BC business owners appear to like Trans Pacific Partnership

Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training Minister Shirley Bond. By Tom Fletcher B.C.’s Asia trade will

benefit from the TransPacific Partnership, the world’s largest free trade agreement, reached Monday after all-night discussions with 11 Pacific Rim countries, according to business and provincial government officials. Jobs Minister Shirley Bond cautioned that legal work and ratification by the 12 countries involved still remains to be done, but the

TPP removes barriers for B.C. producers of seafood, minerals, forest and farm products in countries such as Japan, Malaysia and Vietnam. “Generally speaking, any time British Columbia can compete on a fair and level playing field, we’re going to do well,” said Bond, citing trade growth in cherries, blueberries and wood products. Much of B.C.’s

progress in lumber exports has been in China, which is not part of the TPP talks. B.C. averages $4.8 billion annually in forest products to TPP countries and 1.5 billion worth of pulp and paper, despite duties up to five per cent in Australia and New Zealand, up to 10 per cent in Japan and up to 40 per cent in Malaysia. The B.C. Chamber of Commerce says

fish and seafood are currently subject to 15 per cent duty in Japan and Malaysia, up to 34 per cent in Vietnam and up to five per cent in New Zealand. Beef, fresh and frozen vegetables, fresh cherries and fresh and frozen blueberries also face tariffs in Asian countries. The tentative deal has emerged as a major issue in the federal election campaign. Prime Minister

Stephen Harper outlined a $4 billion “income guarantee program” for Canada’s protected dairy and egg producers, to compensate farmers for lost income due to new foreign imports for 10 years after the TPP takes effect. NDP leader Thomas Mulcair blasted the agreement as a “sellout” of Canadian auto workers and farmers that will also

see drug prices rise in Canada. Mulcair said his party would not be bound by the agreement if it forms the new government on Oct. 19. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau said his party is pro-free trade, but will study the agreement and “take the responsible time to do what’s right for Canada.”

A GP for Me working for better healthcare

The East Kootenay Division of Family Practice brings together family doctors from Cranbrook, Creston, Fernie, Kimberley, Golden, Invermere, Elkford, and Sparwood. Together with health authority, municipal, and community partners, we’re working to improve local health care. A GP for Me is a province-wide initiative funded jointly by the Government of BC and Doctors of BC. A GP for Me aims to help more people get a family doctor, and to better support people with complex health needs. Our Division’s plans were created to meet the specific needs of East Kootenay communities. We’re working to improve local access to family doctors now and in the future with a combination of activities created to meet the needs of East Kootenay as a whole and the distinct needs of the individual rural communities that make up our region. We’re helping East Kootenay doctors include other health care providers in teambased care in their practices. When other professionals work in your family doctor’s office as part of a team, you can benefit from more in-depth care, especially if you have complex or chronic health challenges. Sharing care also reduces the demand on doctors’ time and makes it possible for them to see more patients. Social Workers and a Life Skills Worker are working with family doctors in Creston, the Elk Valley and Cranbrook as part of the A GP for Me strategy. Support is also being given to all family doctors who want to find efficiencies in their practices that will allow them more time with patients. We’ve developed both short- and longterm recruitment strategies to help make sure we have enough doctors to care for our population. While we’re actively recruiting across our region, our initial focus has been to attract new doctors to Cranbrook. A GP for Me is also helping us recruit more locums; doctors who can fill in when your family doctor is away. Five family physicians have joined Cranbrook clinics since initiating the Physician Shortage Task Force and the Red

Friday, October 9, 2015 Kootenay News Advertiser Life – it can be filled with unexpected trials and astounding miracles. Yet those who are touched by both circumstances simultaneously, and then use their experiences to benefit others, are few and far between. Don Hampton is an example of such people. Mr. Hampton, Carpentry Instructor at COTR, wanted to do something special to give back to the Hospital that helped him, his family and friends, through the most challenging times of their lives. With that in mind, Mr. Hampton started conceptualizing an idea for a fundraiser to benefit EKRH. Instead of writing a thank you note or a similar gesture, Mr. Hampton was inspired by a large standing dead fir tree he came across during a hike.

He realized immediately that this was not ordinary wood, this fir had character like he had never seen – hit by lightning, scarred by forest fire at least twice, drought, bad and good years were all very evident. Mr. Hampton having worked with wood all of his life knew this tree was something special and that the wood should be more than just firewood. From this tree, Mr. Hampton not only embarked on a journey to create something beautiful for his family, he knew this would be a wonderful opportunity to pay thanks to the staff at EKRH – the idea of a handcrafted cradle came to life. EKFH will be auctioning off the beautifully handcrafted cradle. You will have an opportunity to place your bid at the

On corporate taxes and representation: candidates answer

With the election rapidly approaching, the Kootenay Advertiser gave local candidates a pool of questions. The following two questions were agreed on by all parties to be of importance to them and the people in the region. David Wilks, Conservative Party: Should we switch to proportional representation? Through referendum, citizens in the Provinces of Ontario, BC and PEI have rejected proportional representation and have voted to keep the “first past the post” system. The Conservative Party supports the current system of “first past the post.” Should we raise or lower tax rate for corporations? Since 2006, the Conservative Government has reduced the corporate income tax rate for job creators from 21% to 15%. This provides companies opportunity to reinvest, expand and create additional jobs. They are the lowest in the G7 now. The level we are at is what keeps us competitive. The Conservative government will continue with its low tax plan, to encourage growth in the Canadian economy and stay the course with 15%. Wayne Stetski, NDP: Should we switch to Proportional Representation? Yes. The NDP is committed to making this the last federal election in Canada that takes

Don Johnston, Liberal Party candidate. place using the FirstPast-The-Post electoral system. Never again will a majority government be formed with only the support of a minority of Canadians. The Harper Conservatives have been ruling over a majority in Parliament even though they have the support of only 39% of voters. And this could easily happen again this election if we don’t vote together. Proportional representation will result in a much more representative and diverse parliament. And this will result in better government and better decision-making. If voters decide to vote together to ensure that the NDP is successful in this election, traditional Green and Liberal voters will never have to vote strategically again. Should we raise or lower tax rates for corporations? I believe that we should raise the tax rates for corporations. Corporations need to pay their fair share. An NDP government

will increase the tax rate from 15% to 17%, returning to a rate similar to our tax rates in 2008. This increased revenue will be used to support affordable childcare, fairness for seniors, and addressing issues that matter to Canadians. Even with a 2% increase, Canada will still have a tax rate that is substantially below that of our biggest trading partner, the US, and well below most other G7 and G20 countries. Bill Green, Green Party: Should we switch to proportional representation? Yes. This is a Green Party priority. Our first-past-the-post system is outdated. I worked on campaigns in 2005 and 2009 to change BC’s voting system and will put the same energy into election reform in Ottawa. In the last federal election, we saw Stephen Harper’s Conservatives form a majority government with only 39% of the popular vote. So

60% of Canadians who voted that year supported other parties, yet the Conservatives gained 100% control of Parliament. Is that democracy at its best? The Green Party will establish an all-party commission which will consult extensively with the public to recommend a form of proportional representation best suited to Canada Should we raise or lower tax rate for corporations? Big corporations are not paying their fair share. The Conservatives reduced the corporate tax rate in the hope that corporations would re-invest the money saved and create more jobs for Canadians. That has not happened. Instead, corporations are sitting on some $600 billion saved via the tax cut. They are not re-investing in the economy. The Green Party would roll back the corporate tax rate to 19%, the same rate as in 2009. In the first year alone, this will yield $7.4 billion in extra

revenue which we will invest in skills training, education, energy efficiency, renewable energy and emerging technologies. We will not raise the current small business tax rate of 9%. Don Johnston, Liberal Party: Should we switch to proportional representation? Yes. Democratic reforms are central to our platform. Committees will select their own chairpersons, manipulative omnibus bills will be severely restricted, Senators will be independent, and Supreme Court appointments will be accountable again. Electoral reform is the priority. We want all parties to have the chance to weigh in on some options and then, within 18 months of our election, we will firmly choose a direction and begin legislative changes in time for the next election. Some systems emphasize giving people the option to select 1st and 2nd choices so that candidates that

have the support of a greater proportion of the electorate will get a higher portion of the vote. Other systems allow the addition of more MP’s based on the overall vote % but those MP’s wouldn’t be connected to specific communities. So there needs to be some talk. The NDP want to simply tell you what system they will impose. That’s a bit autocratic when you’re trying to create a more inclusive and democratic political system. But we welcome their support when we form the next government and regardless of the choice we expect the Greens will be rewarded by our decision at the next election. Should we raise or lower tax rates for corporations? Analysis actually suggests that when the Conservatives decided it was prudent to drop the corporate rate well below the G7 average it supported more international takeovers in the resource sector, kept the dollar high, and hurt manufacturing. We’re seeing the

results now. However Liberals don’t plan to raise the corporate tax rate for a number of reasons. We are in a recession and the tax rate has already been considered in corporate investment and job creation plans. We don’t want to slow growth any further. Secondly we plan to lower the rate for most small business to 9% and any increase in the corporate rate would increase the tax differential. That would be enough to prevent small businesses from wanting to expand further. The NDP plan to raise one rate while lowering the other would create a differential of around 8% which will hamper job creation even more. Instead we plan to grow the economy thru more emphasis on manufacturing, infrastructure investments, and targeted growth in green energy and clean technology industries. That will allow us to keep the corporate rate at a competitive level.

Kootenay News Advertiser Friday, October 9, 2015

National Newspaper Week: October 4-10 October 4 to 10 is National Newspaper Week. This is an important week for us, here at the Advertiser, and for the thousands of writers, designers, printers, shippers, warehouse workers and staff that make up the industry. And even though we live in an age where the printed newspaper seems to be waning, that perception is not entirely accurate. For the larger city newspapers, recent studies have shown that they are still read by a majority of the population, either in print form or online. In relation to smaller markets, such as the communities of the East Kootenay region, newspapers are still the only place to get local news and views, sports and the occasional feature that could only come from right here. Sure, a person couldn’t be faulted for not engaging in locally-generated news when there is such an abundance of amazing news and stories from around the planet. Some of these stories are from people writing about their trips, some are pictures taken by travellers, but for the articles that offer an indepth, researched take on an issue or happening, the source is usually always the same; a local newspaper. The people who work at a newspaper are in the unique position to have spent their careers in a field

where facts are king. If you would like to know whether or not a politician said something five years ago, chances are the local newspaper will have it on record. Want to know how the city’s budget racks up compared with the last one? The local newspaper will also have that on record. But most importantly, it will be staffed with people who know, through experience, what is important for you, the reader. They will know because over the years, through listening to you, and publishing your letters, how the local community ticks. This is as important today as it has always been. This is also why National Newspaper Week is still as relevant today as it always has been.

Hugs: Go out for a fabulous time at Aggies Fall Fling – a benefit dance to raise funds for education of Cranbrook Senior Caregivers. Thanks to Kevin for organizing it, all the volunteers who made it possible and the wonderful Big Band sounds of Noteables. Slugs: A big slug to a certain store in Cranbrook. I was behind some Americans and was horrified and totally embarrassed that they were told they don’t get exchange on their money! I apologized to them and let them know not all our businesses are like that. We encourage our southern neighbors to shop here and this is how they are treated. This store should be ashamed! They will not get my business anymore! Slugs: Those of you in customer service know that if you serve 100 people in a day, it takes one bad comment to deflate you. A very pleasant young man put my dishwashing pucks in the same bag as my marshmallows. How is he supposed to know that is wrong unless it is part of the Customer Service Training. Slugs: In a small store that generally has 1 til open I put my item on the counter. There was no bar on the til saying “CLOSED”. The cashier looked me in the eye and said, “They can help you over there, I am on break.” I was a lit-

tle shocked but moved my stuff, said nothing, because, once again, a very nice young man and obviously this is either how it is done or he hasn’t been told otherwise. A simple solution buy a little bar that says CLOSED. Hugs: I wish to send a huge hug to Kevin for his organizing the Benefit Dance supporting Cranbrook’s Care Givers On Friday, Sept. 25. His band, The Noteables, and all the businesses who contributed to it. Everyone there enjoyed the evening and are hoping for a repeat. What do you say Kevin? Slugs: To the person who, although rightfully exercising his/her right to express his/ her religious views, showed very little respect to others, including myself, from expressing our “socialist political views.” While you advised that I read the Bible, please allow me to suggest some great works by authors such as Lao Tzu, Karl Marx and Mohandas Gandhi. After all, as direct marketers themselves would say, “You can always discard the message!” Hugs: To the lady across the alley for the steady supply of fresh cut Stargazer Lily’s. Hopefully next year you also have a good crop of tomatoes and Stargazers. Slugs: To people who send in Slugs all the time. Surely you can find a few good things to be happy about. It would be nice to see a lot more Hugs printed in this section instead of all the slugs! Quit getting so Butt Hurt and Be positive people!!!! Hugs: A big warm hug of gratitude to my “new friend” who helped me at Superstore. Your generosity

Photos John Lyon, (left), and Brian Hay

The Kimberley Camera Club would love to have you come down and participate. by John Lyon The Kimberley Camera Club would like to welcome anyone interested in Photography to our first meeting of the

new season when we meet on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at 7 p.m. downstairs in Waldie Hall in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Our meetings are held on the 2nd.&

4th. Wednesday of each month starting in October till the following May. The first meeting (second Wednesday) of each month involves the general business

of the Club, usually lasting 30 minutes, short instructional sessions, an in-club competition (slide of the month), critiquing member’s images, and twice a season, we

judge & enter National Competitions. The second meeting (fourth Wednesday) deals with workshops and Club projects. Each year, the Club produces a “slide-

show” for public viewing which involves our Club members submitting images. This year the show will consist of a series of multi-media “minishows”. The last few years, we have scheduled the show for late winter-early spring (March). The Club’s main purpose is to develop photographic skills of it’s members through workshops, outings, constructive critiquing, and information exchanging. Our members range from “beginners”,to “veterans”,and our interests range from nature photography, landscapes, travel, still life, and night photography. Topics we discuss at our meeting range from lighting,to

composition,to depth of field,to name a few. If you are having problems understanding your new digital camera, bring your camera and the owners manual to a meeting and our members will probably be able to help you out. PLEASE DO NOT bring your camera to the 1st. Meeting of the season as there is usually a lot of business to attend to. Once again, the first meeting of the Club will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the lower hall in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at 97 Boundary Street in Kimberley. December is on the horizon and so the time has come to start planning your holiday festivities. This year, make a pledge that you won’t leave things until the last minute. Who needs the headache of harried scrambling to busy grocery stores or battling the crowds at the bigbox stores? Preparing early will help you organize a truly unforgettable event, whether it’s for work colleagues, friends, or family members. Start by considering whether you want to host a party at home or dine out. Fix the date and reserve a restaurant or caterer as early as possible. After all, you don’t want to be one of those disorganized people who have to settle for a less-than-ideal place just because it’s one of the few still available. Then, if you have a large enough budget, find a DJ to provide the music for your event. Your guests will have lots of fun on the dance floor to the sound of today’s hits as well as their very own special requests. Karaoke is always a popular entertainment

option as well. Once you’ve settled all those details, let your imagination run riot and think up ways to add some magic to your party. Plan an evening that will appeal to the majority of your guests, one that will require some amusing involvement on their part. Even the most dignified of people can let their hair down with some well-planned party games. If you really want to impress your guests, bring in a specialist to decorate your home or reception room in a tasteful holiday style. Don’t forget that their first impression as they enter the room is often what people remember most. If all this organization seems a little overwhelming and time-consuming to you, you could always hire a professional party planner, an increasingly popular service for busy people. Be sure to phone around early if you want to get the best!

OBITUARY

Grace Alice Currie 1928 – 2015 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Grace Currie announces her passing on Monday, September 28, 2015 in Cranbrook at 87 years of age. Grace was born in Grandora, SK on February 11, 1928. She received her schooling at Shelby School, Zion Academy and the University of Saskatoon. She taught at Lucky Lake and Eagle Creek, SK and worked at Young’s Books and Stationary. Grace was a steadfast volunteer for the CNIB and was a 47 years member of the Lady Lions. She enjoyed bowling and spending time with friends and family. Grace’s home was ALWAYS open to her family and friends. Grace is survived by her son Ken (Cathy) Currie and their children Shaun, Shenna, Chelsea and Chayce; her daughter Cheryl (Jeff) Popoff, her sister Bernice Pezderic; brother-in-law Ray Buhl and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 51 years Cecil Currie, son Dennis Currie, grandson Jason Currie, her parents John and Margaret Chapple, brother and sisterin-law Harold and Muriel Chapple, sister and brother-in-law Irene and Howard Schultz and her sister June Buhl. A graveside service for Grace will be held at Westlawn Cemetery in Cranbrook on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 11:00 am. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Grace may do so to the charity of their choosing. God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be So he put your arms around you And whispered, “come with me With tearful eyes we watched You slowly fade away. Although we loved you dearly, We would not make you stay A golden heart stopped beating Your hard working hands put to rest God broke our hearts to prove to us “He only takes the Best. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.
