What now for local infrastructure projects? Abbotsford mayor hopeful federal funding won’t stall Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
Mayor Henry Braun said he is hopeful that a change in government won’t stall federal funding for major local infrastructure projects. Braun, who stayed up late to watch the results come in, congratulated incumbent Conservative candidate Ed Fast and newcomer Liberal Jati Sidhu, who won in the Abbotsford and Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon electoral districts, respectively. He noted that it’s the first time signifi-
cant parts of Abbotsford are divided into two electoral districts. “I look forward to working with both of our MPs,” he told The News Tuesday morning. He said he will reach out to both Fast and Sidhu shortly Braun said he hoped major infrastructure projects in the works in Abbotsford would be able to proceed through the federal pipeline, despite the change in government. The previous Conservative government had committed funding to a Vye Road
overpass, and the city had also identified the widening of Highway 1 as well as Mt. Lehman Road to Abbotsford International Airport as transportation priorities. The Vye Road project has since been expanded, and Fast had expressed hope for increased funding. “I don’t know exactly where they were in the pipeline,” Braun said Tuesday of the projects. “I think we were very, very close.” After taking office in 2006, the federal Conservatives committed millions of

Sidhu focuses on agriculture and infrastructure From A3
cent of ballots. Around 100 Sidhu supporters remained at the Abbotsford Banquet Hall as the votes were counted, and listened as he gave his victory speech. “It’s exhilarating. The fruit ripens when it stays longer on the vine,” he told supporters. He cited agricultural sustainability and infrastructure as two key issues as he prepared to represent his sprawling riding, which also includes much of the Eastern Fraser Valley and the Fraser Canyon. “Being a farmer, I’ll have to look after agricultural sustainability. And infrastructure – that’s another goal I have in mind,” Sidhu said. “I’m pretty sure we’re going to be spending a lot of money on roads and
bridges, I’d love to work with the municipalities and local government to make that happen.” As Sidhu pulled into the lead, Vis had taken the stage in Mission for a tearful concession speech more than an hour earlier. “We are devastated, but life is bigger than the political race and who runs government,” Vis told supporters. NDP candidate Adamson said he was surprised by how the race turned out. The overall results, he told The News, “are not what I wanted. But people have the right to choose.” A small slice of rural Abbotsford – west of Mount Lehman Road south of Highway 1, and west of Bradner Road north of the

Liberal Leon Jensen finished with 36.5 per cent of ballots, while the NDP’s Margot Sangster received 12.8 per cent of votes cast. Turnout was up across the country as a close election saw more than 70 per cent of Canadians cast ballots – the best turnout since 1993. Locally, 71.3 per cent of eligible Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon residents cast ballots and 70.4 per cent of Abbotsford riding electors voted. That Abbotsford turnout was an increase over the 59.7 per cent turnout from 2011. In Langley-Aldergrove, the turnout was 73.5 per cent.

dollars of funding to projects in Abbotsord. That compared to what Conservatives said was a total lack of investment under the previous Liberal government. Braun said he was hopeful that the new Liberal government would follow through on promises to increase infrastructure spending across the country, and that those funds would
find its way to ridings that are represented by opposition MPs. “I think there is no disputing that for many, many years, the infrastructure needs of Abbotsford were overlooked,” he said. “When the Conservative government came back to power, I think they recognized that … I would like to think the Liberal government today would not make
the mistake of predecessors.” Braun said he would take Justin Trudeau “at his word” when he said Conservatives are neighbours, rather than enemies. “I welcome a dialogue with the Liberal government. We need to let the dust settle but then we will again be working with our provincial counterparts and federal counterparts to
ensure they don’t forget these are very vital infrastructure needs to further the economy not only of Abbotsford, but Chilliwack, Langley and the larger region as well.” Fast, for his part, said he couldn’t say how far away the Abbotsford projects are from completion, but that much had been done, particularly on Highway 1 and Vye Road.
CER CERTIFIED
“I would think that, given the work that has already gone into the Vye Road project and also the Highway 1 widening project, and the fact that the Province of British Columbia has made those two projects priorities, I think would reflect a strong argument to carry out those projects and get them finished, but again that is a decision that is no longer in our hands.”

we could be doing with it,” Read said. She cited city’s concerns with numerous fragmented parcels of farmland where people build homes and do nothing related to agriculture, as well as a large medical marijuana plant on agricultural land. “We would like to see more industrial land strategically positioned within Maple Ridge in areas where we just really don’t think there’s going to be a farm use.” Surrey is also a major destination for industrial developers that can no longer find suitable land in Burnaby and Vancouver, the forum heard. Mayors from Maple Ridge to Chilliwack told the forum they want to see transit improved for their residents, and have service better integrated between the TransLink system in Metro Vancouver and cities further east in the Valley.

Some mayors in the Fraser Valley are hoping to pull more farmland out of the Agricultural Land Reserve to serve as industrial sites that can provide more local jobs. Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun, speaking to a business forum hosted by the Urban Development Institute earlier this month, said his city expects a decision soon on the removal from the ALR of about 300 acres in west Abbotsford for a new business park adjacent to Langley’s Gloucester Industrial Estates. “That will mean an additional 4,500 employment jobs,” Braun told the audience of realtors and developers Thursday in Langley. He said the city has seen a surge in demand for industrial development – the city is now weighing applications to build 550,000 square feet of

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Wednesday, October 21, 2015
New approach signalled On Monday, voters across Canada dealt Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party a stinging rebuke and handed Justin Trudeau’s Liberals the mandate to govern with a majority. Even in Abbotsford, long a stronghold for the Conservatives, more half of those who cast ballots did so for other parties. But while the Liberals now control the levers in Ottawa, they should draw several lessons from the election that put them there. With the Conservatives in power, the country was not, despite the cries of some, going down the tubes. The economy has generally been stable, crime continues to fall, and the rights of law-abiding individuals continue to be enshrined in law. The government can claim only partial credit for some of those, but nonetheless, Canada ranks well on an international scale. The fact that the government was de-
feated in such a manner in spite of those strong fundamentals suggests Canadians had grown tired with how the Conservatives went about their business. And the Liberals must heed that cautionary note. They will face plenty of challenges over the next four years, and have already laid out an ambitious agenda. They must keep the economy running, while helping those who need a hand. They have promised to run a deficit in order to increase infrastructure spending, but must keep the debt in check so as not to cripple future generations. And they have to balance the need to protect Canadians with the rights of citizens. But that isn’t enough, voters have said. They must govern in a manner that prizes openness over secrecy, and inclusiveness over division. Trudeau has spoken about such principles. But now it’s time for him to make good on his promises.

What will it take Annastasia Unger (left) plays Imogen and Lauren Trotzuk is Maxine in the musical Ugly.
‘Ugly’ musical tells stepsisters’ story A former student of Abbotsford School of the Integrated Arts has co-written a full-scale musical that is being staged this week in Langley. Annastasia Unger, 22, now a full-time theatre student at University of the Fraser Valley, wrote the production Ugly along with Lauren Trotzuk, 20. The musical tells the story of Cinderella from the point of view of the stepsisters, Imogen and Maxine. They are seen struggling between their mother’s overbearing love and their desire to seek non-traditional lives. The production is being staged by Monumental Theatre, which Unger created in August 2014 to bring Vancouver-quality theatre to the Fraser Valley. Her casts have ranged in age from 14 to 50 years and have come from Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, Langley and Surrey. Ugly runs Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m., with matinees at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 and 25 at D.W. Poppy Secondary, 23752 52 Ave. in Langley. Tickets are available at uglythemusical.bpt.me or by calling 604-832-6477.

Homeless court decision
Supreme Court Justice Christopher Hinkson will issue his decision Wednesday on whether three Abbotsford bylaws, in combination with city policies and actions by staff, infringe on the Charter rights of its homeless population. A six-week trial was held over the summer, during which the plaintiffs
– the B.C./Yukon chapter of the Drug War Survivors – argued that bylaws prohibiting camping in city parks and actions taken by staff infringe on their rights to security of person. Watch abbynews.com for details of the decision, as well as reaction from the city and from Pivot Legal Society, which represented the plaintiffs.

$16,000 for Sally Ann raised by 24 Hours Homeless Nine community leaders see some of the challenges of living without shelter Nobody completed a full case plan, which is exactly what Nate McCready, the Abbotsford Salvation Army community ministries director, expected. He had wanted to show the participants just how difficult it can be to find work, assistance and resources without shelter. The participants walked away with more understanding, which he saw as a success. “We had a really good response from the participants and the clients,” he said. The $16,000 fundraising total for the Salvation Army was collected through individual pledges for each participant. “As a first time initiative, the fundraising was great,” McCready continued. The event was put on as part of Homelessness Action Week, a campaign with the goal of solving homelessness throughout the province. McCready hopes to make it an annual fundraiser and share it with other Salvation Army chapters. This year’s participants were: – Dave Schmirler, Abbotsford Police Deputy Chief; – Mark Warkentin, a board member with the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce; – Marion Keys of the Abbotsford Hospice Society; – Bev Hasenpflug of Quantum Properties; – Tina Stewart of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association; – Kal Sidhu of FirstPage Marketing; – Mike Welte of Farm Credit Canada; – Nicholas Man; and – Karina Urbanoski.

They spent 24 hours living without housing – and raised $16,000 for the Salvation Army in the process. The nine participants in the charity’s 24 Hours Homeless event started their experience last Thursday at 6 p.m., and in just one day they say they learned plenty. They learned homeless people in Abbotsford face complex, systemic issues that aren’t easy to solve. “Everything is interconnected. If you don’t have one piece, everything is stalled,” said Bev Hasenpflug, who works for Quantum Properties. Her ““case plan,” for the day asked MORINEE her to sign up for housing ONLws.com assistance and temporary abbyne work – but with her ID left w behind, she realized both were be near-impossible. “There’s nowhere to go for five or six weeks. You’re stuck.” Participants spent the night staying in a re-purposed activity room at the Salvation Army’s Centre of Hope on Gladys Avenue, separate from the centre’s regular intake. Karina Urbanoski, who signed up through her church, recognized how things would have been different if she had needed a regular shelter bed. “I was buffered. But if I was totally alone, I’d be scared,” she said. “It’s been an emotionally edgy day.” The tension between everyday life and the on-the-margins roles they were asked

Car-sharing company Uber recruiting locally Uber, the controversial car-sharing company that bills itself as a taxi alternative, is looking to recruit drivers in Abbotsford, spurring a warning from Burnaby to the City of Abbotsford. The company has taken out ads on social media targeting locals, saying one could make “up to $640 per week” as a driver working for the service. They have also set up an Abbotsfordspecific recruiting website. The U.S.-based enterprise, which connects passengers with its contracted drivers via a popular smartphone app, doesn’t currently offer service anywhere in B.C., but they do operate in Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax,
Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, London and Quebec City. They say they’re looking for interested drivers in Abbotsford and elsewhere to determine the best expansion locations for the future. The company hasn’t applied for a business licence in Abbotsford, but city council has received a strongly worded letter from Burnaby urging them to reject Uber. “Uber has established a history of non-compliance and has met global resistance for its practice of quietly entering into markets illegally, without regard for local taxi service laws and regulations,” the report from Burnaby’s finance director sent this June reads. Because the
company was not willing to follow Burnaby’s bylaws for taxis, they were deemed ineligible for a business licence there. The company says it regularly flouts taxi laws because they are often outdated and not in line with current technology. Uber argues that strict rules for taxi licensing, which require extensive vetting and commercial insurance, are unnecessary and hurt both drivers and passengers. However, critics take issue with a number of Uber’s practices, like higher “surge pricing” when there is heavy demand for cabs, looser background checks and allowing drivers to use non-commercial insurance.

Four new exhibits open at The Reach
Four new exhibitions open at The Reach Gallery Museum (32388 Veterans Way) on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. with a public reception with the artists. The new exhibits include the work of Toronto-based artist Sarindar Dhaliwal. The Radcliffe Line and Other Geographies refers to the 1947 partition of India, and the exhibition presents Dhaliwal’s most important work from the past 20 years. In this presentation, the artist
reflects on the dissonance of the immigrant experience, rooted in memories and dreams of her childhood experience and perceptions of Eastern and Western customs. Dhaliwal will give a free artist tour and talk on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. Also featured at the new exhibitions is Abbotsford’s Suvi Bains, who explores one of the five Sikh articles of faith – kesh, or Sikh men’s unshorn hair. In Reflections, Fraser Valley
artist Steve Stanczyk explores the colour relationships that can be achieved with an experimental silkscreen process that uses a photograph of light reflections as its compositional starting point. The fourth exhibition, Art on Demand 1.4, is a continuation of the ongoing emerge program at The Reach and presents new works of art from Daniel Hurst and Fiona Moes Pel. Henry J Block (Hank)
news? witness breaking
May 28, 1926 - October 7, 2015
It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the passing of Henry Block on October 7th from complications of Parkinson’s disease. In the days leading up to his final breath, Henry was surrounded by his loving family and friends praising the Lord in song and prayer. He received loving tender care from the staff at Care-at-home which allowed him to spend his final days at home. Henry was born in Borden, Saskatchewan on May 28, 1926, the second son of John and Helen Block. In 1936 the family moved to Yarrow, B.C. in search of a better life. Henry was a born entrepreneur, he loved to “wheel and deal”. He often would say that “he had nothing but nerve”. At the age of 13 he made money selling pigeons and rabbits, at 17 he started his own cartage company, “Victory Messengers”, at 19 Henry was selling real estate and at 23 was managing a car lot for American Motors. In 1955 at the age of 29, Henry and his younger brother Arthur opened the first sales
office for Block Bros. Realty. Over the next 23 years the company became one of the largest and most successful real estate firms in Canada. In the early 80’s Henry’s priorities changed. He began to spend more time sharing his faith and supporting various community projects that helped people in need. He traveled the world with his wife Laura sharing the “Jesus Film” through the support of Campus Crusade for Christ. He also loved to host Christmas dinners for seniors at his farm in Langley and other events that brought joy to his family and community. In 2013 Henry was presented with the Diamond Jubilee Medal in commemoration of the sixtieth anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the Throne in recognition of his contributions to Canada. We will remember Henry for his love of family and friends, his generous spirit and most importantly as a man who loved Jesus. Henry will be greatly missed by his large blended family. His loving and devoted wife Laura, daughter Mary-lynn Kaulius (Eugene), son John Block (Rose), daughters Katherine Van Kampen and Lory Block, Terri Richert (Harold), Linda Knowles (Wayne), Jacqueline Martin (Daniel), his brothers Jack (Lena), Arthur (Lauradel), his sisters Helen Nickel (Jacob deceased) Anne Willms (Walter). Henry was predeceased by his sisters Erna Ens (Alvin) and Elvera Wiebe (Peter deceased) and his grandson Matthew Pudlas. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to one of the following charitable organizations that Henry and Laura have supported over the years. Sources Food Bank in South Surrey or the food bank in your community, Dalit Freedom Network Canada, Union Gospel Mission, Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary Society, Parkinson Society British Columbia, Power to Change (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ Canada), A Rocha. A memorial service will be held at Peace Portal Alliance Church 152nd Street and King George Hwy in Surrey on Saturday, October 24th at 11:00 a.m. Messages can be left on Henry Block’s tribute page, www.victoryfuneralcentre.ca

Another weekend, another split for the Abbotsford Pilots. The Pilots hit the road for a pair of games, and opened the week with a 3-2 loss to the Richmond Sockeyes. Abbotsford fell behind in the first period and couldn’t manage to get control of the game. The Sockeyes scored early in the second period to go up 2-0, but Dryden Michaud made it a onegoal game at 6:06. Richmond scored again to once again go up by two after two periods. Pilots forward Justin Wilde scored in the third period to get Abbotsford within one, but that was as close as the Pilots would get. Abbotsford continued on the road on

Modernizing the typical BC Box home By Nicolle Hodges
From complete renovations to a single room redesign, the first step to achieving the home of your dreams is by working with a trusted renovator. For Ralph Belisle, president of TQ Construction, the project entrusted to him was to transform a typical BC box home into a more modernized style better suited for the 21st century. The homeowners had realized their humble home was dated, considering it had gone untouched since it was built in the sixties. The state of the home before the renovations was like taking a trip back in time. “The floor plan was adequate for [the sixties], but it lacked clear sightlines at both the interior and the exterior, which current lifestyles demand,” explains Belisle. The home was situated to the rear of a very large lot and the homeowners loved to experiment with different foliage in the huge garden area. “We wanted to extend the house in such a way that the interior’s views of the front garden improved and the
interior space became more cohesive among its rooms.” So, the process of transformation began for TQ Construction – a company recognized for its tradition of excellence in BC’s home improvement, renovation and construction industry. Before: They widened the existing “too-tight” garage to include a garage hobby space, which enabled the creation of big living room/family room above. Belisle says the owners particularly loved the vaulted ceilings and the great garden views through the new arch-top windows. Even with a few pricier touches, the renovations stayed within budget. “I look upon the project as one of our successes, which let the inside details was so positive in fact, that be inside and the outside be inde- Belisle says they have since become pendent, even while improving the friends. access and enjoyment between the “The homeowners thought of hirtwo,” Belisle says. “The owner/con- ing us after seeing the way our neightractor team let the house and garden bourhood projects were organised,” interact beautifully, which can easily he says. “During that time we were be seen as one walks up the path to- among the first of local renovators to ward the front door.” adopt job-site recycling, which creThe homeowners’ reaction to these ates a very organised job site.” Now,

Among the popular shades in flooring right now are lighter wood shades and grey. Earth tones are always in style, and can be found in all manner of materials and budgets to suit your style and space. Monarch Flooring photos
Changing up what lies beneath your feet By Nicolle Hodges The newest trends in Áooring are a direct reÁection of those looking to the future, yet wanting to remain comfortable while doing so. Monarch Flooring owner Matt Robinson has noticed that there has been a shift towards more detailed and multi-dimensional Áooring. When people are considering hardwood, there seems to be a move away from maple and walnut shades and more towards wide-plank white oak. Besides offering a unique
look, the inÁux can also be credited to its long lengths and affordable pricing. Wire-brushed Áooring offers a unique take on texture, while multi-level staining provides different colour effects. “It really gives some neat looks and a larger variety as opposed to monotone Áooring,” says Robinson. Peter Pocrnic of Casa Madera Floors has seen something very similar when it comes to hardwood. “We’re seeing people going for the lighter shades of grey,” he says, as well as the lighter earth tones. “The brushed oak is very popular,” he says. “It goes with the
lifestyle. People have kids and dogs, and these products cover scratches really well.” Robinson has noticed that when it comes to laminate, “in a lot of ways it is mirroring what is happening in hardwood,” he says. “The boards are no longer boring, and are beginning to look more detailed with hand-scraped rippled surfaces.” In addition, when it comes to baseboards, Robinson and his team are adding more square trim as opposed to rounded, furthering the overall structured feel. However, in the case of carpeting, the preferred look doesn’t

THE TRUTH ABOUT copper vs. aluminum wiring! follow the edgy trend. Instead, many are opting for a more plush carpeting with the cut-pile carpet, as it’s fairly thick and soft under your feet. Wool and synthetic blends are making an appearance, with an emphasis on grey and neutral tones. Vinyl has also seen a shift towards what is considered “luxury” with plank and tile. While durability is a great selling point, the product’s tile and plank format make for easier installation and repairs over the traditional 12-inch-wide sheets. When it comes to tile in particular, Fontile Kitchen and Bath Sales Specialist Sean Cloete says that with the use of technological advancements in the area of digital imaging, Áoor trends continue to replicate natural stone. “All the great stones from Marmol Carrara to Calacata Gold to tiles that look like real wood, or even combining both wood and stone together is a new trend that has emerged,” says Cloete. “Combining the two is both beautiful and exciting to have.” Porcelanosa Grupo, a leader in ceramics for both Áoor and wall tiles, have been replicating real stone in board lengths (6 by 26 inches and 8 by 48 inches) on porcelain tile with texture for over 14 years. By using Digital Ink Imaging, they are able to replicate stone in a large
format (24 by 48 inches and 18 by 38 inches) that reduces grout lines and creates a natural-looking replica. “Digital imaging allows the tile to be imagined no matter what the texture angle is, which is a step up from Áat tiles,” says Cloete. “Glazes have also matured to the point that glossy is no longer a standard, but now matte, matte sheen, honed and textured matte are all natural glazes to further replicate real stone, and fooling even the most experienced in our industry.” Pocrnic advises homeowners considering replacing their Áooring to set aside at least one to two weeks for the renovation depending on how large the room is, and always involve a professional. “A professional will be able to properly set up the sub-Áoor to ensure the installation is immaculate,” he says. He also notes that you need to look at purchasing quality products and ensuring high-quality workmanship. As the industry continues to cater to the future with metal detailing and digital imaging, there is still a focus on ensuring the interior of a home remains warm. As trends show, now is the time to embrace the best of both worlds, with comfortable and contemporary all under one roof. With Àles from Kerry Vital
If your home was built between 1960 and 1980, there is a good chance you may have aluminum wiring. If your lights flicker occasionally, or your outlets and switch plates are warm to the touch, you definitely have cause for concern.
FACT: Copper wiring conducts electricity better than aluminum.
Obviously, replacing all the aluminum wire with copper wire is the best, worry free solution. But there is another option which the BC Safety Authority recognizes as a safe and acceptable alternative to a complete home wiring replacement.
FACT: Copper wiring expands and contracts less which means it is less likely to cause overheating, loose connections, arcing and melting, ultimately the #1 cause of electrical fires.
We have frequently seen this repair attempted incorrectly, which means the homeowner has received no benefit for the effort or their investment, so having the work done to Code by a trained professional is critical. Our technicians are both skilled and experienced at this cost effective way of addressing your aluminum wiring problems and reducing the risk of fire and electrical problems in your home. Aside from the safety benefit, addressing this problem may even have a positive affect on your home’s resale value and homeowner’s insurance rate. We will provide you with a written quote before any work begins, so there are no unexpected surprises at the end of the job. Your complete satisfaction, all 100% of it, is very important to us.
FACT: Homes with aluminum wiring are 55 times more likely to have a fire hazard condition present.

human trafficking. The session runs each day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at ACS, 2420 Montrose Ave. In 2007, the provincial government launched the Office to Combat Trafficking in Persons (OCTIP), responsible for addressing human trafficking in B.C. Workshop organizers say Abbotsford’s location along the border and its extensive agricultural and trucking industries make exploitation prevalent among youth, seniors and temporary/foreign workers, but it is hard to detect and often goes unreported. Participants at the workshop will learn the definition of trafficking, the forms of exploitation present in Canada and particularly in the Fraser Valley, the indicators of a human trafficking situation, information about the links between gang activity and human trafficking, how to assist a trafficked person, how to mobilize the community, and resources available. A community response will be created using the OCTIP Service Model, and by identifying available service and gaps. This workshop is intended for service providers, community organizations, aboriginal specific organizations, municipal government representatives, law enforcement, schools, B.C. government ministries and other key community members. Registration is available through eventbrite.ca under Human Trafficking: Fra s e r Va l l ey Community Response Workshop.

Carol Marion McCausland October 22, 1933 – October 8, 2015
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carol on October 8, 2015 at the Palliative Care Unit of Nanaimo Hospital in her 81st year. Carol was born October 22, 1933 in Minnedosa, Manitoba. After graduating from Minnedosa Collegiate, Carol earned a Bachelor’s in Interior Design from the University of Manitoba. After marrying Harry Douglas (“Doug”) McCausland on October 7, 1960, Carol moved with him to Guelph, Ontario. There, she helped put Doug through college - since he was training at the Ontario Veterinary College (University of Guelph) - by teaching Home Economics at the MacDonald Institute on the same campus. Carol and Doug moved to Abbotsford, BC in the summer of 1965 and started their family and business soon afterward. They remained in Abbotsford for forty years. Even as Carol carried out the role of homemaker as the children were growing up, she carried out various projects related to interior design in her additional role as partner of Doug’s company, McCausland Consulting. She also earned a Diploma of Fine Arts from Fraser Valley College (now known as University of the Fraser Valley). Soon afterward, she put her considerable artistic talent to good use by producing various works of watercolour art that she generously gave to family members and friends, and showcased at different festivals. Sometime in the early 1970’s, Carol came to faith in Jesus Christ and His crosswork on her behalf. Since that time, Carol’s trust in her Lord and Saviour has shown itself in many ways, including ministering to seniors; giving her time, resources and leadership to schools and organizations; and simply being a faithful friend, mother and wife. She was loved by many for being a lively, spirited, humourous, supportive, and warm-hearted person. Carol is survived by her beloved husband, Doug; daughter, Nan; sons, Andrew, Patrick, and Sean; son-in-law, Hideki Ami; daughters-in-law, Deonne and Shiela McCausland; grandchildren, Stephen, Drew, Meghan, Anna, Jonathan, Aiden, Matthew, Callum, and Bryce; beloved children-in-law, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins; and many valued friends. Donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation Vancouver Island, 2410 Lee Avenue, Victoria, BC V8R 6V5 or to the charity of your choice. To send a condolence to the family please visit www.yatesfuneral.ca YATES FUNERAL SERVICE & CREMATORIUM (250-248-5859) in care of arrangements.
