Tips for PAINTING FURNITURE to Save Money and Rejuvenate Outdated Pieces (NC) Do you have a piece of furniture that is outdated or no longer in keeping with your decor? Maybe it is a family heirloom passed down through the years or a fabulous flea market find. If so, you might want to think twice about throwing it out. All it takes is a simple coat of paint to dramatically transform the furniture in your home. You’ll be amazed by the dramatic results you get for a minimal cost. Plus, upcycling reduces waste, which is always a bonus. Make refinishing furniture a fun weekend project and give your outdated pieces a second chance at life with these simple steps: Lightly sand to remove any chips and ensure you’re left with a smooth surface. Brush off any remaining dust. Spot prime affected areas or bare surfaces before applying a uniform primed coat.

3

Apply one coat of primer and let it dry completely. Sand gently and brush off all leftover dust. Apply one coat of paint and let it dry completely. Sand any rough spots before applying the second and final coat. When selecting the top coat paint, note that glossier finishes are more durable.

what colour to use or only need to paint a small item, Para offers the Style colour test. You also have to think about how the painted furniture will be incorporated into your space, depending on the look you’re going for. One bright piece can create a bold statement, or several refinished items that work as a set can create a more uni-

form look. When you refinish furniture, you’re not only adding colour, you’re completely altering its style, which makes for a great accent or conversation piece in any space. So this weekend, get creative and transform an old piece into something you’ll enjoy for years to come.

(NC) For many Canadian families the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s a place where everyone comes together after a busy day to cook, eat delicious food and bond. However, for many homeowners and city dwellers too many cooks in the kitchen can be an issue for those with limited counter space and small prep areas. This is why making the most of every square inch is crucial. The experts at Blanco, world leader in kitchen technology, have some advice on how to make the best of any small kitchen without sacrificing function or style:

Choose multipurpose products For homeowners who don’t

have the luxury of a widespread counter, products that do double duty can be a smart way to save space and increase efficiency in your kitchen. Blanco’s Precis W/ Drainboard Silgranit sink includes a grid tray and offers an optional cutting board that slides over the sink or drainer board allowing for a distinctly functional work space. The grid tray acts as a multifunctional sink accessory that can hold hot pots, pans and dishes not only on the sink surface but also on the kitchen counter, and can even double as a trivet on a dining table. The Blanco Precis collection is made of Blanco Silgranit – Canada’s leading coloured sink material that offers exceptional strength, durability and innovative designs.

Think about smart installation

Products that combine style and functionality are the ultimate way to make smart use of your kitchen. With its crisp angular design, durable uniquely shaped work surface, and integrated stainless steel grid, the Blanco Precis W/ Drainboard sink offers the perfect way to free up space on your counter and capitalize on every possible inch. It also features a compact, practical, single-bowl design that is suitable for small kitchens. It can be installed as a topmount or as an undermount so you have the option to conceal the edges of the sink and achieve an attractive minimalist look that’s easy to clean − the ideal way to reclaim important workspace on your countertops.

Don’t sacrifice style

The biggest misconception that people have when renovating a small space is thinking that they can’t incorporate style. In fact,

just the opposite is true. Colour can be the ultimate way to add individuality by making either a bold or subtle statement. The Blanco Precis W/ Drainboard sink is available in six Silgranit finishes, such as anthracite, cinder, café, truffle, white and the latest trendy colour, metallic gray, to suit any décor personality. Furthermore, Blanco Silgranit sinks can be colour- matched with selected Blanco faucets for a unified look in the kitchen.

DESIGN YOU CAN SEE QUALITY YOU CAN TOUCH COMFORT YOU CAN FEEL ...STYLED TO SUIT YOUR TASTE

Create a room that reflects your unique sense of style with our huge selection of quality fabrics and accessories for your home and patio. We have a large selection of quality fabrics drapery panels, drapery rods, cushion covers, and pillow forms to use in a variety of ways to add style, texture, design and character to all of your favorite rooms

Contain Clutter

One of the greatest culprits in the kitchen for taking up space is the clutter that builds up on work surfaces. Try trendy organizational space savers like mesh baskets, colanders or trays to group things together but keep them out of the way while you’re working. They can even act as a decorative approach to help your kitchen function better, like having a soap dispenser matching your faucet or magnetic sink caddy for storing sponges.

Get your property ready for fall with these

QUICK TIPS! (NC) As the days grow shorter, it’s time to think about preparing your yard, gutters, windows, roof and heating system for the coming winter. Check these essentials off your list and you will be finished in no time:

YARD

Rodents and ants like to hide in piles of leaves or wood near houses. These should be removed to prevent pests from coming inside, especially in the absence of anti-rodent trim. Plants and perennial shrubs should be cut and covered to protect against the weather. Cover your pool to prevent debris from accumulating, especially when leaves begin to fall. Patio furniture should be put away or covered to prevent damage. Garden hoses and yard taps should be turned off; don’t forget to drain them as any remaining water may freeze and cause them to burst.

GUTTERS

It’s important to ensure that rain gutters are unobstructed. Blockages can lead to serious water infiltration. Keep in mind that water tends to travel back up to the roof, or fall near the foundations. The accumulation of leaves and debris is the main cause of clogged gutters. Install gutter protection like the Gutter Clean System. This particular type reduces gutter maintenance while preventing water infiltration caused by clogs.

WINDOWS

to increase brightness in the absence of sunlight. To improve your windows’ insulating performance, try installing weather-stripping film. To prevent water and cold air infiltration, make sure all weather-stripping is waterproof. If your home has skylights, make sure they are sealed and protected against leaks.

ROOF & CHIMNEY

Make sure your roof is in good condition and that any damaged shingles are replaced or repaired as failing to do so could result in serious water infiltration. If your chimney was not swept in the spring, have it done in the fall as it is important to reduce the risk of obstruction associated with creosote build-up.

HEATING SYSTEM

Fall is the perfect time to clean your heating system so you can prevent odours and ensure that things will continue to work smoothly. Stock up on fuel as well, such as wood and oil. If your home is equipped with electric baseboards, simply wash them. If you have a furnace, be sure to clean or replace the air filter, as needed. If you have an air exchanger, that filter should be cleaned or replaced as well. Vents in the home should be cleaned throughout the winter to keep them working smoothly. Be sure to check the screens as vents can sometimes be home to small rodents.

can cause more than a mess (NC) Plumbing issues are part of being a homeowner. Over time you are bound to experience a problem with your drains, toilets, or showers. However, one potential plumbing issue that most Canadians don’t think about is the possibility of the pipes freezing during the winter. Once the temperature outside goes below zero, be aware that the pipes could freeze. This could happen for a number of different reasons, however, it commonly occurs when the heat is turned down when a homeowner is away for winter trips, or when someone neglects to shut off the water leading to external faucets. “Don’t turn down your heat too much and make sure that you have either a remote system that monitors the temperature

Designers have their say on FOUR COMMON DECORATING MYTHS In this showhouse room, designer James Rixner used Hunter Douglas Alustra Woven Textures soft screen shades to mask unattractive outdoor elements while softly diffusing the light.

NC) Let’s face it, as countless home decorating tips abound, one’s first instinct is to take them as truths. Yet, why is it that we continue to listen to others’ ‘rules’ when it comes time to decorate our own homes? Hunter Douglas, a leading window treatment company, asked two top designers to describe what they believe to be the most common decorating myths.

MYTH #1: Don’t mix floral and plaid prints “Why ask the patch to match when the interest lies in the juxtaposition and the mix-and-match of colour and texture?” says Katie Leede of Katie Leede & Company. Leede suggests that when using several patterns in your home, try varying the scale of the designs, but keep to a simple palette to unify. “Use large florals and small stripes or tiny florals and big plaids,” she explains. “Think of your geometric plaids and stripes more like a solid or a texture that adds structure to the more playful, eye-catching floral. You can achieve this by pulling out one colour in the floral and make that the dominant colour of the plaid or the stripe.”

MYTH #2: A view is better without window treatments Despite common perceptions, window treatments can enhance a view rather than take away from it. Case in point, designer James

Rixner turned to Hunter Douglas Alustra Woven Textures soft screen shades when it came time to decorate the windows in his showhouse room. “The shades allowed for light and a partial view, masking the unattractive outdoor elements,” Rixner explains. “The fabric shimmered in the afternoon sunshine and the shades diffused the light. They looked so refined and elegant.” These window dressings also provide UV-protection.

MYTH #3: Pairs of furnishings must be placed opposite each other While Katie Leede likes having pairs, she doesn’t think one needs to go, in her words, “all Noah’s Ark and overdo it.” “I am starting to play with splitting up pairs of lamps and chairs so they aren’t opposite each other, but scattered through the room,” she reports. “The eye still seems to register the balance that comes with symmetry.”

MYTH #4: All ceilings must be white Contrary to popular belief, a pure white ceiling doesn’t always work. According to James Rixner, with certain wall colours it can make the ceiling look lower. “If you have richly toned walls and your ceiling is pure white, it will effectively give you a lower ceiling, something most people want to avoid,” advises Rixner. “It gives the eye too much of a jolt to go from a wall colour to a pure white ceiling.”

Kitchens to live in Submitted by Emco Ensuite

Today’s kitchen sinks are much more than just a place to wash dishes. Bold, bright and beautiful, they are a key element of your kitchen décor. From modern streamlined designs to old classics redone in contemporary materials, there are numerous options for the discerning home owner to “sink” their teeth into. And, the new kitchen sinks not only come in a variety of styles and materials, but in a wide range of colors as well. The standard stainless steel kitchen sink has morphed into a design feature that brings modern style to this central part of your house. For most of us, the kitchen is the heart of the home. More than just the place to prepare and cook food, it’s also used for entertaining guests and, often, for eating family meals. Especially here in the Okanagan, it’s the central part of the house, more living room than the actual ‘living room’. And, every kitchen is as different as the family that uses it. Like many other kitchen features, choosing a sink depends a lot on its potential use. Will it be used mainly for washing dishes? Or, with a dishwasher already in place, will it mainly be used in food preparation? Are there young children in the household who ‘help’ with clean up? Do you need a double sink? Or just a single? It used to be that these last two questions – single or double – were the only issues the owners of new homes, or those contemplating a kitchen makeover, had to consider. Yet, these days, kitchens are as much an expression of personal taste as a place to prepare and enjoy meals. While bathroom fixtures have been available in different colors for many years, having a kitchen sink in a material other than the traditional stainless steel, and in color to boot, is among the hottest trends in kitchen design. “There are so many options available to accommodate individual style. Style, shape and color can make such a dramatic statement. I had a client chose a purple cast iron KOHLER sink last year.” said Nova Hamilton, a consultant at The Ensuite, a division of EMCO Corporation, of the new trends in kitchen sinks. A premier Kohler dealer, Jen Harboe said Ensuite offers a full range of the styles, colors and materials that new

sinks are available in - everything from cast iron, Silgranit and fireclay, to the traditional stainless steel. One of the best new trends is actually an old material, re-vamped for the 22nd century: cast iron. “It is so durable,” Hamilton said. “It’s guaranteed not to chip and it doesn’t break.” Unlike stainless steel sinks that do scratch and aren’t totally stainless, which anyone who’s ever had to scrub one knows, cast iron stays looking great for years. The cast iron sinks also come in an amazing range of styles and colors. “You have to see it to believe it,” said Harboe. And that’s exactly what she did during her own renovation last year. She installed a Kohler under mount cast iron sink in a Frost color to incorporate her eclectic 50’s retro feel design. Another popular new material is granite. Stone countertops have become almost de rigeur for the modern, stylish kitchen, and the sink can now be incorporated right in, giving your kitchen counters a seamless look. Having a sink made of the same material as the countertop allows that part of the kitchen to flow effortlessly, blending style and function into clean lines that will complement any kitchen design. The new materials are heavier than the standard stainless steel, however, it is advised new home owners or those renovating their kitchens to ensure their cabinets are strong enough to support them. And, as in any other sink or fixture, it’s important to accurately measure the dimensions to ensure a proper fit. Both consultants also recommend choosing the sink and faucets before selecting your cabinets to ensure everything will look good together, and will fit into the cabinets. Faucets, too, are available in a range of designs to complement any kitchen style. You’ll discover everything from sleek, modern faucets that stretch and bend, to farmhouse and country-inspired looks complemented by retro-look apron front sinks. The new styles blend traditional style with modern functionality. Whether your family is large or small and regardless of its intended use, there’s a kitchen sink and faucet combination available to meet your needs, personal taste and kitchen décor. And, now your kitchen ‘living’ room can include a sink in ‘living’ color!

(NC) Shorter days and colder nights are around the corner, so now is the time to ensure that your home is winter-ready. Weatherproofing your home will help prevent heat from escaping through leaky doors and windows. Here are some tips from Hydro One to help you manage your energy use and capture potential savings throughout the cold winter: • Fill the gaps. Check the trim on windows for gaps between the frame and your house. As much as 13 per cent of your home’s heat loss could be escaping through the gaps. If possible, stuff insulation between the window and frame or try caulking around the window. • On sunny winter days, trap warm air inside by opening window coverings to let the warmth of the sun in. Once the sun goes

down, close window coverings to keep the warmth in. Think of your curtains as insulation for your windows. • Another inexpensive option is to build a barrier against cold by sealing your windows with indoor plastic sheeting in the winter. All you need is a hair dryer, double sided tape and some inexpensive plastic sheeting. • If your doors aren’t properly fitted, air is leaking outside. Rubber weather stripping can be an easy way to seal the door by creating a skirt on the door frame. • If you have a fireplace that you never use, consider getting it sealed as warm air is sucked out if the damper is open. If you do enjoy sitting by the fire, make sure you turn down your main thermostat. Fires can actually draw heat from the room up the chimney so your furnace has to work even harder.

(NC) We’ve all done it. Gone down the rabbit hole of Pinterest and countless other sites, spending hours looking at beautiful homes and yearning over them all. The aftermath is that you’re now inspired to redesign your own space, but don’t quite know where to begin. What will the design be? What style do I choose? A good place to start is with colour. Colour is emotional and has the ability to awaken the senses. And no colour radiates passion and vitality more than red, so why not start there? Bold red has long been making a statement in the world of fashion and beauty, but over the past few years, its various shades and tones have become very popular in the world of interior design. This is why we see more and more rich reds, often considered traditional, incorporated into contemporary designs. Tied to everything from food to fashion to history and politics, red hues are a symbol of power, passion, energy and life. But when it comes to using them in your home, the key is to know where and how to make them work. Red is the perfect choice for many a space, accent wall or dare we say ceiling. Try it in a dining room or bedroom for a luxurious look or even

on a front door – because nothing says welcome more than a bright red entrance. Another subtle way to incorporate red is to use it in a room with wood furniture or richly-saturated mahogany floors. It also accentuates a room with clean, modern pieces. When it comes to choosing a complementing colour, it pairs well with soft blush tones. Red is a classic, so embrace this colour trend and try it out in your own home. Keep an eye out for more colour trends coming this fall.

HOW TO TACKLE YOUR HOME’S

stubborn stains & odors (NC) From wall stains to washing machines, indoor stains and smells can be a challenge to tackle. Luckily, there are surprisingly simple methods to erase them for good. Here are a few tips to freshen up the most stubborn spots in your home.

• Conceal wall stains with primer Have your kids made artwork of your walls, or has your leaky roof caused a water-damaged mess? Tough wall stains like these can be hard to get rid of, but are easily sealed by applying a high-quality, stain-blocking primer. For example, KILZ Hide-All Primer Sealer covers problem areas on surfaces from drywall and woodwork to concrete and brick. It even masks over dark stains without allowing color to bleed through. With only a one-hour drying time before applying a topcoat, this is the perfect one-weekend project to cross off your list. KILZ primer can also seal off odors caused by pets or smoke.

If your fridge requires an extra-deep cleaning, unplug it while you work to avoid wasting energy. Before putting all of your food back into the fridge, wipe down the exterior of each jar or container with a damp cloth. Repeat this process every two or three months for the best results.

• Make grout lines shine Tile surfaces are prone to dirt and debris, especially in bathrooms or high-traffic areas. To keep tile looking fresh and new, grab an old toothbrush or electric toothbrush for a deeper scrub. Before you start, wash the surface with water then mix two parts baking soda with one part water. Scrub the resulting paste into the cracks and crevices, then douse with water again. If the grout lines are stained, spray a mixture of equal parts vinegar and warm water onto the area and brush. After a final rinse, the grime will be gone.

• Prevent a moldy • Eliminate refrigerator washing machine odors If you own a front-loading

Fall decorating tips

TO WARM UP YOUR HOME (NC) When fall comes, the days get shorter and there is a chill in the air. We start decorating our homes again, anticipating the holiday season and the long winter ahead. Kim Kiner, an expert with Hunter Douglas, a leading window treatment company, offers the following tips for warming up your home for fall. Layer: Put a throw at the foot of the bed or at the end of the sofa. Pull out a tray and dress it with candles, fresh apples, pears and branches and use it as a centrepiece for a coffee table or a dining room. Take a napkin and layer it over the back of a dining room or kitchen chair with the points going down – tuck it in and put ribbon around it. Bring rich colour inside: Look and see where you need a fresh coat of paint – white is not a top choice as the weather cools – it can be replaced by a taupe or gold – layering with paint colour. Add pillows in rich hues as well. Update your window fashions in new tones. Hunter Douglas Solera

Soft Shades, the only soft shades with a cellular construction, come in an array of colours, from fresh neutrals to inspiring, fall-like hues. As the daylight recedes, layer your lighting: Invest in new lamps and wall sconces in the bathroom and the bedroom. If you are over the age of 50, you need twice as much light to see as you do at 20. Take a hot glue gun and put beaded crystals on the bottom of the lampshades to add va va voom. Make the most of the daylight streaming in with products like Silhouette window shadings that diffuse light while drawing it deeper into a room. You can tilt the vanes and direct light exactly as desired, helping you save on electricity. Add warmth: A good way to add warmth is with texture – it is casual, comfy and cozy. Area rugs come in wonderful textures and colours. By the fireplace or in the entry, put a wicker basket with moss balls, hedge apples, pumpkin gourds and rattan-covered balls. Take advantage of all that Mother Nature has to offer.

nutrients to survive the harsh months ahead. Also, the clippings from the final mowing should be left on the lawn as mulch to help protect the delicate crowns of the grass plants and lock in nutrients. • TAKE IT INDOORS: Some plants fare better indoors during the winter but before you make the switch, immerse the pots in lukewarm water to help remove insects and prevent other unwanted critters from transferring into your home. Also check the leaves of the plant and give them a quick rinse as an added precaution. • STORE YOUR TOOLS PROPERLY: Last, but not least, remember to clean all your gardening tools thoroughly before storing them indoors. Use soap and water to remove residual dirt and dried-on materials from tool surfaces. Be sure to drain the fuel from mowers as gasoline left in fuel tanks will break down, leaving deposits and build-up that will plug up the fuel system.

LA

(NC) The Canadian winter climate can take its toll, but with the proper fall maintenance you can set your lawn and garden down for a rest. To ensure your garden survives the winter and has the ultimate spring awakening follow these simple steps: • CLEAN UP THE AREA: Be sure to remove any dead foliage, this will prevent a difficult spring cleanup and overgrown weeds. Harvest everything above ground in the vegetable garden to avoid attracting animals and pests. • PROTECT YOUR SHRUBS: To help keep your shrubs healthy, generously water them before wrapping in burlap for the winter. When wrapping, work your way from the bottom up to prevent the bending of branches in an unnatural form. • FERTILIZE BEFORE THE FROST: Your grass will start to slow its growth so it is important to fertilize it with the appropriate

Do you love your tile, but hate your grout? Fusion Pro® Stain proof grout is the answer. Submitted by Arden Tile

If there is one common complaint from homeowners, it would be that their grout starts to look off color and dirty after a few years, even after grout sealing it. Wear patterns show up on the grout in high traffic areas like hallways and in front of the kitchen or bathroom sink. Messes from wine, cooking oil, pet mistakes seem to penetrate and permanently stain grout. Scrubbing with industrial cleaners and bleach work with limited success. Questions then arise, “What is the best sealer?”…“How often do I need to seal?”… “Is there a better solution?” Custom Building Products saw the need to develop a completely stain-proof grout. Fusion Pro® is what they came up with. Some grouts say stain resistant, but do not offer the defense necessary to stop oils and heavily pigmented

liquids from soaking in and staining. Fusion Pro® is a professional grade grout that features unsurpassed stain resistance with no sealing required. Its Single Component® formula is ready to use, color consistent and easy to spread and clean. Fusion Pro® can be used in commercial and residential environments, interiors and exteriors, and on walls and floors. Its patented formulation can be used on all tiles and has built-in Microban antimicrobial product protection. Fusion Pro® grout comes in all the colors traditional Custom grouts come in. There is also a designer series that incorporates a sparkle into the grout for added bling. It looks great in many of the new glass mosaics available. Visit us at Arden Tile if you have any questions concerning Fusion Pro® grout or any of your tile needs.

HOW TO AVOID

expensive roof repairs (NC) Canada’s harsh weather can take its toll on your home. Year after year, the wind, rain, snow, ice and blistering sun take years off your home’s life. It’s no wonder that the aging process is most noticeable and expensive on the area that suffers the most – your roof. On average, Canadian homeowners replace their roofing material every 18 years at an average cost of $4,500 per project, based on a standard 1,000 square foot bungalow roof. The Canadian company Techniseal has developed an economical and environmentally-friendly alternative to replacing roof shingles. This innovative product is called Elastomeric Roof Coating and is branded under RoofKeeper for asphalt shingles and RoofSkin for sheet-metal roofing. This microporous, acrylic emulsion is applied directly to the roofing material, just like a reg-

ular paint. Specially formulated for severe climates, it offers an ultra-adherent protection against weathering. The innovative coating protects your roof for up to fifteen years and saves Canadian homeowners the cost of replacing pricey aging shingles and sheet metal for the roof. For as little as one sixth of the cost, you can now avoid the costly replacement of an aging shingles and sheet metal roof. The product is actually guaranteed for up to 10 years; but your roof will be protected for much longer. Because the coating is opaque, it gives you the unique feature of improving the appearance of your roof with a range of colours including black, brown, green, grey, red, blue, white, aluminum and clear. Because it is UV-resistant, it preserves its colour and protective qualities throughout its lifetime.

Your Style Fall Sunday, October 4, 2015 - The Morning Star Z17

Before actually applying the product to the roof, it is recommended to first add repair compounds such as Techniseal’s Instant Leak Sealer or Waterproof Sealant around any openings such as the chimney. Repair or replace aged or damaged shingles, remove moss and mildew and clean out the roof surface and the gutters. The application of the coating is rather easy; simply paint it over your old asphalt shingle or sheet-metal roof with a roller or an airless sprayer.

The product is also environmentally sound. It’s a 100 per cent water-based, non-toxic polymer coating that contains no tar. Since it avoids the premature discarding of asphalt shingles and extends the life cycle of the original roofing material, it helps keep away millions of tons of waste from landfills. The elastomeric roof coating can be used on any sloping roof and is ideal for protecting homes, cottages, garages, and sheds.

Amp up your home entertainment system all eyes will be on the television, you need a killer screen. Today, OLED technology is so advanced that it rivals the traditional movie theatre experience. If you don’t already have one, try LG’s 4K OLED TV. The stunning contrast, amazing (NC) Watching a movie together has always been a fun and simple way to spend time with your family. However, as content becomes more easily accessed online, we find ourselves glued to smaller, portable screens rather than enjoying great media content the way it was meant to be experienced – on a great TV. Fortunately, nowadays it’s just

as easy to access streaming services on your television as it is from a laptop or tablet. With all this new technology, it’s time to bring back the classic movie night with all the modern upgrades we’ve come to know and love. Before hosting your family and friends, consider the following tips: The screen is essential. Since

colour and flawless picture will transform your at-home viewing experience to lengths never-before possible. Pick the perfect movie. LG’s 2015 televisions come with webOS 2.0, which easily connects to streaming providers, such as Netflix. This means that you can put away those old DVDs and browse through tons of different options to make sure you pick a flick that the whole family will love. Snuggle up. The best part about watching a movie at home is that you can stay in your pajamas. Put on your favourite onesie or sweat pants and, to get even cozier, grab all of the pillows and blankets you can and settle in for the perfect movie night at home.

HOW TO AVOID (NC) Water damage can easily turn into a terrible nightmare like this: Melanie Smith of Toronto says she woke up one morning to an inch of water across her basement floor. This catastrophe was not part of her weekend plans, nor were the hours of clean-up and repair that were needed. Many of her treasured possessions could not be replaced. Some of the risks of water infiltration, however, can be prevented. Regular inspection and rigourous maintenance of the roof, gutters and foundation will give you the best protection since problems usually start in those areas.

Be sure to check your roof regularly. It is essential to replace or repair any damaged shingles as water can easily seep through cracks. Trees near the roof should be trimmed to prevent branches from causing damage by rubbing or falling on it. In winter, it is a good idea to regularly remove accumulated snow and ice which create considerable weight on the house. It is also important to clean the gutters since accumulated leaves and debris can easily clog them, causing water to rise to the fascia board and roof. Furthermore, it is necessary to avoid any overflow caused

damaging water infiltration

by obstructions, as this excess water falls very near the foundation. “A simple and effective way to prevent debris from clogging gutters is to install gutter protection,” says Jonathan Boulanger, the product development manager at Alu-Rex, a leading name in rain gutter products. Take time to learn about this option first however. For example, Boulanger warns against the low-end gutter protection systems because large holes allow leaves into the gutter making the installation useless. Instead, choose a product that offers the perfect balance between water drainage and debris filtration. In the same way, home foundations are also vulnerable to water infiltration and must be protected. First, check for cracks, since any opening in the foundation can cause major problems. “Ensure that water is directed away from the house,” Boulanger continues. “A slight slope in the ground a few feet around the foundation is usually sufficient. Also, make sure that downspouts carry rainwater away from the foundation. To that effect, you can use one of our downspout extensions. They will carry water far away from the home, preventing water infiltration in the foundation.” Most of all, avoid unnecessary hassles, he says. Make sure to regularly inspect the roof, windows, gutters and foundation to avoid costly repair due to negligence. A house is a significant investment, protect it.
