Woman hails waiter for life-saving action Second time this year server has come to the rescue SHOOTING FOR CCAA GOLD

Laura RODGERS Abbotsford News

If not for her server’s quick thinking and first aid training, Rachael Brien isn’t sure whether she’d still be alive today. She was out for dinner on Tuesday night at Ricky’s Country Restaurant on Marshall Road with her 20-year-old son. She ordered “breakfast for dinner” – eggs, bacon and toast. Halfway through her meal, Brien took a bite of toast and began to choke. “I couldn’t breathe,” she said. “It was so scary.” Her son reflected her look of panic, and yelled for help. Feeling she was about to pass out, Brien stood up out of her booth, hoping to attract more attention. The next thing Brien knew, her server, Jordan Ketting-Olivier, came up behind her. He told her he knew first aid, and asked if she could cough it out. She couldn’t. He pounded her back, but she kept choking. He then wrapped his arms around Brien, just below her rib cage, and performed the Heimlich manoeuvre. “That got the food to pop out,” she recalled. Ketting-Olivier sat back down with her in the booth, helping her calm down from the crisis. As she finished the rest of her meal, he checked back repeatedly to see how Brien was doing. When she got up to pay the bill, she told the story to the host – and was told this wasn’t the first time the multi-talContinued on A4

Investigation continues into dozens of incidents Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Two men have been arrested in relation to a series of break-ins that have taken place in the Townline Hill area of Abbotsford since last November. Shane Conrad Takakenew, 45, of Surrey and Dustin Littlewolfe, 30, of Vancouver, were arrested Sept. 29 following an investigation that was headed by the crime reduction unit of the Abbotsford Police Department. Takakenew has been charged with four break-and-enters – on April 29, Aug. 8, Aug. 14 and Sept. 24 of this year. Littlewolfe has been charged with the break-in on Sept. 24. With a total of 38 break-ins and attempted break-ins recorded in the West Abbotsford area over the last 11 months, Const. Ian MacDonald said police are continuing to investigate to determine how many other incidents the pair might be involved in. The total value of the stolen property – mainly cash, jewelry and electronics – taken from those 38 sites amounted to $750,000. MacDonald said Takakenew and Littlewolfe are also being investigated for similar crimes in Surrey and Coquitlam. He said two factors were vital in the arrests: video footage obtained from cameras in the areas of the break-ins and assistance from RCMP in Surrey and Coquitlam. MacDonald said the “comprehensive and challenging” investigation also included the efforts of patrol, forensic, crime analyst and emergency response

This map shows the locations of 38 break-ins and attempted break-ins in the Townline Hill and Blueridge Drive areas of Abbotsford since last November. Abbotsford Police Department map team resources. He said police executed several search warrants to seize items believed to be connected to the break-ins. He said police will get in touch with the victims, and it’s not necessary for them to contact investigators. It could take some time to match the stolen items to their owners, MacDonald said. Police first reported the series of break-ins in mid-November 2014 after seven homes had been targeted in the Blueridge Drive and Townline Hill area. The largest theft of all 38 incidentsoccurred during this period, when $50,000 in foreign currency, jewelry and electronics were taken from one home.

At the time, police said all the thefts had occurred between 3 and 7 p.m. and involved the culprits getting in the homes by prying open a locked window. Police believed the suspects were watching the homes to determine when they would be vacant. MacDonald said the targeting of that particular area of Abbotsford led investigators to initially believe that the thieves resided in the neighbourhood. According to the provincial court database, Takakenew has three prior convictions for break-and-enter and one conviction for assault. Littlewolfe has prior convictions for assault, breaching his probation and mischief.

Ketting-Olivier says he has worked at Ricky’s uneventfully for eight years, but a similar incident happened just four months before, when he helped another woman choking on her food in a nearby booth. He had just renewed his first aid certification the day before, because he’s currently applying to the Abbotsford Police Department. Brien, for one, would be glad to see him on the force. “I think he’d make a great police officer,” she said. “He has a very nice demeanor about him, and he stays calm in tough situations.”

Amazing accomplishments of a down-to-earth man Mark

Rushton On the

Other Hand Unpretentious, rather than humble, is about the best word I can come up with to describe Chris Hadfield. He is a man who spent more than half a year in space, has flown on three missions beyond our atmosphere, is the first Canadian to walk in space, and commanded the International Space Station. And those are but a few of his incredible accomplishments. Yet to hear him speak about his experiences is to listen to a man describing what seem to be almost ordinary, though other-worldly, events. He is, beyond a doubt, one of the most classy and captivating speakers I have ever had the privilege to listen to. Despite all the time in space, Chris Hadfield is about as down-to-earth as you can get.

he spent on space walks outside the station. He brought forth a few chuckles when he said, while walking in space, he actually let go of the space station framework for a few seconds, just to see what it was like to be truly free of the bonds of Earth and man. One of Chris Hadfield’s greatest accomplishments, however, has been his ability

Describing the landing and extraction from the capsule that carried him back to Earth, and the effect on his body and brain from the re-entry, he said, “All you want to do is puke, but the guys helping you out want to talk, so you talk, then you puke.” He also drew smiles and chuckles from the audience at Abbotsford Centre last Saturday night when he told of the violent shaking astronauts experience in the first two minutes of liftoff, when the booster rockets propel them from zero to thousands of miles an hour, then the almost serenity of travel as the space shuttle separates on the final leg of the journey to the ISS. Though he is a colonel in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and from his first glider flight as a kid has flown 70 different types of aircraft, Hadfield was actually a civilian, though a member of the Canadian Space Agency, when he commanded the International Space Station, having retired from the military some years prior. And not only has he orbited the earth thousands of times in the ISS and space capsules, he has gone round our globe 10 times as his own “heavenly body” during the two times

Set a goal and do everything you can to achieve it.

to bring the appreciation of space to the masses. His use of social media, his photographs from space, and the recording of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” that captured the world have made him perhaps the most recognized and renowned astronaut of the modern era. His description of holding a guitar in the weightlessness of space was entertaining, as was the mention of the slight rewriting of Bowie’s song (with his permission, of course)

– “The astronaut died in the original version. Couldn’t have that!” An interesting aside to the song was that Hadfield had requested that NASA in Texas provide a guitar for the space station. Oddly enough, what was provided was a small instrument made right here on the Lower Mainland of British Columbia! Couple that with the Canadarm developed in Richmond, Hadfield’s basic military training done in Chilliwack and his first university experience at Royal Roads in Victoria, our province has played a prominent role in the exploration of space. Now in retirement from the military and CSA, Hadfield lives in Victoria with his family. What led him to become Canada’s most celebrated astronaut? He was nine years old when in 1969 he watched the first men walk on the moon and determined then that he wanted to go into space. Set a goal, he said, and do everything you can towards achieving it. He did just that, and the world, and space, is a better place because of that nine-year-old’s determination to succeed where few have gone before. markrushton@abbynews.com 34375 Gladys Ave., Abbotsford, B.C. Abbotsford Homeowners Want to Know The Value of Their Home, But Are Afraid to Ask! Abbotsford – A hassle-free service allows homeowners to receive up to date real estate market information speciÀc to their home without having to meet with a real estate agent. Some homeowners are reluctant to meet with a realtor as they may only be in the early stages of planning a move or may not yet know if they will move. “Should we sell or stay? How much equity do we actually have?” Often these questions cannot be answered without knowing the current value of your home. Determining the value of your home is based largely on comparing your home to similar homes that have recently sold. This comparative approach should consider several factors – features of each home, location, neighbourhood, length of time on the market, etc. However, access to this type of information is generally re-

served for the real estate agents and their clients. This free service provides each homeowner with a Real Estate Market Update speciÀc to their property. This update includes detailed sales information of similar homes that have recently sold within the homeowner’s area, as well as the current listings. This data includes a photograph of each home, asking prices and selling prices, the number of days on the market, price reductions and a complete description of each home. To have a free Market Update sent to you, specially tailored for your home, call this 24 hour free recorded message at 1-800-251-4944, enter extension #4811. A 78-year-old man is in hospital with a serious head injury after an incident in the parking lot of the Real Canadian Superstore on Monday afternoon. Const. Ian MacDonald said a 77-year-old woman was driving at low speed when she either slightly nudged the pedestrian or the pedestrian bumped into her vehicle. He said neither the driver, who remained on the scene, or witnesses were clear exactly who hit whom, but the man lost his balance and fell to the ground. MacDonald said police are looking into whether the man had a pre-existing medical condition. He remains in hospital in serious, but stable, condition.

Liberal candidate Peter Njenga defines himself by his charity work. Professionally, he’s an accountant, with a small one-man firm in Surrey. Politically, he’s faced a bumpy road in his campaign so far. After losing the party’s nomination vote for the riding of South Surrey-White Rock, where he lives and works, he was asked to run in Abbotsford – only to face scrutiny when a series of his recent, unflattering social media posts were unearthed. Since then, he hasn’t spoken to the media or shown up to all-candidates’ meetings. His party’s communications team says he’s too busy door-knocking to speak to reporters. But a large collection of online information he’s posted paints a portrait of the man – persistent, ambitious, a proud Canadian by choice, and a philanthropist guided by a faith-based mission.

Abbotsford NDP candidate Jen Martel believes voters are fed up with the Conservatives and ready for a change. “The labour movement is being targeted, scientists are being silenced, families and young Canadians are being forgotten and left behind, and the effects of climate change are being ignored,” she said. Martel, one of five federal election candidates vying to become the Abbotsford riding’s next MP, said she believes that many working-class people have become uncertain about the future under Premier Stephen Harper’s leadership. She said that is one of the reasons she decided to get into politics. “I want to help Canada once again be a country where I feel comfortable starting a family, and I know that my children will have a promising future. I want to help create the change that Canadians want and deserve.” Martel, at age 24, is the youngest candidate in the riding, but she said she feels that is an advantage because she is a “quick study” and she can use her “energy, enthusiasm and drive” to

across Canada,” Martel said. If elected in her riding, she said she hopes to provide a strong voice for Abbotsford in Ottawa. She said this includes drawing attention to the community’s infrastructure concerns, such as the Vye Road overpass, the extension of Marshall Road to Mt. Lehman, and the widening of the Trans Canada Highway. Martel said she will work with the city “to find cost-effective solutions that don’t pose a heavy burden on our tax bill.” Martel’s background includes a bachelor of science in biology and certificates in communications and advanced French. She has a range of non-profit involvement with organizations such as Special Olympics and the Fraser Valley Irish Dance Association, and has served as the vice-president of her union local.

that would be a healthcare issue because if we’re feeding an inferior product to our population our health will deteriorate and there will be an impact on our healthcare. Supply management needs to be taken care of.” He said local issues such as dealing with flood plains in Abbotsford will also be big and climate change will make those discussion even more timely. Fowler said, unlike the Conservatives, the Green Party will work more to help municipalities get the funding they need. According to Fowler, another issue that seems to have been overlooked is climate change. “I don’t think it’s being talked about enough,” he said. “It seems to be all about the economy and while the old three parties are talking about moving around old furniture, we’re talking about remodeling the whole building. I do think there is a fear of change when it comes to renewable energy but we have to change because the environment isn’t going to support the way we’re doing things. “We’re not just tree huggers and pot smokers – we’re a fully fledged party,” he said. “Our economic policies are pretty right-wing but socially we’re left – I think we’re outside the typical political spectrum.” Fowler said he’d obviously like to win the riding but is realistically aiming for 10 to 15 per cent of the vote. “If more young people voted, I think myself and the party as a whole would do extremely well so we’re really trying to reach that younger vote,” he said. “We need to get our voice into parliament so we can start helping people.”

tax cuts for the middle class, and plans to repeal a bill which allows Canadian citizenship to be revoked. But when a series of posts he’d made on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn were unearthed in late September, he joined the long list of candidates shamed by their online comments. He cited false numbers for refugee aid, speculated whether terrorists were starting forest fires, and compared his height to Hitler’s. Njenga – known to write long Facebook posts on his faith, charity work, his marriage and his love of Canada – went silent on social media, aside from a two-line apology post. He attended neither of the riding’s two debates, and party staff told The News he was too busy door-knocking to take media calls. Unlike Davies, his former South Surrey-White Rock rival who herself resigned over online propot comments, Njenga stayed in the race. The official line, from Liberal spokesperson Oliver Duchesnau, was simply “we accept his apology.”

A University of the Fraser Valley-hosted debate for the Abbotsford riding on Oct. 1 was attended only by NDP candidate Jen Martel and Green candidate Stephen Fowler, but both made use of the venue to focus on their higher education platform. Ed Fast, the riding’s Conservative incumbent, couldn’t attend as he was in negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership in Atlanta. Mark Warawa, the party’s candidate for the neighbouring LangleyAldergrove riding, read a brief statement in his stead. Liberal candidate Peter Njenga and MarxistLeninist Party candidate David Mackay both could not attend. The debate opened with a question about tuition fees, which Martel used to segue to her party’s recent announcement that they would phase out federal student loan interest within seven years. “It’s absolutely wrong to treat students as a profit centre,” she said. Fowler answered by citing the Green Party’s plan to abolish all tuition fees in Canada by 2020. “People say, ‘How does that work? Why is that? That’s going to put us under,’ ” Fowler remarked. “There are many good-economy nations in the world, like Germany, Norway, Finland and Sweden, who also have zero tuition fees and are doing very well.” Warawa’s brief opening statement, on Fast’s behalf, outlined the Conservative platform in general terms. “Friends, on the things that really matter – jobs, living within our means, freer trade and keeping Canadian safe – we’ve got it right,” Warawa said. Martel and Fowler then discussed a variety of issues, including unpaid internships, the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Syrian refugee crisis. Throughout the exchange, both candidates remarked on often sharing values with each other, though the specifics of their parties’ plans differed.

Shows set for Valley Concert Society From classical to Latin, jazz to baroque, the Valley Concert Society’s coming season of performances will bring a variety of musical styles to Abbotsford ears. Their first concert of the year, held Oct. 16, will be Salsa Baroque, performed by Montreal-based early music quintet Ensemble Caprice, featuring rarely heard Baroque pieces from Latin America. On Dec. 4, they’ll present A Strad Christmas, where violinist Jasper Wood and pianist David Riley perform classic Christmas tunes with a jazz twist. On Jan. 30, they’ll present the St. Lawrence String Quartet. American pianist Thomas Pandofi performs in recital on March 4 and offers a workshop for music teachers and a master class for students. The Ensemble Vivant quintet from Ontario performs April 1, and the Laudate Singers choir from North Vancouver are on May 7. All the concerts take place at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Pre-concert talks are held in the lobby at 6:50 p.m. for those wishing to learn more about each program. UFV’s Dirksen backs into golf greatness This year has seen Dirksen step up on the Cascades golf team and put together some impressive rounds. It’s her second year on the team and she’s evolved into a leadership role with the team. Dirksen placed third at the opening tournament in the Okanagan but then had a breakthrough performance on Sept. 20 at the second tournament in Surrey. She placed first, beating out the second place golfer by seven strokes. “Starting off the year I didn’t play as well as I could have,” she said, of the first tournament. “I felt a lot of pressure but the second week when I won at Northview it boosted my confidence quite a bit and felt more comfortable.” She continued the momentum with a second place showing in Victoria on Sept. 27 and then capped off the season with in Chilliwack on Oct. 4. The win in Chilliwack clinched Dirksen the Pacwest women’s title. She shot an 83 and 76 to seal the victory. Continued on A32

Dirksen, UFV eyes CCAA championship Continued from A31

“That was my best round of the season, she said. “I started off a little rough but I pushed hard and buckled down. I couldn’t stop smiling. The win sends Dirksen to the CCAA National golf championships, also in Chilliwack from Oct. 13 to 16. She will have home course advantage at the event, which sees some of the best young golfers from all across the country compete. She said she’s ready to take on some of Canada’s best. “My confidence heading into (the Pacwest finale) was probably at a six, now I feel like I’m at an 11, she said. “It just gives me so much hope heading into nationals. Dirksen said course knowledge and familiarity could help to give her and her teammates an edge.

“Just to know you’re at a course where you know every inch of the golf course, it really drops a lot of the nerves and wondering what you’re heading into for nationals. It’s kind of a relief to be playing at home, and it feels really great.â€? “It’s good because we have such a huge advantage,â€? she said. “We know the course so well and what to expect and what to do when you’re in trouble. I’m out there playing almost everyday. I’d love to win and I know I have the ability do that.â€? The 2013 MEI grad still has three years of athletic eligibility left at UFV and said she hops to continue to learn and grow under the Cascades coaching staff. Both of last year’s champions, the Holland Hurricanes (men) and the CĂŠgep Champlain St. Lawrence Lions (women) – will be returning to nationals to defend their titles.

Birds draw with Chiefs Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News

The Fraser Valley Thunderbirds and the Vancouver North East Chiefs couldn’t separate themselves last weekend. The teams met for a home-and-home series on Saturday and Sunday and both games ended in ties. Fraser Valley travelled to Coquitlam on Saturday to play the Chiefs and allowed a 4-1 lead in the second period to disappear. The Chiefs fought back in the second and third periods to finish the game in a 5-5 tie. Abbotsford’s Zac McKee opened the scoring for the Thunderbirds, and local product Jake Mulder scored the team’s second goal. Abbotsford’s Kyle Davis drew an assist on Mulder’s goal and local Andrew Sorensen scored the Thunderbirds’ fourth goal. The teams met again on Sunday in Abbotsford for the Thunderbirds home opener and played to a 3-3 tie. Fraser Valley again had a 3-2 lead heading into the third period but the Chiefs tied the game up. McKee and Mulder drew assists on Fraser Valley’s third goal. The Thunderbirds sit in eighth place in the 11-team British Columbia Major Midget League and now have a record of one win, two losses and three ties. Fraser Valley hosts the Vancouver North West Giants on Saturday at 4 p.m. and then hit the road on Sunday to play the Giants in North Vancouver. For those that want paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, the buyer needs to opt for the sport package that also upgrades the wheels from 15-inches to 16-inches. The wider platform makes the 2016 Smart much more stable at all speeds, in fact on the highway it was very smooth and could easily keep up with traffic. DYER Ivan Ivan passed away at the Menno Hospital on October 2, 2015 at the age of 97. Predeceased by wife Barbara. They enjoyed one another’s company for 71 years and had many, many adventures together including boating down the Inland Waterway from Montreal to Florida four times, developing a real estate business, building houses, travelling the U.S. and Canada and many other ventures which always kept the two of them busy. Finally settling in BC, Ivan and Barbara first moved to Mission, Salt Spring and finally to Abbotsford, where they spent their retirement years. Packing 3 lifetimes into one is an amazing feat, but that’s what this little guy did; leaving behind many, many friends. Survived by son Bob, daughter Nancy (Grant) Dohery, grandchildren Hugh Dyer and Evan Dohery, sister-in-law Dureen (Rolf) Zeller and niece Susan and Karen. Heartfelt thanks to the staff at Menno Home East 2 for all the loving care they took of Dad and Mom in their remaining years. A Celebration of Ivan’s life will take place on October 15, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Funeral Chapel, A Simple Cremation, 11969 216th Street, Maple Ridge, BC.

HEKE / WHITTERS Olive Olive passed away peacefully October 3, 2015, surrounded by family. She was predeceased by her sons Bob and Alan, the father of her children, Richard (Dick) and her second husband Ted. She is survived by her son Doug, wife Linda, her daughter Barbara, husband Jeff and her sister Margaret along with 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Through the years of her long and wonderful life Olive enjoyed camping, boating, travel, golf and loved her bridge games. She loved her family and friends and will be sadly missed by all. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at Fraser River Funeral Home at 2061 Riverside Road, Abbotsford, BC.

REGINA Antonietta (Annette) June 16, 1944 ~ October 1, 2015 We are deeply saddened to announce the loss of Antonietta (Annette) Regina on October 1, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband Mike. Survived by her children Tom, Maria (Lucio), Rosa, her grandchildren Nicholas, Tianna, Jacob, and extended family in Vancouver and Italy. She immigrated to Canada in 1964 and began to establish her new life here. A few years later she met her true love Mike. They married and started their family. Antonietta was kind, compassionate and loved with all her heart. Her home and family was her life and she always took pride in being a wife, mother, and nonna. Her love shined through everything she did, especially her wonderful cooking, and this will be deeply missed by all. She had a warm spirit that made anyone who met her feel welcome and comfortable.…. she was everyone’s mamma or nonna. She will never be forgotten and her love will live on in our hearts forever. Although we are sad that she has passed away, we are comforted in knowing she is at peace and reunited in heaven with her soulmate and with other loved ones previously departed. We know that she will be watching over us. Ciao per ora. Essere felici e godere la vostra vita. An informal celebration of life will be held at a later date. Online condolences to the family may be made to:
