Efforts to end Cliff Avenue camp ongoing A ‘Notice to Cease Camping on the Highway’ was delivered to the Cliff Avenue homeless on Monday. TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@mrtimes.com

While a temporary shelter opened near downtown Maple Ridge a week ago, tents remain up at the Cliff Avenue homeless camp. And it looks as though it will take some time before the homeless camp is gone completely. According to the City of Maple Ridge, two more tents came down Wednesday, reducing the number of tents to 15 on the street. At its peak, the camp had 35 tents and roughly 65 homeless people camping along Cliff Avenue. On Monday, City staff delivered a “Notice to Cease Camping on the Highway” to all campers.

However, Becker said, there’s a plan to “revisit” the dog bylaw. “In all likelihood, we will review our animal control bylaw over the next four or five months, as part of our process,” the mayor assured. Currently, the community charter recognizes the “dangerous” dog designation, but there’s nothing regarding “vicious” dog designation.

and the private sector – including volunteer efforts – with the following criteria in mind: tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscape and floral displays. Following their evaluation of Maple Ridge, volunteer judges Peter Crawshaw and Lucie Gagné wrote “the City treasures its trees and has designed a comprehensive Urban Forest Maintenance Management Plan to improve and develop a system to manage the urban forestry consisting of street and park trees, and green space corridors. It includes the revision of the tree preservation bylaws, the inventory of the urban forestry

About CIB Communities In Bloom is a Canadian non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility, and beautification through community involvement and the challenge of a national program, with focus on the enhancement of green spaces.

Just in time for the Thanksgiving Day long weekend, the first eager Canadian voters will head to the polls. Advance polling stations open up across the country between Oct. 9 to 12. Most Canadians across the nation should have already received their “voter information card” from Elections Canada, provided they are already registered to vote. The advance polls are being hosted at the Hammond Community Centre, Pitt Meadows Seniors Centre, Golden Ears United Church, and the Maple Ridge Lawn Bowling Club near Thomas Haney Secondary. The polls will be open between noon and 8 p.m. Voters should bring their voter information card, as well as a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s licence or any other form of government ID, with an address attached. Those without photo ID must bring two other pieces of ID, one of which must contain a current address. Finally, voters who do not have ID with a current address should bring a friend who will vouch for their permanent address. Election day is set for Oct. 19, and more information on where to vote can be found at elections.ca, or at the Elections Canada office at 22722 Lougheed Hwy.

cole.wagner@mrtimes.com

Federal candidates squared off for one last time before the election. Monday evening’s emotional high point came during a discussion on the anti-terror Bill C-51. Independent candidate Steve Ranta insisted that the threat of terrorism has been over-exaggerated by the federal government, in order to motivate more strict legislation. “It’s not a real threat – [terrorism] it’s just a big boogeyman to try and scare people into being compliant,” Ranta said to applause from the audience. But Mike Murray, running for the Conservative Party – which was responsible for the anti-terror bill in question – responded. “I lived in England for four years, right when the bombing in London happened,” explained Murray. “I understood the terror that shook that nation,” he continued. “I also think you wouldn’t want to tell the people in Paris, or Australia, or in Ottawa that terrorism is a crock.” Homelessness, a federal issue with a local focus, was again a major topic of discussion. NDP’s Bob D’Eith pledged that his party would develop a nation-

NDP candidate Bob D’Eith and Conservative candidate Mike Murray shared a laugh and a handshake after the debate at Meadowridge ended Monday night. al housing strategy to “ensure adequate, accessible and affordable housing for all Canadians.” “We absolutely do need a real housing strategy,” concurred Peter Tam, the Green Party candidate. “The federal government... is downloading these issues to the province and the municipalities.” “Our housing market is in shambles,” said Ranta. “Even though we’re a prosperous society, we let down those who need it the most.” Murray suggested the only way to combat the rising cost of housing was through a three-pronged

approach: creation of high paying jobs, good policies to help people into homes, and less “regulation and red tape” on the part of local municipalities. “A Liberal government will prioritize significant investment in affordable housing and senior facilities, which is where we need it,” countered Liberal candidate Dan Ruimy. “We’re going to work with the province and the municipality, because that hasn’t been happening,” he added, in reference to the homeless issue. > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘election’

Higher values than cash

I

t’s no secret that colleges and universities could always use some extra cash. So it’s highly notable that Kwantlen Polytechnic University turned down $300,000 from Trans Mountain Pipelines. The oil-pumping firm had offered the money – doled out over 20 years in small increments for bursaries and small scholarships, mostly – as part of its campaign for the twinning of its pipeline, which runs straight through the Fraser Valley, including the territory of the Kwantlen and Katzie First Nations. Not surprisingly, the Kwantlen First Nation (which some don’t realize has territory in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows) has not been entirely enthusiastic about the prospect of an expanded oil line running through its traditional lands. Both Kwantlen and Katzie are intervenors in the National Energy Board hearings that will determine if the project goes forward. Seeing the college named after the First Nation take money from Trans Mountain apparently provoked some discussions between the two Kwantlens. Normally, we would expect this kind of thing to be brushed off. The money would go to environmental education and helping students, the university could say. But the leaders at KPU seem to have sincerely listened to the concerns raised by the First Nation’s leadership. Last week, they announced they were pulling out of the deal with Trans Mountain. It’s no surprise that those who are against the pipeline expansion – and there are many, including farmers, environmentalists, and landowners – have been pleased with the news. But fans of educational independence in general should be pleased. Major corporations always make these donations with few strings, maybe just naming rights. But such donations are made as part of public campaigns for goodwill. Universities must remain places of free speech, and they must not only be free, they must be seen to be free of outside influences. KPU’s decision helps keep them above the fray.

gle parents, blended families, grandparents… But for those under 30 (and even this is a random cutoff; why not 25 or 28 or 22?) neither the middle class nor family are rallying cries. More and more people are starting families later, and having fewer children when they do. More and more people are stretching out their time in school or living with their parents because they can’t find good jobs. (When they do find good jobs, they are unstable. Last in, first out when the next economic downturn hits, right?) All the parties say they want to address the economy, but they’ve been saying that since we still used one-dollar bills. Things are not necessarily getting worse, but they aren’t getting better, and they’re getting more and more uncertain each year. Maybe there’s a very good reason for young people not to vote: they don’t have a stake big enough in our society to even bother picking a side.

Once you have some social and financial equity – a job, kids, and especially some real estate – governments are eager to crowd around and offer to help, or at least to try to not make things actively worse for you. Beyond that, older people may remember a time when parties were much, much more different from one another. This campaign has actually seen some stark differences in approach, more than many elections since the start of the century. But the parties are still crowded around the center, still more alike than they were a generation ago. Can we blame people who grew up with this situation for looking at their options, throwing up their hands, and choosing not to choose? The problem isn’t that young people are lazy or disengaged or any of the other insults regularly lobbed at them. If politicians care about the youth vote, give them a reason to mark an X. Spirited candidates debate heartening Dear Editor, I don’t want to spark a wave of partisan political letters but I would like to respond to Ted Rowbottom’s letter [Candidate etiquette lacking at debate, Oct. 1, TIMES Letters]. I believe I was at the candidates debate he attended and must agree it was a bit noisy. Any political candidate deserves respect and maybe admiration for taking on the job and suffering the heat that they must endure. Boos and catcalls are not really appropriate as we need their participation and should encourage it. Having said that, I felt the debates did reflect the passion the candidates and audience felt. In some ways that is nice to see in the current climate of “who cares?” It also should be noted that the debate was held in the local seniors centre and the row of walkers and abundance or grey hair indicated the age of most of us. The fact that we did manage that kind of energy and political involvement was indeed heartwarming. I guess we feel we’ve earned the right to get noisy now and then. Paul Gregory, Maple Ridge

Invest in the future Dear Editor, Conservative candidate supporter Ted Rowbottom said he does not want to saddle children with debt [Candidate etiquette lacking at debate, Oct. 1, TIMES Letters]. Putting aside the large debt Conservatives have racked up, a continued Conservative policy will find our future generations without a future. Canada’s future depends on

growing the economy. Canada cannot depend on a resource economy, it must invest in infrastructure and education to be competitive in the world economy. It takes money to make money. While the NDP is focused on spending for social services, the Conservative policy of not spending and cutting services is worse. Only the Liberals have a policy for investing in the future. If you are really interested for future generations, then the choice is clear – unless your interest is only in the future of the wealthy. Dan Banov, Liberal executive on Policy for Maple Ridge

Apathy biggest fear Dear Editor, In my lifetime I have never seen such a justifiable furor over a government in power, that seemingly everyone would like to see in the rear-view mirror. You absolutely have to vote – it is not just your right, it is a privilege and Canada’s most precious resource at this great turning point in our country. The only fear you should take to heart, is the fear of what apathy could bring – an environment not fit for our grandchildren, a country where scientists are silenced and fear of everything not condoned by the present government is what we are urged to emulate. 1984 anyone? On Oct.19, let’s get out in record numbers to vote for a Canada we believe in. Darlene Mercer, Pitt Meadows

Tories reward donors Dear Editor, With the election nearly upon us, let us not forget the huge number of appointments Stephen Harper has made to government boards, commissions, and tribunals. There have been more than 350 appointments to Conservative donors, who collectively have donated more than $790,000 into the Conservative Party’s coffers in the past 10 years. In total, more than one-quarter of all government appointments are Conservative donors. This is the Conservatives, rewarding their donors with appointments paid for by taxpayers. It is time to send this Conservative government and all its corruption packing. Cherie Delainey, Maple Ridg

Voting a choice

Dear Editor, Two things in regards to Bob Groeneveld’s column, Shift to democracy starts with less power for the PM [Oct. 1,TIMES Opinion]: 1.) Liberal leader Justin Trudeau would have to be advised it is not democratic to not allow people in his party to vote their conscience. 2.) NDP Leader Thomas Mulcaire would have to change the women only edict in some ridings to be truly democratic. Making it mandatory to vote also is not democratic. It would be wonderful if everyone was educated to the issues and had a zeal to implement their choices, but the truth is the majority don’t care except maybe to complain. Headline misleading Dear Editor, Thank you for publishing our letter in the Thursday, Sept. 17 edition of The TIMES. We do however, object to the misleading editorial headline Developer accused of ‘raping’ West Ridge. The intent of our letter was to complain about the way in which Maple Ridge council discounted and ignored our concerns. The rape and destruction of this last green space in West Maple Ridge was with the full consent of the mayor and council. Cherilynn and Greg Toll, Maple Ridge

The Creation Science Association of BC presents: The West Coast Express morning train rolled to a stop at the Port Haney station in Maple Ridge earlier this week. WCE passengers won’t benefit from the new one-zone pay system in Metro Vancouver.

TRANSPORTATION

Distance riders given break Transit users can now bus anywhere in Metro Vancouver with the one-zone fare.

THE ULTIMATE PROOF OF CREATION by Dr. John Lisle Jason Lisle earned his Ph.D. in astrophysics at the University of Colorado in Boulder, where his research specialized in the solar photosphere. Dr. Lisle then focused on apologetics ministry, writing and speaking on science topics and the defence of the Christian faith. His most well-known book, “The Ultimate Proof of Creation”, demonstrates that biblical creation is the only logical possibility for origins!

Starting this past Monday, travel got simpler for Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows bus users looking to cross more than one zone in Metro Vancouver. TransLink launched a new fare system in which riders pay for one-zone travel on buses all day, every day, throughout the region. Unfortunately for West Coast Express passengers boarding and exiting at the Port Haney, Maple Meadows, and Pitt Meadows stations, the system doesn’t apply to them. The existing fare-zone rates for SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express remain in effect. And, according to TransLink, HandyDART customers have always been charged a one zone fare, regardless of any zones they cross. The new pay system, therefore, will not change anything for HandyDART customers. In addtion, tapping with a Compass Card has now become “easier,” noted TransLink. Riders with Compass Cards or tickets will tap in but will no longer have to tap out when

Monday morning at the Haney Bus Loop, passengers boarded a bus bound for Coquitlam. A new one-zone pay system in Metro Vancouver launched Oct. 5. exiting the bus. Tapping in and tapping out is still required on all other modes. SkyTrain customers are already seeing select gates closed at stations as a reminder to tap in and tap out. “As we roll out Compass in phases, we want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to support our customers along the way,” TransLink’s acting CEO Cathy McLay said. “Introducing the one-zone fare for bus travel and removing the need to tap out on buses will make this transition easier for our customers.” McLay added, “Our outreach teams have also already

engaged more than 50,000 people across the system to help guide customers to buy the right zone and to successfully plan their journey.” Early morning Monday, the day the new pay system was implemented, bus riders who spoke to the TIMES at the Haney Bus Loop said they were only travelling through one zone and were not affected one way or another by the new changes. A video of “5 tips for Bus Anywhere with a 1-Zone Fare” is available on TransLink’s YouTube channel. For more on the one-zone fare and Compass Card, visit translink.ca.

Murdering wife loses sentence appeal A panel of judges rejected pleas from a local woman who wanted her stay in jail to be shorted. KEITH FRASER Special to The TIMES

A Maple Ridge woman who was convicted in the fatal stabbing of her husband has lost an appeal of her sentence. Leah Marie Florence was found guilty of the November 2009 second-degree murder of Andrew Milne, who suffered 14 stabs and cuts to his torso, neck and head during an attack in the couple’s basement suite.

Court heard that the couple, who were residing in Florence’s aunt’s home after being nearly homeless, had had a rocky 15-year marriage and that they’d been drinking on the night of the incident. Florence received the mandatory sentence of life in prison with 12 years of parole ineligibility. On appeal, she sought to reduce the parole ineligibility period to the 10-year minimum, arguing that the judge had failed to properly consider her prospects for rehabilitation and her aboriginal background. But in a ruling released Friday, a three-member panel of the B.C. Court of Appeal rejected the offender’s appeal. – Keith Fraser is a reporter with The Province

Market moving indoors: The last outdoor Haney Farmers Market is being held Saturday, Oct. 10,

at Memorial Peace Park. Starting next weekend, Oct. 17 through Nov. 14, the market moves to Grow & Gather Nursery, at 24565 Dewdney Trunk Rd. Each week, the market has a theme. During one of this year’s weekly outdoor markets, organizers hosted an annual teddy bear picnic. Three-and-a-half-year-old Griffyn Stanley of Aldergrove (above) and six-year-old Evangelica Fehr of Maple Ridge, were among those in attendance. Santa Claus (a.k.a. Santa Keith from Sevenoaks Shopping Centre in Abbotsford) was spotted scoping out South Bonson Community Centre (temporarily transformed into Gilford Town Hall) Monday, during filming of a movie of the week called Magic Stocking.

Romancing more family docs

A

re you still looking for a family doctor? Well look no further. The Ridge Meadows Division of Family Practice turned to the community to understand how many people were looking for a family doctor and discovered 10,000 local residents were. The division went to work. Knowing that every community throughout the province, not just Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, has residents seeking physicians, we knew we had to roll up our sleeves for some hard work. Bringing together our tireless, committed local physicians and our dedicated community from local business, and municipalities to non-profits – we came up with some good ideas and put our plans into action. With each prospective physician visiting Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, we know they are looking on average of at least five other communities

T

wo new website were created recently to help local residents find a doctor or GP in this community. Ridge Meadows Division of Family Practice, a non-profit society formed in 2010, now represents more than 90 family physicians in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. One of the biggest hurdles the organization identified in local health care was the difficulty people face in finding doctors accepting new patients. If there are family physicians in the community who are accepting patients, they will be listed on the websites – one for Maple Ridge and one for Pitt Meadows, boasted Health Minister Terry Lake. > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘doctors’

choose this community to live and work. Dr. Al Neufeld, our physician recruitment lead, feels that “Our red-carpet approach is working well. Making prospective recruits feel needed and wanted has been very successful. Once we hook them we could easily lose them. We need to continually work on our bait.” Part of the magic to keep the physician recruitment momentum going is to reach out to the community and their networks. The work to recruit physicians will never be over, as our communities continue to thrive and grow combined with the provincial recruitment competitive landscape. However, today, we are all feeling lucky as we have five family physicians who chose Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, and are currently accepting patients. To find out which physicians are currently accepting patients, visit www.findadoctorpittmeadows.com or www.findadoctormapleridge.com.

The Fraser River is a little more picturesque these days, thanks to the efforts of Port Metro Vancouver. The Fraser River Improvement Initiative, led by the port authority, identified 151 derelict structures, vessels and trespassers at sites along the Fraser. Eighteen of those sites were in Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows, said John ParkerJervis, media advisor with Port Metro Vancouver. “Eight of those sites have been addressed,” said Parker-Jervis. While some sites require significant cleanup due to negligent owners, a few involved people “trespassing on land they didn’t actually own.” In these cases, it was often simply a matter of formalizing a new leasing agreement, rather than cleaning up any derelict structures, explained Parker-Jervis. But some sites are more work intensive, such as one site in Maple Ridge which had 16 derelict vessels in the water. “A big piece of this is about the communities around here – a lot of these are eyesores for the community around them,” said Parker-Jervis.

And Maple Ridge Towing’s Randy Sorely is among nine people inducted into the ITRHF this year. At age 26, Sorely and his dad launched Maple Ridge Towing. Today, he is the president of the Towing and Recovery Alliance of Canada (TRAC), which he helped establish. He, in conjunction Randy Sorely with others, also helped launch Tow Canada magazine, the country’s national towing publication. Since 2008, Maple Ridge Towing has helped coordinate Operation Red Nose, a program which offers motorists safe rides home over the Christmas season. “This year’s inductees share a dedication to their state and local towing organizations, as well as the national towing and recovery community,” said Troy Barnett, president of the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum.

he windstorm that slammed B.C.’s South Coast on Aug. 29, pulling trees from their roots and leaving much of Metro Vancouver in the dark for days, was a small sampling of what people could experience if a major natural disaster hit this region. “I think that the situation in August, with the windstorm, provided a real recent example, of making sure that we’re prepared for no power and water for more than a day, and being prepared for any other disasters that may come,” said McGee, who added that people need to be self-sufficient for 72 hours in the event of a major earthquake or other kind of natural disaster. “We’re a coastal province for the most part and we live in a seismic area, so being fully prepared should be part of everybody’s family plan,” McGee said. “Most people have smoke detectors or fire planning for their home, but a lot of people don’t do disaster planning for their family. It’s something they should consider and not put off, which is easy to do.” McGee noted, “I would never want anyone to experience some of the things that I saw, or conditions that I experienced, but it should be in the back of people’s minds, to take care of themselves and their families [in the case of a natural disaster].”

Langley Rams rookie offensive lineman Donovan McNee feels like he dodged a bullet. The lone Maple Ridge player with the junior Rams, McNee suffered a left knee sprain during Langley’s final regular season game of the B.C. Football Conference season. McNee was hurt in the Rams’ 35-23 win over the host Westshore Rebels at Westhills Stadium in Langford Saturday. The Ridge Meadows Flames hockey squad play their first of two games in a row tonight, as they head to Langley to take on the Knights. Tomorrow night, they return to home ice to take on the Aldergrove Kodiaks at Planet Ice. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

In the first decade of the 1900s, competition for prominence in the North American fly tying industry was fierce, writes columnist Jeff Weltz.

The Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary Titans senior boys soccer team defeated the Garibaldi Rebels by a score of 5-3 in the first game of the high school soccer season, this past Thursday. The Titans are in action again today, at 3:30 p.m., when they take on Westview Wildcats.

The Vernon Panthers posted a 20-6 win over the host Pitt Meadows Marauders last weekend.

(nee Wolford) 1962-2015

It is with great sadness that we announce that Cindy Irene Dailey left us on Friday, Oct 2 2015. Previously from Port Coquitlam, Cindy spent most of her adult life residing, volunteering and working in Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge. Cindy had a “HUGE” heart and would do whatever was needed to help friends and family whenever called upon. Cindy had a great love for both young children and animals. Her early working career was that of a Child Care Worker, a job she adored. She will be deeply missed by all that knew her, especially her only child, Jonathan Dailey.
