the cities and councils to enact bylaws in which property owners are responsible for any fires and damages as a result of marijuana grow operations, that fines be levied against them, and if they don’t pay, the amount is added to their tax bills. Bylaws, police and fire services should be compensated for their time when things like this occur. It should not be a taxpayer burden. If a person, home owner or tenant, decides to put a grow operation inside a residence, it should be mandatory that it be licenses by Health

Trustee not the same Murray BC’S ONLY FALL There are two Mike Murrays on the local political scene. Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board chair Mike Murray wants people to know he is not running for the federal Conservative party – although he shares the same name as a candidate. The school board chair wanted to clarify the issue, because so many people have asked him whether he part of the national campaign – as recently as the Terry Fox

Russell said school district administration is an easier job when the student population is increasing. “When the district is growing, there’s just resources coming in. It’s a more positive mindset, and it’s easier to do things when it’s growing.” Russell said the growth has arisen from new families moving to Maple Ridge, which can be difficult for the district to accurately forecast. “For some reason, a lot of the growth was at Kindergarten and at Grade 4 – there’s a lot of new Grade 4s in the school district.” Keeping track of them has been difficult with a new student information system this year, as the province converted from BCeSIS to My Education BC. David Vandergugten, director of K-12 education, told trustees Wednesday that MyEdBC has a slow processing time, though. “It’s a very lethargic system,” he said, explaining it might take 15 minutes for an administrator to simply search for a student’s file in the system. Teachers have been able to log in and establish their security settings, but they are not yet able to take attendance with the new system across the district. That is supposed to happen by Oct. 1.

Scarecrows downtown As if the longer nights aren’t scary enough, downtown Maple Ridge businesses are putting up scarecrows outside their shops. The creations are intended to draw people inside, where they can make food bank donations, Oct. 1 and Nov. 2. In return for a donation, customers can vote for what they think is their best-decorated scarecrow. The scarecrows will be provided by Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association free of charge to any participating business. Whatever business gets the most ballots and food donations will win a prize along with one of the customers who cast a ballot. “This promotion is multifaceted, and intended to display the individuality of our small businesses by showcasing their creativity in a fun, festive community event,” said the business association.

The school board chairman said he checked with “the other Mike,” before bringing the matter up, adding he does not want it to appear that he favours one candidate over another. “I’m not endorsing any candidate, and I’m not involved in any of the federal political parties. I wish all of the candidates the best of luck,” said board chairman Murray. He simply doesn’t want voters to cast their vote on a mistaken assumption – be it one that helps the candidate’s chances, or hurts them.

Change in priorities needed own local farmers can help feed us and hopefully we won’t go hungry. We had some kids on the ride, but next year I’d like to see more. Of course, there’s more to heritage than just farming. Heritage was the theme of last weekend’s Cycling GETI Fest. There was Jackie Chow lots to see and learn while enjoying the wonderful long-awaited downpour. Unfortunately, I guess thanks to the rain, the kids stayed at home instead of having fun at HUB’s bike rodeo, where we were hoping to teach them some road safety and biking skills. Not too many people tried out the wonderful ebikes we had at GETI Fest, either. Next year it’s going to be sunny. If you’ve never heard about GETI: it stands for Golden Ears Transition Initiative. Under the leadership of founder Gerry Pinel, GETI works to create awareness of the need to transition to a less fossil-fuel dependent future and greater resilience of our community. Many action groups each do their little bit to help create awareness and encourage change. Our HUB committee is one of those groups. We focus on the

transportation-side of things. As cities work to better accommodate cyclists with improved and safer infrastructure, cycling is rapidly becoming the mode of choice for an ever increasing number of people. Communities simply have to move away from always putting the fast movement of private automobiles before the needs and safety of people. Priority needs to be given to people on transit, walking and biking, and we urgently need to get serious about increased investment in all those modes. Cities can’t do it alone. They need help from senior levels of government. Which brings us, of course, to the upcoming election. Don’t forget to ask your candidates whether they will actively support a national transit strategy. Also ask if they’ll support the development of a national cycling strategy as proposed by Canada Bikes, including federal funding of a modest $10 per capita annually.

he third annual Bike to Farms ride took place on Sept. 6, with two groups of 30 each. We again visited Matt and Deanna Laity at the historic Brookfield Farm, Lorea McCready and her amazing vegetable garden, and learned what goes on at Red Barn Plants and Produce from owners Ken and Elke Knechtel. Visiting these local farms made me think about how important it is to treasure our local heritage. The passionate people who own and work so hard on our small local farms often have a long and deep connection to the land where they sow and harvest their produce, and to the animals that produce the milk, the eggs and the meat that we consume. Decades ago, local agriculture used to feed many more people in our community. These small businesses keep our heritage alive. Most of all, we need to treasure and support our small local farmers because they are very much needed to make our community more resilient, so that if, or rather, when California can no longer send us the many fruits and vegetables that they’ve fed us with for decades, and when it no longer makes sense to transport much of our food thousands of miles, our

TIPS FOR BUYING “While location continues to be a standard for purchase, more families are also considering a home’s proximity to services valuable to them: shopping centres, grocery stores, recreational facilities, and restaurants.” Michael Trites

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

What to keep in mind when buying a home By Nicolle Hodges

One of the first mentions of “location, location, location,” can be traced back to a real estate classified ad in the Chicago Tribune in 1926. While it’s still a mystery who coined the phrase, more interesting is that nearly 90 years later it still rings true. New or experienced homebuyers may begin looking for a home for a variety of purposes, including downsizing, relocating, or their growing family. Regardless of the reason there are important factors to bear in mind before closing a sale. While location continues to be a standard for purchase, more families are also considering a home’s proximity to services valuable to them: shopping centres, grocery stores, recreational facilities, and restaurants. Michael Trites, managing broker and sales associate at Royal LePage Northstar Realty says homebuyers need to be aware of what the likelihood of a major rezoning or transportation expansion occurring in their area of interest. “Rapid transit routes are planned years in advance so it’s important to verify what is planned by the various government agencies,” he says. “Rezoning to higher density housing in the future can increase usage of schools and recreation facilities beyond their present capacity.” He adds that most buyers have narrowed down the possible styles of a home that are important to them, so next to keep in mind is the quality of renovations. “Poorly done renovations often entail major work and expense to correct, and if completed without permits, can also be a material latent defect which has to be disclosed to a buyer prior to their preparing an offer to purchase.” An example of a material latent defect is a defect that cannot be discovered through an inspection, such as improper framing or building construction not done to building code and hidden behind walls or floors. Non-disclosure of a grow op could also be considered a latent defect due to possible mold or electrical issues. A patent defect is one that is discoverable through inspection, such as water in a crawl space, water stains on a ceiling, and cracks in flooring or foundation. From the inner workings of a home to how it’s staged, should there be a “top priority” checklist when looking to buy, and if so, what should be on it? Trites says the home buyer will likely have created their own wish list of ‘must haves’ and ‘want to haves’ to be included in their new home, and a REALTOR® will have their own standard clauses as subjects for offers that they

Trites says that once [a home] is paid for, it’s yours, as opposed to renting for the long term. Buy what you can afford and realize the market has factors that drive it, most of which are beyond our control.

REAL ESTATE IN MAPLE RIDGE & PITT MEADOWS

Invasion of the Coneheads By Mike Lascelle

T

here’s a new hydrangea in town and like the Coneheads of 1970s’ Saturday Night Live fame, they’re a little bit different. No, they won’t be giving out six-packs of beer and fried eggs for Halloween, but just about everything else they do is a little strange for a hydrangea. First of all, they are very easy to grow, which will be a pleasant surprise for those of you burdened with the ‘hydrangea curse’. Partial shade will no longer be necessary for beautiful flowers, as Hydrangea paniculata is quite sun-tolerant as long as the soil isn’t too dry. They tolerate the ‘hacking husband’ or ‘choppy significant other’ as long as they choose to do their bludgeoning in early spring, as this species blooms on new wood and performs better with a hard pruning. With the exception of the old-fashioned ‘PeeGee’ or ‘Grandiflora’ cultivar, they are not particularly prone to flopping over with heavy flower heads like those ‘Annabelle’ or Hydrangea arborescens types. Some might complain that the flower colour is a bit limited with its pinks, whites, greens, and deep rose hues (including bicolors) – but given that Mophead hydrangeas (H. macrophylla) change colour with pH and even ‘Nikko Blue’ can be pink in slightly alkaline soils, I believe it’s a moot point. Paniculata hydrangeas are also so incredibly hardy (Zone 3) that they survive in Winnipeg, meaning that given the right sized pot, they make great container specimens here in coastal British Columbia. A few compact cultivars ideal for pots include ‘Bobo’, ‘Little Lamb’, ‘Bombshell’, ‘Little Lime’ and the new ‘Little Quick Fire,’ with its white fading to pink blooms. That hardiness, coupled with stem rigidity, also means that this species is ideal for training into standard or tree forms with three- to fourfoot clear stems supporting the crown. These make great patio features where large trees might overcrowd and they can be underplanted with summer flowers or perennials.

Hydrangea ‘Pink Winky’ Standard and Hydrangea ‘Bobo.’

Most of the newer introductions are Proven Winner selections with ‘Limelight’ (elegant lime green flowers), ‘Quick Fire’ (early blooming) and ‘Pinky Winky’ (white / pink blossoms), proving themselves to be reliable over the past few years. A new introduction (besides the aforementioned ‘Little Quick Fire’) for this fall is ‘Fire Light,’ with large bicolor blooms of white fading to a deep rose-pink. Also worth looking for are some of the older varieties with more open flower structures such as ‘Brussel’s Lace’ (semi-dwarf), ‘Kyushu’

ON P U CO

(lacy flower structure), ‘White Moth’ (ages to pale green), ‘Tardiva’ (cream flowers) and ‘Pink Diamond’ (fades to pink). For those of you with lots of room and a desire for larger shrubs try ‘Phantom’ (huge non-floppy blossoms) or one of two French cultivars – ‘Great Star’ (also known as ‘La Vasterival’), with its large starry florets that resemble butterflies or ‘Vanilla Strawberry,’ with its spectacular bicolor blooms of rosypink with a white tip. So when you take into consideration all the benefits of Hydrangea paniculata – cold

hardiness, ease of care, sun tolerance, good in containers, blooms on new wood and tolerates hard pruning – it’s no wonder that it has become the top-selling hydrangea species for the past five years. Sure, it might mean a few more Coneheads in your neighborhood, but is that any worse than the guy who waters his garden in nothing but a Speedo, or the woman who cuts the lawn in her bathrobe and curlers? I think not. Mike Lascelle is a local nursery manager and gardening author (hebe_acer@hotmail.com).

Fostering, growing better athletes Emphasis should be on player development B y T i m Fi t z g e r a l d sports@mapleridgenews.com

T

here’s no better time to be a sports fan then when the leaves on the trees start to fall.

Hockey, baseball and football are in full swing. School is back, meaning the start of athletics. And none of it happens without the countless hours of coaches, both paid and volunteers. Sept. 19 to the 27 is national coaches week, and in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, the success of our local athletes hinges on the dedication of those looking to give back to their community. For Dave Lige, who has a degree in kinesiology from UBC and a masters in psychology, player development is his focus. As a minor hockey coach and owner of Inner Sports – an on- and off-ice training business – molding young players to be better athletes and people outside their sport should be the ultimate goal of any good coach. It should never be based on the win-loss column. The pressure to outscore your opponent at all costs will ultimately come at a cost to many young athletes, he said. Lige said coaches should shift their focus to developing and growing better athletes. “If a coach can have a healthy balance between process and outcome, then those are the ones who have the ability to have the biggest impact,” he said. “Development is about process, and process is about things you can control, and growth: ‘Have I helped this player grow as a player today?’” He said the key to gaining that balance is a fine line. There’s a difference between constant positive reinforcement and the ability to critique and give feedback. The best coaches are the ones who can deliver the message to their team without relying on the old-school methods of fear and intimidation. He said coaches need to get players working together and feeling valued and respected, but also held to a high level of accountability. “It’s not just kumbaya stuff,” said Lige. “People think when you are talking about being positive that it’s airy-fairy, but it’s not. It’s far

Tim Fitzgerald/ THE NEWS

Pitt Meadows Marauders head coach Matt Todd tries to create a fun experience, whether in games or at practice. from it. If you are nothing but positive with athletes, they are going to see through that, too. It doesn’t build them up, but rather gives them a false sense of self-esteem and self-respect, and that doesn’t encourage growth and development, either.” He said as someone who has coached both his son’s teams and his daughter’s teams, there are subtle differences coaches need to consider when offering feedback. First and foremost, he said coaches should be asking players what their own expectations are for the season. By getting their input, if offers the chance for a player to feel they have a voice on the team, regardless of their “status,” said Lige. “Whatever role they play, I want them to play to the best ability of that role. If they are a third-line player and they are a grinder and a checker, then I want the to feel value in that role,” he said. “A good coach makes those roles equal.” He said that can be easier said than done. Kids feel pressure from their parents to per-

form and coaches feel pressure from parents to deliver more playing time to their kids. He said those aspects of coaching have never been more challenging. He said, growing up, his parents would never have approached a coach and talked about more playing time. It was taboo. But the higher cost of sports, the year-round specialization and the amount of information available to parents has made coaching more accountable in some ways. Still, success lies in communication. “I think being highly positive with a highlevel of accountability is also absolutely fundamental, and I think that’s what separates the best coaches from the mediocre.” He also said there’s a slight difference in approach when dealing with boys and girl teams For males, respect is the key component for motivation “Boys can go on ice or the football field and can beat the snot out of each other, but they have a healthy level of respect because they competed hard and they’ve gained the respect

from their opponent,” said Lige. But for girls, more than anything, they are looking for a sense of belonging. “I go back to that aspect of the whole value in what they contribute to the team. You are maybe going to spend a little more time cultivating that culture in terms of off-ice activities, so maybe kids feel part of something. If a girl feels more part of something bigger and feels like she belongs by her teammates and coaches, she’s far more likely to feel motivated and engaged in that activity.” For Chris Sirovyak, another coach with the Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association, it’s all about bringing passion to his coaching philosophy. Playing junior hockey in Alberta, he used his competitive nature and his experiences growing up to give back as a coach once his playing days were over. Sirovyak also played competitive ball hockey for Canada’s national team, competing in eight international tournaments. See Coaching, 23

Carrier of the Week

Sports ‘Positive approach’ Coaching from 21

As a player or a as coach, it’s all about the love of the game and sharing it with teammates, he said. “I had lots of great coaches growing up when I was a kid and I had a lot of bad coaches, so I have pretty good understanding of what kind of influence they can have,” he added. “Coaches who were trying to lead by fear, or by bullying, never worked for me. People don’t respond well to that. When I experienced that as a kid, I would disengage and check out. Didn’t motivate me or inspire me. So why would it now?” He tries to inspire, motivate and teach core values, including how to act when you don’t win. “When you lose, you can’t hang your head low. You have to pick yourself up and keep going. Those are skills that they learn over a their entire playing days as a child. It’s a skill set you can take off the ice and shapes you for the real world.” He said coaches hold great influence over their athletes, even more so than some teachers, because they have a captive audience. So it’s imperative they lead by example. He said kids need to play the game because they are having fun, not because they have the expectation of getting something more out of it. He said he constantly reminds his athletes, and their parents, of how few actually go on and have a career in pro sports. Matt Todd, head coach of the Pitt Meadow Marauders football teams, agreed. He said his emphasis is on creating a positive playing environment so kids can feel like they are part of something bigger. He said that’s the great thing about the game of football. There’s such a strong element of team building and how to become a “family.” He never wants to scare kids away. And yelling never works, said Todd. “Whether it’s the game or it’s practice, you want the kids to be always having fun, and that’s what I want to pass down.”

Debunking running myths

I

previously discussed whether running on hard surfaces is hard on your joints. Will it wear out your joints prematurely? I also discussed how our legs have the ability to adjust to the softness or hardness of the surface by becoming stiffer or less stiff as the type of surface changes. The “spring” properties of our legs (resulting from the elastic and force absorption of muscle, tendon and cartilage) and the adjustment of our stride (varying the degree of bend in our hips, knees and ankles) are prime mechanisms we use to cope with different surfaces. Humans and other running animals are able to make these adjustments within one or two strides when encountering a new surface. Does research support the commonly held idea that running on hard surfaces actually wears out your joints, especially the cartilage in your knees, or

predispose you to other injuries compared to running on a softer surface? In one study in 2008, published in Foot and Ankle International, the incidence of tendonitis (inflammation of the tendon) was the predominate injury encountered and actually increased on the softer surface and decreased on the harder surface. In fact, the study showed that Achilles tendon injuries increased tenfold when running on sand compared to pavement. As far as wear and tear on the cartilage in the knee, there have been a few large, long-term studies done in the past 10 years on this and they all show that running does not promote premature arthritic changes, and may help prevent these changes in the knee. In the Stanford University study, which tracked 1,000 runners and nonrunners over 21 years, the authors found that the incidence of knee osteo-

More experienced runners are beginning to incorporate weight training into their routines, but not enough of them consider this preventative strategy, and most novice runners don’t either. Another strategy to help reduce the risk of injury is changing stride length. It turns out that lighter, faster, elite runners have a long stride length than heavier, non-elite runners. Where beginner runners tend to get into trouble is that some can take longer strides than appropriate for their fitness level and muscle strength and land with more force than their legs can withstand. So simply by shortening the stride length a little, this can help reduce the FRASER RIVER PILE & DREDGE IS PLEASED TO PRESENT force their legs endure.
