10 neat things...forcing bulbs 1. You Can Force Me! Throughout the winter months, you can encourage bulbs that normally bloom outdoors in the spring to bloom indoors in a process referred to as ‘forcing’. The technique is simple, making it a great project for any gardener, from beginner to expert. Almost any type of spring-blooming bulb can be forced, although generally early-bloomers tend to do best. 2. Keeping it Chill. Before bringing them into your warm living space, bulbs intended for forcing need a cold treatment. For this, bulbs should be planted so that they are just under the surface of the soil, watered well and then put into a dark and cold area, such as a cold (but not freezing) garage, an unheated basement or even a fridge. 3. Timing is Key. It depends on the bulb when the plant is ready to come out of storage. Generally, they are ready to grow in your home when the sprouts appearing from their tops are firm and well-developed and there is a good supply of healthy roots. It is important to gradually let the plant adjust to the warm house, starting them off in the coolest spot possible.

4. Who Needs Soil Anyway? The planting soil you use for forcing bulbs should be light and airy, containing additives such as peat moss or vermiculite. Most bulbs are grown in potting soil, but they can prosper in just about anything, even a bunch of decorative rock. Important is that water can drain away easily so the bulbs will not rot. 5. There is no White like Paperwhite. Unlike most other daffodils, the paperwhite narcissus does not require a cold period before forcing. The bulbs are simply planted in a container with soil or decorative rock. After you have added a little water, they will rapidly grow roots and shoots. The small, fragrant flowers usually open up within two to three weeks of planting. 6. What Smells so Good? Hyacinths are often forced in special glass vases that have a pinched neck. The bottom of the glass is filled and the bulb placed on the top with the bottom of the bulb just above, but not touching the water. After sitting in a dark, cold area for several weeks, roots will fill the glass and the top will have grown an inch or two. That is when the vase can come out and the hyacinth will start unleashing its full show and sweet scent.
7. Colour for Dull Days. With their many bright colours, tulips are great bulbs for bringing some colour into your winter home. Generally, they need between 9 to 15 weeks from the time they are planted until they start to bloom, including their time in cold storage. Crocus have a slightly shorter chill time, consequently blooming a bit sooner. 8. Layers of Fun. Traditionally, shallow bulb pans have been popular vessels for forcing bulbs. In recent years, one trend has been to use deeper clay or plastic pots and planting in layers, perhaps even mixing several different types of plants. This method can give you longer bloom times and more interest with clever combinations. 9. More is More. For a stunning effect, it is best to plant as many bulbs as will fit into the container without touching each other. If you place bulbs, especially tulips, on the outside edge of the pot with their flat side facing the pot, it will give a fuller look when the bulbs flower. 10. The Show is Over. Once forced bulbs have completed their flowering, it is best to discard them. One exception are daffodils - they can often successfully be planted out and might be blooming again in the following season.

Views Letter: Remembrance and democracy
Remembrance Day will soon be upon us again in respect for the millions of young men and women who sacrificed their lives in the two Great Wars so that we could live in freedom. If those men and women knew how our governments treat us and how complacent we have become today, they would roll over in their graves. We are unaware and take for granted that it is illegal for our Federal Government to dictate and intimidate the owners of businesses into collecting taxes from their customers upon a purchase or face the consequence. It is also illegal for our government to have the employers take tax deductions off the employees’ pay cheques twice a month. Think about it. Why should we be lending a portion of our hard earned salary, interest free, to the Federal Government in order for it to squander the money on other country’s wars and charities while we suffer cuts in services like medicare, education, transfer funding, etc. Not to mention the government’s gold-plated pensions for the MPs and the fraudulent acts amongst the ranks. Then our government works out some kind of ‘cooking the books’ budget so that some of us will get some of that money we’ve been lending them all year and some don’t get any back and some have to pay more. Personal income tax time should be a
one-time transaction in every February. We are given a ridiculous multi-page form to fill out with figures to be added with totals to be subtracted, then multiplied, then subtracted again. It is like they think they know what they are doing and we put up with this. Besides the personal income tax there is another dozen or so invented taxes on everything from tires to gasoline to batteries to appliances to airport taxes. All of which bring in the government millions of dollars per day and it still has a deficit! The same for our Provincial Government that has accumulated the largest debt in the Province’s history. Our politicians are not business minded people. They have the attitude that ‘there’s more where that came from.’ They don’t pay tax and they got a government credit card. They all make over $130K plus a year and after two terms they approximately $90K to $100K pension per year - all on us. Looking back over the years, I think of PM Diefenbaker and what he did with the highly successful Arrow jet a disaster, he scrapped it! PM Mulroney and his GST. Immediately after it was imposed, dozens of Canadian manufacturers moved to the USA. We got left holding the bag. PM Harper, purchased four worn out submarines from Britain and spent billions on refitting them. Only one

in service. The other three are a write off. PM Harper accepting two panda bears that cost $1 million per year to feed! Will we ever get someone with common sense and integrity? Canada has its own technology to manufacture its own jet fighter airplanes. Why are our purchased CF-18s getting old and ready to be scrapped? Our governments have democratic elections. A majority vote gets an MP for our constituency who doesn’t respond to our written concerns of his party’s policies. A majority vote gets in a MLA for our constituency who places ads in the local paper, such as ‘shop locally for the economy and to keep people employed,’ then goes off to Communist Cuba for two or three weeks for a winter vacation. The only democracy we have, begins at 8 a.m. on election day and it ends on 8 p.m. that same day. We do not live in a democracy. We live in a dictatorship both federally and provincially. We are not free. We are victims of our government’s continuous irresponsible squandering debt. Remembrance Day will soon be here. A day for all of us to be ashamed of what we’ve become. In order to live in a democratic environment we have to exercise democracy. We have to tell our governments that they work for us and this is the way it is going to be. And this has got to be the voice of all of us. We want a written contract before we vote. ~Michael Bunn, Creston
Letter: A response to Mr. Moody As a father whose son is currently serving in the Canadian Forces and a retired RCMP officer with three generations of RCMP in my family, I can assure you that I have nothing but the utmost respect for those who have served our country in uniform. The comments by Mr. Moody are quite upsetting to me. July 9, 2012: Mr. Moody wrote the Department of National Defence (DND) and me. The next day my office contacted Mr. Moody
and asked for additional information. Mr. Moody acknowledged by email saying, “Thank you for your speedy response.” July 23, 2012: DND advised Mr. Moody that his correspondence was being forwarded to the Minister of Veteran’s Affairs. September 24, 2012: Veteran Affairs Minister wrote Mr. Moody and informed him the criteria for the medals had to be created, following which the medals had to be designed and manu-
erans provided to the family plus a flag for the funeral ceremony. April 15, 2013: Minister of Veterans Affairs announced the “Bomber Command Bar –War Medals” were available and families could apply. The first bars were available August 2013, nine months after Mr. Dakin passed away. Mr. Moody confirms the Dakin family received the medal. In light of these facts, I’m surprised that Mr. Moody chose to make his unfair, unfounded accusations during the election. ~David Wilks C a n d i d a t e , Conservative Party of Canada

Butt Out Campaign an area-wide success
Photo submitted
Students from College of the Rockies joined Tamarack Centre on September 23rd, 2015 for the second citywide cleanup. On September 23rd, 2015, Tamarack Centre launched the second phase of their Butt Out Campaign. Joined by College of the Rockies, and Wildsight Cranbrook/ Kimberley, and a crew of dedicated consumers, Tamarack Centre initiated a citywide cleanup scouring the city for disposed cigarette butts. Tamarack Centre first launched the Butt Out Campaign in April 2015 in an effort to reduce the toxic waste left behind from leftover cigarette butts. Tamarack Centre’s citywide cleanup proved to be a success. The team collected 49.57 pounds of tobacco waste bringing their number to 267,573 cigarette butts collected since the launch of their campaign in the spring. Tamarack Centre hopes to double the weight of cigarette waste collected by the time their campaign wraps in May 2016. “We’re so proud of our team and what we have accomplished so far,” said Cristina Borgogelli, Marketing Manager at Tamarack Centre. “We are almost half way to our goal of collecting 250 pounds of waste by spring.” Tamarack Centre launched the Butt Out Campaign in April, asking community members to help reduce waste by collecting cigarette butts from their homes, offices and restaurants. They also initiated their first “buttpick-up day” on April 13th and collected an initial 49 pounds of cigarette waste.
When the Butt Out Campaign launched, Tamarack Centre

hoped the people of Cranbrook would see a positive impact on their community. At the second citywide cleanup they enjoyed engaging with active members of the community and seeing new volunteers join the cause. “It’s been great to see the people of Cranbrook come together to affect a positive change on their community,” said Borgogelli. “Our goal is to not only keep the Tamarack Centre property clean but to reduce and recycle waste from downtown, parks and other recreation areas. We hope to encourage smokers to dispose of waste in the Butt Out Canisters and bins around town
and are happy to collect and send out the butts for recycling. When we heard that butts could be recycled, Tamarack Centre jumped on board to help in this nation-wide effort. Locally we have extended this collection to Cranbrook and feel that more can be done to keep butts off of the ground. With the help of the community we know we
can continue to make a positive impact. The butts will be sent to Terracycle which will recycle them into plastic pallets used for shipping goods. For more information on how to get involved, call the Tamarack administration office at 250-4262231, and to join the cigarette brigade by visiting: www.tamarackcentre.ca.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)
CTS is the most common and widely known example of what is called an entrapment neuropathy. As the name implies, this is where a peripheral nerve becomes entrapped, caught in a tight space where it gets compressed, injured and swells. Entrapment neuropathy can cause a wide range of different types of pain. Nerve entrapment is more common than is appreciated and is an underlying cause of chronic pain syndromes including whiplash injuries, shoulder and neck pain in general, sciatica, fibromyalgia and the list goes on. In the case of CTS, it is the median nerve, which travels from the forearm through the wrist and into the hand, that becomes injured. The median nerve travels underneath the transverse carpal ligament where there are many other nerves, tendons, blood vessels and bones which makes for a tight fit. It is widely believed that the most common cause of median nerve injury in CTS is work that involves lots of hand and wrist repetitive movement. Women are
three times more likely to get CTS perhaps because the carpal tunnel itself might be smaller in women. Once compressed and injured, the median nerve causes the burning, tingling, aching and sensation of swelling in the wrist, palm and fingers. Symptoms often begin at night due to sleeping with bent wrists. Treatment should begin as soon as symptoms start so as to reduce the likelihood of chronic nerve injury and often starts with rest and wearing a brace that stabilizes the wrist to minimize nerve compression. Surgical treatment involves cutting the transverse carpal ligament (see image) to decompress the median nerve. Neural prolotherapy treatment involves an injection in the area to bath the injured nerve in a dextrose solution. 5% dextrose has the unique ability to relax and heal injured nerves and neural prolotherapy is a safe and very effective way to treat CTS. Biological antiinflammatories can help by reducing general inflammation and speed CTS recovery. I prefer biologicals like Boswellia, Curcumin, Jamaican Dogwood and Bromelain as they reduce inflammation and pain and don’t harm the liver or digestive tract. However you decide to treat CTS, do it sooner rather than later as chronic injury can lead to permanent nerve damage if left untreated.

SPENCE, William (Bill) Arthur March 15, 1921 - October 2, 2015 It is with great sorrow that the family of William (Bill) Arthur Spence announce his passing on Friday October 2nd at the age of 94. Bill was born on March 15, 1921 to Frank and Edith Spence. The 2nd oldest of seven children, he was married to his loving wife, Caroline for 67 years. Bill’s greatest love was his family; especially his grandchildren. Bill was very dedicated to making Kimberley a better place. He had the guts to build North America’s largest free standing cuckoo clock… It still stands today. He had the drive to turn an electric mine train and a couple ore cars into a successful tourist attraction WITH NO MONEY. In his 70’s, he fell off a train tressel and they said he would never walk again… He walked nearly 20 more years. He built one of the first Microwaves, one of the first children sized snowmobiles, not to mention built his own business, Bill’s Radio & TV. He fought through setbacks and challenges and saw each of his projects through. He is considered one of Kimberley’s founding fathers and his footprints will be long visible to Kimberley’s future. Bill was pre-deceased by his parents, Frank and Edith, two brothers Frank and Lawrence, two sisters Isabel and Doreen. He is survived by his loving wife Caroline, daughter Melanie Blackwell (Ray), son Regan Spence (Carmon) and grandchildren Bill (Michelle), Caralee (Ty), Michael, Kyle (Heather), Shayna, Cheyenne and great grandchild Adrien. One brother Gary Spence and one sister Edith Garden and numbers nieces, nephews and cousins. Bill’s celebration of life will be held at Kimberley United Church, on Friday October 9th, at 2pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Kimberley Mining Railway or Kimberley Fire Department.

2016 Honda Accord The mid-cycle refresh for one of North America’s top-selling cars represents more than skin-deep alterations, although exterior updates remain all-important when attracting buyers to the Accord camp. Whereas most automakers seem content to tweak the looks of their vehicles after the first three or four years on the market, Honda has taken a more dramatic approach for its coupe and sedan. The noses, headlights, fog lights and LED taillights on its two- and four-door Accords appear to be influenced by those vehicles from the upscale Acura line. The grille has what is best described as an Acura-like shield, while the LED headlight pods on the Touring model seem similarly Acura-influenced (lesser trims use halogen headlights with LED daytime running lights). There are fresh wheel designs for all trim levels, including new 19-inchers for the top-rung Accord Touring. The body itself has been reengineered to provide greater rigidity and the sedan’s (but not the coupe’s) hood is now made from aluminum (for weight savings) instead of steel.
Interior changes, as subtle as they may be, go further than seat fabrics and trim. A font change for the gauges makes them easier to read and a rearview camera is now standard. Most Accords also have a handy (and long overdue) 60/40 split-folding rear seat. So let’s go about this a different way: is there anything that hasn’t changed? A powertrain examination reveals some familiar engines, starting with a 185-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder. Optional in the EX-L and Touring trims is a 278-horsepower V6. Honda will also have a hybrid sedan available with improved performance and fuel economy, but it won’t be available for several more months (arriving as a 2017 model). For now, the 2.4 is tops in fuel economy with a rating of 8.6 l/100 km in the city and 6.4 on the highway. The latter value is improved slightly from before due to better aerodynamics and a reduction in piston friction. As good as those numbers are — better than the Toyota Camry’s, Hyundai Sonata’s and Ford Fusion’s -— they still don’t top the Nissan

Fantastic Four auto show promises deals and no gimmicks The Fantastic Four auto show is about four local auto dealerships putting on a fourday show at Western Financial Place this October 7 to 10. People going to the show can expect to see the newest vehicles on the market brought to you by Denham Ford, Northstar GM, Spring Honda and Cranbrook
Hyundai. “Here at Northstar, we wanted to show people that they have a choice, said Luis Rodriguez, Director of Marketing, Social Media and Technology for Northstar GM. “When we decided to get together to do this, we felt that we, (the four auto dealers) had a similar mindset. No
trips to Vegas, no giant gorilla on the roof, just good deals and quality service. This event demonstrates that along with our vehicles. Cory Spring, Sales Manager/Partner at Spring Honda, recognized that while this kind of event is a little out-of-the-box, the reasons behind it are
something most people could relate to. “We did want to do something a little bit different, said Spring. We’re really proud of the product from Honda Canada and wanted it out in the public. Even if people are not in the market to buy a car, we wanted to put out a showcase and make it easy for

people to come out. At the end of the day, people are going to be attracted to different types of vehicles. We know that there is enough business to go around and these other dealers have a great reputation. Rene Kowalchuk, Sales Manager at Denham Ford, said that there is a reason this particular group got together for the show. “There is definitely respect between us. It is not a coincidence that it is the four of
us that are meeting erships over the past up to do this. It was few years and we wanthand picked from all ed show people we can sides. It is going([SHULHQFH WKH 'HQKDP 'LIIHUHQFH to do things straight up be really good, said and a sale can just be Kowalchuk. “We’ve a sale and doesn’t have seen a definite change to include a whole in mentality with deal- bunch of other stuff.

Volunteers, including Kootenay Advertiser staff, have been hitting the streets collecting donations to help support local literacy programs. If you missed them, you can visit cbal.org and make a donation online. Every amount helps literacy in the region.
The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL), Black Press, Decoda Literacy Solutions and Kootenay Savings Credit Union are partnering to raise funds for literacy programs in the 5th Annual Reach a Reader Campaign.
On September 19, Kimberley RCMP and Speedwatch held their annual charity golf tournament and raised over $4,000 which will go to local community groups. The event held at the Kimberley Golf Course was a great success with almost 50 golfers participat-
ing. Funds generated by the tournament were distributed to local community groups including, MADD, Rotary Club (Splash Park), Kimberley Nordic Club, Crimestoppers, Seahorse Swim Club and Kimberley Minor Soccer. Throughout the season our Speedwatch volunteers monitor
traffic speed to raise awareness on our streets, but they also take on coordinating the tournament. “We specifically would like to recognize Sharon Gendell and Ernie Miller who took the lead in organizing the event. They were instrumental in making it a success,” said Cpl. Chris Newel.
Buy a paper from one of our volunteers on October 7 and 100% of your donation goes to literacy programs in Cranbrook. Can’t be there? Donate online at cbal.org.
