‘2015 Federal Election’

MURRAY, Mike

Chose not to participate - No response

How the questions were presented On Sept. 28, each candidate was provided with the 20 questions listed above the table, along with these instructions:

Dear candidates, TIMES readers have told us that it is important to them to have a straight-forward reference to help them orient themselves within the range of candidate choices open to them. To that end, we would ask that you provide a ‘yes’, ‘no’ or ‘don’t know’ response to EACH of the questions (except for the un-numbered questions about local residence and party membership). NOTE: Any responses left blank or answered with anything other than ‘yes,’ ‘no’ or ‘don’t know’ will be left blank. Candidates can give expanded answers to ALL of the questions (to a maximum of 250 words). However, only three expanded answers per candidate will be published in the paper due to space limitations; please indicate clearly which three answers you want to see in print. Please note that all expanded answers will be published online. Please return your answers via email by noon on Thursday, OCT. 8! See candidate profiles, A7, A11, A12, and A26

1. Is it the responsibility of the government to ensure every Canadian has a home or a bed to sleep in? Yes, but indirectly by means of providing safety nets for those in need, empowering Canadians to be productive members of society to ensure basic necessity of civil life. The Green Party will introduce GLI Guarantee Livable Income, housing strategy to retrofit marginal and unlivable spaces and strengthen the co-op and non-profit housing framework, and work with the Peter Tam province and municipality to provide affordable housing in major centres.

2. Should Canada implement a federal carbon tax? Yes. Fees and dividends that take money from the polluters and give it back to Canadians.

17. Should the government spend more to stimulate the economy? Yes, but try to do it without going into deficit by allocating existing money and increasing revenue: by allocating one per cent of GST directly back to municipalities to upgrade infrastructure, by investing in clean technology, by making old buildings more energy efficient, and by slightly increasing wealthy corporate tax to 19 per cent and lowering small business tax. • See candidate profile on page A12…

8. Will Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows businesses benefit from Canada joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership? No. These pacts are not simply trade deals. They are attacks on our democracy, negotiated in secret by large corporations with a thin cover of compliant government involvement. Their goal is to reduce the ability of countries to pass laws to protect their own citizens. They all contain Investor-State Dispute Mechanisms. These give foreign corporations the power to prevent any new laws, which might impact future profits. In 2013, China bought Nexen, a uniquely polluting tar sands operator. It is the only one that burns the leftover sand, which still contains some tar residue, in order to boil tar out of the next batch. In 2014, Canada signed the 30-year Chinese Foreign Investor Protection Agreement. If Canada wants to pass a law to reduce Nexen’s pollution, an international tribunal of corporate lawyers, deliberating in secret, will decide what compensation Canada would owe the Chinese corporation. It could be billions. Steve Ranta The same problem faces new legislation to protect Canadian jobs, improve safety regulations, support our own industries, regulate drug prices, tax real estate speculation, expand public health care, protect privacy and internet freedom, and regulate financial transactions. The opposition rarely even mentions these issues, and if they do, it’s always conveniently too late to have any effect on negotiations. We need to cancel the TPP, and the Chinese FIPA, and refuse to sign any more agreements containing ISDMs. If you’re concerned, your best choice is to elect an independent MP who will keep you informed and defend your democratic rights.

12. Do you support a change from first-past-the-post elections to a proportional-representation system? Yes. Our current system suffers from the fundamental dysfunction that it is controlled by parties that are not accountable to us. > continued page A4…

The combination of an adversarial Parliamentary debate system, and a mass media interested mainly in sound bites and dramatic posturing, distracts parties and the public away from insisting on wise consideration of longterm, fundamental issues. Last fall, while the opposition leader persisted in probing the Duffy affair, the 30-year Chinese Foreign Investment Protection Agreement was foisted on Canadians with no significant opposition, and without most of us even noticing. Unlike in other countries, the TPP, which was negotiated over a decade, was just now brought to public attention in the late stages of this campaign – when only the most superficial aspects have time to be examined. Other basic facts, like average wages falling $4/hour behind productivity gains, or Canadian corporations sitting on $600 billion in unproductive cash, are kept outside of political discourse.

Even on issues where Canadians are adamant, our political system is unresponsive. Strong majorities of Canadians want significant improvements to our public health care system, environmental protections, and a more egalitarian and caring society, but governments haven’t delivered. Until we achieve proportional representation, your best choice is to vote independent.

14. Should the federal government invest more in health care? Yes. Every election, health care tops the list of concerns for Canadian voters. Unfortunately, the major parties seem comfortable with limiting debate to emerging hot-button issues, and offering short term, Band-Aid solutions, rather than offering real improvements and solutions to the underlying problems. When Tommy Douglas was planning public health care for Saskatchewan, his experts designed a complete system. Political considerations reduced

the plan to basic hospital and doctor services. At the time, this was a major advance, but more than half a century has passed by, with little improvement. Canada has fallen far behind most other advanced countries, which provide a wide range of public health services, including free pharmaceuticals, dental, mental health, transportation, wellness and prevention, home care, and long-term care. More federal investment in our public health care system is vitally necessary, but we also need to study and implement what other countries are doing, and stop buying into the myth that our identity as Canadians is tied to a 50-year-old health care system. We must also realize that the major parties have failed to serve Canadians on this issue. Electing a strong, independent MP is the best way to provide an effective advocate who will work hard towards providing the complete public health care system that Canadians deserve. • See candidate profile on page A26…

FEDERAL ELECTION

Meeting the candidate: Tories’ own Mike Murray A former minister is vying for a seat in Parliament this fall. COLE WAGNER cole.wagner@mrtimes.com

When his mentor, MP Randy Kamp, announced that he would not seek re-election earlier this year, Mike Murray realized what kind of opportunity was in front of him. Decades earlier, one Grant McNally – then the Progressive Conservative (former Reform turned Canadian Alliance party) MP for what was the riding of DewdneyAlouette – signalled that his run in the House of Commons was over. Then-executive assistant Randy Kamp took up the post in McNally’s stead, and served three consecutive terms in the riding, which would become Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows-Mission, and now Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge. Fast forward to 2015, and with Kamp retiring, Murray – Kamp’s executive assistant – rose to the challenge of taking up Kamp’s mantle as the Conservative candidate in the riding. But while Murray had been working with Kamp since joining the Conservatives in 2011, he hasn’t spent his adult life twiddling his thumbs waiting for an opportunity to run. Before entering the political scene, Murray was a church minister who spent time four years in the United States and four more years in the U.K. “Most of my adult life, my emphasis has been on living for others,” he explained. “And I believe politics can be that way,

Cole Wagner/TIMES

Mike Murray, the Conservative candidate, made a speech at Meadowridge School on Oct. 5. too.” Murray returned to Canada in 2004, when he moved to Pitt Meadows. Shortly thereafter, he co-founded the Riverside Calvary Church in Langley, and served as the church’s pastor for a number of years. But even as a minister, politics was always a passion for Murray. “I’ve always enjoyed the political realm – I’ve paid attention to it. I was involved

when I was a teenager in Richmond. I was youth president for the Progressive Conservatives when I was 19,” Murray recounted. “That was an interesting time,” he laughed. For Murray, the link between politics and being a minister is simple: people. He tells the story of when he first began working for Kamp – and the MP asked Murray one question on his first day:

“Do you care about people?” “To me, that was commendable. It wasn’t ‘Are you dedicated to this policy or that policy,’ and Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge a lot of people don’t see that. That wasn’t what he talked votes about – partisan stuff – he talked FEDERAL ELECTION 2015 about caring for people,” Murray recalled. But while the two share the same passion for people, Murray admits there are some differences between himself, and Kamp. “Randy is a much more mellow person, quieter. I’m maybe not as much that way, so I think I’ve learned that from him,” Murray said. One thing that hasn’t changed from a Conservative standpoint, is their message to voters – as Murray put it – “protect our economy, and because it’s an election, vote Conservative.” And Murray said he’s been hard at work trying to get that message into voters’ minds, knocking on doors and canvassing neighbourhoods during the past month and a half. “If your government doesn’t balance its budget – and listen, if you don’t balance your budget at home, you know the stress of living through that, it’s not easy,” he explained. “So if your political leaders aren’t managing the finances in a prudent way, that allows people to lose their confidence in small businesses and job creation, people spending their money… it affects everything.”

hen democracy has been established long enough, it’s natural to grow somewhat jaded with the process. Some of us do remain excited, or at least highly interested in the process as we get closer to election day. We pore over the party platforms, watch the debates, follow the coverage of gaffes and sound bites. But we must admit, we’re in the minority. And even a hardened political enthusiast can get tired of it all, especially with a campaign that’s stretched from the heat of summer into the middle of autumn. So we aren’t asking for enthusiasm and joy. But we are asking people to vote. Voting is an interesting duty. Unlike paying your taxes or jury duty, it is completely voluntary. Yet it is one of the most important duties of citizens in a functioning democracy. Our country would grind to a halt pretty quickly if everyone cheated on their taxes. But we can sustain lower and lower voter turnouts, down towards about half of the total electorate, for decades at a stretch. And yet, we can’t help but think that lower voter turnout is both a cause and effect of problems in Canadian democracy. In Canada, we have a country that functions about as well as any other on Earth. It’s one of the best places to live even among wealthy, democratic nations. It is still far from perfect. Ask anyone and you will get a laundry list of things that could be better in Canada, things that could be improved, things that should be done away with. Many people, however, don’t think voting will do anything to repair these problems. It’s true that voting is not the beginning and end of democracy. Advocacy and lobbying and pestering and protesting and even civil disobedience are sometimes necessary to grease the wheels of progress. But voting may accomplish something. Not voting definitely accomplishes nothing. So vote for a party or against one, for a candidate you love or against one you hate, but on Oct. 19 get out and vote.

I don’t believe that he’s “just not ready yet.” And anyway, his supposed lack of experience won’t destroy this country. But if you’re expecting him to be the reincarnation of his famous daddy – who, like him or not, has been marked by history as one of our great prime ministers – I think you’re going to be disappointed. I’ve made it pretty clear on any number of occasions that I am not a Harper fan. But face it, folks, if he’s the poorest player at the table, Canada still has a great game going. I do believe his position on Islamic women’s choices to wear niqabs in this country is motivated by his need to cater to a racist core within his political support group. And he does appeal to that core group by suggesting that only he can protect us from the Muslim bogeymen that we are to believe have infiltrated the peace and contentment that is the natural entitlement of all non-Muslim Canadians. It saddens me that the ploy seems to appeal to a significant number of my

fellow citizens. To me, that whole manufactured furor is more objectionable than tar sands and pipelines, his general anti-science stance, his unwillingness to talk candidly about his vision for Canada, or his apparent lack of understanding of the current economic reality. While many of us may perceive his attitude as damaging to the basic concept of Canadian values, the reality is that our choices – the precipitate of all Canadians’ choices on Election Day – will determine what our Canadian values really are. That goes for Trudeau and Mulcair as much as it does for Harper. Whether it pleases you or not, we are the authors of our own destiny. All it takes to have a hand in writing that story is to pick up a pencil and mark your ballot, whether it was at the advance polls, or this coming voting day on Monday, Oct. 19. And for that, I am truly thankful. Read Matthew Claxton’s Painful Truth online this week at mrtimes.com

They are an eye sore.” – Kimberly Richmond “I think it’s funny that some folks think this vandalism is a reflection of any of the parties in this election. All this reflects is an individual’s disrespect for private property and inability to articulate their dislike for the Conservatives. That’s it. I hope they catch the person. Leave dirty politics to the actual politicians.” – Aaron S. Davis

Mulcair seems to be taking his cue from the NDP’s history. NDP Premiers in Saskatchewan and Manitoba balanced their budgets year after year. It’s a cautious approach, well suited to the times we live in. It reflects an understanding that we can’t fix everything overnight. For me, the choice is clear. A vote for the NDP is a vote for measured, proven leadership by someone who understands the problems facing Canadians. Elizabeth J. Rosenau, Maple Ridge

Vote for change

Dear Editor, During this election Stephen Harper has not brought up climate change but is selling us the economy spin. Harper’s reluctance to address the missing Aboriginal women and his lack of compassion in the Syrian Refugee crisis illustrates his failure as a leader. For the first time in my life under Harper’s rule I feel ashamed to be a Canadian. I want to be proud of a leader that I can respect. Please vote for change – there are three positive choices: Green, Liberal and NDP. Rolf Raque Maple Ridge

Money can’t buy election promises Dear Editor, After a recent all candidates meeting, I came away with an image of a giant hopper, catching the endless stream of money falling from the sky, followed by a never ending line of trucks being filled up out of that hopper with an army of civil servants on board, ready to shovel that money off the back of those trucks in all directions. Affordable housing, bring on the trucks; youth programs, homelessness, medical services, especially the mentally disadvantaged, education, aboriginal affairs, free university education – all those and more. But throughout the three hours of debate, not once was there any mention of personal responsibility, none! And while it is commendable that Justin Trudeau admires his dad, he ignores the fact that Pierre Elliot Trudeau saddled us with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, without including even a hint of personal responsibility, to the benefit of no one except the lawyers, those that know how to milk the system and an ever-growing horde of civil servants. Have we forgotten that we already had a very workable Canadian Bill of Rights and Freedoms, introduced by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker? My wish is that we can repeal that onerous Charter of P.E.T. (Trudeau) and instead teach each other how to handle our affairs in a responsible way, just as we do within our households, if we have a well balanced family life. Walter Verwoerd, Maple Ridge

RIDGE MEADOWS HOSPITAL

Gala proves popular TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Maybe it’s the unique theme, or the cause, but tickets sales were brisk to say the least for the Arabian Nights gala benefiting the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. Laura Butler from the foundation said all 36 tables are full for this year’s gala, happening this Saturday, Oct. 17 at Meadows Gardens Golf Club. The gala is in its 27th year and this year features a belly dancing troupe. Returning attendees usually have it circled on their calendar, Butler noted. Each year, the goal is to use funds raised from the gala for better patient care, faster diagnosis, and effective treatment for all patients at Ridge Meadows Hospital, ranging from the tiniest newborns to seniors. Butler said the cause “really resonates with people. “Everybody in the community has a connection in some way, shape, or form to the hospital, she said. “People have a great night, having fun and supporting the cause. They mark it on calendar and go every year. > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Arabian Nights’

Time capsule book rekindles memories A Pitt Meadows couple received a priceless gift from Davie Jones Elementary. TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@mrtimes.com

A booklet with the neatly printed words of a nine-year-old boy, accompanied by his colourful illustrations, sat buried in Pitt Meadows soil for a quarter of a century. And when staff at Davie Jones Elementary unearthed it as part of the school’s 25-year-old time capsule this past spring, the booklet became a treasure for Terry and Gay Conn and their family. The booklet was written and illustrated by Terry and Gay’s then nine-year-old son Clay, who drowned in

a cliff jumping accident at Elbow Lake in 2001. Clay was 20 years old. Eleven years before his death, Clay shared his idea of a perfect day: sleeping in really late, playing Sega, making waffles with his mom, changing into his favourite clothes (sweatpants and black t-shirt), eating candy all day with his friend Ben, having tacos for dinner, taking his mom to the movies (she would see Driving Miss Daisy, while he and another friend were in another theatre watching Ernest Goes to Jail). FEDERAL ELECTION

Meeting the candidate: New Democrat Party’s Bob D’Eith The NDP candidate anticipates change, and wants to be a part of it. COLE WAGNER cole.wagner@mrtimes.com

Bob D’Eith is a man who has worn many hats throughout his career – as a touring musician, entertainment lawyer, hockey coach, author, and CEO of Music BC. But the father of five is ready and willing to add one more title to his resume: Member of Parliament. D’Eith is the NDP’s candidate in Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge for the upcoming federal election, having earned the nod from the local New Democratic Party riding association earlier in the year. Politics is only the most recent pursuit for the eclectic D’Eith, who started the touring band Rhymes with Orange, in the late 1980s, and was nominated for two Junos. “After university, I felt like I really wanted to be in music, but at the same time I was starting my law practice,” D’Eith told The TIMES. “It was a really interesting dual career,” he added. Future voters practise casting ballots

TROY LANDREVILLE

Call it a dress rehearsal for those who will one day help shape the vision of Canada. A mock election for children and youth too young to vote was held Tuesday at Maple Ridge Community Church. Ridge Meadows Home Learners, with help from Heritage Christian Online School, hosted a six-week

co-op focusing on the Canadian government and the election process. The lessons culminated with the mock election. The younger voters in Grades 3 to 6 cast their ballots for candidates from parties they created. Meanwhile, senior students (Grades 4 to11) voted on real candidates in the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge riding. Leading up to their “election,” the students visited

with local candidates on different occasions, including Mike Murray (Conservative), Peter Tam (Green), Bob D’Eith (NDP), and Dan Ruimy (Liberals), who fielded questions from the students on different issues and party platforms. The independent candidate, Steve Ranta, was invited. He was unable to attend. > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘future voters’

FEDERAL ELECTION

Meeting the candidate: Green’s Peter Tam TUESDAY

Fire destroys empty house Crews battled a tricky blaze in Maple Ridge. ERIC ZIMMER ezimmer@mrtimes.com

A Tuesday fire, which destroyed a central Maple Ridge home, is being called suspicious, according to Maple Ridge fire chief Dane Spence. ‘We don’t know what started the fire,” he said, but noted the 124th Avenue house (near Merkley Park) stood vacant for a number of years. “We suspect it was a set fire,’ Spence said. “It was a very, very old house,” he added. “There was no drywall in it, and there were a lot of concealed spaces.” Other challenges to fighting the blaze presented themselves too, the fire chief explained. The age, and the condition of the house, as well as the “amount of fire” made it impossible for crews to go inside, Spence said. “We couldn’t go inside the building and it all had to be done from the exterior.”

Candidate believes a few Green MPs can hold the balance of power in Ottawa. Green Party candidate Peter Tam aims to improve on the election results from 2011, when he finished fourth in the federal election.

COLE WAGNER cole.wagner@mrtimes.com

If Peter Tam had his way, there would be some major changes to the way Canada works. No income tax for those making less than $20,000 a year, free post-secondary education for all Canadians, and a Guaranteed Liveable Income (GLI) that would provide no-strings-attached cash to every Canadian in order for them to have a certain standard of living. Tam would be the first to admit that these are ambitious, long-term plans – but he still believes there is plenty of shortterm gain in electing a Green Party representative as the local Member of Parliament. “It doesn’t matter who we vote for, things don’t get changed, you keep hearing the same thing: ‘Politicians lie and everything is so bad’,” explained Tam. “It doesn’t have to be. We believe there are ways that you can put the respect back in Parliament, being more civil. Because that’s the only way to get things done – politicians are not supposed to be there to just attack each other – you’re supposed to be there to do things for Canadians.” This is Tam’s second time run-

ning in a federal election – he also represented the Green Party in 2011, finishing with almost 2,000 votes – but overall in fourth place. But Tam, a resident of Maple Ridge for more than a 15 years, believes that the 2015 election could have a very different outcome. “A few Green MPs in a minority Parliament could control the balance of power,” he explained. Indeed, assuming none of the major parties surpass the magic 170-seat majority marker on Oct. 19, the party which controls the most seats will be forced to court support from MPs across the aisle. Factor in that the Green Party, as a party policy, never whips its MPs (as in forcing them to vote a certain way on a given bill), and there is real potential for a Green candidate to have a powerful influence in

‘Undead’ will swarm Valley Fair The Oct. 23 Zombie Walk will scare up food for the Friends In Need Food Bank. TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Z

ombie Walks seem to be all the rage these days and for Jenny Dumont, Maple Ridge’s annual shamble from Valley Fair Mall to the downtown Dairy Queen is fun for her whole family. Through the magic of makeup (which she self-applies, Dumont and her three kids gleefully mutate into the undead – and will join other ghouls at Maple Ridge’s third annual Zombie Walk, benefiting the Friends In Need Food Bank. “I do the costumes and makeup myself,” Dumont said. “We have participated in the walk since the first one three years ago. It’s a great event the city puts on. Everyone seems to enjoy it.” For this year’s walk, on Friday, Oct. 23, the swarm of groaning zombies will begin dragging their feet (a popular sort of gait for soulless corpses) starting at 4 p.m. at Valley Fair Mall, making their way down to the Dairy Queen at 22490 Lougheed Hwy.

H

osted by the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association (DMRBIA), the ghoulish festivities start early, with theatrical facepainting by the Emerald Pig Theatrical Society, a haunted house, giveaways and more starting at 1 p.m. at the mall. Dumont said she and her family get involved in Maple Ridge’s walk each year because it’s so close to home and the swarms aren’t as large as they are at Vancouver’s annual shamble. Allison Marshall is another local mom who is looking forward to getting a “taste” of this year’s “food-raiser.” “Last year, my then six-yearold and I teamed up with some friends and got all bloody, and walked the streets of Maple Ridge,” Marshall said. “It was a blast. This year, we are doing the same, but with more people.” Marshall also takes part in the Vancouver walk and says it’s “nice to see our town participate in such a thing.” This event is free for zombies of all ages, but walkers

are encouraged to bring nonperishable food donations for Friends In Need. ast year, more than 250 zombies lurched, crawled, and stumbled through the downtown core, all vying for one of three prizes. This year, the DMRBIA will award prizes for scariest zombie, funniest zombie, and best zombie walk. When they arrive at their final destination, all the zombies will receive a treat at Dairy Queen. The event is designed as a way to increase traffic into Maple Ridge’s downtown core and “presents a unique opportunity for our BIA members to showcase their businesses,” said DMRBIA membership and events coordinator Michelle Zazulak. “We are encouraging groups to enter a zombie team that will provide a unique level of exposure,” Zazulak added. “For example, if a local restaurant wants to enter a team of zombie chefs or maybe a local dance group can put together a troupe of zombie ballerinas, they can hand out coupons or business cards.” For details, visit downtownmapleridge.ca, or Facebook. com/ShopMapleRidge.

Whether the Ridge Meadows Flames are catching fire, or if their recent run of success that has seen Maple Ridge’s junior Bs win two of the past three games is just a hot spot, remains to be seen. Flames head coach and general manager Jamie Fiset will take it, as his team inches towards the .500 mark. “We’re very happy, that we played three games in four days and we picked up four out of six points,â€? Maple Ridge golfer Connor O’Dell has been named as one to watch at the PING CCAA Golf national championships, hosted by University of the Fraser Valley, and taking place until tomorrow, at the Chilliwack Golf Club. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. each day.

For more than a century, B.C. has been noted as being home to some of the world’s greatest fisheries, notably for trout, writes columnist Jeff Weltz.

Local Ride Racing’s annual Pumpkin Cross is getting set to return for another year, on Sunday, Nov. 1. The event will be held at the North Alouette River Greenway. Entering its ninth season, the Pumpkin Cross has grown to be one of B.C.’s cyclo-cross races. Registration for the event is now open.

Canada Revenue Agency Telephone Scams The Canada Revenue Agency is noting an increase in telephone scams where the caller claims to be from the CRA but is not. The caller requests immediate payment via some pretty unofficial means (prepaid credit cards, or money transfers via Western Union, MoneyGram or even your banks E-transfers), and threatens the taxpayer with police showing up at their door with a warrant for their arrest. More sophisticated callers disguise their phone numbers, often using local numbers to make it even more compelling. If you get such a call, hang up and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Visit antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca. Halloween Safety Tips:

• Bring a flashlight; • Do not go inside houses and do not get into vehicles; • Only visit houses that are lit; • Stay away from animals you are not familiar with; and • Vandalism is not just a ‘trick’ it is against the law and has consequences.

Debunking eight common myths about pet surgery

DR. MICHAEL ORSER

W

hen a pet needs surgery for any reasons, veterinarians often hear all kinds of myths that owners may have heard or read on the Internet. Hopefully this will help to clarify those misconceptions. 1. “My dog is too old for surgery.” Age is not really a factor in determining if a pet can have anaesthetic and surgery. A thorough physical exam and pre-anesthetic-blood test can help assess if there is any risk. Older pets undergo surgery all the time without complications as long as they are in good health. 2. “Surgery is painful.”

While some surgeries can be painful procedures, we are fortunate to have a wide variety of medications to control pain quite easily. In many cases the pet may be already living in pain prior to the surgery which may alleviate some of this. 3. “There is no point if there is no cure.” Although this often relates to removing cancerous tumors, a biopsy may be needed to determine if the growth is malignant or not. Even if it is cancerous many of these can be completely removed and allow for good quality of life for years. 4. “My dog will not survive confinement.” Confinement may be required after a surgical procedure to allow things to heal properly. Outdoor dogs may need to be recovering under supervision and on a leash, but most owners find that resting them is far easier than they thought it would be. 5. “I can’t keep a plastic cone on my dog.” Not all pets will need to wear a cone but if

medications given. There is pet insurance to avoid this financial dilemma. 7. “I can just use medication, instead.” Certainly medication has its place, but it is not fair for some pets to live on a medication for a problem that could be cured with a surgical procedure. Meds may just address the signs of the disease without

addressing the cause. 8. “Things will get better by themselves.” You may not be able to tell if your pet is vomiting, for instance, for some benign reason such as eating too much, or, in fact does have a foreign object in it that needs surgical removal. Don’t procrastinate if your pet is sick as waiting too long may have devastating con-

sequences. If your pet needs surgery be sure to ask your veterinarian: what are the goals of surgery, what will happen without surgery, and how will I keep my pet comfortable after surgery? Your veterinarian will address your concerns.

BENSLEY is a 7 year old boy with super soft fur and a short tail, who came to us due to litter box issues. Bensley had a lot of stress in his old home, and this is probably what cause the inappropriate peeing. Bensley is not a fan of dogs but enjoys feline company. Bensely is a loving boy who is more than happy to snuggle, but is also ok with being left alone if you need a break. Bensley has been with us for over two years. This sweet guy sits quietly and waits for someone to fall in love with him as we have.

Dan Ruimy spoke at the Whonnock all-candidates meeting on Oct 1. Though he couldn’t sympathize with the boy, Ruimy said he understood that frustration with the government had reached an all-time boiling point. And with the local Liberal riding association meeting weekly in his bookstore, Ruimy didn’t have to look far to find a party whose vision he could support. “Justin Trudeau is making it

easy for me,” said Ruimy. “What he’s saying, what he’s doing, in my mind, is the right thing for this country.” Our country is not what it used to be, continued Ruimy, warning that dire consequences await the young and the old alike if the country continues down its current path of government. “What is the point of running

balanced budgets if your citizens are suffering?” asked Ruimy. He pointed to the impending expiry date for government rent subsidies, which go towards housing co-ops and social housing. “A lot of those contracts are coming to an end in 2020,” he said. “The government needs to make money available to those groups in order for them to feel safe and secure, and to continue paying their rents.” And though they might not be old enough to cast a vote in this election, Ruimy also feels that the plight of Canada’s youth is being ignored. “There’s a 15-year-old, who sits down there and says ‘I don’t see a future for myself, so I’m going to live for today, whatever makes me happy today,’” said Ruimy. “And that could be drugs, alcohol, addiction, that’s the start of it. Nobody is giving them opportunity... Instead of being future doctors, lawyers, educators, those are future homeless people.” For Ruimy, the answer to these problems is to elect an effective leader – in his words; “Someone who surrounds himself with people who are more knowledgeable than him in any business and uses their strengths overall as a group to make things better.” And it’s why he’s running for the Liberal party. “It’s the right thing to do.”

FEDERAL ELECTION

Meeting the candidate: Steve Ranta goes it alone The longtime Maple Ridge teacher is the only independent in the race. COLE WAGNER cole.wagner@mrtimes.com

Steve Ranta’s manner of speaking has a tendency to catch you off guard. It’s slower than you might expect, especially for someone with so much to say. Ranta speaks deliberately, with a distinctively low tone – sometimes pausing for dramatic effect. It’s a voice that makes him easy to pick out of a crowd – which works well for Ranta, who is running in the federal election as the riding’s only independent candidate. But his vocal cadence isn’t the only thing that separates Ranta from the other candidates. He also believes that the major parties are downplaying issues which should be brought to the forefront of public discussion. “I really felt that if there’s no real good choice to vote for, I feel it’s a responsibility of citizens to give people a chance to vote for someone who will give them an informed choice,” Ranta explained. Ranta, who first moved to Maple Ridge in the early ’60s as a young boy, has deep roots in the riding. He attended Mount Crescent
