IIO official, firearms expert testify at trial TRE VOR CR AWLEY
A firearms technician, investigating officer and bystander entered their testimony into the court record on Thursday in the
trial of an RCMP officer. Richard Drought is charged with careless use or storage of a firearm following a police incident in October 2012 in Cranbrook.
The case is being heard in Cranbrook Supreme Court in front of Justice Trevor Armstrong. Drought was in pursuit of a stolen SUV from a carjacking near
Yahk that ended on a rural property near the top of Victoria Avenue near the College of the Rockies Gold Creek campus in the evening of Oct. 2, 2012.
A Family Trajectory
The SUV entered a property, turned around and drove towards a police cruiser that was parked at the entrance.

Council has authorized city staff to enter into a professional services agreement for the completion of a Forest Management Plan
for city-owned forest lands. The agreement is with RW. Gray Consulting Ltd, and is up to a maximum value of $13,500, which will be funded out of the
city’s Fire Hazardous Fuel Fund Reserve. Coun. Norma Blissett was pleased to see the motion come forward. She asked whether the

tainly is a fire hazard,” Blissett said. “That area really puts Park Royal in danger.”

The annual Cranbrook Health Care Auxiliary Fashion Show is coming up Thursday, Oct. 15 and tickets are still available. The event is one of the auxiliary’s biggest fundraisers of the year and all funds raised will go towards purchasing equipment for the ICU expansion at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Odette Rouse, who is with the auxiliary, said the event has been going on for over 30 years and usually brings in around $10,000 at the auction. “We auction all the clothes that the models are wearing and it’s all clothing that came to the thrift store,” Rouse said. “We select the best and we put it up for auction that night.” Tickets are $25 and include appetizers and a refreshment. Rouse said the event usually sells out, but there are still a few tickets left this year. “All of our money goes in the same pot — whatever event we do, the thrift store, the gift shop — it all goes towards buying equipment for the hospital, which profits everybody in town,” Rouse said. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the fashion show and the event starts at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Cranbrook Health Care Auxiliary Thrift Store.

A unique and special relationship between two countries will be celebrated next week, Thursday, Oct. 15, in Cranbrook. The Cranbrook Garden Club will be planting a new, permanent 700-bulb tulip bed in Cranbrook, courtesy of Holland, to mark the ties between that country and Canada. “This year is the 70th anniversary of the Dutch-Canadian Friendship Garden,” said Debbie Sinclair, with the Cranbrook Garden Club. “The Dutch first gave to Canada 100,000 tulip bulbs in 1945, as a symbol of appreciation for the role Canadian soldiers played in the war, and for the hospitality Canada showed. Canadian forces were key in the liberation of Holland from German occupation during the Second World War. And Canada hosted the Dutch Royal Family in exile during the war. As an interesting

The maternity ward of Ottawa Civic Hospital in which she was born was temporarily declared to be extraterritorial by the Canadian government, thereby allowing her citizenship to be solely influenced by her mother’s Dutch citizenship. To commemorate the birth, the Canadian Parliament flew the Dutch flag over Peace Tower. This is the only time a foreign flag has flown over the Canadian Parliament Building. Sinclair said that this year being the 70th an-
niversary of the Tulip Festival, the Dutch decided they would provide the tulips to communities across Canada

— normally they are sent to Ottawa. “There were only 140 gardens available,” Sinclair said. “400 communities applied, so we feel very fortunate to get one.”
Cranbrook is one of 15 communities in B.C. to get the tulip garden. Sinclair said the City of Cranbrook was very helpful in giving space for the 700 bulbs, which will every spring will blossom into red and white tulips. The bulbs will be planted near the intersection of King Street and Van Horn Street, in the space around the heritage locomotive on display, recently repainted by the Rotary Club. The bed for the tulips has been established around the Rotary International sign there, and Sinclair said the tulips will be a spectacular sight for both locals and motorists passing through. The Garden Club will be planting the bulbs on Thursday, Oct. 15, starting at 1 p.m. Also taking part will be veterans with the Royal Canadian Legion and students from Gordon Terrace Elementary School — a good combination of young and old, Sinclair said. And the public is invited to attend.

It takes a village … to help a nursing mother Robin Knight
Kimberley, BC, in a lot of ways, is like a lot of rural towns in Canada trying to find its balance between tourism and industry to keep the city alive, not really affected by a lot of the winds of change that blow through the big metropolises like Vancouver and Calgary. But some things are consistant. Everywhere you go, people have babies. And everywhere there are babies, mothers need
the option of nursing their babies. Recently a news story aired about the difficulties of finding a place to breastfeed a child in Montreal. A new trend of placing stickers on the outside of stores that allow breastfeeding mothers to come in and sit down to feed their babies is growing in Montreal. The Kimberley City Bakery has decided to follow suit, and is encouraging other shops and restaurants to
City fire plans Continued from page 1
Kevin Weaver, the city’s Business and Economic Development Manager, replied that the portion of land Blissett was referring to is in a transition area. “A portion of it is still Crown land — closer to the community forest — and some of it is still in the city’s jurisdiction, and some of it is also owned by the college,” Weaver said. He also confirmed it would be included in the plan. The city noted that the revenue generated through the harvest treatment of lands identified in the forest management plan will be used to replenish the Fire Hazardous Fuel Fund Reserve and fund future hazardous fuel treatments. Back in February of 2014, the city council of the time authorized staff to develop a $10,000 application under Columbia Basin Trust’s (CBT) Climate Resiliency Adaption Program for the development of the proposed Forest Management Plan. City staff noted that it was then that council authorized the funds for the city’s portion of the project costs to come from the fund reserve. The city prepared an application for the CBT’s consideration, however during the long adjudication process, the CBT discontinued the program prior to the application being approved for funding through the
Trust. In developing the Forest Management Plan concept and associated CBT applications staff worked directly with Robert Gray, of R.W. Gray Consulting Ltd., which the city noted is a well-regarded fire ecologist in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. and Canada. Gray is one of the principal authors for the 2003 BC Firestorms Report, also known as the Philmon Report. Despite the CBT application not being approved Gray commenced preparation of the plan in association with Geoff Byford of the local forestry consulting firm “Maple Leaf Consulting”. Staff have paid out the two invoices — totaling $11,517 — submitted by Gray for the work completed to date. Completion of the project will resume upon approval fromcCouncil. City staff said they continue to support that proposal and “as demonstrated by this summer’s fire season, feel this type of plan is more important than ever for safeguarding the residents and property within the city,” staff wrote. The city said the plan will also likely be able to be applied outside the city limits to help address fire hazards posed by unmanaged private lands in nearby rural areas like Gold Creek.
join them in this effort. “After having 2 young children under the age of two, it is something that is close to my heart,” says Michelle Forbes, co-owner of the bakery. “There’s nothing worse than having a screaming baby and not being able to find a quiet corner to feed in.” Without being required to purchase anything, mothers are being invited to enjoy a complementary tea, and sit down to feed
their babies. Although BC law states that mothers have the inherent right to nurse their baby wherever and whenever they would like, it is not always easy to find a convenient place to do so, and public favour and law do not always see eye to eye. With the looks of strangers, difficulties of teaching babies to latch, easily distractible babies, and a host of other issues that
may make it more difficult to nurse, having places that you know accommodate nursing mothers makes it much easier to encourage outings. “With a baby that only weaned four or five months ago,” Forbes states, “I know what it’s like. When you’re a new mother, it can be overwhelming. There is so much to learn and juggle. And sometimes you just need a quiet place
to feed your baby and take a little break. They say it takes a village to raise a child. We are trying to help be part of that village.” Forbes states that the response they have received since putting up a sign on their door on Tuesday, October 6th has been overwhelming. “It shows how important this is to the community,” she says. The bakery is hoping to encourage other
businesses to join this movement to make it easier for nursing mothers when they are out in Kimberley and through the Kootenays, and hope other businesses will join in this movement and hang their own signs in support of breastfeeding mothers. Interested businesses are invited to contact the Bulletin if they will be participating to allow us to share your information with the public.
Witnesses testify at RCMP trial Continued from page 1
Gunshots from a Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol were fired into the vehicle. The driver of the SUV, Nickolas Bullock, was shot twice in the shoulder and the wrist, and was travelling with an underage female who can’t be identified. Lauren MacAuley, a forensic specialist who is trained in firearms testing, impact damage assessment and shooting scene reconstruction, broke down her analysis of the bullet impact and damage to the SUV. MacAuley said seven shots travelled in a trajectory from the front passenger side of the windshield angling towards the drivers side. Two more shots traveled in a trajectory from the rear passenger window towards the front of the drivers side. Under cross examination, the defence counsel suggested that,
with MacAuley’s evidence, every shot was directed towards the front driver’s side of the vehicle and that bullets used by RCMP officers are designed to fragment. Defence also cross-examined Sherman Mah, the officer assigned to the case from the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), which investigates any officer-related incidents of death or serious harm to determine if an officer committed an offence. The shooting incident on Oct. 2, 2012, was only the second investigation from the IIO, which was a newly created investigatory body at the time. Defence counsel criticized Mah for not having the necessary equipment to document the scene, while Mah said he relied on evidence collected— and equipment—from
local RCMP officers before his arrival. A nearby homeowner saw the police cruiser and heard what he
described as ‘tapping’ in quick succession, had audio testimony played for the court, as he is currently out of

Economic issues at the forefront of debate

ednesday evening was a clash of priorities. On one hand, there was the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce All-Candidates forum at the Heritage Inn. On the other hand, there was the Canucks-Flames season opener in Calgary. One is a fast-paced contest involving a lot of stick-handling and the timing of shots, while the other one is hockey. However, the debate itself provided just as much entertainment. Maybe entertainment isn’t the right word, but it was an illuminating

Don Johnston (Liberal Party), Wayne Stetski (New Democratic Party) and Bill Green (Green Party). It was a stark contrast from the debates seen on TV featuring the federal leaders. While Stephen Harper, Tom Mulcair, Justin Trudeau and Elizabeth May look for the snappy soundbites during the televised forums, it was a much more toned down affair in Cranbrook. While there were a few heated exchanges, it was a relatively cordial event with a few moments of levity where the candidates shared a laugh along with the crowd. That’s what stuck out the most, as the candidates did a good job of sharing their vision— and their respective party’s position—on each of the questions and issues fielded by the moderators. Each candidate was given a different question with one minute to answer it. The format rotated with one set of prepared questions that the candidates were given from the Chamber and one set of ques-

Each answer had to be given in under one minute, while candidates also had rebuttal cards worth 30 seconds of time. The one complaint I had with the format is that each candidate answered different questions, and everyone didn’t have the chance to sound off on each particular inquiry. However, that’s where I have to give kudos to Dave Struthers, the President of the Cranbrook Chamber of

Commerce, who stepped in and recognized when there was a question that was significant enough to warrant a response from all candidates. On the issues themselves, much of the debate focused on policy initiatives such as the economy, taxes, infrastructure and trade deals among many others. The candidates set the tones in their opening remarks; Johnston lamented the ‘cat-fighting’ during Question Period, Bill Green touted reconciliation with First Nations as one of his main reasons for
running, Stetski took issue with the Conservative management of the country for the last nine years, while Wilks leaned on his record of getting federal funding for projects and programs into the riding. I don’t like thinking of straight-up winners and losers in debates, rather each candidate had moments of strengths and weaknesses. Bill Green noted that Canada is in what he called a ‘structural deficit’, meaning that with reduced tax levels, the government is spending more than it takes in. Other issues he focus on

included transitioning to a green economy and eliminating poverty. Stetski’s strategy was a mix of taking the Conservative record to task while laying out NDP policy on whatever question was at hand. Stetski criticized the Harper government for relying too heavily on oil economy, while promoting social policy such as the NDP’s $15a-day national daycare plan and investments in apprenticeship training programs. A repeated theme in Johnston was the Liberal Party’s plan to invest $60 billion over the next decade in what he called the largest infrastructure funding plan in the history of the country, along with the need to advocate rural issues on the national stage. Wilks leaned on his ability to funnel federal dollars into the riding, namely for infrastructure projects on the Trans-Canada highway. He also used his concluding statement to paint the Liberal and NDP as parties who will raise taxes. If one-liners are your thing, Johnston skewered Wilks, wondering if legislated pay cuts to federal ministers for running a deficit were retroactive, noting that there were seven deficit budgets under the Conservatives. Wilks also had a chance to take a dig at Stetski, pulling up a quote from Mulcair noting the NDP leader would like to bring back some form of long-gun registry after Stetski explicitly ruled it out.

Family Dynamic Cranbrook Community Theatre launches season with ‘Making God Laugh’
B a r ry Co u lt e r
Cranbrook Community Theatre’s family-themed season opens tonight with an intimate look at ourselves — that is, a family whose members seeks to grow and change, and at the same time stay unchanging. “Making God Laugh” takes us into the heart of a Catholic, middle class family — Bill and Ruthie and their three children, Maddie, Richard (Ricky) and Thomas — and takes us on a 30year trip from the kids’ early adulthood to their own edge of retirement. The decades are encapsulated into three family holidays — rather, four, sort of — with the three grown kids returning home each time from their careers in the world. We meet Ricky (David Booth), the son who’s always “sowing his oats,” and seems to have trouble moving on from the athletic triumphs of his youth. Ricky’s entrance tells us he’s the jester of the piece, with his fantastic, fabulous ‘80s hair-do, and his enthusiasm for to the fad of the day, changing with each decade. Maddie, the daughter, is pursuing an acting career, though that seems to have trouble getting off the ground. Thomas (Woody Maguire), the “good son,” is training to be a priest when we meet him in 1980 — the great pride of his parents. Bill the father (Michael Prestwich) is a gentle and stable soul, the beta to Ruthie’s alpha. His consistency is what holds together a group of personalities always in danger of drifting apart. But the play, and the characters, revolve around the large-sized personality of Ruthie, the mother (Melodie Hull) — and the family nemesis that is her tra-
ditional holiday fare, the Fantasia Dip. We develop a great affection for the characters as they present themselves with all their quirks, as their family dynamic is introduced and played out. But as the years progress, a sober, darker undercurrent appears under the comedy — with almost a tragic element. What is the nature of this tragedy? Ruthie herself will tell us — it’s what makes God laugh. You will find out when you go. Ruthie is a lioness, but her cheerful bourgeois demeanor masks angers and disappointments that are largely directed at her daughter. It is Ruthie’s relationship with Maddie that is the main storyline — and their pulling apart from each other. It is a relationship fraught with failure to communicate or to understand. The spirit of each decade is captured in broad strokes, a few key phrases, a prop, Ricky’s latest fashion or acquisition. The characters’ lives, plans that have worked out or not, and their inner reactions to them, are revealed in a telling sentence or line. The characters’ lives
change greatly, but we in the audience follow along, and get to know them better and better. But it’s Ruthie’s inability to change along with her children that forces the play to its final crisis. It will be Bill’s sudden emotional response to the play’s final crisis that will pull everyone back together. There are many madcap comic moments in “Making God Laugh,” and the actors plumb depths to give us a great emotional edge. As we clip through the years, it’s not until later on that we realize we’re watching a universal portrait of our own families, our difficulties, failures, estrangements, small victories, reconciliations and enlightenments. “Making God Laugh,” written by Sean Grennan, directed by Trevor Lundy, and produced by Brenda Babinski, launches Cranbrook Community Theatre’s 2015/16 season, and opens tonight at the Studio Stage Door in Cranbrook, Friday, Oct. 9. It runs Oct. 9, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, 21, 22, 23, 24. Tickets are available at Lotus Books or at the door.

Humbug and Hypocrisy
t’s a week since the Russians began their air-strikes in Syria, and the countries that have already been bombing there for over a year — the United States and some other NATO countries — are working themselves up into a rage about it. The Russians are not bombing the right people, they are killing civilians, they are reckless, dangerous, and just plain evil. A statement last weekend by NATO’s 28 members warned of “the extreme danger of such irresponsible behaviour” and urged Russia “to cease and desist.” When a Russian warplane attacking Islamist targets in northwestern Syria strayed across the frontier into Turkey for a few minutes, US Secretary of State John Kerry said that the Turks would have been within their rights to shoot it down. The weather was poor, the target was close to the border, and the Russians apologised afterwards, but NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that the incursion “does not look like an accident.” So what does he think the motive was, then? Russian pilots are getting bored, and are having a competition to see who can stay in Turkish airspace longest without getting shot down? And the wicked Russians are killing civilians with their bombs, we are told. Yes, of course they are. So is the American-led coalition with its bombs. Unless you are fighting at sea or in the open desert, there will always be civilians in the same area as the “legitimate” targets. It’s particularly unbecoming for the United States to act holier-than-thou about the use of Russian air power in Syria, when it is simultaneously trying to explain why American planes bombed a hospital in Afghanistan last month and killed 22 civilians. Neither Americans nor Russians gain anything by killing civilians; it’s just an in-
evitable by-product of bombing. But the biggest Western complaint is that the Russians are bombing the wrong people. Contrary to American and European assertions, they are indeed bombing the “right” people, the troops of Islamic State that Western air forces have been bombing for the past year. But the Russians are also bombing the troops of the Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham. They might even bomb the troops of the Free Syrian Army, if they could find any. Don’t they realise that these people are trying to overthrow the evil Syrian dictator, Bashar al-Assad, whereas the cruel and deGwynne luded fanatics who serve Islamic State are trying — Dyer well, actually, they are trying to overthrow the evil dictator Assad too. This brings us to the heart of the matter. Western propaganda makes a systematic distinction between Islamic State (bad) and the “opposition” forces (all the other groups). The problem is that there is really little difference between them: they all want to overthrow the Syrian regime, and they are all Islamist jihadis except for the tattered remnants of the Free Syrian Army. The Nusra Front was created in 2012 as the Syrian branch of ISIS (now Islamic State), and broke away early last year in a dispute over tactics and turf. It is now the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda. Ahrar al-Sham was also founded by an al-Qaeda member, and is a close military and political ally of Nusra. And until the propaganda needs of the moment changed, even the United States admitted that the “moderate” elements of the Syrian opposition had collapsed. There are no reliable statistics on this, but a good guess would be that 35 percent of the rebel troops confronting Assad’s regime belong to Islamic State, 35 percent to
the Nusra Front, 20 percent to Ahrar al-Sham, and ten percent odds and sods including the Free Syrian Army. In other words, at least 90 percent of the armed opposition are Islamists, and probably no more than 5 percent are secular, pro-democratic groups. There are not three alternatives in Syria. There are only two: either Bashar al-Assad’s regime survives, or the Islamists take over. Really serious Islamists, who hate democracy, behead people, and plan to overthrow all the other Arab governments before they set out to conquer the rest of the world. They are probably being a bit over-optimistic there, but they would be seriously dangerous people if they commanded the resources of the Syrian state, and they would be a calamity for Syrians who are not Sunni Muslims. The Russians have accepted this reality, decided that it is in their own interests for Assad to survive, and are acting accordingly. The United States and its allies, by contrast, are hamstrung by their previous insistence that Assad must go on human rights grounds. They cannot change their tune now without losing face, so they don’t bomb Assad’s forces, but they persist in the fantasy that some other force can be created in Syria that will defeat both Assad and Islamic State. Moreover, the leaders of America’s two most important allies in the Muslim world, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, are determined that Assad should go (mainly because he is Shia, and they are Sunnis), and they would be very angry if the US helped him survive. That, plus American anger at Russia over Ukraine and lingering hostility from the old Cold War, is why NATO is condemning the Russian intervention in Syria so vehemently. But it is all humbug and hypocrisy. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

Murder at the Freight Shed What’s Up?
JANUS:
Then & Now
Jim Cameron
L
ate on the night of March 27, 1899, Felice Pasto, his crony Mike Messico and two others arrived at the house of Jennie Howard, a wellknow madame in Cranbrook’s red-light district on Clark (6th) Avenue, near Van Horne Street. The men, having visited two other houses in the district and obviously drunk, approached the residence seeking admission. Miss Howard refused and the men became abusive. Two hangers-on at the Howard place, W.A. Matheson and William “Kid” Mansfield, took it upon themselves to confront the group outside. They were quickly chased back indoors whereupon Mansfield seized an iron poker and, with Matheson, ventured once more into the fray. Matheson struck Messico with his fist while Mansfield dealt Pasto a blow across the face with the poker before again retreating to the house. It appeared the melee was over and the visitors appeared to leave the area soon thereafter. The CPR freight shed, constructed in September, 1898, stood near Van Horne Street across from the houses of prostitution and it was near there shortly after midnight that witnesses described hearing men arguing followed by two gunshots. CPR employee John Scanlan, walking the track a short while later, came upon the body of Edward Ryan, a fellow employee, shot dead near the shed. Ryan, an “inoffensive, good-natured” young man of about 25 years of age, was apparently returning home after spending his day off on a spree of his own. He was accosted by Pasto who, mistaking him for

The CPR freight shed has proved a vital addition to the Royal Alexandra Hall since it was moved a few hundred feet north in 1994. The location of the murder of Edward Ryan was likely somewhere in the southern end of the present day parking lot.- Photo Cameron 2015 Mansfield, took his revenge on the wrong man. According to the local coroner’s inquest held the next day, “Edward Ryan came to his death at the hand of F. Pasto,” on March 28, 1899. It was the first murder in the history of Cranbrook. Although the coroner’s verdict was clear, the exact location of the slayer was not. Damion Alfonse, questioned soon afterwards, admitted to being in the company of the accused earlier in the evening and stated that they came to his shack about 1:30 a.m. afterwards, at which point Pasto declared, “I shot the man.” He further stated that he had seen Pasto in possession of a pistol several times previously. He added Pasto and Messico left for Elko intending to head for the United States. Provincial Police Constable Barnes se-
cured the assistance of Harry McVittie the next morning and together they boarded a freight train headed to Wardner. When they arrived they secured arrest warrants from the local magistrate (Wardner still held some importance at the time as the initial East Kootenay depot of the CPR) and then caught a train to Jaffray where they attempted to board yet another train. Unfortunately it was moving at the time and they could not run fast enough. They then convinced some CPR section men to take them to Elko via rail handcar. It was a hard pull, as they say, and they gave up three miles west of their destination leaving Barnes and McVittie to walk the remaining distance. A light snow had fallen the night before and along the way they discovered footprints they believed belonged to the wanted men. They
followed the track into Elko, arriving about 8:30 p.m., at a store where Pasto and Messico had bought provisions before continuing their escape. Barnes and McVittie, electing to stay overnight in Elko, left by wagon the next morning, following the tracks leading towards the Elk River. The culprits apparently tried to ford the river twice and failed both times. The trackers came upon the wanted men standing naked near a fire by the river attempting to dry their clothes. Not surprisingly they put up no resistance. According to Constable Barnes, Pasto admitted to killing Ryan while Messico denied any involvement in the murder. Pasto’s overcoat contained a pistol which was later determined to be the murder weapon. The group returned to Elko for the night
where Barnes and McVittie, obviously men of some stamina, attended a dance at the local hotel. The entourage arrived in Cranbrook by train the following evening. A preliminary hearing held on April 6, confirmed the coroner’s findings. Dr. King, who performed the post-mortem, stated that a .38 calibre bullet entered Ryan between the fourth and fifth rib on the right side and passed down through the heart and stomach lodging near the eleventh rib. The lungs were filled with blood by internal hemorrhage. Jennie Howard confirmed the facts of the initial fight at her place. Nettie McDowell, another madame located near the crime scene testified, along with Carl Webber, her piano player, to hearing shots and seeing several men quarreling near the freight shed. Ryan was buried during a bitter spring snowstorm in Cranbrook’s original cemetery near Baker Park [see Janus: Cranbrook Then and Now – Volume One “Digging up Bones”]. William Mansfield, the intended victim, was given a three month sentence for vagrancy. Mike Messico was released. The trial of Felice Pasto was held in Nelson in early June. Upon the jury’s guilty verdict Pasto, protesting his innocence, was ordered “to be taken from hence to the place from which you came [the Nelson jail] and to be taken from there and hanged by the neck until you are dead; and may God have mercy on your soul.” The execution was slated for August 10, 1899. On July 27, the Governor General of Canada commuted Pasto’s sentence to life imprisonment. He was sent to Victoria and there, rather later than he intended, his trail grows cold. The resting place of Edward Ryan is no longer known. Jim Cameron is the author of Janus: Cranbrook Then and Now – Volume One, available at various locations including the Daily Townsman.

Wheat Kings and pretty things Kootenay Ice continue east hoping to turnaround road trip in Brandon Friday night
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
To say Kootenay Ice head coach Luke Pierce wasn’t exactly pleased with his club’s performance Wednesday in Saskatoon might be the understatement of the season. And who can blame him. It’s pretty tough to find many bright spots in a 7-2 drubbing. But as night turns to day and the world keeps turning, you have to move on and that’s the hope as the Ice (1-5-0-0) roll into Brandon to take on the Canadian Hockey League’s fourthranked Wheat Kings (31-0-1) Friday night. “You don’t have a choice -- this is the beauty thing about the game and the evil thing about the game,” Pierce said. “You don’t get two weeks to go and think about it. We’ve got to play and we have to play a really good team. “We don’t get to say, ‘Okay, we need to go and play a midget team now to get some confidence back.’ No. We’ve got to go play the best team in the country, maybe.” In fact, just a week ago, the Wheat Kings were the top-ranked team in the entire CHL. Sure, they’ve slipped to the lowly fourth position

out of 60 teams in the country, but they also happen to have outscored their opponent a combined 14-3 in their previous two outings -- a 6-0 win over the Regina Pats and an 8-3 thumping of the Vancouver Giants Tuesday night. If the task wasn’t tough enough, the Ice will go with right wing Jaedon Descheneau (undisclosed injury) and defenceman Cale Fleury (upper body injury). Descheneau was injured during the first period of Tuesday’s 5-3 loss to the Prince Albert Raiders, while Fleury was knocked out of action during the second period of Wednesday’s loss to the Blades. Neither are expected to return for either of the
remaining two games on this four-game eastern swing. While those might provide excuses for a young team on its first lengthy trip of the year, Pierce doesn’t buy it. “It’s a hole for sure, but it’s not an excuse for our team,” Pierce said. “I thought we used it as one [Wednesday in Saskatoon]. “We can’t use those excuses. It’s the 20 guys who pull the jersey on to play the game that have to figure it out. I’d love to have those guys in our lineup, but they’re not there so there’s no point concerning ourselves with it. “Here you’ve got Descheneau out, you’ve got Fleury out and guys are getting opportunities to

It hasn’t been the most pleasant road trip for the Kootenay Ice, evidenced above as left wing Roman Dymacek (#10) receives an elbow to the face from Blades right wing Cameron Hausinger (#8) Wednesday night. The Ice hope to get back in the win column Friday when they visit the brandon Wheat Kings. get in and step up and play. Not just getting into the lineup, but guys who are already in the lineup are getting a chance to play bigger minutes. Take advantage of it. Do something.” If the Ice are going to end a three-game losing streak that began last Saturday in a 5-1 loss to the Lethbridge Hurricanes, it’s going to require a simplistic approach to the game.
The Wheat Kings boast depth and talent like few other clubs in the Western Hockey League, featuring NHL prospects Jayce Hawryluk, John Quenneville, Ivan Provorov and Tim McGauley, just to name a few. If the Ice get into a run-and-gun exchange with the Wheat Kings, they may very well run into the same fate the Vancouver Giants did
earlier this week. “We’ve been preaching simplicity to our group and, for some reason, we have a hard time buying into that concept. We want to complicate the game and we want to play it like the Brandon Wheat Kings play it,” Pierce said. “We’re not there yet. We’re not. For us to have any chance, we have to be simple, we have to be smart and
we’re going to have to sacrifice some stuff. “I’m really interested to see what our response is like…After a drubbing, another character test for our group Friday.” Puck drop at the Keystone Centre in Brandon is set for 7:30 p.m. After Friday’s tilt in Brandon, the Ice begin their trek back home, stopping in Moose Jaw for a date with the Warriors Saturday (7 p.m.).

First, Reid sent cash considerations to the Osoyoos Coyotes in exchange for 6-foot-1, 170pound defenceman Devon Langelaar (1997). Langelaar, a native of Red Deer, skated in four games with the Coyotes this season, tallying one
assist. “We’re only carrying six defencemen, so we were looking to bolster our back end,” Reid said Thursday. “We want to create some healthy competition.” Langelaar joins veterans Jordan Busch, Justin

Meier, Zach Morey, and rookies Lucas Purdy, Tyler Van Steinburg and George Bertoia. Second, Reid sent future considerations to the Revelstoke Grizzlies in exchange for the playing rights to 5-foot-11, 185-pound forward Brodie Buhler (1996). “We’re looking to bring him in to push our top-six,” Reid said. “We know who he is. We played against him. He’s very physical and tough to play against. “We’re pretty excited to have him and he’s pretty excited for the opportunity as well.” Buhler, a native of Revelstoke, spent the 2014-15 season bounc-
ing between Junior ‘A’ leagues across Canada, splitting time with the Melville Millionaires (Saskatchewan), Drumheller Dragons (Alberta) and Steinbach Pistons (Manitoba). Prior to the 2014-15 season, Buhler played 99 games with the Grizzlies (2011-12 through 2013-14), registering 18 goals and 31 points. As a result of the additions, Reid is also set to move forward Justin Van Tetering. The Dynamiters GM was hoping to find an opportunity to move Van Tetering within the KIJHL, but as of print deadline Thursday, nothing had transpired.
Should no trade opportunity present itself, Van Tetering will be given his release. In seven games this season, Van Tetering went without a point. The Dynamiters are at home for a pair of the games this weekend , the first against their division rivals the Creston Valley Thunder Cats. The Thunder Cats sit second in the Eddie Mountain Division and after last year’s post-season series, there’s no shortage of history between the clubs. After Friday’s matchup with the Thunder Cats, the Nitros play host to the Grand Forks Border Bruins Saturday.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar
ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’ll wake up to a bit of chaos in the morning. Tempers could flare. Try not to sit on your anger. Much will come out in this short period that could temper your mood and response. Ask for more feedback from a trusted associate. Tonight: Know when to call it a night. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Your creativity might be challenged. Don’t worry -- you will find a solution. If you detach, you will see a hassle from others’ point of view. A brainstorming session will open one possibility after the other. Try not to nix someone else’s ideas. Tonight: Take off ASAP. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You could be a lot surer of yourself than you have been in a while. A discussion about what has been happening needs to be kept private. Your thoughts and discussions will reinforce your focus, as well as those who live with you. Tonight: A partner demands your attention.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Your sense of direction emerges in a conversation. This quality can manifest on a theoretical level as well a physical level. Your upbeat attitude has a profound response from those around you. Know that you are lucky right now. Tonight: TGIF! LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You finally will clear up a money matter that has been bothering you. You have reason to be angry, but choose a different time and place to process it. You will make a big difference in what happens in the future. Tonight: Whatever you do, make it memorable. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You’ll zoom through your day, trying to complete as much as humanly possible. You have a roughness about you that turns people off. If you see this pattern happening, think about your style of communication. Avoid sarcasm at all costs. Tonight: Whatever you touch works. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Your enthusiasm comes forth
Tundra
and allows more to happen. You might notice that you have no tolerance for any kind of emotional drama right now. Be clear with others about your terms in order to relate more effectively. Tonight: Be with a favorite person at a favorite place. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’ll see the role that a friendship plays in your life. Your secretive tendencies often stop people from connecting with you. Try to allow others to see the real you. You might hear some criticism, but the compassion you draw out will be more authentic. Tonight: Hang with friends. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Others come toward you. A boss might have plans that involve you. Understand what this person wants, and know that you likely will have to carry out any requests that he or she makes. Keep your opinions to yourself; don’t undermine your relationship. Tonight: Till the wee hours. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) News comes in from a distance. You could be taken aback by
everything you have to do. On one hand, you’ll be trying to grasp the meaning of what was said. On the other hand, you’ll be replaying the actual words. Focus on the message. Tonight: Tap into your imagination. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) One-on-one relating could take a new twist. You suddenly might find yourself in an argument. Few people understand the real meaning of your words. Allow a loved one to discuss his or her feelings. You’ll find this discussion to be unusually powerful. Tonight: A quiet dinner. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Try not to make too much out of a personal matter, and do your best to ignore someone’s temper flare-up. Relax and do your thing, but don’t be surprised if someone invites you to join him or her in some spontaneous plans. Tonight: Paint the town red. BORN TODAY Singer/songwriter John Lennon (1940), British Prime Minister David Cameron (1966), actor Tony Shalhoub (1953)

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My husband of five years has just learned that his daughter is engaged, and I am already stressing about the wedding. My husband was married when we met. I didn’t intentionally date a married man, but he pursued me, and I told him that if he wanted to date me, he must leave his wife. It only took three months, so he was obviously ready to go. Still, I’m the “other woman.” I have tried to be considerate, avoiding the places where his ex shops. He has lunch regularly with his daughter, but the only time his daughter sees me is for a short, awkward time at holidays. His daughter came to our wedding, but didn’t stay for the reception. I don’t blame her. I’d hate me, too. I don’t want to go to her wedding. I feel it would stress her out, and I don’t want to ruin her special day. I think the focus should be on her, not on people whispering about the woman who broke up her parents’ marriage. I’ve been the butt of bitter comments already. I also don’t want to confront her mother. If the bride wanted me there, I would go, but I am pretty sure she doesn’t. Should I go and wish them well, then leave? Should I stay away altogether? My husband would have a better time if I were with him, but it’s not his big day. Please tell me what to do. -- Somewhere in California Dear California: You are wise to understand the situation, and considerate to put the bride first. Your husband should ask his daughter directly if she wants you there. If she says no, then stay away. If she says “yes” or she doesn’t care, it might be best for you to attend only the ceremony, and your husband should remain for the reception. But keep in mind that you are now married to Dad and in order for the situation ever to normalize, you will need to endure these encounters so that, over time, they won’t seem so unusual or stressful. Dear Annie: I am continually fascinated at the people who are quick to criticize retired husbands for not taking on 50 percent of the household chores. Why do these stories never include the expectation that the wife will wash the cars, mow the lawn, repair the broken shades, change the air-conditioning filters, clean the gutters and on and on? Everyone is quick to yell at the husbands for not doing the dishes, but why shouldn’t the wives be sharing the other tasks? -- Mike Dear Mike: We agree that the wives who are retired should pick up some of the slack on the other end, but these are not exactly equal chores. Dishes, laundry and housecleaning have to be done every day. Mowing the lawn or cleaning the gutters is seasonal and periodic. You could count up the hours spent doing each of these if you are determined to make it “equal,” but we don’t believe household chores should be tit-for-tat. You might be better at some things and your wife at others, and it’s fine to focus more on the work you do best. And the rest you should do because you love each other and these things still need to be done, retired or not. In Memoriam The Broken Chain
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly; in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Forever in our hearts. Love always, Norma, Arya, Kirstie, Courtney & Otto.

5. Content: After e-mail, the most preferred Web
content is news, sports, financial information, entertainment news, and shopping – in that order. Sixtytwo percent of Internet users visit online newspapers for local news, compared with 39 percent for the local TV station Web site and 23 percent for the local radio station site. Not even Yahoo! or AOL’s Digital City can top this.
6. Retailers prefer newspaper sites: Sixty-five percent of retailers report that newspaper sites are efficient in assisting them in meeting marketing needs compared with other sites.
7. High profile: Research.net reports that, among top executives (CEO, CIO, CFO or owner/partner), Internet advertising ranked above over all other media measured for: “Where I prefer to find our about new products, “Where I prefer to receive information about companies, and “Where modern, up-to-date brands advertise. At the same time, these early adopters of technology also skew younger than the traditional newspaper audience. Forty percent of online newspaper users are aged 18-35. 8. Reinforcement: Seventy-six percent of online newspaper users also read the newspaper in the past seven days, and repetition increases awareness. The Internet Advertising Bureau found that, by increasing the number of online banners from one to two per week, branding results on three key metrics increased 42 percent making online a great, inexpensive way to increase the branding lift of traditional campaigns. 9. Quality: Seventy-five percent of advertisers generally said newspaper Web sites’ advertising was as good or better than other Internet sites.
10. Mix: A variety of recent studies have demonstrated the power of online, when included in a mix with traditional media, to elaborate the brand message. Newspaper print and online products combined have the highest penetration and most desirable audience of any other local medium. SOURCE: Newspaper Association of America

The Power of Giving Thanks
hy do we give thanks this weekend? Canadians don’t have the kind of mythology that the U.S. has about Thanksgiving. For them, it’s part of the founding myth of their nation. They tell the story of the Pilgrim settlement, which aboriginal people call the Pilgrim occupation of the land. For Canadians, thanksgiving is a harvest festival. A festival at the time of gathering the harvest is one of the oldest customs in the world. It’s a time set aside to give thanks. India’s rice harvest festival, Pongol, is held in January. Nigeria has a New Yam Festival which falls in July or August. Many cultures celebrate the harvest as a sacred time. In Swaziland, the ceremony known as Incwala is the most important traditional holiday. It celebrates both the harvest and binds the nation to its king. Canada’s first thanksgiving was celebrated by Martin Frobisher in Newfoundland in 1578. The first official Canadian Thanksgiving Day was celebrated on April 5, 1872 in gratitude for the Prince of Wales’ recovery from an illness. In 1957, Parliament declared the second Monday in October as “a day of general Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.” When we give thanks for harvest, we acknowledge that while there is much we can do, at a deep level it’s beyond
our control. Most of us have forgotten that. We don’t know what it means to count on the seasons. We don’t have to worry about getting enough rain or sun at just the right time so that our crops can grow. We don’t have to fertilize or cultivate the land or bring in the harvest. When we need food, all we have to do is hop in the car, go to the store or the farmer’s market where it’s ready for us, pre–packaged and shrink–wrapped. We can get what we want when we want it — even strawberries in April. It seems as if we are in control. We’ve lost that sense of looking to the skies for the right weather, that sense of waiting for crops to grow in their own time, that sense of gratitude when everything works together. Part of the result of such an “instant society” is that we’ve forgotten how to be grateful. We are much more adept at grumbling and complaining. Dennis Prager, author of “Happiness is a Serious Problem: A Human Nature Repair Manual” writes that “Gratitude isn’t an emotion most of us cultivate.” Even on Thanksgiving, we are more likely to concentrate on the turkey or the television or getting the leaves raked up than on giving thanks. But “gratitude has an extraordinary power to improve our lives”. It’s more than simply good manners. According to Prager, “the value in giving thanks … is nothing

less than the key to happiness … The secret to happiness is gratitude. All happy people are grateful, and ungrateful people cannot be happy. We tend to think that it is being unhappy that leads people to complain, but it is truer to say that it is complaining that leads to people becoming unhappy. Become grateful and you will become a much happier person.” That’s why, even when life sucks, we can still cultivate this attitude of gratitude. Perhaps it’s more important than
ticed. “Unhappiness is easy. Happiness takes hard work.” He suggests that the pursuit of moderation, depth, wisdom, clarity, goodness, and the transcendent will help us attain happiness. It can be hard to do. Like most useful skills, it takes years of practice before it becomes second nature. This is one reason that religion, sincerely practiced, leads to happiness. It ingrains the habits of thankfulness, and as gratitude becomes part of who we are, we open the door to gladness. Margaret Visser gives

the same advice in her book, “The Gift of Thanks”. “Gratitude is always a matter of paying attention, of deliberately beholding and appreciating the other.” This Thanksgiving, we can resolve not to take the gifts in our lives for granted.
