here is a lot of talk, and concern, in recent days about refugees. Social media is abuzz with information — and in some cases, fear-mongering — about the issue, especially as Syrian refugees pour into Europe. Sometimes, as arguments grow heated, it’s valuable to step back and consider the difference acceptance can make, to put a human face on an admittedly overwhelming situation. Consider Ta Hay Tha, who is now 16 years old and living in Kimberley. Ta Hay Tha was born in a refugee camp on the border between Thailand and Burma (Myanmar) border. He was born disabled, with no arms or legs. It is frightening to imagine how hard this young man’s life would have been living with thousands of other desperate political refugees in a camp. But Ta Hay Tha was lucky. He came to Canada with his five siblings and their Mother in 2008, sponsored by EK Friends of Burma, as are all refugees in Kimberley and Cranbrook for the last 15 years. His eldest sister, August Paw had already arrived in 2007 with her husband and their first child. Today, Ta Hay Tha is a student at Selkirk Secondary School. He has a full, active life, partially in thanks to the compassion and kindness of strangers. It began of course, with Friends of Burma, and people like Shauna Jimenez, who have assisted the family with their transition and continue to be part of their lives all these years later. Ta Hay Tha has been given a special bucket ski so he can ski at the Kimberley Alpine Resort. Another volunteer is experimenting with building him ski legs. And now, Ta Hay Tha will be mobile in the summer as well. He recently received a battery-operated cycle, a one of a kind vehicle that he can steer with adaptable arms, and control and stop with his legs. It’s all due to “wonderful, wonderful volunteers” Jimenez says. The cycle has been paid for by War Amps Canada and was adapted for Ta Hay Tha by the Tetris Society, which specializes in making things work for the disabled.

Making the day bright with roses A rose by another name still smells sweet, and 150 dozen roses sweeter still. Flowers Galore Gifts and More in Kimberley are spreading the happiness around, with their Friends and Neighbours Day. Proprietors Paddy and Sue Brown gave away 150 dozen roses on Thursday. The stipulation was to keep one of each dozen and give the other 11 away, “to encourage conversation, begin or renew friendships, and inspire random acts of kindness.” And the community bought into that plan bigtime! “Over 70 dozen roses were given out in the first half hour!” Su said. “Everyone I see on the street with a rose has a big smile on their face and that’s what this is all about.”

New bike means new power for Ta Hay Tha Continued from page 1
Assistance was also received from Fun West Sports in Calgary. “I phoned ten different bike shops to see if they could work with the Tetris Society volunteers to make this bike,” Jimenez said. “Rob from Fun West was the only one who said he’d try. “The last three months we have been travelling back and forth to Calgary, trying to make it work. And they did make it work. Hearts and minds together made it work. “These wonderful volunteers had never even met him but they spent hours and hours on it.” The bike has enough power that Ta Hay Tha could go all the way to Cranbrook on the Rails 2 Trails. The smile on his face in the picture above will tell you what it means to him. It all started with Ta Hay Tha and his family being sponsored as refugees by Friends of Burma. “Like most refugees, they came seeking safety, welcome and inclusion,” Jimenez said. “It is hard to imagine how anyone could be afraid of these gentle people. However, our current federal government works hard at creating that imagined fear. They try to convince us that refugees are terrorists. The truth is that refugees are escaping terror. They seek safety, just like our own grandparents when they

came to Canada as refugees or immigrants. Remember, we are all former refugees or immigrants, unless we are First Nations.” And if Ta Hay Tha and his family had not come to Canada, their situation now would be dire, Jimenez says. “They would now be facing forced repatriation to Burma. Most refugees from Burma are terrified of being forced to return to the country they fled. After living in refugee camps on the Thai/Burma border for over a decade, they are about to be forced to return to Burma. The military government is still waging war against many of the rural, ethnic folks, like the Karen and Chin. There is a good chance they would be murdered by their own government, upon being forced to return. It seems the world has tired of their story — some call it compassion fatigue. The current Syrian crisis is constantly in the media and is reminding us that there are refugees languishing all over the world, seeking safety and being refused. Many Karen refugees, like Ta Hay Tha’s family, have been waiting for decades in refugee camps, for the opportunity to come to Canada and start new lives in safety. “I encourage everyone to get to know any one of the former refugees living in Kimberley

While snow has yet to fall, it’s time to switch out your tires and get your vehicle winterized. According to new legislation effective last year, winter tires are now mandatory on certain highways in the North, Interior, South Coast and Vancouver Island. The legislation, bourne out of the Rural Highway Safety and Speed Review, defines winter tires as those labeled with either the Mountain Snowflake Symbol or the Mud and Snow (M&S) symbol.
Much of the highway network throughout the East Kootenay is under the mandatory winter tire designation, with signage at high mountain passes and highways that see significant winter conditions. “It’s our annual reminder to drivers to ensure your vehicle has winter tires if you will be travelling on the designated routes, and to ensure the tires are in good condition, with appropriate traction,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “We want to be sure everyone is well
prepared as they set out for driving this fall and winter. This means getting your vehicle winter ready, and remembering to always drive to the road conditions.” Drivers who do not have proper winter tires on their vehicle driving on the designated highways can receive a $121 fine. Tires that do not have the minimum tread depth on their tires (3.5 millimetres) on the designated routes can also receive a $109 fine. Winter tires are specifically designed to provide better trac-

Eventful agenda for Cranbrook mayor at UBCM Tre vor Cr awley
It was an eventful conference for Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt, who took in his first Union of British Columbia Municipalities convention in Vancouver last week. Pratt, along with Councillors Tom Shypitka and Ron Popoff, represented Cranbrook at the annual gathering of municipal and regional government representatives, who gather to vote on resolutions and rub shoulders with provincial ministers and staff. The conference gives local politicians a chance to promote their own projects and funding priorities in their own communities, and Pratt had plenty of opportunity to bring up issues close to home. Priorities included funding for the dam at Idlewild Lake, logging in areas concerning the wildfire interface, while laundry services and highways also were raised to various government ministers and staff. However, it was floor resolutions that proved to be the most time consuming, said Pratt.
UBCM floor resolutions are policy statements submitted by local governments, which are voted upon by local government representatives. “I think they spent way too much time on resolutions,” said Pratt. “They have so many of them and I think a lot of them could be voted online maybe, and a lot of them are geared towards certain areas. “So there was one that was pretty controversial that I think the City of Richmond and it was basically a duplication of all the things we have—clean air and all that stuff, and if you read between the lines, I think they’re trying to stop the coal trains. “So the resolutions, I think could be fixed up, I think.” He came away with a positive reaction from Minister Peter Fassbender, the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, regarding some funding for Idlewild. And as mentioned in his State of the City address to the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce a few weeks ago, the city

A $10 million program for wildfire prevention was announced, which Pratt is hoping to
dip into for some work around Cranbrook. Specifically, when it comes to the wildfire interface, Pratt hopes to do some logging that won’t end up penalizing Canfor’s inventory. “The timber and the inventory, the way it’s shown now, the inventory shows that it’s high-value timber, when in actual fact, it’s not,” he said. “The percentage is offside, so economically, it wouldn’t make sense

for them to go in and log it, so we tried to make a case for some smaller contractor to go in there and log it accordingly to the strategic plan we have and not affect someone’s annual cut. “They said they’d have another look at that inventory and see what the ranking on it really was.” Other issues such as the hospital laundry services and the plan to relocate the it to the Lower Mainland came up. Pratt noted he wasn’t too enthusiastic about the possibility of keeping those services local after meeting with Ministry of Health staff.
“Met with IHA first— that didn’t go very far and then I met with the Ministry of Health’s staff after that and explained…I realize it’s a business decision but I didn’t think it was done properly with the way it was tendered with the $15 million bond and the fact that it’s four mountain passes that you’re going to be hauling dirty laundry to Vancouver, what’s that do for your carbon footprint, you’re going to have to have extra inventory because what if the roads are closed and I just think that they didn’t tender it to include every option, es-

pecially the rural areas,” Pratt said. While MGX Minerals Inc. recently made the announcement to buy the industrial land that includes the Tembec mill site, Pratt said that he and Economic Development Officer Kevin Weaver have been in talks with the company since January. Pratt wanted to sit down with the company and a few others to identify how everyone could work together to maximize the potential of the property and the industry. “They all have synergies that can work together, but they didn’t know about it, so I said, ‘Well, lets get together with everybody, get them all in a room and see what can happen here’,” Pratt said. “There’s lots of good things that are going to come out of that, it’s not just MGX, there’s other spinoffs that are going to come off that, so that’s going to be a big win for Cranbrook.” Pratt applauded the creation of a $75 million Rural Dividend fund for communities with a population under 25,000 and added that plans are in the works to get going on the new Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) that was created to promote Cranbrook and Kimberley.

What’s Up?
Letters to the Editor
With Gratitude
Often times, as it is human nature to do, we focus more on what we don’t have than being grateful for what we do. I’m a 64-year-old female who has enjoyed good health (with the exception of a few surgical procedures over the years) for the majority of those 64 years. That changed one day in mid-August of this year. With no warning, I experienced excruciating, non-stop pain in my right shoulder, arm and hand. I was diagnosed with Brachial Plexus Neuritis ‚Äî fortunately not a serious or terminal illness but a debilitating and extremely painful one none the less. Over the course of the following weeks, I would visit my family physicians office a minimum of once a week, spend numerous hours in the Emergency Room for pain management, the Ambulatory Care Unit for Intravenous treatments and eventually my last trip to the Emergency Room resulted in admission to the hospital (or the Surgical Day Care Unit as there were no beds available in the wards) in an attempt to get my pain under control. I got to see firsthand what wonderful, caring, compassionate and professional men and women make up the medical teams of our clinics and regional hospital. To all the staff of the Emergency Room who were on duty each time I visited (from the Triage nurse to the Admissions Clerk to the nurses and ER Physicians) - thank you for your care and com-
passion even though you often work under extremely trying conditions. Yes, the wait times can be extremely long, I would assume due to overcrowding, lack of family physicians, lack of staffing and lack of facilities to handle a lot of the patients who have nowhere else to turn but to an already at capacity Emergency Room for their health care needs. To the staff of the Ambulatory Care Unit, who take care of a tremendous number of patients each day, and the nurses of the Surgical Day Care Unit, who often work extremely long hours, thank you for your kindness, caring and professional manner. Last, but definitely not least, thanks to my family physician who worked continuously with me to find a combination of pain medications that worked and ensured I was seen by the travelling neurologist as.soon as practicable. I’m told the recovery period can be lengthy but, with proper medications, relatively pain free, so I am one of the lucky ones. While it is true that we have a shortage of physicians, nurses, care aids and facilities, what we do have is a team of dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to ensure that we, the people of the Kootenay Region, have the best health care that can be provided at this time. For that I am truly grateful. Linda Berukoff Cranbrook
October is Poverty Awareness Month
T
Kerri Wall
he International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, started by the United Nations, is observed on October 17 each year since 1993. World Homeless Day is observed on October 10th on every continent except Antarctica since its start in 2010. World Food Day is celebrated every year on 16 October by many groups concerned with food security since it began in 1945. To coincide with these international days, this October is Poverty Awareness Month in Cranbrook. Did you know that is a Cranbrook Poverty Reduction Committee working towards a poverty reduction strategy for our city? Did you know that poverty is an issue in our community? Since the elimination of the mandatory long-form census by the federal government in 2010, our understanding of poverty at a local level is cloudy at best. We are no longer able to measure with as much meaning as we used to thing like income distribution, employment, and education, or to compare the rates of these indicators over time to tell if we are making improvements. Sadly, Statistics Canada tells us one in seven people in our rich country lives in poverty. More disturbing is that over a million are children even though 25 years ago the House of Commons said it would eliminate child
poverty by the year 2000. BC’s child poverty rate at 11.3% is the highest in Canada, and has been the highest for eight out of the last nine years Here are some things we do know about the situation here at home: 19% of homeowners and 48% of renters in Cranbrook spend at least 30% of their income paying for their housing. Spending 30% or more of your household income on housing is considered ‘unaffordable’. In June of this year the Salvation Army served 600 individual lunches and provided 42 laundry loads and 87 personal showers. The Salvation Army provided 20 thousand school lunches during the 2014-2015 school year. The Cranbrook Food Bank Society gives out an average of 405 hampers/month. Hampers increased 5% from 20l3 to 2015. Of the people receiving hampers 40% are children. On Average 120 people step through Street Angels doors daily. Street Angels feeds between 20 to 40 people daily in the summer months (except Wednesdays) and 40 to 60 people daily during the winter. $1.00 a meal or a chore if you have no money. Average of 3 to 6 people do chores for meals daily. Canada has neither a federal housing plan nor a poverty elimination strategy. And unfortunately for us in British Columbia, we are the
only province that isn’t either working on a provincial poverty reduction plan or already implementing a provincial poverty reduction plan. So this work has largely fallen on the laps of individual communities. The good news is that Cranbrook is not alone. Here in the Kootenays the City of Revelstoke already has a municipal poverty reduction strategy that they have been working to implement since they completed it in 2012, and both the City of Nelson and the City of Trail are in the planning stages for their own. Many other cities in BC either have a poverty reduction plan or are working towards one. To learn more about reducing poverty here in Cranbrook, keep an eye on this space for further information on events during the month of October. Consider attending the 2015 Cranbrook Poverty Reduction Boot Camp on October 2 & 3. The cost is $25/person and includes lunch along with the training. For more information contact Darcy Victor at 250-421-1197 or darcy.victor@gov. bc.ca or go to http://www.fhcanada.org/Bootcamp to register. Kerri Wall sits on the Cranbrook Poverty Reduction Committee, and works for Interior Health as a community health facilitator, assisting local governments around the Kootenays with healthy public policy.
B.C. Liberals roasted over red tape day To m F l e tc h e r Black Press
Opposition politicians ridiculed the B.C. Liberal government Thursday for presenting legislation to declare the first Wednesday in March Red Tape Reduction Day. Some criticisms were comical, such as when Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver joined others in pointing out the irony of spending hours of legislature time to pass a law celebrating reduction of unnecessary procedures. Weaver quoted from outraged constituents posting protests on his Facebook page, comparing the situation to a Monty Python sketch. Others were more sombre. NDP MLA Adrian Dix read off a lengthy list of spe-

cial days that have been declared in B.C., and compared the latest addition to Holocaust Memorial Day His colleague George Heyman reminded the government about deregulation of farm and construction labour regulations that may have led to deaths and injuries. NDP MLA Carole James noted that the day could simply have been declared with a proclamation. Others suggested the bill was put before the legislature to pad out a thin agenda for the fall legislative session, or to set a trap for the NDP opposition to make them appear to be anti-business. The B.C. Liberal government has touted the reduction of regulations since it was first elected in 2001. Targets were set
and milestones marked, starting with the appointment of former cabinet minister Kevin Falcon as a Minister of State for Red Tape Reduction. B.C. Liberal MLA John Martin joined other government members in defending the bill. Martin said the government has changed rules to make it easier for parents to take their kids fishing, streamlined the process of registering as an organ donor, and made it legal to buy local beer and wine in some grocery stores. B.C. Liberal MLA Mike Morris said the day will raise public awareness of unnecessary regulations and encourage people to suggest ways to streamline government procedures.

St. Francis and the Animals B orn in 1181 or 1182, Francesco di Bernardone had a lasting influence on the world in his short life. Born the son of a wealthy cloth merchant, Francesco had no interest in being part of the family business. In fact, he was the leader of a group of young rowdies who would carouse until the wee hours of the morning, and then sleep through the day. Francis often paid the bill for these nights; as a result, he was very popular. He joined the army at the age of 21 or so and went to war. Assisi was defeated, and Francis spent a year or so in a rat–infested prison cell. That may have been the time his life started to change. When he was 25, his father took him to the town magistrates, complaining that Francis was disregarding his responsibilities. Francis agreed with his father, renounced all claims on his family. In front of the court, he stripped naked, placed his clothes at his father’s feet and said that from then on, God would be his father. He declared himself “wedded to Lady Poverty”, renounced all material possessions, and devoted himself to serving the poor. He claimed that God had called him to “Rebuild my church.” Francis saw his life’s work as waking people up so that they would focus on the pure and simple gospel and follow Jesus simply. Francis took literally the words in Matthew’s gospel, “Preach as you go, saying,
‘The kingdom of Heaven is at hand.’ … You have received the Gospel without payment, give it to others as freely. Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, no spare garment, nor sandals, nor staff.” (Matthew 10: 7–10) He and his companions would have no money and no property, individually or collectively. Their task was to “proclaim the good news, using words if necessary,” and declaring in word and action the love of God in Christ. Francis of Assisi had a Rev. Yme profound respect for all life, Woensdregt experiencing all of God’s creation as sacred. In his day, if one wanted to seek God, the traditional religious way was to turn inward. Monks tried to transcend this world, spending their lives in contemplating God, seeking to know God fully. Francis chose a different route. Instead of turning inwards, he turned outwards. The world was shot through with God’s glory. Francis discovered God’s presence and love everywhere he looked. God was to be found in the midst of this world, in the everyday moments of life, in the midst of a bountiful and wonderfully varied creation. Rather than fleeing the world to find God, God is to be found right here, in the physical, material world. The paradox of Francis’ life is that although he gave up material possessions, he valued the material things of the earth more completely. He treasured people

who worked with their hands — farmers, craftspeople, artists, bakers — and he valued the fruit of their hands. He esteemed material things not as having intrinsic worth in and of themselves, but because they displayed the immense variety and wonder of God’s creative imagination. Francis had a remarkable belief in the universal ability and duty of all creatures to praise God. His famous Canticle of the Creatures includes the words, “All praise be yours, my Lord, through Brother Sun … Sister Moon and Stars … Brothers Wind and Air … Sister Water … Brother Fire … Sister Earth … Sister Death. All praise be yours, my Lord, through all that you have made. Happy those who endure in peace.” Many of the stories that surround St. Francis deal with his love for animals. He died on October 4, 1226. That became the feast day for this saint, since that was the day he was born into glory. We will celebrate St Francis at Christ Church Anglican this Sunday. We invite you to join us on Sunday, October 4, at 2:00 pm for a blessing of the animals. Bring your animals and pets with you to church that afternoon for a special blessing. In the spirit of Francis, who called the animals his brothers and sisters, we celebrate the goodness of God, who calls us to live in peace with all creatures, and indeed with the whole of creation, treasuring it as God’s wonderful gift to us. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Chiefs visit Cranbrook as Ice forget opening weekend Kootenay Ice hope to execute on power play as U.S. rivals from Spokane invade Western Financial Place
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
The 2015-16 edition of the Kootenay Ice might be plumb full of youth, but there are still a few veterans around helping guide a relatively green group. Forward Matt Alfaro is one within the experienced bunch and after the Ice opened the season with a pair of losses against his hometown Calgary Hitmen, the message was pretty plain and pretty simple. “Pretty much forget about last weekend,” Alfaro said Thursday afternoon prior to practice at Western Financial Place. “We’re starting over with 70 games here to play and we’re going seven games at a time. “We’re just taking it weekend by weekend and moving on from last weekend. “We had a lot of guys in their first games and playing in Calgary, it’s an NHL-sized stadium and bigger arena, big crowd. Guys had to get used to that. We got that out of the way. Some guys got some first points out of the way, so that’s good to move on from.” For the most part, offense was tough to come by, both for Alfaro and the rest of his teammates, as the Hitmen outscored the Ice by a combined margin of 5-2 en route to a pair of wins on opening weekend of the Western Hockey League’s 50th anniversary season. Alfaro, 19, went without a point against the

Hitmen, but after a career-high 33 points last season, has found himself with the opportunity to take on a bigger role this year.
“We lost a lot of guys from last year. It’s a big jump for me coming from not really being a leader last year but having to step up,” Alfaro said. “I’m completely fine with it. I know I can do it and I know the guys look up to me, so I’m happy with that and looking forward to the challenge.” After sharing his thoughts, Alfaro was pulled into a special teams meeting led by assistant coach Gordon Burnett, while head coach Luke Pierce emerged with his out-
look heading into this weekend. Special teams was a particular focal point last weekend, as the Ice were blanked on 10 power-play opportunities over two games. On the other side of the special-teams equation, a 3-for-7 showing from the Hitmen power play on Friday didn’t leave the Ice penalty kill looking particularly shiny, but Pierce was pleased with how his group cleaned up Saturday, blanking Calgary on five tries. “Right now, we’ve done a good job of getting in the zone [on the power play], we’re just complicating things,” Pierce said of the man advantage. “We’ve got to simplify it a little bit. We had some outstanding looks in Calgary and what I thought should’ve been some goals. We missed the net on some, goaltender [Brendan Burke] made some great
BALTIMORE - The Toronto Blue Jays extended the celebration of their first AL East title in 22 years, resting their starters Thursday in a rain-marred 6-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Manny Machado homered twice for the Orioles, who took a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Drew Hutchison (13-5) before the game was delayed for 3 hours, 25 minutes.
Although the Blue Jays are still dueling with Kansas City for the best record in the AL - a distinction that provides home-field advantage through the post-season - Jays manager John Gibbons placed a priority on keeping his players fresh. They’re going to throw a lot of pucks at the net. We’ve got to make sure we’re real strong positionally. “I think we need to try, as best we can, to spend a lot more time in
the offensive zone. I don’t think that strategy is a bad strategy against any opponent, but especially against a team like that.” Notes: The Ice will once again be without defencemen Tanner Lishchynsky (lower body, day to day) and Tyler King (knee, indefinite). It was originally thought Lishchynsky would be ready to go this weekend, but his re-
covery hasn’t gone quite as expected, according to Pierce. The Ice will also be without RW Jaedon Descheneau, who remains with the Chicago Wolves -- the AHL affiliate of the St. Louis Blues… For the Chiefs, defenceman Tyson Helgesen (upper body, three to five weeks) is unavailable. During the month of October the team is hosting a fundraiser at each home game by auctioning off players’ one of kind jerseys in support of breast cancer. The funds raised from the popular event will also help to light a star atop the East Kootenay Regional Hospital when the Starlite Campaign launches at the end of November. “Several years ago we had a very successful jersey fundraiser with EKFH and the digital mammography campaign. That donation made a big difference to people with a
breast cancer diagnosis so we wanted to help again this year,” shares Dynamiters President Chad Koran. Funds raised from the month long events will go to EKFH and be dedicated toward helping with the purchase of a sentinel node biopsy probe. The concept of the sentinel lymph node is important because of the advent of the sentinel lymph node biopsy technique, also known as a sentinel node procedure. This technique is used in the staging of certain types of cancer to see if they have spread to any lymph nodes, since lymph node metastasis is one of the most important prognostic signs. It can also guide the surgeon to the appropriate therapy.
The team worn jerseys will be up for auction and bidding will take place at all of the home games in October. The bidding will close at the 10:00 minute mark of the third period at the October 25th game when the Dynamiters take on the Chase Heat at 2:00 pm. Make sure that you get your bids in for your chance to win your favorite jersey and support a great cause! For more information on the Kimberley Dynamiters visit www. kimberleydynamiters. net. Annual mammograms are widely recommended for women beginning at age 40. Some estimates suggest that more than 48 million mammography screenings are performed in the United States every year. Whether it is a woman’s first mammography or her twentieth, preparing for the appointment can ease anxiety and make the experience go more smoothly. The following are some guidelines to consider when preparing for a mammography visit. · Choose a reputable and certified facility. Select a radiology center that is certified by the FDA, which means it meets current standards and is safe. Many women also prefer to select a facility that is covered by their health insurance. Plans usually allow for one mammogram screening per year. · Time your visit. Schedule the mammogram to take place one week after your menstrual period if
you have not reached menopause. Breasts are less likely to be tender at this time. Also, schedule your visit for a time when you are not likely to feel rushed or stressed. Early in the day works best for many. · Dress for the occasion. Two-piece ensembles enable you to only remove your shirt and bra for the examination. A blouse that opens in the front may be optimal. Some facilities require you to wear a paper gown for the exam. · Watch your grooming practices. You’ll be advised to abstain from wearing powder, perfume, deodorant, ointment, and lotions on the chest or around the area. These substances may look like an abnormalities on the mammogram image, potentially resulting in false positive diagnoses. · Take an OTC pain medication. Mammograms are not nec(Continued next page)

Breast Cancer Awareness What do dense breasts mean for cancer risk? ers do not routinely use a woman’s breast density to assess her breast cancer risk, according to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Breast cancer risk is influenced by many things, including heredity, age and gender. Breast density is another factor that may affect cancer risk and the ability to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, say some experts.
A
ccording to the report, “Mammographic density and the risk and detection of breast cancer,” published by The New England Journal of Medicine, as well as data from the Nation-
al Cancer Institute, women with high breast density are four to five times more likely to get breast cancer. Only age and BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations increase risk more. However, at this time, health care provid-

essarily painful, but they can put pressure on the breasts, which creates discomfort. Breasts are compressed between a plastic plate and the imaging machine. This spreads out the tissue and helps create a clearer picture. If your breasts are tender, medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen taken an hour before the appointment may ease discomfort. · Expect a short visit. Mammogram appointments typically last around 30 min-
utes. The technician will mark any moles or birthmarks around the breasts so they can be ignored on the imaging. You’ll be asked to hold your breath as the images are taken. If the images are acceptable, you are free to go. But new images may be needed in some instances. Mammograms are now a routine part of women’s preventative health care. The procedure is simple and appointments are quick and relatively painless.
Density does not refer to the size or shape of the breast, and it may not be apparent by just looking at the breasts. Usually women do not learn they have dense breasts until their first mammograms. Dense breasts have more glandular and fibrous tissue. Density may be hereditary, meaning mothers and daughters can share similar breast characteristics. Dense breasts cannot easily be seen through on a mammogram, which can make detecting lumps and other abnormalities more difficult. This can lead to missed cancers or cancers that are discovered

at later stages. Women with dense breasts may require additional screening methods, such as a breast ultrasound or an MRI, in addition to yearly mammogram screenings.
breasts show up with more pockets of white on mammograms than gray fatty tissue in less dense breasts. Cancer also appears white, and, therefore, tumors can be hidden.
Education about breast density is gaining traction in some areas, thanks to informed women and advocacy groups like AreYouDense.org. Some states in the United States are part of “inform” lists, in which radiologists include information about breast density on mammogram reports so women and doctors can make decisions about extra testing.
In addition to more in-depth screenings, women with dense breasts can lower cancer risk by following these guidelines:
Even if a woman does not live in a state where density is shared, she can request the information from the radiologist or doctor. Dense

Women can consider breast density with other risk factors in the fight against breast cancer.
Many abnormalities found on a mammogram...
are not necessarily cancer, but rather are benign conditions like calcium deposits or dense areas in the breast. If the radiologist or a doctor notes areas of concern on a mammogram, The Mayo Clinic says further testing may be needed. This can include additional mammograms known as compression or magnification views, as well as ultrasound imaging. If further imaging is not effective, a biopsy, wherein a sample of breast tissue is taken, will be sent to a laboratory for testing. In some instances an MRI may be taken when mammography or ultrasound results are negative and it is still not clear what’s causing a breast change or abnormality.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You have a lot of energy when it comes to communicating with others. You might want to clear out any details of the workweek or make plans for the next few days. You have a lot to say about your day-to-day life, but understand that it is subject to change. Tonight: Out and about. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You might be worried, as your expenses seem to be soaring out of control. How you deal with a loved one could change once you gain a different perspective. You tend to go overboard when indulging someone. This person will love every moment. Tonight: Your treat. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Your hands are full, but fortunately you can process information quickly and come up with answers easily. Your smile will draw in someone closer. If you are single, use your innate charm well. Tonight: Wherever you are, trust that others are aware of your presence.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You could be in a situation that you would prefer not to be in. At the moment, try to detach and ride out the problem. You might be surprised by what comes up for you. At a certain point, you will feel as if you have had enough. Look for a better option. Tonight: Go for mystery! LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You always make quite an impression, and today is no different. In a meeting, you’ll show off your wit, intelligence and natural affinity for people. Don’t say “no” to an invitation that sounds too good to be true; it could go in your favor. Tonight: Where the crowds are. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You might feel pressured to take charge in your own way. You can do that, but be careful about creating much more work for yourself as a result. To pitch in one time is very different from having to do this same deed all the time. Be careful here. Tonight: The lead player. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might be at your wits’
Tundra
end and want to make a major change. Keep your eye on the long-term as well as the short-term effects of following through. You are more emotional than you realize. Follow your sixth sense -- it will point to the right choice. Tonight: All smiles. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) A conversation of depth between you and a loved one can’t be escaped, and could be worthwhile. You might want to set the stage for this talk. Relax more, and ultimately you will be quite happy with the results. Tonight: Create the mood you want at a place you love. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You could be dealing with one or more key people in your life. A boss, though well-meaning, might create some uproar. Others seem to be rather touchy. Refuse to get involved, and go off and enjoy your weekend. A friend will lighten up the moment. Tonight: Head home. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You have the ability to change your mind and head in a different direction. Your flexibility
surprises people who look to you as an authority figure. Your self-confidence allows you to head down a different path from that which many others would choose. Tonight: Say what you feel. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Your playfulness will take you down a new path, but before you go too far, you might want to change direction. Is this where you really want to be? Make sure it is, because after a certain point, you won’t be able to go back. A partner is very indulgent. Tonight: Be bohemian. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You could feel tense around a domestic issue. You know what you want, so go for it! Are you aware of what you will need in order to deal with this issue? Think twice before you cause a rift right now. Be willing to listen to the other side. Tonight: Head home early. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My husband and I are in our late 50s and have been married for 26 years. I have had the privilege of not needing to hold an outside job since I married, allowing me to be a stay-athome mom and raise our kids, who are now grown and out of the house. My husband and I have always been careful with our money, eating out perhaps once a month. We are easily entertained at home. His parents, who have now passed on, lived like paupers. However, upon their passing, they were able to distribute a lot of their wealth to their two sons and five grandkids. The money allowed us to pay off our mortgage and buy some stocks. My parents, on the other hand, have blown through retirement payouts and the reverse mortgage they took out on their home. My mom has always demanded the best, whether it is fine linens or a pair of jeans. It is beneath her to shop at a discount store. I now face their failing health and am angry about their poor financial planning. Whatever extra money my husband and I have came from his parents’ estate, and I agree with him that this money should not be spent on my parents. Am I a bad daughter not to help them financially? They dug their own hole. My dad won’t even file the paperwork for being a veteran. Having them live with us when their money runs out is not an option. My mother has tried to make me feel guilty saying, “Well, I got a job to provide for MY mother.” Her other saying is “The Lord will provide.” I think the Lord will provide a state-run nursing home. What do you say? -- Not My Parents’ Savior Dear Not: You do not have to use your in-laws’ money to provide for your profligate parents. Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean you should abandon them altogether. If Dad needs help (or encouragement) to fill out forms, surely you can do that for him. You might also offer financial advice, helping them take steps to put away any remaining income. But you are fortunate that there are facilities that will accept and care for your parents when they are infirm and run out of money, and you can visit often. Dear Annie: I have a friend who, after using her dinner knife to cut salad or other items with dressing, sauce, gravy, etc., wipes the knife with her mouth. I have seen her do this in fine restaurants and I cringe every time. How can I tell her how crude this is without offending her? -- Anonymous, Please Dear Anonymous: Correcting another adult’s manners is problematic. Being able to do so without offense depends upon your friend’s sense of humor and willingness to accept criticism. You can say, “Judy, aren’t you afraid you will cut your tongue doing that? Please stop, for my sake. I cringe every time for fear there will be blood.” But if you don’t think she will be amenable, we recommend you grit your teeth and ignore it as best you can. FENNESSY, Magdalene (Meg) May 5th, 1930 - Oct. 3rd, 2005
Ten years have passed since that sad day when the one we loved was called away. God took her home, it was His will, Loving wife, mother & grandmother. Long days, long nights, she bore her pain to await a cure but all in vain. God knew what was best, He took her home and gave her rest. It broke our hearts to see her go, but she did not go alone, for part uf us went with her the day God called her home. Still missed & loved.

1. Frequency: The online newspaper Web site user accesses the Internet almost twice as much as the general user. 2. Credibility: The credibility of the newspaper brand
extends to the advertiser. Fifty-nine percent of Web users agree that online advertising is more believable from a trusted Web site. Online, newspaper Web sites are the dominant local media site in most markets.
3. Targeted: If you want to focus on a particular backyard, advertising in an online newspaper is more personal, and more relevant because it is local. Newspapers also publish a plethora of niche sites (youth, women, movie fans, seniors, are illustrative) for virtually any demographic advertisers could possibly hope to reach. 4. Purchasing power: Sixty-two percent of newspaper
Web site users purchase online compared with 49 percent of general users. Thirty-nine percent of online newspaper users have incomes higher than $75,000; 65 percent own their homes. Fifty percent of online newspaper users have spent more than $500 online in the last six months, and 63 percent of online newspaper users prefer to find out about new products through the Internet.
5. Content: After e-mail, the most preferred Web
content is news, sports, financial information, entertainment news, and shopping – in that order. Sixtytwo percent of Internet users visit online newspapers for local news, compared with 39 percent for the local TV station Web site and 23 percent for the local radio station site. Not even Yahoo! or AOL’s Digital City can top this.
6. Retailers prefer newspaper sites: Sixty-five percent of retailers report that newspaper sites are efficient in assisting them in meeting marketing needs compared with other sites.
7. High profile: Research.net reports that, among top executives (CEO, CIO, CFO or owner/partner), Internet advertising ranked above over all other media measured for: “Where I prefer to find our about new products, “Where I prefer to receive information about companies, and “Where modern, up-to-date brands advertise. At the same time, these early adopters of technology also skew younger than the traditional newspaper audience. Forty percent of online newspaper users are aged 18-35. 8. Reinforcement: Seventy-six percent of online newspaper users also read the newspaper in the past seven days, and repetition increases awareness. The Internet Advertising Bureau found that, by increasing the number of online banners from one to two per week, branding results on three key metrics increased 42 percent making online a great, inexpensive way to increase the branding lift of traditional campaigns. 9. Quality: Seventy-five percent of advertisers generally said newspaper Web sites’ advertising was as good or better than other Internet sites.
10. Mix: A variety of recent studies have demonstrated the power of online, when included in a mix with traditional media, to elaborate the brand message. Newspaper print and online products combined have the highest penetration and most desirable audience of any other local medium. SOURCE: Newspaper Association of America
