Rural voters face long drive Stave Falls residents receive voter cards directing them to cast ballots in Hatzic Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
Voters in the Stave Falls area are upset about being instructed to vote on the opposite end of the district – a trip they say will take more than half an hour and see them pass several other polling stations along the way. When she received her voting card in the mail, Powell Street resident Darlene Schopman said she was surprised to see
her poll location listed at Hatzic Prairie Hall, on the very opposite end of the District of Mission. Schopman’s rural neighbourhood sits just east of the boundary between the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge electoral district and the newly created Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon riding. Last year, Schopman voted just down Dewdney Trunk Road at the Whonnock Scouts Hall, but with the creation of the new riding, poll locations left Stave Falls residents without a convenient place to
cast their ballots. “There are a lot of people fuming about it,” she said. Schopman called Elections Canada and, because she has a son with a disability, was able to get transferred to a polling station at the much-closer Silverdale elementary. But she worries the distant polling station will stop others from voting. “It’s making it more difficult for some people, who are borderline voters.” Adding to the aggravation is that en route
to their mandated voting location, residents could pass several other polling stations, many within a 20-minute drive. Schopman said she’s learned that residents on nearby Carr Street can vote at Silverdale. Elektra Jordan, Schopman’s neighbour, also received a voter card sending her to Hatzic Prairie Hall. Upon receiving her card, she called Elections Canada to inquire about the decision-making Continued on A3

How to vote on Oct. 19 Voters will head to the polls Monday to pick a Member of Parliament to represent them in the newly created Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon electoral area. The riding encompasses the entirety of Mission, along with a portion of Abbotsford. It also includes area north of the Fraser River, and the Fraser Canyon north to Lillooet. Mission was previously part of the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission riding. Six candidates are running: Dennis Adamson of the NDP, Arthur Green of the Green Party, Liberal Jati Sidhu, Conservative Brad Vis, Elaine Wismer of the Marxist-Leninists and independent Wyatt Scott. Many people will have received voting cards in the mail directing them to their designated polling place. The cards aren’t required however, and voters can register at a polling place, either with a driv-
er’s licence or other government-issued card with a name, photo and address, or with two pieces of identification, one of which must show an address. Poll stations will be open between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. For more information, or to find your designated polling place, visit elections.ca. Voters had four days to cast early ballots. According to information released Wednesday, advance voting was up across Canada. A total of 9,007 people cast ballots in Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon. In the 2011 election, 6,247 voters cast early ballots int the Pitt-Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission riding. Read more about the local candidates and their views at missioncityrecord.com, under the 2015 Federal Election tab. On election night, watch missioncityrecord.com and The Record’s Facebook page for local polling results and live coverage.
Students at École Christine Morrison elementary school Wednesday line up to vote Wednesday.

Local students cast their ballots As Election Day approaches and politicians across the country try to woo voters, students at six Mission schools hit the polls themselves this week. Albert McMahon, Edwin S. Richard, Christine Morrison and West Heights elementary schools, along with older students at Fraserview Learning Centre and Mission secondary deposited mock ballots in student votes
meant to mimic the real election under way. At École Christine Morrison elementary, 157 students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 cast ballots according to teacher Vivian Searwar. The election demonstrated many of the principles and rights that students had learned about, Searwar said. “They learn about their rights as Canadian citizens and they
learn about their responsibilities,” she said. Just like their parents who may have voted early, the students will have to wait until Monday to see who got the bulk of the votes. The results of student voting across the country and at specific schools will be released in sync with the general election results. The results will also be searchable online at studentvote.ca

process. She said she was told the Stave Falls area was lumped in with other rural locations, and that the Hatzic voting site was decided upon 18 months ago and couldn’t be changed. Jordan was also told she was not allowed to transfer to a more convenient location. “To me it seems quite ridiculous to be travelling 40 minutes away rather than driving 10 minutes down the road,” she said. Jordan considered just showing up at a closer polling station with just her ID but not her voter card, which is not required to vote. Instead though, she cast an early ballot last week in downtown Mission, rather than in Hatzic. “I thought, this is dumb. There is no reason,” she said. “It encourages people not to vote.” There may have been some attempts to resolve the issue. Dewdney Trunk Road resident Bob Dickson told The Record he had received two cards in the mail: one directing him to Hatzic, the other to Silverdale. He ended up voting downtown ahead of time. “Lots of people are ticked off with it,” he said. “Lots of people are not going to vote.” A Wednesday search of the Elections Canada web-
site, elections.ca, shows Powell Street residents are now being directed to Silverdale. Elections Canada spokesperson Dorothy Sitek said she could not comment on the specifics of the Mission polling station as she did not have that information. She said The Record could attempt to contact returning officer Kathi Maria Kopan. But repeated efforts to do so failed. An employee said officials would send The Record an email regarding the matter, but no email was received by press time. Sitek said people had many options to vote, pointing to the ability to cast mail-in ballots, or to vote early at Elections Canada offices. “It is important that polling stations be located at a reasonable distance for electors,” she said. But when asked to define a reasonable distance, she said that was up to local officials. Rural Mission residents aren’t the only voters voicing concerns about the organization of this election. In Winnipeg and Invermere, B.C., voters received two separate cards telling them to attend different polling stations. And in Ontario, one person reported being told to vote at a station 30 minutes away, rather than one across the road. - with files from Kevin Mills

Some mayors in the Fraser Valley are hoping to pull more farmland out of the Agricultural Land Reserve to serve as industrial sites that can provide more local jobs. Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun, speaking to a business forum hosted by the Urban Development Institute, said his city expects a decision soon on the removal from the ALR of about 300 acres in west Abbotsford for a new business park adjacent to Langley’s Gloucester Industrial Estates. “That will mean an additional 4,500 employment jobs, Braun told the audience of realtors and developers last Thursday in Langley. Pencil in technology It is 2015, and still we are doing things the hard way. We’re still voting with pencils and little slips of perforated paper. Across the Lower Mainland last weekend – and the rest of the country, too – voters at advance polls lined up in droves, waiting not-so-patiently in lines that exceeded one hour, sometimes two. This, of course, can be a good thing. Voter turnout is almost always lower than it should be, and any sign of it on the uptick should be applauded. The idea of online voting has been bandied about for years, and has especially gained steam among younger voters, many of whom are more comfortable casting a digital ballot from their

smartphones or computers than they are standing in lines at the gym of their local high school. There are those, of course, who worry – perhaps rightfully – about computer hacking and other technological glitches compromising the accuracy and legitimacy of something as important as an election. But every day, millions of Canadians bank and run businesses online, buy and sell goods, and send all manner of sensitive information over the internet. If that can be done securely, voting can be, too, one assumes. For better or worse, we are an increasingly impatient society, and anything that can improve the voting process should be considered.

The District of Mission received five blooms – bronze – and a special mention for the Communities in Bloom School Program during the 2015 National Symposium and awards ceremonies in Kamloops. Mission participated in the 20,001 to 50,000 category along with Dieppe, New Brunswick, and West Kelowna and Westbank First Nation, B.C. Volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector (including volunteer efforts) in regards to the following criteria: tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscape and floral displays. Following their evaluation, volunteer judges Peter Crawshaw and Lucie GagnĂŠ wrote: “The Mission CIB Society School program has been in operation for six years and is now poised to expand beyond the immediate region. At present, there are 15 schools involved in such projects as school gardens, litter pickup and composting. The mayor annually awards a recognition plaque to one elementary school and one secondary school. The success of this program is testament to the dedication of the Mission CIB Societies’ commitment to the community and the desire to introduce and encourage environmental awareness into the population from an early age.â€? Mission Roadrunners fall 24-21 to Abbotsford Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News
The Mission Roadrunners football squad – despite a three-touchdown performance by Joeda Cannon – fell 24-21 to the Abbotsford Panthers in its opening game of the AA high school football season on Saturday. Mission got off to a slow start, falling behind 17-0 in the opening quarter, but the local boys battled back to make it 17-14 at the half. Poor weather conditions, wind and rain slowed down play in the second half as the defences took the spotlight. The teams battled for field position for most of the second half, with each only scoring one major. Cannon, who regularly plays running back, was thrust into the quarterback posi-

Permit needed for fireworks With Halloween approaching, the District of Mission reminds everyone that selling or using fireworks in the municipality is illegal. In Mission, only those who have received a permit at the municipal hall are permitted to use fireworks. Permits are only issued to someone holding a current “fireworks supervisor” certificate, issued by the Federal Energies, Mines and Resources department. “Many people regard the use of fireworks as a harmless bit of fun, and used in the correct way they can be an exciting and colourful display,” the District said in a press release. “As with most things, the problems occur when they are not used correctly; this can result in serious injury. Setting off fireworks in your neighbourhood can create problems when the houses are close together and children are out trick or treating.” Fireworks can also result in property damage or injury to a person, and the chemicals used to manufacture some pyrotechnics can burn at several thousand degrees. Those same chemicals make it impossible to douse the fireworks with water – they have to burn themselves out. The district urges everyone to play it safe, and to only use fireworks under the supervision of someone who has received a permit and is properly trained in the use of these highly explosive devices. Anyone convicted of using fireworks without a permit may be subject to a fine of up to $1,000.

Your Mission/Matsqui/Fraser Canyon Green Party Candidate WHY I’M RUNNING: I’ve committed myself to run in Federal Politics, because of the ill-conceived economic policy in regards to massive mineral and energy extraction and the degradation of the environment, by the current Federal Government. Myself, having always been a firm believer that good environmental policy is good economic policy, I find this system of stewardship deplorable. I believe that an economic policy determined by the consumption of fossil fuels, is nothing less than mad! That this profit driven insanity, shouts, “Houston, we have a problem”.

Mission-based Sumas Regional Consortium for High Tech is set to host the inaugural Agri-Tech Trade Show and Mixer on Oct. 21 at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre in Abbotsford. This event is free and gives local agri-tech businesses and AVAP ventures a chance to showcase the newest tech innovations in the agri-tech industry. This event starts at 2 p.m. and runs until 5 p.m. and gives visitors a chance to walk the expo, attend keynote speaker presentations on this year’s biggest topics in agriculture and mingle with attendees. To register for the free event, visit srctec.org/ agritechtradeshow/. Welton Towers Mission & District Sr. Citizens Housing Association
Board Recruitment Notice Welton Towers is operated by Mission and District Senior Citizens Housing Association (MDSCH) and provides affordable and accessible housing for the independent senior. MDSCH is a member of the Mission Association for Seniors Housing (MASH), sharing a goal to retain and attract seniors within the Mission community and support them as their needs change. The MDSCH non-profit Association is looking for board members who would enjoy sharing their expertise and ideas to actively have a positive impact on the community. MDSCH is proud to have funded many facility and operations improvements and has exciting plans for the future. The many upgrades over the last few years include, interior painting, flooring and energy upgrading. We are also planning to upgrade electric and plumbing services to meet current building standards and ensure our tenants are comfortable for years to come. Fostering good tenant relationships is very important in the successful operation of Welton Towers. The Association has sponsored many events for the tenants, including barbecues, Christmas dinners and trips to local attractions. Tenants are very pleased to see the Association working hard on their behalf, which may be why there is full occupancy at Welton Towers. KITCHEN Leslie Leslie (Les) Kitchen, passed away peacefully on October 9th, 2015 at age of 102. Born in Avonlea, SK. Les was one of a 11 member family. At the age of 17 Les rode off on his horse seeking employment and adventure. Les’ desire for adventure stayed with him all his life. When he returned to Avonlea he met and married the school teacher, the love of his life Alice Johnson. Les became a UGG grain buyer at Gouldtown and Lampman, SK, where their eldest daughter Arlene was born in 1939 . Les and Alice then purchased a general store in Tessier, SK and in 1946 the general store in Broderick, SK where their 2nd child Ken was born. In 1955 their youngest daughter Debra was born. After a fire destroyed the store in 1956 Les went back to grain buying with the Wheat Pool at Dunblane, Broderick and Tullis, SK, retiring in 1977. Les and Alice lived in Outlook, SK until her passing in 2000. Les’ final adventure was a move to Abbotsford BC. Les was predeceased by his wife Alice, his mom and dad and his eight siblings. HUTCHINSON Helen Ella Esther (nee Erdman) August 29, 1940 to September 20, 2015 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Helen Hutchinson at the age of 75. While she was battling many health issues over her lifetime, she did so with tenacity, perseverance, and strength of character. She taught us the values of hard work, dedication, and loyalty. She was born in Marcelin, Saskatchewan in 1940 to parents Alma and Alfred Erdman. She came to BC as a teenager to make a life for herself, eventually moving to Vancouver. There she met Cam, married in 1961 and started her family. Moving to Abbotsford in 1969 to their dream house, Helen and Cam became well known in the small community of Clearbrook. The family moved to England for nearly 3 years in the late 1970s and Helen set up a home for the family there as Cam was often at sea. In her later years she was comforted by her puppies: Missy then later by Sissy and Muffy. Her caretaking role of Cam for 13 years, due of the ill effects of MS, was remarkable and devoted. However, she always found time to make calls to her sons and daughter-in-law, her brother Lorne and friend Joan. Helen was predeceased by her husband of 51 years (Cameron) and her parents. She is survived by her sons Brad (Grace) and Len (Crystal), as well as her grandchildren Crissy (Matt), Alyssa, Mike, Damien, Andrew, Jeremy, and great granddaughters Roxana and Camila. Her talkative nature, steadfast loyalty, and support to family will be missed. No service by request. Donations in her memory to the Little Paws Rescue Society appreciated. Psalm 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
The successful candidate must be detail oriented, have advanced MS Office & computer skills and have an excellent command of the English language. Tasks will include editing and maintaining quote templates and sales contracts, proof-reading documents, administration of P.O.’s and supplier contracts, filing and e-filing, data entry, and maintaining project binders and manuals.
