Council gets flume update Project slightly behind schedule, slightly over budget C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Kimberley City Council received an update on the flume project phase 2 this week. Completion of the project is now scheduled for mid-December, although the contractor Copcan has confirmed that time could be shortened by good weather and bringing in some additional crews. The project is also going to come in over budget some $60,000 or about 1.5 per cent of total cost. See FLUME, page 4

Advanced voter turnout high in riding
444 votes cast in Kimberley on Thanksgiving Monday ARNE PETRYSHEN
Over the long weekend voters across the country cast their ballots in advanced voting ahead of the federal election day Oct. 19. Election Canada officials have been surprised by the high turnout for advance polling, and that is no different in our riding.
Rob Switzer, Returning Officer for the Kootenay-Columbia riding, said the turnout for the advanced voting has been quite high. “I don’t have an exact number,” Switzer said, as the boundaries in the riding were redistributed prior to this election. Switzer previously worked in the British Columbia Southern Interior riding, but was moved into this riding when the boundaries changed to bring in Nelson. “My experience there told me that advanced polls shouldn’t’ be

this busy,” Switzer said. “It was incredibly busy.” For instance the poll in Kimberley on Thanksgiving Monday took 444 ballots. “To me it’s just kind of staggering,” he said. He said his election poll staff, at least those in the bigger communities like Cranbrook, Kimberley, Golden, Revelstoke, Nelson and Creston, were taking large numbers of ballots. “Some more than others, but all were taking lots,” he said. He said three out of the four
polls in Cranbrook exceeded 1,100 voters over the course of the four days of advanced voting. “He said while advanced polling is always a busy time for the polling offices, this was the first time he has had to send out extra ballots to contend with the higher voter turnouts. “In this case I sent out ballots based on my best guess of how much they were going to go over, thinking that voting would slow down on the last day, not tick up.
Do you have any Coats for Kids? C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Each year a national initiative called Coats for Kids collects warm winter wear for kids who can’t afford new coats of their own. Here in Kimberley, coats are collected by realtors at Royal LePage East Kootenay Realty and sent to the Food Bank for distribution to needy children. This year the program is getting off to a bit of a slow start says realtor Marilyn Jolie. “Toys and Togs have been amazing, as they always are,” Jolie said. “But we are not getting many from the public.” If you have any children’s winter wear in reasonable wear, please drop it at East Kootenay Realty in Kimberley. Jolie will See POLLS, Page 4 take care of getting it to the Food Bank.

Whenever You’re Near One, You Hear a Symphony JANUS:
Then & Now
Jim Cameron
T
he Symphony of the Kootenays celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, a remarkable achievement for any group in any town in any genre of music. That there have been rough spots and hard times for the symphony goes without saying. That the countless musicians, volunteers, subscribers and financial backers have managed to surmount the obstacles and keep the music playing for four decades is nothing short of a minor miracle — but they have and this year the orchestra will once again grace the Cranbrook stage, instruments glimmering, reeds glistening, music lights aglow. The Symphony of the Kootenays was by no means the first orchestra in Cranbrook, depending, of course, as to how one defines the word. An orchestra is nowadays generally considered to be a col-
lection of instruments containing representation from the brass, woodwind, string, and percussion families. Accordingly, a ship’s bell, a Basque hornpipe, a diddley bow and a tin pan would fit the bill, and probably have, considering the many groups that have appeared under the banner of “orchestra” over the years. It is generally conceded that an orchestra should not just be varied in terms of instrumentation but should also be large in number and dress in suits and gowns and play classical music and be attended by people who pay attention and remain sitting the entire time and clap in the right places and mostly stay sober and, along with the musicians (who must also pay attention, if nothing else), conduct themselves with an air of gentility and musical comprehension. Well, that’s the general aim, anyway. Not all audiences follow those guidelines of course, nor do all orchestras. Orchestras have produced violence and riots and destruc-

of course, who take great pride in beating the bejeepers out of every inanimate object they encounter (and here it must be noted that, in 1904, local merchant G.T. Rogers advertised a six pound drum container of laundry starch complete with a pair of drum sticks “for the boy” which certainly didn’t help things). The Symphony of the Kootenays — known as the East Kootenay Chamber Orchestra for its first two decades — has provided a vast variety of music over the years, covering all eras of classical music and featuring a multitude of talented performers. Yet, though we celebrate the achievements of the present-day orchestra, it is perhaps best to place things in context and to consider the history of the orchestra in the city of Cranbrook over the last 117 years. One of, if not the first, mention of a Cranbrook orchestra appeared in the Herald newspaper on August 25, 1904, and read: “John Wright, orchestra manager. Music furnished for balls, parties, etc. Two to seven pieces.”
The following week the same ad appeared under the heading of “Wright and Millward’s Orchestra.” Not necessarily an expansion of the band, as it still boasted two to seven pieces. It was apparently an expansion of the management team prepared to take a cut in return for supplying musicians with work. The word “agent” comes to mind. On September 22, an editorial in the same paper stated: “Cranbrook can now boast of the best orchestras in the interior of B.C. Their music is like a dream and those fortunate enough to have heard them are delighted. The town has long bemoaned the fact that it had no orchestra and now it has one of the best. It costs money and untold labor to keep an orchestra in shape, so the people should always have a word of encouragement at home and abroad.” Fine words, indeed. Putting their music where their mouth was, the Wright and Millward Orchestra’s first public performance took the form of a dance on the evening of October 8, 1904, in the hall of the Wentworth Hotel.
“The music will be the best and everything will be conducted in a manner to give all a pleasant evening,” stated the Herald. How many played in the orchestra? How many showed up to listen? It is unknown. It does appear to have been the first and last performance of Cranbrook’s first orchestra. Alas, the dream was over. Well, the first dream, anyway. In fact, for Joseph Millward, sign writer, age approximately 49, life was over the following March when he died in Nelson of a brain tumour. Of Wright, little else is known. A rather disheartening finale for the progenitors of Cranbrook’s first formal musical ensemble but, when you get right down to it, it was really just a dance band anyway. As far as real orchestras go — bypassing McHenry’s Orchestra of 1907, consisting of piano and drums, and Professor Salmon’s Orchestra of 1908, consisting of coronet (trumpet), violin and drums, both of which were obviously much too abbreviated for our purposes — the first actual, reasonably large, brass, woodwinds, strings and percussion Cranbrook Orchestra was formed in 1911 to accompany local actors in the musical “The Geisha” performed for two nights at the old Cranbrook Auditorium which, it should be noted, was also Cranbrook’s first major amateur musical production. It was these intrepid musicians who initially, if only temporarily, set the stage now held by the present day Symphony of the Kootenays. Next week: You Hear a Symphony, Part II. Kimberley Fire Department open house By Robin Knight
It is Fire Prevention Week, and the Fire department has been visiting the schools to teach everyone about fire safety and prevention. Thursday they held the annual Fire Station Open House, to give demonstrations, hands on activities, and answer questions from the public. The Open House is quite popular with kids and adults alike, and, as always, drew quite a large crowd. Held from 5:30-7:30, they offered a barbecue to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy
Canada. The crowds enjoyed the barbecued hotdogs, chips, and, of course, the ice cream, as they looked around and watched the demonstrations. With the theme of “Hear the Beep Where you Sleep. Every Bedroom needs a Working Smoke Alarm!”, the fire department is encouraging all families to install smoke alarms in every bedroom. It is also a great time to change the batteries in all the smoke alarms and ensure everyone knows the best escape routes out of every bedroom. Activities included
watching the firefighters extract a dummy from a car, while demolishing the car around the dummy, allowing kids to spray the fire hose to put out a “fire” in a little wooden house, visits with Sparky the dog, rides on the ambulance bed, helping lift and lower people, using pulleys and levers, and, of course, seeing the fire trucks and the fire station. A huge thank you to the fire station for putting gone this event, and we hope you know just how appreciated you are in our community!!
The firefighters demonstrated all aspects of their skills and training.
Vehicle rescue techniques on display, above and below.
It wouldn’t be an open house without hotdogs. Kids lineup to meet the mascot Sparky.

Visitors were able to take part in the action.

Big Flume should be complete mid-December numbers at advance polls in Kimberley
From page 1 “Everybody sees the progress, so questions about what we are doing have subsided,” said Mayor Don McCormick, who says he regularly joins onlookers on the Wallinger Avenue Bridge to take part in Kimberley’s newest spectator sport — flume watching. “Everyone is ecstatic at the amazing change in our downtown. But questions have shifted to dollars. The budget is $3.74 million and we are projecting to be over by $60,000. I think that’s well within tolerances for a project this big. “But you can’t rest on that. Things could still go sideways so we are keeping a very close eye on it.” McCormick says the upper level of phase 2, above the Wallinger bridge, will be wrapped up in two weeks. The lower portion is behind by four to five weeks. Much of that delay was caused by waiting for engineering deci-

the delay. The work to be done is not dependent on a schedule.” All in all, McCormick says he is satisfied with the project thus far. “I am really encouraged by the positive comments I am
hearing and the general enthusiasm people are showing. It will cost a bit more but it will be such an asset to Kimberley.” A final report and accounting to the community will be coming at the end of
the project, he says. “I fully intend to do that and I won’t pull any punches. But it will be in context of an amazing project that will benefit the community for generations.”

Switzer said the main thing people should know for Monday is where to vote. If they have received a voter information card that information will be listed on the card. If they haven’t received a voter information card, they can call any of the three Elections offices in this riding to find out where they should go. The numbers for the offices are: Cranbrook 1-866754-5448; Nelson 1-866-545-0621; and Golden 1-866-271-5377. Switzer noted photo ID is not a requirement to vote. “They have to present one piece of government issued ID that shows all of the name and address portions, or two pieces of ID — one of which shows the name and address and the other which shows the name,” he said. “It’s important to understand that under federal legislation, the voter registration card is not one of those documents.”

It was so unexpectedly busy that I had to send out extra shipments of ballots, twice to some places.” Switzer said the main change in the Elections Act that affects voting officials’ directives has to do with identification. “There are always issues with people being able to supply proof of address,” he said. “Many people in our society have moved recently. And when you’ve moved recently it’s often difficult to show proof of your current address, so not unexpectedly there were people that were unable to do that and were unable to vote in advance because they were unable to show proof of their address.” Switzer said he was aware of at least one individual at least who was turned away because she was unable to prove her address. She was also unable to take advantage of the attestation provision which would have allowed her to have someone who knows her and lives in the same polling division to attest to her ad-

On Voting and Loving Our Neighbours
I
n our last federal election, only 59% of eligible voters actually bothered to vote. It’s a frightening statistic for me, and causes great concern for the future of democracy. Apparently, it’s part of a worldwide trend for voters to be more and more apathetic about politics. As I ponder this trend, I begin to think about the Great Commandment. Jesus said that the law can be summed up in this: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and love your neighbour as yourself.” People of faith are called to tend to two sets of relationships. Both are important. I’ve always thought that voting was an important thing to do. It is both a civic right and a civic responsibility. It’s also a privilege which we seemingly take for granted. But beyond this, I’m beginning to think about voting in terms of loving our neighbours. First of all, when we vote, we join in common cause with other voters in our country. We take our rightful place in the national dialogue. We educate ourselves and then cast our votes to support those who share the same values as we hold. Voting allows us to make our voices heard about the values we wish our servant leaders to pursue. Secondly, when we vote, we express our gratitude for living in a country where we are free and responsible. To live in such freedom has come with a cost. Voting responsibly honours those who have gone before us, paying the cost of freedom. It’s one way in which we love generations who have passed. Thirdly, voting requires us to become
knowledgeable about the issues. When we educate ourselves, we say that we care. A young woman interviewed by a television reporter after the last election justified not voting this way: “I didn’t bother to learn who the candidates were. You wouldn’t want someone uneducated to vote, would you? I figure I did the rest of you a favour by not voting.” In fact, she has done Canada an immense disservice. She can try to justify it any she wishes, but the fact Rev. Yme way remains that she simply Woensdregt couldn’t be bothered. She didn’t vote because it required too much effort from her. Fourthly, when we vote, we act on behalf of all those who cannot vote. Not everyone in Canada is allowed to vote. Some are disqualified — people under the age of 18; those who are not Canadian citizens; anyone who doesn’t have picture ID can’t vote, which effectively disenfranchises the homeless and others who live in the midst of appalling and shameful poverty. The lack of picture ID also continues to be a huge issue in northern, aboriginal communities. We cast our votes not just for ourselves, but also on behalf of those who share this country with us. When people of faith vote, it is another way in which we obey the half of the Great Commandment which calls us to love our neighbours. As we do so, we also obey the other half, because in loving our neighbours, we are loving the God who is revealed in our neighbours. I’m reminded again of renowned Harvard theologian Wilfred Cantwell Smith. Whenever people would ask him if he was a Christian, he had a ready answer: “Ask my neighbour”.
Smith, a Canadian and an Officer of the Order of Canada, understood in a profound way that our faith is seen in the way we treat our neighbours. Faith is profoundly communal in that respect. Our faith is seen as we live it out in relationship with those around us. It is seen as we take care of what has been entrusted to us. Our faith becomes real not so much in what we do in a church on Sunday mornings, and not so much in which dogmas and doctrines we believe. Our faith is made real in our day– to–day interactions with our neighbours. Fewer than 60% of the eligible voters in Canada cared enough about their neighbours to be bothered to vote last time. In our riding last time, only about 62% or so of eligible voters went out to the polls — just slightly better than the dismal national average. There may be many different reasons for this — voter fatigue, lackluster candidates, a deep–seated mistrust of politicians, a feeling that the outcome was a foregone conclusion. Whatever the reason, my opinion is that people of faith are called to love their neighbours in this way as in many others. Christian faith is not inward– looking. God is at work in us precisely so that we might move outward in love towards our neighbour. We have another opportunity on Monday. Here is a concrete opportunity not just to exercise our civic responsibility. Here is also an opportunity to love our neighbours, to join with them in an act which is a privilege for which people in other lands would be willing to die. It’s an opportunity for us all to make a wise and faithful choice as we cast our ballots. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Opinion/Events Letters to the Editor
Politically impartial
Re: “Ugly Stain” letter in October 15 edition of The Daily Townsman As the President of the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce I am deeply offended by Mr. Warner’s assertion that our organization would engage in partisan politics. To be clear; by design, statute, and practice the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce is politically impartial. We have a very comprehensive Conflict of Interest policy for staff and directors, and I can confidently state that Mr. Gallyamov has not violated the spirt or intent of this policy. I can assure you the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce had no part what so ever in the drafting or distribution of Mr. Gallyamov’s letter. The comments reflect his own personal views, which he is as entitled to express as any other individual. Surely Mr. Warner, a former member of the media, is not questioning an individual’s right to free speech simply because they happen to be a volunteer director of an organization or association! The Chamber encourages all Canadians to be actively engaged in the democratic process. Please vote on October 19, regardless of your personal political affiliation! Dave Struthers President Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce 2015
Tabloid fare
The baseless accusations of ex-journalist Gerry Warner are more suited for tabloid paper considering the record during his tenure on the City Council was as dismal as Mr. Stetski’s. Hand in hand they trotted down the merry path to massive tax hikes and frivolous spending.
The fired Mayor’s blatant disregard for the business community is the reason I wanted to get involved. Mr. Warner’s giddy, baseless attack on me, frivolously linked back to the Chamber, is not surprising considering his ex-journalist status. I stand behind my statements as they are a true reflection of the state of Cranbrook’s affairs when Mr. Warner and Mr. Stetski were voted out of office. I think its past time for Mr. Warner to put down his tabloid pen. Igor Gallyamov Cranbrook
Canal Flats
On Wednesday, David Wilks made a statement defending his record as an MP, and his handling of the Canal Flats mill closure. In his letter, he claimed that I have misrepresented his 4.5 years as MP, that I have attacked him personally, and made unfounded accusations about him. I am happy to restate exactly what I said about his response to the closure of the mill in Canal Flats. I said that when it was announced that Canfor was closing this operation, a serious blow to the village of Canal Flats, and significant loss of employment in the region, the first thing that I would have done as MP would be to pick up the phone and call the Mayor to show my support for the community. Mr. Wilks has yet to contact Mayor Juras to talk to her about the mill closing. He has not indicated to her any action that he has taken to support the community, nor has he expressed sympathy with the community’s plight. In contrast, the first thing I did when I heard that news was to call Mayor Juras, because I believe that Kootenay politicians need to work together and support each other. In his letter, Mr. Wilks claimed that he has handled every request for assistance that his office has received efficiently and
without delay. I say that the voters of Kootenay Columbia will be the judge of that. I stand by my words. And I promise, unreservedly, that I will be the kind of Member of Parliament who picks up the phone, who is present in the community in good times and bad, and who supports political leadership in every community. On October 19th, voters in Kootenay Columbia have a clear choice to make. Do they want 4 more years of Stephen Harper and the Conservatives, or are they ready for change? Wayne Stetski NDP Candidate for Kootenay Columbia
TPP again
Of course Canada is a trading nation and depends on exports to support its economy. Of course Canada must negotiate international trade agreements. Those points were never in dispute, Mr. Abbott. Where you and I seem to differ is whether the agreements should be fair and of overall benefit to the future economy of Canada, and whether our decisions should be based on facts rather than misinformation. I also fully understand the importance of the Elk Valley coal industry, having worked very hard on the plan to ensure our local coal industry can co-exist with clean water, healthy fish populations and thriving aquatic ecosystems. The recently concluded Trans-Pacific Partnership may be a “giant benefit” to Canada as you claim. But neither I nor other Canadians can make an informed assessment without knowing exactly what this latest trade agreement entails. All the more reason for the Conservative government to release the full details of the TPP before we go to the polls on Monday. Do you expect us to buy a pig in a poke? Bill Green Green Party Candidate Kootenay Columbia
Poverty close at hand for many of us
I
work front line in the human service field in Cranbrook, B.C. I work where people are hungry, homeless and suffering. Where people experience devastating mental health and the many consequences of that. I work where people are poor, aging, disadvantaged, sick and with people who have exper ienced some of life’s most horrific occurrences. I work where people, due to one bad situation (e.g. loss of job, sickness in family), are sleeping on a shelter bed. I work where people try hard to make changes in their lives but the barbed environment of poverty in this country can be so powerful, or powerless, that change seems impossible and defeat is common. Our governments go on as hardship grows amongst our own citizens in our communities, our neighborhoods, and our homes. I see it grow. Several of us don’t understand the difficulties many people living in poverty have faced and we tend to judge “them” as though they have had our experiences and opportunities. We judge as though everyone thinks as well as we do. We tell ourselves that because we made it out of poverty they should too or we survived horrific acts and moved on, so should they. We think because we tried drugs but didn’t get addicted or we had sex without a condom and didn’t get sick, neither should have they. It’s not just bad experiences or fate that
leads to poverty. If you work full time at minimum wage in Canada, you live below the average poverty line. This means it is difficult or impossible for you to pay for shelter and associated costs, food, and participate in community (go swimming, to the movies, to a hockey game), or afford any sort of transportation. Working poor... it happens all the time in Canada. In many locations across the country shelter and food is all a person can afford. In many more communities people have no money left after they pay shelter costs none – so they rely on food banks. Impoverished families in our neck of the woods are in rough shape trying to decide between electricity and food. This is the reality for some right here in Cranbrook as it is for others living in big cities, small towns and rural areas across the nation. People live life in distress and feel abandoned by their governments. Families are hungry, seniors are living without medications, mentally ill are drifting and the number of people addicted is on the rise. Much effort and energy has been put into research on poverty by governments at all levels. A lot of tax money has been spent studying poverty in Canada. Reports have been written and promises made. Beautiful books have been bound with titles like “A Poverty Plan for BC (2008)”: or “The Dollars and Sense of Solving Poverty
(2011)”. But along the way promised tax money has been redirected to other concerns more important than our hungry children or our homeless veterans. Social Profit (not-for-profit) organizations have been looking after people impoverished in Canada for as long as it’s been a country. Today, socially conscience groups and individuals, service clubs and organizations as well as families, neighbours, business owners, churches and a few corporations work to fill the gap that governments leave by their policy choices. The donations made by groups and individuals and the time volunteered is the money and effort used to support people living in poverty in our community. Cranbrook is generous, but there is still a very large gap between support and need. Change the way you judge, speak up, vote, share, donate, volunteer. October is designated Poverty Month. You may say that our committee is made up of individuals that represent MCFD, Interior Health, Cranbrook & District Community Foundation, The Salvation Army, Columbia Basin Trust, the City of Cranbrook, Street Angels, Cranbrook Multicultural Society, Community Connections Society of Southeast BC, and others.

Ice look to tame Tigers
Fresh off invigorating victory over Warriors, Kootenay heads to Medicine Hat Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
The Kootenay Ice will look to make it two wins in a row Friday night when they travel to Medicine Hat to face the Tigers. Backed by a shutout performance from goaltender Wyatt Hoflin and fuelled by lone-goal Luke Philp, the Ice (2-70-0) snapped a fivegame losing streak Wednesday night with a 1-0 victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Ice take their game on the road for a Central Division tilt with the Tigers (2-4-1-0) in which they hope to maintain and build upon the momentum from a hard-working Wednesday win. “We worked real hard and that’s good. We need that every night,” Philp
said. “If you’re going to win in this league you have to work. We’ve seen that the last two games now. We can’t be happy with it though. It’s got to be something that is an automatic.” There’s no better time to establish that sort of automatic approach, with the Tigers reeling from a 6-2 home-ice loss to the Regina Pats. In all, the Tigers have dropped three consecutive regulation outings, including a 7-0 thumping at the hands of the Lethbridge Hurricanes back on Oct. 9. In what is shaping up to be a competitive Central Division, particularly at the top, divisional points will always be important and Friday’s contest provides the Ice an opportunity to leapfrog the Tigers from sixth into fifth in the division.
“Med Hat has got a lot of offensive threats,” Philp said. “Really fast forwards who are able to score. We’ve got to be mindful of that and we’ve got to show up with the same mentality. We’ve got to get in and work hard in their building. I think if we start to work early, the rest will take care of itself. It’ll be a good test for us.” One of the Tigers’ key offensive threats won’t be in the lineup Friday, as 20-year-old forward Trevor Cox remains unavailable due to an upper body injury (six to eight weeks). The 5-foot-8 speedster posted 29 goals and 109 points in 69 games last season, and was off to a strong start with four goals and eight points in six games in 2015-16. Even with the absence of Cox, a strong contingent of threats remain, led by right wing Cole Sanford (3G, 7A). “Sticking to the same game plan we had [Wednesday], trying to get pucks deep and make them play as far away from our net as possible,” Hoflin said of keys to success against the Tigers. “If we can do

that, it’s going to take a lot of pressure off our defencemen and give us a win, hopefully.” While Hoflin was strong and steady for the Ice in a 34-save shutout Wednesday, goaltending has been an area of struggle for the Tigers with Nick Schneider (2-3-0, 4.45 GAA, .852 SP) and Evan Johnson (0-1-1, 5.87 GAA, .814 SP) sharing the load thus far. With the WHL’s 20-year-old deadline rolling through Thursday, the Tigers hope to have addressed that situation with the acquisition of overage puck-stopper Austin Lotz from the Everett
Silvertips courtesy the 20-year-old waiver wire. Lotz, a native of St. Andolphe, Man., is a veteran of 164 WHL games (73-61-7-8, 2.95 GAA, .902 SP, 10 shutouts). As of print deadline Thursday, there was no word as to whether or not Lotz will be available for the Tigers Friday night. Puck drop between the Ice and Tigers is set for 7:30 p.m. (MT) at the Canalta Centre in Medicine Hat. Following Friday’s outing in Medicine Hat, the Ice return home to host the Prince Albert Raiders Saturday night (7 p.m.) at Western Financial Place.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You might want to have an important talk in the morning, but news seems to point you in a different direction. Conversations will reveal a lot about the people around you. Encourage others to talk, and do your best to listen. Tonight: Use your imagination. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) One-on-one relating encourages a better response than you thought possible. You see what is happening around you. Perhaps a discussion is in order -- one that will help your creativity flourish. You will see ideas evolve. Tonight: Share with a loved one. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Defer to others, especially if you want them to pitch in and demonstrate their individual skills. There is no question that you know your stuff, but you need to let others share their knowledge, too. Tonight: Say “yes” to a close associate or loved one.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You have a lot of ground to cover. You’ll be determined to get what you need done. Count on some interference in general. There also could be some confusion around a call and its underlying message. Consider yourself lucky if you can achieve your goals. Tonight: Be happy. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You tell it like it is. Your creativity is likely to add some flourishes. Be careful, especially if you’re discussing a serious matter. Someone could misread the situation. A caring gesture will keep the lid on a potentially volatile matter. Tonight: Act like it is Friday night! VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Whether you realize it or not, you have a way of drawing others toward you. You are unusually appealing to many, but you could be stressed out. You simply can’t be in two places at once. Mentally anchor in on the present situation. Tonight: Head home only when you want to. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You could be keeping a person-
Tundra
al matter to yourself. Your smile, however, might reveal that much more is going on with you. Keep conversations moving, as you have a lot to catch up on. If your mind starts to drift off, you might miss an important detail. Tonight: Out with the gang. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You have what it takes to get to the next step. As a result, friends and loved ones will support a cause that is important to you. Still, be aware that you might be spending too much of your time or money in order to make an event occur. Tonight: Make it your treat! SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’ll smile and feel your energy build. With the Moon cheering you on, you will achieve results that perhaps you have only dreamed of. Your choices will define your day, and others are likely to go along with you. Tonight: The only answer is “yes.” CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Take your time, especially if you feel out of sorts. You can push yourself only so hard and expect
good results. If you can, call it an early day or make it a long weekend. You might hear news or sense something that you aren’t comfortable with. Tonight: Play it low-key. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You are a sign of friendship, and today you’ll express that character trait even more than usual. A meeting surrounds you with special people in your life, even though you don’t often have time to express your feelings. Tonight: Where the action is. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Take charge and know what you want to accomplish. Others are likely to seek you out, and as a result, you might have difficulty finishing a project. Don’t hesitate to screen your calls, if need be. Understand what is happening around you. Tonight: A must show. By Hillary B. Price
ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My wife and I are nearly 90 years old. Five months ago, she had a stroke and has since been residing in a nursing home. We both come from small families. Everyone has visited my wife except for our oldest son. I called my older son and asked when he was going to see his mother. His response was a tirade, saying, “Who are you to tell me when to visit?” and “You never listen to whatever I tell you,” along with, “The others live closer and it takes me six hours to drive there.” I told him that I have a lot of things on my mind and cannot listen to his outburst, and then I hung up. There is public transportation from his city to his mother’s location. We’ve never had a conflict prior to this outburst. Until now, he had been visiting three or four times a year. As a result of our age and health, we have not visited his home for the past few years. Our younger son is very supportive in helping us and visits frequently. However, he is reluctant to get involved in an altercation between his brother and us. How do we get our son to realize what he is doing to his parents? -- Frustrated Dear Frustrated: We don’t know if there are some issues between your son and your wife, or whether your son simply cannot deal with his mother being in a nursing home. Either way, you cannot force him to visit, even though, obviously, he should. Instead, phone him and say, gently, “I realize how difficult it is for you to come to the nursing home. Whenever you can make it, I know your mother would love to see you, and so would I.” That’s it. No arguing or pressuring. The rest is up to him. Dear Annie: My boyfriend has been divorced for 33 years. Still, he and his ex-wife find excuses to continue to communicate about their grown sons. Recently, I got excited about getting one son a gift for his 35th birthday. My boyfriend said they “don’t do gifts around here.” So I gave it up. Then I found out that he had gone in on a gift with his ex and another son. Why do you think he had to lie to me about it? Should I take it as a clue and move on? -- On the Outside Looking In Dear Outside: First of all, it is normal for divorced parents to communicate about their grown children until the end of time. It is only a problem if one of the ex-partners has designs on the other or if they are overly involved in one another’s lives. Lying about a gift, however, is worrisome. Your boyfriend may have lied because he thought you’d be angry that he made arrangements with his ex, but that doesn’t excuse his behavior. It only undermines your trust, making you wonder what other things he may be doing with the ex, and whether he wants to exclude you from his family. These are the things you need to talk to him about. If he won’t discuss these issues, or cannot give you satisfactory answers, it’s time for counseling or goodbye -- whichever you think will provide a sense of security for you. LOST!
Wayne Robert Ackerman passed away peacefully on October 1, 2015. Wayne was born to Elizabeth Helen Cumming and Robert Edward Ackerman on December 26, 1938 in Rorketon, MB. In 1946 the family moved to Canoe, BC, where Dad and his two surviving brothers, Rae and Ted, grew up and had many adventures on the small family farm. In 1960, Wayne married his high school sweetheart Margaret Schulz; they were married for 21 years. After getting married, Wayne went on to become a successful Chartered Accountant. His career took him briefly to Kamloops and Williams Lake before settling in Prince George in 1964. He later moved to Vanderhoof, where he retired in 1996. In 1997, for outstanding career achievements as well as outstanding service to the community and the profession, Wayne was awarded the designation of Fellow Chartered Accountant, an honour of which he was extremely proud. Wayne and Marg had two children, Derek (1963) and Paige (1967). Derek and his wife Julie had two children, Troy and Kendra. He had to settle for grandcats from Paige and her husband Kirk who live in North Vancouver, BC. In 2006, Wayne moved to Cranbrook to be closer to family. Over the years, Wayne volunteered countless hours of his time to Kiwanis, Rotary, and Ducks Unlimited. Wayne enjoyed travel, fishing, and watching the geese and other birds on the river, from his front yard in Vanderhoof. He also took it upon himself to adopt, feed, and care for, feral cats that took up residence on his property, naming each and enjoying their aloof companionship. Helping others, human or animal, was always a high priority; all who knew him will miss his gentle kindness, honesty, and generosity. Wayne’s family would like to extend special gratitude to the staff at Joseph Creek Care Village for their exceptional level of care during the past four years. Memorial donations are unnecessary, but may be given in Wayne’s honour to a reputable charity of your choice in lieu of flowers. An informal gathering to celebrate Wayne’s life will be held at Burrard Yacht Club, 10 Gostick Place, North Vancouver, on Friday, November 6th from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Please join us to share your experiences, anecdotes, and any stories of the times you spent with our Dad. If you are unable to attend, please remember our Dad by raising a glass to him, or paying someone a kindness on his behalf. Please feel free to share any cherished thoughts or memories of Dad with us by email to derek.ackerman@ shaw.ca or paige_ackerman@me.com.

Gary Pearson February 22, 1950 to Friday, October 9, 2015
Surrounded by the love of his family, Gary Pearson passed away on Friday, October 9, 2015. During his life, Gary created an atmosphere of love, mindfulness and inclusion of all of his extended family, his friends, and his co-workers at Fortis Gas. Gary had a zest for life which he approached with optimism, joy and adventure. He loved all of us and always had time to share. Gary loved the outdoors, camping, boating, hiking, hunting and fishing. He especially loved “chicken hunting and huckleberry picking” with his dad Ken and his two grandchildren Justin and Isaac. During ball and hockey season you would be sure to see Gary at the ball field and at the arena. If he was not actively doing something he likely was having an interesting conversation with whomever was present. Gary is survived by his wife Lorraine, his daughter Darla (Mike) Sommer and his son Kevin, his grandchildren Justin and Isaac, his parents Ken and Evelyn, his sisters Linda (Lawrence) Arishenkoff and Lorraine (Wayne) London and many other family members. “Everyone Loved Gary” A Celebration of Gary’s life will be held at: Kimberley Conference & Athlete Training Centre, 290 North Star Blvd, Kimberley on Sunday, October 25th from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. Those wishing to remember Gary may do so by making a donation to the Kimberley Minor Hockey Association: Box 73, Kimberley BC V1A 2Y5, “kimberleyminorhockey@hotmail.com”

2. Credibility: The credibility of the newspaper brand
extends to the advertiser. Fifty-nine percent of Web users agree that online advertising is more believable from a trusted Web site. Online, newspaper Web sites are the dominant local media site in most markets.
3. Targeted: If you want to focus on a particular backyard, advertising in an online newspaper is more personal, and more relevant because it is local. Newspapers also publish a plethora of niche sites (youth, women, movie fans, seniors, are illustrative) for virtually any demographic advertisers could possibly hope to reach. 4. Purchasing power: Sixty-two percent of newspaper
Web site users purchase online compared with 49 percent of general users. Thirty-nine percent of online newspaper users have incomes higher than $75,000; 65 percent own their homes. Fifty percent of online newspaper users have spent more than $500 online in the last six months, and 63 percent of online newspaper users prefer to find out about new products through the Internet.
5. Content: After e-mail, the most preferred Web
content is news, sports, financial information, entertainment news, and shopping – in that order. Sixtytwo percent of Internet users visit online newspapers for local news, compared with 39 percent for the local TV station Web site and 23 percent for the local radio station site. Not even Yahoo! or AOL’s Digital City can top this. of retailers report that newspaper sites are efficient in assisting them in meeting marketing needs compared with other sites.

7. High profile: Research.net reports that, among top executives (CEO, CIO, CFO or owner/partner), Internet advertising ranked above over all other media measured for: “Where I prefer to find our about new products, “Where I prefer to receive information about companies, and “Where modern, up-to-date brands advertise. At the same time, these early adopters of technology also skew younger than the traditional newspaper audience. Forty percent of online newspaper users are aged 18-35. 8. Reinforcement: Seventy-six percent of online newspaper users also read the newspaper in the past seven days, and repetition increases awareness. The Internet Advertising Bureau found that, by increasing the number of online banners from one to two per week, branding results on three key metrics increased 42 percent making online a great, inexpensive way to increase the branding lift of traditional campaigns. 9. Quality: Seventy-five percent of advertisers generally said newspaper Web sites’ advertising was as good or better than other Internet sites.
10. Mix: A variety of recent studies have demonstrated the power of online, when included in a mix with traditional media, to elaborate the brand message. Newspaper print and online products combined have the highest penetration and most desirable audience of any other local medium. SOURCE: Newspaper Association of America

PHILADELPHIA - Even as stewards of a historic cruise ship that carried princes and presidents frantically pursue deals to preserve the vessel, they fear rescue efforts will sink without a large infusion of cash by month’s end.
