SERVING MISSION SINCE 1908

Campaign kicks into high gear

COOKIN’ AT THE CLARKE

Candidates debate social issues Kevin Mills Mission Record

Social issues were up for debate on Tuesday night as five of the six candidates running in the Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon riding attended an all-candidates meeting hosted by Mission Community Services Society (MCSS). Topics at the Clarke Theatre ranged from missing aboriginal women to help for veterans, and disabled programs to infrastructure. A question from the audience regarding road repair for Lillooet led to a brief debate on infrastructure. Liberal candidate Jati Sidhu said his party will spend $125 billion on infrastructure, and the party is “committed to build new roads, build new bridges and build new schools.” Conservative candidate Brad Vis said the Conservatives have invested $3.5 billion in infrastructure funding in B.C. “We’ve made record investments in this program and all of you see that day to day.” He cited the Port Mann Bridge, Alex Fraser Bridge and improvements to the Sea to Sky Highway and the Mission Bridge as examples. When asked about his stance on holding an inquiry to investigate missing aboriginal women, NDP candidate Dennis Adamson told the crowd his party was in support of the process. “We said that within 100 days of being elected, we would start that inquiry. It’s about time.” Arthur Green, of the Greens, said his party fully supports the findings of the truth and reconciliation commission. “The Green Party will implement those findings and will stand with First Nations governments,” he said, adding the Greens will call for an immediate national inquiry for murdered and missing indigenous women. Sidhu said domestic violence is five times higher among aboriginal women, and over the past decade, thousands have gone missing. He said the Harper government has been “putting a blind eye on it.” “We, the Liberal Party, within the first 90 days of government, we will call for a national inquiry.” When asked what his party would do to help programs for the Continued on 5

The Golden Tree statue is now in place in Abbotsford’s I n t e r n a t i o n a l Friendship Garden after a difficult start earlier this week. On Monday, in Mission, the statue fell off the truck that it had been loaded on and crashed onto the road, injuring two people. There were no serious injuries and the tree suffered minor damage. The installation proceeded the following day in time for the scheduled unveiling this weekend. The project, created in memory of three female farmworkers who were killed in a 2007 crash on Highway 1 in Abbotsford, was put in place Tuesday afternoon with the help of ACL Crane Service. An unveiling ceremony for the monument takes place this Saturday at 11 a.m. The Friendship Garden is located on the north side of Clearbrook Library (32320 George Ferguson Way). The Golden Tree honours Sarbjit Kaur Sidhu, Amarjit Kaur Bal and Sukhvinder Kaur Punia. They were among 14 workers who were in a poorly maintained and unsafe work van when the driver lost control and crashed on March 7, 2007. A coroner’s inquest into the tragedy was held in 2009, resulting in 18 recommendations to improve the

Candidates questioned From 1

disabled, Vis said working with those with disabilities was one of his passions. “The biggest thing that people with disabilities in the community are saying is we want a place to work, we want to feel dignified.” He wants to work with local businesses to make sure more people are employed. Vis also said his party promotes trade and education, and noted the government has made new programs for loan forgiveness for people in trades and announced it will provide loan forgiveness for all First Nations people looking to enter the medical field. Wyatt Scott, an independent candidate, said the current government hasn’t diversified. He said the Fraser Canyon has so many resources, it’s perfect for diversification. “We have an opportunity to start building the green sector. B.C. is lacking right now in the green sector.” He believes the technology and trades sector will flourish if that course is taken. Green agreed. “We in the Green Party believe that the greatest economic catalyst that the world will ever see will be the transfer from fossil fuels to clean renewable enGREEN ergy,” he said. Adamson said the NDP would immediately raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. “That will get some money moving around the economy.” But Vis said that move will only apply to one per cent of the population – federally regulated telecommunication workers. “There will be no new minimum wage because that is a provincial responsibility. The federal government has no constitutional authority to say there will be a new minimum wage,” said Vis. When asked about the legalization of marijuana, Scott said

he felt pot is more accessible to children than alcohol. He said criminals are profiting from marijuana, and it’s a “no-brainer” to take the drug off the streets, regulate it and put the money in government coffers. “We can enhance education, health care and whatever else we want.” Vis said, under the Conservatives, funding for health care has increased every year. “We have promised the Canadian public that by the end of the decade there will be $40 billion in transfers to provinces.” Green said a mental health and homeless strategy is one of the main platforms for his party, noting that homelessness and mental health often go hand in hand. “We found it’s more economical to deal with homelessness than it is to ignore it.” He is promoting a housing-first strategy, which focuses on first getting the homeless into shelter and then dealing with the issues that put them on the streets. Sidhu, when asked about supporting veterans, said the current government has failed Canada’s military personnel, and the Liberals will “ensure that our veterans and their families have nothing less than the best of care and support from a grateful nation.” He said a quarter of the veteran affairs staff was cut since 2008. Vis said his party has made some mistakes, but believes the new veterans affairs minister has made “some excellent changes to address some of the misgivings.” Scott continued to promote the benefit of voting independent, saying party politicians are told

how to vote by their leaders. “There’s nothing democratic about that.” He said he would represent the community, rather than a party. Scott also took an apparent shot at Adamson, who struggled to answer some questions. “Some of us up here don’t even know our own party policy.” Adamson, who is a Fraser Valley Regional District director, admitted to not knowing all the NDP policies, but said, “I’ve been spending the last seven years actually governing. I’m not sitting around in a rock shop watching politics, talking to people about it. I’m actually doing it.” Scott owns a rock shop in downtown Mission. Vis joined in ADAMSON the debate, saying Scott, as an independent, wouldn’t sit on any committees, and would be in the back of the room, speaking less and having less opportunity to do things. He then turned his attention to the NDP candidate, noting he was audited in 2012-13 for $28,000 in expenditures related to travel. “That was like going across Canada back and forth six times, and that was for representing 720 people in the community of Yale and surrounding areas,” said Vis. Adamson defended himself saying, “We were all audited and it was found that there was no wrongdoing whatsoever.” Marxist-Leninist candidate Elaine Wismer did not attend.

OPINION

Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Voters: Educate yourself

Finally! The federal election campaign is heating up at last. On Tuesday night, candidates in the riding of Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon came together for an all-candidates meeting on social issues. This marked the first time many voters in Mission had the opportunity to see all the candidates – with the exception of Marxist-Leninist candidate Elaine Wismer who was a no-show – together in one room. What proceeded was an often lively debate that showcased not only the policies of the candidates, but the personalities as well. It was good to observe a little fire in what, so far, has been a quiet local campaign. About 400 people came out to the Clarke Theatre to see their potential MPs in action.

Do you feel well informed about the federal candidates and their policies?

It’s a shame that more voters didn’t take advantage of the event. In the end, some candidates did well while others not so, but if you didn’t go to the meeting you didn’t get to witness how the candidates do under pressure. A second all-candidates took place last night in Abbotsford, so for many, it was another lost opportunity. A third session, being hosted by the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce, is set for Oct. 5, two weeks prior to election day. The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. in the Clarke Theatre. This could be an undecided voter’s last chance to see the candidates face each other. Make the time to go. Educate yourself before you head to the polls.

LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Do you agree with council’s decision to spend $440,000 on a new skatepark? Here’s how you responded:

Inner children take over city hall Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views We’re seeing the effects of our postliterate, feelings-based education system and media on the federal election. Candidate bozo eruptions are becoming more frequent. Most recently a Liberal candidate on Vancouver Island admitted she has long believed that hijacked jetliners could not have destroyed the World Trade Centre on 9-11, that it was all “a lie.” That was “my truth,” she said, in the lingo of the feelings-first, inner-child crowd. Now she’s “moved on” to a slightly different fact-free conclusion, that we’ll just never know how those 3,000 people were murdered. And she wants to go to Ottawa and help run this country. Feelings-based beliefs were on display again at last week’s Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Vancouver, where bozo eruptions by local politicians come in bunches. This year’s main outbreak was an emotional demand that the B.C. government enact a provincial bill of rights. This magic municipal Magna Carta “recognizes the

right of every resident to live in a healthy environment, including the right to clean air, clean water and vibrant ecosystems.” Alert taxpayers may wonder, how many lawyers would it take to define “vibrant”? More on that in a moment. Local councils across B.C. and around the country have been pitched this scheme by the David Suzuki Foundation, which calls it the Blue Dot campaign. In short, it’s part of the bigger plan to save the planet by crushing capitalism, currently being pushed by the Pope, the UN and others. Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps was one of the most passionate backers. She quoted the plea presented to her council by an 11-yearold recruited by the Blue Dot team. There are many such children, terrified by indoctrination about the imminent destruction of Earth and all its cuddly creatures that has bombarded them since they learned to speak. They are found in the wealthiest countries in human history, those enjoying health, comfort and opportunity not imagined by anyone 100 years ago. In the vast, air-conditioned hall of the Vancouver Convention Centre, there were several attempts at adult supervision. Coquitlam Coun. Terry O’Neill noted that unlike intrinsic rights articulated in Canada’s charter, freedom of assembly and so forth, this is an attempt to invent

new rights that are actually demands for “others to do something for you.” Indeed, if we’re going to have government by 11-year-olds, we might as well throw in a right to free ice cream. Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz went off on a rant about how this new “vision” would protect us from things like Volkswagen fiddling its diesel fuel emission results. The resolution calls for “access to justice when environmental rights are infringed,” which sounds like code for some sort of costly new legal aid program to pursue every individual grievance. Meanwhile, in the real world, class action lawsuits are being prepared to gain compensation for lost resale value of millions of cars. This is what happens in fortunate places like Canada that already have access to justice. O’Neill read off a long list of existing B.C. legislation that protects water, air, wildlife, food, public health and so on. Helps replied that this bill of rights would “consolidate” all that. One more layer of bureaucracy, that’s the Victoria spirit. Alas, the resolution passed in a show of hands that should have been, but wasn’t, put to a counted vote.

THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

If we live in the Spirit and strive to be godly and good, we should manifest the fruit of the spirit, as opposed to the works of the flesh. It is noteworthy that Paul speaks of the works of the flesh in the plural but refers to the fruit of the Spirit in the singular, suggesting that these attributes are united in the person who lives a godly life. The fruit of the Spirit is “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” (Galatians 5.22-23) And, the person who walks in the spirit will manifest these qualities as if they were the natural outgrowth of their soul. These are qualities which all good people should manifest and for which we should strive, but with which we may struggle mightily. Being patient and kind, and exercising self-control is easy enough when we are dealing with others who are themselves patient, kind, and self-controlled, but these can be incredibly difficult when dealing with those who are impatient, unkind, or lacking in self-control. We should open our hearts to the love of God and let His Spirit infuse us with the seeds of His divine love. And then, work hard to till and tend the soil of our life so that we might bear the fruit of the Spirit, spreading God’s love throughout the world. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart. New K.J.V. Galatians 6:9

Mission man receives 20 months Found guilty of sexual interference of a 15-year-old Paul J. Henderson Black Press

A man who met a 15-year-old girl on a popular social media site, picked her up at her Chilliwack school and had sex with her while filming the statutory rape will spend more than a 18 months behind bars. In a separate incident, Sheldon James Lowney of Mission also had sex with another 15-year-old girl and filmed that, this time without the girl’s knowledge. The now 24-yearold pleaded guilty in B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack to two counts of sexual interference of a person under the age of 16, one count of drug possession and one breach while out on bail. In a July decision posted online last week, Justice Brian Joyce sentenced Lowney to 15 months in jail for the sexual interference of one girl and 14 months for the other. Those sentences are being served concurrently. Lowney was also sentenced to four months for drug trafficking after 318 grams of marijuana were found in his residence during a search related to the rape. It was May of 2012 when a then 15-yearold Chilliwack girl met

Lowney on the website Nexopia. He was 21. The two communicated via social media and text messaging for a period of time during which explicit sexual conversations took place. Over the next few months they met several times. In one instance, on Sept. 13, 2012, Lowney picked the girl up from a school in Chilliwack and took her to his apartment in Mission. There they engaged in various sex acts, which

Lowney filmed. He also gave her $100. It was that recording of the sexual activity that eventually did Lowney in, according to court documents. Sometime between the September incident and November, his girlfriend at the time found out about the videos. She took still photographs of some scenes, posted them on a fake Facebook account and forwarded copies to family members of

the victim. When the Chilliwack victim’s mother became aware of the Facebook photos, she contacted police. During the execution of a search warrant on Lowney’s apartment on Dec. 7, 2012, police found 318 grams of marijuana, paraphernalia used for dealing drugs and $2,585 in cash. Police also found a video on a hard drive of Lowney with another 15-year-old girl.

On Saturday evening the team was again called out, this time to investigate a flare sighting on the Fraser River near Hatzic. The team was unable to find anyone in distress. Then, on Sunday evening, the team assisted the Mission RCMP in locating a missing hunter in the Steelhead area. Langley RCMP is investigating after an onice brawl between two junior B hockey teams escalated to the point that one coach allegedly assaulted the other. The fracas happened on Thursday night at the George Preston Recreation Centre between the Langley Knights and the Mission City Outlaws. Early in the third period – and with Mission ahead 9-3 – a line brawl broke out after an alleged dirty hit by a Mission player. During the fight, Knights coach John Craighead allegedly jumped onto the Mission City bench “and put his hands on the coach,” said Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Largy. It is also alleged he assaulted a member of the Mission team – not in uniform – who had come to the bench along with another player to try to separate

were targeting one of the Knights’ youngest players. “At that time, I felt genuine fear for the safety and bodily health of my players,” Craighead said. Craighead added the team will respect the final decisions of the league and the RCMP. “Aside from being thoroughly disgusted and embarrassed over this incident, I will have no further comment until I complete my investigation,” said Pacific Junior Hockey League executive vice-president Ray Stonehouse on Monday morning. Five Langley players and four members of the Outlaws have been suspended, while Veitch was handed a 10-game ban. Mission players who have been suspended for five games include Justin Bowerman, Nate Castonguay and Cole Pisiak. Kyle Lennea has also been suspended for an indefinite number of games.

Local artist creates gift Mission-based First Nations artist Peter Gong has helped create a gift for President Xi of China. Gong has collaborated with his nephew, Seattle-based Louie Gong (born in Mission), to create the gift. Louie, who is widely recognized for his unique merger of First Nations and Chinese artistic influences, was commissioned to create this gift by the City of Seattle. By working together, the two artists have combined Louie’s hand-painted Fu Dog design and applied it to one of Peter’s hand made bentwood boxes, which are made of red and yellow cedar in his Mission workshop. The art piece was presented to the president of China last week.

In 2006, she earned her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. How Hospice Started Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

It’s been three decades since Lilian Dudfield decided to take action, and now her foresight is being celebrated. The Mission Hospice Society hosted a 30th anniversary celebration – on September 24 – and Dudfield, who founded the society in 1985, was one of several honoured guests at the event. A lifelong member of the society, Dudfield began the society primarily because she wasn’t “very happy with the idea of death.” She first started contemplating the idea while working as an administrator for a care home in Prince George. She didn’t like the procedure used to deal with terminally ill patients. “They would put them in a room by themselves when they were dying. And I got to know these people and I didn’t feel they should be on their own,” said Dudfield. She used to sneak into their rooms, hold their hands and talk to them. “Even if they are unconscious I still think they can hear you and I don’t think anybody should die alone.” After viewing a six-week long

television special on the Knowledge Network about hospice and palliative care, Dudfield attended an information meeting, in Abbotsford. Inspired after the meeting, Dudfield and Abbotsford’s Jeanette Poulin agreed that a hospice program was needed in the valley. They decided to hold their own meeting to see if others were interested in forming a group. To their surprise, more than 100 people showed up. Dudfield took the names of all the people from Mission and the Hospice Society was born. “We found that it was so needed,” she said. Dudfield’s husband had passed away in 1979 and there were no grief recovery programs for her at that time. Now the society could help others. “Not that we were councillors but we listened.” She said at that time, “you couldn’t talk to people about dying. It just wasn’t done.” But it’s a different story today. Programs are available to assist, not only the patient, but the family as well. One of the many aspects that

Dudfield feels is important is to talk to the patients just after they have been diagnosed. “That’s when they really need to have somebody to talk to. You can’t talk to family members because they are all upset. And although I’m not upset, I’m compassionate towards them and I listen to them and hear what they’re feeling.” Dudfield has always visited with patients, and although she can’t get around like she used to, she still visits. She has one person who she talks to via Skype – an online video program – thats allows her to sit and chat. Dudfield said the Hospice Society was a dream, that she always knew would be successful and would grow. “I’d like to see it grow further. There are only 10 beds in this community. We need more.”

The initial meeting to begin a hospice attracted more than 100 people. peo

30 Year Celebration The Mission Hospice Society celebrated its 30th anniversary, along with the 10th anniversary of the Christine Morrison Hospice, on Sept. 24. The celebration was hosted at the organization’s location – the Rock Family Hospice House – at 32180 Hillcrest Ave., with tours provided of the hospice at Mission Hospital. The event was open to the public, and included refreshments and a birthday cake. Welcoming remarks were given by board president Mark Scudder and executive

director Angel Elias. The event also honoured founding member Lilian Dudfield; Cliff and Marjorie Rock, who gifted their house to the Mission Hospice at a value of $355,000; and the many volunteers who have supported the organization over the years. Guests included current volunteers and those who helped start the 30 year journey that the Mission Hospice Society has enjoyed. Our dedicated staff and volunteers Vikki Hopes ABBOTSFORD NEWS

Thirty years ago, it was rare to talk openly about death and grief. Lilian Dudfield didn’t agree with that approach. She saw huge gaps in palliative care and the way that many people were dying alone. She didn’t think this should be happening, and she wanted everyone should die with dignity. Dudfield and two others began volunteering at the hospital to sit with patients as they took their “journey of death.” This was the beginnings of the Mission Hospice Society, which today has 135 active volunteers providing support to people in their last stages of life, as well as programs and services for their grieving families. The agency is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, along with the 10th anniversary of the Christine Morrison Hospice at Mission Memorial Hospital. Executive director Angel Elias said the support provided to families is “life-changing.” Board president Mark Scudder agrees. He had recently joined the board of directors when his mother-

in-law went into palliative care and was then transferred to the Christine Morrison Hospice. He said there aren’t enough words to describe the difference it made for his mother-in-law and her loved ones. “She was extremely afraid … but the way that hospice is run is absolutely amazing. Every member of our family left that experience with tears of gratitude for the level of comfort, the level of care.” Elias said the credit for the good work provided by the organization can go to the dedicated volunteers, who last year logged 14,000 hours serving the community, and to paid staff, who often put in more hours than they’re paid for. “We’re really blessed. We have some great supports,. Our volunteers are amazing. We would be nowhere without our volunteers … We never take them for granted,” she said. Elias said the organization is also grateful for the support of its donors, who cover approximately 15 per cent of the society’s annual operating budget of about $266,000. (The rest comes from gaming funds and a portion from Fraser Health to help with

staff wages.) The Mission Hospice Society operates several programs including volunteer training and bereavement support groups, including Circle of Friends for kids. The Mission Hospice Society was also instrumental in opening the 10bed Christine Morrison Hospice and providing ongoing volunteer and comfort measures, such as TVs and blankets. Fraser Health funds the medical side of the hospice. The hospice society also provides support to people who choose to die at home or to stay in the palliative care unit of the hospital. “Dying with dignity is front and centre, and talking about death is front and centre … Nobody should die alone and no family should ever have to go through grief in a bad way. That’s what we’re here to do.” For more information, visit missionhospice.bc.ca, or call 604-8262235 or email info@missionhospice.bc.ca.

In 2014, hospice volunteers logged in 12,641 hours of time.

Thank you Mission Hospice for your 30 years of compassionate care.

Permanent home donated by Rock family Nicolle Hodges MISSION RECORD

A small act of kindness is said to bring good karma, if you believe in that sort of thing. In which case, Marjorie and Cliff Rock, who donated an entire house to the Mission Hospice Society, can expect an abundance of good fortune for years to come. Their donation provided the hospice with its current office, aptly named in their honour as the Mission Hospice Society Rock Family Hospice House. Cliff owned the extra home for three years before his son contacted the hospice about the potential donation. “They said they would love to move into it and use it as an office because of its proximity to the hospice,” he explains. “My first thought was, ‘fine by me,’ since I’ve been supporting the hospice over the years through donations anyway.” The MHS is celebrating its 30th year anniversary, meaning that since 1985, residents of Mission and its surrounding Fraser Valley

communities have benefitted from care and outreach programs. It has served as a safe haven for those living with terminal illness by providing one-on-one support, as well as bereavement counseling and group support for families and friends of those living out their final days. For the Rock family, donating the house was the right choice. “When my brother and mother died in hospital, it was quite traumatic because there was no hospice,” says Cliff. “I thought if there was a hospice it would have given them better attention when they were dying. I’m very thankful that I donated it.” On the receiving end of the generous gift is executive director, Angel Elias, who says words simply can’t express what it means to the Mission Hospice Society. “We are truly thankful and in shock still that this gift has been given to us,” she says. “With this gift we will be secure for many years to come with our services to the community.” The Rock family have since

received many thanks for their generosity, including acknowledgement at the MHS Annual Gala last April, and at the hospice’s 30th year birthday celebration on September 30, which honoured them along with founding member Lilian Dudfield. “Our services have grown a hundred times larger than ever

imagined and a lot of that is due to the change that society has in regards to facing death and dealing with grief,” says Elias. The dedication and passion of

Christine Morrison Hospice Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

It’s been a decade since the Christine Morrison Hospice, a 10-bed end of life care facility, opened on the third floor of the Mission Hospital. In that time thousands of people, from patients to family members, have benefited from the services offered. Jayne Godfrey, a registered nurse and patient care coordinator, has been working at the hospice since it opened its doors in July of 2005. “Basically, people get to hear about hospice and Christine Morrison Hospice in particular, by word of mouth,” she explained adding dying is still a taboo subject for many. While many people’s idea of hospice is just a place to “go and die,” Godfrey said its not that way at all. “The focus is on quality living and quality dying and basically it’s a home away from home.”

It gives people “peace of mind” that their loved ones are getting quality life. “It treats the whole person, not the disease.” She recalls a patient who said to her, “I’m here living with cancer, not dying with cancer.” Patients are not confined to their beds or the facility itself. Many go out on passes or eventually go back home. “We are there to provide pain control and symptom management and social support that they need.” Despite a decade of care, Godfrey said there are still people, in Mission, who don’t realize there is a hospice here. One of hospice’s goals is to create a homelike setting for patients, allowing them to come and go as they please and to enjoy the comforts of home. While each room has a hospital bed, it also has a television, stereo, couch, phone and other comforts.

“We have so much space. We have a beautiful outside patio area. Patients are permitted to smoke,” she said. There is also a kitchen area for families to cook, art therapy, music therapy and pet therapy. “It’s patient and family focused.” Once people visit hospice, they tend to realize the different atmosphere from a hospital ward. “It affirms life, but it never denies death,” said Godfrey, adding they stress dignity and respect for the patient. Attitudes towards hospice is slowly changing as more people use the services. Caregiver often need the service as much as the patient. “Dying is hard work for the patient, but for the caregiver it’s huge. When they come to hospice, they are no longer the caregiver anymore. They can go back to being the wife, the husband the mother the daughter and leave the care taking to us.”

In the fiscal year 2014-15, 152 patients were admitted to Christine Morrison 2014-2015 Hospice.

HEAR THE BEEP WHERE YOU SLEEP: Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm. Fire Prevention Week • October 4-10, 2015

Smoke alarms: Know your options A message from Mission’s assistant fire chief Blaine Odenbach In recent years, much debate, and even some controversy, has ensued over the effectiveness of different types of smoke alarms. It’s important that Mission residents fully understand what types of smoke alarms exist, how they function, and the options available for their homes and families. Essentially, there are two different types of smoke alarms: ionization and photoelectric. An ionization alarm is typically more responsive to a flaming fire, such as a pan fire. A photoelectric alarm is typically more responsive to a

smoldering fire, as might occur where a lighted cigarette is dropped on a sofa. Combination smoke alarms, which have ionization and photoelectric capabilities, are also available. T h e Mission ODENBACH Fire/Rescue Service, in accordance with the non-profit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), strongly recommends either install-

ing combination smoke alarms, or both ionization and photoelectric alarms, in the home. For the best protection, smoke alarms should be interconnected, so that when one sounds, they all do. A licensed electrician can install hard-wired multiple-station alarms, or a homeowner can install wireless alarms, which manufacturers have more recently begun producing. An electrician can also replace existing hardwired smoke alarms with wireless interconnection capabilities. Also, it’s important to remember

As smoke alarm usage in homes has increased over the past few decades, the number of fire deaths has steadily declined. To further smoke alarms’ life-saving impact on the public, we urge all Mission residents to make sure they have the most effective alarm system possible, which includes ionization and photoelectric detection. Simple tips to keep you safe Here are some practical fire safety tips for each room in your home to share with you family: Kitchen P Avoid loose long sleeves when cooking. P Check kettles and toasters for damaged electrical cords and thermostats. P Use appliances that have an automatic shut-off. P Keep a timer handy to remind you when the oven and burners should be switched off. P If you take medication that causes drowsiness, do not use cooking appliances. P Use a temperature-controlled electric skillet or deep-fryer for frying. P Never leave your cooking unattended. P Use appropriate cooking appliances and keep them clean. P Keep a pot cover nearby to “put a lid on it” in the event of a fire. Living Room P Fireplace: always use a fire screen, ensuring it is the appropriate size for the fireplace opening. P Do not overload electrical outlets or use extension cords in the place of

additional outlets. P Smokers should check furniture for fallen cigarettes or embers, which can smoulder undetected for several hours before bursting into flames. P Keep matches, lighters and lit candles out of the reach of children. P Never leave lit candles unattended. Bedroom P Install at least one smoke alarm outside each sleeping area. For improved safety, install a smoke alarm in every bedroom. P Check electrical appliances regularly: electric blankets, heating pads, curling irons, radios, televisions, irons. P Bedrooms should be non-smoking areas. Basement and Attic P Remove all combustible and flammable materials from the basement and attic. P Store gasoline in well-ventilated areas. P Do not store propane indoors. P Clean chimneys at least once a year.

HEAR THE BEEP WHERE YOU SLEEP: Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm. Fire Prevention Week • October 4-10, 2015 FIRE SAFETY FAIR

Have an escape plan Statistics reveal that 78 per cent of deaths from fire occur in the home, with most of the fatalities taking place between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., while occupants are asleep. That is why it is critical to develop an escape plan, because one needs to react quickly since with a fire: P The smoke is black and very thick, making it impossible to see. P There is no time for indecision; an entire home can be engulfed within five minutes. P Most people are killed by smoke inhalation, not the flame of the fire. P The heat of the fire is extremely intense and can kill you instantly.

Last month, Mission Fire Rescue Service hosted a fire truck pulling contest (above) and invited the public to watch. This weekend, Fire Station #1 located at 33330 7th Ave, in Mission is hosting the Fire And Life Safety Fair on October 4 from 1 to 4 p.m. Everyone is invited to take part in the community KEVIN MILLS FILE PHOTO event, being held in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week.

DEVELOP AND PRACTICE A FIRE ESCAPE PLAN Install smoke alarms on every level. Keep smoke alarms clean and dust-free, checking them monthly.

Replace batteries yearly and alarms every 10 years. In order to be able to react quickly to fire, draw a floor plan of your home showing all possible exits from each room. Where possible, plan two exits: a main route and an alternate route from each room. Since the majority of fire deaths occur while you are sleeping, you should practice your plan at night as well, getting down on your hands and knees with a flashlight while crawling to safety. Heavy smoke impairs breathing, which is why staying close to the floor increases chances of escape. Heat and smoke rise – the air is more breathable and cooler close to the floor. Make certain that everyone understands that if they hear the smoke alarm, or someone shouting “FIRE”, they should immediately

evacuate the home. Designate a meeting place outside your home in the event of a fire. Small children unable to escape should be taught to open their windows and wave an article of clothing to attract attention. Instruct them to wait at the window until someone comes and to never hide from the fire in places like under a bed or in a closet. Sleep with doors closed. If children are frightened, parents can close doors after the children fall asleep and use a room monitor to hear them during the night. If awakened by a smoke alarm or a fire, instruct family members to feel the door for heat and check air at the bottom. If you don’t smell smoke and the air is cool, kneel and open the door slowly, turning your face away from the opening. If smoke is present or the door is hot, use another exit.

Installing your smoke alarm For best performance, an alarm should be mounted on the ceiling in or near the centre of the room, hall or stairway, and at the head of each stairway leading to an occupied area. Optimum location for wall mounts is at least 15 cm (six inches) from the ceiling but not more than 30 cm (19 inches) from it. Avoid installing where the temperature is less than 5C (41F) or exceeds 48C (119F). Keep alarms away from doors and windows. Never locate an alarm in front of an air register, fans or vents. Keep alarms at least 60 cm (two feet) from any corner. Do not recess smoke alarms in walls or ceilings!

Never paint a smoke alarm. Keep alarms 60 to 90 cm (two to three feet) away from light fixtures. Use a qualified electrical contractor. Never install the alarm in the electrical circuit except at the main panel. Alarms must also never be installed in a circuit connected to an on/off switch. Check the alarm when installation is complete. Test your smoke alarm monthly and clean it every six months. Mark it on your calendar so that you don’t forget. Ensure that power is being transmitted to the alarm and that it will activate in the presence of smoke. Test your smoke alarm by pressing the test button.

Question of the Week

Getting to BMW’s techno core in the Big Apple The extremely rigid body structure is a ground-breaking marriage of steel, aluminum and carbon-fibre (core) members. The end result is a 7 Series with a much lower centre of gravity and close to perfect front/rear weight distribution. The 750i xDrive and 750Li xDrive editions will soon be arriving in Canadian BMW dealer showrooms. A BMW 750i xDrive model will have a starting MSRP of $113,900, and a long-wheelbase 750iL xDrive at $117,900. Pricing, which should be lower, for the 740 editions will be announced closer to market launch next year. A redesigned 4.4 litre V 8 engine with TwinPower Turbo technology can produce 445 hp and rocket a 750i to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds (according to BMW). It’s teamed with an eight-speed automatic and a new version of BMW’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system in the 750i xDrive. BMW’s venerable 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder engine, which now also features TwinPower Turbo technology, will power 740i xDrive and 740Li xDrive editions. A plug-in hybrid 740e xDrive will also join the model lineup in 2016. Its 2.0-litre gas engine is paired with electric drive unit that’s integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission and it comes with a lithium-ion battery pack.
