Province commits $100,000 to the urban deer issue Gazette Staff

Rural communities in British Columbia such as Grand Forks will be getting some money from the provincial government to help with the deer issue. The province announced on Sept. 24 at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) that they would provide up to $100,000 for future urban deer management operations as well as strike a committee to help at the urban deer issue. “The opportunity to cost-share with the province on managing resident deer is a commitment that communities B.C.-wide have sought and worked towards for years,” said Gary Smith, chair of the Grand Forks Deer Committee. “One hundred thousand dollars a year is a great start, as is the formation of the Provincial Urban Deer Advisory Committee.” The recommendations from the UBCM flowed from an initial meeting with the province at an Urban Deer Workshop in January, which laid the groundwork for an increased awareness and understanding of policy, legislation, regulation and best practices in urban deer management. Participants at the workshop, which included Grand Forks councillor Chris Hammett, who sits on the local Deer Committee as the council representative, also agreed to create an advisory committee with both provincial and municipal representation to work together on urban deer management. The break down of the $100,000 has not been presented yet. But the money will go towards approved urban deer management and research projects. “The creation of an urban deer advisory committee will help ensure greater collaboration between municipalities and the government of B.C. and pro-

Horse shot and killed with .22 CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

A horse was shot and killed with a small caliber rifle in the Brown Creek area of the North Fork on Sept. 22. The 22-year-old mare had apparently got out of its owner’s yard. The owner, who didn’t want to be identified, said on Facebook that the mare was found in the driveway alive but unable to get up. Conservation officer (CO)

Dave Webster attended the scene. “CO service was called to the premise (saying) that their horse had been shot,” said Webster. “The animal did appear to have a bullet wound in it. I was able to determine that it appeared to be a very small caliber bullet; potentially a .22.” Webster said he thought it was very unlikely that it was either a case of mistaken identity or a hunting accident. “The wound was not con-

sistent with a hunting caliber bullet strike,” he said. Webster wouldn’t say if he thought it could be a targeted act. He said they have no suspects and no further leads. “If any other information comes to light we’d look at it,” he said. “The RCMP have been notified as well.” Cpl. Richard Lanz confirmed that Grand Forks RCMP are also investigating in conjunction with the CO service.

All-candidates forums scheduled Gazette Staff

Boundary residents will get a chance to grill the candidates on issues important to the area. The Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a couple of all-candidate forums for the candidates for Member of Parliament for the new South Okanagan-West Kootenay (SOWK) riding. The forums will be in Grand Forks at the high school on Oct. 7 and in Midway at the community centre on Oct. 8. Michael Strukoff will moderate both forums.

1910 The capital of the newly incorporated curling club is placed at $5,000, and is divided into 200 shares of the par value of $25 each. 1915 The Ford Touring Car sold for $530. No speedometer is included in this year’s model, otherwise cars were fully equipped. 1920 B.C. voters gave a big majority in favour of government control of liquor; only nominal number of towns recording votes in favour of the Prohibition Act of which Grand Forks was one. 1925 Some of the downtown sections are being ‘treated’ to cinder walks as well as the sections further out. It is in line with the policy of the city council not to build any more boardwalks. 1930 City council has designated Nov. 8 as Poppy Day for the sale of poppies for Armistice Day to aid the blind veterans. 1935 Plans for the construction of a new storage dam to supplement the present storage supply of the Smelter Lake for the city’s hydro electric plant made considerable progress at the special meeting of city council. 1940 Owing to the destructive elements of firecrackers, the local police are asking for a complete ban on the sale and use of them on the annual night of nights among the ‘kids.’ 1945 A vast development involving the expenditure of $50 million and employment of thousands of people on power developments and social security was outlined by Premier John Hart. 1950 Canadians will, in the future, be able

to obtain permits to spend on any reasonable amounts of U.S. dollars for all types of bona fide travel expenditures in the U.S. 1955 Opening of the new doctor’s office in Grand Forks this weekend takes place when James R. Henniger, M.D., begins his practice in the area. 1960 Rural residents gave overwhelming support in principle for the new hospital with 90 per cent favouring. 1965 The provincial government has taken action to prevent further riverbank erosion which has been a serious menace on the North Fork causing a heavy loss of agriculture land. The work being done consists mainly of blocking side channels which run wild during high water. 1970 Rotarians Bud Middleton, Bachan Buttar, Jim Glanville, and Harold McParlon completed the installation of teetertotters at the recently completed Rotary Kiddies play area in City Park. 1975 Grocery specials: chuck steak - $0.79/ lb., 10-lb. box detergent - $3.99, coffee $0.99/lb., 10-roll package of toilet tissue - $1.99, 10 lb. oranges - $1. 1980 A start has been made on connecting the first homes to the new cable television system in the city of Grand Forks, said Arno Hennig, of Greenwood Video. 1985 A figure of $800,000 was set by Grand Forks city council for the amount voters will be asked to approve out of the slag fund for a pool complex. The figure is half the total amount with $750,000 to be applied for from the Expo ‘86 Legacy Fund announced recently by MLA Jim Hewitt, and $50,000 raised by the Com-

munity Centre Committee. 1990 Close to 50 Grand Forks merchants have signed up so far to participate in the credit union’s Christmas Cash program, said Grand Forks District Savings Credit Union employee Sally Sofonoff, who is spearheading the campaign. 1995 A delegation appeared before city council asking that action be taken to alleviate foraging wildlife—specifically skunks, raccoons and deer—in residential yards. But the city doesn’t have jurisdiction over wild animals, and the SPCA only deals with domestic animals. The Ministry of Environment’s fish and wildlife branch, which has jurisdiction, says it doesn’t have enough manpower or time available to deal with nuisance wildlife. 2000 A $15,000 fiscal shortfall has taken its toll on service at the local library and the youngest patrons of the facility are the ones bearing the brunt. At a board meeting last Thursday, members decided not to fill the position of children’s librarian. 2005 The ribbon was cut Monday, officially opening Clifton Estates adult housing complex at the north end of Seventh Street in Grand Forks. When complete, the estates will comprise 18 units, employing a geothermal-type set-up to handle air conditioning and heating. 2010 The CFB Esquimalt Naval and Military Academy Museum was the setting for a rare event when infrantryman Cpl. William Edward Salikin received the Sacrific Medal. In 2006, the driver of an explosive-laden taxi swerved into a Canadian Forces G-Wagon near Kandahar, Afghanistan. The suicide attack wounded Salikin and two other solders, and took the life of Canadian diplomat Glyn Berry. Salikin, a native of Grand Forks, has been rehabilitating from wounds suffered to his arm, wrist, neck and head.

YOUR NEWS VIEW

Completely incomprehensible Losing an animal is never easy. It doesn’t take long for them to become just like family. An incident up the North Fork saw the death of a 22-year-old mare, which was shot by what appears to be a small caliber rifle. Police and the conservation office are still investigating the incident but at this time there aren’t a whole lot of other details. Conservation Officer Dave Webster believes it wasn’t a case of mistaken identity or a hunting accident. It would be awful to think that the incident was a targeted attack. There doesn’t appear to be many other options. Someone shot that firearm. If this was indeed an accident, whoever shot that gun should sign up for Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE) training right now. If it was deliberate, what could the family of the horse, or the horse herself, have possibly done to you to warrant shooting an innocent animal? And with a calibre of gun that likely caused her a great deal of pain! Shame, shame, shame.

Reckonings DELLA MALLETTE This week the Gazette is pleased to present A Day in the Life, our third annual feature of photos taken on a single day throughout the Grand Forks area. We can’t photograph every corner of the community every year, but we try to focus on photos that we didn’t get to in previous years. We hope you enjoy this year’s peek at a day in the life of Grand Forks. I know what a day in the life of Grand Forks has been like over time: my family moved here when I was in Grade 5, and except for a few years at college in Vancouver, I’ve lived here ever since. On that day when we came to Grand Forks all those years ago, we didn’t take Spraggett Bridge into Almond Gardens to our new home. We took Lover’s Lane (19th Street)

down to Cooper Bridge, up and around Bader’s Corner and past Joe Girl’s beach, and ending our drive at “the corner with the mailboxes.” Anyone my age or older who has lived here a few decades (okay, maybe more) will recall exactly where I mean: where Almond Gardens Road veers south sat a group of mailboxes. Of the style that now grace yards of Baby Boomers decorating with a “retro” look, the mailboxes were metal, weathered, dented, and proudly sported a flag that would be put up to indicate “You’ve Got Mail”—no ding, or some such swooshing sound you think is cute, as a message lands or leaves your computerized mailbox. Right at that corner sat the Androsoff household; to the left was the trailer court where we lived for a few years; straight ahead was McIver’s and Zibin’s; and to the left was a long driveway. At the end of that driveway, to the right, lived Postnikoffs; to the left was where my grandparents, Rachel and Wilfred Gallant, lived. (What’s the use

of having my own column if I can’t give a shout-out to family once in a while?) If we had come into Grand Forks from the west, we would have crossed Carson Bridge, which spanned the Kettle by the Danville border crossing. As kids, we would ride our bikes over and across the border. It was an easy ride, and certainly easier to cross the border then. The schools were the same and a few of my teachers are still here too. To an elementary school student, teachers are already old. So hello, Mr. Tournemille and Mr. Starchuk— you haven’t changed a bit! There are photos from the library, art gallery and museum in this year’s Day in the Life—all facilities that have flourished in different surroundings. The library was once in an old building in Gyro Park and featured a book-crammed, smoke-filled basement that was the stuff movies are made of. No, the place wasn’t on fire—people smoked inside then, and librarian

Monica Simcox was a smoker. I can picture Monica to this day, sitting at her desk with that ever-present cigarette between her fingers. The Boundary Museum would be housed in the old library when a new library was built in its present location. The art gallery would take over the basement of the new library. Today each operates out of its own location and certainly seem to be flourishing. We have photos from the BMX track this year—that’s new from when I was a kid. We also have a photo from the aquatic centre. We can be very proud of both facilities, and more. You’ll find photos of animals, and no, they’re certainly not new from back in the day. There do seem to be a lot more deer downtown now, though, and I can’t say I remember seeing too many alpacas grinning across the fence line. For sure, there have always been cows in Grand Forks and area.

The 97 per cent claim discredited

Editor, The Gazette: Spencer Tracy raises some excellent points regarding water meter RF radiation hysteria (“It’s time we moved forward”, Gazette, Sept. 23). I am in total agreement with most of his points, including directing energy to issues that deserve more attention. Unfortunately he also mentions climate change and the oft-quoted “97 per cent of climate scientists agree that humans are warming the planet.” The 97 per cent claim has been discredited by many authors. It was largely based on the poorly worded Zimmerman/Doran survey, which represented the views of just 79 selected climate scien-

tists; and the now infamous Cook et al Australian paper, which has been thoroughly debunked due to inaccuracies and procedural errors. An article in the Wall Street Journal–“The myth of the climate change 97 per cent” (Joseph Bast and Roy Spencer, May 26, 2014) summarizes the origins of the dubious 97 per cent claim. George Mason University published a survey in 2012 in which only 39.5 per cent of 1,854 American Meteorological Society respondents thought man-made global warming is dangerous. But perhaps more significant is the Global Warming Petition Project of La Jolla, California, which has

by far the most signatories of any of the climate change surveys. In it, more than 31,000 scientists, including over 9,000 with PhDs, state, “There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing, or will in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate.” There are credible proponents on both sides of the climate debate, but to claim that a consensus of climate scientists believe that humans are harmfully heating the planet is both disingenuous and an affront to the scientific process. Michael Lederhouse, Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette: An open letter to Rick Mercer: We invite you to have a look at our Voter Challenge Rant: youtube.com/watch?v=B4RRILMItiQ &feature=youtu.be. This is a summons to you to come and bless the winning community of the Community Voters Challenge (including the City of Grand Forks) with your presence

with a celebratory rant after the federal 2015 Canadian election. The objective of the challenge is to become the municipality which sees the greatest increase in voter turnout (measured by percentage) since the last federal election. Eleven municipal governments within the Kootenay-Columbia and South Okanagan-West Kootenay ridings have voted to partake

in the challenge already. Having you visit the winning community would be the cherry on top—and with a little luck it will catch on across the country! Thank you for your consideration—and let us know what you think of the impersonation! Kiara Lynch and Mike Chapman, Nelson, B.C. on behalf of the Community Voters Challenge

Please check out our rant, Mr. Mercer

Day in the Life Photographer Erin Perkins met a few at Jerseyland, and I came across one on my way home that day. I say one, because there were several in the field but only one on the road. We have published many photos of cows over the years, particularly when Jim Holtz moved to the North Fork area and took a job reporting with the Gazette. He un-

Continued from page A4

derstood that cows travel to their home field from the higher range, and accepted the cows on the road as they made their pilgrimage— but he would get so irate when he found cows on the road because a farmer didn’t mend his fences, or close his gates. Jim figured if he took lots of photos and brought this problem to light, the farmers might be held accountable. (I understand, I’ve almost hit a cow

www.grandforksgazette.ca A5

more than once on the way home.) All of Jim’s photos did get action. We now have, near the North Fork- Brown Creek junction, a metal pole with a bright yellow diamond perched atop—and smack dab on that glowing yellow, a picture of a cow. So, Jim, in your memory there’s a photo of a Highlander in the Day in the Life pages. This cow’s for you.

Vote with Cecil in mind

Editor, The Gazette: It is a sombre reflection on our times and attitude to “economic” viability, when trophy hunting is regarded as a pillar of a state’s financial security. Barry Brandow’s letter (The Gazette, Sept. 23), rightly deplores African nations having reduced resources for conservation but disregards the underlying evils. The same can also be said of Canada. Fundamental problems are the same on both continents: For centuries foreign interests have muscled their ways onto other peoples’ home places and exploited them; gold, silver, diamonds, copper, bauxite, timber, water, fish, coal, gas and oil and a myriad of other natural resources, alongside exploiting local labour, land, water, lax regulatory systems to develop commodities for export; tea, coffee, fruit, cut flowers, for example, in Africa. And wheat, coal, fish, timber and lumber, oil and gas and so on, in Canada. Foreign powers even “owned” their lands until they gained “independence” which means stripped to the bone and discarded. Canada continues to be in such straits. Investments on both continents have achieved astonishing levels of return, often with massive taxpayer support, lax taxation and military protection—although a dismaying paucity of return reached the natives of such places. On the contrary; there continues a head-long rush of foreign capital to “develop” resources and land, at the direct expense of the native populations and the common environment. In almost all cases, huge returns on investment have been “repatriated”—shipped off-shore, surely the antithesis of economic development. We are now faced with the dubious prospect of more off-shore capital being shipped in to privatise and own “public” services. Without our permission, as usual. A future of dwindling natural resources, decreased public funding of public services (privatization), the vagaries of climate change and so on, signal a grim future. Towering above all of this is the history of slavery—surely the most egregious resource exploitation in all of history and, of course, fundamental considerations in the plights of both contemporary Africa and the United States. Centuries of African slavery will forever be a dark stain in the annals of human shame and, while Canadian treatment of its own First Nations is on a different page in human misery, it remains unlikely that we immigrants will ever be able to make satisfactory amends. So what has this got to do with Cecil the Lion and economic development? A lot. When the resource is cowardly and illegally eliminated, it leaves one less “resource” on which to build an economic base—a future; tourism in corrupt and destitute Zimbabwe’s case. In Canada’s case? As the mindlessly headlong resource depletion and export continues—with little or no return to local jurisdictions with no environmental protection (case in point, Alberta), elections have become mindless. As there’s an election on the horizon, readers can change that. Vote with Cecil in mind. He paid dearly for change. Dave Milton, Grand Forks

Visitor centres can plan budgets

CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

Grand Forks Visitor Centre is one of several community visitor service centres in B.C. to benefit from a new three-year base funding model. Christina Lake and Greenwood will also benefit. Destination BC made the announcement in a press release sent out Sept. 21, which includes a new minimum base of $10,000 annually for the next three years for small and rural community visitor centres as well as an innovation fund available in 2016 to assist communities with projects that help them adapt to the changing needs and expectations of visitors, including through the use of technology. Grand Forks will receive $10,000. Christina Lake will receive $23,731. “Tourism is a key economic driver and job creator in British Columbia and helps keep our local communities strong, diverse and growing,” said Linda Larson, Boundary-Similkameen MLA, in the press release. Dawsha Hunt, manager of the Grand Forks Visitor Centre, said they were relieved to receive the funding, which was not guaranteed. “When Destination BC announced the change in their strategy for tourism in the province, funding was not guaranteed,” said Hunt. “We were hopeful but still holding our breath since last fall.” Hunt said the three-year commitment allows the centre to plan their budget accordingly. “The money will be used to operate the centre with staffing and general expenses,” she said. Hunt said the start of summer saw the centre shaping up

well in terms of increased visitors. “Our stats were starting to show an increase as early as May but towards the end of August visitors were really affected by the fires and smoke,” she said. Hunt said that centre staff worked hard to keep up with the most current information regarding road closures and fire danger. “The initial panic of road closures etc. on both sides of the border had us hopping to keep up with the most current information,” she said. “Thing were changing so fast and visitors were either already here or passing through and eager to get out of the danger zone. The misinformation on social media and widespread reporting by radio and TV was overwhelming and had a big effect on local tourism.” Hunt said they had many cancellations for the municipal campground and Rock Candy Mine, which “most certainly had a trickle-down effect on the other local businesses too.” She did say that September has been pretty busy. “We’ve had our normal busy shoulder season month to date. Seniors and many Europeans choose this month to travel the province while families are back to work or home with school-aged children.” The staff at the Christina Lake Welcome Centre was thrilled to get $23,731 each year for the next three years. “To have three years confirmed base funding was an absolute surprise for us,” said manager Cindy Alblas. “We were involved with the consultation process where the input was sought out from 20 different communities. We advised them at that time that their

present fee for service model presented a challenge for us. So they must’ve heard us.” Alblas said in previous years they only received funding for one year at a time. “What the funding means for us is that we’ll have longer term certainty which allows for us to have more flexibility and innovation to be creative in our organization,” she said. Alblas also said the money will also be used for staffing and rent. “This funding helps us to be vital in the community and be there for our visitors.” Alblas said the welcome centre had a strong summer despite the fire danger and smoke towards the end of August. “We had a fantastic centre at the Lake,” she said. “Tina’s Trading Post, our visitor information gift shop, introduced new branded clothing and various items this summer, which was a success for us. Many of our accommodators reported a great summer but, unfortunately, it did come to an abrupt halt with the fires.” She said despite the smoke, many visitors still enjoyed their vacations knowing that the community and RDKB kept everyone up to date and well informed on the situation. Alblas said the loss of tourists did hurt businesses but that tourism bounced back in September. “We are feeling visitors are still coming through now that the smoke has cleared. We’re seeing our European visitors and older travelers that we normally see in September.” Alblas said the welcome centre ambassadors were the front lines of helping travelers find alternates roads and be updated with the fire and smoke conditions.

Haworth nominated for Covenant awards CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

A local musician is receiving attention on the national scene. Gospel singer Maureen Haworth, who lives in Grand Forks with husband Rick, has been nominated for two Covenant awards, which honours the top Canadian Christian musicians, for top country album for It’s Time and top country song for Breathe in My Direction. “I’m blessed that it’s getting some recognition,” said Maureen. “I’m really excited. It was a real surprise; I was thrilled.” Maureen has been singing gospel music for several years now and is thrilled by the nomination. She began singing and playing bass in a country and oldies band called Phase 4 with her husband and several others. After more than 30 years, Phase 4 folded and Maureen and her husband began to sing smooth jazz. The pair then put out a gospel album in 2013. Rick then stepped into the background as Maureen emerged as a solo gospel singer. In 2014, Maureen put out her first solo gospel album this year called It’s Time, which has been nominated for gospel country album of the year. Her song Breathe

Maureen is excited about heading up to Edmonton for the Coventry Awards, which take place on Nov. 5 at Christ Church. “I’m so thankful to all my friends and family for their support and encouragement,” she said. “My prayer when I started was that people would be moved and feel blessed listening to my songs. That’s what feels so good about what I do.” Local gospel fans can pick up Maureen’s CDs at Pharmasave in Grand Forks as well online at her website (maureenhaworth.com) and at online sites such as iTunes and Amazon.

Literacy campaign launches in Grand Forks

RIPE

SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

Community leaders and volunteers will join Black Press and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy on Oct. 7 to raise awareness about the importance of literacy and to celebrate the power literacy has in Grand Forks and the Boundary. The 5th Annual Reach a Reader campaign will raise funds for local community-based literacy programs. Why literacy? Statistics indicate that up to 45 per cent of B.C.’s adult population has difficulty with some daily living tasks—due in part to limited literacy skills. These include reading a newspaper, filling out an application form, reading a map, or understanding a lease. “Literacy is not just the ability to read or write. People today must be able to fill out online materials, service agreements, job applications, and use social media,” says Sheila Dobie; local community literacy coordinator. “Through our Reach a Reader campaign, we hope to increase awareness of literacy needs in our community and raise funds to support the literacy programs and services available for children, families, adults, and seniors.” In Grand Forks, funds will help support child-

minding for the Together to Learn and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. Together to Learn offers parents the opportunity to upgrade their English, math and study skills with a Selkirk College instructor while childcare is provided in the same building. The weekly ESL class offers adults the opportunity to improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills with childcare provided when needed. You can support the Reach a Reader campaign by making a donation in exchange for a special edition of the Grand Forks Gazette on Oct. 7. Volunteers will be on the street with papers in hand at the Buy-Low and Overwaitea between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. You may also donate online at chimp.net/groups/grandforks-boundary-reach-a-reader-campaign. To learn more about community-based literacy programs in Grand Forks and the Boundary contact Sheila Dobie, Boundary community literacy coordinator, at boundarycoordinator@cbal. org or go to cbal.org/boundary. About Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) is a not-for-profit organization that develops, promotes and delivers literacy and essential skills services for people of all ages in the Columbia Basin and Boundary regions.

The B.C. government and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities are providing new grants totalling $500,000 to help communities identify and take action to reduce wildfire risks on private land. Fifty grants of up to $10,000 each will be made available to local governments and First Nations through the Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative (SWPI). The 2016 SWPI FireSmart Grant program will support communities to plan for wildfire prevention activities on private lands, as identified through the FireSmart Communities Program. FireSmart activities help decrease wildfire threats to homes and property and can prevent damage to structures, increase the effectiveness of firefighters and safeguard firesuppression resources. Funding provided through the 2016 SWPI FireSmart Grant program may be used to:

• Enhance public awareness of FireSmart principles. • Increase community participation in FireSmart activities. • Advance planning to address wildfire mitigation on private land. • Help communities obtain official recognition as “FireSmart Communities”. FireSmart recognition involves engaging neighbours, property owners, local government and First Nations authorities and other agencies to meet a set of recognition criteria to assist communities become more resilient to wildfire.w The Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative is administered by the Provincial Fuel Management Working Group, which includes the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, the Union of British Columbia Municipalities and the First Nations’ Emergency Services Society. The FireSmart Communities program is administered by Partners in Protection Association (PiP).

Applications for the SWPI FireSmart Grant program are being accepted until Nov. 30, 2015. The Program and Application Guide and Application Form is available on the UBCM website: ubcm.ca/EN/main/funding/ lgps/current-lgps-programs/ strategic-wildfire-prevention. html For information about the 2016 SWPI FireSmart Grant program, contact the Union of British Columbia Municipalities at lgps@ubcm.ca or 250 356-2947.

There was a three-way tie in the contest at the B.C. Lung Association booth at the Rock Creek and Boundary Fall Fair this weekend. The contest was to guess how many jelly beans were in the antique jar. There were 352 entrants in the contest to guess how many jelly beans were in the jar. Guesses ranged from 105 to 17,032. There were 760 jelly beans in the jar and the four contestants each guessed 750 the closest without going over. Congratulations to Mikala Todoruk from Grand Forks, Lee Macri from Grand Forks and Dale Kellerman, from Bridesville. Because there was a tie, a name had to be drawn by an independent person. Four-year-old Mikala Todoruk’s name was drawn and she won the antique jar and jelly beans and the others will receive a consolation prize. Volunteer Director of the Boundary Area of the B.C. Lung Association Michele Caskey extends thanks to all those who participated in the contest and to everyone who visited the booth and obtained information provided by the B.C. Lung Association.

Grand Forks Gazette

The Grand Forks Border Bruins have another win under their belts after a 3-2 overtime win over the Braves in Spokane Sunday. The Bruins got the first goal of the game with just under two minutes left in the first period as Dylan Haney scored on the power play assisted by Shayne Pluto and Graeme Close. Spokane scored two goals in a row in the second period with Josh Fisher and Paxton Malone scoring to put the home team up 2-1. Nickey Leeder tied the score for GF with a power play goal at 13:37 of the third period assisted by Jared Stang. Neither team was able to put the game away in regulation so the teams heading to overtime once again (Spokane won 3-2 in OT two weeks ago). Leeder got the game winner at 3:10 of the overtime period with another power play marker. He was assisted by

Nico Sidoni. Anthony Gallant picked up the win for the Bruins with 39 saves on 41 shots. On Saturday the Bruins were shut out 6-0 at home to the Kelowna Chiefs. The Chiefs, who out-shot GF 52-23, were led by a hat-trick from Jaden McNulty. The Bruins were back in action on Tuesday with a rare mid-week game in Castlegar (after press time). The team then heads on the road for games in Creston Friday and Princeton Saturday. The Bruins have a 2-4-0-01 (overtime loss) record after seven games and are tied with Spokane for fourth place in the Neil Murdoch division. Phelan was also pleased with the play of defensive players Riley Leighton, Jackson Olsen, Jared Sioga, Kayden Wormel and Ka Dorner who worked hard to support Lloyd and the Wolves a starting point for their offensive attack. The top scorer for GFSS was Fynn Dribney who notched six goals over the four games. “Dribney’s tenacity and tactical sense anchored the offence with accurate passes to create scoring chances while displaying creativity and unpredictability with a deadly finishing touch,” said Phelan.

Health

Making nourishing meals for kids

The fall is here and it is back to school. For parents, it is time to get back to the routine of preparing breakfasts and packing up lunches for their little ones. I am sure every parent strives to make the tastiest and most nutritious meals and understands the importance of healthy eating to promote energy and better attention for learning. I would like to share with you some basic tips on how to make healthy meals and snacks for children. As a nutritionist, I am not only passionate about making simple and tasty meals but also want to ensure meals are nutritionally balanced. Let’s start with common breakfast consisting of cereal, milk and orange juice. Is it actually nutritious? These foods can be high in sugar, various additives, artificial colours and flavours and lead to blood sugar fluctuations resulting in fatigue and weakness. Excessive amounts of sugar and additives might also promote a burst of hyperactivity in your child which can hamper their attention and learning. To negate this, I suggest that all meals and snacks be a balance of healthy fats, protein, carbohydrates and fibre. Look for preferably organic, whole grain and nuts/seeds cereal or granola with the sugar content of no more than five grams per serving. Read the labels to ensure there are few ingredients, with no artificial sweeteners, colors and flavours. Alternatively, you can make your own granola. Serve the cereal with local organic milk to make sure your child is

getting the best quality of milk. As to the juice, make your own NATASHA fruit juices or buy KURALESOVA 100 per cent orRegistered Holistic Nutritionist ganic fruit juice and dilute it with water in the proportion of 1:1. Now let’s take a look at the ubiquitous PB&J sandwich, so loved by children. I am not against it, but would not consider it as a nutritious lunch option. Since many children have allergy to peanuts, there are more and more schools becoming peanut-free. The other big concern regarding eating peanuts is aflatoxin, a naturally occurring mycotoxin, which is a known human carcinogen. So, if you wish to have a PB&J sandwich, look for organic, 100 per cent peanut butter with no added sugar, hydrogenated oils and additives. Fortunately, there are many healthy alternatives to peanut butter available, including butters made from seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, hemp) or tree nuts such as: almonds, walnuts, cashews, hazelnuts, etc. Instead of jam use banana slices or even few organic fresh berries, mashed with the fork and sprinkled with some coconut sugar. To increase the protein content, you could make a sandwich with cooked organic chicken breast or a piece of salmon, topped with sprouts, avocado and tomato slices. As to the bread, I would suggest buying sprouted grain bread, like Silver Hills. This brand offers various bread options, made from 85 per cent organic, non-ge-

‘Organic’ foods will need to be certified MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE Submitted to the Gazette

A sign says the fruits and vegetables for sale are organic, but what does that really mean and according to whom? The B.C. government is answering those questions by requiring all food and beverage products marketed as “organic” in B.C. to be certified under either a provincial or national certification program. Beginning in 2018, producers, processors and handlers of organic food and beverage products including farm gate sales, farmers’ markets and retail stores will require documentation verifying their products have accredited organic certification. Both the provincial and federal certification programs follow the general principles, management standards and use of permitted substances established by the Canada Organic Standards. Operators producing and selling their organic products strictly within B.C. will require provincial certification. B.C. companies with customers in other provinces or countries will require certification by a federally accredited certification body, just as they do today.

Requiring certification is a result of the B.C. government’s consultations with the Certified Organic Associations of B.C. (COABC), organic growers, and other stakeholders from January to March 2015, in which almost 80 per cent of certified organic growers supported the move to required certification. Based on additional input received during the consultations, the B.C. government will also work with COABC to provide assistance to help interested farmers and growers achieve or transition to organic certification by 2018. To further attract new and existing producers to consider becoming certified organic growers, the B.C. government is contributing partner funding for 10 COABC-led seminars. The B.C. government has also provided about $60,000 to support the COABC’s partnership with the Canadian Organic Trade Association’s “Think Before you Eat” campaign. The campaign will offer British Columbians information on what to look for when buying organic products, as well as promoting made-in-BC organic food and beverage products at farmers’ markets and retailers in the coming months.

netically modified ingredients. It is easier to digest, high in fibre and has minimal ingredients with no additives. Pack up snacks such as organic cheese slices, vegetable sticks, nuts and seeds. By feeding your children nourishing, from scratch meals, you can be sure they will get all the nutrients their growing body requires and improve their energy levels to allow for better attention for learning. Squirrely Snacks 3 tbsp pumpkin seeds, soaked for 4 hours 3 tbsp sunflower seed butter 3 tbsp hulled hemp seeds 3 tbsp sulphite free shredded coconut + ¼ cup for rolling 2 tbsp maple syrup A pinch of Himalayan salt Drain pumpkin seeds. Mix all ingredients together. Roll 1 tablespoon of mixture into a ball, then roll in coconut. Keep in a fridge or freezer. Makes about 10 balls. Enjoy!

Regular day reminds us of why we live here ➠ Wednesday, September 23, 2015

O

ver the course of a day in Grand Forks there are thousands of moments big and small. In a community as vibrant as ours, it’s not difficult to capture at least some of these moments for all to see. On Wednesday, Sept. 23, a team of photographers hit the streets from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the goal of documenting life in our town. Gazette staff Craig Lindsay was joined by local photographers Erin Perkins and Benjamin Gawletz in this mission. They were not in search of the dramatic, just a regular day as it unfolds. They found the people who simply make up the fabric of this great community—everyday tasks and interactions that remind us of why we live here. In the pages that follow, you will see the results of their hard work. We hope you enjoy this peek into life on our streets as much as our photographers enjoyed shooting it.
