an you imagine having to shop for a suit for your own funeral? That’s what Dennean Gould was doing about 14 years ago when dialysis wasn’t working and he had made peace with the fact that his kidney failure was about to kill him. “It’s bizarre to me now, looking back on it, but I wanted to look good for my own funeral,” he says, looking out over the water at Frank James Park on Sunday before the annual Kidney Walk. “But I’m a very lucky guy. My sister saved my life.” Things were pretty dire for Gould – as should be evident by the fact that he was shopping for a suit to be buried in. “I did dialysis for about three years,” he says, “and I just kept sliding down. It just wasn’t working. I was down about 125 pounds or something. I don’t consider myself a very courageous person, but it’s

amazing how when you’re faced with that, you just do what needs to be done. I had two young kids and I was still working, and you just do what you need to do. “I needed to shop for a suit to be buried in, so I did.” When his family found out what kind of shape he was in, they offered to help, as any family would. “I have five siblings in Manitoba, and they all said, ‘hey, whatever you need, we’ll give you,’” Gould says. “But I was, like, ‘this isn’t like lending someone your car for the weekend,’” he laughs. At first, Gould resisted. “I said, ‘no, these are the cards I was dealt in life, this is just the way it’s going to go,’” but then his sister asked him a simple question that convinced him to accept their help. She asked him if he wanted to see his kids graduate. That one question changed his view on the problem, and once he gave in, the testing began. His siblings began to get tested to see if they were a match, and if they were, to see how close that match was. There are six genetic markers the doctors look at to determine if a donor is a match, Gould says, and his sister matched all six. “Apparently, we’re basically twins, I guess,” he laughs. These days, Gould says, he’s “healthier

than I was, even in my 20s,” and has a revitalized view of life. He’s since burned the suit he bought to be buried in. He wouldn’t fit it anymore, anyway. “It doesn’t matter about my Harley Davidsons, it doesn’t matter about my work, or my vehicles, or the house,” Gould says. “What really matters to me is relationships. “Whether it’s with your kids, with your parents, with your spouse, with the neighbours’ dog, or with the reporter from the paper that you just met today. That’s really what it’s all about.” Barbara Krack wasn’t so lucky to have a direct match within her family, but thanks to the Living Donor Paired Exchange (LDPE) program, and the generosity of strangers and friends alike, she didn’t need one. The LDPE is just what it sounds like. People who need a kidney are paired with someone willing to donate one. First they pair up with someone who will donate one, but isn’t a match for them. They undergo stringent testing to ensure they are capable of donating. Then they join the list together, and when there is another donorrecipient pair in Canada that matches, the transplant goes forward. “So the anonymous

person who got my kidney,” says Jan Anderson, who donated her kidney on behalf of Krack, “was paired with the person who gave theirs to Barb.” This pairing system speeds up the process significantly, which is good, because the list to receive a kidney in B.C. is about seven years long. “This year, the walk is focusing on the transplant and donor part of things,” says Krack. “What I hope that people get out of it is the fact that you actually can get a kidney. You don’t have to go on dialysis. “You can find your own kidney. You don’t have to wait years and years for someone to pass away to get one. “And it makes all the difference in the world.” Oct. 9 will be the one

year anniversary of Krack’s transplant, and both she and Anderson are doing better than ever. Anderson says that although it’s a major surgery, she was in and out of hospital within a few days, and was back at work within six or eight weeks. “I do everything I want to do. I’m as active as I was before, and I feel fine. People can do this – donate – and still have a high quality of life.” Acting mayor at last weekend’s Kidney Walk, Coun. Charlie Cornfield, said one in 10 people are affected by kidney disease. “In a city like ours, that means there’s roughly 3,500 people with kidney disease of some form or a related disorder such as diabe-

tes – that’s me – kidney stones, urinary tract infections, hypertension or other issues. “It’s something that effects a lot of us, and currently there’s no cure.” He also said that although 95 per cent of British Columbians say they support organ donation, only 16 per cent have registered as organ donors, and he encouraged everyone in attendance to fill out an organ donation form and be a part of saving lives. The Strathcona Regional District board is considering a new service that some directors are concerned will fracture the board. Directors are looking at establishing a service to separate issues specific to the four electoral areas from the municipalities within the regional district. The electoral area administration service would include elections, director salaries and expenses, constituency costs and other activities that pertain only to the electoral areas. Tom Yates, the regional district’s corporate services manager, said the service would include programs that don’t have a service bylaw and are not required to be administered regionally. “The gas tax fund is a good example of a

program that, since it lacks its own service, must by default be operated under the general administration function of the regional district,” Yates said in a report to the board. “As part of the general administration function the entire board must participate in operating the program. Letters Are you kidding me? How much more “Big Brother” involvement do we need in our lives? Now you are telling us that the government should tax us on sugar? And that they have the right to tell us what to feed our children? There is no doubt that sugary drinks should be kept to a minimum, but where does this end? No we do not want a “nanny state” and yes, of course, we “treasure” our freedom of choice! This age of “helicopter” (overprotective) parenting also contributes to the change in childhood activities – kids are not allowed to be kids anymore. A glance around any Canadian community would confirm we don’t do that. If we did, we wouldn’t have hit this year’s tipping point: there are now more Canadians over 65 than under 15, for the first time ever. This will no doubt spark some concerned articles about our aging population, and even the possibility of “demographic collapse,” as though we were facing a childless wasteland of a future. We suggest that Canadian seniors will actually do pretty well in the coming years. It’s impossible to know with certainty what we’ll face in the future, but the next generations will certainly face challenges. They’ll be replacing many hands with few hands, as the number of children per family shrinks. They’ll have to be trained to work smart, not just hard. It’s going to be creativity, flexibility, and skill that wins out in the future. If we can’t make sure that the next generations are able to take their place in a globalized and often ruthless world economy, then who will take care of the growing ranks of seniors? The team followed a dominating 7-1 win over Comox on Saturday night with a 5-5 draw against Cowichan on Sunday afternoon. They are back in action at home again this weekend, hosting Nanaimo on Saturday at 11:30 and Victoria on Sunday at 12:15.

Midget A Tyees open season 1-1 on the road The Campbell River Midget A Tyees opened the tiering round of their 2015/16 season with a game against Juan de Fuca (JDF) tier 1 in Victoria on Saturday. Dominik Bellefleur started in goal for the Tyees and kept JDF off the scoreboard with great positioning and control of rebounds, especially when JDF went on the power-play. On the attack, Tyler Dickson squeezed along the boards on right wing, kept control of the puck then moved it to Sage Lim who fed a beauty saucer pass from the corner to Jake Hartley at the open-side of the net. Hartley buried it to put the Tyees ahead 1-0. While on the powerplay, Dickson moved to the puck on the faceoff and passed it back

to Doug Campbell on the point. Campbell put a howitzer on net that made it 2-0. Later with a two man advantage, fans saw Seth Parker put a wicked shot on net with a screen in front, putting the Tyees up 3-0 with the scoresheet indicating it was Lim’s goal with assists to Campbell and Dickson. Keeping their foot firmly on the accelerator, Hayden Cross put a clearing pass down the ice that Will McLean chased down. He took it wide and cut in towards the net before putting a low shot pad high for the far post. The JDF goalie made the save but couldn’t control the rebound. JDF scored an even strength goal on a scramble from out of the low corner that went

against the flow early in the second and narrowed the gap to 4-2 on an oddman rush that was executed to perfection with great passing to the open man for the tap-in goal. Luke Lund buried one late in the second to make it 5-2. The third period moved from the sublime to the absurd for some fans. After Nic Ordano deflected a shot to make it 6-2 for the Tyees, it seemed that the testosterone levels were too much for the officials to control. Both teams were in and out of the penalty box but there seemed to be a few more Tyees sent to the sin bin than JDF players. The game ended with a final score of 6-2 to for the visiting squad from Campbell River. The Tyees back were ■ ■ ■ ■

back on the road again, albeit it a shorter trip to Courtenay to play Comox Valley (CV) tier 1 on Sunday. Carson Borgfjord was between the pipes for this one and kept Comox off the scoresheet through the first period. Unfortunately for the Tyees, former Tyee Kyle Franscechetti was in net for Comox and he also kept the scoreboard clean. Borgfjord made a great toe save at the start of the second but couldn’t stop the power-play shot that went off his mask and into the back of the net soon after. Comox extended their lead to two at the end of the second period then added to it at the start of the third with a breakaway goal. There was 12:30 left in the third

when Campbell ripped a point shot past Franscechetti, which was soon followed by Dickson ripping one top shelf to get the game within one. Lim buried a shot under the bar to tie the game at three with 3:45 left on the clock. But then Comox took advantage of a scramble play. As Tyees pressured the puck, Comox made a pass from behind the net to the open man in the slot. The one-timer was in and out before Borgfjord even had a chance to get set for the shot for the game winner. The Tyees host Peninsula tier 2 at Rod Brind’Amour arena on Oct. 1 at 1:45 p.m. and then travel down the road to play Nanaimo tier 1 on Oct. 4.

Having played each of its opposing teams on the Island, the Marine Harvest Riptide U15 Girls soccer team is pleased with its first month of competition this season. The Riptide U15 Girls faced Juan de Fuca and UI Storm in games Saturday and Sunday, winning both match ups 3-1. That wrapped up their first encounter with each team in their VIPL age group. Riptide came out on top in every match up, earning 12 points in the overall standings, scoring a total of ten goals, and allowing three. That scenario might seem fruitful, but by no means does Riptide take future wins for granted as they look ahead to the rest of the season. t’s a pretty exciting time at my house these days. Rhyley started school this year and there have been some major changes to our morning routine, or should I say our lack of routine. In the past we got up when we felt like it, well when Rhyley felt like it, and got ready at a casual pace, squeezed in a ride semi regularly and I often turned my commute into a 90 minute mountain bike ride before I started work. With all the changes, and the new rules in place to get us to kindergarten on time, my riding mileage has taken a big hit this month. What has been a great surprise though is how many kids, parents and entire families I see riding to school almost every morning. It’s inspiring to see how many people have actually figured this out and made it work for

There are a number of professional fishing guides who work northern lodges in British Columbia and have returned to Campbell River to spend the winter vacationing or taking the winter off for hunting. From all reports, the fishing season was very good and 2014 may have been better. This summer had warm weather for the most part and many more American tourists came to Campbell River for the salmon fishing. I checked the catch reports on Monday at Painters Lodge and 18 fish were posted on the board with 10 chum and 8 coho reported. Zhu Zhu got a 14-pound coho and Larry Lajeuness got a 11.5 pound chum. Coho are averaging 10 pounds. The springs have tapered off but the area around the Green Can can be productive if the herring are around and the bite is on. Popular spoons are coho killers and coyotes and army truck and purple haze hootchies have been working.

On the local lakes, the fishing has been very good and if the weather holds, some nice carry-over trout can be caught at Echo and Maple lake. These two lakes will be stocked with catchable-sized trout in the first week of October. The trout being caught at the moment are full of snails and sticklebacks and they hit a booby fly if fished at the bottom – bring in the line slowly.

Kelly Kovach and his wife Sheridan recently moved to Campbell River from Ottawa and caught some nice trout last Sunday. The resident eagles that live in the area could be heard but stayed away from those catching trout. You could also hear the gunshots as those doing target practice in the area were shooting most of the day. I am a true believer that various fly patterns work most of the time in different situations. In the rivers this time of year spinning gear may out-fish those using flies but the fun factor to my thinking is stay with the fly. We all fish differently but the fun factor has to be there to keep fishing enjoyable.
