Sex offender’s residence intentionally flooded Police install surveillance cameras to deter further acts Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Police have installed two video surveillance cameras and plan to put up a third in a neighbourhood where a convicted child sex offender resides. But the cameras aren’t there to monitor the behavior of James Conway – they’re to deter acts of vigilantism against him, after the most serious among a rash of mischief-type incidents occurred early Saturday morning. Conway’s residence on Joanita Place in the Bradner area of Abbotsford was intentionally flooded, causing the ceiling to collapse. Const. Ian MacDonald said police received a
report at around 2 a.m. Conway – whose presence in the neighbourhood has been the subject of two previous protest rallies – lives in the home with another convicted offender and their supervisor. All three were in the home at the time of the flooding incident, but no one was injured. MacDonald said when police arrived, they discovered that someone had unscrewed some lights on the exterior of the property and had run a hose onto the roof and into the attic. Police estimate the water had been running for about two hours. MacDonald said there have been about 15 incidents on the property since Conway moved there at the beginning of August.
These include a water valve being encased in concrete, a gate at the home being padlocked, rocks thrown at the residence, threatening letters attached to the gate, and “borderline threats” being yelled as people drive by. MacDonald said security cameras – not installed by police – were in place on the property, and the footage will be reviewed for evidence. The person(s) responsible for the flooding could face a potential charge of mischief over $5,000 and other offences, he added. MacDonald said such behaviour by residents is “disappointing” because it ties up police resources when the reports have to be Continued on A5

Crews were on scene Monday afternoon at a massive barn fire on Bradner Road, just south of McTavish Road. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation and likely won’t be confirmed for several days. 60,000 chickens were lost in the blaze, but no employees of the poultry operation were injured. Adams said it could take a few days for investigators to deter-
mine the exact cause of the fire. He said the fire was a difficult one to fight because of its size and the need to use water tenders – trucks used to transport water from
outlying hydrants in the rural area to the fire scene. Four water tenders were involved from Abbotsford, and one from Mission. About a dozen career
firefighters and 30 auxiliary members were on scene over the course of the day. The News was unable to reach anyone from the poultry operation before press deadline.
City to shut down medical pot shops Mayor not satisfied with how long process will take Laura RODGERS Abbotsford News
The City of Abbotsford is taking steps to shut down two medical marijuana dispensaries. Two outlets – Weeds Glass and Gifts on Clearbrook Road, and Mary Jane Glass and Gifts on George Ferguson Way – have opened in Abbotsford in recent months. “We don’t want to see them in Abbotsford, and we will move to have them removed,” said Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun. Both are co-run by Weeds Glass and Gifts Limited, a Vancouver-based medical marijuana group. They sell dried marijuana, concentrated resins, marijuana-infused food products, and pills and tinctures containing marijuana-based ingredients, as well as smoking and vaporizing equipment. The stores only sell their products to people age 19 and over with a valid medical marijuana prescription. They don’t have prescribing doctors on site, but they can arrange appointments with doctors
who are willing to prescribe medical marijuana. Marijuana dispensaries are not allowed in any Abbotsford zoning, and they also contravene federal laws that only allow medical marijuana to be distributed through specific Health Canada-approved channels. Other cities such as Vancouver have opted to license and regulate marijuana dispensaries in order to control where they can operate and what they can sell. But so long as these shops are against federal laws, Braun said he won’t support them in Abbotsford. “As long as it’s illegal, I will support enforcement to make sure that we don’t have any in Abbotsford,” he said. Both dispensaries applied for Abbotsford business licences, but were rejected. Braun said the city is in the process of notifying the businesses they are breaking city bylaws. If they don’t respond, he said, the city can go to court and request an order to shut the dispensaries down. This process is lengthy, and Braun is unhappy with how
long it might take. “It just takes too ... long for me,” he said. “We’re following a process. It may appear that we’re not doing anything, but we are.” Don Brea, who runs Weeds Glass and Gifts Limited, says these businesses are good for the community because they allow people to obtain marijuana without funnelling money to criminal organizations. “We draw money away from organized crime,” he said. He said he will continue to operate the Abbotsford businesses without licences, in a political move. His company also operates dispensaries, many of them unlicensed, in other cities. “We are trying to be part of the community,” he said. Brea advocates for the full legalization of marijuana, citing the tax revenues the drug brings in for the American states where it is legal. He says the drug can be helpful to patients with chronic pain. He’s still hiring employees for the two local stores, and plans to have three or four employees working at each location. Families worry about loss of licensed-care mental health beds Laura RODGERS Abbotsford News
The number of “licensed care” beds for people with mental illnesses is shrinking in the Abbotsford area, and patients’ families are concerned. Mountain View Home, a 25-bed licensed care facility on Abbotsford’s eastern city limit, was given notice in August to close in one year. This follows the closure of Sunrise on West Railway, a 30-bed licensed care home, in 2012. They’ll be replaced by 30 licensed care beds, 20 mental health assisted-living beds, and 18 subsidies for independent living with outpatient support. Licensed care includes around-the-clock nursing support, medication administration and meal service, according to group that will operate the new beds. Assisted living includes one provided meal a day, and less staff support but more independence. “This model works for some people, but not for the type of residents we are currently caring for,” said Patrick Newby, a registered nurse and director of care for
Mountain View Home. “The average stay here is 10 years. People have lived here for a long time. They feel safe, they feel comfortable, they don’t want to leave or be displaced.” Tove Olsen, the mother of a Mountain View resident, says her son’s severe schizophrenia would make living with a lower level of care impossible. She says the quiet rural location of Mountain View and the friendly townsfolk nearby have made her son’s life calmer and happier. “They’re talking about assisted living, but they get next to no care with assisted living. And supported independent living – they get nothing with that,” Olsen said. While her son has been promised a new licensed care bed after Mountain View closes, she’s concerned about the residents who don’t have family to advocate for them. The new licensed care and assisted living beds will be in a facility currently under construction on Marshall Road, near Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Fraser Health says this move as an expansion of mental health care, with a
release noting there will be a net increase of mental health care beds or housing subsidies. However, Newby and patients’ families are worried the assisted-living and independent housing subsidies won’t be enough to help Mountain View residents, many of whom have serious long-term mental and physical health issues. A letter prepared by Andy Libbiter, Fraser Health’s executive director of mental health and substance use, says, “We are not only providing more capacity, we are also providing care that is better suited to our clients,” the letter reads. “We have heard from some of our clients that they want to live more independently in the community as they recover from their illness.” An online petition opposing the closure of Mountain View Home, created by Newby, has collected 1,276 signatures as of press time. Newby says the facility mainly houses people with “severe, persistent” mental and physical illnesses. Fraser Health has scheduled a meeting with the families of Mountain View residents on Sept. 30.

Tree artwork topples off truck Kevin MILLS Mission Record
A commemorative piece of art destined for Abbotsford from its creator’s home in Mission toppled off a truck Monday, injuring two. KEVIN MILLS Mission Record
Two people were injured after being struck by a falling statue Monday. At about noon, the work of art, known as The Golden Tree, was being moved from Mission artist Dean Lauze’s home when it broke loose from its support and crashed onto the road. The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. “We had two lifting
points that were welded onto the structure and as we lifted it up, one broke loose,” explained Lauze. He said that despite some damage to the sculpture, it was still to be moved to be ready for Saturday’s unveiling. The Golden Tree will be located at Abbotsford’s International Friendship Garden on the north side of Clearbrook Library, at 32320 George Ferguson Way. The tree is a memorial to honour three women
and other farmworkers killed or injured on the job. Eight years ago, a van transporting farmworkers crashed and killed three women on Highway 1 in Abbotsford Carrying 17 passengers, the van had just two seatbelts, one seat consisted of a wooden bench and its tires were in poor condition and not properly inflated. investigated. During the most recent rally held in the neighbourhood, Mayor Henry Braun informed residents that city staff believed that Conway’s residence was being used outside of its permitted zoning designation for agricultural and residential uses, and the occupants were being asked

to leave. However, Braun said it could take some time to resolve the issue. MacDonald said police understand the concerns of neighbours, but urged citizens to wait for that matter to proceed. “Clearly, what we have here is more in the vigilante (realm),” he said. Dave Mantin of the Sexual
Abuse Network of Canada said he has been in touch with people concerned about Conway’s residency to inform them of legal avenues they can take to get him to leave their neighbourhood. He said his organization has been successful in moving 40 sexual offenders across Canada in the last five years to areas where children are not located.
Mantin said these moves have mostly been done through civil court proceedings in which neighbours have sought restraining orders against the offenders. He said his organization does not condone vigilante behaviour. “The problem is you’re making him (Conway) the victim … Good people are going to go to jail over this,” he said.

‘24 Hours Homeless’ aims for $30,000 Citizens go ‘homeless’ for Salvation Army fundraiser Vikki Hopes Abbotsford News
A group of local citizens will go “homeless” for 24 hours starting on Thursday, Oct. 15 with a goal of raising $30,000 for the local Salvation Army. Deb Lowell, public relations director for the agency, said the “24 Hours Homeless” event is aimed at increasing awareness of the challenges facing the people served by the Salvation Army. A 20-year-old man faces possible charges of impaired driving, dangerous driving, and failing to remain at the scene of an accident after a teen boy was struck by a vehicle early Saturday morning. The incident took place at about 12:30 a.m. in the area of Essendene and Gladys avenues. Const. Ian MacDonald said the 13-year-old pedestrian was with a group of friends who were crossing east on Essendene in the crosswalk when the Mustang – travelling north on Gladys – attempted to stop at a red light and skidded through the intersection. The vehicle crashed into a southbound Dodge truck, driven by a 17-year-old girl, and then veered toward the group of teens. All were able to jump out of the way, except for a 13-year-old boy on a scooter.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I WEDNESDAY, September 30, 2015
There’s no ‘right’ in this act Last weekend, someone placed a hose in the attic of a home in Bradner, and turned on the water. The flood caused the ceiling to collapse, resulting in what could costs tens of thousands of dollars to repair. It’s an act of mischief – illegal and punishable under the Criminal Code of Canada. Under virtually any circumstance, such action wouldn’t be considered by otherwise law-abiding citizens, and to do so would be widely decried and condemned. However, because this is the current home of a convicted child sex offender, some people actually think the act was justified in an effort to drive him out. They are wrong; just as wrong as the misguided person(s) who think a criminal act is a justifiable means to an end. This is vigilantism, pure and simple. It cannot be condoned or supported. Yes, parents in the area are fearful and
resentful of James Conway’s presence among their children. That is entirely understandable. They are correct in their assertion that laws need to be changed. Child sex offenders should not be allowed to live in the close proximity of kids. Abbotsford’s mayor agrees, and city hall is taking measures to move Conway out on the basis that the home is not zoned correctly for the purpose of housing released inmates. That process may take time, and it will take much longer to pressure lawmakers into changing the existing system. Yet, that is how a lawful, democratic society must operate. When individuals start to take the law into their own hands, and decide who has rights and who does not – regardless of their motivation – it undermines the foundation of the order, safety and security of all.

letters Not in the spirit On the weekend I was disappointed to see the Ed Fast campaign had placed election signs along Hwy. 11. A recently enacted Abbotsford bylaw permits such election signage at a handful of designated locations and on lawns of homeowners and tenants who wish to make clear to their neighbours which candidate they are supporting. I decided to visit the Fast campaign office to see why they were putting up signs willy-nilly along the highway. Ed Fast had just pulled into the parking lot to pick up a member of his team. The shoulder of the highway is provincial land, not the city’s, so we can put them up there, was how he explained his signs. I told him I thought the proliferation of his signs in space not designated by the city bylaw was against the spirit of the city’s aim to not have our streets cluttered with election signage. A spirit all campaigns except Fast’s have honoured to date. You would think a Conservative candidate would be a little more reluctant to lean on a legal technicality given the recent trouble and bad light the prime minister, the prime minister’s closest advisers and the prime minister’s Senate appointees have found themselves in lately. Abbotsford riding candidates pitch policies Conservative, NDP, and Green hopefuls address crowd Laura RODGERS Abbotsford News
The Abbotsford candidates for the Green, NDP, and Conservative parties went head-tohead on the first debate of the campaign on Sept. 24 Ed Fast, the Conservative incumbent; Jen Martel of the NDP; and the Green’s Stephen Fowler, had a chance to pitch their policies at the all-candidates’ meeting organized by the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board and the Fraser Valley IndoCanadian Business Association. Liberal candidate Peter Njenga and MarxistLeninist David Mackay did not attend. Fast, the current Minister of International Trade, focused his statements around his economic experience. Martel promoted the NDP’s platform with a focus on policies such as subsidized childcare. Fowler talked about his party’s focus on green technology development. Many of the night’s prepared questions hinged on issues about small business, farming and real estate. Fast argued that Canada needs to promote pipeline infrastructure in order to

The Conservative candidate said he wants to make sure employers have to hire Canadians before temporary foreign workers, but he also hopes to streamline the TFW program. He said joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership is “imperative,” but he will not sign any agreement that isn’t in Canada’s best interest. “This is very important for Canada’s long-term prosperity. Opening up new markets, so we can compete on a level playing field in the AsiaPacific region is absolutely critical,” said Fast. He supported creating a deemed trust for fruit and vegetable growers to protect them from insolvent American buyers. He said he plans to keep the age of eligibility for Old Age Security at 67, but stressed his
party’s other programs for seniors. He thinks the next national budget should be balanced. Martel promoted a “vigorous, scientific, environmental” assessment process for any pipeline projects. She didn’t take a position on temporary foreign workers. The NDP candidate said the Trans-Pacific Partnership shouldn’t be signed if it doesn’t keep supply management protections for Canadian dairy, poultry and egg farmers. “Before we consider signing any type of agreement, we need to ensure supply management policies are in place,” she said. On deemed trusts, she said her party doesn’t have a position. She wants to return Old Age Security to 65, and reduce the small business tax rate. She criticized the

Conservative government for “muzzling” scientists, and said she supported re-establishing a joint emergency preparedness program. Fowler wants to refine oil within Canada, and opposes pipelines to ship raw bitumen abroad. The Green candidate also said he wants to recognize more foreign professional credentials in Canada. He said he’s strongly against the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and prefers small family farms over “factory” farms. “We want to make more space in the local grocery stores for [family farms] so we’re not shipping them hundreds and hundreds of miles away, with the carbon,” he said. He wants to implement a national pharmacare plan and fund green energy technology.

Preliminary student counts indicate that enrolment in the Abbotsford school district may have increased by 80 students, a rise above expectations and one that will bring both opportunities and challenges. The district has seen little increase in recent years, with modest fluctuations of around 20 students or so. This year’s increase is substantially more than that, and – should it hold through the annual audit – will bring with it a commensurate increase in funding from the provincial government. “A positive increase in enrolment is always great in the school district,” Superintendent Kevin Godden said. The growth is not uniform, however, with schools on the east side of the district experiencing more growth than those on the west side. That has posed some challenges as the district looks to make room in those schools with more students. Divisions have been added at four elementary schools, and subtracted at two schools. But with Sandy Hill and McMillan elementary schools already at capacity, 18 students from the two schools are being bused to Prince Charles and Mountain elementary schools, respectively. Among the middle schools, Abbotsford middle has seen the largest jump in enrolment, while Fraser and Clayburn middle schools are both full. The district has over 19,000 students.

Participants pay $50 to enter, and the highest horsepower of each class wins a cash prize of up to $2,500. The event starts at 6 p.m. at Emmanuel Mennonite Church, 3471 Clearbrook Rd. Dr. Stephanie Phetsamay Stobbe, a former Laotian refugee, will speak on “From Refugee to Citizen: The Resettlement of Indochinese Refugees in Canada.” Stobbe teaches at the Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg, where she heads the Peace and Conflict Studies program. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon to North Vietnamese forces. Canadians were extremely generous in accepting and sponsoring tens of thousands of “boat people” fleeing death and destruction in Southeast Asia. Mennonites, many of them remembering their own refugee heritage, were actively involved in helping out. Stobbe will focus on the role of Mennonite Central Committee in helping resettle Southeast Asian refugees. She will also look at the current flood of “boat people” arriving on the shores of Europe. Tickets for the dinner are $25 and can be purchased at the MHSBC office at 2825 Clearbrook Rd. (604853-6177) or online at mhsbc.com.

Little Hearts gala raises money IPL for Abbotsford hospital Event raised $20,000 last year for two units The Little Hearts Gala returns for its third year on Saturday, Oct. 3, raising funds for Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Little Hearts is the brainchild of organizer Jessica Bugra of Abbotsford. It is an evening of entertainment, dinner and dancing held at the Bollywood Banquet Hall in Surrey.
Live art contest at The Reach Art Battle Canada visits Abbotsford for the first time on Friday, Oct. 2 at The Reach Gallery Museum (32388 Veterans Way). Doors open at 7 p.m., and the competition begins at 7:30. Art Battle is live competitive painting. Twelve painters will create the best work they can in 20 minutes. As they work, patrons move around the easels, closely watching the creative process. The medium is acrylic paint and the tools allowed are brushes, palette knives or any non-mechanical implements. There are typically three rounds, and at the end of each round, the audience votes for their favourite painting. The top two winners from each round compete in the finale at the end of the evening. All finished paintings are put up for silent auction. Tickets are available to purchase online at https://www.picatic. com/ab312
Power of good Blog.blackpress4good.com
Bugra started the event in 2013 and donated the proceeds to a children’s charity. In 2014, she chose Abbotsford Regional Hospital through the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation as the beneficiary. Last year’s gala drew 500 people and raised $20,000 for the pediatric unit and neonatal intensive care unit
(NICU) of the hospital. The funds were used to purchase a breast pump, trolley and waterless milk warmer, and a Giraffe Blue Spot Phototherapy System to treat babies suffering from jaundice. This year’s event will raise funds in support of medical imaging, pediatrics and the NICU at Abbotsford Regional Hospital.
Tickets are $40 ($20 for children 15 and under) which includes appetizers, an Indian buffet, a dessert table, a photo booth, entertainment, dancing, prizes and more. Tickets can be purchased at the foundation office at the hospital or by contacting Jessica at littlehearts. gala@gmail.com or 604-866-8323.

Question: I have noticed that my skin is looking dull and I have some sun spots that have appeared. What can I do? Answer: Over the years sun damage causes us to have broken capillaries and sun spots which can make us look 10 years older. We have various ways to improve skin texture and tone. We can start by using a combination of physician grade treatment products which include Vitamin A, hydroquinone and sunblock as well as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). Usually 3 - 5 treatments are necessary. If you are interested in a more aggressive treatment we can combine physician grade products, IPL and Fraxel laser – the combination will enhance each others results. You will need to continue protecting yourself from the sun and use sunblocks, hats and sunglasses to maintain the results. Dr. Marianna Snyman

Sikh feminist exhibition coming to UFV
$
Photos, videos and scholarship to be featured at Abby campus Laura Rodgers Abbotsford News
A multimedia art exhibition about Sikh feminism is opening on Sept. 29 at the University of the Fraser Valley. Using photos, videos and scholarship, the exhibition titled (Mis)Interpretation — Sikh Feminisms in Representations, Texts, and Lived Realities will show various perspectives on Sikhism from women’s perspectives,
and feminism through a Sikh lens. “We hope to inspire some ‘Aha!’ moments and spark dialogue,” said Satwinder Bains, director of the UFV Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies. “Sikh feminist thought is a small field, and we want to contribute to it.” The exhibition will include photographs and videos from Suvi Bains and Rishma Johal, two local artists, as well as
daily life photography from eight local Sikh women. Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh, a Sikh scholar from Colby College in Maine, will present a keynote lecture at 5 p.m. on Sept. 29 as part of the opening reception. Sharanjit Sandhra, coordinator of the Centre for IndoCanadian Studies, says this exhibition covers some very important topics. “This show will reflect
our norm, our lived reality,” said Sandhra. “Traditionally, most interpretations of the Sikh faith have been very male-centric…but the scriptures belong to all of us, and we have our own thoughts and feelings about how to live according to them.” The exhibition takes place at the S’eliyemetaxwtexw Gallery in room Room B136 of UFV’s Abbotsford campus. It will run until Oct. 20.

The Rotary Club of Abbotsford presented a $29,000 donation to the Abbotsford Hospice on Sept. 22, thanks to the successful Rotary Million Dollar Hole-in-One fundraising event. It raised over $44,000, made possible by sponsors and donors, volunteers, and 536 golfers. The other recipients of this event will be announced at a later date. The Rotary Million Dollar Hole-in-One was started to support the Abbotsford Hospice in paying off their first mortgage. To-date the Rotary Club of Abbotsford has donated close to $500,000 to Abbotsford Hospice including Holmberg House. Fundraising director Shirley Wilson said, “I am particularly humbled by the support from our community when it comes to charity. Our Rotary club has committed to raising funds for important gaps and needs in our community and it could not be done without the support of many.” Dave Holmberg, community philanthropist and the family namesake of Holmberg House, stated, “the Rotary Million Dollar Hole-in-One is a terrific community effort and a great success.”

After a strong start to the season, the Abbotsford Pilots hit a bump in the road this weekend. The Pilots lost 2-1 at home on Friday and then fell 4-3 in overtime to the Mission City Outlaws on Saturday. Friday’s effort saw Abbotsford fail to score until the 58th minute of action, when Alexander Methorst scored a power play goal after being set up by Dryden Michaud and Cole Methorst. The Pilots made a late push but it was too little, too late. Both teams were scoreless after the first period but North Vancouver took over in the second, scoring twice and out-shooting the Pilots 21-12. Abbotsford head coach Jim Cowden said it wasn’t a great effort from his team. “We were sluggish and just had no energy,” he said. “We had a good week of practice but we just came out flat and had no jump whatsoever.” Cowden said it was the middle frame that cost the Pilots the game. “We should have came out better than that,” he said. “The third period was pretty good but the second period was terrible.” He said the team failed to support
the puck carrier and didn’t play like a team for most of the game. “We were playing too individual tonight,” he said. “There was no support offensively or defensively. There’s not a lot of good things in this game for us other than our goaltending, [Jacob] Crawford played well and he helped keep the game close.” The Pilots followed Friday’s game up with an overtime loss to the Outlaws but earned a single point in the process after a late goal by Hayden Guilderson. Abbotsford had a 2-1 lead after the second period, after goals from each of the Methorst brothers but then fell behind 3-2 in the third, only for Guilderson to tie the game up with 1:59 remaining in the game. Mission won the game on a penalty shot 20 seconds into the extra frame. The Outlaws catapulted over the Pilots into first place after the win, and Abbotsford is now in second place in the Harold Brittain conference with a record of three wins, two losses and one overtime loss. The Pilots return to action on Oct. 1, when they travel to Langley to battle the Knights. The next home game is on Oct. 2, when the Pilots host the undefeated Grandview Bruins. Face-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the MSA Arena.

UFV beats Seattle The UFV Cascades men’s basketball team hit the floor for the first time this season and it proved to be a memorable debut for new team member Brandon Burke. With the game tied at 90, and 1.4 seconds left, the Toronto product hit the game-winning shot to give the Cascades the 92-90 win over the visiting Seattle Mountaineers on Saturday. The Mountaineers held the lead for much of the second half, but the Cascades rallied to draw closer and give themselves a chance to win with the game’s final possession. Forward Nate Brown led the way for UFV, with 26 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. The men’s team heads to Victoria this weekend for the Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament. It was a dominant weekend for the UFV Cascades men’s and women’s soccer teams. The clubs won all four games they competed in and continued what has been a strong start to the season. The highly ranked women’s team faced off against the University of Alberta on Friday and beat them 2-0. The teams were scoreless after the first half but Jade Palm tallied in the 79th and Monika Levarsky scored late in the game to secure the win. Rookie Gurneet Dhaliwal led all players with three shots on goal and goalkeeper Kayla Klim made seven saves for the clean sheet. The women then traveled to Prince George on Sunday to battle the UNBC Timberwolves and exploded for the biggest offensive output of the season. The Cascades beat UNBC 6-1 and got first half goals from Brittany Zacharuk, Levarsky and Palm. The offence continued in the second half, with goals from Amanda Carruthers, Dhaliwal and another from Levarsky. Keeper Emily Harold made eight saves for the win. The pair of wins improve the Cascades to a record of five wins, zero losses and one tie. UFV remains in second place in the Canada West Western division behind UBC by two points but they have one game in hand on the Thunderbirds. It was a similar story for the men’s team, as
they swept a two game set in Prince George against the Timberwolves. Elijah Sampson scored in the 59th minute to give the Cascades the 1-0 win over UNBC on Saturday, and the UFV defence held the Timberwolves to only two shots on goal. Keeper Alex Skrzeta earned the clean sheet and the win. The two teams met again on Sunday and UFV kept UNBC off the scoreboard again, winning 3-0. Daniel Molendjik opened the scoring at the seven minute mark, with Colton O’Neill and Brady Weird adding goals in the second half. Skrzeta recorded his second straight shutout in the win. The weekend moves the men’s team to a record of four wins and two losses and they sit in third place in Canada West’s Pacific division. Following the weekend action, Levarsky was awarded the Canada West second star of the week and the women’s team moved up one spot to rank fifth in the CIS National rankings. This marks the fifth consecutive week that the women’s team has been ranked in the CIS Top Ten, a new record for the school. The Cascades are the top ranked Canada West team and sit behind Laval, Ottawa, Laurier and York. The men’s team returns to its home pitch at Abbotsford Secondary on Friday at 4 p.m., when UBCO comes to town. They also host TRU on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The women remain on the road, MacEwan in Edmonton on Saturday and MRU in Calgary on Sunday.

The UFV Cascades men’s golf team was no match for Camosun’s home course advantage at the third Pacwest golf tournament in Victoria on Saturday and Sunday. UFV finished second in the team competition, posting a total of 575 and 21 strokes behind winner Camosun. Connor O’Dell was the top ranked Cascade at the event, shooting a combined 139 to finish fourth overall. On the women’s side, the UBCO Heat edged the Cascades by 22 strokes to win the team competition. UFV’s Hannah Dirksen shot a combined 155 to finish second.
