WILL JOHNSON West Kootenay Advertiser
Dani and Alex Evans collaborated with their mother Liz on their YouTube show, which aims to raise money for the food bank
After struggling for years with dietary and health issues, seven-year-old Ymir entrepreneur Dani Evans became concerned about how healthy food was being depicted as “yucky” or “gross” on TV. “I want to make things fun,” said the precocious star of the locally filmed Cooking with Kids: How to Make Healthy Food Fun! The show now has over ten episodes online, co-starring a variety of their favourite stuffed animals. While creating the show, Dani enlisted the help of her three-year-old brother Alex as well as her mother Liz. And once the show was up and running, they decided they would send any proceeds from the endeavour to their local food banks. Their goal is to raise $500 by Christmas. “Then all the families will be able to have good food for Christmas and everyone can have a big healthy dinner,” she said. Alex is proud of his contribution to the process. “I made the smoothie all by myself,” he told the Star. “It was really, really fun.” That smoothie consisted of yogurt, spinach, bananas, blueberries, almond milk, flax seed, hemp hearts and strawberries. “We really want to celebrate wholesome, hearty, real food,” said Liz. “We have one episode where we make a homemade mac and cheese with no additives.” But the main priority is to have fun, said Dani. “I didn’t want cooking to be so boring. If you experiment with food it can end up being a masterpiece instead of ‘oh gross, broccoli’. We try to make it the opposite so they don’t say ‘ew gross’. Instead they say ‘I really want some’.” Now that she’s transitioned to a healthier diet, Dani wants everyone to know the benefits. “I feel way better than before. My body feels less sticking out and my tummy doesn’t ache as much.” To view the videos and support the Evan’s endeavours visit Cooking with Kids: We Make Healthy Food Fun! on YouTube. Their favourite episode so far is their oatmeal recipe.

The BC Wildlife Federation has serious concerns about the collapse of kokanee fish populations in Kootenay Lake. Kokanee are a land-locked salmon species that spend their entire life cycle in fresh water. The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO) reported last week that kokanee spawner numbers at the Meadow Creek spawning channel have declined to a historic low. On average over the last five decades this channel has produced about 500,000 spawners. In the last three years those numbers have dwindled to 200,000 in 2013, 73,000 in 2014 and less than 10,000 in 2015. The prediction for 2016 is about the same as 2015. During the mid-2000s predators such as the Gerrard rainbow trout increased in numbers because they fed on the abundant kokanee. A combination of insufficient harvest of the predators, stocking of Gerrard rainbow in the upstream Duncan Reservoir and declining kokanee production, has led to the

predators consuming virtually all the adult kokanee. As a consequence, today’s low kokanee numbers have drastically impacted the trout and char predators that rely almost exclusively on them for food. The BC Wildlife Federation calls on the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations to immediately conduct an independent inquiry into how to address this crisis and avoid these types of occurrences in the future. BCWF members want to achieve a clear understanding of what factors led to the kokanee’s decline and to build a much stronger restoration plan. Kootenay Lake’s world-renowned Gerrard rainbow trout numbers are also in rapid decline and they are in peril as they are large predators dependent on kokanee for food as adults. Their recovery will take a decade or more. The unique genetics of the Gerrard rainbow trout will be lost if concerted and sustained action is not taken to save the species. Other species in the system negatively impacted by fish stock collapse include endangered white sturgeon and burbot, which rely on kokanee for food as they travel between British Columbia and Idaho. Kootenay Lake is a popular fishing spot for residents and tourists. The impact of declining kokanee and rainbow trout populations on the local economy is huge. The region relies on tourism revenue traditionally generated by attracting anglers from all over the globe. Kokanee and rainbow trout are the most popular fresh water game fish in B.C. The BC Wildlife Federation implores the Minister of FLNRO to respond quickly to the collapse of the kokanee by launching an independent inquiry without delay. BCWF President George Wilson said, “The Federation requests that that kokanee eggs be immediately stocked into the most productive spawning habitat in Meadow Creek to maximize production in the short term and allow assessment of fry production in Kootenay Lake. A longer-term strategy is required for the rapid and effective remediation of the both kokanee and the Gerrard rainbow, as well as internationally significant white sturgeon”.

Lardo also found in Idaho Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
One-hundred fourteenth in a semi-alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Last week we looked at the little-known battle between Lardo (on Kootenay Lake) and Lardeau (on the northeast arm of Upper Arrow Lake) over the right to use the name. The towns’ intransigence meant that by 1895, neither received the post office they desired. However, that year MP John Mara wrote the postmaster general, requesting an office be opened at Lardeau. The department asked BC postal inspector E.H. Fletcher to look into it, but he replied: “I am informed that the townsite has not been built upon to any extent within the past year, nor has the the population increased. In fact I am given to understand that there are no more than half a dozen people living there.â€? There is some indication it was nevertheless approved, for the Kootenay Mail of May 2, 1896 reported: “Lardeau City has at last been made a post office to commence business May 1st. C. Menhenick, postmaster.â€? However, it didn’t open and Lardeau soon ceased to exist. Its buildings were moved to the new nearby town of Comaplix (some sources mistakenly state they were actually the same place). While promoters of the Lardeau townsite insisted on that name, others in the area weren’t so enamoured with it. The Revelstoke Herald of April 3, 1897 reported: “The people of Thomson’s Landing are thinking of petitioning the government to change the name of this mining district from Lardeau to one more appropriate. This is not Lardeau mining district except on a government map. It is Fish Creek and Upper Arrow Lake district and never can be anything else.â€? The paper accused the townsite owners of causing confusion by “stealing a name from a neighbouring districtâ€? and declared “we don’t require the services of a borrowed name to bring the district to the front ‌ We don’t want

This ad for the Lardeau townsite appeared in the Revelstoke Kootenay Star on April 1, 1893. the name Lardeau for this district. It is all right where it belongs, but it has always been a hoodoo to those who stole it from its rightful owners. Lardeau, they said, was the country around the north and south forks of the upper and lower Lardeau River and Trout Lake. “Call this district Fish Creek, Arrowhead, Comaplix, or Barnato, the paper said. “Anything but Lardeau for that it can never be. In 1899, a post office finally opened at Lardo. It changed its name to Lardeau in 1947 and closed in 1967. Coincidentally, there was a Lardo on Payette Lake in central Idaho. A post office operated there from 1889 to 1917. The origin of its name is hazy, although Frank P. Rowland related this

story in his 1960 book Founding of McCall, Idaho: “A huge painting in the Shore Lodge dining room shows a team of horses running away with a wagon load of freight consisting of sacks of flour and buckets of lard in boxes. The boxes have broken open and the lids have been knocked off the cans. The flour sacks have burst, the flour mixing with the lard making a dough — lard and dough — Lard, Oh! Lardo. Rowland said he tried hard to prove or disprove the story. He was initially skeptical, noting it wasn’t told until many years after the fact, but eventually came to believe it was true. Today Lardo is considered the western part of the town of McCall.

Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall gave BC’s education minister an earful in the legislature last week over computer software that has contributed to “gridlock” at L.V. Rogers Secondary. “Kids, parents, and teachers experienced quite a shock this year, all thanks to the Liberals’ MyEdBC program, the $100 million computer system meant to replace the failed $100 million computer system by the same company,” Mungall said. Minister Mike Bernier responded that the government has been “working around the clock … to ensure we can speed up the system.” Nelson District Teachers Association president Paul Boscariol believes Fujitsu, the company responsible for MyEdBC, should be held accountable for the “tens of thousands of hours” teachers and staff spent
Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall working with the faulty system. However, superintendent Jeff Jones expressed some optimism. “We’ve been able to access some good support from the provincial
level and some of our district level were able to contact Fujitsu directly,” he said. “It’s frustrating, to say the least. However, ultimately I maintain there’s hope for this software.”

Change in management at Teck Trail Operations Sheri Regnier West Kootenay Advertiser
A change in management is underway at Teck Trail Operations. After 27-years with the Teck, four as general manager of the Trail plant, Greg Belland is retiring this month. Effective Oct. 23, Belland will pursue the next phase of his ca-
reer outside the company, confirmed Catherine Adair, Teck’s community relations leader. “During Greg’s tenure as general manager, he has provided strong leadership,” Adair told the West Kootenay Advertiser. “And has been instrumental in improving our environmental performance, particularly to reduce site emissions and improve community air quality.”
Mark Edwards, a former manager of environment, health and safety at the Trail site, will fulfil the general manager role for the interim period, said Adair. Edwards previously worked in Applied Research and Trail operations, she added. “Where he held various roles in the areas of environmental management, process management, quality systems and occupational health and safety.”

Provincial funding aimed at improving rural Internet service Sheri regnier West Kootenay Advertiser
Another $2.3 million is coming to the Kootenays to help rural homeowners connect to faster Internet. Columbia Basin Broadband Corporation (CBBC) will be handed the funds through the province’s Connecting BC Program. Small local Internet Service Providers (ISP) will use the money to upgrade connections for 27,000 residents throughout the Columbia Basin, including remote homesteads between Kootenay Lake and Trail, through the Slocan Valley and east to Salmo and Ymir. Certain places aren’t covered by the larger
telecommunications companies, and some homes still use old school dial up Internet. A local ISP seeks to change that, bringing modern day connections that can enable rural residents to work from home, study on line, or just surf the net faster, for fun. As long as trees aren’t obscuring the sight line to a tower, pretty much anyone living in the West Kootenay mountains can have high speed Internet these days. New technology allows for wireless connection between one of 21 Columbia Wireless towers and a subscriber’s home or business. The line-of-sight signal allows those who choose rural living to have Internet services
that a few years ago, were only available in urban centres. “I have a client who lives three quarters the way up a side of a mountain and lives off the grid,” explained Ben Leslie, from Columbia Wireless. “So she doesn’t have a phone. But she works from home, and is an IT tech for the University of Calgary.” Until recently, local service providers like Columbia Wireless (WISP), were on their own when it came to expanding infrastructure and improving access for rural communities. This latest grant means more money for smaller companies to improve ‘last-mile infrastructure’ barriers, which is the connection from the main network line
to the individual subscriber. “It’s a collaborative grant between ISPs and Columbia Basin Trust (CBT),” Leslie explained. “We applied for it to pay for subscriber modules. That’s the radio that is installed at residential or business sites to pick up our signal,” he added. “They cost quite a bit, about $410 each, so if we were to buy one for everybody, it would be a lot of money.” Besides radio equipment, the first wave of the program grants will fund improvements to network engineering, design and devices to 70 communities across the province. “There’s still a lot of houses off grid that don’t have a phone line or cell phone coverage,”
said Leslie, mentioning WISP serves about 1,000 homes between Nelson, Trail and all communities between. “So this is their only means of communication for emergency. We’ve have numerous calls for ambulances through our service by Skype, for example. And it’s really neat technology because weather doesn’t affect it.” Since launching in 2006, word of the Nelson-based WISP is spreading about the speed and reliability of the company’s product. “Up to now, we’ve been privately funded,” said Leslie. “They’ve never really known us as an entity until the local ISPs collaborated with Columbia Basin Trust. But clients are happy and we are continu-
Sharon Traynor and members of the Deer Park communications society were instrumental in getting Internet service and phones to Renata and other Arrow Lakes communities. Ben Leslie of Columbia Wireless installed the towers for the remote-area access. Jim Bailey photo ally installing because it’s word of mouth,” he added. “And people living in Trail, Castlegar and Nelson are switching because we know you by name, not by customer number.” Both the Connecting Canadians and Connecting BC programs focus on bringing high speed (5mbps) to rural and remote areas, says Delphi Hoodicoff, CBT’s communications director. “So our project application focused on working with local ISPs to improve service in those underserved areas of the Columbia Basin Boundary..” Larger communities like Trail already

Connecting BC is a multi-year program administered by Northern Development Initiative Trust, with a mandate to strengthen the economy of the province’s most rural and remote areas. CBT received a $3.34 million federal grant in July, to proivde high speed Internet to 11,000 households in the Kootenay region by 2017. For a full list of service providers visit cbt.org.

Robusters featured in documentary Although the team members think of themselves that way, they were surprised anyone else did. At the end of May, a film crew arrived and spent three days interviewing team members and friends, driving out to practices and learning about dragon boating and the women of the Kootenay Robusters while they filmed every aspect of our training routine. The result was one section of an eight part documentary called Hale and Heart. The film celebrates adventurous and spirited women whose sport is deeply embedded in their lives. Participants span the decades — from a 12 year old surfer to the Robusters, with one still going strong in her eighties. The information on the film’s website sets
the stage: “Unconcerned about gender stereotypes, these women spend their extra time (and then some) sweating it out on the trail, the track, the court or the water. Daring, gritty and stoked, these women possess physical strength, but also a robust passion that keeps them dedicated to their dreams. Hale and Heart, in a name, speaks to these two things that weave their unique stories together — the health in body (hale) and the intense joy they find in pursuing it (heart). As well as the Robusters, local mountain biking legend Cindy Devine, is also featured, riding the beautiful trails of Rossland. Hale and Heart is made possible with a grant from Telus Optik Local Community

Kootenay Roadrunners For the second year in a row the Kootenay Roadrunners planted trees and shrubs near the approach to the old Taghum bridge. Thor Smestad (red cruiser vest) organized the ride and planting as a way for the group to offset their carbon footprint. The group planted 50 dogwood and cottonwood stakes on steep rocky slopes which surround a small pond that is home to several birds and turtles. Photos by Tamara Hynd

Seniors’ Community Gives Families Peace of Mind!
Mountain Side Village in Fruitvale, BC continues to offer families peace of mind with spacious seniors’ suites.
These maintenance-free living suites incorporate supportive features to promote independence and 24-hour emergency monitoring service for added peace of mind.
The Vancouver TheatreSports League (VTSL) has been wowing audiences since opening their doors in 1980. On Oct. 23, the six-time International Improv Comedy Award winners will be bringing their distinctive brand of performance to the Rossland Miners’ Hall. TheatreSports is a unique type of performance; the audience provides the inspiration in the form of suggestions, and the performers provide the entertainment in the form of hilarious improvised scenes — think, Who’s Line is it Anyway? Improv allows the audience to see their ideas instantly transformed into reality. Whether reconstructing the story of an audience members’ first kiss, a bad day on the job, or a recent mishap, each performance is as original as its audience. The performance will be presented by the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture (RCAC). RCAC was awarded a grant from BC Touring Council to present a youth focused performance and decided they would like to host a performance that would also include a workshop component. “We wanted to introduce a new genre of performance to Rossland, as well as provide an opportunity for youth to participate in and learn about that art form,” says Tara Kowalchuk, RCAC executive administrator. “We found Vancouver TheatreSports League and they are a perfect fit!”
EATURE SPECIAL F 30” Free Standing Electric Self Cleaning Range with Glass Ceramic Cook Top.
If you or your family member is interested in one of these limited suites please call Mountain Side Village at 250-367-9870 or visit GOLDENLIFE.CA to arrange a tour. Included in Rent: • Hearty, Home-style Meals • Safety & Security Monitoring • Shuttle Bus • Social & Recreational Activities • Maintenance • Housekeeping PLUS Access to Building Amenities: • Theatre / Chapel • Games Room / Library • Multiple Lounges • Spacious Dining Room • Spa Room

VTSL will be facilitating a TheatreSports workshop for youth from 1-3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23. The workshop will allow youth to learn about TheatreSports and practice the art of Improv. It is suitable for youth with a wide range of theatre/acting ability. “We encourage all youth to come out and give it a try,” says Kowalchuk, “You do not need to have any acting experience, just a good attitude and be ready to laugh and have fun!” There will also be a community improv performance suitable for both youth and adults. Expect an evening of laughter where the audience influences the performance and you never know what might happen. This performance will be at 7 p.m. on Oct. 23. Vancouver ThatreSports League draws cult-like capacity crowd at their home The Improv Centre on Granville Island in Vancouver, performing to more than 200,000 enthusiasts yearly, five nights a week, 52 weeks per year. This performance promises to be a hilarious evening different from anything you have experienced before. The youth workshop is $20, which includes admission into the evening performance. Pre-registration is required. Tickets for the evening performance are $10 and can be purchased at Out of the Cellar (Rossland), and the Charles Bailey Theatre Box Office (Trail). Workshop registration details and tickets can be found online at www.rosslandartscouncil.com.

Trust expects to double revenues CHELSEA NOVAK West Kootenay Advertiser
The Columbia Basin Trust is expecting to nearly double its revenues in the next few years. The increase comes as the result of the CBT’s investment in a number of power projects. The Waneta Expansion Project is coming online and the CBT has also renewed a power purchase agreement for the Arrow Lakes dam with BC Hydro. “In the next couple of years we’ll be increasing our revenues to about $55 million, for the foreseeable future, per year,”
said Delphi Hoodicoff, director of communications for the CBT. Power purchase agreements for the CBT’s power projects are longterm, so the trust can be reasonably certain of its revenues for the next few years. In response to the expected increase in revenue, CBT approached communities about how the trust could better its services. “Over the past year the Our Trust, Our Future engagement process went underway across the region,” said Hoodicoff. The result of that community engagement is the Renewed
Strategic Priorities document, which the trust released this week. “That document is for 2016 to 2020, and it talks about 13 strategic priorities that residents want us to focus on. It also talks about the ways in which we’re going to support residents, the tools or the methods we’ll be using,” explained Hoodicoff. One of the trust’s new tools is to explore forms of investment that may not have a high financial reward, but that provide a community benefit, such as job creation. “This could be a no interest or low interest loan for example,” said Hoodicoff.
The completed Waneta Expansion Project will help double the Columbia Basin Trust’s revenues in the next few years. Owl Walk opens in Slocan A “silk purse from a sow’s ear.” The very ugly, graffiti-covered old trailers and collapsed tent platforms beside the Slocan Valley Rail Trail are gone. This once-ugly section of the trail is now enhanced with a lovely nature park between the trail and the river — complete with marked walkways, interpretive signage, an outdoor classroom and pit-toilet. A joint project of the Slocan Valley Heritage Trail Society and the Village of Slocan, a 45-minute educational nature walk has been created centred on the habitat needs of the endangered Western Screech-owl which was found to be nesting in the area. The Owl Walk begins at the new kiosk beside the rail trail at the intersection of Main St. and Fletcher Ave. in Slocan (three blocks west of the post office). Four beautiful and informative interpretive signage panels have been installed on the kiosk. Funding for the two projects that created the Owl Walk came from the Columbia Basin Trust’s Environmental Initiatives program, and the Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation.
