Letter: Why is it? Great, another election year—why? When I went to school some 52 years ago, I was taught that in a democracy the majority of the people voted to elect their favourite MP or MLA and their party to govern. So for all this time, I seem to have been misled. Why is it the people who contribute the most to the economy of this country get the least in return and the people who contribute the least seem to get the most our of the economy? Why is it that our great elected officials abuse Canada’s Joe (or Josephine) Lunch Kit and small business so bad? After all, they are the backbone of this nation. They pay the Canadian govern-
ment’s bills. Very little is said about them in this election year. Why is it that the only time these politicians ever do anything is during an election year? Why don’t they do some of these things in the previous three years. I simply can’t believe that the voting citizens of Canada swallow this political crap. Why is it that very little attention has been given to the people who actually built this country? Mr. Mulcair suggests $15 per hour for minimum wage. What about the pensioner getting $15 per hour? Why is it the great power of the Canadian Parliament, weakkneed positions that allow oil companies, insurance companies and communication
Charity Boxing helps people right here When you think of boxing, you generally think of athletes throwing and landing punishing blows, sweaty gyms and the occasional round of trash-talking. The annual Charity Challenge Boxing Event, put on by the Cranbrook Eagle’s Boxing Club, Freightliner Trucks and a host of sponsors, has been changing that image for years now. Today, when you think of boxing in Cranbrook, more often then not you picture a child in
need getting a wheelchair. “What we do is take anonymous nominations all year long for local families in need,” said Tom White, organizer. “You know— kids who aren’t doing well, cancer patients and people down on their luck.” And the event has made a difference. Last year the tournament raised just under $29,000. That meant people such as a single mother with three kids, one with Downs Syndrome who were grieving from the

companies to rip off the average Canadian citizen? It may be alright for them when the taxpayer pays their cell phone, heh? What don’t they understand? These companies have a book of excuses for the next 20 years. How stupid are these elected people? When oil was $50 per barrel, gas was $.56 per litre. When oil was $120 per barrel, gas was $1.38 per litre. Now at $44 per barrel, gas is at $1.20 per litre—and this has nothing to do with the US dollar. Why is it politicians— have you ever heard them say the word yes or no? In all the years I have watched interviews and question periods, there is always a rambling roundabout answer that really isn’t an answer. So how do you ever get to understand what they stand for? Why is it the people
you vote for never have any say in this so-called democracy? These local candidates you go to the polls to elect just represent a democratically-elected dictator. Remember, voter, you only exist on election day. The day after you become extinct. Why is it we allow the press to influence our political system so much? For example, in the first month, Stephen Harper was shoved in with the idiot Mike Duffy in all the news reports. I wish the press would concentrate on the real election issues and leave the scandal out of it. For as long as I can remember, our senate has been somewhat of a disgrace anyway. Why is it that the majority of the people vote, yet the minority seem to rule? This type of democracy has me quite confused. Why
sudden death of the father, numerous other people down on their luck, and the above mentioned girl who needed a wheelchair, received funds to make their lives a little easier. In other words, the event is about local people donating to help other local people in the community. But the charity isn’t only about the boxing. “In between the boxing, we have a live auction and there are really good donated items that raise quite a bit of money. People like Kenny Bridge and the other sponsors really help.” said White. “It really blows me away how
many people opened their wallets. People were bidding $1,500 on $1,000 items just to help out.” And this year’s event is sure to bring smiles to a lot of faces. The main matches include Steve Mercandelli vs. Randy Rothwell and Stacey Kormillo vs. Lori Johansen. Other matches include various amateur bouts sure to get the crowd warmed up before the main event. “It’s going to be a great night,” said White. This year’s event happens on Saturday, October 24 at the Eagle’s Hall with the festivities starting at 7 p.m.
do our politicians pay more attention to the minority than the majority? Why is it our immigration system is badly flawed and our weakkneed politicians are so afraid of offending their own image. They are blind-sided, again, by the minority. In news interviews and reports I have seen, immigrants have stated they came to Canada for a better life. My question, is why then do you bring your old life with you? Well, Mr. Politician, when exactly are you going to wake up? These people have destroyed their own country for the past 100 years and now they come to destroy our country. In my 69 years of life, people who wear masks were either trick or treaters, thieves, or terrorists. Why have these people the right to come

• What benefit is it for me? • They are all the same anyway, so what’s the point? • (This one is priceless) They are not real people anyway, so it is just a waste of time. Summation: Anyone earning less than $25,000 per year should not pay income tax. I have not heard anything to benefit the average guy or pensioners. Remember all your local candidates, whomever is elected, will not represent you, the voter, but instead their leader. Please, exercise one of the last rights you have and vote. I think I will vote for the man with the least experience. I am sure he won’t be any worse than the others and besides, he has a nice hair-do. ~Ben Bauer Cranbrook

here and change our rules and laws. Food for thought, my fellow voters. Why is it the present elected people only now want to do anything for you and the country? Why don’t they do some of these things in the previous three years? They now make billions of dollars in promises, which any reasonable thinking Canadian knows they can’t keep. Where will the money come from? I would suspect poor old Joe Lunch Kit will get it again. I would suspect all the promises won’t be kept anyway. They haven’t been in the last 10 years that I know of. Why is it that in conversations with a few of our young people between 19 and 25 years of age, when I ask the question who would they vote for I get these answers: • Vote for what?

2016 Scion The launch of the 2016 iM proves that Scion is very much alive and kicking and not on life support, as some naysayers have suggested. For a while, though, it appeared as though the Toyota’s Scion division might go the way of the wooly mammoth. Or in automotive parlance, the way of Oldsmobile, Mercury and Pontiac. Sales have been slowing lately, exacerbated by more Scion models being retired from the lineup than joining. However Toyota isn’t an automaker that gives ground easily (if at all) and the all-new iM wagon represents a reaffirmation that the Scion ship is being righted. Based on the current Toyota Corolla platform and sold overseas as the Auris, the Japan-built iM could be just the right kind of vehicle that Scion’s youthful target buyers can get behind. If the brand didn’t exist, perhaps the iM might have become the next Toyota Matrix. Whatever the name, the iM’s sportwagon-style design is easy on the eyes and certainly looks considerably smarter than Scion’s re-
tired or soon to retire xB and xD boxes and the tiny iQ runabout. It also helps that the wagon/hatchback has been fitted with additional body cladding and a very cool set of 17-inch alloy wheels. The iM’s other claim to future fame is its overall spaciousness, although the passenger compartment isn’t quite as voluminous as that of the top-ranked Mazda3 5-Door (both are tied for cargo space behind their split-folding rear seats). On the plus side, with the back seat folded the load floor is perfectly flat. The large liftgate makes it easy to load/unload bulky gear. Passengers are treated to premium-feel cloth seats that are particularly supportive in front and are complemented with generous legroom in back. For drivers, the dashboard and control panel are clearly laid out and covered with soft-touch materials. In this regard the iM’s quality appearance is right up there with the Volkswagen Golf. Turning the key activates a Corolla-based 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that’s rated at 137

horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. From a performance perspective, it could use more power, particularly when launching the iM from a dead stop. The test car was equipped with the optional continuously variable transmission (CVT) and not the stan-
dard six-speed manual gearbox. The rate of acceleration begins to perk up once fully under way and the CVT’s seven programmed “steps” make their presence felt. The iM also becomes livelier when the CVT is switched to Sport mode, although you can expect
the fuel-economy rating of 8.3 l/100 km in the city and 6.3 on the highway will suffer a bit. Even so, it was a good idea for Scion to give drivers the choice. Where the iM does some of its best work is traversing twisty back-country roads, where the well-tuned suspension helps keep the car flat and stable in the turns while taking uneven surfaces in stride. The well-bolstered sportstyle front seats are a big help here, too. Right out of the box, all Scions arrive well trimmed out and the “mono-spec” iM that starts at $23,000, including destination charges, is no exception. Aside from the cool alloy wheels, you get dual-zone air conditioning, backup camera, power-folding outside mirrors and a 7.0-inch touch-screen display for the sixspeaker Panasonic audio system with iPod connectivity. Among the few dealer-installed options is a navigation system plus a number of additional dress-up items. A sunroof is not available, nor are the latest crash-mitigating safety features that are beginning to migrate onto the options list of similar competing vehicles. As was the case with the Toyota Matrix, the Scion iM’s millennial target audience is likely to broaden out by a few years, or perhaps decades. Some younger shoppers will seek something with more spring in its step, while more seasoned buyers will be drawn to the car’s attractiveness, versatility and affordability. In any case, the iM should contribute to Scion’s revival movement.
Safety Tip:
Does it rival the Volkswagen Golf in terms of interior quality? That’s subjective, but the design incorporates some decent quality for the price you pay.

What's the secret to Toyo's winter traction? WARNING: Although Toyo uses purified walnut shells and a reaction is unlikely, it is suggested not to chew on our tires, especially when the vehicle is moving!
We've got nuts!
Toyo uses purified crushed walnut shells, a renewable resource, in their Observe line of winter tires that act like tiny spikes that bite into any slippery surface. Toyo also uses other technologies for unbeatable winter traction. Some not so nutty! Find out more at:

bestselling author Toby Hemenway and “beyond-organic farming” superstar Joel Salatin. The concept of permaculture is closely linked to water, and designers like Rob believes that through intelligent landscape design, it is even possi-

Excercise, friendship and awesome scenery during the outing to the Steeples area. During the days of September 27th until September 29th the MBSS Outdoor Education 12 Class embarked on a breath taking adventure. Throughout these few days many skills and experiences were endured. The students who were involved in this quest around the Steeples area found themselves in awe of the beauty that our Earth has to offer. It could have been the adrenaline running throughout their veins or the mountain air around them but a feeling of gratitude and respect for nature was established throughout this escapade. Teamwork, motivation and strength were all prime skills used in
accomplishing this trip. Walking among the vibrant yellow larch trees and admiring the mountain landscapes existing around them must have been one of the most pleasurable aspects while hiking. The young mountaineers powered through illuminating sun rays, cold wind, and steep terrain all while embracing the significant Steeples area. New bonds were formed and memories made along the way. At the end of a long day filled with excitement the adventurers snuggled up around a warm fire to share stories and laugh at each other’s jokes. On the first night an amazing eclipse rose over the mountains and
the stars twinkled like diamonds lighting up the night sky. When it came time to sleep everyone curled up in their tents and shut their eyes and filled their minds and hearts with excitement and hope for the next long day awaiting them all. Waking up in the morning was a struggle at times because who really enjoys rolling out of a warm sleeping bag and breathing in the crisp morning air? Although after a cup of Joe and hot oatmeal life seemed promising and the day began to unfold itself to everyone. Everyone had the opportunity to admire a glacier and also give it a quick lick without getting their tongues stuck to the ice. At moments of fatigue, hiking great distances and terrain seems impossible, but after the completion of such an adventure one realizes the strength that is stored within one’s bones and mind. A sense of sadness arose in the air as it came time to say goodbye to the beautiful area but also a sense of excitement for the next adventure drifted into everyone’s hearts. A strong Thank-you to the mountains, lakes, glaciers, trees, and all the other wonders of nature.

3 Facts You Need To Know About...
the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement 1. Canada is a trading nation. We depend largely on exports for the jobs we have. Prime Minister Harper’s announcement that the TPP Agreement has been signed means Canada will have better access to 40% of the world economy and most of the fast-growing Asian economies. 2. The supply management sector in BC (dairy, eggs, chickens, turkeys) has been protected by the agreement and by creative new programs announced by PM Harper. The new access to Asian economies will provide a significant boost to our forestry, manufacturing, beef, agrifoods, seafood and other industries. 3. If Canada had not signed this agreement, nations like Australia that also supply Asia with metallurgical coal could have sought penalties within the agreement partners against Canada for our met coal exports, a huge blow to the Elk Valley coal industry. The TPP agreement is good for our region.

Work has recently begun on the solar project at College of the Rockies. The project is expected to produce enough power to operate 14 houses for one year. College of the Rockies has begun work on a new solar project at the Cranbrook main campus’ Kootenay Centre building. Kootenay Centre is the main campus’ biggest consumer of electricity and has the best physical space for the solar panels with less shadowing than other campus buildings. The solar photovoltaic panels installed on the building’s roof will allow the College to produce electricity year-round which they will then sell back to BC Hydro.

Jim was a quiet, private man who cherished his friends and acquaintances. Jim served on the executive of Branch #24 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Cranbrook where he was involved on many committees. electricity to operate 14 houses for a year - while reducing the College’s greenhouse gas emissions by 12,000 kilograms of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent). It also provides a teaching tool for College of the Rockies students both during construction and once the system is up and running. “We are able to provide our students with the opportunity to learn and see firsthand how alternative energies work in the construction phase and, once the system is functional, to be able to see how it is performing through our real-time monitoring system,” adds Knibbs. The latest solar project comes on the heels of the installation of two types of solar technology at the College’s residence building, providing a renewable energy source for heating the building. A solar wall was also mounted at the Cranbrook campus’ Pinnacle Hall building which helps to draw heat into the building, improving air quality and reducing heating and operating costs. Knibbs hopes to be able to expand the program to the Cranbrook campus’ Summit Hall building as well as to some of the regional campuses. “The Ministry of Advanced Education has been supportive of our solar initiatives through funding programs and I hope we are able to continue to expand our use of solar technologies throughout our regional campuses as well as here in Cranbrook,” Knibbs concludes. Peter Legge to speak about financial habits at seminar Internationally renowned entrepreneur, speaker, and author Peter Legge will be presenting a two part seminar Wednesday, October 21 as part of Small Business Week in Cranbrook. The two part, two hour, seminar will begin with his acclaimed seminar 27 Success Habits Developing Million Dollar Habits for Success. Mr. Legge will inspire the audience to aspire to emulate the habits of highly successful people. A born storyteller with an entertainer’s wit and sense of timing, Peter will take the audience on an inspirational journey
through 27 simple and easy-to-implement habits that cumulatively have the power to change their lives and fortunes. Chamber Executive Director David D. Hull is thrilled to have Mr. Legge come to Cranbrook. “Peter is extremely busy and in demand. We are so fortunate he has found time to visit Cranbrook. I have heard him speak many times and have at least eight of his books. He is an inspiration and a real life BC success story.” The second half of the two hour presentation Peter will be doing a motivational presentation titled: Thinking, is it a Lost
Art? Mr. Legge will base this portion of the seminar on the postulation, “Our thoughts and our thinking have a major effect on our lives and the success we seek.” He will explore and answer the age old question “Why do only five percent of us achieve the success we are looking for?” The seminar at the Heritage Hotel and Conference Centre is a member only event. “Chamber membership has its privileges,” said Hull, “and to attend a Peter Legge seminar is a huge one. BC Hydro today announced plans to upgrade a key substation in Fernie. The existing Fernie Substation is aging and reaching capacity. BC Hydro must upgrade the facility to meet growing electricity demand in Fernie and the surrounding area to provide clean reliable power to homes and businesses. “Low-cost, reliable, clean electricity is one of British Columbia’s key advantages – it means we can attract investment, grow our
economy and have a better quality of life. This investment in upgrades to the Fernie Substation will help ensure we can meet future demand for reliable power in the Southeast, benefitting residents, businesses and industry,” said Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines. The project includes: • replacing one of the existing transformers with a larger capacity transformer, • the addition of new circuit breakers and 25 kilovolt feeders,
2015 Jeep Renegade
• modernizing the switchyard and protection and control equipment • expansion of the substation site, and • replacement of existing wood poles with steel structures. “Demand for electricity is growing as B.C.’s population and economy grow. At the same time, our electricity system is getting older. That’s why we are investing, on average, $2.4 billion a year over the next 10 years on our infrastructure. Increasing capacity at Fernie Substation will ensure BC Hydro customers in Fernie and surrounding area continue to enjoy clean reliable power now and into the future,”
said Chris O’Riley, Deputy CEO & Capital Infrastructure Project Delivery, BC Hydro. Following several months of discussion and consultation with the City of Fernie, including review of the proposed substation design & aesthetics and approval by the Design Review Panel committee, BC Hydro will also enhance the visual appearance of the newly upgraded facility with landscaping and architecture accents consistent with Fernie’s downtown heritage theme. “I’m pleased to see this investment in key infrastructure in our city. Over the next 20 years Fernie is expect-

Gregarious Gardener 10 neat things..apples 1. Opulence in Ancient Rome. People have been eating apples as far back as 6,500 BC. In ancient Greece and Rome, apples were considered a luxury fruit and sign of opulence. There is even Pomona, the Roman goddess of apples. 2. Apples of the Crimean. Apples are believed to originate in the region of modern day Kazakhstan, between the Crimean Sea and the Black Sea. There are over 8,000 varieties of apples worldwide, with more than 2,500 of them grown in North America. The only type of apple native to Canada? The crabapple. 3. Apples through the Ages. Many legends and traditions are tied to apples, from the fruit Eve used to tempt Adam with in paradise to Newton’s discovery of the law of gravity when watching a falling apple. Apples are the most widely consumed fruit with 65 apples eaten by an average person per year. China, the US and Turkey are the world’s top apple producers. Canada’s national apple is the McIntosh. 4. An Apple a Day… Keeps the doctor away. An apple before bed will make the doctor beg his bread. We all know apples are good for you. One of their main

nutritional benefits is the large amount of fibre. Apples are also one of the best sources of the mineral boron, which may promote bone health. They are fat-, sodium- and cholesterol-free and a medium sized apple has about 80 calories. 5. Glorious Blooms. Like many other edible fruits, apples are members of the rose family. This explains the tree’s fragrant apple blossoms in the spring, made up of masses of showy flowers with five equal petals arranged around a central cup bearing a fruit-forming pistils. 6. Size Matters. Apples come in a large range of sizes from the tiniest crabapples, slightly larger than a cherry, to the largest varieties that are the size of a grapefruit. The largest apple ever recorded weighed in at three pounds and two ounces. A medium apple, a six ounce glass of pure apple juice or half a cup of applesauce are considered one serving. 7. A Tree for Every Yard. Wish you could have an apple orchard in your backyard? There are many varieties of apples that are hardy in our region and if space is a challenge, consider planting a hedge of dwarf trees or an apple espalier. Apple trees will usually bear fruit after five years. Most apples do not pollinate themselves or any flowers of the same
variety; this means you need to plant at least two different apple tree varieties close to one another so that the bees can pollinate. 8. Like Raw Eggs. The best way of harvesting apples is the “rolling method”. the apple is gently turned upside down on the spur - the little part that connects the apple’s stem to the branch. If the apple is ready to pick, it usually comes off quite easily and without disturbing other fruit. Make sure to place apples gently into a basket, or container; jostling or fruit hitting one another can cause bruising. 9. Smelly Apples. Late-season apples are usually best for storing. Apples ripen six to ten times faster at room temperature than if they are kept in the fridge or a cold room. Properly stored, apples can have a shelf life of 90 days or more. Keeping them away from any strong-smelling foods prevents them from absorbing unpleasant odours. 10. A Flood of Apples. Juicing is a great way of processing apples, especially if you have a lot of them. It takes about 36 apples to make one gallon of apple cider. Freshly pressed apple juice will turn brown as it makes contact with the air. To prevent this oxidation, you can add a few squeezes of lemon or lime juice.

ed to continue to grow, and more people mean more homes and businesses needing power. Electricity is vital to not only our dayto-day lives, but our continued economic growth,” said Mayor Mary Giuliano, City of Fernie. BC Hydro has attended several meetings with the City of Fernie to provide information about the project, answer their questions and receive input. Opportunities for the public to learn more about the project will be scheduled and advertised in 2016. BC Hydro is currently finalizing the substation design. Initial work to prepare the site will begin in the fall of 2016 with construction starting in the spring of 2017. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
CBT reports revenues to increase The Columbia Basin Trust is expecting to nearly double its revenues in the next few years. The increase comes as the result of the CBT’s investment in a number of power projects. The Waneta Expansion Project is coming online and the CBT has also renewed a power purchase agreement for the Arrow Lakes dam with BC Hydro. “In the next couple of years we’ll be increasing our revenues to about $55 million, for the foreseeable future, per year,” said Delphi Hoodicoff, director of communications for the CBT. Power purchase agreements for the CBT’s power projects are longterm, so the trust can be reasonably certain of its revenues for the next few years. In response to the expected increase in revenue, CBT approached communities about how the trust could better its services. The result of that community engagement is the Renewed Strategic Priorities document, which the trust released this week. One of the trust’s see CBT page 20

Dedicated to a Cure, in the Name of Love. Experts agree that early detection of breast cancer saves lives. Screening tests can help diagnose breast cancer in its early stages, when it’s most treatable. Doctors recommend a clinical breast exam
every three years beginning at age 20, and a mammogram every year starting at age 40. Breast self-exams and healthy lifestyle choices that include exercise, good nutrition and not smoking can also help protect women against the threat of breast cancer. During October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we remember the mothers, daughters, friends, sisters and wives who have lost their lives to breast cancer. We also salute the survivors whose successful fight against breast cancer gives us hope for the future and a cure.

Kootenay News Advertiser Wednesday, October 14, 2015 cotton yarn or bamboo or silk yarn. Most of the knitters prefer to donate the yarn as well as their time.” Over the summer, the Knitter Knockers group has made about 34 pairs of various sizes and has partnered with the Canadian Cancer Society, who will distribute them to interested women through their Resource Room in their office. According to Lynnette Wray, Team Lead with the Canadian Cancer Society Financial Support Program, “we sincerely appreciate the Telus Ambassadors’ work on the Knitted Knockers. This is an excellent addition to our existing support programs, which include a Financial Support Program to assist with a portion of travel and accommodations costs to attend treatment, our ‘home away from home’ Lodges in Kelowna, Vancouver, Prince George and Victoria, our CancerConnection peer support program, and our Cancer Information Service.” Wray encourages patients or caregivers to visit www.cancer.ca for further information about Canadian Cancer Society support programs. Wray added, “I also want to thank Val Paolini from the Oncology Unit at the EKRH for sharing
our support programs information with chemotherapy patients.” The Resource Room at the Cranbrook Office, located at #19 – 9th Ave S, Cranbrook, has wigs, head coverings (hats, toques, scarves, turbans, caps), underarm pillows, Knitted Knockers, temporary ‘puffy’ breast prosthetics, books, videos, brochures and other resources for people dealing with cancer and going through treatment. All of these resources are available without cost to cancer patients and their families. The Canadian Cancer Society would like to thank all the knitters, stuffers and wrappers for all their hard work and for the Telus Community Ambassadors for coming to the Society with this partnership opportunity and spearheading this project. Since 2007, the TELUS Community Ambassadors have assembled, knitted, sewn and donated nearly 500,000 care items across Canada to help out those in need. In Cranbrook, and province-wide, the Telus Community Ambassadors also make Baby Bags - care bundles for babies born to families in need.
