AV Times to close Black Press Group Ltd. has announced the decision to close the daily Alberni Valley Times within the next 60 days. The twice a week Alberni Valley News will remain in operation. “Despite the considerable efforts of the staff, the Alberni Valley Times has been experiencing declining circulation and advertising revenues over the past few
years and with a paid circulation base of less than 25 percent of the total households in the market area it is no longer a sustainable business model,” Black Press president Randy Blair said in a statement last week. “Black Press will continue to invest in the Alberni Valley News which has proven to be a successful free distribution twice
weekly community newspaper serving the Alberni Valley. “We would like to thank the employees of the Alberni Valley Times for their efforts and will support them in their endeavours to find new employment,” Blair added. A final publication date for the AV Times had not been announced by the time the News went to press.

No one was injured but a trailer burned to the ground in a structure fire on Lakeshore Road on Friday, Oct. 2. “There’s a double wide trailer and it was fully involved when we got here,” said Sproat Lake Volunteer Department deputy Chief Rick Geddes of
the fire which triggered an automatic mutual aid response from neighbouring fire halls. The fire was called in to 911 by a neighbour at 4:33 p.m. and six Sproat Lake trucks, one from the Port Alberni Fire Department and one from Beaver Creek responded. “Nobody was home at the time,” said Geddes “No injuries.”
Speaking on Monday, Geddes said that a cause had yet to be determined. “I don’t know that we’ll find one at this point, it’s undetermined,” he said. “Nobody was home and there was nothing obvious so we’re focusing on electrical issues.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com twitter.com/AlberniNews

Fall is for meditating over mushrooms SANDY MCRUER

Hunting for chanterelle mushrooms can be a wet affair, as Sandy McRuer, centre, and two acquaintances discovered.
and weed out any that are not chanterelles, or poor quality ones. After that you will be pretty confident in picking for yourself. Or you can earn a little pocket money from a lovely afternoon in the forest. Don’t expect to get rich though. And make sure you cut the ends of the stems off. It’s a good idea to cut them instead of picking
them for two reasons. First, the dirty ends will make all the other chanterelles you pick dirty too. And second, there are often buds for more mushrooms about to grow at the bottom end of the stem. By pulling them up, these buds don’t get a chance to grow into more mushrooms. If you do want to pick for yourself, there are plenty of very
good recipes on the net you can try. They are popular in soups and with chicken or pork dishes. Fresh is always better. But you can also dry them or even pickle them.
The San Francisco Mycological Society has a whole cookbook devoted to cooking all kinds of mushrooms. Where to look? I have given some idea already as to the kind of places to look for chanterelles. That is 30- 70-yearold Douglas fir forest. Around here, if there
RENEWING OUR DEMOCRACY with Gord Johns and Tom Mulcair
Ten years ago, Stephen Harper promised to strengthen our economy and clean up Liberal scandals. But his record is clear: unfair elections, a scandal-ridden Senate, and Conservatives charged with illegal lobbying, illegal campaign contributions and bribery. Tom Mulcair, Gord Johns and the NDP are ready to bring change to Ottawa. Our plan: Make 2015 the last unfair election by bringing in proportional representation. Seek a mandate to abolish the unelected, unaccountable Senate. Repeal Harper’s Unfair Elections Act. This election, there’s a clear choice for change. In Courtenay–Alberni, only a vote for Gord Johns and the NDP can defeat Stephen Harper’s Conservatives. Ready for change? We’re ready too. get to know what they look like first hand is to go to a mushroom buying station and ask to have a look at the ones that have been purchased. The buyer should be OK with that because you are potentially going to sell to him. very year about this time, I look forward to spending some time wandering around in the forest without the structure of a path to confine me. I’m picking mushrooms, specifically chanterelle mushrooms. I don’t know, it’s just something that I’m compelled to do. Call it voices in my head. On a nice day the dappled sunshine filters through the trees and warms my body without overheating it. And the places where the mushrooms are generally have little salal or windthrow. The second-growth Douglas fir is getting quite tall. The slopes are gentle. Yellows and oranges add colour to the greens and earthen tones of the forest. There are patches of moss to rest on and contemplate the passing of the season with the dog. Lots of people are afraid that they’ll pick poisonous ones. And yes, there are ones to stay away from out there. Some are deadly. But mostly they just make you sick. Still not pleasant. Chanterelles are a very good place for a beginner to start. They are one of the easiest to identify. The gill structure is unique. Rather than blade-like gills they are rib-like. That is, the gills are rounded rather than flat. Two kinds are found around here: white chanterelles and yellow ones. Both have that same gill structure I mentioned. The commercial buyers only buy the yellow variety. An excellent way to
are too many hemlock or deciduous trees, you will have no luck. Gentle slopes near the bottom of a valley or a slope are good. Stay away from areas with too much swordfern or salmonberry. Ideally there should be little underbrush. Sometimes you’ll think, “This is perfect habitat. Why have I not seen any chanterelles? It may be because someone has been there before you. You might be finding little chanterelle chunks and bits lying around. I hope this is enough to get you started. Don’t get lost out there, eh? Carry a compass and a map. Cell phone apps only work where there is reception. Tell someone where you are going and when you’ll be back.

Inflammation: it’s a hot topic for fall Healthy Living

an a healthy diet reduce and prevent inflammation? Are there specific antiinflammatory foods? There are many factors in our culture and environment that can affect the body’s immune response. These factors can either make inflammation worse or help prevent it.
Acute inflammation is the body’s defense against foreign invaders, which help to repair tissues and promote healing. But, when the immune system continues in overdrive, even when the work is done, chronic inflammation is the result. Prolonged inflammation can damage healthy tissues such as joints and arterial walls. Environmental triggers that will aggravate chronic
inflammation include smoking, lack of sleep, sun exposure, bacterial or virus infections, elevated blood sugars, carrying too much weight around the abdominal area, obesity and high blood pressure. Prolonged environmental stresses such as these can promote the development of long-term chronic conditions such as arthritis, cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and diabetes.
There are compounds in some food that have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. These are found in vegetables and fruits that are rich in natural anti-oxidants. In the usual diet, including at least five servings of a variety of colourful produce will help boost the intake of these powerful phytochemicals and anti-oxidants. Coldwater fish, such as salmon, sardines and herring all have

such as oatmeal, barley, legumes like chick peas and kidney beans, whole grain breads and vegetables/fruits with skins and seeds. These real foods take time to prepare and cook, and offer many benefits and antiinflammatory boosts. Busy lifestyles and eating fast foods on the run will have a health cost in the long term. Investing the time for slow ‘real’ food, meal preparation and sitdown family meals can offer many health benefits, including supporting a healthy immune system into the senior years. sugars and deep-fried convenience foods. If these proinflammatory foods are a regular part of the daily diet, the body will have reduced defenses against other environmental triggers that cause chronic inflammation. Foods with a low glycemic index will release sugar into the bloodstream more slowly than foods that are more refined and have a high glycemic index, such as white bread, white rice, snack crackers and french fries. The slower the blood sugar is released into the blood, the better for the insulin response. Aim for higher fibre foods with a low glycemic index more often,

A serving is the size of the palm of the hand, or a deck of cards. Nuts and seeds have monounsaturated fats that also help with inflammation. Adding hemp hearts, chia seeds and ground flaxmeal to low fat yogurt, or salad, will boost the amount of these healthful compounds in your diet for an antiinflammatory boost. f you or someone you know finds or loses a pet, post it on Facebook as soon as possible. If you are not on the most popular social media site in Canada, send the picture and details to someone who is, and ask them to post it for you. This advice is intended for everyone who cares about animals, and that includes Dog Control, SPCA and rescue groups. When a tiny white Maltese went missing on Aug. 30, her family immediately posted a lost ad to Facebook. It was shared by many, but could not be cross referenced with any found ads because none were placed by the dog pound that had her for days, or the rescue group that had her the week after that. BZ was clearly not a stray. She was a lost dog wearing a red harness dropped off
by a good samaritan who’d found her. Unfortunately she wasn’t microchipped or wearing a collar with an identity tag. She also wasn’t licensed since she lives out of town. She did have a tattoo, however it was just too faded to read. As her family frantically searched in a rural area of Kelowna where they’d been camping, BZ was safe at the dog pound. Valerie and Dwayne Bell hadn’t thought to call there though. They were too busy putting up pictures, knocking on doors and talking to everyone they saw. Fearing she’d been taken by wildlife after days of finding nothing, the family was advised to call Dog Control just in case. Val had already spoken with the SPCA and was told they knew of no dogs matching her description. She then called Kelowna Dog Control and left a message. They didn’t
CITY of PO RT A L BE RN I NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Pursuant to Sections 890, 891, and 892 of the Local Government Act, Notice is hereby given that a Public Hearing will be held in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 4850 Argyle Street, Port Alberni, BC on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 6:00 pm to hear representation about the following proposed bylaw: A. “Zoning Amendment No. 8 (4965 Gordon Avenue - Hall), Bylaw No. 4888” APPLICANTS: J. and C. Hall - The applicants are applying to amend the Zoning Bylaw to facilitate a subdivision application to create two small, single family residential lots. The proposed amendment is listed below.
call back until Sept. 10 when they informed the Bell’s the 72-hour holding period had expired and BZ had been re-homed. Shocked to hear this, Valerie rushed over to speak with them in person and was met with insolence by the young woman at the front. Val requested they call whoever had her pup to let them know her family was desperate to get her back. She was rudely
told no, and that all adoptions were final. Not willing to give up, the distressed owner took it up with a superior who agreed to make a call. That resulted in being told the same thing: there was nothing they could do, it was done. Val warned she’d keep fighting for BZ and took her story to the media. After a CTV News interview aired on
Sept. 13 she received an anonymous call telling her to look on the Okanagan Small Dog and Rescue website. Sure enough BZ was on the adoption page and re-named Peanut. When she contacted Wendy McIntyre at the rescue she was told if they hadn’t taken her, the dog probably would have been euthanized. She was also informed her blind eye had
been removed at a veterinary hospital. The rescue agreed to tell the 90-year-old adoptive owner about the situation and BZ was promptly given back. “She won’t let me out of her sight for a second,” Val said. “She’s a mess. She cries all night unless I’m right there touching her.” All of this likely would have been avoided if Dog Control
or the rescue had simply placed a lost ad on Facebook when they got her. There’s an amazing community of animal lovers that share lost and found pictures to different Facebook pages as well as their own. With so many people working together to reunite pets with their families, the Bells would have been alerted if a picture of BZ had been posted.
