Kimberley recognized at UBCM Community Excellence Award in Leadership and Innovation C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Kimberley received a prestigious award at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities convention in Vancouver this week. Mayor Don McCormick accepted the Community Excellence Award for Leadership and Innovation on behalf of the City of Kimberley at the UBCM Awards Breakfast. Kimberley is being recognized for the development of the SunMine. “The community overwhelmingly endorsed the Sun Mine in a 2011 referendum to spend $2 million on its development. Scott Sommerville and his staff tightly managed this project with very little contingency, including the fussy grid con-
nectivity pieces at the end,” McCormick said. “This is truly a community success story, and I was honored to accept this on your behalf.” The Community Excellence Awards program is an opportunity to showcase municipalities and regional districts who “lead the pack”, take risks to innovate, establish new partnerships, question established ways of doing business and pioneer new customer service practices. Kimberley also received recognition at the AKBLG luncheon (Kootenay/Boundary Local Governments) for the use of wood products in community projects. “The log bridges so artfully constructed by PHOTO SUBMITTED Tyee Log Homes continMinister Fassbender, Minister of Community, Sport, Cultural Development, presented the Community Leadership & Innovation ue to impress,” McCoraward to Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick. With them is UBCM First VP Al Richmond. mick said.
Predators must be managed along with prey, Bennett says C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
In response to the new billboard against the wolf cull, which went up this week on the TransCanada Highway near Golden, (Daily Bulletin, September 24, 2015), Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett says the provincial government manages all wildlife species and a full understanding of those management practices is necessary.
“You can’t effectively manage wildlife populations by managing prey species, and not predator species,” Bennett said. “We have been managing prey species like deer, elk and moose for over 100 years in North America. But when one predator species is allowed to expand without controls, the balance that wildlife management strives for is destroyed.” “Wolves are social animals.

More than just numbers,” said Sadie Parr, executive director of Wolf Awareness. “Sustainable numbers do not necessarily mean that a wolf population is thriving nor functioning naturally. “Wolf social systems are extremely important. Their social bonds and kin-based families define what it means to be a wolf.” Parr argues that since recording began for the province of BC in
1976, there are a record high number of wolves being killed through hunting and trapping. Bennett disputes that. “Wolves are a special case because unlike cougars and bears, conventional hunting is not an effective control lever for the species,” Bennett said. “Controlling wolf populations requires use of unique management tools and to the person who thinks we can still
let nature “run its course”, the use of these special tools seems bizarre and cruel. We are 100 years past letting wildlife populations sort out their own balance. “Like I said at the beginning, you cannot manage prey species without managing predator species. Allowing wolf populations to expand to the point where they are destroying the balance between predator and prey is irresponsible.”

Adventure race postponed, block party still on! Submit ted
It turns out that all the training Otis has done for the Soggy Otter Adventure Race (SOAR) has gone to his head. Rather than put those registered for the race to shame he has decided to
postpone the October 3, 2015 SOAR and instead challenges everyone to get ready for 2016. He is competitive by nature and feels that this town needs more time to train — he’s looking for some more competition!
That being said, he wasn’t ready to give up his party, so the Block Party is still a go! Otis and event organizers along with presenting sponsor the Heid Out Restaurant and Brewhouse invite
the community to join in the Soggy Otter block party on October 3, on Baker Street between 8th and 9th Avenue. The block party will run from 1-5 pm and will feature fun for the whole family. The Heid Out
will be providing BBQ burgers, salad and a cookie for $9, there will be vendors onsite selling their wares, and some fun games to benefit the Canadian Cancer Society. Adding to the block party atmosphere, Mike Davis of All-Nite DJ and Event Services will be keeping things hopping with some good tunes. Local businesses on that section of Baker Street are also getting involved. The Choice will be setting up a side walk sale, and in addition to some good deals they will be “Socking it to Cancer”, a portion of the sales of their popular InStance socks benefiting the Society. The Bedroom Furniture Gallery will be providing shelter for our music services and event participants with their large tent for our use. Although Otis is an otter, he is an “eager beaver” at heart and is still looking for even more vendors and community

RDEK brings regional issues to UBCM Tre vor Cr awley
It’s not just municipal politicians that get to rub shoulders with provincial and federal counterparts at an annual convention in Vancouver. Representatives from each of the 29 Regional Districts, including Area Directors from the East Kootenay, are also in the Lower Mainland to meet with provincial ministers and advocate for rural issues at the Union of B.C. Municipalities conference this week. For RDEK board chair Rob Gay, there are a few things the RDEK is bringing to the convention, spe-
cifically to a few provincial ministers. “ These aren’t meetings where you sit down and hammer out a decision,” Gay said. “These are 15-minute meetings, so basically, you have a chance to make your case…and answer their questions. They kind of nickname it down here ‘speed dating’. “Often what comes out of it and what we look for is a follow up meeting with a deputy minister or associate deputy minister and they’re always present with the ministers.” From an RDEK perspective, a few issues include meeting with appropriate ministers

for Cranbrook municipal politicians. “I think if they hear it from more than one source, it’s helpful too, because they’re getting lobbied from all over the province on different things, so if we’re consistent in our lobbies, I think it goes a long way,” Gay said. In total, the RDEK had eight meetings set up with various government ministries. With the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, Gay wanted to address traffic issues in the Elk Valley, which can include backups from heavy volume in the summer months. He

that allows them to delegate the responsibility or the authority for making decisions if a piece of property could be subdivided within the ALR,” Gay said. “They can delegate that authority and they have—in our case—done that in the area around Wasa and we’d also like the same author ity around Fernie, so we’re going to speak to them about that. “It’s not about taking land in or out of the ALR—that’s not our authority—but we could have the authority to subdivide if the land were to stay within the ALR, so we’ll see how that goes.” Logging on private land in the Elk Valley and Flathead Valley is also a concern, he continued. “We also want to know about private forest land legislation because some of the private forest land in the Elk Valley, some very large sections of land in the Elk Valley and the Flathead Valley, are being logged from one end to the other with no sign of any reforestation, which, on private land, they can do but we’re not impressed with that because of creeks, wildlife and all the other uses of that property,” Gay said. Actual work on the Mark Creek project began August 20, 1956. The first task was to build a wooden flume 1300 feet long, four feet wide and two and one half feet high, to divert water so as to bypass the structural work. About 75 per cent of the creek bottom has been cleaned. Blasting operations under direction of Mr. H. Oslie, which have been carried on for two half days, are almost completed. The floor of the project will consist of 18 inches of rock grout, overlaid with six inches of concrete embedded in which are 65 pound rails at 18 inch centres with half inch ties every three feet. To date about 35 per cent of the forms of the replacement walls have been completed. No concrete has been poured

Football Canadians Sweep Series With Michel
Kimberley Canadians, winning two straight from the Michel Buffaloes in their final games of the Graham Cup round robin series, advanced to second place in final standings, one point behind Cranbrook Rovers who
clinched their title hopes with a win and a tie over Fernie United. Canadians’ home game played Saturday against the Michel Club saw them walk off with a 6-1 victory, while the return match on Sunday at Michel resulted in a close 1-0 Kimberley win. It was Michel’s first loss on home grounds this season. In the 6-1 victory Canadians finished the first
half with a 3-0 lead on goals by Billy Fairclough and George McFarlane, with two, and increased the lead to 5-0 early in the second half, Fairclough again scoring followed by Tick Beattie. Frank Mitchell scored Buffaloe’s lone counter on a penalty kick at the 18 minute mark. George McFarlane, netting his third goal of the game, on a pattern play with Beattie and
Dickens, finished the game’s scoring. Canadians handed Michel their first home defeat of the season, Jack Dickens providing the margin of victory at the two minute mark of play, drawing two defencemen out, pushing the ball between and running around to score a picture goal. The Democracy of Sinners W
hen you do something wrong, particularly if it’s something you’ve been working on for a while and have made a little progress, you may feel a keen sense of guilt. If you’ve ever fallen off the proverbial wagon, the sense of defeat and going back to square one can be a huge kick in the gut. The guilt and self– censure can be immense. I’ve felt it. You’ve felt it. For me, this feeling of guilt often morphs into feelings of shame and self– loathing. I say to myself, “You should be able to do better than that. What’s wrong with you?” Despite that, I’ve been lucky. I’ve written before about the deep, clinical depression I fell into about 15 years ago, partly because I used to be so hard on myself. Since then, I have been learning to hold these feelings in check and not let them spiral into depression. I have developed some skills in that area. But others are not so lucky. Guilt triggers a strong rejection and devaluation of the self. Psychologists say that this slide from guilt into shame and self–loathing is natural. One of the skills I learned is to try to redirect my guilt into another emotion — compassion. When I do something wrong these days (and that happens a lot!) and I end up feeling guilty, I try to spend less time on telling myself I’m such a screw up and more time on how, in light of my own failures, I should be more forgiving of the failures of others. If I’m such a screw up, shouldn’t I be willing to extend sympathy, empathy and compassion to others when
they make mistakes? Isn’t this part of loving others as I love myself? How can I judge others when I make similar or even worse mistakes? In this way, my guilt becomes a trigger to extend grace to others. That’s not easy to do. It seems much more intuitive to move from guilt into self– censure and shame. This movement from guilt to compassion for the failings of others takes some work, but it does become easier the more I work at it. It’s like anything else — it takes practice. Just like playing the Rev. Yme piano or learning to lay Woensdregt bricks, compassion can only be learned by practicing endlessly. Part of what lies behind this is G.K. Chesterton’s discussion of original sin. It’s not found in the Bible, and was first articulated by St. Augustine in the 4th century. Chesterton called it an “unattractive idea” which nevertheless results in flattening all human hierarchies. “Only with original sin can we at once pity the beggar and distrust the king.” Someone else has called this “the democracy of sinners.” Guilt is a sign of our membership in that democracy of sinners. We are all citizens of that land, and our natural inclination is for guilt to turn into shame. Guilt doesn’t instinctively trigger compassion, but it can if you work on it. In light of my own failures, I can learn to shift away from shame to compassion. In this democracy of sinners, life would be more whole if we could all say, “If I’m making mistakes should I not extend grace for the mistakes of others as well?” As I was thinking about this stuff, I
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
came across a wonderful sermon preached by Paul Tillich, one of the most influential theologians of the 20th century. He asks, “Do you know what it means to be struck by grace?” He continues by noting that grace has nothing to do with what we believe, or what we can do, or what we might accomplish. “Grace strikes us when we are in great pain and restlessness. It strikes us when we walk through the dark valley of a meaningless and empty life. It strikes us when we feel that our separation is deeper than usual, because we have violated another life, a life which we loved, or from which we were estranged. It strikes us when our disgust for our own being, our indifference, our weakness, our hostility, and our lack of direction and composure have become intolerable to us. It strikes us when, year after year, the longed-for perfection of life does not appear, when the old compulsions reign within us as they have for decades, when despair destroys all joy and courage. Sometimes at that moment a wave of light breaks into our darkness, and it is as though a voice were saying: ‘You are accepted. You are accepted, accepted by that which is greater than you, and the name of which you do not know.’” As we learn to practice compassion, we receive a grace which will transform our relationships with other people, and finally also in our relationship with ourselves. We need not beat ourselves up. In the final analysis, we are accepted—and then we reach out with compassion to extend grace to all the wonderful others in our lives. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

fter more than 40 years of elk hunting I still find myself learning things from these majestic animals. That alone is part of the reason I continue to hunt them, because just when you think you know everything there is to know about them, they surprise you with something you didn’t know. So, in this article I am going to share with you a couple of the lesser known secrets that I have picked up over the years. As with most hunters it’s been trial and error for me, with more emphasis on the word ‘error’ than ‘trial’. Those secretive old bulls don’t make many mistakes and at close quarters the odds are always in their favour. That,of course, is the way it should be and is one of the reasons a good representative of the species is a tremendous trophy. In our part of the country I don’t think there is any doubt that a good 6-point bull is the most sought after big game animal for hunters. Harvesting one usually requires a lot of time and effort, so I think the more you know about them the better your odds of filling your tag and stocking your freezer with with some great meat for those cold winter months. The Distant Drummer Bull elk can sometimes make a drumming sound, which is the best way to describe this little known portion of their rutting ritual. This is as a result of a rutting bull beating his penis on his stomach repeatedly, and can very often be part of a bugling sequence a hunter is engaging in with a bull. It’s very difficult to describe exactly what it sounds like, but it’s a sound like no other in the elk world — kind of a dull clunking sound that doesn’t seem to belong with all their other classic sounds such as bugling, grunting, chuckling, antler thrashing, etc. You do have to be fairly close to pick up on the sound but I’ve heard it, and my hearing is not

Rutting bull elk can make sounds that may surprise a hunter! the greatest anymore. So hunters with better hearing than I may be able to key in on the source from longer distances than what I could. As all serious elk hunters know it is very often the case that a bull will go silent during a calling sequence. When that happens self-doubt begins to creep in. Is he still there? Did I do something wrong and spook him? Did the wind shift just enough for him to catch my scent? All those thoughts were going through my mind a couple of years ago after about a half hour of hot bugling, back and forth, with what sounded like a very nice bull. Then silence followed for 15 minutes despite my attempts to get him to answer my calls again and reveal his location. Then, just
down behind me and off to the left about 40 yards, I heard that drumming sound I am referring to. “Could that be the bull”? I thought. I gambled, and inched my way down a few yards through the heavy cover where I could possibly see a little ways below the ridge I was on. I wasn’t disappointed. The ivory tips of his antlers were poking out from behind a patch of alders less than 20 yards away. His back end was fully exposed and it was there I got an up-close-and-personal look at a bull elk making that distinct drumming sound. His tawny hide and chocolate underbelly were dripping wet from the urine he was marking his territory with, and he was whipping himself into a rutting frenzy. The wind was still in my
favour and from previous experiences I had a pretty good idea that this bull was actually going to make his way up to the ridge I was on, in an effort to get directly downwind of where he had heard my last bugle come from. As a result of the thickness of the cover, I was still unable to determine if this was a legal 6-point bull, so I moved ever so slowly again to a position that was directly below the bull who was now ravaging one of the alder trees with his antlers. Soon after, he turned and walked directly up to the spot I had just vacated. I was within 15 yards of him now and he was looking away from me with no idea I was even there. I could smell the musky barnyard odor from the bull, and now I could clearly see those very nice 5-point antlers — during the rifle season in the high country they must possess at least 6-points on one side. This one did not, despite my wishful thinking to try and make another point appear. Only about 30 per cent of the bulls I have encountered over the past 20 years have been six points, so it was not unexpected, and I was still elated about having another wonderful experience with a good size bull, and the knowledge I had gained. I am absolutely certain that if I had not taken the time to investigate the drumming sound I would have never seen that bull, as once he got directly behind me, and caught my scent, the hunt would have been over in quick fashion. We all know how frustrating that can be. Next Week – Part 2 Some Things You may not Know About Bull Elk F.J. Jewish groups ‘astonished’ NDP candidate not aware of Auschwitz Canadian Press
HALIFAX - Jewish groups say they were astonished that an educated school trustee running for the New Democrats in the federal election claimed she had no awareness of one of the Nazis’ most notorious deaths camps. Jewish leaders were reacting to comments by Alex Johnstone,

the NDP candidate in Hamilton, Ont., who was forced to apologize for referring to fence posts at Auschwitz as being phallic on a Facebook page in 2008. Explaining her comments to a local newspaper Tuesday, Johnstone reportedly claimed that she didn’t know what Auschwitz was. Jon Goldberg of the Atlantic
Jewish Council says he found it difficult to believe that Johnstone, a social worker by training and school trustee, would not be familiar with the concentration camp in Poland that was responsible for the extermination of more than one million people. He doesn’t believe there was malice in the remark and in-
stead says it signals the need for greater education about the Holocaust. Shimon Koffler Fogel, CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, was equally incredulous at Johnstone’s claim and says it’s important that elected officials know their history so that they might work to prevent it from being repeated.

Ice host Hitmen as WHL’s 50th season begins Taylor Rocc a
Every year people throw shade at the Kootenay Ice. Whether its questioning the future of the team in Cranbrook, or doubting the club’s ability to maintain its impressive run of 17 straight post-season appearances, prognosticators and pundits seem to enter every fall doubting the Kootenay Ice. And this fall, as the Western Hockey League celebrates its 50th season, that hasn’t changed. The Hockey News predicts the Ice to finish 22nd in the 22-team WHL. “The Pipeline Show” -- a popular junior hockey program on TSN Radio in Edmonton -said, “maybe they’ve got a puncher’s chance,” and, “they’re up against it this year.” It’s not the first time Luke Philp has heard things like that said about his club. “We still expect to win every night here,” said Philp, who led the team in scoring with 82 points last season. “We’re going to have that same mindset going into [Friday]. “When you lose guys like we’ve lost and it’s going to be a younger team, things like that might be said. But we can’t use that as an excuse just because people are saying it might be a tough year. We’ve got to be ready to play.” More often than not,
the Ice do just that -they come ready to play. While the doubters voice their opinions every fall, two vastly more important consistencies also remain -the Kootenay Ice have qualified for the WHL playoffs in 17 consecutive seasons, powered by 16 straight campaigns with regular season records of .500 or better. It makes one wonder why people continue to doubt. “People saying you can’t do something, you want to do it,” said Zak Zborosky, the third-year forward who registered 28 goals and 40 points last season. “Yeah, we’re younger, but we can work hard. Luke [Pierce] is a good coach. We just have to stick to the game plan. We’re not always going to have Sam Reinhart to score that goal for us, but if we do it as a team and work hard, we should be fine.” Sure, there’s no Reinhart. There’s no Tim Bozon and there’s no Rinat Valiev. But workhorse goaltender Wyatt Hoflin -who created his own party-pack full of new franchise records last season -- is still guarding the crease. “Anytime you get doubt in your game, it pushes you that much harder to prove people wrong,” said Hoflin, who went 36-26-0-3 with three shutouts last season. “We still have lots of confidence in this team.

Entertaining crowds for the weekend will be four college squads -- the Capilano Blues, Ambrose Lions, Red Deer Queens and Kings Eagles -- through three days of play (Sept. 25 to 27) at Mount Baker Secondary School in Cranbrook. “It is an exciting opportunity to bring a different level of basketball to our area,” said Alan Nutini, organizer of the event. “For young players who love the game, they get an opportunity to see and meet some of the players at the next level.” The event is raising money for the East Kootenay P.A.R.T.Y. For Pierce, the
32-year-old native of Merritt, the chance to face a veteran, wellcoached Hitmen squad in back-to-back outings on opening weekend is just what his club needs to start the season. “It will be a very good barometer for us early in the season and a real good test,” Pierce said. “It’s nice to play them back-to-back so we can see the types of adjustments and improvements we can make going into Saturday and how well our guys are picking up on that kind of stuff.” This weekend might only knock two games off the itinerary for the Kootenay Ice, but it could go a long ways to
proving doubters wrong once again. Festivities between the Ice and Hitmen get underway Friday (7 p.m.) at Western Financial Place in Cranbrook. Kimberley Dynamiters back on the road Three-game swing visits Chase, Revelstoke and Golden Townsman Staff
The Kimberley Dynamiters face their second three-game road trip in seven days as they travel down the Trans-Canada Highway to take on the Chase Heat, Revelstoke Grizzlies and Golden Rockets this weekend. The Nitros (3-1-0-1) open the tour Friday (8 p.m.) in Chase before continuing on to Revelstoke (Saturday) and Golden (Sunday). Last weekend, a lack of execution cost the defending KIJHL champions as they dropped back-toback outings in 100 Mile House (2-0) and Kamloops (3-2, OT) before spanking the Sicamous Eagles by an 8-0 margin to close out the road trip. Captain Jason Richter will look to maintain his hot start to the season, having opened with seven goals and 11 points through five games. The Nitros next home game is Oct. 2 when the Grizzlies visit the Kimberley Civic Centre.

Luke Philp and Jon Martin know what is at stake for them this season. The two overage Kootenay Ice veterans, both undrafted by NHL clubs, have done enough in their respective junior careers to spike curiosity amongst a variety of pro clubs. Philp, a 5-foot-10 native of Canmore, Alta., attended Toronto Maple Leafs rookie camp last season, before taking a tour through Philadelphia Flyers main camp this fall. Martin, a 6-foot-1 native of Winnipeg, Man., attended the annual Young Stars tournament in each of the past two seasons, representing the Vancouver Canucks. Despite the opportunities to market their skills to big-league brass, both Philp and Martin find themselves without any concrete professional path awaiting them upon the completion of their WHL careers. “It motivates me a lot,” said Philp, the 201415 leading scorer for the Ice. “I know I’ve got to have a really good year if I want to get an opportunity to play pro in the following year. I’m going to use it as motivation to have a big year.” Philp was a dynamic force for the Ice last season, leading the team with 82 points in 71 games. With roster turnover bringing about a much younger squad this year, Philp will be leaned on as a catalyst for the offense and a leader on and off the ice. As one of six remaining overage players in Cranbrook, Philp remains a likely lock to stay with the Ice through the WHL’s 50th anniversary season. The future in Cranbrook for Martin is stable for now, but could change any day should veteran scorer Jaedon Descheneau, another overage forward, be returned from the NHL’s St. Louis Blues. In the meantime, the veteran Martin, who tallied 24 points along with 86 penalty minutes in 56 games last season, is just as motivated as his teammate Philp. “[The Canucks] mentioned they needed a guy like myself in their organization, but other than that, nothing really [in terms of contract opportunities],” Martin said. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Use the morning to the max, when you have a receptive audience. Meetings will go smoothly except for an issue that arises about who wants to take the lead. You could sense a power play starting. Reflect before you act. Tonight: Check in with an older friend or relative. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) A boss or a respected associate demonstrates his or her respect and caring. You might be more demanding than you realize and could cause a rift unintentionally. A situation is likely to develop in which you’ll need to handle a personal matter. Tonight: Relax with the moment. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You might have the best intentions, yet a partner seems to be defiant. This situation easily could develop into a major rift. Financial implications also might emerge. Don’t push, but support yourself in creating more stability. Tonight: Don’t get too feisty with a family member.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll open up to a different perspective that allows you to see the big picture. Decisions made with this mindset will prove to be excellent. Choose to go your own way, if possible, and don’t get up in someone else’s need to have it his or her way. Tonight: Watch a favorite movie. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Others continue to seek you out. You might need to screen calls and be less available. A personal issue arises that you’ll need to deal with first. If you don’t want to share what is happening, make it OK. Tonight: Go along with someone else’s choice. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Dive into a project in the morning. The more you get done, the better off you will be. Complications easily could occur in the evening. You will need to divide your attention. Before you say or do anything, make sure your motive is not anger. Tonight: Just don’t be alone. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Share your ideas in the morning. You have the ability to find
Tundra
excellent solutions. Understand what a loved one is asking you. At a certain point, you must focus on a project. Screen calls to accomplish what you want. Tonight: Wind down and relax. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Your creativity could be limited by a personal situation, but once it is handled, you’ll be able to handle nearly any situation. A friend could be overly assertive, making you somewhat uncomfortable. Make a choice that you feel is needed. Tonight: Celebrate the weekend! SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might not be able to free yourself from being caught in conversation after conversation. At some point in the day, you will want to isolate yourself, as you have a lot of ground to cover. Be ready to handle a loved one’s demands. Tonight: Head home. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Deal with a financial matter head-on. Reassess a situation that you feel is determined by its stability and financial ramifications. You will seek out answers to your questions, and you will
get them. Others gain more awareness. Your mood could swiftly change. Tonight: TGIF. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Complete what you must in the morning. You also might see one situation create multiple conversations. You could feel worn out by midafternoon, but you’ll greet the weekend with a smile. Take off early if you can. Make plans spontaneously. Tonight: Treat a friend to dinner. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might feel as if you can’t accomplish what you want. Swallow that feeling, and assume a positive attitude. Dive into your work. Once you clear out the todo list, you will lighten up. Make it OK to have a mood change for the better. Tonight: Cheer the weekend in. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: After five years of dating, my fiance and I have purchased a house and are in the process of moving in together. Everything is going well, except for one thing: “Walter” does not want me to bring any of the furniture my mother gave me. My mother has kept several couches, rugs and other household items in storage for me, and I love these pieces. Walter has expressed the desire to simply buy new items rather than use what was left to me, which I find disrespectful, not only to me, but to my family. I tried to compromise by donating many of these items and only keeping a handful, but he wants all of it gone. Annie, this is causing a major rift. I refuse to give away items my mother left me simply because he is being stubborn. Walter thinks I am being difficult and that dumping these things is no big deal. His cavalier attitude makes me even more upset. I would never ask him to donate an entire storage locker of items from his family because I disliked the style or wished for new things. I don’t want to resent Walter over this. Any suggestions? -- War of the Roses Dear Roses: We see that you have made concessions about the furniture and donated some of it. Has Walter made any concessions? It’s his turn. He should agree to keep most of the remaining pieces, provided they are in good condition. If he has legitimate objections, he should voice them. This may seem like a minor disagreement, but if Walter refuses (SET ITAL) any (END ITAL) compromise, then you are getting a small sample of every decision the two of you will make in the future. Please don’t assume his attitude will mellow. Get some premarital counseling so Walter can understand that his autocratic style is not going to create a happy marriage. Dear Annie: I am at my wits’ end when it comes to my husband’s behavior. Whenever my opinion does not coincide with his, he plugs his ears, walks away or filibusters. I have reached the point where I refrain from giving my opinion since every time I do, he accuses me of trying to start a fight. How can I make him see how destructive his ear plugging is to our marriage? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- Lonesome Wife Dear Lonesome: We know 2-yearolds who behave with more maturity than your husband. Is there someone he respects (a relative, friend, clergyperson) who would referee for the two of you and make it clear that married couples have a responsibility to listen to one another? A spouse who disagrees with your opinion is welcome to say so, calmly and respectfully. But plugging one’s ears or otherwise preventing you from expressing yourself is childish and damaging. If your husband won’t listen to any third-party suggestions, please get some counseling and see whether you can find different ways to cope -- or whether you want to. Sarah Ann (Sally) Noonan January 9th, 1945 to September 20th, 2015. With her beloved partner George Duffell by her side, Sally passed quietly and peacefully away after a two year battle with breast cancer. Sally was born January 9th, 1945 in Regina, Saskatchewan. Her family travelled by train to Victoria, BC where they made their home for many years. Sally eventually settled in Cranbrook, BC where she raised her three girls. Sally decided to move to Nanaimo to be closer to her girls and it is here where she met her soul mate and best friend, George. Sally spent her working life within the education system. Sally, a natural competitor, grew to love many sports throughout her life and made so many dear friends along the way. She had a true passion for golf and curling. She was an accomplished golfer and curler and spent many happy hours on the course or at the rink. She was a superb travelling companion. Sally was most proud of her three girls Christine, Carolyn & Julie and how “strongâ€? they all are. Sally took her responsibilities as a mom and ‘grannie’ seriously. Sal believed that true happiness came from giving. In lieu of flowers, memorials/donations may be sent to the Nanaimo Curling Centre where George and Sally spent many happy hours perfecting their triple take outs. A celebration of life will be held at the Nanaimo Curling Centre at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 3rd.
